Race History

The Santos Tour Down Under is Australia's greatest cycling race, with a rich history as the highest-regarded and most popular bike race in the southern hemisphere.

The event was first staged in 1999 with local rider Stuart O’Grady taking the win. Since then, numerous internationally renowned cyclists have joined  the Honour Roll . The event has grown year-on-year to become the biggest cycling race in the southern hemisphere.

Santos Leaders Jersey

Ziptrak sprint jersey, efex king/queen of the mountain jersey, zwift young rider jersey.

Santos Leaders Jersey

The Santos Ochre Jersey is awarded to the rider with the fastest cumulative time at the end of each stage - the leader of the 'general classification - and the overall winner at the end of the race.

Ochre is the colour of the iconic South Australian outback, and is unique among the general classification jerseys in the UCI WorldTour.

Ziptrak Sprint Jersey

This jersey is awarded at the end of each stage, and the race, to the rider with the most number of points in the sprint classification.

Sprint points are awarded at pre-defined checkpoints on stages, including the finish. Sprint checkpoints located along the route are referred to as intermediate sprints, and carry fewer points than those associated with the finish. The first three riders receive points towards the classification.

King/Queen of the Mountain Jersey

The efex King/Queen of the Mountain jersey is awarded at the end of each stage, and the race, to the rider who leads the cumulative Mountains Classification.

efex King/Queen of the Mountains points are awarded at pre-determined summits along each stage. This jersey traditionally has a polka dot pattern, which started in the Tour de France in 1975 and has been adopted by other races around the world. The efex King/Queen of the Mountain jersey has blue polka dots.

Zwift Young Rider Jersey

The Zwift Young Rider's jersey is awarded at the end of each stage, and the race, to the rider under 26 years of age with the best cumulative time in the race. The Youth Classification leader and winner traditionally wears a white-coloured jersey in world cycling, and the Santos Tour Down Under also maintains this tradition.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the 2023 Santos Women's Tour Down Under !

Racing is just about to set off for stage 1 of the Women's Santos Tour Down Under from Glenelg to Aldinga for a total of 110km. The UCI Women's World Tour event has attracted 77 riders to take the start in Glenelg today.

And racing is underway for stage 1 of the Women's Santos Tour Down Under! The elite women's field has 110km to go.

Here's a comprehensive look at the routes the women will face over the next three days - it's a historic first time for the TDU organisation, as it's the first time they've hosted a women's World Tour event.

"It will be a big moment to have the first ever UCI Women's WorldTour stage race here in South Australia and to see the very best female cyclists competing across our state once again," Assistant Race Director and three-time world champion Annette Edmondson said in a press release.

The riders are just about to to head out of the neutral zone and officially be on their way. It's a nice day in South Australia, with temps currently at 21 Celsius with zero chance of rain. The wind speeds will be relatively high however at 34 kph.

Today's rolling course is predicted to favour the sprinters, but with the wind speeds as high as they are, we could see some early action - along with the potential for echelons.

It's all together in the opening kilometres. No attacks just yet.

It's been reported that Simone Boilard (St Michel - Mavic - Auber93) and Elizabeth Stannard (ZAAF) crashed in the neutral zone. Boilard is back in the race, but Stannard has had to unfortunately abandon.

Wide highways and windy conditions are deterring any attacks in the first 10km of the race.

The race is still all together 18km into the race.

We're 95km from the finish, and our first attack of the day comes from the Norwegian team Coop - Hitec Products. Sylvie Swinkels is attempting to brave the block headwind.

And the Dutch rider Sylvie Swinkels is quickly brought back into the peloton. The wind is too much for a solo attacker it seems.

Just as the peloton turns into a crosswind, Tiril Jorgensen (Coop - Hitec Products) and Georgia Whitehouse (ARA Skip Capital Sunshine Coast) take the opportunity to attack with 88km to go.

Jorgensen and Whitehouse have been joined by a large group of around 15 riders.

After a flurry of attacks, it's all back together at the front.

Team Jayco-AIUla's Georgie Howe is sitting at the front of the peloton doing the lion's share of the work as they make their way toward the first climb.

The riders are on Chaffeys Road and approaching the first classified climb of the day. It's a Cat. 4 climb that averages 6 percent and is .8 km long. There will be points for the first three over the line (3-2-1).

Results of the QOM at Chaffeys Road (Cat. 4)

1. Gladys Verhulst (FDJ - Suez) 3 points

2. Claire Steels (Israel Premier Tech - Roland) 2

3. Sophie Edwards (ARA Skip Capital Sunshine Coast) 1

It's all together in a tightly packed peloton.

We're getting word of the second crash of the day. It's Keely Bennett (Team Bridgelane) who goes down. It's looking as though she will abandon. We can't confirm that yet, however.

The race is all together on the approach to the first intermediate sprint of the day, where there are also bonus seconds on tap for the first three across the line. It's coming up in about 5 km.

The peloton are getting closer to the intermediate sprint. Immediately after, they'll turn back into a crosswind.

Results of the first intermediate sprint at Willunga Show Hall (53km to go)

1. Grace Brown (FDJ - Suez) 3 points, 3 seconds

2. Alex Manly (Jayco - AlUla) 2 points, 2 seconds

3. Ruby Roseman-Gannon (Jayco - AlUla) 1 point, 1 second

FDJ - Suez, Jayco - AlUla and Trek - Segafredo were all interested in in the Ziptrak points, but Trek couldn't get in the points this time around. There's still one intermediate sprint left.

There were some crosswinds, but they aren't strong enough, or at the right angle, to create any echelons in the peloton.

There's 45km left in the race and we're still all together.

The speeds are high with 42km to go. Trek-Segafredo is one of the teams leading the charge.

Now the Israel Premier Tech team has taken hold of the front. It's looking nervous in the bunch as they get closer to the sprint finale.

The peloton is heading across the finish line at Aldinga for the first time and the flags are being whipped around by the gusty coastal winds.

But things have calmed after the feed zone as they make their way past Port Willunga. It's lunch time in the peloton with 37 km to go.

Australian Georgia Whitehouse is sitting at the front for IBCT.

The Australian U23 TT champion, Isabelle Carnes sees an opportunity to attack and sets off.

Isabelle Carnes is followed by Gina Ricardo (Team Bridgelane). The two leaders have 39 seconds on the peloton.

Tiril Jorgensen (Coop - Hitec Products) is attempting to bridge with Dilyxine Miermont (St Michel - Mavic - Auber93).

There are just 10 seconds in between the two groups up the road, so it looks like they'll make the connection to become a lead group of four.

Things are hotting up as the two leaders are now more than 2:06 minutes ahead of the peloton. The chase group is still in pursuit.

With less than 30km to go, Tiril Jorgensen has dropped back in the peloton. Dilyxine Miermont has continued to work her way up to Carnes and Ricardo.

Dilyxine Miermont (St Michel - Mavic - Auber93) has given up the ghost and gone back into the peloton. The two leaders are the only ones up the road and have 1'30" on the peloton with 17km to go.

Carnes gets the max points and the time bonus after Ricardo doesn't contest it. It looks like they want to keep the momentum going all the way to the finish.

Actually, we spoke too soon. It looks like Miermont is still in the gap.

The peloton is starting to up the tempo with the Jayco team leading the way. Miermont is back in the peloton after a brave chase and gets a pat on the back from her teammates.

The peloton is getting closer to the two leaders as they hit the 10km to go point.

Trek is in control now and blowing the race to pieces.

It's all back together now and the peloton is resetting for a bunch sprint.

The acceleration from Trek-Segafredo has caused havoc in the peloton, with several riders going down.

Now Jayco is coming to the front and it's turning into a drag race as they head toward the finish line.

Amanda Spratt is an a great position here with 5km to go. She's on the wheel of teammate, Brodie Chapman.

We're heading into the sprint finale! There's a tailwind which is making things super fast.

Greatness Returns as the Men's Stages are Set

A historic Riverbank prologue and finish atop Mount Lofty headline race routes for the return of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) WorldTour Santos Tour Down Under in January 2023.

Stages for the 2023 men’s race were launched today, with new start and finish locations in the mix and fans invited to enjoy about 700 kilometres of action from Tuesday 17 – Sunday 22 January . The curtain-raiser Schwalbe Classic circuit through central Adelaide will take place on Saturday 14 January .

Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison said the UCI WorldTour event would return with fresh energy and share the state at its best.

“We are very excited as anticipation is building for this major event,” Ms Bettison said.

“We know how important the Santos Tour Down Under is to South Australia’s tourism sector and its power to capture international attention. It’s more good news for our tourism sector which is bouncing back with record CBD hotel bookings and more flights landing at Adelaide Airport.

“Just over six months from now – both the men’s and women’s races will be held at the highest level of competition, and we are absolutely ready to share South Australia with a global audience once again.”

The Santos Tour Down Under men’s race has secured its place at the highest level of international cycling competition for the next three years.

UCI President David Lappartient said, “I am truly pleased to see the return of the men’s Santos Tour Down Under to the UCI WorldTour calendar in 2023. After being cancelled two years running due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this race will again stand as the opening event of the UCI WorldTour – confirming its position in this series of the world’s most prestigious races. I know that the fantastic organisation combined with the friendly South Australian welcome will guarantee an extraordinary experience for the riders and fans alike.”

The UCI has granted the event registration on its WorldTour calendar for the 2023, 2024 and 2025 seasons – a move that ensures the best international teams and riders will continue to compete in South Australia each January.

Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Katrine Hildyard said it was exciting news for Australia’s greatest cycling race.

“South Australia has a proud and historic cycling culture that is only further enhanced by hosting a UCI WorldTour event,” Ms Hildyard said.

“I warmly welcome the Santos Tour Down Under back for its twenty-third edition, under Race Director, and inaugural winner, Stuart O’Grady. We are also delighted that, for the first time, we will be welcoming the world’s most elite female cyclists to SA for a UCI Women’s WorldTour event. Our government is committed to showcasing and advancing women’s sport and having this international event is an important part of those efforts.

“The Santos Tour Down Under goes hand in hand with, and strengthens, the elite talent pathway provided through the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) Cycling Program. Its presence on the State’s sporting calendar will hopefully inspire future generations of South Australians to achieve sporting excellence.”

Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Stuart O’Grady OAM said race routes would test elite international riders as they compete in South Australia for the first time since 2020.

“The 2023 race routes have been designed to test our cyclists like never before whilst taking fans to the heart of the action,” Mr O’Grady said.

“The Santos Tour Down Under will open with an exciting new time trial: the EFEX Prologue around Adelaide’s Riverbank is an event first, taking place on a loop around the Torrens with each rider beginning on the Riverbank bridge and tackling the course individually – it’s man versus clock in this all-out effort.

“More event firsts include a formidable Mount Lofty finisher and a stunning beachside stage start at Brighton – all the race routes showcase South Australia at its very best and we can’t wait welcome the international cycling community back to our state.”

The 2023 Santos Tour Down Under men’s stages are:

2023 UCI WorldTour: the peloton takes on a full season of thrilling action

Excitement returns in australia.

After two years’ absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Santos Tour Down Under (January 17-23) will once again kick off the season. The event comes just a few months after Australia welcomed the 2022 UCI Road World Championships to Wollongong.

Rouleurs, sprinters, punchers and climbers will find varied opportunities to bring battle in the year’s first stage race, which will start from Adelaide with a 5.5km prologue. Five stages will follow along the Gulf of Saint-Vincent with three finishes favouring sprinters and two for puncher-climbers. Mount Lofty (683m) will be the new decider for this 23rd edition, with its 2.6km averaging at 7.3%.

The formidable Mount Lofty will make its first appearance on the final day of racing 🔥 Riders will leave from Unley & travel up the old freeway, with the end of race neutral set to come at the notorious Devil’s Elbow. The peloton will then remain Down Under with the return of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (January 29).

Classics and stage races: a thrilling European spring

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), winner of the 2022 UCI WorldTour individual ranking, is awaited in the United Arab Emirates to defend his crown on the UAE Tour (February 20-26). In the desert, he will face the Belgian prodigy and 2022 UCI World Champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step). The general classification specialists will then take to Europe for Paris-Nice (March 5-12), Jonas Vingegaard's first big test of the season, while his Jumbo-Visma partner Wout van Aert will refine his preparation towards the classics on the Italian roads of Tirreno-Adriatico (March 6-12).

The great classics campaign will open with the traditional Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Elite (February 25), followed by the unmissable Strade Bianche (March 4) and then the season’s first Monument: Milano-Sanremo (March 18). Big guns are already dreaming of shining on the Classic Brugge-De Panne (March 22) and the E3 Saxo-Bank Classic (March 24), quickly followed by Gent-Wevelgem in Flanders Fields (March 26) and Dwaars door Vlaanderen – A Travers la Flandre (March 29).

Following these highlights of the spring season, it will already be time to tackle the second and third Monuments of the year: the Ronde van Vlaanderen - Tour des Flandres (April 2) and Paris-Roubaix (April 9).

Once the cobblestones have been crossed, hilly courses will dominate the demanding road towards the end of this classics campaign. In the Netherlands, the Amstel Gold Race (April 16) marks the transition towards the Ardennes before the punchiest riders make the most of the Mur de Huy at La Flèche Wallonne (April 19), just before the year’s fourth Monument, Liège-Bastogne-Liège (April 23). Eschborn-Frankfurt will close this intense one-day racing campaign on May 1.

Grand Tour flavours

After Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico, the main players in stage races will go to Spain to take on the Catalan Pyrenees in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya (March 20-26). As always, the rough climbs of Itzulia Basque Country (April 3-8) will generate a great show. The peloton will then rise even higher, in the Swiss Alps, during the Tour de Romandie (April 25-30).

It will be the start of a delightful period for fans of the three-week races. The 106th Giro d'Italia will start on May 6 from the Abruzzo region, in Fossacesia, and will end on the 28th in Rome. The winner of the 2022 edition, Bora-Hansgrohe’s Jai Hindley, will try to defend his crown against the likes of Evenepoel and Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma), 3rd in his last participation, 2019.

Sunny days in European latitudes herald the Tour de France, preceded by the Critérium du Dauphiné (June 4-11). The French event will be followed by the Tour de Suisse (June 11-18), before the season’s second Grand Tour (July 1-23).

The Tour de France Grand Départ will be in Bilbao with three spectacular stages already offering plenty of elevation, before moving to the Pyrenees on day five. The Tour will then return to the Puy de Dôme volcano, which has not been climbed for 35 years. The Alps will also offer a superb playground for a rematch between Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogačar and the many contenders who will try to stand in the way of the last two winners of the Grande Boucle.

As they also eye the UCI World Championships in Glasgow and across Scotland (Great Britain, August 3-13), the stars of the peloton will have little respite before hitting the Spanish roads of the Vuelta Ciclista a España, the last Grand Tour of the season, which this year will start in Barcelona and end in Madrid (August 26 - September 14).

A spectacular end to the season

Other major races will punctuate the end of the 2023 UCI WorldTour calendar. After the excitement of the Tour de France, the Basque Country will host another major day of battle with the Donostia San Sebastián Klasikoa (July 29). The Tour of Poland will take place at the same time (July 29 - August 4).

The European summer also marks the return of one-day races with the BEMER Cyclassics, promised to sprinters (August 20), and the Bretagne Classic - Ouest-France (September 3), ahead of the Grand Prix Cycliste of Québec (September 8) and Montreal (September 10) on the other side of the Atlantic. Experts of the northern classics will also be able to shine on the tricky roads of the Benelux Tour (August 23-27).

Climbers will once again have pride of place on the occasion of the last Monument of 2023, Il Lombardia (October 7), before the final fireworks are to be launched in China at the Gree-Tour of Guangxi (October 12-17).
