Omsk: Western Siberia's hidden gem

A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov

A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov

Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.

The mystery of Kolchak’s gold

Omsk became the headquarters of the anti-Bolshevik white army led by Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak in 1918. In late 1918 there was a revolt in the city initiated by a leftist faction (Socialist Revolutionary Party or SPs) with 500 rebel deaths at the hands of Cossacks and Czechoslovak soldiers, a major factor in convincing the SPs to join the Bolsheviks. There is a large Soviet-era monument to the uprising at the corner of Lenina street and Broz Tito street.

Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.

win tung travel

Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the  Omsk Regional Archives  at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. The statue guards  Kolchak restaurant , a four-story culinary complex featuring a steak house, an Irish pub, a Central Asian café and an Italian eatery.  For more details on where and how to dig Kolchak's gold, see  Top Ten Mysterious Lost Treasures of Russia

Dostoevsky and the Tsar

At 1.15 million people Omsk dwarfs the region’s second largest city, Tara (population 28,000). The city is split by the River Irtysh into two sections (all places of interest are on the right bank) with downtown emanating from the River Om.

Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A  museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk  is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.

Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.

In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.

Omsk’s cultural heritage

The Pushkin State Library is worth a look with busts of Russian literary figures adorning the front side of the building. At the corner under the big “M” is one of several stations of the never completed Omsk metro. Construction began in 1992, but as of 2014 the project is again dormant due to financing problems.

One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of  his works .

Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.

Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams,  Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.

Siberian   punk, jazz and the classics

While Omsk may not be on everyone’s radar musically, it does host a  musical theater  built just after the war. The building on 10 Let Oktyabrya Street is in the form of an enormous sloping grand piano.

Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band,  Grazhdanskaya oborona  (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.

In Russia, Omsk is known among the younger, tech-savvy generation primarily because of the “Omsk bird,” also known as Winged Doom. The origin of what became one of Russia’s most ubiquitous memes comes from a painting by German artist Heiko  Müller. One day in 2009 an Internet user posted this painting with the line, “Welcome to Omsk,” at the top. Additional versions menace viewers stating, “Don't try to leave Omsk,” and “Omsk is closer than you think.” Like many popular memes on the Internet, this one went viral and has become something like an unofficial symbol of the city.

Lycoming hopes to move to 2-0 as warriors travel to cortland today.

Lycoming’s football team is hoping to build off last week’s 48-12 win and move to 2-0 to begin this season as the Warriors travel to Cortland for a game on Saturday.

Lycoming had a monster second-quarter performance last week against Widener, scoring 31 of its 48 points.

The Warriors were able to move the ball with ease on the ground as Lycoming ran for 209 yards, 143 of which came fromTerrance Oliver, who carried it 12 times and averaged an impressive 11.9 yards per carry while also scoring a touchdown. Quasim Benson also had 16 carries for 47 yards.

Lycoming pressured Widener’s quarterbacks well last Saturday. jeff Chaplin completed just 50% of his passes as he was 7 for 14 for 131 yards and was sacked once. Michael Caloiaro was sacked four times and threw for just 84 yards.

On the ground, Widener ran it for just four yards as Lycoming didn’t allow the Pride to move the ball successfully.

For Lycoming, Will Fish threw for just 86 yards, but did have three touchdown passes.

Cortland had a monster game in Week 1, pummeling Hilbert on the road, 76-0. Cortland scored 28 points in each of the first two quarters and had 286 rushing yards and 195 passing. Zac Boyes got the majority of Cortland’s reps at quarterback, going 10 for 12 for 131 yards and three touchdowns.

On the ground, five different backs had at least 43 rushing yards, led by Tomaso Ramos’ 68 yards and Boyes’ 51 yards. Boyes is a dual threat quarterback, who’s able to run and pass and keep defenses on their toes.

Defensively, Cortland had nine players combine or record a tackle for loss and two players forced a fumble in Aden Wiser and Jaden Martinez.

Lycoming will need a solid game offensively and play well defensively to limit Cortland.

15 Best Things To Do In Kengtung (Myanmar)

Kengtung is one of the more remote places in Myanmar, but if you make the effort to come here then you will be rewarded with pretty scenery and a quaint town that has yet to be overrun with tourists.

One of the great highlights of a trip to Kengtung is the chance to visit the local villages that surround the town.

Here you can get a glimpse of how local ethnic groups live and work in modern day Myanmar and you can also enjoy trekking and hiking through the lush jungles that abound here.

As Kengtung is part of pretty Shan State, you can also spend time sampling what many people will tell you is some of the most delicious food in the country.

Here are the 15 best things to in Kengtung …

1. Admire the Standing Buddha

Standing Buddha Kengtung

One of the focal points of Kengtung is the Standing Buddha which you won’t be able to miss, wherever you are in the town.

The Buddha dominates the skyline and can be seen from almost all parts of the town and soars to a height of some 60 feet.

It stands on a hill that overlooks the town and although there isn’t much in the surrounding area directly, it is still worth coming here to admire the Buddha up close.

It is also conveniently en-route to Naun Tong Lake so you can combine a visit to both places at the same time.

2. Visit Dhat Zoam Doi Monastery

Dhat Zoam Doi Monastery is a great place to come in Kengtung if you want to see some gorgeous architecture with a difference.

The reason why the design of the monastery is notable is that it was built in the shape of a boat, which makes it highly unusual in Myanmar.

When you visit you can watch the monks praying and working here and you can also take in the pretty scenery that surrounds you and gives you a glimpse of rural life in Kengtung.

3. Climb up Lone Tree Hill

Lone Tree Hill Kengtung

Lone Tree Hill might sound like an unexpected name for a landmark in Myanmar but it describes the spot perfectly.

As you would imagine from the name, you can admire a large tree here which is said to have been planted some 250 years ago.

The tree is even more notable as it stands alone on the hill and you can check out its twisted branches that have grown over the centuries.

Another good reason to come here is to take in the views over the town from the hill which is particularly picturesque at sunset.

4. Bathe in Kengtung Hot Springs

Kengtung Hot Springs

One of the great attractions in Kengtung is the Kengtung Hot Springs.

These are basically thermal springs and there are a number of bath houses in the area that let you enjoy the mineral waters.

Another quirky thing to do here is buy chicken or quail eggs from the local shops and then boil them in the hot waters if you fancy a snack.

This is also a top area for picnicking so you can bring some snacks and chill out at the hot springs.

5. Shop in the Main Market

Kengtung Market

The Main Market in Kengtung is known for being the best place to come if you want to try some of the local street food as well as do some shopping.

Kengtung has a wide mix of residents from the Shan, Indian and Chinese community, who all sell food and local products in the market.

You will also find members of ethnic tribes here who come down from the mountains to sell local handicrafts so this is a good spot to visit if you want to pick up some souvenirs.

As with all local markets in Myanmar, it is best to come here in the early morning as this is when the market is at its most lively.

6. Go trekking

Trekking In Kengtung

If you want to get out of the town proper then the best thing to do is hire a local guide and go trekking in the surrounding jungle.

There are a huge number of treks that you can take here which include jaunts to local waterfalls and hot springs, or you can hike out to the local villages.

This means that you can enjoy the picturesque jungles while also getting in a bit of a workout at the same time.

7. Walk around Naung Tung Lake

Naung Tung Lake Kengtung

One of the prettiest spots in Kengtung is Naung Tung Lake which is a great place to visit if you want to see a more serene side of the town.

There are also a clutch of restaurants around the lake which means that many locals come here to socialize and take in the cool breezes that waft off the lake.

You can also visit the local vendors here and try famous Burmese snacks like dried salted fish.

8. Admire Wat Pha Jao Lung

Phra Chao Luang Temple Kengtung

Wat Pha Jao Lung is one of the most famous temples in Kengtung and is located in the center of town.

The outside of the temple looks unremarkable but the inside is a true delight and is covered in ornate red and gold paint work.

As such it is well worth visiting the temple when you are in town and checking out the decorative touches for which it is famous.

This is also a nice spot to relax in as it is offers a more restful atmosphere to much of the hurried town.

9. Cool off at Pin Tauk Waterfall

Pin Tauk Waterfall

If you are visiting the Akha Village on the outskirts of Kengtung then make sure that you also pay a visit to Pin Tauk Waterfall.

Here you will find a large, gushing cataract which you can get to via a scenic jungle path.

The base of the falls is encircled by large rocks and many local families come here to picnic as this is a cool spot that allows you to recharge after a hot trek through the leafy jungle to get here.

10. Try the local Shan food

Shan food Myanmar

Many locals will tell you that the best food in Myanmar is found in Shan State.

With that in mind, make sure you spend time trying out the local delights such as Khow Soi-shan noodle soup which is a local favorite that is usually eaten for lunch.

This usually comes in a broth with meatballs, or you can try another variety that uses yellow chickpeas.

If you want to have a local breakfast, then try out the Shan pizza which is a kind of flatbread, or sample the delicious curries for which this part of Myanmar is so famous.

11. Visit the Water Buffalo Market

Water Buffalo Market

One of the quirkier attractions in Kengtung is the chance to visit the Water Buffalo Market.

As you would expect, this is the place where locals come to trade and sell water buffalo which are used to plow the land and work on farms.

This is a less well known spot in town but if you want to see a slice of local life then it is well worth the effort to come here.

12. Travel to the Tribal Villages

Lahu Village Kengtung

The main reason that many people visit Kengtung in the first place is for the chance to explore the local tribal villages on the outskirts of town.

Some of these are the Wa, Sha, Akha and Lahu villages and this is the perfect opportunity to see how different ethnic groups in Kengtung live and work.

You can also check out how locals cook delicious Burmese dishes at home and many villagers also make traditional handicrafts that they then sell at markets in the region.

Depending on the village you choose, you will be able to watch the artisans at work as they weave traditional textiles or make jewelry.

13. Dine in a local tea shop

Tea Leaf Salad Myanmar

If you are looking for a place to have a beer and relax then head to a local tea shop in Kengtung.

These are dotted all over town and you can get Burmese draft beer and snack of delicious local treats like barbecued meats.

Other staple snacks usually served in Burmese tea shops include the ubiquitous tea leaf salad which is made from pickled tea leaves which is certainly an acquired taste but is also definitely worth trying at least once when you are in Myanmar.

14. Visit Immaculate Heart Cathedral

If you want to see something a little different than all the temples and pagodas in Kengtung then take a trip to the Immaculate Heart Cathedral.

This is actually a large Catholic church, but it is well worth visiting as it was built by the British during the colonial period in the signature style of the era.

The inside of the cathedral features tall columns and soaring arched roofs which make it top pick if you want to see some different design features in Kengtung and check out how buildings would have been built in days gone by.

15. Admire Wat In

Wat Inn Temple Kengtung

There are a number of temples in Kengtung, but one that you definitely shouldn’t miss is Wat In on the Airport Road that leads to the town.

The main reason to come here is that this wat is known for its large collection of Buddha artifacts which have to be seen to be believed.

These come in a number of different shapes and sizes and you will find paintings as well as statues and sculptural pieces, many of which are gilded in pretty gold leaf which is a sign of reverence to the Buddha in Myanmar.

Taylor Swift Shared the Sweetest Travis Kelce Story During Her VMAs 2024 Acceptance Speech

win tung travel

Travis Kelce may not have accompanied Taylor Swift to the VMAs 2024 , but he was definitely there in spirit. In her acceptance speech for Video of the Year, Swift took a moment to shout-out her boyfriend, which can only mean true love.

Swift took home the fan-voted Video of the Year award for her “Fortnite” music video featuring Post Malone. She began her acceptance speech by thanking her collaborators, before going on to add a very special thank-you to a very special someone, explaining that although the video itself seems sad, it was actually a very fun video to make, and Kelce is a big part of why that was.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

“Something that I’ll always remember is that when I would finish a take, and I’d say cut, and we’d be done with that take, I would always just hear someone cheering and like, ‘Woo!’ from across the studio where we were shooting it,” Swift said. “And that one person was my boyfriend, Travis. ” At this point, the crowd’s applause almost drowned her out.

She continued, “Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic. So I want to thank him for adding that to our shoot because I’ll always remember that.”

Swift finished her speech by thanking her fans for “making my life what it is,” and “for making the Eras Tour what it has become, for making The Tortured Poets Department what it has become.”

The NFL player couldn’t accompany Taylor Swift to the VMAs 2024 because he was due in Kansas City for practice, but he assured everyone on his New Heights podcast that he was rooting for his girlfriend from afar. “She’s nominated [for] about 10 of those things tonight,” he said on the September 11 episode. “Hopefully, she can walk away with some Moonmen!”

Clearly, he really needn’t have worried.
