Welcome to First Tee

First Tee is a youth development organization that enables kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges. By seamlessly integrating the game of golf with a life skills curriculum, we create active learning experiences that build inner strength, self-confidence, and resilience that kids can carry to everything they do. We’re Building Game Changers through our junior golf programs.

Our Programs

Experiences are our greatest teacher. First Tee believes in developing the ones that are just as fun as they are meaningful, where kids feel excited to grow, safe to fail, and better equipped for whatever comes their way next. Through our golf-based personal growth programs, we see kids build life and leadership skills that empower them in all areas of  life, including school, friendships and eventually careers.

• Extracurricular

I have been playing golf since I was a little girl and my dad took me to the golf course. My family is a member at the Kalamazoo Country Club where I play most of my golf when I am not playing in tournaments. I played in the junior golf programs at the club when I was younger and have continued to play in regional golf tournaments where I compete against other golfers in my age division.

I love the game of golf because of the many interesting and influential people I have met and continue to meet on the course and at the club. I love the fact that golf is a game I can play my whole life and with my family. My family is hugely invested in my golf game and I love how it is a great family sport.

My favorite club is my 8 iron, but my favorite part of the game is chipping and driving. Chipping and driving are the best part of my game, and where I am the most consistent. I’ve also caddied for my dad multiple times during his men’s golf league, and I’ve caddied for my uncle in his member-guest tournament.

Starting at the age of five, my dad and I have won the father-daughter tournaments at our club multiple times over the past many years. My mom and I have more recently started playing in the mother-daughter tournaments and we have won the last few years. My mom and I play as partners every Wednesday night in the ladies league at our country club. My dad and I usually play twice a week, but it varies based on our schedule. Once in a while, my little sister will play with me which is always fun! She plays Special Olympics golf, and it is always fun to watch her participate in events.

I have played on two competitive golf tours in the past couple of years.  These include the Meijer Callaway Junior Tour and the West Michigan Junior Golf Tour .  All of my posted scores can be found on GHIN or my golf round statistics can be found here .

Eight events make up the West Michigan Junior Golf Tour June through August, and registration and payments for events are being accepted.

Mail name, address, phone, age, birth date, and e-mail address on a 3-by-5 card to WMJGT. Cost is $30 per event for boys 10 to 12, boys 9 and younger and girls 13 and younger. The cost for boys 13 to 14, 15 to 16, 17 to 18 and girls 14 and older is $50 per event (18-hole rounds).All events are flighted on the second day. Contact Ed Ripmaster at [email protected] .

• THE JUNIOR EVENTS INCLUDE West Michigan Junior Amateur, June 16-17 at Alpine; Wyoming Junior Championship, June 24-25 at The Pines; The Highlands Junior Amateur, June 30-July 1 at The Highlands; Kent County Junior Amateur, July 14-15 at L.E. Kaufman; West Michigan Junior Open, July 21-22 at Braeside; City Junior Championship, July 27-28 at Boulder Creek; Infamous Two-Man Junior, Aug. 4-5 at The Pines; Kaufman Junior Amateur, Aug. 11-12 at L.E. Kaufman.

• THE MINES GOLF COURSE is using a new free administrative service for local golf leagues, according to golf professional Melanie Loughlin. OnlineLeagueTracker.com will provide each league at The Mines a private Web site for players to view their league schedule, individual and team pairings. The site also will include rounds played, league handicaps and other information. Leagues at other courses also may use the service.

• MAPLE HILL GOLF will present its first demonstration weekend of the season Friday and Saturday at the practice center, 5555 Ivanrest Ave. SW. Demonstration equipment from Callaway, Mizuno, Cleveland, Ping, Tour Edge, Adams, Bridgestone, Wilson and TaylorMade will be featured 3 to 7 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

• THE MEADOWS at Grand Valley State has been recognized by LINKS Magazine as one of the top 25 college golf courses in the U.S. The Meadows, a Michael Hurdzan design, is ranked No. 22 and is one of two Michigan courses on the list. The University of Michigan Golf Course is the other. See the list at linksmagazine.com .

• ANGELS CROSSING GOLF CLUB near Vicksburg will open the season under a new agreement between Kalamazoo County State Bank and KemperSports management company. The W. Bruce Matthews III-designed course, which opened in 2006, is a past winner of Golf Digest's "America's Best New Courses" designation and last year was named one of Golfweek's top 100 residential courses. • THE GAYLORD GOLF MECCA, a group of public and resort courses, opens the season with its fourth annual free golf weekend Friday through Sunday. • BOYNE GOLF announced the 2009 version of its "Gr8 Escape" golf package. The event includes unlimited golf on seven of the Boyne courses in Boyne Falls and Harbor Springs, meals, parties, a scramble event, casino vouchers, unlimited practice range use and other amenities. Among the choices is 18 holes of play on the Bay Harbor Golf Club course ($180 value). Rates start at $555 for a three-night stay, or $855 for five nights. Call (800) GO-BOYNE or visit boyne.com .

• TPC OF MICHIGAN'S COURSE in Dearborn will host a Nature Valley Amateur qualifier May 4. The TPC event is among 18 qualifying tournaments with golfers advancing to the championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Fla., Oct. 23-24. Based on performance, 72 players across four flights qualify to participate in the championship. Golfers with a USGA index between 0 and 24 are eligible. To register, visit naturevalleygolf.com .
