Unknown Mortal Orchestra Announce 2023 Tour, Share New Song: Listen

By Jazz Monroe

Unknown Mortal Orchestras Ruban Nielson

Unknown Mortal Orchestra have announced a 2023 tour in support of a forthcoming double album, along with the first taste of the record. Watch the video for “ I Killed Captain Cook ” below and scroll down for the tour dates.

The video features Ruban Neilson’s mother, Deedee Aipolani Nielson, described in a press release as “a Kanaka Maoli from Hilo and Miss Aloha Hula 1973.” The song, the release notes, “is told from the perspective of the Hawaiian that killed Captain James Cook, the English explorer largely responsible for the colonization of Polynesia, who attempted to kidnap Hawaiian chief Kalaniʻōpuʻu, and eventually met his demise in Hawai’i as a result.” When Nielson was a child, his mother would tell him the story, and the song is his tribute to her.

Last year, UMO released a pair of standalone singles, “ Weekend Run ” and “ That Life ,” as well as “ SB-09 .”

Live Review: Unknown Mortal Orchestra @ 9:30 Club — 4/18/23

Live Review: Unknown Mortal Orchestra @ 9:30 Club — 4/18/23

A path to success in music could very well originate from a trust in one’s own vision and the patience to nurture ideas into a full body of work.

The most thoughtful artists establish their early sound like planting a seed, and the bold ones grow their catalogue by way of inventive, deeply personal songs and with a confidence that fans will always welcome new material — even it takes a few listens.

Ruban Nielson believes in the songs he’s been crafting as the leader of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and by instilling an authenticity when he formed the band in 2010, the New Zealand native propped the group for longevity and put it on a trajectory to become one of the most thrilling and pleasurable acts recording and taking the stage today.

UMO packed 9:30 Club on back-to-back nights last week, and in playing two sold-out shows in the nation’s capital, Nielson and his squad showed they are indeed thriving on their patented psych rock-acid pop-fantasy R&B recipe, as are the band’s growing number of fans.

Stream the new Unknown Mortal Orchestra album, V, released on Jagjaguwar, via Spotify:

In an enigmatic presentation to match UMO’s brand of mystique and intrigue, the band executed a transportive and tantalizing set of music on April 18 that pulled from the talented group’s expanding songbook , including the magnificent new double album, V, released in March on Jagjaguwar.

Billowing stage fog made general visibility low early in the evening, but a massive U-M-O spelled out in vintage lights on the back wall pumped through the haze like an old-school marquee to fire up the audience as cups of water were dispersed to the many who’d waited in the humidity to get down with this band before it ended its anticipated U.S. spring tour this past weekend.

In full swing having been on the road since late March, the four-man group took the stage with a purpose and the crowd was elated, shouting from any direction, from both levels. Ruban was joined by bass player and respected producer Jacob Portrait, with whom he founded the band, as well as his brother Kody on the drumkit and Christian Li on keys.

Though it was hard to see the detail of their actions, these players concocted dynamic, provocative sounds, stylishly examined a spectrum of emotion and casually showed off incredible musicianship that added up to one of the trippiest, most captivating presentations 9:30 Club might see for some time.

“The Garden” from V kicked it off, and this unordinary piece showcased the remarkable vocal abilities and extraordinary guitar know-how Ruban’s acquired through more than 20 years of playing music professionally — he and Kody achieved success a band prior as The Mint Chicks , a volatile, expressive endeavor that lasted for about a decade. While that noisy art project was raucous and intentionally absurd, songs like the mystical opener to the new UMO album are demonstrative of an advanced songwriting operation — one with active, dazzlingly bizarre arrangements, cozy melodies, and a passion that juices from every track.

Watch the official music video for Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s most recent single, “Meshuggah,” via the band’s YouTube channel:

Much like their last go-round, the Nielson brothers boost Unknown Mortal Orchestra with an infectious spirit, a zest to make music and have fun doing it. Kody absolutely hammers the kit — he eventually broke a piece of it late in the set in DC. And Portrait — who’s worked with artists like Alex G and Porches — appears to be a like-minded soul. He wore a wide grin throughout the set, and he was crucial not only in laying a resilient foundation, but in lifting the harmonies too.

Li, an up-and-coming artist out of New York City and the newest touring member of the band, proved himself invaluable in shaping the sonic clouds that uniquely tint each composition.

This tour saw UMO decidedly bust out a list of what have become favorites along the band’s ascension, and those on hand in DC were treated to a pair from the album titled II: a surreal “From The Sun/Secret Xtians” combo followed by “Swim and Sleep,” a plunging, kaleidoscopic escape from anything and everything. Here, Ruban’s voice was otherworldly, wise, and cunning as he handled the guitar like a master and jumped about to catch what little light was flashing at him across the stage.

The first song released from the latest album, “Weekend Run” made its way onto streaming platforms back in 2021 — sassy, funky, a track that gets better with each play. Like Ruban has said in interviews , he follows his own instincts in writing songs and almost expects them to catch on after going through his own rigorous, selective approval process. At 9:30 Club, this and each original UMO track were welcomed by everyone in the house in what became an all-out bash.

“Thank you so much, DC,” Ruban said, never fully illuminated at any point in the show. “Thanks for letting us play some of this old stuff too.”

What he referred to as old might be considered now to be foundational material that has helped the band develop and maintain its identity as a leading force in experimental, psychedelic sounds. Over the course of a decade that saw this style of music proliferate — with a notable wave of psychedelic groups or musicians coming out of Australasia — Unknown Mortal Orchestra has used consistency and care to establish itself as a leading explorer of the territory.

The new songs feel akin to those captured on early records and reinforcing this in DC was a carefree pairing of “Thought Ballune / Little Blu House,” two standouts from the 2011 self-titled UMO premiere, an album praised out of the gate for its use of time and space.

Chris Nielson — Ruban and Kody’s father and an amazing story himself — emerged stage right with the sax or the flute to augment several tunes. With his presence alone, Chris reminded how far his two sons have come: They watched him struggle but ultimately overcome drug addiction before he helped them get into music.

Such an unconventional upbringing has yielded atypical songwriting, especially on the newest UMO album. Smooth, flirtatious, and intimate, “Nadja” has quickly emerged as another favorite from V, and it translated to a glorious live offering at 9:30 Club, where Ruban’s solo was chic, sexy, and unmistakably bluesy.

Fans were treated to “So Good At Being In Trouble,” a song from II that by the numbers appears to be the most popular of UMO’s to date. Like in this track’s recorded form, Ruban used his sumptuous, tender intonation to impassion it with a distinct soulfulness.

Revisit Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s critically acclaimed 2013 studio album, II, via Spotify:

A romantic and alleviating number from V, “Layla” was nothing short of beautiful in its live form. With its enduring, pitifully hopeful chorus — “let’s get out of this broken place” — this single, the first released this year, overjoyed the 9:30 crowd.

Ruban’s guitar seems to find a contrasting seam in the best UMO songs, and he went off in this take, injecting thrash into an off-beat rhythm and appearing like a guitar lord of sorts. He’d show throughout the night the ability to both obtrude and compliment melodies, giving each song its signature accent.

After “Multi-Love” from the 2015 album of the same name, Ruban shared an unexpected cover of T. Rex’s “Cosmic Dancer,” and in doing so he revealed what is certainly another psych posse that informed him and his mates.

A fascinating groove that high steps with elegance and hears Ruban at his most adoring, “Meshuggah” sounded like an instant classic when it was released early this year as a single, and it was a celebratory closer last Tuesday night at 9:30 Club. The audience wagged its collective tail through this track and on through to the encore, which saw UMO return for a healthy five-song addendum.

The group led it off with a cover of “Shakedown Street” that, when the band recorded it for the high-profile Day of the Dead project back in 2016 , undoubtedly placed UMO’s name in the minds of the many Grateful Dead lovers worldwide. At 9:30 Club, ticketholders bopped, twisted, and turned to the UMO version of this song as it ventured into wild territory and Ruban showed more of the electric guitar textures that seem wholly his own.

“Like Acid Rain” from Multi-Love manifested as a glamourous, vivid expose, and it preceded a series of the band’s most adored tracks, including “That Life,” a winsome and lasting pop cut from V, and the heavily requested and ultra-sweet “Hunnybee” from 2018’s Sex and Food.

As many hoped, the night culminated with one of the band’s most recognizable and amusing creations, “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone,” another hit from Multi-Love. Proof of UMO’s powerful dance-inducing properties, this snazzy, temperamental introspection moved every living body in the place.

With more artists than ever competing for eyes and ears, it’s not easy for a risk-taking band to establish itself with fans — especially at a time of so much psychedelic examination.

But even with a name that poses it ambiguously , Unknown Mortal Orchestra has become a favorite daily routine for many listeners worldwide. And with a perceptive leader who has put so much of himself and his family into the music, UMO is positioned to grow and please its fans for years to come.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are equal parts ribbing and respect ahead of summer tour

umo tour 2023

You might not expect a comedy routine during a conversation with Robert Plant and Alison Krauss .

But the rock 'n' roll lion and the bluegrass chanteuse who became an unlikely musical pair 17 years ago with their rootsy collaboration “ Raising Sand ” are relaxed, playful and exceptionally respectful of each other.

And very funny.

In a joint interview a few days before the June 2 launch of another summer of touring behind “ Raise the Roof, ” their 2021 acclaimed follow-up to the Grammy-winning “Raising Sand,” the pair begin by disagreeing about when their last tour ended (it was July) and tease each other while answering how they might change the setlist for this run of dates.

“We haven’t started yet, but we have 39 shows so I think we’ll consolidate and play to our strengths initially,” Plant says.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

“And then we’ll play to our weaknesses,” Krauss jokes.

“See what I’m dealing with?” Plant responds with mock exasperation.

For 25 minutes, the pair banter about aging (he is 75, she 52), why sleep is “crucial” while touring and the art of harmonizing.

“I’m trying my best to learn how to get it right,” Plant, one of the mightiest singers in rock history , says with discernable humbleness.

Here is what else the twosome had to share.

Question: What have you both been doing since getting off the road last year?

Robert Plant: I’ve been very busy following my north star and reaching into the great old world of R&B for songs I might do something with down the road. And watching football (soccer).

Alison Krauss: I’ve been watching documentaries about The Mothman. And have been in the studio with Union Station working on a new album.

What is it like making the shift from touring with Robert to going back into the studio?

Krauss: It’s much more laid back with Robert. The studio has its own unpleasantness, and it’s a much more relaxed environment here. I can’t believe I get to do both.

Plant: You have a lot more notes to worry about in that band. I’ve learned a lot in my time around Alison and the world that comes with her and it’s been a spectacle of charm, politeness and peach cobblers.

You mean, Southern?

Plant: Yes! You do a studio session in Nashville and you have to make your way through the baked goods. In England it’s much more rough and ready. The people in Nashville, there is a standard and quality and texture there.

More: The Beatles' 'Love' closes July 6. Why Ringo Starr says 'it’s worth seeing' while you can

You’ve had these songs out on the road the past couple of summers. What has changed in either the setlist or your approach to the music?

Krauss: All of these songs, they turn into something else the longer you live with them, like I wish we would have recorded it this way or phrased it like that. When you sing the same song (live), the stories change.

Is your rapport deep enough now that you can look at each other onstage and know the song is going somewhere?

Krauss: I know when he looks at me he’s going somewhere, but I don’t know where.

Plant: I never sang harmony in Led Zeppelin except for “Thank You.” I really didn’t know about singing with another person. I do believe that Henry “The Horse” (Smith), our guitar roadie, and Jimmy (Page) sang the harmonies with me on that one. But I loved listening to what Alison sang.

Robert, do you think if you hadn’t connected with Alison a couple of decades ago, that you would have stayed in music?

Plant:  I’ve been really fortunate because it was such a formative time in my life when Led Zeppelin came to a screeching halt and I had to keep moving and find a new place to do what I do and challenge myself … This woman sitting next to me is manna from heaven.

More: Darius Rucker talks family trauma, drug use and fate: 'The best revenge is success'

You’re also going on tour with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. Are you technically the opening act?

Plant: I think they’re doing ice cream sundaes and hot dogs when we play. But I do think there is one person on before us. Regardless, I’m proud to be standing next to Alison before the master (Dylan) takes the stage.

Alison, tell me about your friendship with Def Leppard since you sang on a couple of songs on their "Diamond Star Halos" album.

Krauss: All of the bluegrass-ers love Def Leppard. Their harmonies, the way they would blend. It was so incredible to do those songs. They were so generous and nice.

Plant: So different than Robert (laughs).

Krauss: Right, not like Robert. I said they were so generous and nice (laughs). It was a fantasy. There are plenty of people who grew up playing the kind of music I did and fantasized about playing a (rock) part.

There are always a few reconstructed Led Zeppelin songs in your show. Robert, do you enjoy doing them or is it more obligatory?

Plant:  I love them and am very proud of them and to get to change them around and to hear that voice next to me, it allows for an exotic overview of the more dramatic elements. At times I’m emotional about it because I’m hearing these songs – they are all beautiful adaptations that I could never have dreamt. It’s a great achievement.

Since it’s been almost a year since you last toured, do you have to do anything health-wise to get ready?

Krauss: Just sleep.

Plant: Sleep is crucial. Having jet lag, that’s a crippler. You’ll be awake at 4 a.m. sending notes to people, thinking should I read a book for awhile? No, go to sleep!

Have you discussed any future recordings together so it won’t be another 14 years between albums?

Plant: Time is a funny thing, isn’t it? Alison is going back on the bluegrass trail, so I guess if she wants me back, she can give me a call.

Oller: 'Hurry up and hit it!' Slow play reminds golfers of frustrations on own golf course

umo tour 2023

Follow along with live updates from the final round of the 2023 Memorial Tournament.

Patrick Cantlay’s putter might as well be a pendulum swinging back and forth inside a grandfather clock, measuring time by the minutes it takes him to strike the ball.

His wiggling and waggling when standing over a putt, before finally pulling the blade back into pinball launch position, is maddening to witness. Playing the first two rounds of the Memorial Tournament with Billy Horschel and Hideki Matsuyama , Cantlay consistently took longer than his playing partners after settling over his ball at address.

Memorial Tournament: What do the yellow ribbons at the Memorial Tournament final round mean?

At least the two-time Memorial winner is not a calendar whose timetable is counted in days, weeks and months, even if sometimes it feels that way.

2023 Memorial Tournament: Memorial Tournament pairings, tee times, TV info for Sunday's final round

Slow play is a hot topic on the PGA Tour, and Cantlay is the poster snail, his sluggish pace of play, mostly around the green, a burning issue during the Masters, when millions of TV viewers – and fast-moving Brooks Koepka playing in the group behind him – wanted to scream, “Hurry up, already.”

But while Cantlay is at the center of the slow play discussion, my thoughts on the subject go against the grain of those wringing their hands over concern that he and other slowpoke compadres create a negative perception that endangers fan interest and jeopardizes the health of the tour.

My alternative take goes like this: slow play is not an alarming issue for the tour, but instead an individual frustration for fans.

Memorial: Oller: Jack Nicklaus nails it; Slow play on PGA Tour is a poor form of selfishness.

Allow me to explain. Pace of play matters little on TV, which is how most fans watch golf tournaments. It doesn’t matter that amateur sensation Sam Bennett took forever to hit his approach shots at Muirfield Village Golf Club, regripping his club four and five times before beginning his backswing, because his group was not featured on the broadcast. If you don’t see slow play, does it really exist? Plus, TV minimizes the visual effects of slow play by cutting from player to player, a kind of slow-play sleight of hand.

Memorial: Jason Day, Cameron Young among golfers who missed the cut at the 2023 Memorial

As for slow play turning 4½-hour rounds into fivers, who besides the TV crew trying to make their dinner reservations really cares? I watch golf and seldom think, ‘This is taking too long. Time to mow the grass.’ I only exit the broadcast early if the leaderboard is a “Who’s He?” more than a Who’s Who.

The reality is that amateur golfers of my ilk like to complain about slow play because we project our own wait-on-every-shot experiences onto the tour pros who remind us of that agonizingly slow foursome playing in front of us, the one we blame for turning our coulda-been-a-82 into a more realistic 95.

We can’t stand watching Cantlay take forever over a putt because we’ve been stuck behind a high-handicap iteration of him at our muni or country club.

Memorial: Second-round Memorial Tournament leader Justin Suh looks poised for breakthrough

Of course, many of us are the slow player we despise, but in our lack of self-awareness we justify our slog pace as inevitable, blaming it on failing to find our ball in the too-thick rough or after searching those inconveniently-placed woods (beware the poison ivy, people).

But despite taking entirely too long to look for balls and not being ready to hit when it is our turn, there are times when we play at an acceptable pace only to slam up against a) saunterers who move at the speed of glacial melt; b) multiple riding carts criss-crossing the fairway 200 yards away; and c) the Rory McIlroy wannabe who waits to hit his second shot on a par-5 despite being 320 yards from the green.

Such scar tissue, mostly formed through our impatience, causes us to go berserk when we see Cantlay shift his weight for a fifth time on the green, or Keegan Bradley advancing and retreating in the fairway like a shy middle school boy practicing to ask a girl on a date, or rolling our eyes when Viktor Hovland and an increasing number of others test a green’s slope by straddling the putting line and rocking side to side as if trying to maintain balance on a boat in choppy waters.

Memorial: Justin Suh tops leaderboard and more stories from Round 2 at Muirfield

Does that mean it is perfectly fine for tour players to take their sweet time whenever they want? No. There is something called consideration of others that should enter a slow player’s thinking, whether in contention on Sunday or grinding to make the cut.

Plus, what player wants to hear snarky comments about his laggardly play? Cantlay can’t enjoy reading how the sponsor name on his golf bag should be changed from DeWalt to DeWait. But he can silence his critics in one easy - and quicker - step. Pick up the pace.

NiJaree Canady, Stanford softball

The final all-Pac-12 softball game ended in close fashion. Stanford ace and USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year NiJaree Canady tossed eight Ks while allowing four hits, one run and no walks. UCLA was kept quiet after hitting a solo homer in the second inning, while the Cardinal built its lead, highlighted by two runs from Emily Jones.

The Cardinal resurged as it recycled their batting order in the bottom of the third.

Emily Jones sparked Stanford's momentum by singling to shortstop. Behind in the pitch count, Taryn Kern remained patient and swatted a double to the left-field warning track to plate Jones. Two batters later, Ava Gall singled and brought in Kern, stealing a 2-1 lead.

Jocelyn Erickson's nickname is "Saucey Jocey," and she most definitely brought the sauce this evening. The sophomore sent a three-run no-looker 260 feet beyond the centerfield wall to bring the Gators up 6-2 at the top of the sixth.

👊 Florida takes the upper hand

The Crimson Tide's pitching woes cost them a run in the fifth. Rookie RHP Jocelyn Briski was called from the bullpen at the top and struggled to settle in, allowing two hits, a run and a walk. Reagan Walsh's RBI single brought in Korbe Otis for her second run of the day. Florida leads going into the sixth, 3-2.

The Tide knot the score at 2 to cap off an eventful third inning. With two up and one out, Marlie Giles singled up the middle to bring in Lauren Johnson for the freshman's 16th run of the season. The Gators extinguished the threat with a double play to end the inning.

🌊 Gators turn the tide

Florida found momentum at the top of their batting lineup, with leadoff hitter Skylar Wallace singling and Korbe Otis drawing a walk. And with a deep single to right field off the bat of Jocelyn Erickson, Wallace ran home to even the score, 1-1.

Next to bat, Reagan Walsh reached on a fielder's choice to score Otis and put the Gators in the lead, 2-1.

Pro golfer Grayson Murray, 30, died by suicide, family says

By Lucia Suarez Sang

Updated on: May 27, 2024 / 1:35 AM EDT / CBS News

The family of pro golfer Grayson Murray, the 30-year-old whose death  was announced on Saturday, said in a statement Sunday that he died by suicide.

The PGA Tour released a statement on behalf of Eric and Terry Murray, the golfer's parents, who said they "have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone."

"It's surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It's a nightmare," the statement said, adding: "He was loved and he will be missed."

The Murrays thanked the PGA Tour and the golf community for its outpouring of support.

"Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now," they said.

2024 PGA Championship - Round One

They asked for privacy and asked people to honor their son by being kind to one another.

"If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else," the statement said.

The PGA Tour announced on Saturday that the two-time tour winner had died. CBS Sports reported he had withdrawn from the second round of the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth.

"I am at a loss for words," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. "The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones."

PGA officials said grief counselors will be made available at all venues this week.

Murray won his second PGA TOUR title at this year's Sony Open in Hawaii. He played golf at Wake Forest University, East Carolina University and Arizona State University before turning professional. He won his first title at the 2017 Barbasol Championship when he was 23 years old.

PGA TOUR winner Grayson Murray passes away at 30

Grayson Murray, who won his second PGA TOUR title at this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii, passed away Saturday.

"We were devastated to learn – and are heartbroken to share – that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play,” Commissioner Monahan continued. “They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Grief counselors were made available at the venues for this week’s PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events. Commissioner Monahan, who traveled from TOUR headquarters in Florida to the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, said he was "devastated" by the loss.

Grayson's parents, Eric and Terry Murray, said in a statement Sunday that the cause of death was suicide .

"Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes," his parents wrote. "By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed."

Murray, 30, was a standout golfer from his youth. He won three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships (2006-08) and was the top-ranked golfer in his age group. He made his first cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at age 16, becoming the second-youngest player ever to do so. After stints at Wake Forest University, East Carolina University and Arizona State University, he got the break he needed in 2016 when he was given a sponsor exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour event near his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. He finished inside the top 10 at that event, the Rex Hospital Open, which qualified him for another start. When he posted another top 10 at the BMW Charity Pro-Am, his professional career took off. He concluded his season with a victory at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship to finish second on the Korn Ferry Tour money list and earn full status on the PGA TOUR for the 2016-17 season. The win came a week before his 23rd birthday.

Murray wasted little time establishing himself on golf’s biggest stage as a rookie. He won the 2017 Barbasol Championship while still just 23 years old. His final-round 68 not only secured a one-shot victory, but also solidified a two-year exemption through the 2019 PGA TOUR season. He finished 66th in the FedExCup and earned nearly $1.5 million.

Grayson struggled for the next few seasons on the PGA TOUR. In 2023, he found his game again on the Korn Ferry Tour; he notched two victories – the Advent Health Championship in Kansas City and the Simmons Bank Open outside of Nashville – to finish fourth on that tour’s points list and earn a spot back onto the PGA TOUR for the following season.

Murray opened the 2024 season with a playoff victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He made a clutch up and down on the 72nd hole for a birdie to force a playoff. Then he sank a 40-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to defeat Byeong Hun An and Keegan Bradley. He reached a career-high 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking after that victory.
