Vinicio Capossela

Phantasmagorical singer-songwriter, poet, writer, but also illusionist, showman and cultural operator. He debuted in 1990 with the album All'una e trentacinque circa, which followed the path of Paolo Conte and Tom Waits; it was awarded Targa Tenco Opera Prima, an award he would be given four other times in the following years for the Best Album. After the first albums - which are Modì (1991) and Camera a sud (1994) - rooted in jazz and South American rhythms, came the telluric Ballo di San Vito with Marc Ribot and Evan Lurie, the explosive Liveinvolvo with the balcanic brass band Kocani Orkestar, a witness of two years spent touring.

During this period of his early career, he took part in theater shows, working with Paolo Rossi's company, such as “Pop e Rebelot” (1993) and “Milanin Milanon” (1994). Also with Paolo Rossi, Capossela did his TV debut during the program “Scatafascio” (1997-1998), for which he signed the homonymous song. In 2000 he released the pataphysique album Canzoni a Manovella (2000). After that, he shifted his attention to more universal themes, often inspired by classical literature, from Melville to Céline, Dante and Homer. In 2003, after two years of intense touring, he released his first collection called L'indispensabile, which features also Capossela's first cover song ever, Si è spento il sole.

Works such as Ovunque Proteggi, Da Solo and Marinai, Profeti e Balene have been staged as total works of art. Ovunque Proteggi, in particular, has been ranked at #2 in Mojo's Top Ten World music albums in 2006. In 2007, he played a few special concerts called Fuggite, amanti, amor, interpreting Michelangelo's sonnets, a project that is still unreleased. It featured the cello player Mario Brunello. In 2004 he wrote his first book, Non si muore tutte le mattine (Feltrinelli), which gave rise to a shadow play performance and that inspired the Radiocapitolazioni, broadcasted on Radio 3. In 2009, it was followed by the second book, written with his friend and poet Vincenzo Costantino “Cinaski”: In clandestinità (Feltrinelli).

He dedicated several works to Greece and rebetiko music: the album Rebetiko Gymnastas, recorded in Athens (Preis Der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik for the Best Worldmusic album in 2013), a documentary made with the film maker Andrea Segre and the book Tefteri, published by Saggiatore and translated in Greek and Spanish. In 2013, he also started a new project with Banda della Posta, an elderly but still wild bunch of frontier serenaders, between Buena Vista Social Club and the Pogues; a concert in which you could find marriage music, anarchist songs and Sixties’ standards like Adriano Celentano.

2015 and 2016 are very important years for Vinicio: his book Il Paese dei Coppoloni (finalist at Premio Strega and winner of Dante Alighieri Society's Prize), the docufilm Nel Paese dei Coppoloni and his studio album Canzoni della Cupa, are the result of a deep elaboration about Irpinia, a personal journey into folk music, with the participation of Los Lobos, Calexico, Flaco Jimenez and national icons like Giovanna Marini and Antonio Infantino. In 2013 Capossela created and became the artistic director of one most original festivals in Italy, that mixes social engagement, music and attention to the environment: its name is Sponz Fest, and it takes place during the final week of August in Irpinia (Campania).

Still in 2015, to celebrate his first twenty-five years of career, Capossela started a long and important tour called Qu'Art de Siècle, with unique shows in Italy and in Europe. In 2017, he was awarded the Premio Tenco for his career. In 2019, he released Ballate per uomini e bestie, an album that focuses on Middle Ages and the plagues of current times, followed by 2020 Bestiario d'amore, a four songs EP whose title-track is the translation and adaptation of a poem by the 13th century French troubadour Richard de Fournival. Bestiario d'amore was performed on tour with the Bruno Maderna Symphonic Orchestra (conducted by Stefano Nanni) in 2021, whereas in 2020 Capossela toured with Vincenzo Vasi for a show called Pandemonium. Capossela's latest work is the book Eclissica, published in 2021 by Feltrinelli; it focuses on Capossela's last fifteen years of career and life.

In the summer of 2021, he performed Bestiale Comedìa, a show inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy, not only in Italy, but also in Bruxelles and in Dubai, at Expo's Italian Pavillion. He performed there again in March 2022. After a show in Barcelona in September, the final months of 2022 were the richest of abroad touring: in November he embarked for the Balkangiro, a series of concerts in the Balkan area (Albania, Northern Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo); then in December he performed his Personal Standards in European capitals such as London, Paris, Berlin, Lisbon and Bruxelles. He is now about to release a new album.

72nd sanremo festival.

On 4th February 2022, Vinicio Capossela performed at Sanremo Festival with the singer-songwriter Giovanni Truppi and Mauro Pagani. The three performed a song by Fabrizio De André called «Nella mia ora di libertà». 

The song has been released as a single too. You can listen to it through all streaming platforms.

Ex-pònz at Dubai Expo

On 13th March 2022, Vinicio Capossela performed for the second time at Dubai's Expo; he performed a show that was focused on the themes of culture and cultivation, a theme that introduced the next edition of Sponz Fest. For this reason, the show was called «Ex-pònz”, a wordplay between Expo and Sponz. 

This concert focuses on earth, crops and land drawing inspiration from folkloristic heritage and bringing the outskirts of Italy into the spotlight, within the context of a universal exposition dedicated to sustainability. The title, "EX-ponz", refers to an experience that turns ten years old this year, the "Sponz Fest", an event held annually in the irpinian area of Italy. The tracks of the Earth Concert are mainly taken from the albums "Canzoni della Cupa" and "Ballate per Uomini e Bestie", which shed light on the relationship between humans, earth and animals.

Along with Capossela, the other musicians were Alessandro "Asso" Stefana, Victor Herrero, Andrea Lamacchia, Mikey Kenney and Peppe Leone. 

Volterra22: I want to dream of a man

On 2nd April 2022, Vinicio Capossela performed in Volterra, tuscan capital of culture, in two particular sets: during the first one, that started at 3 p.m., the artist and his musicians were hosted by Armando Punzo's Compagnia della Fortezza for a special show, because the music accompanied the acting of convicted actors. At night, Capossela performed his own concert too. 

Except for Capossela, two other artists joined the event: Giovanni Truppi, who sang «Nella mia ora di libertà», and Mariangela Capossela, who is going to work on the stories and the people who lived in the former psychiatric hospital.

Bibliopedic concert

On 23rd April 2022, at Taneto di Gattatico's Fuori Orario, historical club where the classic Christmas concert is held, Capossela performed a peculiar show. Its title «Bibliopedic concert» revealed the nature of the repertoire. In fact, he chose some of his own songs that come from the books that he loves the most. Every song has been introduced by a short reading of the book that inspired it.

Ariosto Festival

On 8th and 9th August 2022, in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (LU), took place a festival called «Di qua di là di su di giù»; it was dedicated to the figure of poet and governor Ludovico Ariosto, who lived between XV and XVI century. Vinicio Capossela was the art director of the festival. 

Rolling Sponz Review

Between July and August 2022, Vinicio Capossela performed the show Rolling Sponz Review, an extralarge concert with some of the musicians that are the soul of Sponz Fest, the summer festival held in Irpinia (Southern Italy) and directed by Vinicio Capossela.

Io, da suo grande e giovane fan l'ho sempre amato fin da quando ero molto piccolo. I suoi concerti sono qualcosa di unico e spettacolari, riescono sempre a darti emozioni straordinarie da quando lo vedo dal 2017. Di artisti come lui non c'e ne sono. Per questo è un grande. Forse, per me il migliore artista italiano contemporaneo. Ne vale veramente la pena, perchè ogni volta ci sorprende sempre con qualcosa di nuovo e assurdo.

Ballate per uomini e bestie tour teatrale

E' stato un concerto bellissimo. Quella sera Vinicio è stato un grandissimo. Performance magnifica,eseguita benissimo, band fantastica e scenografia stupenda. Aveva anche una bellissima scaletta con tanti nuovi brani dell'ultimo album e c'erano anche i suoi piu grandi successi. Emozione unica, davvero unica. Spero di rivederlo presto in concerto. E' troppo un grande.

Concerto spettacolare. Il poeta ha saputo trasmettere emozioni vibranti e contrastanti. E stato divertente ma anche profondo e commovente. Superbo! Lorchestra ha fatto da contorno eccezionale ma lui è un artista dai mille volti che riesce sempre a sorprendere e incantare.

VINICIO CAPOSSELA: una serie di concerti in Europa

VINICIO CAPOSSELA Una serie di concerti in Europa in occasione dei 32 anni dal suo debutto

32 anni fa usciva  “All’Una E Trentacinque Circa ”, il primo disco di V inicio Capossela .

L’album, nato sotto l’egida del grande  Renzo Fantini  e tenuto a battesimo da  Francesco Guccini , vinse la Targa Tenco e segnò l’inizio di un felice e caleidoscopico percorso artistico.

Dal 6 al 13 dicembre  Vinicio Capossela  sarà impegnato in un tour internazionale che toccherà le città di  Londra, Bruxelles, Berlino e Parigi  con  Personal Standards ” , un concerto nel quale il cantautore ripercorrerà la storia dei brani degli album dei primi 20 anni della sua carriera. Ad accompagnarlo in questo viaggio  Enrico Lazzarini  (contrabbasso),  Antonio Marangolo  (sassofono)  Giancarlo Bianchetti  (chitarra)  Zeno De Rossi  (batteria).

Gli esordi espressi nel revival di motivi innalzati a personal standards. Intorno all’una e trentacinque il club si rianima coi personaggi della vecchia mitologia. Pioggia e moquette, flashback, nottambuli, nomi esotici di pianobar nell’epico vagabondare tra anima e parole, cupa mondanità e sensazioni memorabili. “Un mondo pieno di guai, affollato di guitti stralunati, strade chiassose e vecchie macchine”. Avventurieri di frontiera tra confidenze, segrete proposte e rese in grande stile. Vita rifratta, geografia intima di una fuga tra i riflettori. Tra malinconia e illusioni, la seduzione dello swing. Riff e versi si scoprono cult sotto la lima del tempo.

All’una e trentacinque circa 

All’una e trentacinque circa il Pjazza di Bellaria Igea Marina si svuotava e diventava la culla dei nottambuli e dei lunatici, quelli che non si arrendono mai e, se si arrendono, lo fanno in grande stile. Erano loro il primo pubblico delle canzoni di questo disco, registrate su una cassetta in un pomeriggio d’agosto del 1989. Pochi mesi più tardi, la cassetta finì nello stereo di  Francesco Guccini  in via Paolo Fabbri 43, e da lì nelle generose mani di  Renzo Fantini ,   manager e produttore dello stesso Guccini e di Paolo Conte. Un anno dopo la registrazione di quella cassetta, sempre ad agosto, il disco prese vita e divenne una sorta di film noir. Un  Round midnight  girato nell’Emilia dei CCCP e di Pier Vittorio Tondelli. 

Alla fine dell’estate 1990, una sera, nel locale  Il posto  di Verona c’era anche Enrico De Angelis, che segnalò Capossela ad Amilcare Rambaldi  per invitarlo al  Premio Tenco  di quell’anno. «Vinicio seguiva stilisticamente una strada che noi amavamo moltissimo: quella di Tom Waits e di Paolo Conte. […] Ci colpì il fatto che quel modo di scrivere e cantare […] avesse trovato un continuatore». Nel 1991 il disco fu premiato con la Targa Tenco per la migliore opera prima, in ex aequo con  Passa la bellezza  di Mauro Pagani. 

Così quell’orario di esibizione si è trasformato in un disco odoroso di pioggia e moquette. Lampi biografici, canzoni scritte ad anticipare la vita quando ancora ci si faceva pace. Asfalto, lamieroni, locali epifanici come l’Escandalo o il Corallo. Istantanee disarmanti che rendono epico il viaggio, in cui è il suono, più che il senso delle parole, a dare corpo al mondo. «I suoni fanno da sfondo a un mondo immaginario. Un mondo pieno di guai, affollato di guitti stralunati, strade chiassose e vecchie macchine». I suoni sono quelli di  Antonio Marangolo, Jimmy Villotti, Ellade Bandini, Enrico Lazzarini. 

Tutto è partito da una melodia al pianoforte che ricordava una canzone di Dylan,  I Was Young When I Left Home . Le parole ce le ha messe la vita con le sue fratture, e quel soffio ha allargato tutta la geografia. È l’epica del pianobar.

Closure In Moscow Announce ‘The Singularity’ Tour

It seems that fans of Melbourne’s Closure In Moscow just can’t get enough. Days after wrapping up their Supreme Turbo Facilitator Tour (selling out all but one of the shows) the popular five piece have announced their Singularity Tour featuring headline dates in all capital cities.

The tour marks the beginning of what plans to be a super massive travel cycle for Closure In Moscow as they head across to the U.S on the Warped Tour playing all 44 shows.

Support on the tour is from good buddies, Secrets In Scale. Tickets for all shows are on sale now.
