If you are looking for a quaint getaway then Arlington is not the place but if you are looking for a city with a Texan sized attitude then Arlington can (almost) match Dallas and Fort Worth .

1. Get your thrills at Six Flags Over Texas

This massive amusement park attracts visitors around the country during their time spent in Arlington and in the surrounding state of Texas.

Thrill rides include two themed around Batman and a superman water ride which is guaranteed to leave you soaked.

There are also plenty of rides to cater for the less adventurous visitor to the park. As with all Six Flags parks, there are plenty of places to eat throughout the park as well as live entertainment and shopping.

2. Visit the home of the Dallas Cowboys

Whether or not you like American Football, and whether or not you support the Dallas Cowboys, you should still have a look at the AT&T Stadium during your time in Arlington. The stadium is an incredible feat of architecture.

It is the largest domed structure in the world and has a capacity of over 100,000 fans. Throughout the year the stadium hosts some of the most popular performers from around the world (at the time of writing Beyonce is about to perform live here).

3. Tour Globe Life Field

Although not as much of an architectural masterpiece as the AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Field is more iconic.

From illegal gambling in an underground casino’s secret room, to raids by the FBI, Top O’ Hill Terrace has quite a history. Dubbed ‘Vegas before Vegas,’ this restaurant has seen its fair share of excitement.

Today, Top O’ Hill can be toured as a museum by appointment only. After lunch, you might be in the mood for some shopping therapy.

The Parks Mall is nearby and loaded with all your favorite stores. This indoor mall has over 150 stores and a food court with all of your favorite restaurants. Some of the stores you’ll find at The Parks Mall include H&M, Forever 21, Zara, and Sephora.

The Parks Mall is also home to a movie theater so that you can catch the latest blockbuster after a day of shopping. Located on S. Cooper Street, The Parks Mall is easy to get to and has plenty of free parking.

SEE THE TEXAS RANGERS PLAY BALL

If football is the most popular sport in America, baseball is the most historically significant. The Texas Rangers are Arlington’s very own Major League Baseball team, and they play their home games at Globe Life Park.

Catch a game and enjoy some good old-fashioned baseball fun. You might even see a home run or two! The team was created back in 1972, and they’ve been a part of Arlington’s culture ever since.

The gift shop at Globe Life Park is where you’ll find all the Texas Rangers memorabilia you need. From hats and jerseys to posters and baseball cards, they have everything you need to show your support for the team. The Rangers are famous for their competitive spirit, and they always give it their all. So put on your Rangers gear and come out to support Arlington’s team!

TIERRA VERDE GOLF CLUB

If you’re looking for one of the most beautiful golf courses in Texas, you’ve got to check out Tierra Verde Golf Club .

This golf club is where golfing and nature come together. In fact, it’s the first golf course in Texas to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Opened since 1998, this golf course is beautiful — surrounded by trees and native grasses.

In addition to the course, you’ll also find a learning center, a lighted driving range, a three-hole mastery course, and a putting green complex. Lessons and clinics are also taught here. After a game, make sure to enjoy a meal at the on-site restaurant.

9 Fantastic Things To Do In Arlington, Texas

You may know Arlington, Texas, as the home of the popular amusement park Six Flags Over Texas and to the University of Texas at Arlington. Arlington has also evolved into a valuable place to visit to see your favorite sports team play ball and has boasted quite a few other attractions in the past several years. But what you may not know is that the city is home to thriving art, entertainment, and music scenes, with its historic downtown being at the heart of it all. 

Arlington is about halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth and 15 minutes south of the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. I was hosted at The Sanford House to see how Arlington has grown since treading my feet there years ago, but all opinions here are my very own.

Things To Do In Arlington

From sports venues or the huge shopping scene to a quaint historic downtown that’s recently been updated, there’s no doubt you’ll find something to do that your family will enjoy. 

You’ll always find something fantastic to do in any area of Arlington. The Urban Union district, in particular, is an up-and-coming area that helped put downtown back on the map. With a recent facelift, this area now offers fun, food, and a fabulous time with family and friends, all in a walkable area. I had a nice time touring the area and finding fun places to eat to share here.

1. Catalyst Creative Arts

On the corner of art and creativity in downtown Arlington is Catalyst Creative Arts — an art studio and event venue where art is for everyone! They offer birthday parties, girls’ nights out, lessons, and more. If you have something to celebrate, they will help you succeed with any art creation you want. And if you’re lucky, you may get to love on Cookie, the studio’s four-legged family member!

2. Stay And Spa At The Sanford House

One of Arlington’s premium boutique hotels, The Sanford House is located in historic downtown surrounded by gorgeous greenery, a beautifully manicured lawn, and a large courtyard that’s perfect for parties and weddings. You can choose between house rooms, cozy cottages, or villa suites next to the courtyard. It’s a perfect setting for romantic stays and girl trips, and it’s a female traveler’s best getaway – always safe, always beautiful. While you’re there, make a reservation for a self-care treatment at the spa. With each overnight stay, a hot breakfast is served in the Manor House dining room. I was hosted in a cottage for an overnight stay and loved their gated community.

3. Book A Charcuterie Board Pairing Event

Have you ever wanted to know how those wonderful charcuterie boards are put together? There is a right and wrong way to make one of these, and at Inspirations Catering & Events , that’s exactly what you can learn to do. Reservations are required for 2 to 18 people, and it’s located downtown.

4. Arlington Music Hall

From the first day of opening its doors in 1950, the Arlington Music Hall has been the go-to place for live entertainment. It’s still going strong in the heart of downtown and has a few of its original pieces still attached, including the marquee sign. The Music Hall is the perfect place to experience all types of music, comedy, and theater. Bring the whole family for a great time.

5. Texas Live!

Texas Live! is one of Arlington’s newest entertainment venues that combines entertainment, restaurants, and accommodations into one exciting destination. Next to the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Park and AT&T Stadium is where you’ll find this spectacular event venue. It’s the perfect destination for sports fans, and a family destination as well. There are live outdoor events almost every night of the week, and if you’re hungry or thirsty, there’s plenty of restaurants and bars to explore. Texas Live! is also adjacent to Live! by Loews luxury hotel, the perfect setting for all the above. Put on your dancing shoes and come out to listen to country, rock, indie, pop, and electronic dance music … a little bit of everything for its diverse crowd.

6. Take A Tour Of AT&T Stadium

I’m sure you know, but in case you don’t, AT&T Stadium is home to the Dallas Cowboys. But did you know you and your family can take several different types of tours there? Some tours will appeal to all interests and ages and are available daily. Experience the field and throw the ball, marvel over the art displayed throughout the stadium, or opt for a self-guided tour. There’s something for everyone, for a price. Be a kid for the day and have fun!

7. Take A Hike At River Legacy Park

Inside River Legacy Park is eight miles of paved hike and bike trails, a 10-mile mountain bike trail, picnic areas, a pavilion you can reserve, gorgeous river overlooks, restrooms, playgrounds, and more. A canoe and kayak launch is also available — plan for a full day at this park.

8. Rent A Pontoon Boat On Lake Arlington

When I was growing up, my family had a deck boat similar to a pontoon boat that we took out on the water almost every weekend at our lake house. This, by far, was one adventure this girl couldn’t wait for. I loved sitting at the front of the boat, sometimes dangling my legs off the side and letting the wind blow my hair as I watched birds fly over and skiers jump over the wake. I caught myself daydreaming a lot. So if you’re in Arlington for a long period of time, rent a pontoon boat and let the wind blow your hair! Check out what all there is to do at Lake Arlington .

9. Enjoy Nature At Crystal Canyon Natural Area

Enjoy a walk along a half-mile gravel path inside this 40-acre area in its natural state. Crystal Canyon Natural Area is one of North Arlington’s hidden gems in nature. If you’re into geology at all, this area is for you. Fossilized clams, gypsum layers, and fine grain sandstone have been found here. Immerse yourself in nature while reading educational signs along the way. Benches are along the path in case you need to sit a spell.

Pro Tip: It’s a hilly path — wear good hiking shoes.

Best Restaurants In Arlington

Arlington is a metropolitan area, the second-largest city in the county next to Fort Worth. Restaurants in Arlington, TX, are widely diverse, with every type of cuisine imaginable, including a large mix of international cuisine. In downtown alone, you’ll find many quaint restaurants with wide-open spaces outside on lawns and patios.

Restaurant506 At The Sanford House

For contemporary American cuisine, head to Restaurant506 , located at Arlington’s boutique hotel, The Sanford House. They serve lunch, dinner, weekend brunch, and a hot breakfast to their house guests. You do not have to stay at the hotel to eat at the restaurant. Reservations are recommended but not required. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

The Tipsy Oak

What’s better than eating dinner and listening to live music? Eating on The Tipsy Oak ‘s large outdoor patio, of course! What a cool place to hang out at night! Save room from the day’s eats for house specials of sirloin, blackened salmon, or fried shrimp, or go for their mouthwatering hamburger and fries. It’s a very quaint and laidback place downtown to hang out with friends and family. Order up a big helping of their smoked brisket cheese fries — you’ll be glad you did!

Prince Lebanese Grill

Inside an old converted Sonic is home to Prince Lebanese Grill . Family is the center of it all. I love their story — it’s a must-read and can be found on their website. Prince Lebanese Grill is also a favorite place to eat among the locals, says Jaime, owner of Catalyst Creative Arts — he says he goes there at least twice a month just for the rice. If that doesn’t get you excited, Guy Fieri featured their famous rice recipe on Guy’s Big Bite and on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives .

Legal Draft Beer Co.

A taproom with a huge outdoor covered patio serving up world-class full of flavor beer. Legal Draft Beer Co. is located in the Urban Union district of downtown Arlington. You must check out their locally brewed beer selection. I’m sure you’ll find a favorite, and if you can’t hang around, they sell beer to-go as well. Once a month, they hold an Urban Open-Air Market with fresh local vendors that come out and sell their wares.

Vila Brazil Steakhouse

When dinner rolls around, out comes a not-to-miss-steakhouse. Vila Brazil is one of Arlington’s premier dining experiences, and they aim to please. And they know a thing or two about pairing your favorite wine with your dinner of choice. Reservations are open, and dinner starts at 5 p.m.

The Social House

An indoor-outdoor bar-type restaurant with wide opened doors that serves local cuisine made right in their scratch kitchen. The Social House is set up with the bar in the middle and TVs all around. Watch your favorite team play here, and socialize with your friends on any given day — open every day of the week.

Everyone loves pizza! When you try Cane Rosso , you may not want to eat it anywhere else! Your dining experience can be indoor or out on their large yard with picnic tables. It’s a great place for the kiddos to run around. You’ll love knowing they use the highest quality ingredients, and they make their own dough and mozzarella. The perfect pair — Texas Rangers and pizza! Just look for the red pig out front.

Locals love downtown Arlington, especially now that it’s been revamped and excellent family-friendly restaurants have come to the area. They love sitting outside on the patio of these restaurants.

This popular Arlington watering hole is a great place for getting a taste of Arlington’s vibrant social scene – not to mention some of the 500 global beers served here, including plenty of craft drafts. What’s more, the venue also serves tasty and affordable pub grub which can be enjoyed inside on one of the patio tables outdoors on a sunny day. If the weather’s not being kind, there’s no hardship in kicking back indoors, sinking into one of the comfy sofas and watching one of the numerous TVs dotted around the pub with a drink in tow. But be aware, weekends get seriously busy.

3. Eskimo Hut

Eskimo Hut is a unique walk up store where patrons choose from thousands of different hand crafted daiquiris and margaritas to go. They package their drinks so patrons can take them away to your party, tailgate or simply chill on the couch with your besties. They have a choice of three sizes and gallon bags; 15 flavors of jello shots, and their very own rum-soaked gummy bears. Kick up your drink with an extra shot of rum, tequila, vodka or whiskey. Meanwhile for the beer lover, they offer several bottles, cans and cups of craft beer and draft to go too.

4. Top O’ The Hill Terrace

Before you even enter the grounds of Arlington Baptist College, it’s hard to miss the beautiful sandstone gatehouse and the Texas historical marker beside it. It’s perhaps your first clue that this wasn’t always a place of worship. In fact, more than 85 years ago, it was the Top O’ Hill Terrace, a private residence that hid one of the most exclusive underground casinos in the country – not to mention a brothel. The building was almost completely overhauled in the 1970’s, but a few years ago maintenance workers stumbled upon a secret room. Experts believe there are several other hidden rooms and tunnels within the property, but excavating them is an expensive proposition. For now, visitors must satisfy themselves with the single room unearthed so far, along with the genteel restaurant and tea garden that once concealed the more disreputable activities taking place below.

5. Decorators Warehouse

If you’re sentimental about Christmas, and can’t wait until the next one comes around to get your annual fix, then the Decorator’s Warehouse will be just the ticket. This vast emporium is one of the largest Christmas stores anywhere in the world, featuring more than one acre of beautiful festive décor and incredible displays. There’s candy canes, gingerbread houses, lights, garland, ornaments, ribbons and wreaths – but perhaps the stand-out exhibit is the 150 pre-lit lifelike Christmas trees that stand up to 14 feet tall. And if you’re not a fan of shopping (or Christmas), there’s a lounge with a 50-inch plasma TV where you can kick back and wait for your companions to finish. But you might be waiting a while…

6. Six Flags Over Texas Oil Derrick

The world’s tallest land based oil derrick can be found in Arlington, offering a unique vantage point from which to cast your eye over the city and its surroundings. Nestled within the grounds of the famous Six Flags theme park, the 300-foot tall, steel observation tower opened in 1969 and has been captivating visitors ever since. The beautiful steel structure is impressive enough to view from afar, but the real highlight comes from taking the 1 minute 30 open-walled elevator ride up to the top where you’ll be greeted by stunning views of the park, Arlington itself, and the Dallas and Fort Worth skylines in the distance.

7. Triple T Stables

Where better to learn how to ride a horse than in the cowboy state of Texas? This popular and highly regarded self-care boarding facility offers traditional Western style riding lessons for ages 6 and upwards, with private lessons priced at $40 per hour (part-private lessons cost $35). The venue is also famous for hosting rip-roaring barnyard and pony parties and other special events. A word of warning: bring your own helmets as they aren’t provided.

8. The Upstairs Gallery

For a one-of-a-kind art experience in Arlington, take a trip to The Upstairs Gallery, which has been captivating arts lovers since its foundation in 1967. The historic gallery space features a wide variety of works including watercolours, oils, pottery, jewellery and mixed media creations, with a strong focus on giving local artists an opportunity to display their talents, as well as those from further afield too. Having just celebrated its 50th anniversary, this is a great time to visit one of the region’s most exceptional – and original – arts venue.

9. Historic Fielder House and Museum

Dating back to 1914, this charming two-storied prairie-style home is one of Arlington’s unique cultural institutions. Within its beautifully-maintained confines lives the permanent collections of the Arlington Historic Society, offering a fascinating insight into the culture and history of the local area. Among the stand-out exhibits are an extensive collection of more than 200 early local photographs, plus a turn-of-the-century barbershop, bedroom and general store. As well as its exceptional exhibits, the venue also serves as a creative learning centre, with an education outreach programme tailored to aid public schools in their study of local and state history.

10. The Popcorn Store

Popping out popcorn for more than 35 years from its Lincoln Square location, this family-owned store dedicated to the humble but oh-so-delicious corn kernel is unsurprisingly a major Arlington attraction. Their 100% home-made popcorn is served fresh out of the frying pan and into the mouths of sugar-hungry kids (and the odd adult too), with a wide range of takeaway options available too, as well as party and gift ideas. If you’re in Arlington on a rainy day with grumpy little’uns in tow, this is somewhere that’s guaranteed to put a smile on everyone’s face – and a liberal coating of sugar, too.

11. Living Science Center

The sustainably-designed Nature Centre is a wonderful place to take your kids to teach them about the value of nature. It offers a variety of exhibits, classes and public programmes, all aimed at educating visitors about the importance of protecting the earth’s resources. Spread across an impressive 12,000 square feet, it’s home to aquariums, terrariums, self-exploration stations, environmental exhibits, nature trails and a gift shop. On weekends there’s also nature walks and other animal exploration events, plus adult workshops and story times for kids.

12. Potager’s Other Stuff

This funky café is part counter-serve eatery, part organic coffee shop and part social meeting place. In short, it’s where to head to experience Arlington’s community spirit at its very best. The venue offers tasty food items, hard to find wines, natural healing remedies, and locally made craft items, with all food and drink priced at diners’ discretion. For this reason it is a truly unique attraction and well worth a visit if you’re in town, not only to offer your much-valued patronage and support, but also to sample some of the delicious treats served up by the philanthropic owner – who is rightly considered a local hero.

The essential guide to visiting Texas

Here’s everything you need to know about exploring the Lone Star State—when to go, where to stay, what to do, and how to get around.

Why you should visit Texas

Big skies and bigger parks. Barbecue and Tex-Mex food (don’t miss the breakfast tacos). A vibrant live music scene in   Austin and world-class birding in South Texas. Plus, cowboys .

Best time to visit Texas

Spring:   March and April bring colorful wildflowers (indigo-hued bluebonnets , red-and-yellow Indian blankets) to the highways and backroads in Central Texas. In Austin,   the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center has 284 acres of native plants inspired by the   Texas-born first lady . Outdoor festivals crowd the calendar. Austin’s South by Southwest Festival offers films and concerts each March; San Antonio ’s ebullient Fiesta   celebrates the city’s Hispanic heritage with parades, a stuff-your-face food festival , and concerts in April. And midway between Austin and Houston , the March Round Top Antiques Fair fills tents, barns, and hayfields with French furniture, vintage cowboy boots, and more.

Summer:   Y’all, it’s hot, with temperatures often soaring above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Beat the heat at one of the state’s Gulf of Mexico beaches , including South Padre Island , where you can watch hatchling releases of baby Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles . Or do as the locals do and go tubing in the Guadalupe River near New Braunfels or in the Frio River in Garner State Park .

Autumn:   Cooler temps lure Texans outdoors to events such as the Austin City Limits Music Festival , with bands in Zilker Park,   or the State Fair of Texas   in Dallas where you can eat a corn dog and wave to Big Tex ,   the 55-foot-tall animatronic greeter.   Lost Maples State Natural Area ,   northwest of San Antonio, has the state’s best fall colors. Celebrate New Braunfels ’ German heritage at Wurstfest .

Winter:   Mild weather makes outdoor activities pleasant around the holidays. In San Antonio, stroll the Riverwalk, where the bald cypress trees are draped with twinkling lights. Amid the Victorian downtown of Galveston , Dickens on the Strand brings costumed revelers and roving musicians.  

Four of America’s largest cities are in Texas.

In the south, San Antonio was once a part of Spain and later Mexico, a history that shows up at the Alamo and the San Antonio Missions . Houston has high culture (art museums, the acclaimed Alley Theatre ) and the NASA Johnson Space Center , where tram tours take in Mission Control and other sites.  

Sister cities Dallas and Fort Worth are just 30 miles apart in North Texas. In “Big D,” catch home games from the Dallas Cowboys football team or hear live music in funky Deep Ellum . A good art museum scene and cowboy culture rule in neighboring Fort Worth, where hatted herders lead longhorn cattle through the Stockyards District every day.

The capital city of Austin is known for live music, barbecue, and Barton Springs Pool , a natural, spring-fed watering hole and the soul of the city.

In the Rio Grande Valley,   an agricultural region bordering Mexico, there are cities such as McAllen and Brownsville plus the varied wildlife habitats (wetlands, thorn forests) of the World Birding Center .

In West Texas, El Paso   offers Tex-Mex bordertown culture amid the stark beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert and the foothills of the Franklin Mountains , best explored via mountain bike or hiking trails.

Parks and smaller cities

The Hill Country

The rolling terrain of the Hill Country in Central Texas is home to Fredericksburg , with its throwback main street full of indie boutiques and German restaurants plus 60-plus wineries in and around town. You’ll also find cowboy culture in Bandera and the beer-drinking enclave made famous in Waylon Jennings’   song “ Luckenbach , Texas .”

The Big Bend  

Two of the state’s largest parks— Big Bend National Park and the adjacent Big Bend Ranch State Park —lure hikers, bikers, and campers to the desert and mountain landscapes of West Texas. Stargaze at the University of Texas’ McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis, or check out the Donald Judd art installations in funky Marfa .  

Texas Coast  

The longest barrier island in the world, Padre Island stretches for 113 miles from the tip of South Texas to Corpus Christi .   Farther north, Galveston Island is the birthplace of Juneteenth and home to Victorian mansions.  

Panhandle  

Palo Duro Canyon , the second largest canyon in the U.S. and a state park, carves through the Panhandle for 120 miles.  

Getting in and around Texas

By plane: Dallas-Fort Worth International, George Bush Intercontinental in Houston, and Austin-Bergstrom International offer domestic and international service; San Antonio International serves Mexico and other cities in the U.S.

By bus: Vonlane   and RedCoach   have luxury bus service between Austin, Dallas/Forth Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. Valley Metro serves the Rio Grande Valley.

By train: Amtrak operates two train routes through Texas—the Texas Eagle   and Sunset Limited .

By car: Texas is easily accessible via major interstates including I-10, I-20, I-35, I-45, and I-37. One of the most scenic drives is FM 170, or the River Road, which hugs the Rio Grande and cuts through Big Bend Ranch State Park between Presidio and Lajitas.

In town: Major cities including Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso have bus service and bike share systems. DART rail in Dallas serves 65 stations. Austin’s CapMetro rail operates a single line from downtown to the northern suburbs. Houston’s three METRORail   lines connect tourist destinations. The Streetcar in El Paso loops through uptown and downtown.

Know before you go

Cultural history: Native Americans have occupied Texas for more than 14,000 years. Coastal tribes like the Karankawa were semi-nomadic, the Caddos in East Texas and Jumanos in the West farmed and traded. Comanches and Apaches hunted bison and raided villages in the north and west. Enslaved Africans helped the Spanish settle parts of Texas in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The flags of France, Spain, and Mexico once flew over the state, which declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and joined the U.S in 1846. Texas seceded from the Union and joined the Confederate States of America in 1861. The end of enslavement was announced in Galveston at the end of the Civil War, leading to the Juneteenth holiday .   Immigrants from around the world, including Germany and Czechia,   arrived during the 18th   and 19th centuries, making their marks on places such as New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, and Kerrville .

LGBTQ+ : Texas ranked 27th in a 2020 24/7 Wall St. report of the most LGBTQ+-friendly states in the U.S. Despite Texas’ conservative politics, cities such as Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Antonio get high marks on the Human Rights Campaign 2022 Municipal Equality Index scorecard.

How to visit Texas sustainably

Help preserve habitat by sticking to designated trails and roads. Support businesses that promote dark night skies. It’s legal to drive on public beaches, but watch for wildlife, including nesting sea turtles, and use reef-safe sunscreen. The Love Fredericksburg and Port A Way stewardship   campaigns encourage visitors to keep an eye out for wildlife and pick up litter. Look for LEED-certified hotels and restaurants committed to selling locally grown food.

What to read  

Empire of the Summer Moon , by S.C. Gwynne. This sweeping historic account follows four decades of fighting with the Comanches, Spanish colonialism, the decimation of the American bison and the arrival of railroads.

Forget the Alamo ,   by Bryan Burrough, Chris Tomlinson and Jason Stanford. The myths surrounding the Texas “cradle of liberty” get debunked and explored in this fascinating look at the evolution of the Lone Star State, its legends, and its prejudices. Valley of Shadows ,   by Rudy Ruiz. In this novel set in 19th-century West Texas, tensions along the Mexican border bubble up in dramatic, dark style—with a dash of magical realism.

New Mavs owners with casino ties preach patience on gambling in Texas as they plan for new arena

DALLAS (AP) — New Dallas Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont, part of the two families with casino ties that bought the club late last year , says the timing is uncertain for when legalized gambling might come to Texas.

Dumont also says the timing doesn’t matter as it relates to prospects for a new arena that would include a casino resort, because his family and that of the widow of Las Vegas Sands Corp. founder Sheldon Adelson are committed to Dallas long term.

“We’re patient,” Dumont said Friday in his first meeting with reporters since the December purchase, a few hours before the Mavs faced elimination in Game 4 of the NBA Finals against Boston. “We think long term. We’re not people who think in the short term.

Dumont is the son-in-law of Miriam Adelson, who is still the majority shareholder in Las Vegas Sands even after selling $2 billion in stock to take majority ownership of the Mavericks from Mark Cuban.

For the first few months after the $3.5 billion purchase, Dumont and Adelson were occasional courtside visitors at home games.

As the club surged into the playoffs and won three series to reach the finals for the first time in 13 years, Dumont — who lives in the Las Vegas area — became a constant presence, joined from time to time by his mother-in-law.

“This has been a hard-fought year, a hard-fought playoffs, for all the road that we had to go through,” Dumont said of Mavs, who were fifth in the Western Conference and have been the lower seed in all four postseason series. “It’s been unbelievable to be a part of, but really we’re looking to the future as well.”

Cuban, outspoken with a hands-on approach in his nearly 24 years as owner, is the alternate governor now. The 65-year-old still attends just about every game, and still sits close to the Dallas bench.

After the sale was completed, Cuban said he would have a strong voice in basketball operations. But he wasn’t quoted in news releases announcing recent contract extensions for general manager Nico Harrison and coach Jason Kidd.

The Mavs went from one of the worst franchises in sports in the 1990s to perennial playoff qualifiers under Cuban, winning the franchise’s only championship in 2011.

Cuban was honored by the Adelson family at a 2017 gala in Las Vegas, and Miriam Adelson spoke highly of him at the event.

“I’ve known Mark for a really long time,” Dumont said without addressing the specifics of Cuban’s role in basketball decisions. “And he and I have always had a great relationship. And so I love having him involved with the team. I think his record stands for itself.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said his sense that the ownership change and the relationships between all parties “is going very well.”

“Patrick appreciates Mark’s ongoing engagement, particularly on the basketball operations side where he’s been very hands-on for many years,” Silver said.

Casino gambling faces significant obstacles in Texas because leaders of the Republican-controlled state Legislature say they don’t believe most voters want gambling, and therefore it isn’t a high priority for lawmakers.

While proposals in the most recent legislative session in 2023 went further than before, there’s still a long way to go. The Legislature meets every other year, which means there are four more regular sessions before the lease at American Airlines Center expires in 2031.

“When we bought the Mavericks, we weren’t really thinking about casino gaming,” Dumont said. “Dallas is a great community. It’s a growing economy. It’s very positive for business. So when we had the opportunity for Mark with the Mavericks, that was an easy decision.”

Dumont believes the region is somewhat lacking as a tourist destination. While Las Vegas Sands no longer has casino operations in the Nevada desert, it has five properties in the Chinese gambling enclave of Macau and one in Singapore.

“If you look at what we do, we’re ground-up developers in scale, and we develop tourism assets for both business and leisure tourism,” Dumont said. “We feel like this is an opportunity that’s very good, not only for us, but for the tourism industry as a whole. Now, as part of that, we need casino gaming because of the scale of our investments.”

A major player in the Republican Party, Adelson pumped more than $2 million last year into a political action committee, called Texas Sands, which donated lavishly to state legislators and swarmed the GOP-controlled state Capitol with lobbyists.

“It’s something we’re thinking about, we’re working on,” Dumont said. “We’re spending a lot of time explaining to people what it means in terms of investment, the scale of those investments. Over time, hopefully we’ll be successful.”

Life Imitates Art

In their NEW location, within The District, the Arlington Museum of Art now offers free admission to their new Community Gallery. The Gallery at the University of Texas at Arlington showcases a variety of work by both undergraduate and graduate students ranging from a variety of mediums like sculptures, glass, paintings, photography and digital media, in addition to visiting regional and national exhibits.

Take a stroll outdoors through some of Arlington’s outdoor art displays. Set in the city’s first park - dating to 1924—find an eclectic range of sculptures from Texas artists in the Arlington Sculpture Garden at Meadowbrook Park . Discover and admire a massive kaleidoscope, a whimsical whirligig sculpture that moves with the wind and other sculptures from Texas artists. Within the landscaped setting of Richard Greene Linear Park , Artist Norm Hines created Caelum Moor, an environmental art installation composed of five groups of granite monuments. Each group has its own Celtic name, characteristics and intricate details carved into each structure.

Music To Your Ears

For you live music lovers, the Levitt Pavilion provides seasonal, free outdoor concerts and events in Downtown Arlington . In the height of the season, listen to genres ranging from country to Latin, jazz to R&B, indie to classical and everything in-between and beyond. For all free events at the Levitt Pavilion, seating is first come, first serve on the open lawn. So, pack a cooler with your favorite snacks and drinks, grab your lawn chair and blanket and enjoy live music and fun for all!

The More You Know

The  Historic Fielder House  is an Arlington institution and home to the Arlington Historical Society. Fielder House was one of the earlier brick homes in Arlington that now tells the story of life in Arlington at the turn of the century, from household items and toys to medical devices and even a barber shop. Along with family photos, there are exhibits showcasing the railroad, racetracks and other important parts of Arlington’s history. (A $3 donation is appreciated, but not mandatory.)

One of the coolest, but little-known pieces of Arlington’s history is Top O’ Hill Terrace . What began as a simple (and legitimate) tearoom, evolved into illegal gambling moonshine, brothels and murder. Called the “Vegas before Vegas”, this was the most exclusive invitation sought after in the 1930’s and 1940’s, with guest like Frank Sinatra, Ginger Rogers, John Wayne and Bonnie and Clyde. A raid conducted in 1947 brought the illegal activities to a halt and the property was then bought in 1956 by the Bible Baptist Seminary. Today, Arlington Bible University still uses the facilities, which retain many of the original structures, and allows visitors to explore the property. Tours are given by appointment only. (While this tour is free, a donation of $10 per person is suggested.)

The Great Outdoors

The 1,300-acres of River Legacy Park run along the Trinity River with ecosystems housing birds, fish, mammals and numerous plants and trees. Take a walk on the 8-mile paved trail, take a ride on the 10-mile mountain bike trail or bring the kids to play on one of the playgrounds. Peek into the Living Science Center and explore the terrariums and activities in the Science Center’s Atrium.

Amateur geologists can peer into Arlington’s ancient past through the layers of mudstone with fossilized clams, gypsum, and sandstone protected in the 40-acre preserve of Crystal Canyon .

With over 100 acres,  Veterans Park pays tribute to the citizens of Arlington who served in the military with a military veteran memorial. The park also has amenities like an 18-hole golf course, equestrian trail, playground, picnic area, native plant gardens and a hike & bike trail.

Almost Free (Budget-Friendly)

Legends of a different kind are showcased at the International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame , chronicling the sport’s 5,000-year history from ancient Egyptians to the first American bowling alley and beyond. Learn about the game’s ancient past, the present and even the high-tech future of the sport through interactive exhibits. You can even bowl on their ‘Highway 66’ mini lanes. Admission is $9.50 + tax, with discounts for seniors and those 18 years and younger.

Travel across the universe and gaze at the stars without a telescope at The Planetarium at UTA . Its 60-foot dome makes it one of the three largest planetariums in the state to explore the wonders of the night sky, the solar system and galaxies far far away. Admission is $8 per person, with discounts for seniors and children under two years old.

Immerse yourself in woodlands habitats at the River Legacy Living Science Center Discovery Room . Play games and learn about wildlife with the Discovery Room’s 30-foot interactive screen, get lost staring at the massive aquarium and check out the self-exploration activity table and terrariums with native wildlife. Admission is $5, with discounts for seniors, military, first responders and those 12 years and younger.

DETROIT -- Tigers rookie slugger Justyn-Henry Malloy has an appreciation for baseball history. His name in part derives from it. He was named after his father, Henry Malloy, who was named after the great Henry Aaron.

The younger Malloy wore number 42 in college at Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech in honor of Jackie Robinson. That obviously wasn’t an option when he got his first call to the Major Leagues a week and a half ago, not with 42 retired across baseball. So, while Malloy initially received number 36 for his debut in Texas, he thought about 44 as an homage to Hammerin’ Hank -- who wore 44 for all but one of his 23 MLB seasons -- and a tribute to his father, who made the trip to Texas along with his mom, to watch his debut against the Rangers.

However, 44 was taken. That number belonged to first-base coach Gary Jones. So, negotiations ensued.

“I lost a bet to him in Spring Training. I owe him a dinner,” Malloy explained to reporters last weekend. “So, I went up to him in Arlington and I’m like, ‘Jonesy, once I pay off my debt, what do I have to do? What wager can we put in place so I can get 44?’ His first response was, 'Oh, I'll just give it to you.'”

That seemed to settle matters, until Jones came back to him the next day and gave him a hard time.

“He said, ‘Ah, you know, I don’t think I can just give it to you. I’m having second thoughts,’” Malloy recalled. “He was like, ‘My [daughters], they love 44.’

“And I was like, ‘Jonesy, come on, whatever you need. I just think it would be so cool.’”

Malloy gave him his best argument: The family history, the cultural significance, everything.

“Then I said, ‘I just think it would be so cool that a young brother can wear number 44. And Jonesy was like, ‘Oh, I guess I’m not a brother, huh?’ I was like, ‘No, no, no, I didn’t mean it like that.’”

The conversation ended there, and Malloy wore 36 throughout the series in Texas. The Tigers had Thursday off before beginning a homestand last Friday against the Brewers. It marked Malloy’s first time walking into the clubhouse at Comerica Park.

Jones had a surprise waiting for Malloy: A number 44 jersey in his locker and on his nameplate. Jones had switched to number 86 in honor of his eldest daughter’s birth year.

“I had no idea,” Malloy told reporters. “It was a cool little surprise, and the first thing I wanted to do was find Jonesy and give him a big hug. And he was like, ‘You owe me.’

“I know I do. Whatever he wants. This is a dream of mine.”

It’s not only a nod to history, it’s also a bit of an early Father’s Day present.

“To have the opportunity to wear number 44 with the history that’s behind it -- not just Henry Aaron, the history of players who have worn that number and been successful -- it just brings good juju, good vibes,” Malloy said. “Just to be able to wear it and represent it well is all I want to do.”
