Scarlet Lady

The first ship within the Virgin Voyages fleet, the adults-only Scarlet Lady welcomes more than 2,770 passengers and 1,160 crew members. Debuted in October 2021, the Scarlet Lady boasts a collection of unique amenities not often found on cruise ships, including a tattoo studio, a record shop and a blow-dry bar. Standouts include Extra Virgin, a traditional Italian restaurant serving handmade pasta, and Gunbae, a Korean barbecue eatery.

The Scarlet Lady also deviates from cruise industry tradition when it comes to onboard entertainment. Instead of Broadway classics, cruisers will be treated to six original shows, along with "micro plays" that are performed throughout the ship.

The Best Weekend Cruises from Miami

Miami

If you really need a getaway that involves lots of fun in the sun, but are short on vacation days or dough, a weekend cruise from Miami can be just the ticket. These itineraries are typically three or four nights in length and attract a slightly younger, more budget-conscious crowd than week-long sailings — with the majority of passengers intent on having a good time. Here are the best weekend cruises from Miami to consider, from party ships to more family-friendly options.

Carnival Sensation This 2,056-passenger ship gives you two options for budget-friendly weekend trips, both departing on Thursday and returning Monday morning. The ship's Western Caribbean  cruises visit  Key West , Florida, and  Cozumel , Mexico, while the Eastern Caribbean  version includes a stop at  Grand Turk . Whichever itinerary you choose, the place to be during sea days is the central pool on the Lido Deck, where contests, games, and a DJ add to the all-around party vibe.

Empress of the Seas Price-wise it’s hard to beat the four-night Bahamas cruise on the 1,602-passenger Empress of the Seas . Just don't expect to find the latest innovations from Royal Caribbean  on board. This is the oldest ship in the fleet, and even though it was refurbished in 2016, it doesn't have the bumper cars, surfing simulators, and sky diving of the line's newer (and more expensive) ships. There is still a lot of fun on board, though, with poolside buckets of beer and frozen margaritas the order of the day. The ship departs on Thursday and returns on Monday morning after calling on Nassau , Bahamas, and Key West.

Norwegian Sky Norwegian often runs promotions that let you pick perks to be included in your fare — including open bar. You can put it to good use at  Norwegian Sky 's 12 bars and lounges, where you can order cocktails, beer, and wine without an extra bill. The 2,004-passenger ship does three-night  Bahamas  cruises year-round, departing on Friday and returning Monday morning. Along the way you'll have time in Nassau as well as  Great Stirrup Cay , the line's private island.

Celebrity Equinox With its contemporary décor, gourmet French dining at Murano, relaxing Lawn Club, and adults-only Solarium Pool, this 2,850-passenger ship is a more sophisticated option for couples who have left their 20s (and 30s and even 40s) behind. If that sounds more like a vacation than a party-centric sailing,  Celebrity Equinox  will begin four-night Western Caribbean sailings that depart Miami on Saturday and return on Wednesday morning beginning in January 2017.

Disney Magic   Take the whole gang away from the weekend with a three-night Bahamas cruises on Disney Magic . As you would expect from Disney, the 2,700-passengers ship offers nonstop fun for little ones, including extensive kids clubs, character meet-ups, and live shows. Parents can retreat to the adults-only Quiet Cove Pool and take advantage of the grown-up nightlife — and the babysitting. The ship departs on Thursday and returns Sunday morning with a call on Disney’s private Bahamian island, Castaway Cay .

Weekend cruises: How to find 2- and 3-night getaways

Erica Silverstein

Weekend trips let you get away without missing too much work or school — but what if your preferred escape is a cruise? I'm here to tell you that weekend cruises are a real thing and can be a wonderful way of getting your ship fix when you're short on time.

The days of the two-night cruise to nowhere are gone, but two- and three-night weekend cruises still exist from ports ranging from Miami to Los Angeles. Read on to learn who sails these short getaways, where you can go and how much that weekend jaunt to the Bahamas is going to cost you.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Best weekend cruise itineraries

weekend cruise miami

If you're looking to hop a ship for a few nights, you can't just sail from anywhere to anywhere. It's not like booking a hotel. Thanks to the complicated Passenger Vessel Services Act , foreign-flagged cruise ships cannot leave port, sail in circles with their casinos, shops and spas open, then return back to port two nights later. Nor can they hop from one U.S. city to another. Ships need to call in another country before heading back – which limits where you can sail on a weekend cruise.

The most popular weekend cruises sail from Miami, Port Canaveral or Palm Beach in Florida, to the Bahamas, with one or two stops in Nassau, Freeport or the cruise line's private island. Consider it a quick dash to the beach — ironic because you have to get to a warm-weather, coastal area to meet your ship in the first place.

On the Pacific Coast, weekend cruises from Los Angeles, San Diego or Long Beach in California (near Los Angeles) head to Ensenada, Mexico for a quick getaway. Farther north, you might find a short repositioning sailing between Seattle or San Francisco and Vancouver, British Columbia at the beginning or end of the Alaska cruise season .

Weekend cruises from New York or other East Coast ports like Boston or Baltimore don't really exist because two or three nights is not enough time to get to Canada, Bermuda or the Bahamas and back again.

Related: Caribbean vs. Bahamas cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

The other key thing to understand is a weekend cruise will typically require some time off work or missed school. That's because most cruise ships board in the afternoon and depart in the early evening then return to port in the morning. You can't punch out of work at 5 p.m. on Friday, hop aboard a ship and return Sunday night.

The most likely scenario is that you'll arrive at your ship Friday afternoon for a three-night cruise, which will deliver you back to port on Monday morning. Depending on your working hours, you might need to take a half day off on Friday and arrive late to work on Monday. If you've got a flexible schedule or Fridays off — no problem. A few lines offer Thursday or Saturday departures for three-night cruises, but they're rare and would require more missed school or work.

Two-nighters are rare in the weekend cruise world but do exist. The key line for cruisers short on time is Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line (come late April, it will transition into Margaritaville at Sea ).

This line sails exclusively two-night cruises back and forth between West Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. Depending on the week, you could depart on a Friday, spend Saturday on Grand Bahama Island and come home Sunday. Or, leave Saturday, beach it up Sunday and return Monday morning.

Cruise lines sailing 2- and 3-night weekend cruises

weekend cruise miami

You can count on Bahamas Paradise/Margaritaville at Sea for a quick weekend cruise fix, but that's a one-ship cruise line sailing an older, refurbished ship. From the major cruise lines, most of the big-ship lines offer a consistent schedule of three-night cruises. The higher-end, luxury lines rarely offer a sailing that short.

Carnival Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean all offer three-night Bahamas cruises from Florida to Nassau and/or the line's private island. Departure ports include Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale.

Carnival, Disney and Royal Caribbean also take care of West Coast folks with three-night sailings from southern California (Long Beach, Los Angeles and San Diego) to Ensenada, Mexico.

You can count on those lines to offer entire seasons of short sailings. A few other lines, such as Holland America or Princess Cruises , will offer the occasional repositioning sailing along the Pacific Coast between San Francisco or Seattle and Vancouver. Sometimes those short cruises will fall over a weekend, allowing you that quick getaway without missing work.

Weekend cruise cost

Cheap weekend cruises are not hard to find; three-night sailings are among the most affordable cruises you can buy, both because you're not on board all that long, and because cruise lines often put older ships without the latest wow-factor attractions on these routes.

I'm currently seeing three-night Bahamas cruises from $129 per person, based on two people sharing an inside (windowless) cabin . That breaks down to $43/night for transportation, food, accommodations and entertainment for one person ($86/night for a couple). You'll have a hard time finding a hotel for that price, let alone lodging plus multiple meals.

The cheapest balcony cabin I found was just shy of $200 total for one person (under $65 per night), though fares in the $200s and $300s were more common.

Prices will vary depending on the cruise line, ship, sail date and how far in advance you're booking. If you're flexible on timing, look for the best weekend cruise deals and plan your getaway for those dates.

Related: 6 ways to get a deal on a cruise

Three-night Mexico cruises at press time are starting at $149 per person ($50 per night), with balconies from $237 ($79 per night).

Note that Disney cruises to the Bahamas or Mexico are priced much higher than other cruise lines. Pricing for a three-night Disney Mexico cruise starts just shy of $1,000 per person for an inside cabin and a three-night Bahamas cruise from $625 per person. Still, it's cheaper than a weeklong Disney cruise.

Pros and cons of weekend cruises

weekend cruise miami

Weekend cruises only work if you live within easy driving distance of a departure port. That way, you can still work half a day on Friday and simply arrive back to work a little late on Monday (assuming you're a 9-to-5-er).

If you need to fly or drive many hours to your departure port, you're looking at more of a long weekend with a day or two of time off from work required. However, if you have a flexible schedule or work off hours, a weekend cruise is definitely doable.

Weekend cruises have many benefits, the obvious one being they do not require missing much school or work. They're more affordable than a longer cruise, so they can be great for folks on a budget. You can tack them onto a longer vacation in Florida or California to combine two trips into one.

These short trips are also a great way to rack up points toward elite status on your favorite cruise line, especially if you book a suite that earns you extra points.

Related: Short cruises are cheaper, but are they right for you?

The drawbacks are the lack of choice in destination and cruise line. You won't be able to try every restaurant or attraction on board your cruise ship because you simply won't have enough time.

If you party hard, get sunburned or wear yourself out with lots of active shore excursions, you might come home exhausted instead of well rested and not ready to return to the office on Monday.

Weekend cruises also have a reputation for being party cruises. The last time I sailed on a three-night cruise, I met lots of ladies on bachelorette party getaways, and the nightclub, bars and karaoke were hopping each evening — more so than on longer cruises. If you're looking for a more sedate atmosphere, a longer cruise might be more your speed.

Bottom line

Weekend cruises are a fun way to get your ship fix without taking a full vacation or breaking the bank. They make more sense if you live within an hour or two of your cruise ship's departure port, but it can still be worth taking a long weekend for a three-day cruise even if you have to build in some travel time.

However, if you love cruising so much that you might have a hard time leaving a ship after just a few nights, you might want to skip the weekend sailing and save up for a weeklong cruise instead.

Memorial Day weekend plans in Miami Beach: Air and Sea Show, road closures and parking restrictions

MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - It’s a big holiday weekend, and thousands will be flocking to South Florida for an array of activities, including an annual military spectacle.

The City of Miami Beach is already preparing for this Memorial Day Weekend with an expected police presence, parking restrictions and road closures.

The possibilities for fun are endless. Many Floridians will be breaking the heat at the beach, while others will stop by and view a one-of-a-kind memorial. The Hyundai Air and Sea Show is paying tribute to the nation’s fallen servicemen and women in Miami Beach starting Friday.

“You’re going to see incredible displays, demonstrations, fly-bys, capabilities exercises from all five branches of our military and from our British allies here that are honoring America,” said Mickey Markoff, the Air and Sea Show’s executive producer. “You’re going to be awestruck by the technology, the power, and the fuel that will be turned into noise. The sound of freedom.”

It’s definitely not a sight you see every day, as military jets will fly by and army tanks will roll onto Ocean Drive with a full police escort, which will make beachgoers excited.

“They had like a tank over there or something. It was kind of insane,” said Bobby.

“Thank you, Miami. Thank you, USA,” said a beachgoer.

7Skyforce flew over Opa-locka Airport to capture planes and helicopters in place for the big weekend event.

“It’s a good day to remember the soldiers that have served before us,” said Carlos Seijo, station commander and Army recruiter. “You can actually experience what the Army can bring, like combat related MOS or combat support.”

“I’m overall excited to be here because I was born and raised in South Florida, so I am very pleased to see that every year it gets better,” said Capt. Mateo Quintero, an Army recruiter.

“It gives me the opportunity to pause and remember all that have come before us,” said U.S. Army Col. Jennifer Walkawicz.

One of those heroes is Michael Ling, an Air Force rescue pilot, who gathered his team to save the life of a 12-year-old boy on a cruise ship off the Florida coast.

“I am an HC130J pilot, rescue pilot,” said Ling.

On the first weekend in May, Ling and his team sprung into action to help the boy.

Ling said that’s all in a day’s work.

“So that just happened. Now, we are here performing for the air show,” he said.

Ling will be one of the pilots flying during the show. 7News spoke to him at Wodka Vodka Salute, a celebration and warm welcome for heroes.

“We’ll go and do a rescue demo, we’ll do some air refueling with the helicopters, and that’s pretty much it,” said Ling. “Life is good.”

Another pilot flying an A10 jet sky high over the weekend is Air Force pilot Riley Nix.

“I’m an A10 pilot for Moody Air Force Base,” said Nix. “We’ll just do some maneuvering, we’re gonna do a combat search and rescue demonstration with some helicopters and some C130s.”

Nix said the meaning behind the show is why we celebrate Memorial Day.

“It just reminds us how blessed we are to be in this country,” said Nix.

Meanwhile, Miami Beach Police are making sure everyone remains safe this weekend and stays on their best behavior.

“We have about 18 different, local, state and federal law enforcement agencies that will be in our city,” said Miami Beach Police spokesperson Christopher Bess.

Two hundred thousand daily visitors are expected over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, and visitors can expect to see traffic changes. There will be lots of road closures along South Beach.

If by any chance, you miss the Hyundai Air and Sea Show, Hyundai Motors America CEO Randy Parker said the show isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

“So proud to be part of this Memorial Day weekend event. We just made a very special announcement today that we’re going to extend our partnership for three more years,” said Parker.

Collins and Washington avenues will flow north and southbound with access to the roads only at Fifth and 16th streets. On Ocean Drive, traffic will only be allowed to enter at 13th Street and go southbound to Fifth Street, with no access to any other street.

New parking fees will go into effect on Friday:

  • Non-residents will pay a flat parking rate of $30.
  • Residents will pay $15.
  • Street parking will be prohibited on Collins Avenue between Fifth Street and Española Way.

“So please pack patience,” said Bess.

The City of Miami Beach is following steps by the City of Miami in closing Flagler Monument Island to keep people safe . This move mimics Miami as the city closed four spoil islands for boaters due to significant trash being left behind.

For those driving to Miami Beach, parking garages located on the northern side will be open to visitors.

There are also four locations that will have free trolley pickup and drop-off. For more information, click here .

American airlines passengers in miami stuck on sweltering boeing plane: travelers.

American Airlines passengers were stuck on a sweltering Boeing jet for more than an hour while waiting to depart from Miami to Costa Rica late Thursday night, two travelers told FOX Business.

The American Airlines Flight 1353 passengers say they were deplaned twice before being switched to another aircraft at Miami International Airport. Data from FlightAware says the Boeing 737 eventually left around five hours after scheduled departure and arrived in San Jose earlier this morning.

"All the little kids were crying, it got to the point that second time we were on there, where it was like, it had to be at least 95 degrees in there. It was ridiculous," passenger Daniel Solana, who says he was traveling with his 3-year-old son for a nephew’s baptism, told FOX Business. "The majority of the passengers were upset, they just wanted answers. Every time they deplaned us, they didn’t have answers."

One video obtained by FOX Business shows passengers trying to cool themselves off by waving sheets of paper as the flight’s captain is heard saying over the intercom "the power is just not working for us today." Another shows the plane’s lights flickering, leading a disgruntled passenger to complain "here we go again!"

American Airlines said Friday they were looking into the situation.

Solana says when he boarded the plane for the first time, "it was a little hot" and "they kept telling us we have some electrical problems, but they wouldn’t really tell us anything else."

After about an hour and twenty minutes, Solana says passengers were ordered off the plane.

"Basically they just said we are going to fix the plane and then we are going to go out, so we are all sitting in the terminal like, ‘ok you are going to fix a power failure?’ Especially with all the stuff that has been going on with Boeing and it was a 737 Boeing," he said.

Solana says passengers were then told to start boarding the same plane again, but it remained hot inside the cabin.

"Both times I was on the plane, I was drenched in sweat the whole time," he said. "I was going to the bathroom, getting napkins and wiping my face."

DELTA PLANE CATCHES FIRE IN SEATTLE IN DRAMATIC NEW VIDEO

After sitting on the tarmac for another hour, Solana says four to five attempts to turn on the plane’s engines without the help of generators weren’t successful, ultimately forcing a second deplaning. Some of the passengers, he said, were yelling "open the door, open the door it’s hot!"

Another passenger, Bobbie Barbour – who was traveling to Costa Rica with her mom for a wedding – told FOX Business "as soon as we were about to back out, the lights just went off again and the pilot kept trying to crank it and turn the plane back on, and that is when everybody started yelling."

Solana added: "This was already four hours – my whole thing was I was with my son, and there was more kids on the flight and it was hot. We didn’t get offered a bottle of water, or some chips or anything and that was my whole gripe with them."

Eventually the passengers were placed on a second aircraft that was "nice and cold" compared to the first, according to Solana, but they had to wait just a bit longer to depart as the cabin crew had to remove an "overly intoxicated" passenger and his luggage.

"When we got here" in Costa Rica, "funny enough, the jet bridge was broken," Solana also said.

Hitting the Florida roads for Memorial Day weekend? Avoid these days and times

By John MacLauchlan

Updated on: May 23, 2024 / 6:20 AM EDT / CBS Miami

MIAMI - This upcoming Memorial Day is expected to be a busy one on the road.

This year, nearly 2.3 million Floridians are forecast to take a road trip  for the holiday weekend, according to AAA - The Auto Club Group. That's a new all-time record and nearly 106,000 more Floridians on the road than last year.

The busiest times will be Thursday and Friday afternoons from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The best advice for those looking to avoid congestion is to travel before noon or after 7 p.m. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

"Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides," said AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins. "However, that holiday road trip may cost more at the gas pump this year."

During last year's holiday weekend, Florida gas prices averaged $3.41 per gallon. On Monday, May 20th, prices were averaging $3.44 a gallon. It remains to be seen if the price will go up mid to late week.

In total, AAA forecasts more than 2.5 million Floridians will journey 50 miles or more. That's 126,500 more holiday travelers than the previous high, which was set last year.

The auto club projects 224,201 Floridians will travel by air and 64,012 by other means.

For those catching flights, the average price for a round-trip domestic flight will be $778, according to AAA booking data. That's 2% more than last year's holiday weekend. International flights are 4 percent more expensive - averaging $1485 for a roundtrip ticket.

Overall, AAA expects 3.51 million Americans to travel by air this holiday weekend, "an increase of 4.8 percent over last year and a 9 percent jump compared to 2019."

Nationally, AAA projects the second highest traveled Memorial Day on record with nearly 43.8 million Americans hitting the road, air, buses, trains, or cruise ships. That's 1.7 million more travelers than last year, a 4 percent increase, yet slightly behind 2005's record of 44 million, according to the auto club.

Miami-Dade man still seeking reimbursement after crane crushed his car in February

Northeast miami-dade residents also looking for answers after being displaced following collapse.

Christina Vazquez , Reporter

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 76-year-old man says he is fed up with the number of times he has to call and argue with an insurance adjuster after a piece of a crane collapsed and totaled his Kia earlier this year.

It happened on Feb. 7 after Florida Power & Light officials told Local 10 News that contractors were working on a power line when a piece of the crane fell off and demolished Carlos Perez’s car that was parked near the 1300 block of Northeast 110th Terrace, just west of Biscayne Boulevard.

Following the incident, Perez said he hasn’t received any form of payment from the insurance adjuster working on behalf of the crane company.

Perez told Local 10 News Wednesday that the insurance adjuster told him over the phone to have patience.

However, as a brutal summer heat begins to bear down on South Florida residents, Perez says he is done walking to get groceries or being stranded at home because the companies involved have yet to fix the problem they allegedly caused.

“I need my car,” Perez said in Spanish. “I called the company, but I got no answers.”

Perez said he’s been in contact with the crane company and has not gotten any reimbursement.

Local 10 News could not reach the company but did reach the insurance adjuster representing the company.

They said they had no comment.

On the building next to Perez’s crushed car is a Miami-Dade unsafe building notice.

Residents who lived there, some elderly, some disabled, said they were displaced by February’s crane collapse.

On Feb. 13, Linda Canton told Local 10 News that she was helping her mom pack up after the apartment building was condemned.

“We have to pay for storage, we have to pay for our U-Haul,” she said.

One of the residents, who identified herself as Francisca, said she was asleep when she was thrown off her bed by the impact.

She said she rushed to her disabled neighbor to help her get out to safety.

This remains a developing situation.

FPL released the following statement on the matter to Local 10 News: “FPL takes all claims very seriously and carefully investigates the specifics of each case. It’s important to note this incident involved a contractor performing work for FPL. As a result, we have directed customers who contacted us about a claim to the contractor and its insurance company.”

Local 10 News has reached out to the following other companies to find out why Perez has not received any form of payment for the damage:

  • NextEra Energy
  • Charles Taylor Adjusting , who the family said settled on a $7,500 payment so Perez could buy a replacement car but then never delivered the payment.

More than 4,000 U.S. flights were delayed by midafternoon on the East Coast, continuing a trend that has tested the patience of travelers all week. Thankfully, relatively few flights were canceled — fewer than 100, according to tracking data from FlightAware.

There were delays on the highways, too.

Along Florida’s Turnpike, Wallis Tinnie said a traffic accident and road work slowed her drive to an African American history commemoration in the Florida Panhandle, the site in 1816 of the first battle of the Seminole Wars.

“But we’re comfortable with it,” the Miami woman said during a stop at Port Saint Lucie. “We left early, and our event is tomorrow. So hopefully — God willing, creek don’t rise — we’ll be there in plenty of time.”

The Transportation Security Administration predicted that Friday would be the busiest day of the holiday weekend for air travel, with nearly 3 million people expected to pass through airport checkpoints. TSA screened just under 2.9 million people Thursday, coming within about 11,000 of breaking the record set on the Sunday after Thanksgiving last year.

“Airports are going to be more packed than we have seen in 20 years,” AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz said.

Highways also are likely to be jammed as motorists head out of town and then return home. AAA predicted this will be the busiest start-of-summer weekend in nearly 20 years, with 43.8 million people expected to roam at least 50 miles from home between Thursday and Monday — 38 million of them taking vehicles.

The annual expression of wanderlust that accompanies the start of the summer travel season is happening at a time when Americans tell pollsters they are worried about the economy and the direction of the country.

“Memorial Day is a holiday weekend. I get to hang with family and friends, so I’d say that’s priceless, right?” Nene Efebo said during a two-hour wait for a delayed flight at Denver International Airport. “Anything to hang out with family and friends.”

Victoria Ramos Valdes of Miami was taking a driving vacation with her husband, Blake, and their children, ages 3 and 4 months old.

“We said, hey, we’re going to go for a $300 budget, and the hotel is around $150,” she said, but it has a water slide, providing plenty of entertainment. “We’re taking a nice family trip and doing our best to have the best Memorial Day weekend possible.”

Some travelers reported experiencing sticker shock when they booked their trips. Upon arriving at Philadelphia International Airport, Ciarra Marsh said the city “was not our original destination, but we chose here because it was cheaper.”

At Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, Larisa Latimer of New Lenox, Illinois, said her airfare was reasonable but other expenses for a getaway to New Orleans were not.

“I just have to make the accommodation,” she said. “The rental car is up … this year, the hotel accommodations were very unusually expensive.”

Kathy Larko of Fort Myers, Florida, used frequent-flyer miles — and some flexible scheduling — to pay for her trip to Chicago.

“I’m really conscious of looking at the cost of the entire trip. We’re staying a little farther out than we normally would” to get a lower hotel rate, she said. “We’re also flying back a day later, because we could get cheaper miles.”

The weekend’s highway traffic and crowded airports could be a sample of what is to come for several more weeks. U.S. airlines expect to carry a record number of passengers this summer. Their trade group estimates that 271 million travelers will fly between June 1 and August 31, breaking the record of 255 million set – you guessed it – last summer.

Cody Jackson in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, Melissa Perez Winder in Chicago and Shelley Adler in Washington contributed to this report.
