Visby – a Swedish fairytale town on the island of Gotland

Ask any Swede about Visby and they’ll probably get a dreamy look on their face. It’s rare to find someone who isn’t fond of this enchanting medieval town, located on the island of Gotland, east of the Swedish mainland.

  • Visby is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Saffron pancakes are a local speciality.
  • Gotland is the largest island in Sweden.

Whether you’re looking for history, nature, culture, good food or just want to relax on the beach, the town of Visby , has it all. Located on the island of Gotland, in the Baltic Sea, this fairy-tale town is a national treasure. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, characterised as having “outstanding universal value.”

This well-preserved medieval Hanseatic town dates back to the 12th century and contains several remarkable church ruins from the period such as St Clemens, St Nicolai and Drotten’s ruins, and the St Karin church ruin with its high arches. Visby boasts several historic churches as well, including the Sankta Maria Cathedral built at the end of the 12th century.

Visby also has a well-preserved 3.5 kilometres long medieval ring wall (The Visby City Wall) with many of its original towers from the 1200s still intact. The wall encircles the centre of Visby and was initially built for protection against both foreign enemies and Swedish assailants from the countryside.

Visby culture – from Vikings to Pippi Longstocking

Along the streets of Visby are more than 200 buildings and homes dating back to somewhere between the 12th and 14th centuries. The Gotland Museum’s Fornsalen (Hall of Antiquities) contains a number of archaeological finds dating back to Viking times and the museum’s Treasury boasts the largest silver treasure in Europe – 67 kilos of bangles, bracelets and 14,000 coins. A visit here will help put the town’s long and fascinating history into perspective. If you’re eager for more, a guided tour with the museum’s knowledgeable guides gives you a chance to visit some of the ruins usually closed to the public.

The beloved Pippi Longstocking movies were filmed along the narrow streets of Visby and the original Villa Villerkulla can be found just outside the town, at Kneippbyn Resort. Another address, appreciated by Pippi fans and Instagrammers alike, is Fiskargränd. The picturesque alley with its cobblestones and winding roses is probably the most photographed street in Visby today. If you wish to explore Visby in the footsteps of Pippi Longstocking even further, the local tourist office provides free maps listing all Pippi locations in town.

With its natural beauty and ancient history, Gotland is a mystical and inspiring place to live that attracts many artists. Their handicrafts are sold in the local Visby shops. Gotland is particularly known for its wonderful ceramics and woollen items. The grey, wool lambskins from local sheep, are warm and decorate many Scandinavian homes.

Garden blooms and day trips outdoors

In addition to its long history and fascinating ruins, Visby is also known for its gardens, particularly the profusion of roses that bloom in the sunny summer months. In addition to the roses and overflowing flower boxes on Visby’s winding, cobblestone lanes, there’s a collection of roses at the 2.5-hectare Botanical Garden , which dates back to 1855. It also has a large collection of exotic trees and plants that flourish in Gotland’s mild climate. There’s no entrance fee for the gardens, which also contain a herb garden and a Gazebo Garden (an open-sided pavilion).

There is a bathing jetty by the beach walk in central Visby, and four beaches within just five kilometres. If you feel like going a little further afield, head for the popular Tofta Beach, located 20 kilometres south of Visby. Although Gotland is the largest island in Sweden, the distances are short and the landscape mostly flat, making Visby a good starting point for day trips by bike.

A hike to Högklint, seven kilometres south of Visby, will give you not only magnificent views over the town but also a treat through Södra Hällarna nature reserve with steep cliffs and caves, an ivy forest and rocky beaches.

Major events in Visby

  • Almedalen Week – 'Almedalsveckan': Swedish political parties, journalists, influential people and mere mortals gather in Visby to discuss politics and attend seminars, speeches and other political activities as well as some festive events. The Almedalen Week always takes place week 27.
  • Medieval Week – 'Medeltidsveckan': Every summer in week 32, the Middle Ages return to Gotland and the once-powerful Hanseatic city of Visby. Up to 40.000 visitors dress up in costumes and recreate life in medieval days with theatre, markets, crafts, tower games and music. It’s the biggest medieval festival in northern Europe and a lively experience for visitors of all ages.
  • Gotland Truffle Festival – ‘Gotlands Tryffelfestival’: A week-long dedication to the Gotlandic truffle and the finale of the Gotland Truffle Month which takes place from 13 October to 19 November. Visitors can expect seminars on truffles, a truffle market, truffle hunts, a truffle ceremony and special truffle menus at many restaurants in Visby.

The taste of Visby – from saffron pancakes to truffles

While Visby is at its liveliest in the spring and summer months, there is plenty to do at any time of the year, not least visiting its many excellent restaurants, bars and cosy cafés. As in the rest of Sweden, “fika” is a popular pastime. Gotland has its own brews of coffee and tea that are served with delicious homemade goods, such as the island’s traditional saffron pancake with berries and cream.

4 notable cafés in Visby:

  • Själsö bageri , a craft bakery a few kilometres outside Visby with stone-baked sourdough bread and mouth-watering cinnamon buns. They also have a bred truck at Östercentrum in central Visby.
  • Café Amalia , a cute café and long-standing favourite among locals. Serves healthy and homemade breakfast all day, decorated with edible flowers.
  • Ett rum för resande , a small and cosy café especially appreciated for the homemade pasta and generous opening times year-round.
  • S:t Hans , a summertime gem as this garden café is idyllically situated in the S:t Hans Church ruins.

The lime-rich soil of Gotland and a favourable climate contribute to plenty of fresh, local produce. If you happen to be in Visby in the early spring, asparagus will be on the menu in all forms.

Truffles grow on the island as well and if you’re a fan, you won’t want to miss the late autumn months, when truffles appear on restaurant menus and in shops. If you happen to be here in November, there are also tastings, truffle hunts and lectures arranged by the island’s truffle academy.

An abundance of lamb on Gotland means you’ll find lamb dishes served in many restaurants, along with tasty local sausages, venison and more. Smoked salmon, flounder and herring are also popular thanks to the strong local fishing traditions.

You might want to wash the food down with beers like Wisby Pils and Sleepy Bulldog from the local Gotlands Bryggeri – one of many breweries on the island.

Gotlands Bryggeri was founded in 1995 and has since then brewed some of the most beloved craft beers in Sweden.

Visby’s top restaurants

Visby is one of Sweden’s most restaurant-dense towns and many are open year-round.

For traditional Swedish dishes and local specialities like Gotlandic lamb, make a reservation at Värdshuset Lindgården . Their kitchen follows the farming calendar and serves up seasonal and local produce. After dinner, move upstairs to the Gin Room, where a large selection of Gotlandic, Swedish and international gin and tonic varieties are on the menu.

Freshly caught seafood is another Gotlandic speciality, best enjoyed at Bakfickan . This small and genuine restaurant has been serving fried herring and fish soup for over 25 years. Come for lunch or dinner but be early, during the busy summer weeks they only run drop-ins.

Most restaurants in Visby are scattered around or close by Stora torget (The Main Square). While some are spin-offs from Stockholm restaurants, highly appreciated restaurants like Surfers and Crêperi & Logi have done it the other way around – they started in Visby and now have branches on the mainland.

Visit our Gotland destination page for more breweries and top restaurant tips outside of Visby.

Most visitors come to Visby during the bustling summer months when the waters are warm and the island is in full bloom. However, the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are equally beautiful, just without the crowds. If you come in winter, you can expect tranquil streets, Christmas markets and maybe even snow. No matter what season you choose to visit Visby, you’ll surely be enchanted by this fairy tale town.

Visby on Gotland - things to do and see

Tips, attractions and map.

There's so much to experience in Visby town, located on the island Gotland in Sweden. There’s something for everyone to discover, regardless of age and interests. It’s easy to fall in love with this picturesque harbour town. Enjoy the laid-back feel of strolling along its cobbled streets and squares. Sit down at a café and simply watch the passers-by. Here are our top tips on highlights for those of you who want to see more and find enjoyable activities. Further down this page, you'll find a map where we've highlighted our top tips.

Attractions inside Visby's ring wall

The medieval part of the town Visby is encircled by a ring wall. The city wall and church ruins in Scandinavia's best-preserved medieval city are well worth a visit. They also explain why Visby is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For the best view, we recommend that you visit St Mary's Cathedral. The cathedral is on a beautiful site, and you can climb the steps above it to a vantage point with a wonderful view over the city and the sea. If you'd like to learn more about the history of the island and the city, you should head to The Gotland Museum on Strandgatan.

Almedalen Visby.jpg

Almedalen and the Botanical Garden

You should definitely visit the famous and very pretty Almedalen Park and enjoy the sunset on an evening stroll along the boardwalk. The picture above was taken on an early morning walk in Almedalen. Are you a lover of flowers and unusual plants? If so, we recommend a visit to The Botanical Garden, which has a stunning waterside location, just north of Almedalen.

Discovering Visby with children

There are lots of fun activities for the whole family in the inner city. You could visit the Kajsar Prison Tower in the ring wall, eat lots of ice cream, and enjoy Gotland's famous saffron pancakes with dewberry jam. At the harbour, you'll also find the popular Fenomenalen Science Centre, with a focus on technology and fun experiments.

Most young people would tell you that the best thing about Visby is how close it is to Kneippbyn. This resort – a favourite with children and families – is only three miles south of the city. Here you can visit Pippi Longstocking's Villa Villekulla and splash around at the big Summerland & Waterland. Open May to August.

Shopping, restaurants and entertainment

There are plenty of small shops, boutiques and handicraft workshops along the narrow alleyways inside the city wall. You'll also find a wide choice of restaurants and pleasant little cafés here. If you visit Visby during the summer, you mustn't miss the Main Square. There's a busy market here during the daytime and as evening falls, it transforms into the natural hub for the city’s nightlife, with all the restaurants, bars and nightclubs around the square.

Visby is one of the most remarkable towns in the Nordic countries . It is on the west coast of Sweden 's largest island Gotland in the Baltic Sea with about 23,000 citizens. Visby is known for the city wall, the Cathedral and many church ruins. In 1995 the old city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

During the Swedish summer, from mid-June to mid-August, Visby is crowded. It is one of the best party cities in Sweden in the summer. Many Visby residents leave during these hectic months and let their apartments to visitors. During the rest of the year, the atmosphere is quite different.

Understand [ edit ]

visby tourist information center

Visby is on the western shore of Gotland, and is the only city on the island. The old city centre is encircled by a medieval city wall. The old city has an oblong shape along the shore, measuring some 2 km in length and half a km in breadth. It is often called "the city of roses and ruins": roses thrive on the limestone island, and the city is filled with medieval ruins.

Around 900 AD, Visby became a hub for trading in the Baltic Sea, and it eventually became a member of the Hanseatic League . During the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries the city prospered, and several churches as well as a major defensive wall were constructed. Visby's long period of decline began in 1361, when the Danish king Valdemar IV conquered Gotland and held Visby for ransom, threatening to pillage the city if he did not get three beer barrels filled with gold and silver. In the latter part of the 14th century Visby became a nest of a pirate organization called "The Victual Brothers". The Danes regained control over the island in 1409 and construction of the major fortification Wisborg started two years later. In 1525 the city was burnt by occupying Hanseatic troops. Much of the city was never re-built after this, and many of Visby's ruins stem from this event. In the 17th century, Gotland became a part of Sweden rather than Denmark. In order to prevent Wisborg from falling into Swedish hands the castle was destroyed by Danish troops. In the latter part of the 19th century the city started growing due to industrialization and an emerging tourist industry, and eventually came to develop beyond the old city walls.

As the Pippi Longstocking movies were shot in Visby, and the original Villa Villekulla can be visited in Kneippbyn in the city outskirts, it is a great destination for Astrid Lindgren tourism . The city was also the model for the fictional setting of the Japanese movie "Kiki's Delivery Service".

Climate [ edit ]

Visby has an oceanic climate, with cooler summers and milder winters compared to most of mainland Sweden. Nevertheless, the climate is strongly influenced by continental air flows. Precipitation is relatively constant throughout the year, and fairly low for an oceanic climate.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ], by boat [ edit ].

From the Swedish mainland, Destination Gotland runs ferries from Nynäshamn and Oskarshamn to Visby. You can bring your car. Hansa Destinations operates a once-weekly ferry from Rostock . In the summer some Baltic Sea cruises also include Visby.

Visby Marina [ edit ]

There is a lively marina in Visby centre.

  • Visby Marina , ☏ +46 498-215-190 , [email protected] . Reception 08:00–21:00 . 170–460 kr for normal yachts depending on length and width, 300 kr for yachts 11–14m (36–46 ft) < 4m; electricity 54 kr for 10A . ( updated Oct 2017 )

Visby is some 35 nautical miles from Öland or the Swedish coast, some 60 from the Stockholm archipelago (Landsort), so a full day of sailing. There is little shelter except from the mainland and Gotland itself. The coast of Gotland is exposed, with only some harbours.

The port of Visby is tight and busy in the summer. Check the ferry timetables, listen on VHF 16, and adjust arrival and departure accordingly. Be alert and apply good seamanship.

The 250 berths are distributed between the inner harbour, the north breakwater and the fishing harbour to the right of the entrance. There is often a boat meeting visitors to assist in finding a berth. There are quays also for big vessels. A few berths can be booked, but mostly you just show up and will find or be showed a berth. At the big events, check the situation beforehand.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

The inner city ( Old Town ), which is located within the city walls, is small enough to be covered by foot. The rest of the city is easy to get around by bike and has plenty of good bike paths.

By foot [ edit ]

Visby is best enjoyed by foot, especially the Old Town, located within the city wall.

By bicycle [ edit ]

During the summer there are usually plenty of bike rentals, but they can be expensive, if you're staying for a longer period purchasing a used bike might be a cheaper option.

By bus [ edit ]

There are several bus lines going out to the rest of the island, check the timetable before heading out though.

By car [ edit ]

During the summer cars are not allowed within the city walls. There are parking options free of charge, though a small parking fee is usually required in the city center.

By taxi [ edit ]

Like the rest of Sweden, taxis can be expensive, and are best for short trips when you are unable to get around otherwise.

  • Taxi Gotland , ☏ +46 498-200 200 .
  • Taxi Kurir Gotland , ☏ +46 498-50 000 .
  • Din Taxi Gotland , ☏ +46 498-20 70 70 .

By sightseeing train [ edit ]

There are a few sightseeing "trains" - practically a couple of trailers with seats and roofs pulled by a vehicle making tours around the old town with an audio guide playing through the speakers. Tours take about 30 minutes and tickets typically cost 65 kr/person.

See [ edit ]

Note that many of the town's attractions are only open during the summer months, usually until Aug 30th.

Buy [ edit ]

visby tourist information center

There are only three ATMs in the old town and port area: one at Donners Plats just as you come up from the water front, one on Adelsgatan, and one on Stora Torget. The one on Stora Torget in the wall of the small grocery store with the hand-painted text saying "Uttagsautomat" is a minor sight in itself. Along the Östercentrum there are several others.

Most shops close at 17:00 on weekdays, 15:00 on Saturdays and are closed on Sundays.

Main shopping areas [ edit ]

  • Adelsgatan This is the major shopping street, and by far the most touristy. Don't be discouraged though, it has plenty of interesting shops selling small trinkets and local handicraft. If you venture off this street you'll get to see the beautiful alleys and the smaller streets, which are less crowded, and there are smaller shops hidden here and there.
  • Sankt Hans Quarter (Sankt Hansgatan) - some clothes and design shops
  • Östercentrum ( exit the old city through the Österport gate ) Modern pedestrian shopping district with most of the usual European retail outlets, as well as banks, pharmacies, and fast food joints. In this area you can find Systembolaget to buy some good local beer, and records shop to buy home some nice Swedish music.

Outstanding Universal Value

Brief Synthesis

The Hanseatic Town of Visby is a unique example of a northern European medieval walled trading town with a preserved and notably complete townscape and assemblage of high-quality historic structures. Together these elements graphically illustrate the form and function of this type of significant human settlement, which still prevails as a living town.

Visby lies on the Island of Gotland, about 100 km east of the mainland in the Baltic Sea. The settlement, dating from the Viking Age, was formed on a shore with a natural harbour, sheltered by steep cliff formations. Gotlandic merchants utilized it as a strategic point in trade within the Baltic Sea. They allied for the protection of their trading posts which developed into a federation or Hansa . By the 12th century Visby had come to dominate this trade, and all the commercial routes of the Baltic were channelled through the town. After the foundation of Lübeck in 1143, German merchants began to expand their sphere of interest into the Baltic Sea and settled in Visby. It became the only trading place on the island with the privilege of trading with German towns and hence the main centre of the Hanseatic League. During the 13th century, Visby changed from a seasonal trading place into an impressive metropolis, enclosed by a strong defensive wall and increasingly divorced from its rural hinterland. The wall imposed new restrictions on the Gotlandic traders creating tensions that led to civil war in 1288. German, Russian and Danish traders built stone warehouses in parallel rows from the harbour and the community expanded with guild houses, churches and residences. In the 14th century, Visby began to lose its leading position in the Hanseatic League due to plague around 1350 and invasion by the Danish army under King Valdemar Atterdag in 1361. Warfare and piracy in the 15th century and changed trading routes bypassing Visby severely affected trade on Gotland and the economy of Visby deteriorated. The end of Visby’s greatness came in 1525, when it was stormed by an army from Lübeck and the northern parts were partially burnt. In the 18th century Visby experienced a revival of trade and industry. Many warehouses were refurbished as housing and new buildings were added both on the ruins of earlier ones and on vegetable plots. The 19th century saw the construction of schools, a hospital, and a prison and the growth of a small shopping area on one of the main streets. The town began to expand beyond the medieval wall.

The ‘inhabited historic town’ includes the walled town and its immediate surroundings constituting an area of 105 ha. The urban fabric and overall townscape of Visby are its most important qualities. The well-preserved town wall, with its towers and gates, extends 3.4 km and is surrounded by dry moats and open spaces that together form a defensive network. Some of the limestone used as building material was quarried from here. Roads into the town through gates to the north, east and south, leading from the cliff to the harbour, date to the Viking era. The medieval street plan survives both above and below ground. Urban archaeology gives evidence to widespread building structures, streets paved with large limestone slabs and a sophisticated water and sewage system. The remains of over 200 warehouses and merchants’ dwellings are predominantly in Romanesque style. Medieval Visby had more churches than any other town in Sweden: 15 within the walls and two outside. These buildings reflect several building phases with Romanesque and Gothic features, and they served various functions – parish, guild, monastic and hospital churches. Many fell into decay after they were abandoned during the Reformation in the 1530s. Only St Mary’s Cathedral survives and is still in ecclesiastical use. A large amount of small vernacular wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries featuring horizontal plank construction used since the Viking period remain intact. They are found mainly in the eastern parts of the town and on the site of the former Visborg Castle.

Criterion (iv): The Hanseatic Town of Visby is an outstanding example of a North European medieval walled town which reflects with remarkable completeness its essentially late 13th-century form and function as one of the most important trading towns of the Hanseatic League between 1161 and 1360. This is reflected in the well-preserved town wall, street pattern, church ruins, medieval buildings and townscape.

Criterion (v): Visby is a characteristic example of a traditional human settlement that has evolved over time through continuous adaptation to the medieval form and function. The inhabited historic town has prevailed under the influence of socio-economic and cultural change. This has resulted in a townscape in which the medieval walled trading town has been retained with distinctive layers over time until the present day. Functional continuity is reflected in its structure as a county, diocesan, commercial and residential town.

The property includes the walled medieval town and the surrounding dry moats and open spaces. A significant proportion of the attributes are in good condition. The medieval urban plan is largely intact. The town wall has been subject to partial collapses over the years. The collapse of a section of the wall in 2012 led to a successful restoration and new knowledge about its state of conservation. The increasing use of the church ruins for events and activities requires the development of impact assessment and guidelines. On a building level, incremental change through alterations that disregard conservation principles results in a cumulative negative impact on heritage values. The visual integrity of the walled town and historic skyline is vulnerable as the town expands and develops. The functional continuity and structure of the town is vulnerable to the loss of functional diversity and traditional building skills. Certain key attributes are located outside of the property, e.g. the ruins of St George and Solberga monastery, the medieval gallows hill, limestone quarries and entry roads into the medieval town.

Authenticity

Visby is the best preserved North European walled town and example of a fortified commercial centre. It is the most complete of the early Hanseatic towns. The original form of Visby, displayed in its urban fabric and overall townscape, is its most important quality. The irregular street pattern and entry roads run from the cliff to the harbour, some with origins in the Viking era settlement. From its heyday as a Hanseatic trading centre, the limestone warehouses have maintained their dominance along three main streets parallel to the shoreline. The authenticity of the medieval building elements is demonstrated in shape and size, rectangular plan, and height and fabric. Subsequent layers of development have conformed to the medieval scale and town layout. The Gotlandic traditional lime production and use for stone, plaster and mortars have remained intact and play a crucial role in conservation and craftsmanship.

The town wall remains largely intact, and its high level of authenticity is exceptional. The well-preserved dry moats and open spaces surrounding the walled town form a fringe belt that accentuates and distinguishes the compact medieval town. Three parallel trenches in the northern parts of the wall are particularly distinctive. Twentieth-century urban planning took a Garden City approach to development beyond the wall, preserving considerable areas of open space with lower densities and strict control over building heights. While the medieval churches fell into decay, and lost their original function, the ruins are iconic carriers of architectural and historical significances that have remained more or less intact since the 19th century.

While Visby lost its function as a commercial metropolis during the 14th century, its urban continuity is still reflected in a living town with retail, business, residential, educational, cultural and tourist uses. The relocation of public authorities beyond the walled town has transformed its spirit of place as a vibrant office-based core into a largely seasonal residential area. Gotland and Visby are an attractive holiday destination and economically strong property owners are both an asset and a threat to the preservation of this environment.

The property ownership is mixed with public and private owners. The church ruins are owned and managed by the State, while St Mary’s Cathedral is owned by the parish. The town wall and its towers are primarily owned by the local authority and have traditionally been managed by the state. A small number of landmark buildings remain in local authority ownership although several have been sold due to privatization processes. The majority of the domestic houses and commercial properties are in private ownership. The statutory ‘detailed plan’ for the walled town of Visby together with the associated building code regulates preservation of the built environment and new development within the walls under the Planning and Building Act, for which the municipality is responsible. In addition, 257 building monuments are designated by the state under the Cultural Heritage Act, which also protects the archaeological remains of the entire property. The property is recognized by the state as an ‘area of national interest’ under the Environmental Code.

In February 2010, the municipal council approved a statutory detailed conservation plan for the whole World Heritage property. This plan includes regulations concerning preservation. It also includes statutory building guidance, primarily for property owners, but also for municipal public areas.

Management of the property rests with several organizations. Gotland Municipality is the coordinating organization, with a site manager, carrying the overall responsibility through the City/Regional Council. A World Heritage Studio brings together different functions and departments within the municipality concerning conservation and development. The state manages the town wall and the church ruins. The County Administrative Board is responsible for implementing the Cultural Heritage Act and has a supervisory role in conservation on behalf of the state. The World Heritage Advisory Council consists of a steering committee of three key organizations; Gotland Municipality, the County Administrative Board and Gotland Museum, as well as other stakeholders such as representatives of residents, businesses, tourism, property owners, research and education. A World Heritage Forum is held annually to facilitate public engagement and dialogue on specific issues. The management plan from 2003 is under review. Its objectives are integrated with the Development Plan for Visby 2025. Management of the town wall is presently being reconsidered. Negotiations are underway between the Swedish National Heritage Board, having traditionally been responsible for its maintenance, and the owner, Gotland Municipality. Successful future management of the town wall requires both long-term funding and a clear agreement between the authorities. A buffer zone needs to be demarcated to address development pressure in the vicinity of the property. The building of a new harbour for larger cruise ships requires a sustainable tourism framework. Processes of privatization, gentrification and increased tourism threaten the functional diversity and social balance of the town. A strategy for risk management needs to be developed, including a fire protection system.

The most interesting sights of Visby

Visby, the most preserved medieval city in Sweden and Scandinavia, is recognized as a World Heritage Site and is protected by UNESCO.

Visby street

Paved with cobblestone neat streets, fabulous houses made of wood and stone, an infinite number of ancient ruins and many roses in the ubiquitous flower beds – this can be described as Visby, which is sometimes called the city of roses and ruins.

Flows of tourists come here to see the most interesting sights, considered the pride of all of Sweden. The main city of the island of Gotland has quite a few interesting places, but several of them are included in the list of the most significant.

The first attraction is the fortress wall, built in the XIII century. It surrounds almost the entire old center, so it turns out the city in the city.

Fortress wall

This ancient wall was perfectly preserved, and now you can still see its former greatness. The length of the structure is 3.5 km, and its structure includes 44 watchtowers up to 20 m high. If you look at the wall from the sea side, you can see the Powder Tower that has grown into the ground, and from the north side – the Maiden Tower with grass sprouted among the stones. An old legend tells that in the Maiden’s Tower the daughter of the city jeweler was walled up alive, betraying her fellow countrymen because of her love for the King of Denmark, Voldemar IV.

Some towers have viewing platforms from which you can enjoy panoramic views of the island of Gotland and the city of Visby.

St. Mary's Cathedral

The second attraction on the list of Visby is the Cathedral of St. Mary. This magnificent building is located at Vastra Kyrkogatan.

The building of the cathedral was rebuilt many times, therefore, its architecture contains elements from different eras: a 17th-century ebony chair, a 13th-century marble baptismal font, and an exterior decoration of the 19th century. The cathedral is striking with beautiful domes made of smoked black wood.

Organ in the church of St. Mary

The Church of St. Mary is a truly unique attraction in Sweden. This is the only active church in Visby and the only active medieval church on the island of Gotland. Organ concerts are often held here, the choir performs.

Entrance to the cathedral is free; photographing is allowed inside.

Behind the cathedral there is a staircase leading to the hill – you can climb it and admire the breathtaking view of the sea, the red roofs of houses, the city wall. This is also a great opportunity to take original photos of Visby, especially a photo of the cathedral against the sea.

A small compact botanical park is located in the old part of the city of Visby, near the promenade. The park is bounded on two sides by a fortified wall, it has several entrances and exits, and the address is as follows : Tranhusgatan 21, Visby, Sweden.

Visby Botanical Garden

The founder of the garden is Karl Linney, who has a monument here. In fact, this monument in itself is a unique attraction of Visby: it is made of a whole elm trunk and looks very original and unusual.

In the garden there are many plants from all the continents of our planet – both simpler and exotic. Tulip tree, magnolia, mulberry, Chilean araucaria, numerous varieties of roses harmoniously coexist here.

Flowers in a botanical garden

Visby Botanical Garden is a great place for walks and picnics. Old stone benches and tables are installed here, there is a Chinese gazebo, and there are also lawns where you can lie down.

The park offers a beautiful view of the castle towers, and on its territory there is another attraction – the romantic ruins of the church, entwined with ivy!

Entrance to the park is free , you can visit it any day until 22:00 hours.

The next attraction of Visby is one of the best museums in Sweden (according to the Swedes themselves), the Gotlands Museum. In Visby, it is located at Strandgatan 14.

Treasures from Viking treasures found

Here are silver and gold treasures from found Viking treasures, runestones of the 5th-11th centuries, mummies, products of East German tribes, ancient Roman coins, evidence of a large-scale battle near Visby, paintings by the artist Ellen Ruusval von Hallville, household items of the inhabitants of Gotland.

You can see all these expositions on any day of the week from 10:00 to 18:00.

Exhibits at the Gotlands Museum

Ticket price: for adults 400 kr, family – 500 kr.

For more information about all the information about the museum and the exhibits presented in it, visit www.gotlandsmuseum.se/en/.

Another attraction, known not only in Visby, but throughout Switzerland, is located at Lummelundsbruk, Visby, Sweden.

Lummelundagrottan Cave

A visit to the cave is possible only with a guide. Admission for adults costs 150 CZK, for children from 4 to 12 years old – 75 CZK.

Before the tour begins directly through the cave, visitors are shown a film about the history of its discovery.

Stalactites hanging from the ceiling are absent, but the sound of the water of underground rivers is perfectly audible and springs beating from under the stones are visible. It will be especially interesting to visit this attraction for those who have not yet seen more impressive underground passages and grottoes.

In the cave of Lummelundagrottan

Excursions are carried out according to the following schedule:

  • Friday from 10:00 to 14:00;
  • from Saturday to Thursday – from 10:00 to 16:00.
By the way, the temperature inside the cave is +8 ° C, and the duration of the excursion is about 30 minutes. That is, in order not to dream only about how to get out to the sun as soon as possible, it is advisable to take a warm sweater with you.

Visby: possible accommodation

Uncle Joe's Twin Room

Sweden is the most expensive country in Europe, and the prices on resort islands are even higher. With accommodation on the island of Gotland, in particular, in Visby, there will be no difficulties – there are a rather large number of offers, but in the summer it is impossible to find housing for less than 100 €.

In general, for the money you can only settle in a double room of the hostel. For example, Uncle Joe’s and Visby Logi & Vandrarhem Hästgatan are popular among booking.com users.

Aparthotel Volontärgatans Lägenhetshotell

For 120 € you can rent a campsite outside the city, for example, Visby Strandby – there can accommodate 6 adults. At the 4 * Best Western Strand Hotel, which occupies a UNESCO World Heritage building, you can rent a double room for 160 – 180 €. For the day at the aparthotel you have to pay from 175 € – this price is requested at Volontärgatans Lägenhetshotell, located 1.5 km from the main square of Visby.

How to get to Visby

It is best to get to Visby from Stockholm – the distance of 200 km existing between these cities can be covered by ferry or plane.

To Visby from Stockholm by plane

From the capital of Sweden to Visby there are 10-20 flights per day, and you can fly from Arlanda and Bromma airports. The flight lasts 45 minutes.

The flight schedule is constantly changing, and some truckers serve this direction only in the summer season.

Ticket prices start at 70 €, but such numbers are very rare. As a rule, you have to pay 90-100 € for a flight.

There are several ports from which ferries go to Gotland, rich in many attractions. But the port closest to the capital of Sweden, from which the ferry to Visby departs, is Nynashamn.

Ferry to Visby

Ferries in this direction go 2-4 times a day, travel time is 3 hours 20 minutes. The schedule needs to be found out before the trip, as it often changes. It should also be borne in mind that there are ferries that exclusively transport passengers with a car and vice versa – only pedestrian passengers. You can find out this information at www.destinationgotland.se/.

It is also possible to buy tickets on the same site, and in the summer season this must be done in advance. Travel from the capital of Sweden to the island of Gotland to the city of Visby will cost 10-40 € – the price depends on the chosen place (in the cabin or in the common room). For children, students and senior citizens discounts are provided.

Nynashamn is located 57 km from the capital of Sweden, and from there it can be reached by train or bus. The train and bus station in Stockholm are located nearby. Both the bus and the train stop near the pier. Travel time is almost the same – 1 hour. Even the cost of tickets is comparable – about 20-25 €. So you can choose a transport, focusing only on personal preferences.

By bus from Cityterminalen

Buses from Stockholm leave from Cityterminalen and arrive directly to the pier at the port of Nynashamn. There are about 5 flights a day, in time you can come with a margin to any ferry. The timetable can be found at www.flygbussarna.se/en.

You can buy a bus ticket at the ticket office of the bus station.

Trains from the Central Railway Station of the capital of Sweden go to Nynashamn from 5:00 to 24:00 with a frequency of 30 minutes. Tickets can be bought in advance on the railway website www.sj.se/ or right at the station in the terminal.

Visby Weather Conditions

The city of Visby, however, like all of Gotland, is located in a zone of temperate marine climate. In summer, the air warms up to a temperature of +25 ° C, in winter – up to +7 ° C. As for precipitation, it falls about 500 mm per year (this is mainly rain and fog).

The Definitive Travel Guide to Visby, Sweden

By Katie Merrill , March 9th, 2015

The UNESCO World Heritage city of Visby on the island of Gotland deserves a place on the itinerary of any vacation to Sweden.  Here’s why: It’s one of the best preserved medieval cities in all of Scandinavia, yet as a destination, it’s virtually unknown outside of the Nordic countries. Beyond the rich and palpable history , this quaint Nordic seaside getaway has lots to boast: sprawling green spaces, stone walls and towers from centuries past, museums that do its rich history justice, fine Nordic cuisine, artisan shops and cafes, and stunning Baltic views. It’s no wonder it’s been Stockholmers’ go-to summer getaway for years . With the advent of more and more of the fancy city folk buying property on the island, this place is only getting hipper.  Head there now before the rest of the traveling world does. (I promise , it’s only a matter of time.)

The 100-mile-long island of Gotland

Photo by  helen simonsson  cc by.

Just half an hour by plane and three hours by ferry from Stockholm, a trip to Sweden’s most beloved island is a must for visitors to the capital who have a few days to spare. Rent a car there for the freedom to explore the entire 100-mile-long island of Gotland —worth it if only for the impressive rauks (natural limestone pillars that dot the coastline). Yet with half of the total population residing in Visby, that’s where you’ll find the most action.

A couple days in visby, photo by  *psycho delia*  cc by.

Got a couple of days in Visby? Here’s what you should do.

Get up early to stroll along the water on Snackgardsvagan to get your first view of the medieval city wall encircling the old town. Enter via Kiskarplan along the sea , where you’ll find yourself steps away from the well-maintained botanical gardens ( Botaniska tradgarden ). Stroll over its romantic foot bridges, smell the sweet rose and lavender, and educate yourself on the region’s botany. During the summer months, the gardens host regular musical performances .

Haven’t had enough parks? Picnic in the sprawling Almedalen , which served as the city’s harbor during medieval times.

Typically Swedish: Quaint and Hip

Photo by  peter lübeck  cc by.

Spend a few hours weaving through the town’s sloping, labirynthic streets, which are laid out this way to baffle intruders of eons past ( and present ). Each building is touched with exquisite archaic details –weathered wood and stone, whimsical color palates, and rose vines weaving every which way.

In a place this quiet and quaint, it’s hard to believe that it can be so hip — This is the Scandinavian standard—a refined, non-decadent celebration of the aesthetic. Visby is no exception.

The city of ruins

Photo by  jens dahlin  cc by.

Weaving within the city walls, you’ll see how Visby lives up to its nickname—“the city of ruins.” The most impressive are perhaps those of St. Catherine’s Church , constructed in the 13th century. Wrap your minds around that, Americans! It can get pretty packed with tourists in the summer months, so get there right at noon when it opens. The church—with its high, open stone arches—is one of those magical corners of Europe that gives you an authentic taste of human life in a bygone era . Do not miss it. St. Catherine’s church is located in the center of town at the Market Square ( Stora Torget ). If you’re hungry, pop into the adjacent Bakfickan , a cozy, popular restaurant known for its fresh and flavorful seafood options. Sit outside for view of the ruins. Don’t miss out on the other ruins of the small city—St. Hans, St. Lars, St. Drottens, St. Clemens, St. Gertrud, etc., etc. At sunset, visit the Visby Cathedral and walk up the Kyrktrappan (church steps) for the most stunning view of the town, its great stone walls, and the coastline it hugs .

An afternoon delight

Photo by  andreas ivarsson  cc by  .

If you’re into souvenirs, or even if you’re not, you should definitely check out the Kränku Tea Shop —for an extensive collection of local and foreign tea, spices, sauces, coffee, and candy, as well as many a toy, trinket, and kitchen item— each and every a pleasure to the eye .

When you’re tired of shopping, enjoy a mid-afternoon Swedish fika (coffee break) at the sweet Café Amalia just a few feet away. The cinnamon rolls ( Kanelbulla ) are to die for and the coffee comes with free refills! (They were so excited to tell the Americans.)

A trip through the ages, ice cream in hand

Photo by  per egevad  cc by.

A trip to Visby is incomplete without learning its fascinating history, easily achieved by a visit to the impressive Gotlands Museum , winner of numerous travel awards and certainly a highlight of my time there. It is simply one of the best historical museums you’ll ever visit.  Entrance is a  bit pricey, but if you’ve spent half a day in Sweden, you’ll not come to expect a bargain. Explore the museum’s four floors (extensive indeed for such a small city!) which follow the i sland’s history literally through the ages– Stone to Bronze to Iron to Viking to Medieval to present. You’ll even have the chance to try on a chain metal vest and imagine yourself fighting in the legendary Battle of Gotland against the Danes!

Celebrate the sea by spending your last night in Visby walking along the harbor ( Skeppsbron ). In the summer months, the walk can be improved by a stop at Glassmagasinet , Sweden’s largest ice cream parlor! Try the salty licorice flavor if you’re feeling particularly Swedish.

Holidays in Visby

Visby is Scandinavia's best-preserved medieval town. In fact, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995 and is characterized as having “outstanding universal value.”

Thanks to its maze of cobblestone streets, pastel cottages and colorful wildflowers, "the city of roses and ruins" (as it’s often called), is also one of Sweden's most photogenic destinations .

While some visitors prefer traveling to Visby during the busy spring and summer months, when the sea is warm and the island is in full bloom, others are more drawn to its quieter periods. Either way, Gotland's richly historical capital offers plenty to do at any time of the year and has something for everyone , whether you're looking for history, nature, culture, delicious food, or just want to unwind on the beach.

How to get to Visby

You can catch a ferry to Visby from Nynäshamn, Oskarshamn and Vastervik in Sweden, as well as from Rostock, in Germany. Check all info about  ferry routes and schedules to Visby  here!

What to do in Visby

The first thing you should explore when arriving at Visby is its medieval ring wall . Start at the northern gate and proceed southwest on your journey. You’ll end at Kruttornet, a gunpowder store at the oldest part of the wall.

Afterwards, head to Visby Cathedral and the medieval churches of the town - there are 15 inside the city walls and 2 outside. Walk along the fairy-tale town’s narrow picturesque alleys and make sure to pass by Fiskargränd, the most photographed street in Visby today.

Visiting the Gotland Museum’s Fornsalen (Hall of Antiquities) and the museum’s Treasury, which boasts the largest silver treasure in Europe, is another must-visit for history lovers ! Alternatively, stroll through Visby’s Botanical Garden and admire its exotic trees and plants. You can even go for a picnic there!

For magnificent views over the town, hike to Högklint, 7 km south of Visby, and for panoramic views of the Baltic Sea, walk along Strandpromenaden (the beach boardwalk), a 5 km walking and biking path that runs along Visby’s northern coast.
