With plenty of gorgeous views and history lessons along the way, it’s as fulfilling as it is tasty, this day will take you through some of the region’s most esteemed estates.

With a small group, it’s a very intimate experience that really allows you to learn comfortably and explore these charming settings in the way they were meant to be.
What Makes This Tour Great
First off, any tour that comes with a hotel pickup is going to instantly earn some points from me. Our driver/guide was super friendly, professional, and prompt, sharing plenty of stories about the history of the region as we cruised along in our comfortable coach.
The views were dramatic and gorgeous, lending many opportunities for great photos and videos throughout our journey. We went to 2 different esteemed wineries, which were filled with around 14 different wine tastings as well as cheeses and chocolates.
The lunch we had at the restaurant we visited was also amazing, and didn’t cost any extra! They even taught us how to correctly pair reds and whites with food, which I made mental notes of for the next time I’m entertaining guests!
Overall, it was a fantastic day with amazing people, traveling through breathtaking scenery to learn and taste some of the best wine and food I’ve ever had.

With private transportation and small groups, you’ll become fully immersed in the experience, complete with commentary from your expert guide along the way.
Learn about the region’s rich winemaking traditions and unique characteristics of each estate’s offerings, along with selected tastings to showcase the varied flavors and craftsmanship behind each bottle.
By the time you’re done, you’ll not only know much more about wine, but about the local history, farming background, and so much more. Expect to taste some amazing cheeses, chocolates, and lunch, too!
This tour had everything covered, from top-notch local cuisine, to history lessons, to wine tastings! Our guide did a fabulous job sharing interesting facts and stories about the region and South America, overall, tying wine culture in along the way.
One of the highlights of this tour for me was the wine and chocolate tasting at Waterford which is a gorgeous location, as well as a delicious lunch at a charming little lunch spot.
While it may not be the norm, our guide was so close with the owners and staff throughout this tour, that we even got to go on a private tour of the cellar and wine processing area of one of the estates with the owner, himself!
3. Stellenbosch Four Estate Full-Day Wine Tour From Cape Town
- Start Time(s) : 8:00 AM
- What’s Included : Wine tour and tasting, g uide, v isits to 4 estates, l unch, t asting of local cheese, cured meats and chocolate
First off, this is one of the most convenient tours with a hotel pickup right from our lobby! We cruised out to Stellenbosch to explore one of the oldest towns in the entire country!
The Cape Dutch-style architecture was very interesting to me, and our guide taught us how it all tied back into wine. They do a great job of taking you to both the more commercial estates as well as more quaint, family-run farms.
We went on a cellar tour, and enjoyed various wine tastings complete with professional wine, chocolate, and cured meat pairings.
If you’re a wine aficionado and want to learn even more, this is the tour for you. It focuses heavily on the different wine tasting notes, the history behind each one, and wine culture in South Africa, in general.
Being able to visit an impressive 4 wineries (all top-notch) – specifically our first stop which was Mitre’s Edge – was truly magical. We were received like it was our own home almost, where they presented us with perfectly-paired cheeses and wine.
The South African barbecue meat was also delicious and very fresh, so make sure you come hungry! While the staff members were incredibly friendly and welcoming, our guide made it that much more special by sharing his vast knowledge and being incredibly cordial throughout the tour.
Our group had a mere 7 people in it, which made it feel like we were a little friend group and was easy to make friends with everyone. While the tour of the town is quite brief, it gives you some nice background knowledge and allows you to focus more on each winery experience.
4. Private Wine Tour with Wine Expert to Stellenbosch-Franschhoek Wine Regions
- What’s Included : Visit four wineries, with a wine expert, private, guide-driven vehicle bottled water, alcoholic beverages, tasting fees are included
Embark on a wonderful journey through South Africa’s fairytale-like wine regions with a private tour that melds personalized indulgence with expert guidance.
Traverse the picturesque landscapes of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, renowned for their world-class wines, while a knowledgeable wine expert leads you through 4 renowned wineries.
Each stop offers a curated tasting experience, allowing you to taste the unique flavors and craftsmanship of South Africa’s celebrated wine industry.
This private tour is designed to cater to your specific preferences, offering the flexibility to customize your itinerary based on your wine interests or leave it to your guide to showcase the region’s hidden gems.
Enjoy the luxury of traveling in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable experience from start to finish. With all wine-tasting fees included, you will fully immerse yourself in the rich culture of South African wine without any added hassle.
Me and my group had been considering driving out to this region on our own, but then we thought that driving probably wouldn’t be the best option if we’re going on a wine tasting.
I’m so glad (for many reasons) that we instead chose this private wine tour with our wine expert leading the way. We visited 4 different wineries that our guide helped to select for us, based on our specific interests and wine preferences.
Our guide also did a great job driving us safely around, and it was nice that they gave us the option to completely customize on our own, or let him choose for us. We also stopped for a wonderful lunch with beautiful views, before heading to the last winery tasting.
5. Stellenbosch: Half-Day Wine Tour
- Tour Length : 5 hours
- What’s Included : Transportation by air-conditioned minivan, l ocal driver/guide, w ine tasting paired with cheese, w ine tasting paired with Biltong
For being the shortest tour on this guide, it sure does pack in a lot of amazing experiences. The Stellenbosch: Half-Day Wine Tour can be taken either in the morning or afternoon, but both will take you on a trip to try its exceptional wines and soak in its scenic beauty.
If you’re planning on taking the entire family, I can’t recommend this one enough, as they even have a “kids” tasting option that includes not-so-bitter cheeses, a sweet, and either juice or lemonade.
Learn about wine production on a cellar tour, check out vineyards, try premium wines, and even a bit of the South African cured, dry meat called Biltong! It’s a great opportunity for you all to see the charming town of Stellenbosch, which looks like something out of a fairytale!
As one of the oldest towns in the country, you’ll have plenty of time to stroll around and check out the old architecture, boutique shops, and much more.
This is one of the most unique, versatile tours of its kind, despite being shorter than the others. I loved how convenient it was, starting with the option to take either the morning or afternoon, as well as the comfortable ride out to Stellenbosch.
It’s a great way to see this area with the entire family, as well as enjoy a fun experience with the delicious Biltong cured meat snacks and all kinds of cheeses (even vegan options!).
The wine tastings were incredible, with one of the owners even there to conduct a tasting at one of the estates! Our guide was fantastic, going above and beyond to ensure all of us had a great time and had all of our questions answered.
6. African Story Wine Tours in the Cape Winelands
- Start Time(s) : 8:30 AM
- What’s Included : Four expert-led wine tastings, lunch, roundtrip transportation, air-conditioned minivan, bottled water
If you’re looking for a relaxing escape from the bustling city, look no further than the African Story Wine Tours in the Cape Winelands! This tour will take you on an all-encompassing journey right into the heart of the Paarl, Franschhoek, and Stellenbosch areas lined with endless vineyards.
Visiting 4 distinguished wineries, you’ll learn about a wide array of different wine, as well as gain insight into the variety within South African winemaking.
You’ll not only get to try some of the best reds and whites in the country – but you’ll also get to sample rich port brandy and crisp sparkling wines! Enjoy a delicious a la carte lunch at a local restaurant, paired seamlessly with fine wines that highlight the region’s gastronomic diversity.
Try local specialties throughout the tour, including artisanal cheeses, gourmet chocolates, and other rich snacks.
Wow – this tour is the perfect option whether you want to help design a personalized tour with your guide, or trust their expertise to create one for you.
This small-group setting allows for an intimate and engaging exploration of South Africa’s charming wine scene, complete with hassle-free hotel pickup in a comfortable vehicle.
I’m a huge fan of charcuterie boards and chocolates, and the dishes we had with our wine was right up my alley (definitely try the olives!).
If you are worried that wine tasting could be pretentious, this tour will show you that it’s far from it! One of my favorite parts of the tour was seeing an ostrich at one of the wineries, before trying some of their homemade cheeses. Everything was so delicious, our group was great, and everyone was so friendly!
7. Cape Town Wine Tour & Tasting All Inclusive
- What’s Included : Private tour with commentary, Bottled water, 5 vineyards to visit, driver and guide, all tastings
Indulge in a completely customized journey through South Africa’s famed wine lands on the Cape Town Wine Tour & Tasting All Inclusive experience, perfect for wine aficionados and complete newbies.
Whether you’re partial to reds, crisp whites, or even sparkling wines, you’ll find something unique and delicious here. Again, this is all about your preferences, with your expert guide there to make recommendations around them, should you like.
Taste some of the best wines in the country, learn about the intricate methods of wine production, and enjoy the manmade and natural beauty surrounding this region.
With convenient hotel pickup and drop-off, it’s convenient and luxurious, allowing you to kick back and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
This tour was a ton of fun, with a great selection of wineries, and an amazing tour guide who took into consideration our likes and dislikes, throughout.
While it was loosely based around a schedule, our guide was very flexible with time and let us stay more or less, depending on our interest level.
Our first stop was at Spier Wine Farm, where we had a wine tasting in their beautiful tasting room, along with a food platter to pick on while looking out over breathtaking mountain and dam views.
We visited 5 different wineries, and each one had something special to offer – all with amazing natural vistas! We learned about their different production methods, as well as their specific traditions, identifying the flavor changes in each winery.

This day tour includes a cellar tour and 3 paired wine tastings, one each in the Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl regions. Enjoy a guided walk in Stellenbosch, and a visit to Franschhoek village.
Stellenbosch Wine Tour
After leaving Cape Town we head close to Stellenbosch to enjoy a cellar tour followed by a Cheese and Wine tasting at our chosen wine estate. We then head into Stellenbosch, also known as the “City of Oaks”, it has giant oak trees shading the streets, which are lined with picturesque cafes, boutiques and art galleries. The Cape Dutch architecture dates back to South Africa’s Dutch colonial history. Our guide will take you on a walking tour of the historic town before we head over the Hellshoogte Mountain pass as we make our way to Franschhoek.
Franschhoek Wine Tour
The Franschhoek valley is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful places to visit in South Africa. With towering mountains and vineyards, Franschhoek offers stunning views from its famous wine farms. Franschhoek, meaning “French corner”, truly lives up to its name, with French-inspired cafes, delis and wine shops, and architecture dating back to the time of the Huguenots. You will experience a wine tasting in the picturesque Franschhoek valley and a see to the picturesque town.
Drakenstein Prison
Stop for a photo here and learn more about the Mandela story from your guide. In 1982 Mandela was transferred from the maximum security prison on Robben Island to Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town. From there, Mandela was moved to the then Victor Verster Prison on 9 December 1988, where he lived in a private house inside the prison compound. Victor Verster, a farm prison, was often used as a stepping stone for releasing lower-risk political prisoners. Mandela served another 14 months at Victor Verster (Now called Drakenstein) Prison until his release on 11 February 1990. On the day of his release, reporters from all over the world surrounded the prison, giving the prison worldwide publicity.
Paarl Wine Tour
Paarl wines are now world renowned, primarily for the quality of their Shiraz while Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Viognier and Cabernet Sauvignon are also increasingly well regarded, and the region is home to some of the Western Cape’s most influential wineries. About an hour’s drive from Cape Town, the region has earned international acclaim not only for its Paarl wines but also the breathtaking beauty of its natural surroundings. The name Paarl means ‘pearl’ and reflects the way the ancient granite mountains, which early Dutch settlers called ‘den Diamont ende Peerlbergh’ (‘the diamond and pearl mountain’), glisten in the distance.
We visit the our chosen Wine Estate to enjoy a wine tasting (5 wines) complete with a sweet and decadent pairing in Paarl. Choose your favourite wine and then enjoy a glass of it as you sit under the trees and take in all the ambiance before heading back to Cape Town.
Your guide will highlight points of interest along the way (in English), and will be on hand to answer any questions you have about the route or wine farms.

Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) Tour
What is Méthode Cap Classique (MCC)? Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) is the term for South African sparkling wines crafted using traditional methods. Coined in 1992 due to restrictions on the use of 'Champagne,' MCC signifies a premium category in South Africa. This term emerged in response to the prohibition on using 'Champagne' and 'Champenoise' for any product other than the bottle-fermented wine from the Champagne region in France.
Sparkling wine (or MCC) is renowned for its effervescence and celebratory nature. It's characterized by its lively bubbles, which are a result of carbon dioxide trapped within the wine during the fermentation process. This unique feature creates a refreshing and invigorating sensation on the palate. Sparkling wine is often associated with special occasions and festivities, making it a popular choice for toasts and celebrations.
Spend the day exploring this unique sparkling wine category and try some of the South Africa's, and the worlds, best Méthode Cap Classique wines.

We were picked up on time at the city-bus tour stop very close to our hotel and brought to meet the tram line in Franschhoek which then took us around to wineries on our allocated ‘Burgundy’ route (there was also a bus route section). … We got a lunch along the way at Boschendal (also at our own cost) – Good meats and cheese and nice looking bread … and we finished off with a shared gin tasting at Bartinney – spectacular views at this estate and from their tasting shed. Great too that the tram staff took care of purchases and had everything ready for pick-up at the end of the day, so nice not to have to cart things around with us. An intoxicating mix of culinary delights and rich cultural heritage epitomises this, the country’s oldest wine route.

After a glass or three of the good stuff, it’s not a good idea to drive, which is why we recommend Tuk Tuk Stellies , whose affordable rates make this an appealing option. Franschhoek
Founded by French Huguenots in 1688, Franschhoek is certainly the Cape’s “French Corner”. With lush vineyards and majestic mountains as the backdrop, the Franschhoek experience is a celebration of life, as the French would have it.

Wonderful Winelands: Cape Town launches new wine guide
The City of Cape Town has launched a new wine guide that highlights the unique wine experiences to be had in the beautiful Cape Winelands.
Celebrating the wonderful wines of the Cape Town Winelands
Cape Town wine tourism could likely see a big boost, now that the City of Cape Town has launched the brand new Wineland Wonders initiative that celebrates the City’s wine routes.
Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos, recently unveiled did the new winelands wonders guide, explaining that this initiative stemmed from his drive to spotlight the unique wine experiences in and around the city.
“I’ve always believed that our world-class wines represent a fantastic value proposition, not only for tourists but also for economic growth. That’s why I encouraged the department’s Tourism and Place Marketing Branch to develop this guide – it’s about highlighting Cape Town’s rich wine culture and helping people explore our stunning wine farms,” Alderman Vos said.
Vos added that wine tourism in the cape was a big attraction, revealing that in 2022, it contributed a staggering R3,05 billion to South Africa’s economy.
“According to an impact study by the South African Wine Industry Information and Systems, the wine industry in our province created over 245 000 jobs that year, with 3,36 jobs generated for every R1 million capital investment. This is more than double the national average of 1,18 jobs. Our wines are not only award-winning, but also vital for job creation and economic development. This guide will make it easier for locals and visitors alike to explore new farms or revisit old favourites,” Alderman Vos said.
What’s the wineland wonders guide about?
The wineland wonders guide will giver users information on wine regions and also features an interactive WhatsApp channel. It spotlights around 40 wine farms across three wine routes: Constantia in the Southern Suburbs, Helderberg (a sub-route of the Stellenbosch Wine Route), and the Durbanville Wine Valley.
Users can select their wine route and set Google Maps to direct them there, just with a few taps. They will also find info on wine varietals, as well as restaurant offerings and scenic venues in the area.
