I was able to attend the French Exit 6 1/2 year ann. tour this year and was blown away with their performance. For this tour, Jordana was the opening for T.V girl. Knowing a bit of Jordana I wasn't really a fan of her music. BUT, after listening to the opening set list I instantly became a fan.

After I think was a 30 minute wait after the opening set, T.V Girl and Jordana went on stage to play the first song "Pantyhose". From the starting song to the end their performance and the vibe they were giving off, it felt very alive in the venue. Some people may bash on the band playing on a different key or different tempo but I enjoyed the fresh sounds of songs that I am already familiar with. I also enjoyed how lively Wyatt and Jordana were through out the show :).

If your friend bought your ticket and your just tagging along or you don't know how the songs normally go you will enjoy the show a lot. They sang in different keys and they changed the beat COMPLETELY to one of my favorite songs (taking whats not yours). The people around me were not even vibing with the music. At first, I thought I was being too harsh because my friends said they liked the show but they only knew one song from the band so of course they're gonna think the rest of the set was amazing. Some of the songs actually sounded the same but the overall show really left a sour taste in my mouth. At least the opening act was decent.

It was an outstanding show! The lights and set design was lovely. I loved how intimate and relaxed it was. I would 100% go to another TV Girl show. :-)

After starting out in a Roxbury ‘college house,’ Magdalena Bay is now one of pop music’s rising stars

When Mica Tenenbaum and Matt Lewin were in college, they were no strangers to the eight-hour bus rides between Boston and Philadelphia.

They met in high school in Miami at what Tenenbaum described as a “‘School of Rock’-style” after-school program. At the time, they were playing prog-rock music for the band Tabula Rasa , releasing two albums under that moniker before going on to start Magdalena Bay.

While Tenenbaum studied at the University of Pennsylvania, Lewin attended Northeastern University and lived in what the pair could only describe as a “college house” with his roommates in Roxbury. About once a month, they’d alternate visits between the two cities.

It was in that Roxbury house that “Neon” was recorded — the first single off the pair’s second EP “night/pop.” Magdalena Bay was founded in part as a result of how long the Boston to Philadelphia bus rides were. They wanted to keep making music despite the distance between them, so their sound shifted towards electronic — something they could work on together online.

After graduation, the pair moved to Los Angeles in 2018 and have since released numerous EPs and two full-length albums, with their latest, “Imaginal Disk,” dropping in August. Magdalena Bay returns to Boston Wednesday to perform in front of a sold-out crowd at Royale.

“When you go back to a city that you’ve lived so long in, it always feels strange, but also really nice, in a way” Lewin told the Globe in a recent Zoom interview. “So I’m looking forward to just immersing myself in the city. Definitely gotta go back to Amelia’s [Taqueria] if it’s still there.” (We assured him it is.)

“It’s always so sick playing there,” Tenenbaum added. “I feel like Boston always has some of our best shows.”

The band’s sound, which could be characterized loosely as synth-pop, has garnered Magdalena Bay significant attention in indie pop spaces, as well as a loyal fanbase and a bit of critical acclaim — with Rolling Stone ranking their first album, “Mercurial World,” on its list of top 20 albums from 2021 . The band has quickly taken the internet by storm, amassing 2.9 million monthly listeners on Spotify, with their song “Killshot” becoming a semi-viral hit on TikTok. Magdalena Bay has even gained attention from publications like Vogue , Vulture , and Pitchfork as the band looks to evolve from being one of pop music’s best kept secrets into a true mainstream mainstay.

This tour is “more structured, but also more abstract,” Lewin noted. While the band’s last tour followed a clear narrative — Tenenbaum would interact with a robot character onstage with dialogue — the “Imaginal Mystery Tour” is more of a “suggestion of narrative flow.”

While there isn’t a plot, there’s still a story. Lewin called it a “hero’s journey.” According to Tenenbaum, they’ve also upped their production value with set pieces, a lighting director, and a new member of the touring ensemble, Myles Sweeney. Drummer Nick Villa will also perform with the band.

“I think Mica’s really taking to the performance-art aspect of it,” Lewin said. “I don’t know how you would describe your performance. To me it’s almost like mime, somewhat.”

Tenenbaum agreed, adding, “It’s been cool to sort of discover.”

The tour may be more abstract, but the album certainly isn’t, as it leans more towards being a concept album. In the album’s music videos, Tenenbaum plays an alien who gets an “imaginal disc” inserted into her brain. Ultimately, she rejects it, and goes on a journey toward discovering what it means to be human.

The theme of the disc came from where all good ideas do: Tenenbaum falling down a Wikipedia rabbit hole after seeing a video about how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. Tenenbaum explained that caterpillars have cells called “imaginal discs,” which hold the blueprint for their butterfly states, and survive the liquefaction that happens when in the cocoon. The butterfly retains its memory from the time it was a caterpillar — and in effect, its identity.

“It raised a bunch of questions about, ‘what is self?’” Lewin said. “If you could basically die and be reborn, and in a way that you’re still the same, you still have the same consciousness, then what really makes a person themselves? That was a philosophical concept that was intriguing to us.”

Tenebaum explained that performing their material makes for a different kind of concert. Yes, people are still sing along and dance, but there are also moments where people “just stare.”

“It lends itself to a theatrical energy and more of surreal performance and ambiance at the show,” she said.

What makes Magdalena Bay feel like Magdalena Bay is something the duo can’t quite put their finger on. It’s a combination of “a certain atmosphere” and “a certain sense of humor,” Lewin said.

And after years of collaboration, they are also attached to one another at the hip, brain, and keyboard, with their connection serving as the real secret sauce behind Magdalena Bay.

“We kind of share a creative brain,” Tenenbaum said.

“So,” Lewin said, finishing her sentence, “it just feels like a fluid process in a way that you could access someone else’s mind to amplify your own.”
