Intieresting to see how it all works!

Went with family while visiting area. Had reservations. Huge warehouse. Very busy. Interesting to see how it all comes together.

I took this tour to see the gigantic facility and how it is run. The place is overwhelmingly large and the amount of products hard to fathom. We got to see the unloading, box assembly, product bins, and numerous machines. The place runs 24 hours a day. It was a bit of a commercial for the "Amazon culture." All in all, a worthwhile experience.

Very interesting tour, our guides were very nice. We had a nice tour, they took a picture of each group which was very nice since you can’t take photos. At the end of the tour they answered out questions and gave everyone a nice water bottle

Toured the fulfillment facility today - tour guide's name was BJ and he was efficient and knowledgeable. The sheer size and scope of this operation is absolutely phenomenal. The tour takes you on a brief overview of the operation - it is not a lengthy tour, but questions were taken and answered. I am a loyal Prime customer and will continue as such - encouraging that Amazon has raised minimum wage recently and have a deliberate focus on employee training with good benefit packages.

We had a wonderful experience in touring the Amazon Fulfillment center in Phoenix. Our guide B.J., did an excellent job in structuring the tour so it was interesting to people of all ages. The tour started in the lobby of the Fulfillment center where we were registered for admittance and granted guest badges. From there we were escorted to a meeting room where we were issued individual listening devices and a small bottle of water. The personal listening devices are used so you can hear the guide over the noise within the center. Within limits, we were shown Amazon’s complete operations as well as detailed explanations concerning Amazon’s values and focus with regard to customer service. After a one hour tour we returned back to the meeting room, where we were asked to keep the head phones of our listening devices and asked to take either an Amazon water bottle or a “square” that keeps changing shapes ( trust me, anyone with small kids will love this small gift from Amazon.)

The guided tour is only an hour long, but you get to see the massive shipping center and learn all kinds of interesting statistics. Amazon invests a lot in this tour: four employees were involved, each person received a personal headset, and a small gift was given to each attendee. And it's free! Only catch - you have to get a reservation. Well worth it!

Tour Amazon Fulfillment Center Free Warehouse Tour

Inside Amazon’s Secret Warehouse: A Jaw-Dropping Tour You Can’t Miss! Amazon Fulfillment Center

Tour Amazon Fulfillment Center for great family fun. Maybe you live by one. Or, if you are taking a road trip, be sure to look up if there is an Amazon warehouse along the way. Amazon offers free tours which are fun for the entire family.

We toured the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Phoenix, Arizona which is a sortable facility. Amazon offers free public tours at 22 of their locations in North America. They offer tours at 47 sites globally. (Update, we went in 2019; tours stopped in 2020. Amazon is still waiting to resume in-person tours but keep reading to learn about our tour and things to know.)

Teens and adults who order products on Amazon will appreciate seeing the operations firsthand. While on the tour, I saw SO MANY PRODUCTS that I’ve actually ordered on Amazon which was interesting to see. Kids will also find it interesting as it’s a huge space with lots of machines and automation.

I went with my husband, my tween, teen, and my in-laws. We all loved it. Put this on your list of things to do when they reopen.

Tour Amazon Fulfillment Center

They have currently suspended tours. However, you can learn about our experience from going in 2019, and why you will want to plan a visit when they reopen.

When they do reopen, you will have to reserve online in advance for a scheduled day and time. They don’t allow walk-ins. You will need to:

  • Tell them your name as it appears on your driver’s license or ID
  • Provide your birth date

Outside Amazon Fulfillment Center in Phoenix

You will receive an email confirmation with your tour details. We were told to wear close-toed shoes; no sandals, flip flops, etc., and to bring our IDs. (They aren’t necessary for children.) In addition, they wanted long hair pulled back, no flowing scarves, etc.

Amazon Warehouse Tour Time

When does Amazon offer tours? At the time that Amazon was offering their free tours, they were offering tours twice a day, Monday through Friday. Some locations may offer weekend tours as well.

When you go to the Amazon free tour website, you can choose the date and time you want. When we were going, in June, we booked a month out. At that time, there were many choices of dates and times. After registering, we received an email confirmation.

While You are Waiting for Amazon to Reopen their In-Person Tours

In addition to their live, in-person tours, Amazon also offers three other types of free tours. With a strong internet connection, these are good options while their in-person tours are suspended. They are also ideal for people who live far away and who are curious.

  • Live Virtual Tours – 60 minutes; schedule online
  • Video Tours – Watch whenever
  • Amazon Future Engineer Tour (AFE) – 60 minutes; schedule online

Live Virtual Tours that are one hour long to replicate the experience of their in-person tours. They offer a Q&A. You register online; they are free. You have to register at least six hours in advance. Once they are filled, the option will not appear.

They also offer Video Tours which you can watch on demand.

Their Amazon Future Engineer Tour is for teachers and students to show the engineering and computer science behind their operations. This is an educational option for robotics clubs, Scouts, etc. as well. They offer a Q&A session.

What Cities Have Amazon Fulfillment Tours?

In the United States, 16 states have free Amazon tours. One Canadian province does as well. These are the Amazon locations that offer tours:

Arizona: Phoenix

California:

  • San Bernardino

Colorado: Thornton

  • Jacksonville

Indiana: Jeffersonville

Maryland: Baltimore

Massachusetts: Fall River

Minnesota: Shakopee

Nevada: Las Vegas

New Jersey:

  • Robbinsville Township

Tennessee: Chattanooga

Utah: Salt Lake City

Washington: Seattle (Headquarters tour; you can also tour The Spheres on select Saturdays)

Wisconsin: Kenosha

Canada: Ontario

Hopefully wherever you live, there will be one close by.

How Much are Amazon Tours?

The great news is you can tour Amazon Fulfillment Centers for free! It is free and fun for the entire family.

What is the Age Minimum for an Amazon Tour?

There is a minimum age of six years old to take the warehouse tour. On our tour, there were 24 people. In addition to our family, there was one other family with tweens and teens. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

It’s fun to go with your family or friends. We went with our family of four. I also invited my in-laws to go. Whether or not you are a frequent Amazon shopper, you will be awed by the tour.

When You Get to the Amazon Tour

At the Amazon tour we went on in Phoenix, there is a small lobby with a few chairs. We could see into the warehouse. There were two employees checking people in and verifying IDs.

How Long is the Amazon Tour?

We were in the Amazon building a total of 58 minutes, though these will vary by location and the tour guide. (Our guide seemed to try to keep it moving along.) This included checking in, sitting in the room getting instructions, going on the actual tour, returning the headsets, and being escorted back into the lobby.

Is There a Lot of Walking?

After waiting in the lobby, you will walk to a room with tables and chairs where you will hear the instructions and get the headsets.

After this period of sitting, for the remaining duration of the tour, you will be walking and standing. The actual tour, including people’s questions, took about 40 minutes.

There were stairs. One person in our group was in a wheelchair and was able to take the elevator which was right there. They also also service animals (dogs).

Taking Photos While You are on Amazon Tour

You can take pictures outside of the Amazon building as well as inside the lobby. After that, you aren’t allowed to take pictures or video.

About 3/4 into the tour, you will stop in an area which overlooks the deliveries. The tour guide will take your picture and either email or text it to you. More on this below.

It’s Amazon!

Taking an Amazon tour is an amazing opportunity. We learned the Phoenix center is the size of 28 football fields!

Going on an Amazon Fulfillment Center tour means you get to go behind the scenes with this mega operation!

They have streamlined their processes so well… truly it’s a well-oiled machine. Haven’t you ordered something from Amazon and had it in less than 24 hours? It’s truly remarkable how they do it. And you get to see it for yourself.

What Happens on Tour Amazon Fulfillment Center

  • After you check in and it’s time to start the tour, the tour guides will lead you to a room.
  • On your way to the room, you will be walking in the warehouse. You will see lots of products piled up in different areas. Also, you may see some employees.
  • Once you are in the room, the tour guide will give you a short talk. They also talked about the benefits of working for Amazon. They really seem to care for their employees.
  • The tour guide gave us a disposable water bottle to take with us. In addition, they gave us headphones with disposable ear covers.
  • Then the two guides lead us through the different areas in throughout their fulfillment center. This includes the entire process from finding the products in the warehouse, to packaging, to shipping.
  • There is a photo opportunity during the tour.
  • We returned the headset at the end of the tour.
  • They gave everyone a reusable Amazon water bottle to keep.

Amazon Main Entrance

Is it Loud?

The Amazon Fulfillment Tour is loud but not unbearably so. Because you have the headset, you will be able to hear the tour. The only difficult part is sometimes, it was hard to hear the questions and answers. If you are lucky enough to have a tour guide who loudly and clearly repeats the question (we didn’t) and then answers for people in the back to hear, it will be great.

Amazon Warehouse Tour Review

We loved it! It’s rare in today’s world that you can go on factory tours. Very few remain throughout the United States due to liability reasons.  To be able to go inside the mammoth Amazon center is fascinating.

Anyone who has ever ordered anything on Amazon, from the typical to the obscure, will find it interesting and will learn a lot.

It’s also likely you will leave with a sense of wonder and awe that they process so many orders each day. The scope and scale is truly unfathomable. Even though they have honed it, they continue to improve their processes.

You will get to see a lot of the fulfillment center. You are right in it, walking past employees, seeing the employee awards on the walls. In addition, you will see lots of different products as well. We saw at least five things we had purchased from Amazon!

After leaving there, I had such a higher respect for their employees, that I started doing two things differently:

  • Instead of ordering from Amazon whenever I think of something, I keep a running list on my phone. Now, I place orders less frequently, and bundle them together.
  • I’m a Prime member and usually have many options to choose shipping speed. In most instances when possible, I choose the 3 – 5 day option instead of the 1 – 2 day option.

Amazon employees work hard!

Seeing the Products in the Warehouse

It was interesting to see how they put the products in areas seemingly-randomly throughout the warehouse and how automated it is so that everyone can easily find the items. They place and store items in a random order which they said is more effective for them than grouping all the same types of products together.

So many products

We were able to walk to one section lined with yellow containers — “pods” — each packed with unrelated products. These pods contained thousands of different types of products.

The guide explained how the employees, the “pickers,” found the products to fulfill the orders using bar code scanners. There were random Lego sets next to plastic forks next to rubber gloves and a hammer.

We saw a yo-yo next to gardening shears and a stationery set.

It was interesting to see how this random system worked for them. At first, I thought they were people’s orders because it was so random.

But think about what you order on Amazon. Oftentimes, it’s very different types of things!

Packing area

From there, we went to the packing area. They showed us how the products are put into boxes and envelopes and how they seal them with tape. They had automatic label and tape dispensers. We were also able to see where the shipments come in off the delivery trucks.

Before we got to the shipping sorting section, we were able to look down at the area where the deliveries came in.

Can you imagine all the products Amazon receives each day? There are thousands that come in and thousands they send out.

Our tour guide said they try to reuse the boxes that they receive deliveries in. The rest get recycled. At the Phoenix Fulfillment Center, we were a story higher looking down on this area. This is where we were able to get our picture taken.

Photos Inside the Amazon Tour

You have a chance to stand alone or with whomever you came with to get your picture taken with the center in the background. They gave us some props to hold, including Amazon boxes. We posed with the deliveries down below.

The staff below was on a break or a shift change. I’m thinking they arrange the tours around this to give the employees some privacy.

After taking our picture, they asked for a cell phone number and texted us the picture. You can have it emailed if you prefer. It seemed like everyone in our group got their picture taken. It went quickly. While we we were waiting, we were busy looking out at everything.

This section was a little rushed — it is Amazon, after all! — so we didn’t feel we could ask for a second picture of just our kids.

Amazon Fulfillment Center Phoenix tours

They had different areas for packages with expedited shipping versus packages with slower shipping. It was amazing to see the different conveyor belts and areas for packages that were sending out in one day, via Amazon Prime, and for slower shipping.

We loved visiting the Phoenix warehouse and look forward to touring other fulfillment centers in other locations… even if it was a Sortable warehouse again. No matter which Amazon location you visit, you will surely learn something new and see new things.

What We Liked Seeing at the Sortable Warehouse

  • It’s free!
  • It was fascinating to be inside.
  • They really seem to value their employees. It made me wish I lived closer to an Amazon center to work there.
  • There is a fun Amazon sign to take a picture of when you enter or exit.
  • They handed out headphones — not ear buds — which were comfortable. In addition, they gave us disposable ear covers to put over them.
  • They seemed to schedule the tour when there were less staff around… we liked that. It helped give their staff more privacy.
  • We were all blown away by the way they sorted things randomly.
  • At the end of the tour, they gave everyone a reusable Amazon water bottle.

Downsides to Amazon Tour

  • It felt a little rushed. I’m sure all of us could have thought of 10 questions and lingered around each step in the process.
  • Hit or miss on tour guide.
  • Can be difficult to hear questions.

Tour Amazon Warehouse Options: Sortable, Non-Sortable, Robotics

Depending on which location you visit, you will see different things. There are three types of warehouses to tour Amazon Fulfillment Center.

Sortable facility

The Phoenix Fulfillment Center is considered a sortable facility. This is where they have everything from pin cushions and bags of candy to blenders, pillows, backpacks, planters, and poker sets.

Non-sortable facility

These fulfillment centers ship larger items such as furniture, rugs, etc. These Amazon facilities ship large items and won’t have all the smaller items we saw on our tour.

Robotics sortable facility

These centers ship products smaller than a typical-sized microwave. Robots work alongside the workers to ship products. You can find out which center you will be visiting when you click on the city on Amazon’s website.

  • When you scroll down, go past the FAQ section, to the Site Information section.
  • You will see 01.
  • It will say 01 The Fulfillment Center.
  • Read the paragraph to learn if that location is Sortable, Non-Sortable, or Robotics sortable.

Personally, I think going on any Amazon tour would be amazing. If you will be near a facility that offers them, schedule a tour! I would see the Sortable tour again, even in Phoenix, because it was that good. When traveling elsewhere, I would make it a priority to schedule a tour as well.

Tour Amazon Fulfillment Center Field Trips

It would make for an excellent field trip. It would be an ideal outing for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and other organizations and clubs. Amazon makes special accommodations if you have a group of 20 or more. Adults and children will enjoy it.

Tour Amazon Headquarters in Seattle

Oh how we wanted to do this when we were in Seattle in 2019! Unfortunately, the times didn’t work out for us because we needed to get to the airport. You can tour Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle, Washington. Amazon is Seattle’s largest private employer.

They are also temporarily closed. However, when they reopen, you can take an Amazon headquarters tour.

Two Saturdays a month, they open The Spheres to the public. When they open again, this is surely something to put on your Seattle to do list. Seattle Spheres is their outdoor botanical wonderland. They also have a greenhouse and so much more.

Amazon is a Great Place to Work

Something we learned at the Amazon Fulfillment Center tour is that employees definitely walk and stand a lot. It also seems like it would go quickly because of all there must be to do. You can tell they treat their employees well.

We walked past an employee break room which was large and comfortable-looking. Amazon seems to be an incredible company. It’s up to each household to balance it with shopping locally. They give back to their communities as well.

We were happy were were able to see everything from the shipments coming in, the areas the products were stowed in, the packing section which included boxing, labeling, and taping, and the shipping out section.

It was fun to part of the Amazon excitement. We appreciated all that goes into their operations. As much as we try to buy local, you can’t beat the convenience of Amazon. It was incredible to be inside their operation and to try to fathom how they can get all these products to their customers overnight or in days.

We felt “part of the group” being Amazon Prime subscribers.

It’s a really great tour for families. Most companies do not offer tours. Kids will really enjoy seeing behind-the-scenes. See other factory tours we were on in Denver, CO and Milwaukee, WI .

Tour Amazon Fulfillment Center warehouse

See for yourself how Amazon fulfills millions of orders each day!

It’s fascinating they open up their world to the public, especially in times when so many companies do not.

They train and offer steady employment for area residents and should be viewed as an asset to the areas in which they are located.

Please note, we visited the Amazon Fulfillment Cente r in Phoenix, AZ in June 2019. Currently, their tours are suspended. Hopefully, you can take one of the Amazon Fulfillment Centers tours next year. There may even be one in the area in which you live. It’s truly a wonderful free tour.

In the meantime, as I stated above, you can take advantage of the free Amazon tour from home. They offer Live Virtual Tours that last an hour. You need to register in advance online, and they are free. While it doesn’t match the experience of actually being in the fulfillment center, it is still definitely interesting to see.

They also offer prerecorded Video Tours that you can click on and watch whenever it’s convenient.

What a joke Amazon is. Can't deliver packages. Drivers leave packages in water. Amazon doesn't care. Amazon is a leading e-commerce platform that offers a wide range of products to its customers. With its vast selection of products, Amazon has become a go-to destination for millions of people worldwide. Amazon's products are designed to make people's lives easier and more convenient, whether they are shopping for everyday essentials or looking for unique gifts and even healthcare products. (Amazon did the exact opposite--it expanded what it offered to its consumers. This decision to diversify their range of products with the market trends allowed them to continually meet the interests and expectations of their customers) Details: Amazon's diversification strategy is multi-pronged. It includes expanding into new markets, such as developing new products to serve new markets. Information (Amazon's impact in the ecommerce world is often summarized in one phrase: The Amazon Effect. But what is it exactly? Well, its meaning varies depending on each respective industry.) Details the Amazon Effect refers to the difficulty many companies face when directly competing with Amazon in retailing and selling products.

ABSOLUTELY the WORST fulfillment center EVER! They must have the Amish delivering their packages! Conshohocken had their shit together as my packages would normally arrive between 1-3 PM, since the opening of THIS location (which is CLOSER to me), they have screwed up sooo many of my deliveries I'm about to call Jeff! Hey Mt. Joy? GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER!!!

So, you find yourself reading this because your interested in working for Amazon PHX6, researching or just have a morbid curiosity about Amazon culture and the goings on within the warehouse. Let's take a ride on the crazy train that is PHX6. My Amazon career began Feb of 2016. Ended as of Nov 2020. In that time, nearly 5 years, I worked virtually every process path and excelled in anything my AM (area manager) put in front of me. My primary process was PICK but I was called on for special projects nearly every week. I was dependable, hard working, smart and solved problems while collaborating and working as a SAFETY and Kaizen team member. I was a part of the Amazon elite. I was untouchable. No. I was expendable. A number. On that final day, LP calls me in HR. They ask me if it was possible that I'd forgotten to scan a bag of chips or Cheetos in early September. I say, "it's possible but highly unlikely. I've always scanned any and all food product." The food vendor, Ralph's vending has provided "footage" of me walking away, not scanning said Cheetos. For the sake of argument, I don't agree to the charge of theft but decide I'll compensate Ralph's for the alleged loss and accept a fair and just consequence from Amazon(write-up). Senior leadership and the HR business partner refused to reasonably meet me halfway. I urge them to look at my personnel and safety record. It's impeccable! The alleged theft was an honest mistake. I was willing to rectify the situation beyond reason. It didn't matter. They wanted me GONE! I asked myself why. The charge of theft of Cheetos was just a pretext for my termination. It was an retaliatory act against me. That is obvious to anyone. It all becomes clear. Through sheer determination I found PHX6 GM email. Before the "final and binding" phone call I personally emailed the GM to preface the phone call and tell my side, a human side to the situation. I attempted to communicate with wording outside the cold policy that holds million dollar trade secret theft on same shelf as hot Cheetos. Little did I know all my effort was for naught. They decided it was my time to go. As it may be your time someday, if you decide to work here. Just ask Chris Smalls. Ask Maren Costa and Emily Cunningham how they were victimized by Amazon. For speaking out against Amazon's abhorrent profit over people philosophy. It was to be my fate as well. I become an outspoken critic of Amazon safety policies in relation to COVID. As PHX6 backlog ballooned into the millions the company retracted its unrestricted UPT(unpaid time) policy and removed the $2 extra COVID pay incentive. They needed bodies to move product COVID be dammed. As many dozens of associates become ill and three COVID related deaths at PHX6, I talked to my peers and coworkers. Urged them to stand up and demand reinstatement of, at minimum the unrestricted use of UPT. We should have a choice in this most dangerous time to work, to risk ourselves and vulnerable family members. IF we decide to work, a fair wage for our risk and loyalty to a company whom couldn't care less about us! My incessant plea for the safety and well being of my friends and fellow associates has made me an Amazon "enemy of the state". I was an exemplary associate and the way I was treated was just cruel and highly unjust! Why?! Because I spoke up when none had the courage to stand! I demanded Amazon treat us as humans and not expendable code in a database. SHAME on you PHX6 senior leadership. Your dirty deeds shall find you one day. I spoke out for you reader. I became a loudmouth to protect my friends and fellow associates. Senior leadership have removed me in an attempt to silence me. My voice is even louder now! Fight with me

Amazon, what can I say, I love em. I go on line and quickly find just about anything I want and I can buy it at a lower price, often without the high taxes. More often than not, I order it one day and the next day it is at my doorstep. It's like calling out for a pizza the day before you want it. Amazon Prime is also great, no shipping fees and a boatload of other things like videos that are top notch. Jeff Bezos for President, he has seen a need and more than fulfilled it.

I ordered a holster it did not fit when I Start of the return process I was informed that it was from a 3rd party seller , I never buy from 3rd party sellers for exactly this reason I went to my order , went to information about order and it showed the one that I had ordered from Amazon the individual I was speaking to on the phone kept asking information about what I was seeing then asked me for the order number and lo and behold the screen changes after I come back from looking up the order number ,Luckily I took a picture of my order , as always the machine wins and they said that I am incorrect even though I have a picture of what I was talking about . I would Support your local business instead of dealing with this giant that will not respond to simple Improprieties aka illegal procedures or just another word for lying . It's only 15 bucks but it's the principle .

The Amazon group at phoenix Mohave greeted us very warmly and took us all for the 1 hour fulfillment tour last month. It was amazing to see the story behind the clicking of the things we see online to actual implementation of the same .they showed us how they pick stuff ,how they pack ,label and despatch them .They are very courteous and answered all my questions.the only requirement was to wear comfortable clothes and shoes to walk the tour and also tie hair to shoulder length .they told us about various career opportunities with Amazon ,the success stories ,the customer appreciation and the precision and detailing that goes so that they deliver the goods at our doors.photography is prohibited inside except for a place where they allow us to click one photo for memory sake. I loved the tour and will recommend to everybody .however recently due to the health concerns over Corona virus I heard the tours have been on hold for this month .I give a 5/5 for the centre from their employees to their product everything is top notch !!

For the second time in less than a month, an order was lost. They do not have an ETA. Their answer for everything is a $5 Amazon Credit. I spent a total of at least an hour on chats and they feel 2 $5 credits is good enough. My second order was for a rodent problem and I did not want to wait or reorder. I place 100 orders a year, but I think they are slipping. I realize that mistakes happen, but the solution is always throw a $5 credit at it.

This was my second Amazon tour - my first tour being in Houston. This warehouse is open for tours on Saturdays which was great for a family outing. While still highly automated, it is more people-driven than machine-driven in that there aren't roomba-looking machines going 30+ mph in a cage carrying massive shelves of products. The tour is ADA-friendly and a well-tuned operation. The tour group was rather large - 20+ people. I had worn flats which is technically a closed-toe shoe, but they provided me a pair of new socks and rental tennis shoes. They have the system to a science - they also have hairbands to tie up long hair. Once you enter, you can stow away any personal belongings in a locker. You go to a classroom and receive a bottle of water and the listening device with headphones as it is rather loud in the warehouse. There's tape on the floor to keep you where you're supposed to be. The sheer size and scale of the operation is mind-boggling. Tour operators welcome questions, but if you ask some questions that get kind of sensitive (like how the workers are timed), they won't be able to talk about it. More so than the Houston tour, this definitely felt heavily branded and staged - an ad for both consumers and prospective employees. No photos allowed inside except for the one photo opportunity they'll take for your group towards the end of the tour. You'll get a cute Amazon toy car as a souvenir. People have a lot of mixed feelings about Amazon (hence the low reviews that don't have to do with this tour), but the actual tour was enjoyable for all ages and very well executed.

Phoenix Amazon fulfillment center gives tours to the deaf community, thanks to this couple

Amazon kicks off its 2020 public tour season at its fulfillment centers, and this year was improved to be more accessible for the deaf community.

PHOENIX - Amazon kicks off its 2020 public tour season at its fulfillment centers, and this year was improved to be more accessible for the deaf community.

Thousands of people visit fulfillment centers every year to learn exactly how items are packaged and how they get to your door, but Friday's group is unique. About 45 members of the deaf community in Phoenix showed up to learn more.

Diane Kilthau and Raymond Kilthau, who are part of the deaf community, say their daughter is an American Sign Language interpreter for Amazon, and asked if they wanted a tour.

"It is great to have an interpreter for access, you can understand the tour and I know there are a lot of public tours who don’t have them or provide an interpreter and we don’t understand or get value, so we had full accessibility and enjoyed it,” Raymond said.

Word spread within the deaf community, and with much interest.

Diane and Raymond brought 35 people from the deaf community last week, and 45 this week.

“Diversity and inclusion [are] incredibly important to Amazon," says Lisa Guinn, Amazon spokesperson. "That extends not only to our employees and guests that come in, so we are proud to provide accommodations to our tour guests when needed.”

During the tour, an ASL interpreter signed all of the information from the tour guide, sometimes standing on a stool to make sure everyone could see.

The Kilthau couple says it means so much that a large company like Amazon is willing to include them and others in the deaf community. They hope to bring more members of the community to the center soon.

Anyone 6 years and older can take a tour at a fulfillment center. You can learn more on  Amazon's website .

Amazon to bring more than 800 jobs at new 1.2 million-square-foot facility in Mesa

amazon distribution center phoenix tours

Amazon's new 1.2 million-square-foot facility, its largest distribution center in the nation , will create more than 800 jobs to the east Valley.

The "storage and distribution center," the first of its kind in the state, will have its grand opening Friday, and promises to make remote shopping a little easier for people throughout metro Phoenix.

The facility, focused on housing third-party businesses’ stock items sold on Amazon’s website, is located along Elliot and Hawes roads in Mesa.

Rodney Huffman, the general manager of the center, has worked for Amazon for more than a decade and has seen how the company’s presence has grown in metro Phoenix and more specifically on the west side of Maricopa County.

As a longtime resident of the east Valley, he’s looking forward to building Amazon’s presence there. He knew Amazon’s growth would reach Mesa because of the investment happening around Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

Large centers like this new one need to build from the ground up in undeveloped areas to accommodate the scope of work and storage, Huffman said. The center has started operations but likely won’t be fully operational until August when hiring is done.

Jobs at new facility: Huffman said he’s in the middle of a hiring blitz to fill the 800 to 900 jobs that are available. At full capacity, the center could employ up to 1,300 workers.

The average pay will range from $15 to $21 an hour, depending on experience and shift.

A lot of employees that work in the west Valley who live in Mesa, Queen Creek or Florence are considering transferring to the east Valley center, Huffman said. The center will bring them a better quality of life to not have to make the one-hour or more commute, he said.

It’s an effort by the city to build up employment options in southeast Mesa to keep jobs in the city and bring down commute times for its residents.

What happens inside Amazon’s new building: A report from Amazon showed that more than 60% of sales are from independent sellers , many small to medium-sized businesses. The new facility will house products from independent sellers at a lower rate than if they stored them on their own.

Products at the Elliot Road facility are taken off the shelf once stock is low at the fulfillment center, where most orders are packaged. Huffman said this helps ensure customers don’t see any interruptions to their shopping. The building is a relatively new concept to the company which was introduced during COVID-19-related supply chain issues.

In Arizona, 10,000 independent sellers use Amazon to sell their products and last year sold more than 44 million products, according to the company.

Amazon’s footprint in metro Phoenix: The company has more than 33,000 full and part-time employees in Arizona, according to data provided by Amazon.

In Arizona, there are 17 "fulfillment and sortation centers" and 13 "delivery stations."

With Mesa's new center, customers throughout the Valley who buy items sold by third-party businesses are less likely to see a product go out of stock.

In 2019, Amazon was the metro Phoenix’s 19th largest employer, according to The Arizona Republic database.

career tours small

I was just amazed of all the computer science is used to get a package from order to ship...I know a lot of people say that computers are putting people out of jobs, but this tour shows young people that is not true. It helped them to understand the jobs might look different, because humans have to be behind all the technology.
“I struggle to find STEM resources that are actually interesting to kids, that they might connect with and set a goal. I want to motivate them to graduate and have a career because we have a low graduation rate, and I think this tour could be part of a program that leads to that.”
The video was very helpful, informational, and entertaining and I loved learning about how the packages are shipped.
I loved this experience! The videos were descriptive but not too heavy on technical terms, so my students were able to understand without issues. The addition of Kahoot trivia was genius! It kept my students so engaged, and we all learned a ton about Amazon! I also love the added teaching tool- the note catchers!
It was really entertaining actually - I didn’t realize how high tech everything was. My favorite part was the workers actually telling us about themselves it really shows how they are people just like us that we can one day become.
The students absolutely loved this tour! [They] really liked pretending to ride along on the conveyor belts. After, students kept discussing the tour and how much they enjoyed the experience. As a teacher, I appreciate how easy it was to prepare for the lesson.
My kids said things such as “This is so fun!,” “Can we do this more?,” and “I am learning so much! I did not know that!” They had such a great time working together, laughing, communicating, talking with one another and the teachers...The presenters were amazing! It was very engaging and well made!
It was wonderful that you included both students and STEM professionals to make the experience both relatable and inspiring...[There] was so much new vocabulary that was introduced but explained in a way that the students could grasp it. The Alexa technology really got their attention because they use it in many of their homes.
