Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour Shoe Review

Nike air zoom infinity tour shoe.

New tech, innovative designs, state of the art materials, and generally trend setting are all synonymous with Nike Golf .  While I’m not saying everything they do is great or is everyone’s cup of tea, you can’t deny that they aren’t all of those things.  Whether it’s high-performing shoes for their Tour players, or classic sneaker-based shoes like Jordans and Air Max models, Nike Golf keeps cranking out hits.  Their latest is the running shoe-inspired Air Zoom Infinity Tour as worn by Brooks Koepka. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the release of this shoe was slightly delayed, but they’ve officially landed and golfers wasted no time scooping up their pairs.

The Air Zoom Infinity Tour borrows a lot of technology utilized by Nike in other sports.  I’ll link to more information around that at the end.

Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour 5

Nike released the Air Zoom Infinity Tour in three different colorways at initial launch.  There are pretty basic all white and black options, but the clear star of the group is the white/black/flash crimson/volt colorway pictured here.  The higher tongue and Achilles are somewhat different looking, but don’t look awkward once on foot.

Clearly the Air Zoom Infinity Tour looks like a running shoe, but that’s no accident.  The whole shoe was based on a simple request from Brooks Koepka in 2017 – “make me a running shoe I can golf in.”  I’d say mission accomplished in the looks department.  I still think they look sick in this colorway and will be a regular in my summer golf rotation.

Comfort 13

Comfort Level

If you’re expecting a super pillowy and soft pair of shoes, the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour isn’t exactly that.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s very comfortable, but it feels more like a purpose-driven performance golf shoe that will hold up over 18 holes.  Not a bed of clouds.  The waterproof Flyknit upper is lightweight, but also snug around your foot for great support.  Though the tongue and Achilles look high, the upper is actually more of a lower profile.  While the shoe is fairly snug around your foot, it’s true to size in length.  I usually wear an 11 US “medium” and the Air Zoom Infinity Tour felt more narrow than usual, but it wasn’t uncomfortable or unwearable due the softer upper.

Air Infinity Tour 7

On-Course Performance

The Air Zoom Infinity Tour’s new traction system was the first thing that caught my eye.  Sure, Nike has used innovative sole and spike designs in the past, but the transparent sole with a wild traction pattern is an attention grabber.  Rather than explain it myself, I’ll just lift this straight from Nike:

The source of a golfer’s kinetic energy comes from the feet, and every time a golfer swings, they lose some of that energy. This is where Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour steps in, re-harvesting and redistributing some of that lost energy.  Analyzing data from pressure maps, Nike designers looked at where traction elements need to be positioned on the shoe for an ultimate return on movement. Developing a holistic system that transfers more power up the kinetic chain, Nike obsessed the areas of fit (to reduce in-shoe movement), ride (for maximum energy retention) and traction (for zero slip in any direction).

Admittedly, I didn’t get on a Trackman or use any other tech to really measure this.  Surprisingly, I just don’t have access to the same tech Nike does.  What I can say is that the Air Zoom Infinity Tour has a tremendous blend of traction, mobility, and feedback during the golf swing.  The traction pattern on the sole creates the right grip that allows for natural mobility throughout the swing without losing control.  The REACT midsole and “Zoom Air Strobel” (the layer between the midsole and the upper) also contribute to excellent ground feedback that’s as good as any golf shoe I’ve worn.

Air Infinity Tour 6

Final Thoughts – Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour

I totally understand that the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour might not be the golf shoe for everyone.  That said, you can’t deny that it’s an impressive combination of tried and true Nike technologies that flat out work.  I found them to be comfortable over 18 holes and they were an absolute performer as a piece of golf equipment.  It will be interesting to see if the Air Zoom Infinity Tour creates a new standard for Nike Golf footwear moving forward and where they go from here.

Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT% Performance Review

air zoom infinity tour golf shoes review

Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT%

The Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT% is a massive step forward in the right direction for Nike Golf. It gets us excited for what may come next.

Colorway: Sail/Pearl White/Black/Washed Teal

Release Date: May 1, 2022

Price: $160

Nike’s latest tour offering just hit the shelves; how does it stack up against the previous iteration? The Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT% aims to replace and build upon the success of its predecessor, the Zoom Infinity Tour .

As someone who also owns the Zoom Infinity Tour, I have some gripes that I’m hoping that Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT% improves upon when compared to its older brother. But the question remains, is it worth the upgrade, or are you better off buying last year’s version at a discount?

Let’s find out.

The Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT% is Nike's newest Tour spiked golf shoe.

First Impressions

The Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT% is, in my opinion, one of Nike’s best-looking offerings to date. They’re sleek, sexy, athletic, and bold.

I love a visible air unit, especially on a golf shoe, so that’s what caught my eye right at the start. The Infinity Tour NXT% is one of those shoes you wouldn’t know is a golf shoe unless you looked at it from the sole up. To me, the shoe looks like a running shoe or at least gives off that vibe.

Nonetheless, golf apparel is quickly becoming more tapered, athletic, and sleek when compared to the past, so I think the Infinity Tour NXT is perfect for the modern era of golf.

The materials on my pair of Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT% are nothing short of stellar. The mesh upper is light and breathable, while the leather overlays and swoosh take things up a notch.

It might sound weird, but the heel is my favorite part. This pair (the special colorway that Nike released for The Masters) features some amazingly lush long hair suede on the heel, a touch that you shouldn’t overlook. It looks sweet and feels fantastic.

Most TOUR-worthy golf shoes feature some premium materials, so this was a must. I felt that they mixed the textiles and premium materials in a way that added to the overall package and design of the shoe.

The traction pattern on the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT%.

Like the original Air Zoom Infinity Tour, the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT% features a spiked sole with four massive spikes to keep you grounded. The TPU spikes offered plenty of traction and grab, and the accompanying ridges and nubs provided more traction in critical areas to help reduce slipping.

Spiked traction like this is good because it really digs into the ground when applying force. Think of it like a pair of cleats; there’s a reason that all sports played on grass/turf use some sort of cleat or spike. The ground is unpredictable, and traction like this counteracts it and keeps you upright.

I didn’t notice any slippage while playing in these, which I expected. Spiked offerings such as this should, at minimum, stop you from slipping. Even when I got myself into some sticky situations on the course, I found myself completely confident in the traction of the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT%.

My favorite part of the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT% is the cushion. Last year’s pair featured a React midsole and Zoom strobel, yet I found them rather uninspiring and stiff. I was glad to see that Nike listened to golfers like me and retooled the setup to make these mad comfy. They removed the Zoom strobel but beefed up the React midsole and added the two visible air units in the forefoot.

The React midsole is incredible. I’m a big fan of React, so I was not disappointed. When I say all-day comfort, I mean it. Generally, when I’m out on the course, I may switch shoes a time or two to continue to test other kicks, but not when I had these on. I couldn’t take them off. They were that good. I found these much more comfortable than last year’s pair, despite the change in cushion setup.

As if you needed more cushion, the two forefoot Zoom Air units provided good responsiveness and helped with energy and weight transfer through the swing. Explosive moves (at the transition from backswing to downswing) felt energized and lively.

Seriously, these things were so comfortable.

One of my biggest gripes with last year’s model was stability; the shoe felt so narrow that I struggled to stay in balance at times. Nike solved that in the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT%. A wider base and the slightly improved traction gave me the confidence to swing away without falling off balance.

My other issue with last year’s iteration of the shoe was fit. The original Infinity Tour fit narrow, really tight, and pretty short. Again, Nike listened to golfers and made sure to address that for the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT%. They fit much better in pretty much every way.

The overall fit is wider, less restricting, and more true to size than before. I would have gone up at least a half size in last year’s model. In these, I’m much more inclined to order my proper size.

Wide-footers who missed out on last year’s pair due to the fit will have no issues playing in these.

air zoom infinity tour golf shoes review

Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT% Summary

Everything that people (me included) didn’t like about the original Air Zoom Infinity Tour, Nike fixed for the Air Zoom Infinity Tour NXT%. There’s no doubt in my mind this is going to be a fan favorite moving forward.

Now, let’s revisit my question on whether you should buy the Infinity Tour NXT% or the original Infinity Tour at a discount. New version all the way. You’re going to want to experience the upgrades from this new pair.

Gone are the days (hopefully for good) of Nike Golf shoes fitting too narrow and lacking top-of-the-line cushion. The Infinity Tour NXT% is a massive step in the right direction for Nike and, admittedly, my current favorite pair of golf shoes.

Just bought these and then read this review, super hyped to play in them

It might be how tightly you have them tied, but that tongue situation is atrocious. No way I could look down at that while playing.

I usually order athletic shoes in size 14, but my infinity react running shoes are a bit too big and the 13 is just right. I assumed the same sizing for these, but that’s not quite right. The 13 is a tiny bit tight, but I’d say a good snug.

As said above, very comfy ride. Great cushioning and felt stable. Played in dry conditions. Did slip pretty bad on my first drive of the day, but no issues with traction after that. Probably just a bad swing. From time to time I was feeling a little pinch on the front left of my ankle, seemingly where the lace holder was, but not too bad. No issues with heel slip or blistering

Wiped clean afterward super easily and absolutely zero build up on the bottom. That was impressive.

I also have some code chaos. It’s a very close call between the two. I’d probably give a very slight edge to code chaos in total comfort, but a pretty large edge to the nikes for looks. I’ve got a lot of shoes and I’d definitely put these both at the top for walking.

I have the crimson/volts, played my first 18 yesterday.

The other shoe I bought this year was the Tour360 Primeknits which are super comfortable. I would say comfort is about the same, maybe slight edge to the ZITs only because the toe box is snug and keeps your foot down and in place like a running shoe. If you have even a SLIGHTLY wide foot, I would recommend getting the wide version. I have average feet, normall size 10.5 or 11. I got these in 10.5 and they are snug, but not too snug. It was very unique feeling my foot almost being pushed down from the extra padding in the top foot/toe area but I like it. No traction issues whatsoever either.

The part that I am HOPING to be the best part is the coating on the shoe. It has the fit/feeling of a Primeknit/Flyknit but there is a coating on it, assuming for waterproofing. The Tour360 Primeknits DO NOT have this. After 9 holes in dry conditions, my Tour360's already had dust in the fabric and it wont come off unless I throw them in the wash. I didnt even walk on dirt/mud, its just with pollen and dust in the air they are turning brown already. I assume this is not going to happen with the coating that is on the ZITs and that makes them a much better buy.

I like golf. A lot.

Dustyc96

I really want to try these, didnt realize how fast they would sell out on nikes site, I kept second guessing myself. I love the athletic look of the shoe more than anything. Hows the sizing on these? I typically wear a 10 in most nikes, but my very old nike lunarlon 2's I wear a 9.5, with a very snug fit. Does the flyknit stretch a fair amount to accommodate a snug fit. And my biggest question which only time will tell, how does the flyknit hold up in muddy conditions, does it get dirty or is it easy to clean.

Do you run? Running shoes tend to "hug" your foot a little more. I have a pair of Nike Free's and Adidas Ultraboost 20s and they fit exactly like both of these. Snug, yes...but not uncomfortably snug for an average width foot. The flyknit doesnt stretch too much, maybe a little give.

Someone said in the other Nike Footwear thread that they played 18 holes and it was a bit wet/muddy and it wiped right off and they were good as new again. Now wearing them myself, I find that very hard to believe. Yes the flyknit has a coating over it like I previously stated, but I can see it discoloring/staining after multiple rounds in wet condition.

Whenever they became available again to order I'm going to try and snag a 9.5 and 10, I have about a half size between my feet. I like snug, just not overly snug.

Thats unfortunate to hear about the cleanliness but I really don’t know what I expected. Maybe applying a water repellent spray would help preserve the whiteness. I'm just personally not a fan of black golf shoes

SikhGolfer

These should be back, right? This wasn't a limited release to my knowledge...

OP -- Did you get the wides? Looks like a lot of extra/overlapping material in the upper, especially under the laces.

GC70

I definitely need to try these out.

I got these shoes when they dropped from Nike last week...wore them for the 1st time out. Initially fit very snug, almost too tight. I always buy the same size in Nike, but after wearing for a few hours, they felt better. The comfort is great and they look awesome. However, the traction is terrible. I completely slipped on my 2nd tee shot and my leg flew out where I stumbled and nearly fell over. I'm not sold on the disc spike thingy. I only wear spikeless and never slipped with any other shoes, even in wet conditions. Too bad I can't return them since I already wore them.

Need to grab these. I was hesitant without trying them on. Usually a standard 12, but my air max 1 golf shoes I went 11.5. jordan ADG’s I went 12, so I was scared to order online.

good call with ordering 2 sizes. May try that out because I love the look of these.

I walked 18 yesterday and rode in the cart for 18 today.

This morning is was dewy and they had sprinklers out in front of us most holes. They shoes are NOT discoloring or getting super wet like my Tour360 Primeknits. So big plus there.

One huge negative and I would really love the input of other ZIT owners, near the heel where the big cushion is on the INSIDE of the shoe, the cushion like...stops part way down the shoe, almost leaving a plastic-like exposed portion. This portion rubs on the inside of my left heel which makes sense since they are so snug. I have actually developed a very minor blister after the last 2 days but only on my left foot. I dont know if its a defect in the specific ones I was shipped or if it is the way I walk, but its definitely there and happening.

shaneyank

Can anyone compare the sizing of the Tour Premier vs. the Zoom Infinity Tour?

I hear the word "snug" used for both and I'm just wondering if anyone has first hand experience going from the TP to the ZIT.

third-times-a-charm

third-times-a-charm

Some are saying TTS and some go half size up. Its a crapshoot

AI TD MAX     10.5 °   +   UB 6   /  AI MAX   16.5 ° +  21 ° +  24 °   +   UB 6+7+8   / FRGD TEC 5-G  + MODUS 115  / JWS RW  + MODUS 120   / '14   NWPT 2 + GPS

I wear an 11.5 in TPs and an 11 (my typical Nike size) in ZITs. The TP 11 was smaller than the 11 ZIT but marginally.

I would say all in all ZIT length is very similar to TPs and there is less give (after 36 holes) in the coated FK than I would have expected. From small to TTS I would go AJ11, TP, ZIT.

Therealpatgiles

Definitely match your tp size with the zit IMO. React vapor 2 in 9.5 is my perfect size. 9.5 lcv2 was too tight. 10 was big. 10 tour premiere is awesome as well. The zit in 9.5 left a blister on my pinky toes, and I do not have wide feet.

+1 to matching TP size. The TP run smaller than the ZiT, but it’s worth sizing up.

snagy2000

Same here. I have never gotten blisters on my feet by any shoe except from the ZIT. I went up half size, don't have a wide foot, and they just wouldn't break in. Must be the flynit coating they're using. Who knows, sent them back.

I posted in the '20 Nike Shoes thread that this happened to a buddy of mine with his ZITs. Compared to my LC4s, the ZITs' collars are so high that I know they'd be into my ankles, too. Personally, I'm not willing to deal with that (I'm not willing to purchase them without trying them on first, at least). There seems to be no good reason for the material to come up that high on these/any shoes.

Thanks @nickerson , @Therealpatgiles and @toothysaw2 . I wear 11.5 in the TP and it is very snug when new. They stretch just enough to make them a perfect fit after a few rounds walking. Since stores remain closed here in NorCal, I bought the ZIT in both 11.0 and 11.5. I expect one of them to work based on your feedback.

I just received my ZIT today and i ordered size 10 wide fit (i usually wear 9.5)

It's wide fit but it still feels kinda tight to me

Does it stretch a little or is it just same?

If it doesnt stretch, ill probably return it

edryer3

Walked 18 in my ZITs and I’ve got a blister near the crease bend would be, where my big toe is on top. Never had that happen with any Nike golf shoes. They are super comfortable other than that. I’m wondering if my sock bunched a bit while walking. Anyone else have a pinch point Issue on your right foot by the big toe? I’ll give it some more time but if it continues I will return them which is unfortunate!

Such was the performance of the Air Zoom Victory Tour 3 and Air Zoom Infinity Tour Next% 2 that they actually feature amongst the best spiked golf shoes on the market, whilst the Pegasus '89 will appeal to the  sneaker golf shoe fans, with the aesthetic one of our favorites!

According to reports, the footwear will go on sale on Tuesday 11th July at 10am EST, with the main event, the US Open, getting underway on Thursday 13th June. Coming into the tournament, Wyndham Clark defends following his one shot victory over McIlroy at Los Angeles Country Club.

Nike Air Zoom Victory Tour 3 Golf Shoes Review

With the subtle improvements to the previous Victory 2, the new 3 is one of the best golf shoes on the market. In every department the performance is excellent - comfort, grip, protection, looks - Nike has absolutely nailed it here.

  • Outstanding comfort and feel
  • Total performance
  • Look absolutely fantastic
  • Laces feel a touch cheap

Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NEXT% Shoes Review

An outstanding shoe with Tour-proven performance, the NEXT% from Nike looks great, felt very comfortable throughout testing, and they deliver in just about every way you would want from  top of the range golf shoes.

  • Extremely comfortable
  • Sporty and modern look
  • Lots of sizes and colors
  • A little tricky to clean

There is a reason Nike is one of the most popular brands in golf and sponsors some of the biggest names. From Nike shoes to apparel, they always bring out some top quality equipment that is used by the likes of Rory McIlroy , Brooks Koepka , Scottie Scheffler and Nelly Korda.

Nike, time and time again, have shown themselves to be one of the best brands, not only in golf, but across multiple sports and for everyday life too and, in this piece, we will be focusing on the Nike Air Zoom Victory Tour 3 and Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NEXT% shoes, used by McIlroy and Koepka respectively, to see which is best.

Both are great in their own right but, when it comes to deciding which is right for you, it can be a difficult decision, that is why we are here to go through what makes these shoes great in this head-to-head.

Starting with the shoes worn by McIlroy, the Nike Air Zoom Victory Tour 3s build on the success of the Victory Tour 2s. The new design looks different in several subtle ways and the new full-grain leather upper has a supple feel and sophisticated look.

Along with the upper, the swoosh and midsole sections look slightly different and, overall, we think the shoe seems more refined. It looks like more of a traditionally sporty golf shoe that will suit a wide range of ages, whereas the previous model was perhaps better suited to younger audiences.

What's more, we were also fans of the colorways, in particular the the fade of the shoe from blue to green that we tested, which we felt looked excellent. If it isn't to your tastes, there are other colors to choose from.

Moving onto the Infinity Tour NEXT%, which offers a sporty and modern aesthetic that has more of a sneaker-style look than a traditional golf shoe, which we liked. The black and white colorway we tested still maintains that kind of understated finish which makes it usable at most golf courses, but with a nice pop of turquoise color on the inside and on the swoosh underneath the shoe to add a little flair..

There are loads of other colors to choose from, which is great, and there are even special edition designs available to buy, such as the  yellow pair Brooks Koepka was wearing at The Masters.

This is one of the most important aspects when it comes to choosing a golf shoe. You are going to be spending hours at a time in them, shifting your feet and walking miles. If you do not get the right fit and comfort then you are going to destroy your feet.

In testing, we felt that the Nike Victory Tour 3 are one of the  most comfortable shoes  we have tested. The previous 2 was right up there in this regard but, for us, the 3 has taken it to a whole new level. This is thanks to elements like the extra thickness of padding around the ankle, which felt soft and comfortable.

Additionally, Nike has added an internal strap on the inside of the shoe which contours to your foot. This is different to its predecessor, with the change only elevating the quality of this footwear. What was a particular standout is that, out of the box, they didn't require much wearing-in before tackling the course and Nike have also stitched a Zoom Air unit directly to the upper which delivered an exceptional feel. The last point to mention is that the foam towards the heel felt very cushiony, almost bouncy when walking on the course.

Moving on to the Infinity Tour NEXT% and, straight out of the box, they feel outstandingly well made. Every part of the shoe feels premium, sturdy and well put together. This continued when we got them on the golf course, as these were some of the most comfortable golf shoes we have tested.

The material on the inside feels soft around and on top of the foot, and we liked the extra bit of padding around the ankle. To put it simply, walking in these shoes was effortless and comfortable.

A final point worth noting is that the shoe also has two Air Zoom units which are not fully enclosed. Nike claims they give better energy return when pushing through the swing and to aid every step but, we must admit, that it was hard to gauge the impact of these. Importantly, though, they did feel good after a long day of testing, so the technology must have been doing something right.

With both these amazing Nike shoes performing excellently so far, how do they perform on the course? Currently, there isn't much to separate these two shoes, so maybe performance will.

Well, firstly, the grip and stability of the Victory Tour 3 shoes was top-notch. The shoes have a new seven-way cleat system with two different types of spikes and the new Softspikes Tour Flex Pro is fitted in three forefoot areas. Along with the cleat system, there are Silver tornado spikes in the heel and other side of the forefoot area. The result of this? Well, we tested these shoes in different conditions and the traction remained very good. During one round we played on a variety of ground conditions, which included brown, burnt-out ground, softer ground thanks to a deluge of rain and a variety of different lies and stances. Each time, the grip and stability were never compromised.

nike air zoom victory tour 3

As for the Infinity Tour NEXT% shoes, they are breathable and lightweight so walking 36 holes was a breeze and, despite the lightness, we didn’t feel like grip or stability was reduced. The four spikes are large enough to manage traction throughout the swing, although we do think the outsole itself could offer more traction points. That being said, we tested the shoes from a variety of stances and conditions, because of the changing weather, and they responded well, but the Victory Tour 3 does edge it slightly here.

Waterproofing is a really important feature for a golf shoe so that is where we finish our head-to-head with these two shoes. There can be times when you rely on the fact that the manufacturer tells you that the shoes are waterproof but, in some instances, that can be false and you find your feet getting drenched.

Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour NEXT% Shoes Review

We can confirm though that both of these shoes from Nike are fully waterproof and that there was no leaking from either. Certainly, both rank highly on our best waterproof golf shoes  list and, ultimately, it will come down what material you prefer your golf shoes to be made up of.

Choose the Nike Air Zoom Victory Tour 3 if… - You want a shoe that gives elite-level performance - You want to wear the shoes Rory McIlroy wears - You want arguably the most comfortable shoe on the market

Choose the Infinity Tour NEXT% if... - You want a shoe that has a sporty modern look - You want to wear the shoes Brooks Koepka wears - You want a really grippy and high-performing shoe

Iridescence is over done

Lloyd - May 19, 2024

The sizing was perfect. But the iridescent elements of the shoes are muted in the pictures. When you get the shoes, it is very noticeable and probably not something I would have selected. ...

Awesome!!!!!

Derek R - May 04, 2024

The picture does not do it justice, they look twice as good when you open that box. Very comfortable and run true to size in my opinion. These are my 1st shoes with spikes (Coming from the Jordan 1) and I love them! Hoping that a black colorway is released also so I can grab those too. Unfortunately they do not help your game...still shot a 59 on the Front 9 LOL....extremely happy with this purchase! ...

Best golf shoes I’ve ever bought

Dynamic Response

A forefoot Air Zoom unit responds to every step. Because it's not fully enclosed, the Air unit can move with your foot, allowing for better energy return when you push off through your swing.

Breathable Comfort

Breathable textile helps your foot stay cool. The material hugs and supports you through every step for extra support and comfort. A plush, padded collar helps reduce heel slip while you move.

Optimal Grip

A supportive plate with six integrated spikes and a data-informed traction pattern give you exceptional grip. We placed the spikes under the Air Zoom unit for better energy return and added comfort throughout your round.

More Benefits

  • Gusset on the tongue makes it easier to take your shoes on and off while also adding extra side-to-side support.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
