Morgan State marching band heads to France to commemorate D-Day in first overseas performance

O n Tuesday, Kyra Scott will be one of 110 students traveling to France in a first for Morgan State University’s marching band: an overseas performance.

On June 7, the marching band, known as the Magnificent Marching Machine, will perform and march in the D-Day 80 Normandy Parade along Omaha Beach . The parade will take place the day after D-Day, which marks the invasion of the beaches at Normandy by Allied troops , including from the U.S., that led to the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

For Scott, a senior who just wrapped her first year playing quints on the drum line for the Magnificent Marching Machine, the trip will feel especially personal. Scott said she’s excited to represent America in a parade honoring the 80th anniversary of D-Day and those who fought in World War II.

“It’s a big deal for me because my dad came from the armed forces. I have a lot of uncles who are in the armed forces as well. And also my great grandfather fought in World War II,” Scott said. “So it’s just a way for me to go out and honor him and my dad.”

The band was invited by Music Celebrations International in November 2022, said Luke Wiscombe, the national director of sales and marketing for the organization.

“The Magnificent Marching Machine has a national reputation that would be a worthy representative of Maryland and the United States,” Wiscombe said in an email. “[The band] is the first HBCU to participate in this parade, and we are thrilled to provide these deserving musicians not only the lifetime memories this trip will undoubtedly provide but also the solemn honor of paying tribute to the men and women who served and sacrificed to liberate Europe.”

Morgan State University President David Wilson said it took him “all of five minutes to say yes.” He added that it was a perfect chance for Morgan, which he said is a top generator of U.S. Army leadership with a strong ROTC program.

Between students, faculty chaperones, band staff and alumni, over 200 representatives of Morgan will make the trip to France, Wilson said. The total cost of the trip came to around $400,000, which Wilson said “pales in comparison to the experience of the students and the branding of the university.” Wilson said the money came from a variety of sources, such as band fundraising, the university’s marketing and branding department and private donations, including $100,000 from Honda and $5,500 from Wilson himself.

In addition to their parade performance, the band will play at a wreath laying ceremony at the Normandy American Cemetery and in a parade at Disneyland Paris. Morgan State’s Director of Bands Jorim Reid Sr. said the band also intends to do some “park and play” performances, but those times and locations are to be determined as Paris is also gearing up for the Summer Olympics.

When Reid received the parade invitation, he immediately thought of his own grandfather, a Black soldier who served in World War II. More than a million African American men and women served in the U.S. military during the war.

Reid said that growing up in a military family, he watched lots of World War II movies and documentaries — but he didn’t see himself reflected back.

“I think it’s good to represent to our students that they can see us over there in France, and then they can see themselves as well,” Reid said, “and know that we’re representing those that look like us that were unable to come home.”

The band has been incorporating the music they’ll play abroad, such as “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa, into their performances all year. Tory James, the band’s head drum major and a senior, said while practices have required a lot of work, he thinks the band is ready.

Although both James and Scott have some hesitations — marching in the summer heat in uniform while heaving large drums is a daunting task — they and their bandmates are excited for the opportunity.

“Somebody’s always in our group chat just talking about this trip,” Scott said.

Some, like James, have never been out of the country; some have never even flown on an airplane. But they’re all ready to travel and take in sites like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe during supervised tourist activities.

Wilson said it’s a goal within the university’s strategic plan to get the percent of students studying abroad into the double digits. He wants students to see the world and come armed with the education and experience they need to change what doesn’t live up to their expectations.

“Our belief is if they are going to grow up and be expected to lead the world — of which I clearly expect my Morgan students to do — they must understand the world,” Wilson said.

Over 200 students graduate from Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - It was the end for high school and the beginning of a new chapter Tuesday for students at the Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy.

More than 200 students from 16 counties came together in person on June 4 for commencement at the Warton Center on Michigan State University’s campus. The head of the school, Kendall Schroeder, said 60% of the graduating class attended the virtual academy all four years of high school.

“Now they’re coming together maybe for the first time and having that connection that they’ve already built somewhere else in classes,” said Schroeder. “Now they get to connect face to face, and this is one of the most special times we can celebrate.”

“It’s very exciting,” said Nora Yaklic, a graduating student. “I have some friends I am seeing for the first time in person, which is a big deal. The same for the teachers; it’s very exciting, it’s very good.”

Nora said she is going to Oakland University to study business.

News 10′s wishes the best of luck to her and the rest of the graduating class!
