Welcome to the boston freedom trail self-guided tour.

Walk in the footsteps of Revolutionary War heroes with this self-guided audio tour of Boston’s Freedom Trail! Get the facts behind the story of Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride, relive the fight for American Independence, and much more—journey back in time to historic Boston in the days of Paul Revere and Samuel Adams. As you walk the Freedom Trail, you’ll learn about everything from the Boston Common to the USS Constitution.

Walk the Boston Freedom Trail

Your tour starts at the center of the city at Boston Common. Here, you’ll turn back the clock all the way to the city’s founding in the 1930s, then learn about the first murmurs of independence from Britain. You’ll learn about the Stamp Act Riots, the Liberty Tree, and more! Then you’ll head to the historic State House (complete with a dome of real gold!) and find out about the time capsule placed there in 1795.

On your way to the Park Street Church (a landmark loaded with history), you’ll stop by the memorial to Robert Gould Shaw, famous for his role in a different war: The Civil War!

Then, return to the 1700s and learn what led Britain to levy such harsh taxes against the colonies and how those colonists responded. Then, at the Granary Burying Ground, you’ll have the chance to visit the graves of famous figures like Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Paul Revere!

After that is King’s Chapel, the first Anglican church in Boston, which dates all the way back to 1754! Even older is the Latin School, up next, founded in 1635. Benjamin Franklin, Robert Paine, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams all studied here! Then it’s on to the Old South Meeting House, where you’ll get the many ins and outs of the true story behind the famous Boston Tea Party protest.

Next is the Old State House, where the Declaration of Independence was first read to Bostonians! Then you’ll head to the site of the infamous (and oft-misunderstood) Boston Massacre and get the truth behind that fateful night.

Following a stop at the famed marketplace of Faneuil Hall (where you’ll find just about any kind of refreshments you need), you’ll see the beautiful Rose Kennedy Greenway. It may not be an official stop along the Freedom Trail, but this gorgeous urban park is worth a look, regardless!

Continuing on, you’ll get a great look at the historic Custom House, one of Boston’s most iconic structures, before reaching Paul Revere’s house, perfectly preserved since his famous Midnight Ride. Past that is the Old North Church, where Revere famously asked for “one lantern if by land, two if by sea.”

The next stop is almost impossible to miss—the USS Constitution! This enormous ship, nicknamed Old Ironsides, is enough to make the trip worth it all on its own. Here, you’ll get familiar with some of the old warship’s most nail-biting battles.

Finally, you’ll arrive at the Bunker Hill Monument, memorializing a pivotal Revolutionary War battle. Your tour concludes here, but you can also take the Freedom Trail & Bunker Hill Monument bundle to learn about the revolution’s first major battle in depth.

What You'll See

Boston common.

Explore America's Revolutionary past at Boston Common. This large green has been part of the city since colonial times. Start the tour at the Visitor Center and find the red-brick path. The path takes us back to the 1700s to set the scene.

Massachusetts State House

Our red-bricked Boston Freedom Trail tour begins at the Massachusetts State House on Boston Common! History, architecture, and a golden dome make this building stand out! We will stop in front of the State House to discuss Revolutionary War heroes and colonial history.

Park Street Church

The Boston Freedom Trail continues from the State House and Shaw Memorial. We learn that the battle for American independence was one domino in a chain of dominos across continents and wars.

Granary Burying Ground

This brings us to the truly ancient Granary Burying Ground. Established in 1660, this is only Boston's third-oldest burying ground. Can you imagine what's changed in the last 400 years?

The Latin School

From the Granary, we'll check out the King's Chapel along the way and pause in front of the Latin School. This historic site contains a number of fun statues to pose with (including a donkey!) and quite a lot of rich history to dive into.

Irish Famine Memorial

A few steps down from the Latin School, we'll find the Irish Famine Memorial. Here we'll jump a bit later into Boston history and talk about the new wave of immigrants after the revolution. We'll learn about the hardships they faced and overcame... and where these communities are today.

Old South Meeting House

The Old South Meeting House is across from the Irish Famine Memorial. Here, we'll be transported back in time to one of the most fateful events leading up to the Revolutionary War—the Boston Tea Party.

The Old Corner Bookstore

As we continue along the Boston Freedom Trail, we'll learn more about the Tea Party and the Sons of Liberty who were behind it. We'll also pass the historic Old Corner Bookstore while walking and dive into it's connection to colonial Bostonians.

Old State House

Our red-brick road finally brings us to one of the most popular stops along the Boston Freedom Trail: the Old State House. We'll pause here to identify key architectural features and learn about it's significance (and long history!).

Boston Massacre Site

We are here to see the site of the infamous Boston Massacre! But was it a massacre? Or just a rowdy riot, as the British said? We'll dive into the thrilling tale while standing at the very spot where history unfolded. We'll also learn about Crispus Attacuks, an honored American hero.

Faneuil Hall

We'll follow the Boston Freedom Trail to another popular resting spot: Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market! First we'll explore the site's fascinating history and then explore it's huge range of food options!

While walking the red-bricked Boston Freedom Trail, we will learn about the historic Haymarket and the new and striking Holocaust Memorial in front. We will learn about each site as we head to another popular stop.

The Paul Revere House

Our path leads to Paul Revere's House, another Boston Freedom Trail stop! The truths and myths of Paul Revere's "Midnight Ride" and Henry Wadsworth-Longfellow's poem about it will be revealed here.

Old North Church

From Paul Revere's House, we'll make our way to the Old North Church. This is the iconic site where the "one if by land, two if by sea" lanterns were lit, silently signalling the British troops' movements to colonial revolutionaries.

Copp's Hill Burying Ground

From the Old North Church, we'll follow the Boston Freedom Trail farther up to the historic Copp's Hill Burying Ground. This historic cemetery in Boston's North End is older than the Granary... but only by a year!

USS Constitution vs. the Guerriere

Crossing the bridge and entering the Charlestown Navy Yard are our final stops. We will see the impressive USS Constitution and learn about her epic battle against the Guerriere. We will study War for Independence naval battles at this historic site.

Bunker Hill Monument

We will finish the Boston Freedom Trail at the Bunker Hill Monument, commemorating the Battle of Bunker Hill. We will walk around this hill to understand the brutality and intensity of this epic battle for freedom. This is the final stop on our Boston Freedom Trail tour.

Get the free audio tour and go at your own pace

There's a free MP3 audio tour available from Viator that you can load onto your phone and walk the freedom trail at your own leisure. Starting at Boston Common and stopping for lunch at Faneuil Hall, the trail took us about five hours, though we did not make it into any of the attractions in Charlestown. The Granary cemetery is well worth a visit. It appears that there are many tours in there so you can easily stand in the crowd and listen to a bit of history on the famous Bostonians buried there. Nearby is another church and cemetery that is a popular stopping point, though when we walked by there was a service so we did not go in. We did visit all three of the Freedom Trail museums, starting with the Old South Hall. Unless you are set on seeing it all I think you can give this one a pass. There were some displays of historical information and a nice gift shop, but it was a quick visit even for me, and I usually dawdle in these places for ages. The State House has another museum, and this one is the one of the two that I would visit if I had to choose one. It offered a good overview of the history of Boston during that era. I've heard people say to skip Paul Revere's house but I thought it was more than worth a visit. If you've ever been to a National Trust site in the UK it's a bit like that, though there are not many rooms. It only costs $3.50 so not a pricey visit. There were no facilities (washroom, gift shop) of any kind as they are doing massive renovations out in the yard. The staff were eager to talk about the house and Paul Revere (again, like a National Trust site!). Give yourself time to get over to Charlestown to see the view from Bunker Hill. I didn't allocate enough time and missed getting in by 15 minutes.

After hearing many people raving about Boston and especially its historic sites, this was a big let down. The trail leads you through different neighbourhoods of Boston, although only few historic bits remain. There's a dire lack of information and they assume that you know everything about every battle in American history. Might be great for US visitors, but they could work harder to make the walk interesting for foreign visitors (yes, we know about the rough milestones in American history, but we are visting your country to learn more than "General so and so was amazing, we are so proud of him bla bla bla").

Trail was quite long but very interesting and lots of points of interest and places to rest if tired!

Wonderfully historic & informative path. Boston is BEAUTIFUL city and it was awesome to walk around, especially on the cobblestone/ brick sidewalks. So cool!

The freedom trail was very interesting and fun. It is not a long walk in between stops so you're not in the cold for long. There are many interesting museums on the trail but only three of them require you to pay admission. (Paul Revere's House, The Old State House, The Old Meeting House) It is definitely worth it to go to these museums. They do have a package where you can buy admission to all three which I suggest doing. It really was a great way to see Historic Boston. However, I don't suggest hanging around the Boston Commons for a long time or at night because there are some dangerous people, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't visit because it is beautiful. Also if you are trying to catch a cab, it isn't easy because most are full and cannot stop in certain places. If you want to catch a cab go to the Hyatt Regency or Omni parker House because they are usually lined up there and it will save you A LOT of time.

If you are only in Boston for a short time, this would be my number one recommendation. Of course, I am a teacher and complete history buff, but I think it can be enjoyed by all. I have been to Boston numerous times, and still love visiting all these historic spots.
