20+ Apayao Tourist Spots (UPDATED): Best Places to See

Learn more about the beautiful Apayao tourist spots in this article, featuring not only what the province is known for but also its off-beaten destinations.

Apayao province is considered the last ecological frontier of the Cordillera region as vast primary dipterocarp forests cover most of its landscape. In fact, the critically-endangered Philippine monkey-eating Eagle has recently been sighted in its remote forests.

Apayao, therefore, presents one of the best opportunities for ecotourism development. Ecotourism, if properly done, can boost the economic development of Apayao while protecting its natural environment and local culture.

Indeed, Apayao offers countless hidden natural wonders. It is a sure hit for those looking to experience a rustic and simple life in the wilderness.

Without further ado, here are the must-see tourist attractions in Apayao you should not miss.

Behold Apayao Province Tourist Spots

Dupag Rock Formation is a cluster of jagged limestone boulders that measure around 7 to 8 feet high. Climbing to the peaks presents a real challenge especially if you are not an ardent hiker. But surely, the thrill and the wonderful view atop will make up for that.

Due to the rough and sharp texture of the boulders, visitors/tourists must wear proper footwear and protective gear. The highest peak is known as Father Rock. It provides an entrancing view of the surrounding fields, valleys, forests, and rivers.

The topography of Dupag Rock made it a favourite hiding place for the locals and insurgents during the wars and uprisings. It, therefore, plays a major historical role in the area. It is now one of the most featured tourist spots in Luna, Apayao province.

  • Location: Luna, Apayao

Calanasan’s forests also host a rich diversity of other flora and fauna species including the Northern Luzon cloud rat. Giant Rafflesia flowers can also be spotted. In many areas, giant dipterocarp trees such as lawaan dominate. They can be as tall as a 10-story building. It would even take around 20 people hurdling together to circle their massive buttresses.

These keystone species must be protected from both legal and illegal loggers. After all, they play a crucial role in both the natural environment and the local communities. Fortunately, the local authorities are taking the initiative to do just that.

5. Gololan Falls

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

Explore Lussok Cave

In Brgy. Dagupan in the town of Luna, there’s a 200-meter cave system called Lussok. Before being developed as a tourist destination, Japanese soldiers, as well as local rebels, used the cavern as a hideout. Now, its many rock formations can be enjoyed by everyone. Exploring the cave begins with a short boat ride across a clear river leading to the mouth of the cave. From the entrance, the rock-scrambling begins. Crouch, inch, and clamber through the cave while marveling at the numerous rock formations.

Take Some Instagram-worthy Photos at the Marag Hanging Bridge

A long hanging bridge hovers a crystalline river at the village of Marag in Luna. The bridge affords visitors a breathtaking 360-degree view of the mountain ranges and river system. The river below it is a favorite among locals – they can often be seen swimming or having a picnic here. Floating cottages are available for rent. You may join the locals and have your lunch here or just take a few moments to take some photos and enjoy the panoramic view.

Cruise through Manacota Underground River

Another cave system in Luna is Manacota, but compared to Lussok it is more river than a cave. Guests will go on a short trek to the mouth of the cave where they will board a boat that will charter them to the river. The water in the river is cool and surrounded by lush canopies. After passing a tunnel, guests will alight the boat and enjoy walking through the runnel, under thick canopies and up huge boulders. Be sure to take a dip in the cool waters of the river and let your weariness wash away.

Cool down at Gololan Falls

About an hour trek down through a thriving rainforest in the town of Kabugao would lead you to the 33-meter Gololan Falls. The raging water is slender and set on a sheet of mountain rock. It is picturesque and is definitely worth the one-hour jungle walk. Plus, once you see the gushing falls, it’ll be difficult not to take a dip into the azure basin below it.

Check out the Mataguisi Church Ruins

Dating to as far back as 1608, the Mataguisi Church Ruins in the town of Pudtol is one of the few mortar-and-brick structures remaining in the province. It stands as a reminder of the colorful past of the province and a testament to the outstanding architectural skills of the locals. Through the efforts of the local government, the ruins have been cared for and are being maintained. Mass is also regularly being conducted here.

Boulder-dive at the Maton River

Also in the town of Pudtol, Maton River is deemed as one of the cleanest rivers in the Philippines. Surrounded by trees and dotted by huge boulders, the river is a popular bathing spot for locals. Daring adventurers can often be seen clambering up the boulders and jumping into the clear waters. Take time to wade in the clear, turquoise-emerald waters to shake off the day’s heat. If you’re up for it, you may join in the locals for a round of boulder-diving.

Where to Stay in Apayao

Apayao may be a less-traveled destination but there are already plenty of accommodations available. In the town of Luna, the local government runs its own lodge. There is also a resort called Star Jewel which is right beside the main thoroughfare where buses and other public transportation pass by. Furthermore, Luna also has a lot of commercial establishments so making it a home base is ideal. However, if you want to venture further, Pudtol would be a great place to stay, too. It’s a nice town to explore especially if you’re into unspoiled wild places. RDJ Farm is an affordable and value-for-money place to stay when in this town.

For those who are also exploring Mountain Province, Sagada is a good base. There are lots of accommodation and dining options, good for families and solo (or duo) travelers. Before heading back to Manila, another favorite stop is Baguio City in Benguet. This has become a highly urbanized area in the region. If you plan to stay a night or two in Baguio, here are some of the top hotels as rated by Agoda users, in no particular order.

Apayao may just be a place you knew from your Philippine history class. Or you may have heard of it before but never even got your fingers googling it somehow.

This far-flung province in the Cordillera Region , framed by lush mountainscapes & crouched by evergreen fields, is the  stuff of out-of-radar getaways. It’s a universe of eco-destinations, exquisite indigenous culture & quiet retreats.

Although none are held secret, they remain largely unexplored by many tourists. And when you decide to come, you’ll find that everything is worth the pursuit.

Get to Know Apayao, Now!

Oh you must have  basked on the beaches in Pagudpud . Sure, you’ve gone deep in the caves of Cagayan Valley . You’ve probably feasted on miki in Bangued & got inked by Apo Whang-od in Buscalan . But then you missed Apayao, the province at the heart of it all.

Where is Apayao?

The provinces of Cagayan Valley, Abra, Ilocos Norte & Kalinga surrounds Apayao. It is part of the Cordillera Administrative Region, dotting Kabugao as its capital town.

We may be more familiar with the name Kalinga-Apayao . But these two provinces have long separated in 1995. The Ymandaya & Imallod of the Isneg tribe are their indigenous community who live with the rest of the Ilocano population.

Kabugao is a first class municipality & is the center of trade, education, transportation & governance. However, Luna is also a preferred place especially among tourists since many attractions are in this quiet town.

What to See in Apayao?

Ecotourism is what they are most proud about. It offers its guests with various ways to experience nature — from underground rivers to skyscraping rock formations.

Note that there’s actually more to see than what’s on this list as the province continues to provide infrastructure support & guidelines.

Dupag Rock Formation

Perhaps, the Dupag Rock Formation in Luna is the most coveted attraction in the Province. This cluster of razor-like limestone rocks puncture the panoramic Marag Valley. While getting there is already half the excitement crossing a river, going up is an adrenaline-pumping fun.

Lussuk Cave and Underground River

Just when you think that only Puerto Princesa has an underground river , Apayao will surprise you with an equally exciting adventure.

The thrill begins with a short upstream paddle on the placid river leading to the mouth of Lussuk Cave. What makes this experience different from Palawan is the chance for tourists to explore the different chambers on foot.

Lussuk or hole in Ilocano used to be a hideout of the Japanese in World War II. It is also called Crystal Cave because of its sparkling mineral deposits.

Manacota Cave and Underground River

Manacota is just a hop away from Dupag Rock Formation. With a spout of raging river stream, this spot makes it awesome for a cold dip surrounded by massive stone walls.

This subterranean river runs about 700 meters illuminated by streaks of sunlight peeking through rock crevices & thick foliage.

Cagandungan Hanging Bridge

The thrill of standing on a rickety wooden bridge makes Cagandungan an attraction to add  on your Apayao bucketlist. Spanning about 150 meters, it connects Barangay Marag and Cagandungan. Also, it is the site of the annual Rakit Festival, parading its bountiful harvests aboard bamboo rafts.

Bayugao Falls

It might not be the highest or widest of waterfalls but these mutli-tiered cascades make up for a perfect adventure. It cuts through the thick of forest of Marag Valley & flows through a gushing roar of sparkling water curtains.

Emilia Church Ruins

The old church ruins of Emilia in Pudtol is a reminder of the short-lived Spanish conquest of Apayao. The Dominicans built it in 1684 but was abandoned in 1815 due to attacks of the local Isneg.

Mataguisi Church Ruins

Just close by Emilia Church are the ruins of Mataguisi Church. Today, what’s left of this 1608 stone church are its façade and some surviving walls.

The Cordilleras is famous for chasing sea of clouds. And yes, Apayao is no exception with Mt. Kilang as its entry. But if you can’t scale its 1,656 elevation, don’t fret. Just drive up to Solsona-Apayao Road in Calanasan & soak in all the cloudy drama.

Why Visit Apayao?

It’s simple — give this place a chance to tickle your wanderlusting fancies. Allow them to showcase their colorful culture. Savour their indigenous cuisine . Explore someplace new.

When to Visit Apayao?

Summer is the best time to experience Apayao. Although, in May it can get really very hot. To add, heaviest rains come in December to February.

How to Travel to Apayao?

The fastest way is to fly to Tuguegarao or Laoag . Then, take onward overland trip to Kabugao. Alternatively, you can also take the bus from Manila to Apayao. Terminals are in the following locations: North Star Bus Line (Quezon City), Florida Bus (España).
