ART FOR ALL: “I have always wanted to visit this place at least once ever since I was a child, so I’m happy that my dream came true,” said Ayahiko Kondo as he stood on stage in the auditorium of the Louvre Museum in Paris.

The Japanese illustrator was one of five creatives to receive an award on Tuesday at the prize-giving ceremony for the UT Grand Prix, Uniqlo ’s global T-shirt design competition, held for the first time at the famed Paris museum.

Nine winners were selected from 9,269 entries worldwide based on works from the collection of the Louvre, which has had a partnership with Uniqlo since 2021 that also includes support for educational programs. T-shirts featuring the top designs were due to go on sale at a pop-up store in the museum from Thursday until Aug. 31.

The Grand Prix went to Hinz Pak, a U.K.-based artist who originally won the prize 15 years ago. His winning design showed the Mona Lisa wielding chopsticks, with the Louvre Pyramid designed by I.M. Pei rendered as an onigiri.

“I learned about Mona Lisa before learning art . She is the best piece for everyone to start their art journey,” the Hong Kong-born artist said in his acceptance speech. “Artwork is like everyday food: it’s simple, delicious and nutritious. Printing the selected works on T-shirts is perhaps the simplest way to spread art and creativity.”

Koji Yanai, senior executive officer of Fast Retailing , Uniqlo’s parent company, said the Japanese high-street giant is committed to making art more accessible .

“We would like to continue to make art for all and bring the Louvre experience to as many people in the world as possible. I believe this art can truly be enjoyed by everyone,” he said.

Stéphanie Hussonnois-Bouhayati, director of external relations and communication at the Louvre, said the T-shirt was an effective way to popularize art.

“It’s something everyone has in their wardrobe and it can also be a manifesto,” she told WWD. “Our collaboration with Uniqlo is about giving people access to culture, and the T-shirt is a gateway.”

'Tour of lies' stretches imagination in Tokyo's Asakusa

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- On a busy afternoon in Tokyo's Asakusa district, a tour guide leads a small group to a sidewalk outside a branch of clothing chain Uniqlo, where he produces a tape recorder.

"The company Minato Shokuhin, best known for their Japanese ginger ponzu sauce, used to be based here. You might remember the jingle," he says, pushing play. After the tune ends, a man in his early 20s volunteers a memory of his grandmother humming it. "It was very popular with her generation," the guide agrees, and the tour moves on.

But their shared nostalgia for a discontinued condiment is, in fact, a collective lie. Minato Shokuhin never existed, its jingle was created by an enthusiast making up tunes for nonexistent brands, and the reminiscences of the younger man, getting into the spirit of the tour, are bogus.

The group of 16 being led through Tokyo's old downtown district are on the "Uso no Tsua," translating as "lies tour," an unexpectedly successful guided trip along a 2-kilometer route in one of Tokyo's most-visited neighborhoods.

The tour, which comes as AI-generated text, images and videos raise fears about what information can be trusted, reassures attendees they can "take in information knowing that everything is a lie that they do not need to check."

Its creator and leader Shigenobu Matsuzawa, a professional guide and former comedy storytelling event organizer, lies for almost the entirety of the tour's runtime.

Among the claims made when Kyodo News attended were that the tree where tour participants gather is the visual inspiration for the tree emoji on the Android smartphone operating system, and that the tourist drivers of go-karts roaring up and down the Kaminarimon-dori are commuters from central Japan's Gifu Prefecture.

Matsuzawa has gone further than speaking untruths, creating a three-dimensional parallel universe of lies by drafting in local businesspeople to make outlandish claims and employing a gallery of fake products and brands like a cursed cookie and plastic bags from a fictional defunct convenience store.

Attendees are encouraged to offer their own complementary lies to his stories, and competitive sections see participants riffing on themes including their made-up takes on what Japan's oldest pun is.

The tour went viral on social media months before its first staging in early March, and even stoked speculation the idea itself was a lie. Amid strong demand, its initial March to May run has been extended multiple times to now end in August, with around 400 people having experienced it in its first six weeks.

Soma Ito, a 17-year-old travel blogger who signed up despite his suspicions the "lies tour" could be a hoax, said he would "probably never forget the feeling of relief when it turned out to be real."

"Normally when traveling, I just think about how beautiful or amazing something is, but this time was different. I had to consider what I think is true, what's a lie," he reflected. "It made me think, lying isn't necessarily always bad, and that it can help us feel all sorts of different emotions."

Matsuzawa says he was shocked by the level of interest in an idea he admits "started with me telling my friend I'd do it as a joke, maybe to a couple of people."

The 41-year-old runs the company, Maniana Tours, with his wife and other enthusiasts. Their other tours offer guides to what genuinely exists, but with a twist -- one involves offering participants a deep dive lasting the full 90 minutes into the stories and history behind a single location such as a park.

Asked why he thinks his latest idea captured imaginations, Matsuzawa says he takes a wider view on what can be defined as a "lie."

"If you think about it, almost all movies and novels are fiction, so you could call them lies," he said. "It means a lot of things people enjoy earnestly aren't true. Giving tours, too, reminds me the line between the truth and falsehood isn't so clear -- local legends, for example, might be lies but they're stories we choose to share," he said.

He added that giving the tour has changed his view on how people engage with lies.

"Speaking to many of the people who come, they seem to enjoy telling lies with their friends and family as a kind of hobby. I've realized many treat lying as the first step in creativity," he said.

"We all have that creativity, that drive to make things up, and I think that helped create the reaction to the tour. It showed me there are people out there who want a space to tell untruths."

C hallengers Boys Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist Reunited in Loewe at the Met Gala 2024

Hold onto your churros: Challengers -mania has spilled off of the Phil’s Tire Town court and onto the Met Gala 2024 carpet , with Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist in two custom Loewe looks.

The Met Gala dress code, “Garden of Time,” borrows its name from a fantastical J.G. Ballard short story. In it, a mob encroaching on a palatial estate is only kept at bay when the Count who lives there cuts a flower from his garden; when they finally do arrive, they find the place in crumbling ruins.

O’Connor’s look is leaning towards the Count: an exaggerated black tuxedo with full tails, a white brocade shirt, a shiny bow tie-cum-brooch from Loewe x Lynda Benglis collection, and beaded Campo Biker boots. (A luxurious upgrade from his La Chimera suits , to be sure.)

Faist went more garden vibes for his Met Gala debut: cream trousers, a black double-breasted blazer, and—crucially—a big, honking, possibly butter-dipped, radish brooch.

Anticipation for how the Challengers boys would dress was already building in the days before the Met Gala . It would be the final stop of a long, charming spring press tour during which their style was both carefully considered and meticulously analyzed . And when it emerged that O’Connor and Faist would be staying at the Carlyle this week—a historic New York City institution since 1930—it was re-christened “The Loewe Boys hotel.”

In Challengers , O’Connor’s Patrick Zweig and Faist’s Art Donaldson are connected by shared history and fierce competition over the woman they both love. In real, sartorial life, the glue is Jonathan Anderson. To recap: GQ ’s 2023 designer of the year has been the creative director of Loewe for over ten years. Josh O’Connor has been a face of the brand since 2017. Anderson’s first foray into costume design was with Challengers , where he dressed Patrick Zweig in sleazy tennis grails and Art Donaldson in crisp Uniqlo whites. (Anderson has regularly collaborated with Uniqlo since 2017.) Post-filming, both actors opted for several Anderson designs during their Challengers press tour. Loewe is also dressing Omar Apollo , Dan Levy , Jonathan Bailey , Ayo Edebiri , Gretas Gerwig and Lee, and Taylor Russell at the Met Gala this year. Meanwhile, Met Gala co-chair Zendaya, a.k.a Tashi Duncan, is wearing Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano—appropriately enough, doing her own thing.
