Things are finally looking up for the Voyager 1 interstellar spacecraft

Two of the four science instruments aboard the Voyager 1 spacecraft are now returning usable data after months of transmitting only gibberish, NASA scientists have announced.

Voyager 1

I was once sitting with my father while Googling how far away various things in the solar system are from Earth. He was looking for exact numbers, and very obviously grew more invested with each new figure I shouted out. I was thrilled. The moon? On average, 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers) away. The James Webb Space Telescope ? Bump that up to about a million miles (1,609,344 km) away. The sun? 93 million miles (149,668,992 km) away.  Neptune ? 2.8  billion  miles (4.5 billion km) away. "Well, wait until you hear about Voyager 1," I eventually said, assuming he was aware of what was coming. He was not.

"NASA's  Voyager 1  interstellar spacecraft actually isn't even in the solar system anymore," I announced. "Nope, it's more than 15 billion miles (24 billion km)  away from us  — and it's getting even farther as we speak." I can't quite remember his response, but I do indeed recall an expression of sheer disbelief. There were immediate inquiries about how that's even physically possible. There were bewildered laughs, different ways of saying "wow," and mostly, there was a contagious sense of awe. And just like that, a new Voyager 1 fan was born.

It is easy to see why Voyager 1 is among the most beloved robotic space explorers we have — and it is thus easy to understand why so many people felt a pang to their hearts several months ago, when Voyager 1 stopped talking to us.

For reasons unknown at the time, this spacecraft began sending back gibberish in place of the neatly organized and data-rich 0's and 1's it had been providing since its  launch in 1977 . It was this classic computer language which allowed Voyager 1 to converse with its creators while earning the title of "farthest human made object." It's how the spacecraft relayed vital insight that led to the discovery of new Jovian moons and, thanks to this sort of binary podcast, scientists incredibly identified a new ring of Saturn and created the solar system's first and only "family portrait." This code, in essence, is crucial to Voyager 1's very being.

Plus, to make matters worse, the issue behind the glitch turned out to be associated with the craft's Flight Data System, which is literally the system that transmits information about Voyager 1's health so scientists can correct any issues that arise. Issues like this one. Furthermore, because of the spacecraft's immense distance from its operators on Earth, it takes about 22.5 hours for a transmission to reach the spacecraft, and then 22.5 hours to receive a transmission back. Alas, things weren't looking good for a while — for about five months, to be precise.

But then, on April 20, Voyager 1  finally phoned home  with legible 0's and legible 1's.

Earth as a

"The team had gathered early on a weekend morning to see whether telemetry would return," Bob Rasmussen, a member of the Voyager flight team, told Space.com. "It was nice to have everyone assembled in one place like this to share in the moment of learning that our efforts had been successful. Our cheer was both for the intrepid spacecraft and for the comradery that enabled its recovery."

And  then,  on May 22 , Voyager scientists released the welcome announcement that the spacecraft has successfully resumed returning science data from two of its four instruments, the plasma wave subsystem and magnetometer instrument. They're now working on getting the other two, the cosmic ray subsystem and low energy charged particle instrument, back online as well. Though there technically are six other instruments onboard Voyager, those had been out of commission for some time.

The comeback

Rasmussen was actually a member of the Voyager team in the 1970s, having worked on the project as a computer engineer before leaving for other missions including  Cassini , which launched the spacecraft that taught us almost everything we currently know about Saturn. In 2022, however, he returned to Voyager because of a separate dilemma with the mission — and has remained on the team ever since.

"There are many of the original people who were there when Voyager launched, or even before, who were part of both the flight team and the science team," Linda Spilker, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory , who also worked on the Voyager mission, told Space.com in the This Week from Space podcast on the TWiT network. "It's a real tribute to Voyager — the longevity not only of the spacecraft, but of the people on the team."

To get Voyager 1 back online, in rather cinematic fashion, the team devised a complex workaround that prompted the FDS to send a copy of its memory back to Earth. Within that memory readout, operators managed to discover the crux of the problem — a corrupted code spanning a single chip — which was then remedied through another (honestly,  super interesting ) process to modify the code. On the day Voyager 1 finally spoke again, "you could have heard a pin drop in the room," Spilker said. "It was very silent. Everybody's looking at the screen, waiting and watching."

The rocket that launched Voyager 1 in 1977.

Of course, Spilker also brought in some peanuts for the team to munch on — but not just any peanuts. Lucky peanuts.

It's a longstanding tradition at JPL to have a peanut feast before major mission events like launches, milestones and, well, the possible resurrection of Voyager 1. It  began  in the 1960s, when the agency was trying to launch the Ranger 7 mission that was meant to take pictures of and collect data about the moon's surface. Rangers 1 through 6 had all failed, so Ranger 7 was a big deal. As such, the mission's trajectory engineer, Dick Wallace, brought lots of peanuts for the team to nibble on and relax. Sure enough, Ranger 7 was a success and, as Wallace once said, "the rest is history."

Voyager 1 needed some of those positive snacky vibes.

"It'd been five months since we'd had any information," Spilker explained. So, in this room of silence besides peanut-eating-noises, Voyager 1 operators sat at their respective system screens, waiting.

"All of a sudden it started to populate — the data," Spilker said. That's when the programmers who had been staring at those screens in anticipation leapt out of their seats and began to cheer: "They were the happiest people in the room, I think, and there was just a sense of joy that we had Voyager 1 back."

flight team of voyager 1

Eventually, Rasmussen says the team was able to conclude that the failure probably occurred due to a combination of aging and radiation damage by which energetic particles in space bombarded the craft. This is also why he believes it wouldn't be terribly surprising to see a similar failure occur in the future, seeing as Voyager 1 is still roaming beyond the distant boundaries of our stellar neighborhood just like its spacecraft twin,  Voyager 2 .

To be sure, the spacecraft isn't fully fixed yet — but it's lovely to know things are finally looking up, especially with the recent news that some of its science instruments are back on track. And, at the very least, Rasmussen assures that nothing the team has learned so far has been alarming. "We're confident that we understand the problem well," he said, "and we remain optimistic about getting everything back to normal — but we also expect this won't be the last."

The trajectory of the Voyagers.

In fact, as Rasmussen explains, Voyager 1 operators first became optimistic about the situation just after the root cause of the glitch had been determined with certainty. He also emphasizes that the team's spirits were never down. "We knew from indirect evidence that we had a spacecraft that was mostly healthy," he said. "Saying goodbye was not on our minds."

"Rather," he continued, "we wanted to push toward a solution as quickly as possible so other matters on board that had been neglected for months could be addressed. We're now calmly moving toward that goal."

The future of Voyager's voyage

It can't be ignored that, over the last few months, there has been an air of anxiety and fear across the public sphere that Voyager 1 was slowly moving toward sending us its final 0 and final 1. Headlines all over the internet, one written by  myself included , have carried clear, negative weight. I think it's because even if Voyager 2 could technically carry the interstellar torch post-Voyager 1, the prospect of losing Voyager 1 felt like the prospect of losing a piece of history.

"We've crossed this boundary called the heliopause," Spilker explained of the Voyagers. "Voyager 1 crossed this boundary in 2012; Voyager 2 crossed it in 2018 — and, since that time, were the first spacecraft ever to make direct measurements of the interstellar medium." That medium basically refers to material that fills the space between stars. In this case, that's the space between other stars and our sun, which, though we don't always think of it as one, is simply another star in the universe. A drop in the cosmic ocean.

"JPL started building the two Voyager spacecraft in 1972," Spilker explained. "For context, that was only three years after we had the first human walk on the moon — and the reason we started that early is that we had this rare alignment of the planets that happens once every  176 years ." It was this alignment that could promise the spacecraft checkpoints across the solar system, including at Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Those checkpoints were important for the Voyagers in particular. Alongside planetary visits come gravity assists, and gravity assists can help fling stuff within the solar system — and, now we know, beyond.

As the first humanmade object to leave the solar system, as a relic of America's early space program, and as a testament to how robust even decades-old technology can be, Voyager 1 has carved out the kind of legacy usually reserved for remarkable things lost to time.

The

"Our scientists are eager to see what they’ve been missing," Rasmussen remarked. "Everyone on the team is self-motivated by their commitment to this unique and important project. That's where the real pressure comes from."

Still, in terms of energy, the team's approach has been clinical and determined.

— NASA's Voyager 1 sends readable message to Earth after 4 nail-biting months of gibberish

— NASA engineers discover why Voyager 1 is sending a stream of gibberish from outside our solar system

— NASA's Voyager 1 probe hasn't 'spoken' in 3 months and needs a 'miracle' to save it

"No one was ever especially excited or depressed," he said. "We're confident that we can get back to business as usual soon, but we also know that we're dealing with an aging spacecraft that is bound to have trouble again in the future. That's just a fact of life on this mission, so not worth getting worked up about."

Nonetheless, I imagine it's always a delight for Voyager 1's engineers to remember this robotic explorer occupies curious minds around the globe. (Including my dad's mind now, thanks to me and Google.)

As Rasmussen puts it: "It's wonderful to know how much the world appreciates this mission."

D-Day 80th anniversary

D-Day 80th anniversary in Normandy

By Joshua Berlinger, Antoinette Radford, Shania Shelton and Kyle Feldscher, CNN

US Defense secretary gives thanks to veterans in comments marking 80th anniversary of D-Day

From CNN's Shania Shelton

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin gave thanks to the veterans in comments marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

"On behalf of the United States Department of Defense, I am here to give thanks, inadequate as that word may be. Eighty years later we thank the young Americans who took the beaches who helped liberate France, and who helped free this continent from Nazi tyranny," he said.

Speaking to the veterans, he said, "Victors of D-Day, we are humbled by your presence. The young Americans who fought through the clamor and the chaos of D-Day have grown old or left us. And whenever a veteran of D-Day is gathered to his maker in the fullness of time, after a long life lived in freedom, he wins a final victory over Hitler."

"Let us again thank the heroes of D-Day who kept freedom alive for us all. You saved the world," Austin said.

Macron to American veterans: "You left everything and risked everything for our independence"

From CNN's Joshua Berlinger in Paris

French President Emmanuel Macron delivers a speeach during a ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, France, on June 6.

French President Emmanuel Macron opened his speech at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, France, by lauding the American soldiers who landed on the shores of Normandy 80 years ago.

"We are linked by the grandeur of a people ready to die on a land that is not their own, but a cause that is theirs," Macron said.

He continued:

"You left everything, crossed the ocean and landed on the coast of France eight decades ago ... you left everything and risked everything for our independence, for our freedom. That we will never forget."

Biden acknowledges "critical alliances" while attending D-Day commemorations in France

From CNN's Donald Judd

U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron attend a ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, France, on June 6.

President Joe Biden reinforced the importance of the US’ alliances across the world, saying he was struck by the solemnity of the ceremonies honoring veterans who served on D-Day 80 years ago.

Biden told ABC News in an interview from Normandy that the sacrifice of soldiers was “astounding.”

“Now imagine what they had to come through — I was here 30 years ago, came in on a landing craft. You could see from out there what they saw here. The idea that they get off those boats, they get off those landing crafts, many of them died, sinking — you come across that beach, as long as it — it's just astounding. It's astounding,” he said.

“What it says to me is, how critical alliances are, how critical alliances are for our security,” Biden said.

The president has sought to contrast his vision of foreign policy with that of former president Donald Trump, who has struck a more isolationist tone, describing the NATO alliance as “obsolete,” and threatening to withdraw from the alliance.

D-Day reflects "very best of America's values," secretary says at 80-year anniversary

From CNN's Antoinette Radford in London

Secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission Charles Djou said Americans fight not for conquest, but for “humble values” at the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in Normandy, France.

Djou said D-Day reflected “the very best of America’s values.”

Djou said the D-Day memorial reminded Americans of the cost of war, and the price of freedom that Americans paid 80 years ago. He added that Americans would fight for freedom again “if necessary” in pointed remarks aimed at Russia and China.

“We remind all authoritarian dictators today that if necessary, we will pay that price again to ensure the success of freedom” he said.

Biden and Macron arrive for start of US D-Day commemoration

From CNN's Antoinette Radford

U.S President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron attend a ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, France, on June 6.

Veterans are on their feet for the start of the US D-Day 80-year anniversary commemoration at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, France.

US President Joe Biden arrived with first lady Dr. Jill Biden, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron.

Planes flew overhead as the ceremony began.

Gen. Charles Q. Brown on D-Day anniversary: "Our freedom is not free"

Gen. Charles Q. Brown, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said "our freedom is not free" when discussing the value of democracy and freedom.

"And democracy can stand on its own, but we've got to make sure we're prepared. And one of the things I've focused on is ensuring that we have fighting skill to deter future conflict," Brown told CNN's Christiane Amanpour, speaking in Normandy on the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion.

When asked by Amanpour if people at home understand how difficult the situation we're living through right now is, Brown said, "I have a sense it's coming along."

Wreaths laid on Normandy beach by British, Canadian and French leaders

France's Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, left, Britain's Prince William, the Prince of Wales, center and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pay their respects after laying a wreath during the Canadian commemorative ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the World War II D-Day Allied landings in Normandy, at the Juno Beach Centre near the village of Courseulles-sur-Mer, France, on June 6.

Prince William, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have laid a wreath on Normandy Beach.

The leaders walked to the beach where thousands of allied troops were killed in 1944 fighting for the liberation of France.

The laying of the wreath was accompanied by music from the Royal Canadian Air Force, which consists of troops from Ottawa, Quebec and Winnipeg.

King Charles will not attend the international ceremony for D-Day commemorations

From CNN’s Max Foster and Lauren Said-Moorhouse in London

Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended the UK Ministry of Defense and the Royal British Legion’s commemorative event at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer on Thursday morning.

Charles — on his first trip overseas since his cancer diagnosis — is patron of the Royal British Legion and Normandy Memorial Trust.

While the 75-year-old monarch made the trip to France, he will not be present at the international ceremony on Omaha Beach with other heads of state later on Thursday. Instead, in a planned decision, Prince William will represent Britain’s royal family.

The optics of seeing the Prince of Wales instead of his father will not be lost on those within the royal household. CNN understands that it wasn’t a deliberate orchestration.

Remember: King Charles only recently returned to public engagements after getting the green light from his doctors who were “encouraged” by his progress.

He is continuing to receive treatment and each engagement the 75-year-old sovereign carries out is being reviewed and adapted where necessary by his medical team to ensure his continued recovery.

It appears the King is continuing to follow his doctor’s guidance, which is behind his absence at the international commemoration on Thursday afternoon. A royal source told CNN that it was considered a step too far at this stage but that the monarch was delighted the Prince of Wales was representing the nation.

French Prime Minister: "France will never forget those who fell for her"

Prime Minister of France Gabriel Attal speaks during the Government of Canada ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, at Juno Beach, in Courseulles-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, on June 6.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said in a speech during the Canadian commemoration of the 80th anniversary of D-Day that France is eternally grateful for the sacrifices Canadian and other Allied soldiers made.

Speaking at Juno Beach, where 14,000 Canadian troops landed on D-Day, Attal said that France's gratitude is both "eternal" and "infinite."

"France will never forget those who fell for her. Never will she forget that on this sand, the blood of Canadian youth was spilled for our freedom," he said. "The memory of veterans of World War II will never fade away," Attal added. "Never will the flame of heroism weaken."

Attal also addressed his relative youth -- he is just 35 years old and became France's youngest-ever prime minister earlier this year -- and how his generation was able to enjoy a life without war due to the sacrifices of World War II veterans.

"I belong to a generation who has never known war. A generation whose parents didn't know war. A generation that grew up under the signs of freedom and liberty," Attal said. "History is a lesson for the future and today, more than ever, we need to hear and listen as war knocks once again on Europe's doorstop."

Devastation in Gaza as Israel wages war on Hamas

By Jessie Yeung, Sophie Tanno, Elise Hammond, Tori B. Powell and Aditi Sangal, CNN

Biden says in ABC interview that he thinks Netanyahu is listening to him

From CNN's Samantha Waldenberg

President Joe Biden said Thursday that he thinks Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is listening to him, arguing that — in his opinion — Israel has not gone into Rafah “full force," which the United States has been warning Israel against.

"I think he's listening to me,"   Biden said. "They were going to go into Russia — into Rafah  —  full bore, invade all of Rafah, go into the city, take it out, move, move with full force. They haven't done that,” he said in an interview with ABC News, initially saying “Russia” before correcting himself. “And what they've done is they've agreed to a significant agreement,” Biden said,   noting that Hamas still has to accept the proposal. “And look, it's being backed by Egypt, being backed by the Saudis,   being backed by the almost the whole Arab world. We’ll see, this is a very difficult time.”

Pressed on whether Netanyahu supports the ceasefire deal currently on the table, Biden said that the Israeli leader “publicly said he is” before adding that “we have to get a ceasefire.”

Catch up on the latest developments in Israel's war in Gaza

From CNN staff

Palestinians inspect the site of an Israeli strike on a UN-run school sheltering displaced people at the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza on Thursday, June 6.

At least 40 people died in the strike on the United Nations-run school in Nuseirat, medical workers at the nearby Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said.

The school was run by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) before it closed at the start of the war. UNRWA’s chief, Philippe Lazzarini, said the school was sheltering 6,000 displaced people when it was hit without prior warning to UNRWA or the people living there.

The Israeli military said the strike was a “ precise intelligence-based strike targeting dozens of Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists.”

Here's the latest headlines:

  • Threats to Gazans: More than 1 million people, half of Gaza’s population, are “expected to face death and starvation” by mid-July , a UN report warned.
  • Regional tensions: Israel and the Lebanese Iran-backed Islamist group Hezbollah are ramping up cross-border attacks after months of low-intensity fighting, prompting the Israeli military to warn this week that it is prepared to launch a large-scale attack on its northern border. Separately, Houthi leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, has vowed to continue attacking Israel and its allies, saying the Yemeni militant group will constantly be developing its military capabilities and will “ meet escalation with escalation .”
  • Hamas infiltration: An Israeli soldier was killed in what the Israeli military described as a failed Hamas infiltration attempt into Israel early Thursday. The IDF said Thursday it killed three militants who approached the border fence between Israel and Gaza and fired at Israeli soldiers. The militants were killed in Gaza, 300 meters away from the border fence, the IDF told CNN. The whereabouts of a fourth militant who participated in the attempt were unknown, the IDF said.
  • Ceasefire and hostage release deal: Egypt has received encouraging signs from Hamas on the latest ceasefire and hostages draft  from Israel  – one that US President Joe Biden took the unusual step of publicly detailing last week – a source familiar with the negotiations told CNN. Hamas is expected to respond to that proposal in the coming days, that source said. Meanwhile, a campaign group for relatives of the hostages held in Gaza has expressed “strong support” for the  call from the United States and 16 other nations  urging Israel and Hamas to “close” the hostage deal.

Israeli army kills 3 Palestinian Islamic Jihad members in West Bank raid, Palestinian health ministry says

From CNN's Jonny Hallam

Israeli forces fatally shot three Palestinians in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The deaths occurred amid reports of clashes between Palestinian militants and Israeli forces in different areas of the West Bank city of Jenin.

The Israeli military, under the direction of the domestic security agency, known as Shin Bet, said they were carrying out an operation in the city to "eliminate terrorists," according to an Israel Defense Forces statement.

The IDF said they had killed militants at "close range" and arrested a "wanted man" in the raid.

Israeli army bulldozers and armored vehicles were seen on the outskirts of Jenin camp, as an Israeli Apache gunship was seen flying overhead "attacking the area" to aid the operation, the IDF said.

In a statement mourning their deaths, Palestinian Islamic Jihad said that three of its members had been killed by Israeli forces on Thursday during the operation in Jenin.

Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) ambulance crews were seen on video recovering the bodies of two dead from the street of Jenin, one who had been fatally shot by Israeli forces while riding on a Vespa scooter.

At least eight people were injured, seven by gunfire and one who was run over by an Israeli military vehicle, according to the PRCS.

Since October 7, at least 531 Palestinians, including 132 children, have been killed, and more than 5,200 have been injured across the West Bank and Jerusalem by Israeli forces and Israeli settlers, according to the health ministry.

White House is asking Israel for more information about the airstrike on the UN school in Gaza

From CNN's Samantha Waldenberg

Palestinians inspect the scene after an Israeli airstrike on a school for displaced people run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza on Thursday, June 6..

The White House is asking Israel for more information on the airstrike on a United Nations-run school in central Gaza that reportedly killed at least 40 people.

The Biden administration does not have “independent verification of what exactly occurred” but it is talking to the Israelis to “try to get a better understanding," National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told CNN.

He added that Israel has a “right to go after Hamas” but that “how they do that matters.”

“They absolutely have a right to go after Hamas and we know Hamas shelters in civilian facilities and digs tunnels under houses and that kind of thing. But how they do that matters,” Kirby said. “We obviously don't want to see any civilian casualties whatsoever. So all of this is fresh and new and we're trying to get as much information from the Israelis as we can.”

A  CNN analysis  found that the airstrike at the UN school was conducted with a US-made weapon.

The Israeli military defended the strike . Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said Israeli intelligence believed that Hamas fighters who took part in the October 7 attack were operating from inside three classrooms. Earlier, another Israeli military spokesperson, Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, told journalists the military was not “aware of any civilian casualties.”

CNN cannot independently verify any of those claims from the Israeli military.

Qatar says it has not received Hamas’ response to latest ceasefire proposal

From CNN's Hamdi Alkhshali and Abeer Salman

Mediators have yet to receive a response from Hamas regarding the latest ceasefire proposal, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majid Al-Ansari said in a statement on Thursday.

The proposal, detailed by US President Joe Biden in a speech last week in the hopes of fueling progress in the negotiations, includes terms for a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange between Hamas and Israel, and is still under consideration by the group.

“The movement reported that it is still studying the proposal,” Al-Ansari said.

The joint mediation efforts by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States are ongoing, Al-Ansari added. He urged the public to disregard inaccurate media reports and to rely on reliable official sources, highlighting the sensitivity of the current negotiations.

UN chief condemns deadly Israeli airstrike on UN-run school in Gaza

From CNN's Richard Roth

UN Secretary-General António Guterres speaks at an event in New York on June 5.

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday condemned a deadly Israeli airstrike on a UN-run school in the Nuseirat Refugee Camp in central Gaza.

Among the dozens who died in the pre-dawn strike, reportedly 14 were children, according to Stéphane Dujarric, a spokesperson for the secretary-general.

Guterres "underscores that UN premises are inviolable, including during armed conflict and must be protected by all parties at all times," Dujarric said.

"The Secretary-General calls on all parties to respect and protect civilians, and ensure their essential needs are met, in accordance with international humanitarian law," Dujarric said. "He reiterates his calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held in Gaza."

Biden administration presses Middle East allies to threaten Hamas in push for a Gaza ceasefire deal

From CNN's Kylie Atwood and MJ Lee

The Biden administration has spent the last week pushing allies in the Middle East to make specific threats to Hamas, as part of an urgent campaign to prod the group toward accepting the latest  Israeli ceasefire and hostage proposal  that would pause the fighting in Gaza.

US officials have publicly called on the group to accept previous ceasefire proposals on the table as Israel and Hamas have engaged in months of back-and-forth negotiations, but there has never been an all-out pressure campaign marked by specific asks to individual countries as part of the Biden administration’s push.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has held almost a dozen calls with key players in the region since Friday and other top State Department officials have been intimately involved in the all-hands on deck effort.

White House Middle East Coordinator Brett McGurk traveled to Egypt this week and CIA Director Bill Burns went to Qatar in the hopes of  adding traction to the negotiations .

An initial response from Hamas on Wednesday to the most recent Israeli proposal, as publicly described by President Joe Biden last week, appeared to signal that the gaps may still be significant.

Still, the Biden administration believes there is an opportunity to close the deal, one US official said. Another source told CNN Thursday that Egypt has received encouraging signs from Hamas on the latest proposal, though they declined to detail exactly what those positive indications were.

Hamas is expected to respond to Israel’s proposal in the coming days, sources said.

Israeli military defends strike on UN school in Gaza that killed dozens: "We stopped a ticking time bomb"

From CNN's Jonny Hallam and Eugenia Yosef

The Israeli military defended its strike of a United Nations school in central Gaza on Thursday, calling it a "precise intelligence-based strike targeting dozens of Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists." Medical workers said at least 40 people were killed in the strike.

Late Thursday, Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said Israeli intelligence believed that Hamas fighters who took part in the October 7 attack were operating from inside three classrooms of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) school in Gaza's Nuseirat camp.

Hagari said the Israeli military has identified nine alleged Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters targeted in the strike. He said the IDF believes there were "about 30" Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters hiding inside the UN school but did not provide any further evidence or information as to how the IDF has come to this conclusion.

CNN is unable to independently verify the claim or the identities of those killed.

"The terrorists inside the school were planning more attacks against Israelis, some of them imminent. We stopped a ticking time bomb," Hagari said.

Hagari said Israeli forces, using aerial surveillance over several days, had delayed the strike on the school twice because they had identified civilians in the area.

"We conducted the strike once our intelligence and surveillance indicated there were no women or children inside the Hamas compound inside those classrooms," Hagari said, accusing Hamas of violating international law.

In addition to the at least 40 people who died in the strike on the UNRWA school, five people were killed in a strike on a residential house also in Nuseirat. Three people were killed in artillery shelling in Deir Al-Balah and four others were killed in artillery shelling in the Al-Maghazi refugee camp.

The US has not received a response from Hamas on latest ceasefire proposal, State Department says

From CNN's Jennifer Hansler

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller speaks during a briefing in Washington, DC in 2023.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the United States has not yet received an official response from Hamas about a proposal for a ceasefire and the release of Israel hostages.

President Joe Biden last week laid out a three-phase proposal that would pair a release of hostages with a “full and complete ceasefire,” a plan he said presented the best hope to bring peace to Gaza. The president characterized it as an Israeli proposal.

“We have been in conversation with our partners in the region, especially with the government of Egypt and with the government of Qatar, and those partners have been in conversations with the political wing of Hamas, but we have not yet received an official response to the proposal that's on the table,” Miller said Thursday. “I don't have an update on that. We have wanted to see a response as soon as possible.”
