Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Sweden is a party to the Schengen Agreement. Visit the  Embassy of Sweden  website for the most current visa information.

Traveling Through Europe: If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, you should be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement.

  • Your passport should be valid for  at least three months beyond the period of stay. If you plan on transiting a Schengen country, review our  U.S. Travelers in Europe page.
  • You will need  sufficient proof of funds  and  a return plane ticket .
  • For additional information about visas for the Schengen area, see the  Schengen Visa page.

HIV/AIDS Restrictions:   The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Sweden.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Terrorism : Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Sweden has been subject to terrorist incidents in the past and the potential for a future terrorist incident remains.  As in other countries in the Schengen area, Sweden’s open borders with its European neighbors could permit terrorist groups to enter and exit the country with anonymity. European governments are taking action to guard against terrorist attacks, but all European countries remain potentially vulnerable to attacks from transnational terrorist organizations.

For more information, see our Terrorism page .

Crime:  Sweden has a low crime rate, and most crimes involve the theft of personal property from vehicles, residences, and public areas. While armed violence against the public continues to be a rare occurrence, violent crimes, such as homicides and sexual assaults, can occur. The majority of violent crimes occur in Sweden’s larger cities, such as Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo. Organized crime groups have also committed armed acts against each other.

Pickpocketing and petty theft are common in and around major tourist attractions, especially Stockholm’s Old Town (“Gamla Stan”) as well as at restaurants, coffee shops, amusement parks, museums, bars, airports, and on public transportation.

Hotel breakfast rooms and lobbies attract well-dressed, professional thieves who blend in with guests and target purses and briefcases left unguarded by tourists and business travelers.

Do not buy counterfeit or pirated goods, even if they are widely available. Not only are counterfeit goods illegal to bring back into the United States, but if you purchase them, you may also be breaking local law.

Demonstrations  occur frequently. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
  • Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams : See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Sweden. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

  • romance/online dating
  • money transfers
  • bank overpayments
  • online relationships that evolve into requests for emergency financial assistance

Victims of Crime : U.S. citizen victims of crime, including sexual assault, should first contact local police authorities by dialing 112. Crime victims may contact the U.S. Embassy at +46 (8) 785-5300 after they have contacted local authorities.  Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting all crimes.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide information on  Sweden’s Crime Victim Compensation and Support Authority
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence : U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism : The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

There is no provision for bail in Sweden. U.S. citizens who are arrested may be held in custody until an investigation or trial is concluded, either of which can range in duration from a few days to a year or more.

Drug and Alcohol Enforcement: Swedish law enforcement authorities have no tolerance for illegal drugs, including marijuana. Marijuana of all forms, including CBD products, are illegal to bring into or possess in Sweden. Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking illegal drugs in Sweden are strict, and convicted offenders can face imprisonment, fines, deportation, and/or a ban from re-entering Sweden.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including prescription drugs, is considered a very serious offense. The maximum legal blood-alcohol level is .02% - much lower than in the United States. Swedish police often conduct alcohol tests on roads and highways. Drunk driving rules are strictly enforced and fines can be severe, including possible jail sentences.

Child Protection Laws: The treatment of children is taken very seriously in Sweden. All forms of corporal punishment of children are against the law, and any form of violence, humiliating treatment, or neglect may result in the child being taken away from parents by the Swedish authorities and placed into long-term care by Sweden’s social services and/or criminal charges being brought against the offending parent. Homeschooling is not allowed in Sweden, except under extraordinary circumstances.

Compulsory Military Service: In March 2017, Sweden reintroduced military conscription for men and women. Dual U.S.-Swedish citizens are also subject to conscription, although persons who have previously done military service may be excluded from the requirement and should contact the Swedish Ministry of Defense for more information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers: See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report  – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report  – see country reports
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Sweden.

See our  LGBTQI+ Travel Information  page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Sweden prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual or mental disabilities, and the law is enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is as prevalent as in the United States. Accessibility to public facilities and transportation in Sweden is extensive. The Swedish Government actively funds programs promoting disability access to streets, public buildings, stores, restaurants, and public transportation. For more information on accessibility in Sweden, visit the  Tourist Bureau ’s website.

Students: See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: See our travel tips for  women travelers .

Medical care in Sweden is comparable to that found in the United States. Non-residents are expected to pay their own medical costs in full.

For emergency services in Sweden, dial 112. Assistance in English is available.

Ambulance services are widely available.

For non-emergencies, you can visit a local medical center or clinic, called an “Akutmottagning” or “Vardcentral.” Be prepared to present your passport.

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept credit card payments. See our  webpage  for more information on insurance overseas. Visit  the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on the type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with Sweden’s  Medical Products Agency  to ensure the medication is legal in Sweden. Please note that local physicians may not prescribe the quantities or dosages of medication that a U.S. doctor would. Stringent Swedish customs regulations prohibit the shipment of drugs to Sweden. Most pharmacies (“Apotek”) are open during normal shopping hours, but major cities will have a 24-hour pharmacy.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended for international travel by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality: Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of local hospitals and health facilities here .  We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: Swedish roads are comparable to those in the United States, though secondary roads may be less heavily traveled. Road signs use standard international symbols and Swedish text. Many urban streets have traffic lanes reserved for public transportation only.

All vehicles on the road must have their headlights turned on, no matter the time of day. You must use snow tires between December 1 and March 31, and you should be experienced driving on ice and snow if you are going to drive in the winter.

You must use seat belts, and children under 135cm (4ft 5 inches) in height must be seated in approved child or booster seats.

Gas stations in rural areas can be far apart. Some stations are unattended and require a credit card with a chip to purchase fuel.

Slower vehicles should move onto the shoulder to allow faster moving vehicles to pass.

Traffic Laws: You can use a valid U.S. driver’s license while visiting Sweden, or as a resident in Sweden registered for less than one year, but you must be at least 18 years old to drive.

The maximum speed limit is 120 kilometers per hour (approximately 75 miles per hour).

Public Transportation: Public transportation in Sweden is the recommended way to travel within larger cities. Taxis are more expensive than in major U.S. cities. Most local residents use public transport in Stockholm, as parking can be expensive. The bus, train, and subway systems are considered safe. Cyclists are common on many roads, especially in urban areas.

See our  Road Safety page  or Driving in Sweden website for more information. Visit the website of Sweden’s  national tourist office  and  national transport administration  responsible for road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Sweden’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Sweden’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Sweden should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website  and the  NGA maritime safety information website .

Visa Requirements for Sweden

visa to visit sweden from usa

When it comes to planning your international vacation to Sweden , the first thing you'll need to ensure is that you have the right documents to legally enter the country, including passports and tourist visas. Citizens from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the U.K., Japan, and several other nations are able to visit Sweden with nothing more than a passport, as long as it doesn't expire for at least three months after you plan to leave.

Sweden is also a part of the Schengen Agreement , which allows for border-free travel between member nations. For travelers, this means threy no longer have to apply for individual tourist visas for each country and can instead pass through many in one trip. The Schengen member countries are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Any traveler who has a passport from a non-exempt country must apply for Schengen Tourist Visa in order to visit Sweden and any of the other Schengen Area countries. Likewise, anyone who isn't an EU national but wants to work, study, or live in Sweden must apply for a visa.

Schengen Tourist Visa

Many visitors to Sweden don't need a tourist visa to enter, but travelers from non-exempt countries must apply and be approved for a Schengen Tourist Visa before departing. The Schengen visa gives the holder all of the same rights as a traveler from a visa-exempt country, meaning they can travel freely around the Schengen Area for up to 90 days. It's important to note if your visa allows for multiple entries into the Schengen Area or just a single entry, especially you plan to hop around and visit non-Schengen countries on your trip (such as the U.K . or Ireland).

Visa Fees and Application

The process for submitting your application depends on what country your passport is from and what country you currently reside in. Sweden doesn't have embassies in every country of the world and even the countries that do have embassies often outsource their consular services, so use the Embassy of Sweden portal to find your home country and specific application procedure.

Whether you make your appointment at a visa processing center, a Swedish consulate, or a proxy consulate, the documents you need and the general process is more or less the same.

  • You'll need to submit the completed application form , a passport-sized photograph, a roundtrip plane ticket, hotel booking, travel insurance, and proof of funds.
  • Pay the visa fee of 80 euros, which is payable in the local currency and can usually be paid for with a credit card.
  • If your appointment is at a visa processing center, you'll likely have to pay an additional processing fee.
  • At the appointment, the consular officer will conduct an interview and take your fingerprints.
  • Schengen Tourist Visas are typically processed within 15 business days.

Anyone who is not an EU national and coming to Sweden for work must apply for a work visa before entering the country. In general, you must have a job offer before applying for a work visa, unless you're self-employed or starting a business venture in Sweden.

Work visas are granted for the duration of the work contract for a period of up to two years at a time and can be renewed if the work continues. The visa is valid for the specific job you were originally hired for and if you want to change companies or make another change, you'll need to apply for a new visa.

Applying for a work visa in Sweden is a relatively simple process that is done completely online, although it can be drawn out. If you have been hired by a Swedish company, the employer starts the process by submitting your personal details, work contract, and company information to the Swedish Migration Agency. If you're self-employed, you'll have to complete these steps on your own.

  • Once the Swedish Migration Agency receives your information from the employer, you'll receive an email to upload a scan of your passport and information about yourself and your family members (if they're joining you).
  • Pay the visa fee online, which is 2,000 Swedish kronor.
  • The waiting time for a response varies. Highly-skilled workers may hear back in a couple of months, service workers usually take six to eight months, and self-employed applicants take up to 18 months.
  • If the Migration Agency needs to follow up for more information, the processing time can be delayed even longer.
  • Once you're approved, you can immediately head to Sweden and complete the final steps in person at the Migration Agency office if you're from a visa-exempt country.
  • If you're approved and are from a non-exempt country, you must make an appointment at your nearest consulate or visa center to have your photo and fingerprints taken before receiving your residency card. The card is what allows you to enter Sweden.

Student Visa

Student visas are required for anyone not from the EU coming to Sweden to study for longer than 90 days. If your studies are less than 90 days and your passport is from a Schengen visa-exempt country, then you can just enter Sweden as a tourist without a visa. If you're from a non-exempt country, you'll apply for the Schengen Tourist Visa but mark that the purpose of your visit is "studies," (which conveniently also waives the 80 euro fee).

For those who will be studying in Sweden for a semester, a year, or for the duration of an entire degree, you'll have to apply for a student visa . You must have already been accepted into an accredited higher education program as a full-time student before you can apply for the visa. Once you have, the entire visa application process can be done completely online, using the same documents as you need for other visas plus a letter of acceptance into the program. Student visa fees are 1,500 Swedish kronor.

The processing time for student visas generally takes one to three months unless the Migration Agency needs to follow up for additional information. If you're from a visa-exempt country, once you receive a favorable decision you can travel to Sweden and complete the process to receive your residency card from the Migration Authority office. If you're from a non-exempt country, you'll have to go to the appropriate office in your home country to have your photo and fingerprints taken. Once you receive the physical residency card, you can travel to Sweden.

Family Visa

If you are a Swedish citizen, EU citizen, permanent resident, or have been granted a work visa or certain student visas, you are eligible to bring certain family members with you to live in Sweden. The only types of family members who are officially permitted are your same or opposite-sex spouse, domestic partner, or cohabitating partner, as well as your children under the age of 21. However, if you can demonstrate that another family member is dependent on you for care, you can also petition to bring them (an elderly parent, for example).

If the sponsor is a citizen or a permanent resident of Sweden, then the joining family members will also obtain permanent residency. If the sponsor has been granted a work visa or a student visa, then the family members are only allowed to stay as long as the sponsor is legally residing in Sweden.

The exact process varies based on the residency status of the sponsor and the type of family relation, so carefully read over the most up-to-date information from the Swedish Migration Agency. However, the basic framework of what steps need to be taken are more or less the same. Regardless of the relation, the applicant cannot already be living in Sweden and must apply from their home country.

The application process is started online and can be done by the applicant or by the sponsor if granted power of attorney. You'll need to upload documentation that shows the relation between the sponsor and the applicant—such as a marriage certificate—that's been authenticated by local authorities and translated into Swedish or English. The application fee is 2,000 Swedish kronor for adult applicants and 1,500 kronor for applicants under 18.

After the application is submitted, the sponsor will be emailed a questionnaire about their income, living space, and ability to maintain and support the applicant. Once the information is reviewed, the applicant must schedule an appointment for an interview at the nearest Swedish consulate in their home country. The total processing time varies depending on the individual circumstances, but can range from a few months to longer than a year.

Visa Overstays

Overstaying your visa is a serious matter and the consequences can affect your future travel not just in Sweden, but in the entire Schengen Area. All tourists are allowed to visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period, so grab a calendar and go to the date you expect to return home. From there, go back 180 days—about six months—and add up every day you were in a Schengen country. If that number is 90 days or less, you don't need to worry.

If that number is over 90, then you're overstaying your visa and the potential consequences include a fine, detention, deportation, or even being banned from returning to the Schengen Area.

Extending Your Visa

If you're in Sweden and you're required to stay longer than 90 days, you must apply for a visa extension or a visitor's permit. The visa extension is a one-time decision to extend your visa for an additional 90 days, while the visitor's permit can continue to be renewed for additional time if necessary. Regardless of the type of extension you request, you'll need to justify it with extraordinary circumstances, such as a global pandemic, humanitarian crisis, natural disaster, medical emergency, etc.

Since the visitor's permit can be renewed, it offers more flexibility during tumultuous situations, but it also costs nearly five times the price. The one-time extension costs 30 euros while the visitor's permit costs 1,500 Swedish kronor, or roughly 145 euros (the currencies are different because the extension is considered a Schengen process while the visitor's permit is granted by the Swedish government). You can apply for either extension at the nearest Swedish Migration Agency office.

Sweden is part of both the European Union and the Schengen Zone , making it easy for travelers from those regions to visit. For travelers from other parts of the world, the rules are quite straightforward, but it’s important to review the requirements well in advance to avoid any difficulties.

What you need to know about visas in Sweden

Citizens of the European Union may visit Sweden without a visa and may live, work and study in Sweden without a residence permit. Travelers from outside the EU may visit the Schengen Zone, including Sweden, for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your stay in the Schengen Zone.

Even if you do not need a visa, you may still be asked to show a return ticket valid within 90 days, a hotel booking or other confirmed accommodations, and proof of enough funds to support yourself during your stay.

Staying longer in Sweden

If you are not an EU citizen and wish to visit Sweden or Schengen for up to 90 days, you may need a visa. Citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and numerous other countries are exempt from this visa requirement for stays of up to 90 days.

Travelers who need a visa include citizens of most Asian and African countries, as well as a scattering of countries in eastern Europe and Latin America. Visit the Schengen Visa Policy web page for a handy world map showing visa requirements or consult the Swedish government’s list of countries whose citizens need visas to enter Sweden.

Don't leave your Sweden visa arrangements to the last minute

If you need a Schengen visa, you should apply well in advance, but no earlier than six months before your trip. If your trip involves more than one Schengen country, you should apply for a visa through an embassy or consulate of the country where you will spend the most time. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your stay, be issued within the last 10 years and have at least two empty pages. You also need to have emergency medical insurance valid for the duration of your stay. Full information about required documents for applying for a visa is available on the Swedish Migration Agency’s website .

Six-month visitor permits for Sweden

If you intend to stay in Sweden for more than 90 days you will need to apply for a visitor’s permit through the Swedish Migration Agency, unless you are an EU citizen. If you are already in Sweden you can usually apply for a visitor’s permit to extend your stay for another 90 days. If you know in advance that you intend to stay more than 90 days, you can normally apply for a six-month visitor’s permit before your trip rather than entering on a tourist visa for the first 90 days.

To apply your passport must be valid for at least 90 days beyond your planned visit, and you must be able to support yourself during your stay in Sweden and have a return ticket or sufficient funds to buy a ticket home. Other conditions may apply depending on your nationality and the purpose of your extended stay. See the Swedish Migration Agency’s website for full guidelines for applying for a visitor’s permit.

Entering Sweden from another Schengen country

When you enter Sweden from another Schengen country you typically do not have to pass through any sort of immigration check, but you must still have a valid passport or national identity card available to present to the authorities if asked. There is a border check on the Øresund bridge, so if you are entering Sweden from Denmark by road or train you must have your passport or national ID card ready for inspection. Other border checks may be implemented occasionally under special circumstances.

Airplane on Europe map

If you're planning a trip to Europe, the Schengen Area is likely on your itinerary. This visa zone covers 29 European countries, allowing passport-free travel across borders for up to 90 days. Understanding the Schengen Agreement and the Schengen visa countries can help you explore Europe with ease and clarity. In this guide, I’ll cover the Schengen Area countries, visa requirements, and essential travel tips.

In this article

What is the schengen agreement, which countries are part of the schengen area, list of schengen visa countries, european countries that are not part of the schengen zone, is a schengen visa always necessary for traveling in the schengen zone, benefits of traveling in the schengen area, travel requirements for schengen visa, exploring the schengen area by country.

  • Schengen Visa FAQs

The Schengen Agreement is a foundational pact that created Europe's border-free travel zone. Signed on 14 June 1985, in the small Luxembourg village of Schengen, this agreement originally included only five European countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Over time, more countries joined, and today, the Schengen Area includes 29 countries that participate in border-free travel and harmonized visa policies.

The Schengen acquis defines the legal framework that allows for short stay visas, primarily aimed at tourists and business travelers. Those holding a Schengen visa can enter any of the Schengen visa countries and move freely within the Schengen Area without additional border checks, except in specific situations where temporary internal border controls may be introduced for security reasons.

The Schengen visa countries includes 29 European nations which are as follows:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Together, these countries make up the Schengen Area, where travelers can move freely without regular border controls.

  • Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • Switzerland

Not every European country is part of the Schengen Area, despite being part of the European Union. Several EU countries, including Ireland , have chosen not to join the Schengen Area and maintain their own border checks. Additionally, non-EU microstates such as Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City are not Schengen members but maintain open borders with Schengen countries.

Yes, Indian citizens require a Schengen visa to visit countries within the Schengen Area for short stays. This visa allows for up to 90 days of travel within any 180-day period across the 29 Schengen visa countries. Indian travelers must apply for this visa through the embassy or consulate of the main Schengen country they plan to visit. With a valid Schengen visa, they can freely move within the entire Schengen Area without needing additional visas for each country.

Traveling within the Schengen Area is convenient due to the lack of internal border controls. For tourists, this means fewer border checks and smoother, uninterrupted travel across borders. Additionally, Schengen visas streamline the process by eliminating the need for separate visas for each country on the Schengen visa countries list.

Obtaining a Schengen visa involves a few essential requirements which are as follows:

  • Completing a visa application form : Available at embassies or consulate websites of any Schengen visa country.
  • Passport validity : You need a passport with at least three to six months of validity remaining beyond your planned departure.
  • Travel insurance : Insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000.
  • Proof of accommodation and financial stability : Often required to show your ability to cover expenses during your stay. Have at least INR 3,00,000 in bank account to avoid rejections.

Processing times can vary depending on the embassy, country of application, and other factors. Generally it may take up to 15 to 25 working days.

To give you a taste of the Schengen countries, here are a few words about some of the popular destinations in Schengen area:

  • France : Known for Paris, the city of lights, beautiful wine regions, and charming villages, France is a top destination in Europe.
  • Italy : With its rich history, famous cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice, and the scenic Amalfi Coast, Italy has something for everyone.
  • Germany : From the historic sites in Berlin to the beautiful castles of Bavaria, Germany offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition.
  • Netherlands : Known for its canals, tulip fields, and progressive culture, the Netherlands is a favorite among travelers.
  • Spain : From the beaches of Barcelona to the museums of Madrid, Spain provides a rich cultural experience.

The Schengen Area is a prime example of European integration, enabling millions to travel freely across multiple nations without border restrictions. For visitors, understanding the Schengen visa countries list and requirements can simplify travel plans and open doors to some of Europe’s most captivating destinations. Whether you're drawn to the culture of Italy, the landscapes of Norway, or the history of Greece, the Schengen visa offers seamless access to explore Europe.

By preparing thoroughly and respecting visa guidelines, you can make the most of your European adventure across these 29 Schengen visa countries.

A Schengen visa is a short-stay visa that allows travelers to move freely within the 29 Schengen Area countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. It’s required for Indian passport holders who wish to visit any Schengen country for tourism, business, or family visits.

With a single Schengen visa, you can visit all 29 Schengen countries without needing separate visas for each one, as long as you stay within the allowed 90-day period.

The Schengen acquis refers to the collection of legal measures that govern the Schengen Area, covering aspects from visa policies to border control rules.

If you’re visiting more than one Schengen country, apply at the embassy or consulate of the country where you’ll spend the most time. If your stay is split equally, apply at the embassy of the country you’ll enter first.

It’s recommended to apply at least 3 to 6 weeks before your travel date. Schengen embassies allow applications up to 6 months in advance, ensuring enough time to process the visa.

Required documents include a valid passport with at least three months of validity post-departure, travel insurance with €30,000 minimum coverage, proof of accommodation, a detailed itinerary, and proof of financial means (bank statements, salary slips). Each country may have additional requirements.

A standard Schengen visa for Indians costs around €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12. Fees may vary slightly by country and are typically non-refundable, even if the visa is denied.

Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances, like medical emergencies or unforeseen events, and must be requested at the relevant immigration authority in the country you’re in. Approval is rare, so it’s best to plan your stay within the initial 90-day limit.

If you do not need a visa to travel to Sweden

If you are from a country where you do not need a visa to travel to Sweden or to another Schengen country, you must still meet a number of requirements. Border police will verify that you have met these requirements before you are allowed to enter Sweden.

Requirements to enter Sweden without a visa

Even if you do not need a visa to travel to Sweden you must have

  • a passport that is valid at least three months after leaving Schengen
  • a return ticket that must be valid within 90 days
  • a written invitation from your family member or friend that you will be staying with or a booking confirmation if you are staying at a hotel
  • money for living expenses and the trip home.

Sweden requires you to have 450 SEK for each day of your visit to Sweden. The amount can sometimes be lower, for example for younger children, if you pay for the cost of room and board in advance or if you are staying with family or friends. You need to show that you have enough money to cover your expenses by showing for example a bank account statement or a document where the person who invited to Sweden promises to pay for all costs during your visit.

It is also recommended that you arrange for individual medical travel insurance that will cover any costs that may arise in connection with acute medical treatment, urgent hospital care or transportation to your home country for medical reasons. The insurance should cover costs of at least 30,000 EUR and applies to all Schengen countries.

Contact your embassy before you leave on your trip

If you have any questions before your trip you can contact an embassy or a consulate-general. Visit the website of the embassy or consulate-general for information before your visit.
