Crossing the imaginary line of the Arctic Circle as you cruise Norway’s starkly beautiful fjord-indented coast is a thrilling rite of passage to many travelers. Luxurious Arctic Circle cruises are the best way to admire the raw beauty of nature from every angle, as the scenery in northern Norway is simply breathtaking.

Jagged, tooth-like mountains, their peaks dusted in snow even in summer, extend along the coast as far as the eye can see. Hundreds of rocky islets and skerries, remnants of the last Ice Age, are scattered across the sea. Some are marked by a tiny fishing hut or summerhouse, but most are uninhabited.

During much of the summer, areas north of the Arctic Circle receive 24 hours of daylight, a time to observe the changing colors on the rocks and mountaintops as the sun skims the horizon. It’s a rare privilege to be traveling in such a beautiful, remote place, and you’ll have a real sense of being alone at the top of the world.

The simple stone-and-metal Polar Circle globe monument on the tiny, rocky islet of Vikingen, between Nesna and Ørnes, marks the spot where you’ve officially crossed into the Arctic. In fact, the “official” line of the Arctic Circle varies by several feet according to the Earth’s axis, but the monument, of course, is permanent.

Arctic Wildlife

Wildlife thrives in this pristine environment, so be ready with your binoculars. You could see puffins, with their jaunty, orange-and-black beaks, glossy cormorants drying their wings after a dive, majestic sea eagles, and eider ducks flying in formation. Whales feed in the nutrient-rich waters here, so keep an eye out for pilot, minke, and humpback whales, as well as dolphins and orcas. You could also see harbor and gray seals lying on the rocks in the sunshine.

Midnight Sun

On cruises to the Arctic Circle, you’ll see some of the most magnificent scenery imaginable as your ship glides along the Norwegian coast. In late June and early July, stay awake to watch the unearthly phenomenon of the midnight sun. At this time of year, the sun sinks slowly toward the horizon, casting a pale golden glow over the mountains and islands, and then rises again immediately. 

Culture & History of the Arctic Circle

The name “Arctic” comes from the Greek “arktos,” which means “bear,” and represents the region’s location below Ursa Major, the Great Bear constellation that circles the night sky above this point.

This is a sparsely populated area of Norway, and once you’re away from the coastal towns, it’s rich with folklore. A traditional Nordic legend, for example, is that the mountains that line the coast were once trolls, evil giants that roamed in darkness, suddenly turned to stone by the sunlight. A more modern reality is the fact that Norwegians, who love the outdoors, come here in summer for hiking, camping, fishing, and mountain climbing, with no concern for trolls.

The svalbard experience.

The islands of Svalbard rise dramatically from the  Arctic Ocean  halfway between Norway’s North Cape and the North Pole. They give eloquent evidence of nature’s slow but ceaseless industry, scored and corrugated by  glaciers that still cover 60 percent of their mass. Stony, sentinel peaks soar above deeply carved fjords and sparkling bays. In summer, the sparse tundra vegetation erupts under the endless encouragement of the  Midnight Sun . Migratory birds in their millions arrive from more southerly realms, to nest and breed and nurture their young on steep striated cliffs, shingle beaches and tundra meadows. Elaborately antlered  reindeer  graze the slopes.  Arctic foxes  and predatory gulls haunt the nursery edges, alert for opportunity.  Seals and walruses  haul out to join the breeding season, and patient  polar bears  patrol the rocky shorelines and floating ice, while  whales roll and breach offshore , feeding on the sea’s summer abundance.  Here and there, bleached testaments to past human endeavors endure: whalebones and weathered try pots from medieval whaling stations; the wind-sanded timbers of an expedition’s launching site; a hut where someone whiled away a long-ago, dark winter. Riding in  Zodiacs and paddling kayaks , observing from the decks and trekking on the islands themselves, we will experience and explore this  isolated, unspoiled and breathtakingly beautiful place , as it revels in the endless days of its short, exuberant summer.

THE ICELAND EXPERIENCE

Iceland is a paradox. The English words ‘fellow’ and ‘geyser’ are both of Icelandic origin. Of all the Northern lands, Iceland has in many ways the most civilized and settled population. Yet it is also a singularly  wild and unbridled piece of the earth, filled with jaw-dropping geologic marvels of monumental scale , enchanting landscapes of exceptional beauty, and is literally boiling with unbounded energy. Its cities enjoy an unbroken heritage of governance and lofty levels of modernity. But its  immense, ground-shaking waterfalls , soaring peaks and fuming, pyroclastic vents are interspersed with an untouched, green geography harboring  millions of nesting birds  alongside prosperous sheep farms, and  marine mammals  including whales of all sorts, porpoises and seals in the heart of its busily harvested summer seas. Some say the Vikings named it Iceland to hide the secret of its bounteous plenitude. But we will go ourselves, in  Zodiacs, kayaks and on foot to discover  what wonders await us in Iceland’s tall, winding fjords; broad, verdant valleys; and towering stone sea stacks.

THE GREENLAND EXPERIENCE

Greenland is the  largest island on earth , sprawling from near the North Pole southward across the Arctic Circle, where it wedges between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. Its circumference is fringed with  innumerable fjords , cut deep into the planet’s most ancient,  vividly colorful rocks .  These waterways meander between towering alpine ranges to where shining, serpentine glaciers flow from the immense  Greenland Ice Field  to calve massive amounts of ice into the sea. This fringe of fjords and mountains is where Greenland’s life is concentrated. In summer it is brilliant with wildflowers, boisterous with colonies of every sort of breeding birds, and alive with grazing bands of  caribou and musk oxen, Arctic foxes and polar bears . Seals, walrus and  many species of whales  from humpbacks to orcas, seis and porcelain-white belugas haunt the shores. Tiny, isolated human communities are scattered among the fjords, accessible only by boats or kayaks from the sea, afoot or, in winter, by dogsled. Our ship is the key to exploring this majestic place. We  discover the hidden vistas  folded between snowcapped peaks. We thread among towering icebergs in Zodiacs and kayaks, climb flower-bright tundra slopes and  meet the people  who live in this difficult, exquisitely beautiful place.

THE NUNAVUT EXPERIENCE

The  most remote and least-populated destinations  explored during Seabourn Venture’s Arctic season are the islands of the  Canadian Arctic Archipelago , now included in the huge territory of Nunavut. The islands form a curve complementing Greenland’s western coastline, enclosing Baffin Bay and the Davis Strait. We will visit the small community of Pond Inlet on northern  Baffin Island  for a look at modern  Inuit culture , still linked to age-old traditions by choice and necessity. On Devon Island we will land at the  ghost town of Dundas Harbour  and sail between flat-topped mountains to Croker Bay’s tidewater glacier. At Beechey Island, we can pay our respects at the graves of three of Sir John Franklin’s Northwest Passage expedition members who perished there during the long winter of 1845.   Lady Franklin Island and Monument Island  are named for the explorer and his wife, and their tall, weather-beaten cliffs, teeming with breeding seabirds and frequently patrolled by  polar bears in search of seals and walrus , provide a dramatic climax to our memorable season in the spectacular,  seldom-visited  realms of the Midnight Sun.

In some parts of the Arctic, there are rocky islands so windswept and desolate that you'd think you're on the moon; in other areas, there are islands covered with the most spectacularly beautiful mountains and glaciers. The common theme between them all is that they are rarely visited by humans.

Not that there aren't any humans in the Arctic. There are some, including Inuit who have lived in the region for centuries. But huge swaths of the Arctic lack a human presence, and the wildlife is equally sparse. Spotting the most famous denizens of the Arctic — the polar bear and the Arctic fox — is a rare moment to treasure.

As someone lucky enough to have traveled by ship to almost every corner of the Arctic over nearly 30 years as a cruise writer, I can say that the region is one of my favorite places to visit — maybe my very favorite. But it's not for everyone. It offers a subtle sort of beauty that reveals itself slowly.

Depending on the itinerary, an Arctic cruise might include days of bumping through icy waters covered by a fog so soupy that all you see out the window is a light greyish bubble all around. For all you know, you could be in a simulation.

But give the Arctic a chance, and it can be life-changing.

If you're unsure how to begin thinking of which Arctic itinerary might be the right choice, take a look at my picks for the five best Arctic cruise itineraries, chosen after a lifetime of trying just about every possible route in the region. As is typical for Arctic sailings, they are all itineraries that can only be done on polar-class expedition cruise ships — a specialized type of small, hardy cruise vessel built for polar travel and carrying its own landing craft for exploring.

A circumnavigation of Spitsbergen

If you only have time for one Arctic cruise, this is the one I recommend. Consider it a sort of "greatest hits of the Arctic" itinerary. You'll get a little taste of everything the Arctic has to offer on a single, relatively easy-to-do sailing as short as a week or 10 nights.

On a voyage around Spitsbergen, the biggest of a cluster of rugged islands that make up the Svalbard archipelago, you'll likely see many of the Arctic's best-known wildlife — polar bears, whales (if you're lucky), walruses, and giant colonies of Brunnich's guillemots and other Arctic birds — over the course of a few days. Compared to some places in the Arctic, this region is relatively rich with wildlife.

Spitsbergen is also about as scenic a place as you'll find in the Arctic, covered in mountains and glaciers. It's easily accessible by air through Longyearbyen, a settlement of about 2,500 people on the island's west side.

Located 600 miles north of the northernmost tip of Norway, which administers the Svalbard archipelago, Spitsbergen is also home to a few cultural oddities. Barentsburg is a semi-abandoned mining town operated by Russia under the terms of a century-old treaty, and Ny Alesund is a small mining camp that has been turned into a scientific research station. Spitsbergen itineraries sometimes include visits to both.

Ny Alesand, notably, was the spot where legendary explorer Roald Amundsen set off on a record-setting expedition flight to the North Pole by airship in 1926. Visitors to the outpost can see the still-standing remnants of the expedition, which include a tower that held the airship before it departed and a telegraph hut that broadcast news of the flight to the world.

Who goes there: Norway-based Hurtigruten is the best-known brand for Spitsbergen circumnavigations. It offers voyages out of Longyearbyen every summer. Most other expedition cruise operators, including Lindblad Expeditions and Seabourn, offer sailings to just a portion of Spitsbergen (usually the north and west coasts) combined with stops in Iceland and/or Greenland.

The west coast of Greenland

If you want to see icebergs and glaciers on a truly epic scale, a voyage along Greenland's west coast should be your pick.

It is home to what are, without a doubt, some of the world's most spectacular glaciers and snow-topped mountains.

On a trip down the west coast of Greenland, you will sail past huge icebergs that have shorn off the massive Greenland ice sheet on your way to visit at least a few of the coast's colorful Arctic settlements.

These settlements, notably, include Ilulissat, site of an iceberg-jammed fjord that is a marvel of the northern hemisphere.

If you're lucky during a visit to Ilulissat, you'll get to do two amazing things. One is to hike to an overlook near the town that reveals a massive pile-up of giant ice blocks that are slowly flowing down the fjord from a glacier. The other is a Zodiac ride to get close to some of the biggest icebergs that are stuck in the bay just offshore.

It is a landscape of icebergs at a scale that you can't imagine until you see it.

Who goes there: Seabourn, Lindblad, Silversea Cruises , Ponant , Viking and several other expedition cruise companies offer sailings down the west coast of Greenland. These voyages often include a visit to the eastern side of Canada's Northwest Passage or Iceland.

The Northwest Passage

For cruisers who love the history of exploration, a trip across the Canadian Arctic's Northwest Passage might be the ultimate Arctic adventure. That's because it offers a chance to follow in the footsteps of some of the greatest polar explorers of the 18th and 19th centuries, for whom finding the long-hidden Arctic route between Europe and Asia was one of the biggest (and deadliest) challenges of the age.

Stretching more than 2,000 miles from the Davis Strait near Greenland to the Bering Strait off Alaska, the still-often-iced-in Northwest Passage famously swallowed up the two-ship, 128-man Franklin Expedition of 1845 (a massive and massively equipped British exploratory party that disappeared into the ice, never to be seen again), as well as other explorers. It was finally conquered in 1903 by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen — who also was the first human to reach the South Pole.

Until just the last couple of decades, traveling through the Northwest Passage remained almost as daunting as it was during Franklin and Amundsen's time. But rapidly shrinking ice coverage across the Arctic, driven by global warming, has been making it more accessible. In recent years, half a dozen expedition ships or more have sailed into the passage annually during the warmest summer months.

Still, even now, only a handful of the hardiest expedition vessels make a full transit of the Northwest Passage in any given year, while other vessels only offer partial transits.

Note that the Northwest Passage is a relatively desolate part of the Arctic. A typical landing by Zodiac during a trip across the passageway might bring a visit to a forlorn, windswept island covered in boggy fields of lichen-covered rocks and low-lying grasses. That is, if the island isn't covered in drifting snow.

But such trips also include stops at iconic historic sites related to the region's early explorers. These include the ruins of the last known camp of the Franklin Expedition at snowy Beechey Island and the remnants of a short-lived Hudson's Bay Company outpost on Somerset Island.

Stops at Inuit settlements such as Arctic Bay and Gjoa Haven are also common.

Who goes there: Most major expedition cruise operators, including Ponant, Hurtigruten, Silversea, Seabourn, Lindblad and Adventure Canada (a specialist in Canadian Arctic trips), offer sailings that transit at least part of the Northwest Passage. Complete crossings are rare.

The North Pole

When it comes to bragging rights, it's hard to argue that any trip to the Arctic tops an expedition cruise to the North Pole.

The first undisputed expedition to reach the North Pole wasn't until 1926, when a team of explorers led by Roald Amundsen overflew the destination on the airship Norge. Even today, few humans have ever visited the northernmost point in the world — some put the number at just a few thousand.

Since the 1990s, working (and spartan) Russian icebreakers chartered by expedition travel companies have occasionally taken tourists in small groups to the world's northernmost spot. But since 2022, adventure-seekers have a more upscale option for a trip to 90 degrees north: A voyage on Le Commandant Charcot — the first built-for-tourists icebreaker.

Operated by Ponant, a French company known for upscale expedition cruises to far-off places, the 245-passenger ship is the first and only built-for-tourists cruise vessel capable of traveling to the most remote, ice-filled parts of the polar regions, including the North Pole.

Named for a famed French explorer, Le Commandant Charcot is unlike any other vessel that has traveled across the polar ice cap. It has all the elements of the most elegant hotels on land: spacious suites, stylish lounges, fine dining (including a restaurant with a menu designed by Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse) and a spa.

In other words, you'll not just be traveling to the North Pole, you'll be traveling to the North Pole in high-end comfort.

Who goes there: The only way for an American to reach the North Pole by ship is aboard the new Le Commandant Charcot, which is operating three or four trips to the destination each summer that are bookable through Ponant. Ponant also is chartering the ship to luxury tour company A&K in 2024 for a single North Pole sailing that is being sold through A&K. A Russian icebreaker that expedition travel companies have chartered in the past for such voyages, the 50 Years of Victory, still is occasionally making the trips, but it is not bookable for now by travelers from the United States and most other Western countries.

The Northeast Passage

A voyage across the Arctic's Northeast Passage is surely the most off-the-beaten-path Arctic cruise you can do — even more off-the-beaten-path than a trip to the North Pole.

Rarely offered and typically about 30 days long, these are true explorers' journeys across the almost unvisited Arctic territory that stretches across the top of Russia from Arctic Norway to Alaska.

These sailings cross five frigid seas — the Barents, Kara, Laptev, East Siberian and Chukchi — that in some parts traditionally freeze over during much of the year and only partially thaw during the late summer. Along the way, sometimes spread apart by hundreds of miles, are glacier-topped, often mountainous archipelagos and island groups that passengers can explore during Zodiac landings.

Highlights of these trips include seeing the Arctic's iconic wildlife — polar bears, Arctic fox, walrus, seals and musk ox — and historic sites related to the region's early exploration. Among them is Cape Amundsen, where you can still see the ruins of a small stone hut built by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen during a failed attempt to reach the North Pole. Amundsen's ship became stuck in the ice at the Cape for more than a year.

Only true icebreakers or the toughest ice-strengthened expedition cruise ships can make a Northeast Passage journey. Historically, they have occurred only occasionally. (I was on what was only the fourth voyage by any expedition cruise ship across the Northeast Passage, and that was as recently as 2018.)

Alas, for now, such trips are on hold, due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The invasion has brought all cruising to Russia by Western companies to a halt. But, in theory, these expeditions could resume in the coming years.

Who goes there: While Northeast Passage voyages are on hold for now, the trips traditionally have been offered by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, an upscale German cruise brand that was a pioneer of expedition cruises in the Russian Arctic, and New Zealand-based Heritage Expeditions. The latter company traditionally chartered an ice-class Russian research vessel that can hold 50 people, the Akademik Shokalskiy, for the trips.

WEALTH OF WILDLIFE

Svalbard boasts one of the Arctic’s highest concentrations of polar bears. They are the world’s largest land carnivores and have become a symbol of the imperiled Arctic wilderness. This is one of the best places in the world to view polar bears hunting in their preferred habitat: the pack ice.

Svalbard is home to impressive colonies of nesting seabirds, a variety of seal and whale species. This is a protected wilderness where we find flowering tundra and tidewater glaciers. You can also encounter a great abundance of nesting seabirds, and land mammals such as Arctic fox and reindeer.

In Greenland coastal plains are home to prehistoric-looking musk oxen and other wildlife.

What you can see in the Arctic

An Arctic expedition allows you to witness the geological and topographical characteristics specific to the polar regions. There are three main Arctic destinations that you can explore with Poseidon Expeditions: Svalbard, Franz Josef Land, and East Greenland.

Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago that stands out by being easily accessible and offering most of the key elements of the polar regions: icy mountains, tidewater glaciers, polar bears, and legacies of human endeavor. It is a great choice for your first Arctic encounter. Svalbard acted as a starting point in many legendary expeditions, and contains remnants of those times in abandoned North Pole staging areas, whaling camps, coal mines, and trapper’s cabins.

Franz Josef Land is a Russian High Arctic archipelago that is famous for striking landscapes and a history of polar exploration preserved by the cold. Travelers have a chance to encounter polar bears, walruses, and whales anywhere along the route. Geological wonders include the mystical spheres of Champ Island and basalt columns of Rubini Rock, which harbor thousands of seabirds.

East Greenland is widely known for the magical Northern Lights displays, a show that travelers have front-row tickets to from the ship’s deck. But this Arctic area has a lot more to offer, from the colorful autumn tundra inhabited by prehistoric animals like muskoxen to the largest fjord system in the world, Scoresby Sund, filled with towering icebergs.

Arctic Expeditions

Arctic Wildlife Safari

This Arctic expedition cruise starts and ends at Longyearbyen and lasts 9-10 days. Two days will be dedicated to learning the town’s history. This includes a walking tour of the town, a visit to a closed mine and the Svalbard Museum, and a short trip to Barentsburg. After that, we will embark on an expedition around the islands of western and northern Spitsbergen to explore the nature and history of the Arctic.

Best of Svalbard

On this voyage, we will attempt to perform a circumnavigation of Spitsbergen in 11-12 days, hoping to get closer to the polar ice edge and encounter even more of its wildlife: polar bears, Arctic seals, Svalbard reindeer, seabirds, and whales. Along our route lies the Northwest Svalbard Nature Reserve, which covers extensive parts of the largest islands of the archipelago.

Arctic Odyssey

This is an expedition cruise for travelers who want to experience the highlights of the Arctic on a single trip: polar bears and the glaciated mountains of Svalbard, enormous icebergs and the Northern Lights of Greenland, and the cultural heritage and volcanic landscapes of Iceland. Over the course of 14 days, we go from the northwestern part of Spitsbergen across the Greenland Sea to visit the Northeast Greenland National Park and Scoresby Sund. The last expedition day is spent in the Westfjords of Iceland, followed by disembarkation in Reykjavík.

The Unexplored Frontier

A voyage beyond the boundaries of civilization, the Franz Josef Land expedition cruise presents a complete change of scenery. The stark landscape is dominated by mountains, cliffs, and scree slopes. Even more surprising is the diversity of wildlife thriving in these polar conditions: polar bears, walruses, whales, seabirds, and other species are frequently spotted on land and at sea. Over two weeks and depending on weather and ice conditions, we may visit Bell Island, Champ Island, Cape Flora on Northbrook Island, and Cape Tegetthoff on Hall Island, among other islands of the High Arctic archipelago.

Arctic Sights and Northern Lights

In early autumn, the conditions in Greenland are ideal to observe the mesmerizing Northern Lights. We take advantage of that with one or two September trips each season, usually lasting 11-12 days. The expedition starts in Reykjavik, and we go across the Denmark Strait to the spectacular fjords, coasts, and islands of Scoresby Sund. Archeological sites, colorful tundra, wildlife encounters, and iceberg watching will be frequent and plentiful.

From the Highlands to the High Arctic

In 2022, we start this Arctic Circle cruise by exploring the British Isles, including the Shetland and Orkney islands, a haven for birdwatchers and history lovers. From there, we make our way to the Faroe Islands, with ancient cathedrals, traditional houses, and authentic charm. We then cross the Arctic Circle on our way to Jan Mayen, an uninhabited island with the northernmost subaerial active volcano on the planet. The voyage ends with a four-day exploration of Svalbard.

What you need to know

How to get to the arctic.

Our Svalbard and Franz Josef Land cruises start and end in Longyearbyen, the main settlement on Svalbard’s biggest island, Spitsbergen. You can get there by a regular commercial flight from Norway. At the airport, you will be greeted by our staff and transferred to a hotel, which is included in the cost of the program. A group transfer to the embarkation pier the next day is also covered by us. Similarly, our Arctic Circle cruise ends in Svalbard but starts in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Cruises to East Greenland start and end in Reykjavik, Iceland. We will book you a room in Grand Hotel Reykjavik, but cannot arrange a transfer from the airport. The drive from Keflavik International Airport to the city center takes around 45 minutes by airport shuttle (recommended) or taxi. Group transfer to the airport after disembarkation is included in the cruise price.

Depending on the destination you choose, you might require a visa. For trips starting in Longyearbyen, citizens from some countries need a visa to travel through mainland Norway. Franz Josef Land cruises currently require a valid Russian visa. Check with your consulate or embassy to find out more. For Franz Josef Land cruises, we provide a visa invitation letter which you will need for travel into Russian territory.

Facts about the Arctic

The most commonly accepted definition of the Arctic is the territory above the line of latitude about 66.5° north of the Equator, or the so-called Arctic Circle.

The northernmost point of our planet, the North Pole, is located in the middle of the Arctic Ocean. The North Pole and its surrounding ice-covered sea do not belong to any country.

The Arctic summer lasts from June to early September, and temperatures can reach up to 10°C (50°F). The polar day prompts intense ice melting. In the winter, it can be as cold as -50°C (-58°F).

The Arctic has a permanent population of more than four million people. The largest cities are located in Russia.

Arctic History

Early Arctic exploration goes back to the Viking Era, when these hardy seafarers sailed from Iceland and settled in Greenland in 981. As the climate got colder, the food supply became scarce. The next significant period started in the 1500s, when Europeans tried, and tragically failed, to find the Northwest Passage from Europe to Asia. One of those attempts led to the discovery of Svalbard: Willem Barentsz spotted its northwest coast in 1596. In 1906, Roald Amundsen, a famous polar explorer from Norway, finally succeeded in traversing the passage.

Franz Josef Land was discovered a bit earlier, by an Austro-Hungarian expedition to the High Arctic under Julius von Payer and Karl Weyprecht in 1873. The next big conquest was to reach the North Pole. Debated to this day, two explorers claimed to have done it first, both from America: Robert Peary in 1909 and Dr. Frederick Cook in 1908. Other expeditions followed to put the rest of the Arctic on the map. We now have the opportunity to see memorials and remnants of these conquests and follow in the footsteps of the great explorers with comfortable Arctic travel.

What will I do on the cruise?

We want our passengers to get as many experiences out of their Arctic tour as possible at a comfortable pace. Each cruise day will have a pre-set schedule and most likely will include one or two landings or Zodiac excursions that take place off the ship. This involves nature and wildlife watching, polar photography, walking tours, and boat rides. Evenings are usually spent on the ship, with all the necessary amenities for having fun and getting ready for the next adventure.

During the expedition cruise, travelers spend a significant amount of time off the ship, exploring islands, fjords, and landing sites along the route. Activities include Zodiac cruises, historical site visits, hiking or walking tours, and photography workshops. During landings, our expert guides take you closer to see the flora and fauna of the region and can provide educational context for every animal, plant, or landscape element. On an Arctic cruise, we also offer optional kayaking and an opportunity for a polar plunge.

Back onboard, passengers also have an array of options for entertainment and relaxation. The expeditions take place aboard the Sea Spirit , a modern 114-passenger Arctic cruise ship with spacious public spaces including a library, a gym, an outdoor jacuzzi, and a presentation hall. Meals are served at the restaurant three times a day. The open decks provide wonderful opportunities for wildlife watching and nature photography.

Optional (Ocean, Alpine)

On each Arctic cruise, we gather a small group of kayakers who get to discover the Arctic from a unique angle. This option is not included in the cruise cost and should be booked well in advance as the kayaking roster, limited to just eight lucky adventurers, fills up fast.

Do I need travel insurance?

Before your expedition, you do need to get insurance with evacuation and repatriation coverage of no less than $200,000 USD per person. Please note this is not a regular insurance package you get for other vacations. It should be purchased no sooner than six months before the cruise departure date. We also strongly recommend but do not require trip cancellation and interruption insurance.

How close can I get to the animals?

A certain distance is always required to guarantee the safety of both parties. Approaching potentially dangerous animals like polar bears or whales too closely is prohibited in order to keep passengers safe. And even if the animal does not seem harmful, we still need to respect its boundaries. We are just guests in the pristine wilderness of the Arctic and should act accordingly, keeping a camera distance. Rely on your experienced guides to assist you with this.

How cold is the Arctic?

An Arctic expedition takes place during the summer or early autumn, with average temperatures of 0 - 7°C (32 - 44.6°F). With appropriate Arctic-quality clothing, passengers can spend several hours off the ship and not get cold.

Is there internet onboard?

Complimentary Wi-Fi is offered on all our Arctic cruises. Keep in mind that the polar regions are remote areas, and the connection might not always be as stable and strong as we are used to in cities. Still, you will be able to read the news or keep in touch with your loved ones back at home.

What is not included in the cruise rate?

The most significant expenses that are not included are travel insurance and airfare, the same as for all major cruise lines. You might also need to purchase appropriate outdoor clothing before the voyage. The expedition price does include accommodation, meals, excursions, and a parka and boots for landings. The parka is yours to keep and take home.

Am I going to be seasick?

The Sea Spirit is equipped with Rolls-Royce stabilizers to lower the effect of the waves. Most of the routes during an Arctic cruise have the ship sheltered by islands in the ice-bound waters, with no ocean swell or heavy seas. We do have seasickness medication onboard during the expedition just in case.

Crossing the Arctic Circle

The Arctic Circle is the most northerly circle of latitude and girdles the top of the earth, encompassing the Arctic Ocean, the North Pole and the northernmost regions of Alaska, Canada, Russia and the Nordic countries (including Norway, Finland and Greenland). The landscape is stark but also magical, with towering jagged glaciers, snowy tundras and seas filled with floating sheets of ice. Known as the Land of the Midnight Sun, the region boasts 24 hours of daylight during its short summer season. It is then that the ice retreats and the Arctic’s fauna and flora put on a splendid show, with bright blooms popping up among the glaciers and wildlife coming out of hibernation to rear their young.The opposite occurs during the winter solstice, when the sun appears only briefly, and the phenomenon known as the aurora borealis lights up the sky with magnificent flashes of green, red, purple and yellow. The Arctic is one of the most rugged, remote, ice-choked and unexplored regions in the world and we can help you get there. If you are thinking about visiting the Arctic , read further:

Where do you go on an Arctic cruise?

The Arctic is often considered to be the area 60 degrees north from the equator, looping around the top of the globe. This area is defined by the Arctic Circle and it is above this circle that you can experience 24 hours of daylight in summer and 24 hours of night in winter. The Arctic Circle is not located as high as you might expect: It runs just above the middle of Norway and across the top of Finland and Sweden.

The Arctic includes parts of a number of different countries: Norway (including Svalbard), Swedish Lapland, Finnish Lapland, Russia (High Arctic North East), the United States (Alaska), Canada (Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories), Greenland, and Iceland (where it passes through the small island of Grímsey). Within the cruising industry, this region is also commonly called the High Arctic .

Your typical Arctic cruise could visit any of these regions, except Alaska which generally gets sold as a separate region. Some cruises include several different Arctic regions, such as an 18-day Greenland, Norway and Iceland cruise whilst other Arctic cruises just concentrate on one location, such as the Svalbard voyages which begin and end in Svalbard.

Regarding the North Pole, it is not currently owned by any single country. It sits in international waters and the closest land is the Canadian territory Nunavut and then Greenland. Cruises from Murmansk (North West Russia, quite close to Kirkenes, Norway) are the only specific ones that reach and land on the North Pole, provided that the weather is on their side.

Deciding on an Arctic cruise: Does the size of the ship matter?

There are a variety of options for passenger ships, each with different capacities for passengers. This can range from the capacity to carry a few dozen passengers to the capacity to carry close to 1000 passengers. The size of the boat you choose will affect the overall experience you have.

A key consideration is how efficient the ship is in catering for its travelling numbers. For instance, ships with well-planned social, panoramic and functional space makes for a much more comfortable journey. Larger ships feature a lot more cruise ship-style amenities that smaller ships cannot (dining rooms, saunas, fitness centres, bars), but they also need to be small enough to navigate into canals and narrower landscapes.

Not having to queue for anything, in our opinion, is the ideal situation. Alongside this, the right amount of service and expedition staff greatly improves your Arctic cruise. Experts on board, such as a migratory birding expert also makes a big difference to what you get out of the cruise.

Secondly, picking a ship that has an efficient system in getting you off for excursions is also very important. It might seem incidental, but when the ship stops and you are heading out for an excursion, it is very frustrating having to queue. You want a ship with effective ways to get you off the boat and into the action!

What time of year should I go on an Arctic cruise?

Weather, and ice particularly, often set the schedule for journeys to the Arctic. If you are interested in seeing polar bears, it is often recommended to travel in early spring just as the pack ice is breaking up, so that you are more likely to see the polar bears still at sea hunting seals. It is still possible to see polar bears throughout the peak and late summer, however during this time the polar bears are more often found on land. In this case, you are unable to pull up onshore and therefore watch the bears from rib boats. However, it is still a good, alternative way to see the bears. Late summer also brings more predictable weather, longer summer days and more colour to the landscape with flowers and autumn colours.

Many of the more remote, adventurous expedition voyages to the Arctic only have one departure per year, however several different shipping companies will offer virtually identical itineraries within days of each other to coincide with the optimum time to travel in that spot. You just need to weigh up what works for you with one of our polar cruise experts.

A degree of flexibility is necessary as conditions can be unpredictable even in midsummer. The captain and crew will always have alternatives on offer and the very things that cause your itinerary to be altered can themselves be a different or better option to what the cruise plan was. For example, getting stuck in unseasonal pack ice may mean multiple chance encounters with polar bears!

• Wildlife sightings at their height - especially birds and white arctic animals such as the fox and rabbit are easier to see. These animals think they are still camouflaged, so stay still when spotted, white behind the summer reds!

What are the highlights I should not miss?

Pre and Post Arctic Cruise Planning

There are a number of easy access points to the Arctic all around the northern hemisphere. Flights are regular, frequent, and as affordable as many other routes - and often direct! The Northern Europe section of the Arctic is very popular as the Gulf Stream that warms the west coast of Europe keeps the North Atlantic largely free of ice and therefore easy to access. Iceland, Greenland, Norway, Svalbard, and Russia in the area of the Barents Sea are all good starting points to experience the Arctic. Longyearbyen is the main town in Svalbard , Norway and it is where most Polar Bear Cruises start and end. Flights from Oslo are short and, if booked early enough, very economical.

There are many cruises that start or end in the Canadian Arctic that include scheduled or charter flights to / from major airports such as Ottawa and Edmonton. A number of smaller habitations such as Resolute, Iqaluit and Cambridge Bay have airports that can transit passengers from larger cities to waiting cruise ships. In the East, Newfoundland and Quebec can be the start or end points for cruises. If you are trying to compare Arctic cruise prices, don't forget to find out about these charter flights as they are often an additional cost to your cruise.

The town of Anadyr in the far eastern region of Chutotka region is a hub for land and sea journeys into the Russian Arctic. It is also the starting or ending point of longer Arctic cruises along the Northeast Passage ending at Svalbard, and one end of journeys that include Nome in Alaska.

Do I need a visa for visiting the Arctic?

The Arctic is a geographic rather than a political region and documentation or visas may be required depending on your country of origin for all or any of the countries you may visit during your Arctic trip.

To browse the internet on board you'll have to buy a wi-fi package. Royal Caribbean have a range of packages which start at approx $20 per day. If you want the best deal it is best to pre-book one of these before you sail. You don't need a package to use the Royal Caribbean app on-board.

Specialty restaurants allow travellers to enhance their dining experience during the cruise. This is a great way to add variety to your holiday or celebrate a special occasion. You can pay for meals in the special dining restaurants onboard.

When you take a Royal Caribbean cruise, as well as your cruise fare, you’ll be expected to pay a little extra to the crew members. A daily service charge of $18 - $20 per person, per day (depending on your cabin) is applied to each guest's SeaPass account. This can be paid before or after your cruise.

If you would like to do any excursions/tours while docked these will be an additional charge. Excursions/tours can’t currently be booked with us online but please contact us after you have made the booking if you would like to add these to your package. Alternatively these can be bought while on the ship but may be more expensive than pre-booking.

Overall a very enjoyable cruise with an excellent itinerary - no sea days and every place we visited was lovely. The quality of the food and service was outstanding. The two shows by the Royal Caribbean singers and dancers were excellent - we would have liked to see more in the 9 days. The other entertainment from visiting acts and onboard bands was ok but we have seen better on other cruises. The staff were very helpful, polite and friendly and the cabin service was excellent.

Great itinerary with late departures in ports. Food very good and very safe measures on the ship.

If you’re looking for adventure during your time in Geiranger, head to Storsaeterfossen, a waterfall with a beautiful walking trail, which goes behind it! There are two routes you can take to reach the waterfall, which start from the nearby Vesteras farm.

Foressevandring in Geiranger is a picturesque waterfall that you can access via walkways, platforms and stairs. Granting views out over the fjord, you’ll start your walk at the Norwegian Fjord Centre. With 327 steps to climb, the view you’ll be greeted with will be out of this world.

Another beautiful attraction to visit whilst in Geiranger is Fiordo de Geiranger, a scenic point which gives you views over the fjord - and spans an impressive 15 kilometres. Accessible from the port, the pictures you capture from this viewpoint will look like something out of a dream.

DAY 5 30 Jul 2022 Time at Port: from 10 AM to 7 PM

Just 400km from the Arctic Circle, Tromso is known as the 'Gateway to the Arctic' and is teeming with attractions no matter what time of year you visit. With stunning fjords and snow-capped mountains, there's no shortage of outdoor adventures to be found here, as well as a range of historical and cultural landmarks, and authentic, local cuisine. Tromso is also one of the best places to experience the Northern Lights.

The Polar Museum is a prominent attraction in Tromso which conveys exhibits showcasing the history of Tromso and the Arctic. Within the museum you’ll find exhibitions about winter trapping, sealing and illustrious characters such as Wanny Wolstad and Henry Rudi. Situated within a colourful 1830s warehouse on the seafront, it also features a museum shop.

Perhaps the most iconic landmark in Tromso, the Arctic Cathedral (also known as the Tromsdalen Church) is situated close to the Tromso Bridge and the Tromsdalstinden Peak. An active parish church, it has unique architecture and was built in 1965.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for breathtaking views over Tromso, head up the Fjellheisen cable car. A dual-gondola cable car, it soars high above the city and up Storsteinen mountain.

DAY 6 31 Jul 2022 Time at Port: from 7 AM to 4 PM

The gateway to the North Cape, Honningsvag is a compact city with just 2,800 inhabitants.The star of the show is the North Cape itself, with visits to this otherworldly coast being a popular excursion - stand at the impressive cliff for vast views out to sea and a breath of fresh Arctic air. As well as this, head into town for fresh Arctic seafood and crafts from indigenous Sami residents, or a chilly drink at Artico Ice Bar.

The church, which was constructed in the Neo-Gothic style, holds a prominent place in the community. After World War II, the people lived in the building, which was built in 1885, while the other buildings were being rebuilt.

Also known as Nordkappmuseet, the museum is home to an array of exhibitions, from temporary art displays with pieces created by both local and international artists to information about how the area has developed since the Stone Age and permanent displays covering marine development. Showcasing the cultural heritage of the area, it’s frequently listed as the top things to do in Honningsvag.

A popular performing arts centre, it’s housed within a traditional Nordic house that was rebuilt after the war. See an array of performances here during your stop off, from comedy shows to dramas.

DAY 8 02 Aug 2022 Time at Port: from 10 AM to 6 PM

The artistic, quirky and historic town of Alesund is not only a great stop off on your way to explore the Geirangerfjord, but a hidden gem in itself. Boasting unique Art Nouveau architecture throughout the town, you'll find an abundance of boutiques, bars and eateries surrounded by the backdrop of the picture-perfect Sunmore Alps. Whether you're on a leisurely stroll through town or enjoying outdoor excursions, Alesund is an unforgettable port of call on a Norwegian Fjords cruise.

If you’re looking for beautiful panoramic views of Alesund and scenic walks, Storhaugen park is a must visit. A picturesque green space high above the port town, you can take in sights of the quaint town centre, alongside Sunnmoresalpane mountain range and Sula.

Whether you want to learn about the captivating fishing history of Alesund or you’re simply looking for an activity that’s a little more unique, the centrally located Fisheries Museum is just the ticket.

Wonder through the beautiful town and discover all of the breathtaking Art Nouveau buildings, from houses to churches. A picturesque walk, there are often tours offered around the area, which will inform you all about the history of Alesund, alongside the captivating architecture.

DAY 9 03 Aug 2022 Time at Port: from 7 AM to 3 PM

UNESCO World Heritage City, UNESCO City of Gastronomy, and a quintessentially charming Norwegian port town, Bergen is a real haven for architecture enthusiasts, seafood fanatics and outdoor explorers. The iconic Hanseatic Wharf is a great place to start your exploration of Bergen, bringing you to the heart of this enchanting region through museums, galleries, shopping and some of the finest dining spots in Norway.

In Bergen, Norway, there is a fort called Bergenhus. The castle, one of Norway's oldest and best-preserved stone defences, is situated at the entrance to Bergen port. Early in the 1500s, construction of the fortification at Bergenhus started, and throughout the 1600s, the stronghold underwent continuous reinforcement, reaching its pinnacle development about 1700.

In the Norwegian city of Bergen, there is a funicular train called the Floibanen. It provides access to the Flyen Mountain, where there are mountain treks and stunning city views, from the city's downtown. It is a popular tourist destination in Bergen and among the most popular in all of Norway.

When sailing into Bergen, you’ll be greeted by beautiful views of the harbour. Aligned with colourful houses, cafes, shops and restaurants, this beautiful harbour is picture-perfect.

DAY 10 04 Aug 2022 Time at Port: from 9 AM to 7 PM

As Norway's fifth largest city, Kristiansand boasts numerous classic wooden houses, quirky boutiques, and popular sandy beaches that attract visitors from all over Scandinavia. Stop by Bystranda beach for its summery palm trees, or the Aquarama Waterpark for its warm outdoor swimming pool. Visitors will also find epic beach parties, live music at the Kilden Performing Arts Centre, and unique street art all around the city. For fresh seafood or just a light bite, head to Fiskebrygga harbour.

A zoological garden and amusement park, this popular attraction is situated in the heart of the city. Spanning 60 hectares, it was built in 1966 and is home to an array of animals, including giraffes.

Within this fascinating attraction, you’ll find an array of botanical, zoological and geological collections. Within the botanical garden, there are over 2,000 different species of plans, alongside a selection of captivating exhibitions.

Built in the 17th century, the Christiansholm fortress (also known as the Kristiansand Fortress) was constructed by Fredrrk III. Defending the city from invaders, it was designed by Willem Coucheron, a prominent quartermaster.

DAY 11 05 Aug 2022 Time at Port: from 8 AM to 3 PM

As Norway's capital city, there's no doubt that Oslo is a hub of stylish architecture, Scandinavian culture and quirky art scenes, as well as plenty of traditional Norwegian cuisine. The renowned Opera House and Holmenkollen Ski Museum are just two examples of the fascinating and eye-catching attractions you'll find in this cosmopolitan city, while outdoor adventurers will love exploring Vigeland Sculpture Park.

Akershus Fortress is an amazing place to learn about Oslo's past. Under king Hkon V, construction on Akershus Castle and Fortress began in 1299. The 1300s saw the completion of the mediaeval fortress, which was strategically situated at the tip of the headland and resisted several sieges throughout the centuries.

A bus ride away from the cruise port, Vigeland Park is an incredible sculpture park and museum that displays an array of exhibitions and pieces, including from the park’s namesake, Gustav Vigeland. A beautiful, tranquil park it spans an impressive 80 acres.

Situated within easy reach of the cruise port, in the centre of Oslo, the Oslo Opera House is the permanent home of the Norwegian Ballet and National Opera. Unique in design, it’s located within the popular Bjorvika neighbourhood. You can even climb the opera house, which grants incredible views of the Oslofjord from the top.

I just finished a 12-night cruise to the Arctic Circle — Here’s how I paid for part of my trip with credit card rewards

M y husband and I just finished up a 12-night cruise to Norway on the MSC Preziosa, during which we hiked through the wilderness, cruised through some incredible fjords, visited small villages and festivals and noshed on all kinds of delicious eats. Not only did we get to visit the highest point in continental Europe (Honningsvag, Norway), but our MSC Cruises vessel stopped in Tromso, Trondheim, Alesund, Molde, Bergen and Kristiansand, Norway, with the addition of four sea days on the ship.

Our cruising was a big money-saver upfront since cruise fare includes not only lodging and transportation, but also three meals a day, snacks, drinks and entertainment around the clock. A lot of the activities we did on our cruise — like hiking and window shopping — were free as well, so this trip was not only interesting and unique, but also fairly affordable.

The total cost for the cruise came out at less than $3,000 in a balcony cabin, which was quite a steal when you consider everything that’s included in a 12-night Arctic Circle cruise with stops in seven different ports. But we saved some money in other ways that helped make this trip a lot more affordable — including on our transportation to get there.

Here’s a rundown of all the ways we made our cruise to Norway more affordable this year — without doing anything drastic or sacrificing the activities we cared about the most.

I booked one-way business class flights to Germany with airline miles

The first way we saved on this trip was on our flights to get there, and I am lucky in that I have all sorts of rewards currencies to spend. One of my favorite airline loyalty programs is the Air France/KLM Flying Blue program , which is a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One miles and Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Since our cruise was going to depart from Hamburg, Germany — and we had a few days before departure — I opted to book one-way business class flights from Chicago (ORD) to Berlin, Germany (BER) with the Air France Flying Blue program for 67,000 miles per person plus $225.50 in airline taxes and fees.

This stellar redemption allowed me and my husband a full, lie-flat seat for the duration of the journey, and with all the bells and whistles you would expect. For example, we were served champagne and gourmet meals with real plates and silverware during the longest part of the itinerary from Chicago to Paris. We also had all the power outlets and foot room anyone could ever ask for on an airplane. We both got a few hours of sleep, too, so we arrived in Berlin, Germany rested and ready to explore.

We used points for pre-departure hotel stays

For our stay in Berlin, Germany, I opted to redeem 12,000 World of Hyatt points per night at the Grand Hyatt Berlin. This was easy since World of Hyatt is a Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partner , so all I had to do was move the number of points I needed from my Chase Ultimate Rewards account to my World of Hyatt account before booking.

For our overnight stay in Hamburg before the cruise, I redeemed 16,300 Chase Ultimate Rewards points for a stay at the Holiday Inn Hamburg – Hafencity. I got a rate this low by booking through my Chase Sapphire Reserve® rewards account, which offers 50 percent more points value when booking travel through Chase.

I redeemed Capital One miles for part of our cruise fare

Capital One miles are one of my favorite rewards currencies since these miles are so incredibly flexible as well as easy to earn. You can redeem miles from Capital One for gift cards, statement credits, travel through the Capital One Travel portal and even points transfers to airline and hotel partners.

While I normally transfer flexible rewards to airline and hotel loyalty programs to get better redemption values , I cashed in 58,000 miles for $580 off the price of my Norway cruise on the MSC Preziosa . This didn’t make my cruise free by any means, but it did help me use up some of my rewards while making my trip more affordable overall.

We used miles for our flight home

While I love flying business class for the overnight leg on international trips, I’m perfectly fine flying economy on the way home. With that in mind, my husband and I each forked over 44,000 United miles, plus $115 in airline taxes and fees, to fly home from Germany in the Main Cabin.

This was more miles than I wanted to spend and probably more than a similar flight would have cost with other frequent flyer programs. However, I had some miles in the United MileagePlus program I hadn’t managed to use in several years, and I made up for the miles I was short by transferring some points from my Chase Ultimate Rewards account to United at a 1:1 rate.

The bottom line

When it comes to earning credit card rewards for travel , a lot of people have an “all or nothing” mentality. This means that, if they don’t feel like they can earn enough in rewards to pay for every aspect of their vacation, they just don’t bother at all.

I tend to take the opposite approach. I like to pay for part of my trips in rewards and the rest in cash. I do this to stretch my travel budget as far as it can go, but also to pay for some high-end components of each trip, like business class airfare and stays at five-star hotels.

It’s currently 37°F in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, and it’s a beautiful summer day! Nuuk is just a few miles farther north than its neighbor, the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik. Both cities share the distinction of being the northernmost latitude capital cities in the world. Sailing along the impressive Greenlandic coastline, the icebergs dotting the sea and the snow-capped mountains gave way to a view of the kaleidoscope of buildings in the distance as the Bowdoin turned into the Nuup Kangerlua fjord and sailed into Nuuk Port and Harbor. The fishing and seafood industries are important contributors to Nuuk’s economy, and most of Greenland’s fishing fleet is based in Nuuk.

After sailing nine days from St. John’s, Newfoundland, everyone looked forward to some downtime from our studies and watchstanding duties and eager to explore the City of Nuuk. Our favorite time in Nuuk has been spending the evenings on the Bowdoin, catching up with each other after spending the day in the city, sailing the Captain Mac in the harbor, sharing local snacks, and having some personal time. We also enjoy watching movies––the Goonies has been a crew favorite so far!

We will be crossing the Arctic Circle at 66°32.33′ on our way to our next port in Ilulissat, Greenland. We have enjoyed our extended stay and are eager to continue experiencing all that Greenland has to offer.
