EXPLORE ALASKA BY LAND AND SEA WITH A ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISETOUR

Alaska cruisetours – experience the greatness of the great land.

Big, bold, and untamed. Alaska is like no other place in the world. The rugged southeastern coast represents some of nature’s best work. The intricate waterways of the Inside Passage. The high cliffs of Misty Fjords. The deep bays that welcome whales every summer. Where life is centered around the water, a cruise is the ideal choice.

But a journey into the interior reveals so much more. Mighty rivers fed by massive glaciers. The vast taiga forests and rolling tundra of Denali National Park, and towns where moose stroll the streets.

With a Royal Caribbean Cruisetour, you enjoy both. By combining a seven-night sailing along the southeastern coastline of Alaska with a small-group tour, it’s a complete Alaska adventure. If you’re going the distance, discover the best of Alaska by land and sea.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Alaska Cruises Insider

The sheer size of Alaska lends itself to a wide variety of terrain and travel experiences. This diversity means you need to be prepared for a lot of change while traveling.

The best time to travel to Alaska depends on your priorities. If you're interested in the Midnight Sun, the longest day of the year is June 21, when you can experience close to 20 or more hours of sunlight in some parts of the state. If you're more interested in the Alaska Northern Lights, the earlier sunset in later summer will allow more contrast and better views of this natural wonder.

No two days will be the same, and you'll need to pack your clothing to prepare for temperature changes throughout the day. Think layers: zip-up sweaters, boots, rain jackets.

Best Helicopter Tours to Take when Flying over Alaska

Alaska Helicopter Tours

There's nothing quite as exhilarating as a helicopter tour over Alaska's sprawling landscapes. Take your breath away as you travel above its amazing glaciers.

Alaska is not a formal place; people even wear jeans to the opera. Focus more on comfort when deciding what clothing to pack.

Cameras, binoculars, rain ponchos and jackets are useful, but add these to the souvenirs you'll be picking up and soon your bag will be too heavy to tote around. Bring along a quality day pack to make it easier to hold your necessities.

Learn a few words in Alaska's local lingo: The "Alcan" is the Alaska-Canada Highway, for example, and "fish stories" are the local version of tall tales — unreliable yarns of mythological proportions, often told by fisherman.

ALASKAN CUISINE WILD IS THE WAY

Alaskan food focuses on locally sourced ingredients that reflect the state's rugged terrain and the vast oceans surrounding it. These nutrient-rich waters serve up some gorgeous fish and shellfish, from super-fresh salmon to huge Alaskan King Crabs that can feed a crowd, while game meats and berries from the wilderness form a perfect marriage of flavor.

Best Alaska Smoked Salmon

SALMON IS CENTRAL

Fresh-caught wild salmon is served up at backyard BBQs and the finest restaurants. For something different, try the sweet and savory treat Indian Candy, salmon that is sweetened and smoked till hard.

Typical Alaskan Sourdough Bread

SOURDOUGH WON'T LET YOU GO

Sourdough is such an important part of Alaskan culture that long-time Alaskans are actually called sourdoughs in local parlance. Try a sourdough bread bowl filled with salmon chowder for a hearty lunch.

Alaskan Wild Berries Pie Dessert

GO WILD FOR BERRIES

Alaskan wild berries are sweet and pack a powerful punch of flavor. Whether served up in jams, candies, pies or cobblers, Alaskan blueberries, high-bush cranberries and other local wild berries are a staple when it comes to Alaskan summer eats.

RELATED PORTS

Whether you're interested in hiking through a forest, trekking to glaciers or a shopping spree downtown, the towns along Alaska's inside passage provide a variety of adventurous activities. Alaska cruise ports such as Juneau and Ketchikan are small cities with their own personalities. Anchorage is the state's largest city and a gateway to the rest of the state. Denali National Park takes you out of the city altogether, into a wilderness full of spruce forests and snow-capped mountain peaks.

Travel with the experts for a carefully curated, value-packed discovery of the world's most iconic destinations. Our tours are bursting with must-see sights, rich experiences and quality inclusions, all at an unbeatable price. Bucket list dreams are ticked off on these all-encompassing journeys.

Day 1 Calgary

Welcome to Calgary! Make your own way to your downtown hotel where upon checking-in, you have the remainder of the day at your leisure.

Calgary International Airport (YYC) is located approximately 20km from downtown Calgary. There are a range of transportation options available. You can purchase a private airport transfer when completing your booking, or taxis are available for approximately CAD$45-55 per vehicle.

Day 2 Calgary Banff National Park Lake Louise Canmore

This morning we set out to meet fellow travellers at breakfast before we tour the sights of Calgary. We admire such modern and historic landmarks as the Calgary Tower, Fort Calgary and the skyscrapers of the commercial district. Leaving Calgary behind we set our sights on the Rocky Mountains, which can already be seen, far off in the distance. Experience the majesty of the mountains as we first travel through the foothills and then enter Banff National Park. Enjoy a tour of Banff National Park, featuring the Banff town site, Tunnel Mountain, a spectacular view of the Banff Springs Hotel, Johnston Canyon, the Hoodoos, the Bow Valley Parkway, and the world-famous Lake Louise.

Day 3 Banff National Park

Today is yours at leisure to further explore Canmore and Banff National Park. You may wish to take part in an optional tour to the Icefields Parkway and Columbia Icefield.

Note: If you do not select the Columbia Icefield optional tour, you may still travel with the coach to the icefield for time at leisure while the other travellers are riding the Ice Explorer.

We travel north along the Icefields Parkway to experience a wealth of breathtaking scenery. Crystal blue-green lakes, fresh mountain streams, deep forests, and snow-capped mountain peaks are the order of the day. After taking a snow coach ride along the Athabasca Glacier at the Columbia Icefields, return to Canmore in late afternoon. NOT AVAILABLE ON APRIL/EARLY MAY DEPARTURES

Day 4 Canmore Vernon

Our drive today is on the famed TransCanada Highway, following a route chartered by the railroad engineers and fur traders of the mid 1800's.

Kicking Horse Pass leads us from the Rockies into the Columbia River Valley before we climb through Rogers Pass in Glacier National park. The Selkirk Mountains receive massive amounts of winter snow and are home to over one hundred active avalanche zones.

We continue through the Monashee Mountain Range to the rugged interior town of Vernon.

Day 5 Vernon Vancouver

Today, we leave the Okanagan Valley and mountains behind, passing through the lower mainland. Few roads in Canada pass through a greater variety of vegetation within such a short distance, than Highway 3 between Osoyoos and Tashme. At the western end there are dense rain forests; to the east is a desert where prickly pear cactus thrives.

We drive the Coquihalla Highway and then enter Vancouver. Upon arrival, we will enjoy a sightseeing tour of Vancouver featuring highlights as Stanley Park to see the collection of totem poles, English Bay, trendy Robson Street, Gastown, Chinatown, Canada Place and the Cruise Ship Pier.

Day 6 Vancouver Embark Cruise

You have some time this morning for some last minute shopping before being transferred to the Vancouver Cruise Terminal for your journey to Alaska. Your included transfer to the cruise port departs at approximately 1pm.

Once you have checked in to the cruise, begin exploring all that your ship has to offer.

Ports of call may vary cruise to cruise based on ship schedules.

Day 7 Inside Passage

Your ship offers the perfect platform for viewing British Columbia’s Inside Passage. This archipelago spans 25,000 miles from Seattle to Prince Rupert near the Alaskan border. Here you’ll ply calm waters sheltered between the British Columbia mainland and Vancouver Island. Along the way catch a glimpse of breathtakingly rugged scenery, plus staggering wildlife like salmon sharks, white spirit bears, and millions of seabirds.

Day 8 Sitka

Sitka truly offers the best of Alaska. Its small-town appeal stems from a unique blend of Russian, Tlingit and American history. Its snow-capped peaks and volcanic Mount Edgecumbe pose amongst the state’s most postcard-worthy scenes. And its rare wildlife astounds, from Saint Lazaria Island’s orange-beaked puffins to Alaska Maritime Refuge’s 40 million seabirds. This is off-the-beaten-track Alaska, where you can kayak Sitka Sound alongside swimming sea otters or fly-fish for the world’s biggest halibut. Whether it’s hiking along Baranof Island trails or listening to tribal stories passed down for generations, in Sitka the midnight sun never sets on adventure.

Day 9 Juneau

You can’t get to Juneau easily without a sprint by air or by sea. But once you arrive you’ll find majestic views and rich culture in every corner. With its snowcapped mountains, misty rainforests, massive glaciers and bounty of wildlife, Alaska’s remote state capital is the perfect place to dive into nature. Framed by Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts, the city’s picturesque central area offers centuries-old bars, boutique shops and historical landmarks. For a taste of the local culture, visit the historic district and the Alaska State Museum. And for outdoor thrills, you can take your pick of activities ranging from whale watching in Auke Bay Harbour to tundra trekking over Mendenhall Glacier, and even try your hand at gold panning in Last Chance Basin.

Day 10 Skagway

The tiny town of Skagway still looks like it did during the Klondike Gold Rush over 100 years ago – and today it remains an outpost for thrilling Alaskan adventure. An old-time tram ride along bustling Broadway Street reveals well-preserved buildings, including the state’s oldest hotel. You can see engraved walrus tusks at the Corrington Museum, or get lost in riveting historical reenactments around town. If outdoor adventure is more your thing, there are plenty of ways to ramp up the adrenaline, from sledding with Alaskan Huskies on Laughton Glacier to rafting on Lynn Canal, the longest fjord in North America.

Day 11 Tracy Arm Fjord

Tracy Arm Fjord extends over 30 miles alongside the wilderness of Tongass National Forest. Sailing through this deep and narrow passage delivers some of the most breathtaking scenery you’ll find in Alaska. See active glaciers carved into 7,000-foot-tall mountain peaks and plunging waterfalls burrowed into evergreen-clad cliffs. Glimpse native wildlife and watch deep blue icebergs float past the ship.

Discover the twin Sawyer Glaciers at the end of Tracy Arm Fjord. While viewing the massive face of these tidewater glaciers, spanning more than a half-mile wide, you can hear the roar and feel the rumble of huge pieces of ice calving into the water in spectacular display.

Tracy Arm Fjord is home to a spectacular array of wildlife. See pigeon guillemots, kittiwakes and arctic terns. Mountain goats graze on rocky slopes, while newborn seal pups sun on ice floes. Glimpse black bears hunting for lunch and soaring eagles— or watch for the fluke of a whale diving below.

I've Taken More Than 20 Alaska Cruises, but I've Never Been More Impressed by My Most Recent Trip — Here's Why

As Alaska works to bring its Indigenous cultures to the fore, cruise passengers can expect more engaging experiences, on land and at sea.

I was having a fangirl moment at Saxman Native Village. Master artist Nathan Jackson had put down his chisel and was taking a break from carving a totem pole to chat with me and my husband. Jackson, a member of the Chilkoot-Tlingit tribe, has been carving for more than 60 years, and today his red cedar creations are exhibited in museums around the world. Yet there we were, just outside the city of Ketchikan, getting a private audience with the man himself.

Every year, millions of people go to Alaska for the chance to watch a startlingly blue glacier shed a house-size chunk of ice, or to witness pods of humpback whales breaching. But getting to know the state through descendants of its original inhabitants has, historically, been more difficult.

I’ve taken more than 20 cruises through southeastern Alaska, navigating often thronged ports to suss out interesting adventures, such as snorkeling in the chilly Pacific or learning to make salmon chowder. I was still surprised, given how popular Alaska cruises are these days, to have an intimate chat with somebody like Jackson on a cruise excursion — particularly one from our ship, the Holland America Line Westerdam, which can accommodate nearly 2,000 guests.

But momentum is building around Alaska Native tourism . One big step came this year, when information about the state’s 229 tribes and 20 distinctive cultures appeared in a special section of Alaska’s official tourism brochure for the first time.

Another marker of progress is the inclusion of a permanent seat for an Indigenous person on the board of the Alaska Travel Industry Association, a nonprofit. Both efforts were led by Camille Ferguson, an Indigenous tourism expert and economic development director for the Sitka Tribe of Alaska.

Courtesy of Huna Totem Corporation

“I’m the one that stirred up the pot,” said Ferguson, who is Tlingit, when we met over lunch in the town of Sitka, a popular port for cruise ships. “The state did not have a connection to make sure they were doing it right, which is very essential when you are talking about cultural tourism.”

Alongside her community, Ferguson has worked to “enhance the narrative,” she explained. For example, Tribal Tours , an operator owned by the Sitka Tribe of Alaska, makes a point of developing excursions in partnership with Indigenous elders, who help shape the commentary. “I look at the forest in a different way,” Ferguson said. “You might say, ‘There’s a spruce tree.’ I look at it as the means of creating the basketry that was woven for collecting berries.”

During my visit aboard the Westerdam, I explored Sealaska Heritage , a Native institution in Juneau, accompanied by a cultural interpreter, John Lawrence. Together with a small group, we toured a re-creation of a 19th-century clan house while Lawrence marveled at the fact that schoolchildren in the state capital today take classes in Native languages. That wasn’t an option back when Lawrence was growing up, so he only knows a few words of Tlingit and Haida, the tongues of his parents.

I also had the chance to see how Sealaska Heritage has recently expanded its reach, having raised a dozen totem poles along the Juneau waterfront with funding from the Mellon Foundation. The 12 cedar artifacts, many of which stand alongside the city’s cruise port, were hewn by Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian artisans.

Cruise visitors can even learn about Native culture without leaving the ship. These days, brands including American Cruise Lines , Cunard , Holland America Line, and Lindblad Expeditions have agreements with the Indigenous-owned company Alaska Native Voices for onboard cultural seminars and performances. For its part, Holland America plans to do more cultural storytelling in 2024, working in partnership with Sealaska Heritage, says Bill Prince, the company’s vice president of entertainment.

Alaska Native people I spoke with were encouraged by the shift. “This is totem-pole country,” said Tommy Joseph, a master artist who carves and repairs totems at Sitka National Historical Park. “It’s part of our culture, and there’s a whole lot to it. A totem pole is a visual tool for telling a story: our history.”

Seven-day Alaska sailings with Holland America Line from $649 per person.

A version of this story first appeared in the December 2023/January 2024 issue of Travel + Leisure under the headline “The New Wave."

6 Top Luxury Alaska Cruises for 2024 & Beyond

C ruising to Alaska on a small luxury ship affords a very different experience than sailing through The Great Land on a larger vessel. On a smaller luxury ship, you'll enjoy the expected perks like fewer passengers and more personalized service – but you'll also physically get closer to the boundless wilderness, abundant wildlife, icy blue glaciers and majestic snow-capped mountains that you've waited a lifetime to see.

While the fares to sail on such vessels are quite a bit higher than those of larger cruise providers, the all-inclusive (or mostly all-inclusive) prices typically include all-suite accommodations with balconies, all meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi access, gratuities, welcome bottles of sparkling wine, pillow selection, some shore excursions and butler service. Best of all, you won't feel like you're being nickel-and-dimed while on board. As a special touch, the attentive crew members may even learn your name and memorize your preferred pre-dinner cocktail.

Unlike many mainstream lines, most luxury Alaska cruises do not offer pre- and post-cruise tours to extend your adventure. However, you can plan these experiences on your own through third-party providers.

Alaska Tour & Travel has pre-cruise packages that include visits to Denali National Park & Preserve and the small, quirky Alaska towns of Homer and Talkeetna. You can also see a different side of Alaska via a train ride on the Alaska Railroad, take a national parks tour that includes Kenai Fjords National Park or head northbound to Fairbanks , one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights (if you visit during aurora season, from late August to late April). In addition, the company can plan a self-drive tour from Anchorage to Seward, which includes a stay at a wilderness lodge, helicopter flightseeing over Knik Glacier and guided tours in the parks.

The following luxury cruise lines will ensure you make the most of your voyage in Alaska – one of the most magical destinations on Earth.

Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises' small luxury ships are designed for adventurers interested in visiting a mix of Alaska's top ports and more rugged, off-the-beaten-track locales. Extended itineraries offer stops in less-visited destinations like the towns of Haines and Wrangell. On board, guests can expect a personalized experience that includes luxurious ocean-view suites with butler service, multiple gourmet dining options, complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and attentive service with one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the industry.

Base fares for Silversea's 2024 and 2025 Alaska itineraries start at $3,250 per person. If you upgrade to Silversea 's door-to-door fare (which starts at $5,200 per person), you'll receive private chauffeur service from your home to the airport (and back home upon your return) and round-trip flights, with business class upgrades in some destinations.

Silversea also offers immersive pre- and post-cruise land experiences, departing from Seward, Alaska. Highlights include sightseeing flights over Denali National Park & Preserve or into bear country to see Alaska's magnificent grizzly bears. In Vancouver, travelers can take a flightseeing transfer to Victoria to tour the 55-acre Butchart Gardens or board the Rocky Mountaineer for a two-day train ride through the Canadian Rockies.

Silversea's Alaska itineraries extend from May to September, with voyages ranging between seven and 16 days. The line's newest and largest vessel, the 728-passenger Silver Nova , sails its inaugural Alaska season in 2024 along with two smaller ships, Silver Muse (596 guests) and Silver Shadow (392 guests). There are 35 Alaska voyages available in 2024. In 2025, luxury cruisers can hop aboard one of 45 scheduled voyages on either Silver Nova or the 596-guest Silver Moon .

For a seven-day itinerary, consider a sailing from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia. This voyage cruises the Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage and stops in the Alaska towns of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka and Ketchikan. Complimentary excursions in Ketchikan include a tour of Saxman Native Village; a visit to Bonfire Bay Oyster Farm, featuring a sea-to-table oyster tasting; the Alaskan Cultural, Culinary & Lumberjack show; the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafeast and a day as a fisherman aboard the Aleutian Ballard, as seen on Discovery Channel's "The Deadliest Catch." You can also opt for a Selected Shore Excursion (for an additional cost), such as mountain biking or a private fishing trip.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' elegant Seven Seas Explorer sails the line's Alaska itineraries in 2024 and 2025. The lavish 746-guest ship was coined "The Most Luxurious Ship Ever Built" when it debuted in 2016; among its impressive features are the 3,875-square-foot Regent Suite and a high-end collection of art displayed throughout the ship, including works by Pablo Picasso.

Alaska voyages with Regent in 2024 and 2025 start at $4,799 per person. Upgraded 2-for-1 all-inclusive fares (starting at $5,499 per person) cover elegant all-balcony suite accommodations; round-trip airfare (business class on international flights); a one-night pre-cruise hotel package; free two- or three-night land programs; free unlimited shore excursions; free unlimited beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic); complimentary specialty dining; and prepaid gratuities. You'll also receive complimentary airport transfers, unlimited Wi-Fi access and valet laundry service.

Every suite style includes a private balcony, roomy closets and upscale finishes. Concierge Suites (and above) add cozy in-room amenities like cashmere blankets, perfect to bundle up in while you take in the scenery. Meanwhile, Penthouse Suites (and higher) include a private butler who can book excursions, make dinner and spa reservations, unpack your luggage, arrange for a private cocktail soiree in your suite and indulge any other special requests.

Between May and September 2024, Regent sails 22 Alaska voyages. There are 16 Alaska sailings scheduled for the same period in 2025. Itineraries range from seven to 14 nights. For plenty of scenic cruising days, consider a round-trip itinerary from Vancouver departing May 28, 2025. The cruise includes five relaxing days at sea, where you'll enjoy scenic cruising through the Inside Passage (twice), Hubbard Glacier (twice) and Endicott Arm Fjord. Ports of call in Alaska include Wrangell, Juneau , Skagway, Sitka, Seward, Icy Strait (Hoonah) and Ketchikan. You'll also have a full day in Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Vancouver.

While in Wrangell, consider the Tongass Botanical Forest Walk excursion. Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the U.S., with towering old-growth trees and unique flora, fauna and ecosystems. While in the temperate rainforest with your naturalist guide, look for local wildlife like Sitka black-tailed deer, porcupines and birds of prey. Other complimentary excursions at this stop include a round of golf at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course; a canoe trip through Wrangell harbor and nearby islands, and a heritage tour about Tlingit culture and the history of the town.

Guests can attend onboard lectures and embark on Zodiac landings with the guides.

The ship features elegant staterooms and suites, a library, a spa, a hair salon and a gym. Guests will be treated to movies in the theater, wine tastings and cooking demonstrations throughout the expedition. All fine dining meals, 24-hour room service, an open bar (including an in-room minibar) and complimentary and unlimited Wi-Fi access are covered in the pricing.

Two of PONTANT's eight-night voyages from Vancouver to Sitka are in partnership with Smithsonian Journeys and are curated for English-speaking travelers. Fares for these expeditions include transfers to and from the ship and a shore excursion in each port. On board, you can attend talks and discussions hosted by two Smithsonian Journeys experts: geologist Scott Burns and natural history filmmaker John Grabowska.

On these voyages, there is a sea day after departing Vancouver. You'll cruise through the Johnstone Strait, where you'll have an excellent chance of seeing humpback whales and orcas. After a day spent in the Inside Passage, the ship will call on the village of Metlakatla, Alaska, on the western coast of Annette Island, which is home to the Tsimshians from British Columbia. Other unique Alaska ports of call in this itinerary include the commercial fishing town of Petersburg, the Tlingit village of Kake and the small fishing community of Alfin Cove.

Best Time to Cruise Alaska by Month

by The Cruise Web Team June 20, 2024

Share Facebook Twitter Google Plus Pinterest Email

Alaska, with its breathtaking glaciers, majestic mountains, and abundant wildlife, is a dream cruise destination. Towering fjords, charming coastal towns, and the chance to spot whales, bears, and eagles all make for an unforgettable adventure. But when is the absolute best time to experience Alaska by cruise ship? The answer, like most travel decisions, depends on your priorities. This guide will break down the Alaskan cruise season month by month, considering factors like weather, wildlife viewing, crowds, and, of course, price.

As you plan your Alaskan adventure, keep these key factors in mind:

  • Weather: Alaska’s summers are mild, but temperatures can vary depending on the month. Rain is always a possibility, but some months are drier than others.
  • Wildlife: Alaska boasts an incredible array of wildlife, and the best time to see specific animals can differ.
  • Crowds: Cruise traffic picks up in the summer months, leading to busier ports and potentially higher prices.
  • Price: Shoulder seasons (May–June and September) often offer the best deals on cruises.

Cruise Season in Alaska:

The Alaskan cruise season typically runs from late April to early October . This window offers a variety of experiences, depending on when you choose to set sail. Now, let’s delve into the specifics of each month!

May: Unveiling Alaska’s Springtime Beauty

May kicks off the shoulder season in Alaska, offering a compelling alternative to the peak summer months. Here’s what to expect:

  • Weather: May boasts the title of Alaska’s driest month, with a refreshing average high in the mid-50s Fahrenheit (around 13°C). Be prepared for cool evenings and mornings, but pack layers to adjust for comfortable exploration throughout the day.
  • Crowd: Compared to the hustle and bustle of June, July, and August, May offers a relaxed atmosphere onboard and ashore. With fewer crowds, you can expect shorter lines and a more intimate experience.
  • Prices: Cruise lines often entice travelers with deals during shoulder seasons, making May a budget-friendly option for those looking to save on their Alaskan adventure.
  • Activities: May is a fantastic time for wildlife enthusiasts. Witness the wonder of spring as mother bears emerge with their playful cubs, moose calves frolic alongside their parents, and a variety of newborn animals take their first steps into the world. Whales are also active during this time, with humpbacks and orcas migrating through the region.

The landscape itself comes alive in May. Vibrant wildflowers paint the Alaskan canvas, creating a breathtaking backdrop for your cruise. Take in the fresh air and witness the beauty of Alaska’s springtime awakening.

View May Alaska Cruises

June: Sunshine, Warmth, and Adventure Await

June marks the heart of the Alaskan cruise season, offering a wonderful balance between factors many travelers prioritize. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:

  • Weather: Compared to May, June sees a welcome rise in temperatures, with highs averaging in the low 60s Fahrenheit (around 16-17°C). This allows for more comfortable exploration both onboard the ship and ashore. Pack layers for the occasional cool evening, but enjoy the sunshine that defines Alaskan summers.
  • Crowd: While June experiences an increase in crowds compared to May, it’s not quite peak season yet. This translates to a more relaxed atmosphere onboard compared to July and August, with shorter wait times for activities and a less crowded feel throughout your cruise.
  • Prices: June offers a good balance between affordability and avoiding peak season crowds. You might find better deals compared to July and August, while still enjoying the benefits of the summer months.
  • Activities: June is a prime time for wildlife viewing. Witness bears still active with their playful cubs, or marvel at the impressive displays of humpback whales and orcas migrating through the region. Bald eagles are also busy raising their young during this time, providing ample opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts.

The longer daylight hours of June, compared to May, open up a wider range of outdoor activities. Hike through breathtaking Alaskan landscapes, kayak amidst majestic glaciers, or go for a scenic bike ride. With comfortable temperatures and extended daylight, June is ideal for those who want to experience the active side of Alaska.

July: Peak Season Magic Under the Midnight Sun (But Expect Crowds)

July is the undisputed peak season for Alaskan cruises. It’s a time of unparalleled beauty and adventure, but it also comes with the trade-off of larger crowds and higher prices. Here’s a closer look:

  • Weather: July boasts the warmest weather of the Alaskan cruise season, with highs averaging in the mid-60s to low 70s Fahrenheit (around 19°C). This makes it ideal for enjoying outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and glacier viewing without feeling the chill of earlier months. Pack comfortable clothing and light layers for evenings, but enjoy the sunshine that defines Alaskan summers.
  • Long Daylight Hours & Midnight Sun: One of the most captivating experiences in Alaska is witnessing the midnight sun. In July, you’ll enjoy nearly 24 hours of daylight, allowing you to maximize your time exploring and taking in the stunning scenery. Hike under the never-setting sun, embark on late-night kayaking adventures, or simply marvel at the unique phenomenon that defines the Alaskan summer solstice.
  • Activities: With warm weather and extended daylight, July is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Hike through breathtaking trails, kayak amidst majestic glaciers, or go for a thrilling whitewater rafting adventure. The long days allow you to pack in more activities and truly experience the natural beauty of Alaska.

The trade-offs:

  • Peak Season Crowds: July is the busiest month for Alaskan cruises, meaning you’ll encounter larger crowds onboard the ship and at ports of call. Be prepared for potentially longer wait times for activities and a busier overall atmosphere.
  • Highest Prices: Due to peak demand, July cruises typically come with the highest price tags of the season. If you’re on a tight budget, consider exploring shoulder season options.

View July Alaska Cruises

August: Prime Whale Watching and Alaskan Beauty (But Still Peak Season)

Following July’s peak, August in Alaska offers a very similar experience with a few key differences:

  • Weather: August maintains the warm temperatures of July, with highs averaging in the mid-60s Fahrenheit (around 19°C). This allows you to continue enjoying outdoor activities without the chill of earlier months. Pack comfortable clothes and be prepared for occasional rain showers. Compared to May, there’s a slight increase in the chance of rain in August, so bringing a light rain jacket is recommended.
  • Crowd: August is still considered peak season, so expect crowds like July . This translates to a busier atmosphere onboard and ashore, with potentially longer wait times for activities and excursions.
  • Prices: Peak season prices remain in effect during August. If you’re on a budget, consider exploring shoulder months like May or September for potentially better deals.
  • Activities: August is a prime time for spotting humpback whales in Alaska. These magnificent creatures are actively feeding in preparation for their migration south. Keep your eyes peeled for impressive breaches and playful displays as you cruise through the Alaskan waters.

The warm weather and long daylight hours of August allow you to continue enjoying a variety of outdoor activities. Hike through breathtaking landscapes, kayak amidst majestic glaciers, or go for a scenic bike ride. With comfortable temperatures and extended daylight, August offers the perfect opportunity to experience the active side of Alaska.

September: Witness Fall Foliage and Wildlife Spectacles (with Fewer Crowds)

September ushers in the shoulder season in Alaska, offering a delightful alternative to the peak summer months. Here’s why September might be the perfect time for your Alaskan cruise adventure:

  • Weather: September brings a noticeable drop in temperatures compared to July and August. Expect highs averaging in the low 50s Fahrenheit (around 10°C). Pack layers for cooler evenings and mornings, but you’ll still enjoy comfortable temperatures during the day.
  • Shorter Daylight Hours: Daylight hours begin to decrease in September. While there’s still ample time for exploration, it’s not quite the extended daylight of the peak summer months. Plan your itinerary accordingly to maximize your time enjoying the outdoors.
  • Fewer Crowds: Compared to July and August, September experiences a significant decrease in crowds. This translates to shorter lines onboard, a more relaxed atmosphere, and potentially more availability for desired shore excursions.
  • Lower Prices: As the peak season subsides, cruise lines often offer more attractive pricing in September. This makes it a budget-friendly option for those looking for a good value on their Alaskan adventure.
  • Activities: September boasts unique experiences not found in the peak summer months:
  • Fall Foliage: Witness the breathtaking transformation of Alaska’s landscape. The vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow create a magical backdrop for your cruise, offering stunning scenery unlike any other time of year.
  • Wildlife Viewing: September offers a chance to witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of salmon runs. These magnificent fish fight their way upstream in a determined effort to spawn, creating an unforgettable natural phenomenon. You might also spot caribou herds migrating south for the winter, adding to the diverse wildlife encounters possible in September.

View September Alaska Cruises

October: Witness the Aurora Borealis (But Bundle Up and Be Flexible)

Early October marks the final stretch of the Alaskan cruise season, offering a truly unique experience for the adventurous traveler. Here’s what to expect:

  • Weather: October is the coldest month for Alaskan cruises, with highs averaging in the mid-40s Fahrenheit (around 7°C). Pack warm clothes, including a hat, gloves, scarf, and a thick jacket for chilly weather throughout the day. Be prepared for even colder temperatures at night, especially when viewing the aurora borealis.
  • Longer Nights: As October progresses, the nights become significantly longer. This translates to a shorter window for daytime exploration but creates the perfect conditions for witnessing the spectacular aurora borealis (northern lights). Imagine cruising under a sky ablaze with dancing colors – a truly unforgettable sight.
  • Very Few Crowds: October cruises boast the smallest crowds of the year. This translates to an incredibly peaceful and intimate experience onboard and ashore. Enjoy shorter lines, a relaxed atmosphere, and the feeling of having Alaska almost to yourself.
  • Prices: Cruise lines offer their most enticing deals in October, making it the most budget-friendly option of the season. This is a great opportunity to snag a fantastic Alaskan cruise experience at a fraction of the peak season price.
  • Limited Shore Excursions: Due to the winding down of the tourist season, many shore excursions and tours may no longer be operational. Be sure to check with your cruise line well in advance to see what activities are available during your specific sailing. While options might be limited, some operators may still offer unique experiences tailored to the fall season, such as wildlife viewing focused on fall migrations.

October is a month for the adaptable adventurer. While shore excursions might be limited, the chance to witness the aurora borealis and experience Alaska with minimal crowds makes it a truly special time to visit.

View October Alaska Cruises

Alaska: Cruise Matchmaker

As you’ve seen, there’s no single “best” month for an Alaskan cruise. The ideal time depends on your priorities:

  • For value and fewer crowds: May and September offer shoulder season savings and a relaxed atmosphere.
  • For warm weather and long days: June and July boast sunshine, comfortable temperatures, and the chance to experience the midnight sun. However, expect peak season crowds and prices.
  • For wildlife viewing: Each month offers unique opportunities. See newborn animals in May, humpback whales in August, or salmon runs and migrating caribou in September.
  • For a chance to witness the aurora borealis: Take an October cruise but be prepared for colder temperatures and limited options.
