11 Guided Tour Companies That Offer Trips Around The World

By: Author Elizabeth Ciobanu

Posted on Published: 11/28/2023  - Last updated: 12/12/2023

Traveling the world is on many people’s bucket list. However, if you are anything like me, venturing out on your own to parts unknown — especially outside of the United States — can be a bit overwhelming if not a little scary.

true world travel and tours

Thankfully, if you are okay traveling with other people, guided tours can be a great way to see the world, and learn more in the process.

Guided tours give you the expertise of a local or long-term employee who knows the area well to act as your guide, allowing you to delve deeper into an experience than ever before.

Other travelers who make up your group will most likely be like-minded as they also signed up for the same adventure, meaning you can make new friends while enjoying an amazing vacation.

1. Around The World Specialists

true world travel and tours

Aptly named, Around the World Tours by Around the World Specialists has guided tours of a few varieties. The private jet trip allows you to circle the globe and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime adventure complete with National Geographic experts.

All the traveling will be from the immense comfort of a private jet.

The private jet guided tour will venture to legendary destinations like Tibet and Machu Picchu, along with a stop at the Taj Mahal and Marrakech. Natural wonders like the island paradise of Samoa, the Serengeti Plain, and the Great Barrier Reef will also be part of the itinerary.

This trip lasts 24 days, and the group size goes up to a maximum of 75 people. The first stop is right in America at the National Geographic Society in Washington,  D.C. The adventure will start with a welcome reception and dinner.

Day two begins the journey out of the United States as the group will make its way to Lima and then Cusco, where you will explore the Plaza de Armas , an impressive cathedral that is considered a perfect combination of Inca and Spanish Renaissance styles. There is stop after stop along this National Geographic-themed world tour.

If you are into history, or art or just like seeing amazing architecture and world wonders, this tour will be a treat for you. Cusco and Machu Picchu in Peru, Easter Island in Chile, Apia in Samoa, the Daintree Rainforest in Australia, Angkor Cambodia, Kathmandu, Nepal, Lhasa, and Tibet in Nepal and Agra in India, Tanzania, Wadi Rum in Jordan, and Marrakech in Morocco are all stops along this world-renowned private jet tour, all with expert guides along the way.

The private jet option is impressive enough, but there are also options to travel by train around the world, to safari around the world, to drive around the world, and even to experience all seven wonders of the world. These and more options are all available at Around the World Tours .

true world travel and tours

Named “World’s Best” by Travel + Leisure for 26 consecutive years, Tauck specializes in a wide variety of guided tour options that will take you all over the world.

You can choose from 19 tours and cruises in Latin America, 20 tours in Africa, 117 tours and cruises in Europe, 20 tours and cruises in Asia, one cruise in Antarctica, seven tours in Australia & New Zealand, 18 tours and cruises in Canada, and even 49 tours and cruises with the United States itself.

Tauck has been offering some of the best land-based tour groups throughout seven continents since 1925.

I particularly like that this company caters to families, but they also are perfect for solo travelers or even couples. The group size on these tours is between 35 and 44 guests, though that number can change based on the season and the type of tour.

Tauck enjoys a reputation for great attention to detail and ease of planning as notable parts of its guided tour experience. This has likely helped it earn the many awards it has kept throughout the years.

If river cruises are of particular interest, it’s worth noting that Tauck has also been named the “World’s Best River Cruise Line” as well.

Tauk is a family-owned company that commits to delivering the experience you expect or exceeding them. They are always looking for new ways to enhance the travel experience and make these tours even more memorable, and they have exclusive access to some spots in the world that are simply unavailable to the general public.

According to Tauk, it isn’t just about the places you visit but how you experience them that makes the difference.

true world travel and tours

You would be hard-pressed to find a guided tour company that has been orchestrating group trips longer than Colette , which has been working in the field since 1918. The group touring company features tours to all seven continents with 179 tour options. The most popular tour destinations with Colette are Italy, Iceland, and Ireland.

While other group tour companies typically have over 50 people, Colette, as a company, specializes in small groups. Consequently, their small group exploration tours range from as few as 14 people up to 24 people.

The only aspect that might dissuade you from opting for a Colette tour is the fact that they typically cater to older clientele or those aged 55 and older. I, for one, welcome the extra help and the potential for honorary grandparent induction, though, so this isn’t necessarily a bad thing as I see it.

The guided tours by Collete take the traditional tour and reimage it a bit. The tours are designed for the curious traveler who wants to dive into the culture and explore all a destination has to offer.

You will get to eat in locals’ homes, take cooking classes, travel by train, and even take tuk-tuks and explore cities via food tours. All these activities are designed for you not just to visit a destination but to connect with the local culture.

4. Intrepid Travel

true world travel and tours

Known as the company that specializes in small group travel with good views, good friends, and for good times, Intrepid Travel has more than 1,000 trip options to more than 100 countries.

They are the perfect option for the eco-conscious traveler as they have had an active stance on sustainable travel and climate action for some time.

You can enjoy several options through Intrepid Travel, most of which are more geared towards the active traveler. There are walking and cycling tours that will inspire even the most active person while they also have many family options that aren’t quite as strenuous.

Intrepid has been in business since 1989, so they have a long history of creating fun, adventurous guided tours. They aim for even smaller tour groups than any others already mentioned on our list, as they try to keep groups under 10 people, hence its reputation for being a great small group tour company.

Tour options include many possibilities, from walking, trekking, and cycling tours to family tours and polar tours. The family tours are especially interesting to me for obvious reasons, and I love that they favor real-world experiences over produced ones or those behind a screen.

Family tours include kid-friendly accommodations and activities, like kicking a football with Maasai tribespeople, searching for wildlife in Yellowstone National Park with a wolf tracker, or overnighting on a train in Egypt.

Intrepid believes that a sense of adventure should never disappear no matter your life stage, so they cater to families with all ages.

5. Thomson Family Adventures

true world travel and tours

Known as the family travel experts, Thomson Family Adventures is geared towards families and promises to excite, educate, and enthrall all participants.

Since its beginning in 1998, Family Adventures has been offering hand-crafted trips that promise memorable, active, and fun experiences.

Group sizes are kept on the smaller size, topping out at 25 people. Some of the most popular guided tour options include the Perfect Family Safari in Tanzania, the Galapagos Mult-Sport Adventure , and the Azores Family Adventure . Tour duration varies but most often ranges from 9 to 12 days.

The Perfect Family Safari is perhaps my favorite that Thomson Family Adventures offers. It achieves a perfect balance, providing an entire trip of fun for all age groups. It includes wildlife viewing in the Ngorongoro Crater for the Big Five: elephants, rhinos, lions, African buffaloes, and leopards.

The trip also includes a guided hike with a local wildlife scout that helps you and your family identify rare species and find elusive animal tracks.

You and the other members of your group will experience the generosity of the Tanzanian people firsthand and be able to visit local villages and schools, allowing you to interact with the local Maasai culture.

6. Classic Journeys

true world travel and tours

Classic Journeys founder Edward Piegza explains the difference in his world tours: “join us on our cultural walking adventures, as we explore the world on foot, at eye level.”

Classic Journeys believes that travel is a way to fuel the soul, to connect with other cultures, and to build relationships. Through their well-connected local guides, they are able to offer some of the most memorable experiences to their guests.

This award winning company, founded in 1995, has been the recipient of prestigious awards like the “ World’s Best Tour Operator” by Travel + Leisure, along with being named a National Geographic 50 Tours of a Lifetime .

It is considered by many as one of the most culturally rich and authentic walking tours in the world.

The curated daily walks allow guests to immerse themselves in culture and history. Local guides direct small groups, averaging just around 10 guests per each departure. Itinerary activities, hikes, and walks are included at no extra charge.

7. G Adventures

true world travel and tours

Founded in 1990, G Adventures was initially launched as a way to span the divide between mainstream travel and solo adventures.

Groups usually are made up of between 10 and 15 people, which allows you to get to know those you are traveling with well. It is considered a more affordable option than many other tour companies, especially as it is related to global travel, such as going from Croatia to Tanzania.

G Adventures allows you to input your travel style and signify if you would like an active experience, a family one, one that promotes wellness, one that focuses on local living, or a more classic experience.

This company believes that everyone deserves to experience the trip of their dreams, even if budget constraints make this seem out of reach.

Joining a small group adventure with G Adventures – the G stands for good – gives you the welcome safety and comfort of group travel while still offering you the freedom of individual or solo traveling.

Locally based guides provide knowledge on locations and are not called tour guides at G but instead given the title of Chief Experience Officers or CEOs.

8. Adventures by Disney

true world travel and tours

When it comes to family travel, there is likely no other name trusted more than Disney. That is why Adventures by Disney , which features trips to all seven continents, is yet another worthy addition to our list.

Tour sizes are a bit larger with Adventures by Disney ranging from between 30 and 40 guests.

Tour types include adult exclusives, river cruises, expedition cruises, land adventures, and escapes. Escapes are so named because they are slightly shorter than typical guided tours. They include destinations like Paris and Buenos Aires.

Disney is now offering trips to 40 different countries and features 45 different itineraries, all with Disney’s signature commitment to excellence.

Kids, even those under ten years of age, are welcome on these guided adventures. Adventures by Disney has been adding more guided family tours to its options since its original founding in 2005. This makes it a popular choice for families with kids, so expect to make some new friends!

9. Artisans of Leisure

true world travel and tours

With a name like Artisans of Leisure , you know you are in for a luxurious experience with highly customizable itineraries. These award-winning luxurious tours specialize in providing a heightened type of international travel.

There are destinations around the world spanning from Asia and Europe to the South Pacific and Latin America. There are even luxury tours to tour the Middle East and Africa.

To begin booking your trip through Artisans of Leisure you choose your destination and then your special interest tour option.

This means a focus on spa and wellness, action and adventure, family tours, honeymoon tours, etc. There are even tours specifically designed with art and architectural interest as well as garden tours, and more.

The luxurious family tours offered are designed to allow you to create memories with your children. All age groups can come along, spanning from kids to grandparents. Each tour is tweaked to meet your family’s own interests and needs, ensuring that all age groups, even as young as toddlers have a fun experience.

Family tours include appropriate tour pacing, childcare (if you want), family-friendly hotels and resorts, and expert private guides who bring historic sites and famous attractions to life.

There are private sightseeing and conveniences like skipping lines that are provided as part of this family tour package.

10. Tour Radar

true world travel and tours

Offering trips in more than 160 countries all over the globe, Tour Radar provides countless experiences from safari trips to cultural and culinary experiences.

You begin by working with a booking agent to join a group. Then you have the option of booking a private adventure or opting for a self-guided tour.

These tours are seamlessly organized and include everything from meals to activities and experiences. Tour Radar gives you options when it comes to types of adventures.

You can join a group adventure and enjoy a guide and more ease of travel, create your own group for private adventures, or customize an existing itinerary offered by the company to create a unique adventure.

Tours are available all year long and include many, many destinations and itineraries. There are options for all age groups ranging from family trips to those that are more geared toward seniors, to couples and young adults options.

Keep in mind that although there are no age limits, it’s important to check the activities on the itinerary before booking if you have small children or older adults in your party.

11. Austin Adventures

true world travel and tours

As another company that specializes in family adventures, Austin Adventures prides itself on finding and curating unique family vacation itineraries. If the idea of snorkeling to see an underwater volcano, or watching a baby sea turtle hatch sounds appealing, this could be a good fit for your family.

City exploration, cycling, hiking, and more are all part of Austin Adventures, which likes to keep groups small. Experience tours in New Zealand, Africa, Europe, or the Americas.

As a mom, I appreciate the fact that Austin Adventures does all the planning for me. You simply choose the destination and show up. Yes, this means that you don’t have to worry about food, as snacks, beverages, meals, transportation, equipment, activities, and guides are all provided with these all-inclusive group tours.

Details matter and Austin Adventures is a member of the Family Travel Association Certification Program , which means that all their trips are audited by a trusted third-party expert in family travel to ensure an unforgettable experience.

With an average group size of around 12, there is a 6 to 1 guide-to-guest ratio – and they’re an industry leader in this.

Austin Adventures has a single purpose amongst their global team: to guide their guests in building meaningful connections with the world around them and with each other through their uniquely shared experience.

Popular trip options include the Machu Picchu and Amazon Adventure, Patagonia Hiking Adventure, Ultimate North Island Adventure, Kathmandu Valley and Bhutan Aventure, and the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek just to name a few.

Master the art of travel with these tailored trips

Explore every continent with True Travel's bespoke personalised tours

Travel represents endless possibility. You could step into the wilds, tracking tigers through India's Kanha National Park or coming face to face with gorillas in Uganda; or you could immerse yourself in local culture, spending an afternoon in a Peruvian toymaker's workshop or retreating to unspoilt coastal villages on Indonesia's Sumba Island. You might take time to embrace traditional wellness rituals, such as an authentic hammam in Morocco or wellbeing retreats in the jungles of Peru; or you might indulge your taste buds with food-focused tours of vibrant street markets in Cambodia and foraging trips to find your own ingredients for a cooking class in the pastoral Italian countryside. Perhaps you'll tap into your inner adventurer and set off on an exhilarating two-week voyage in the Antarctic or climb Kilimanjaro; or perhaps you'll choose a slower pace, exploring Vietnam by rail, driving an electric Porsche through the fjords of Norway or cycling amid the dramatic vistas of the Himalayas.

All these adventures – and many, many more – can be curated for you through True Travel. From the skyscrapers of Singapore and the rugged, extraordinary beauty of the Australian outback to the pure white snows and glimmering glaciers of Antarctica, this boutique tour company invites curious explorers to discover the most incredible places on every continent.

Explore every continent with True Travel's bespoke personalised tours

As anyone who's ever faced the daunting task of planning a group getaway will tell you, no two people travel quite alike. So why, when booking a trip, should you be limited to cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all itineraries? True Travel offers a different service entirely: with every booking, its experts start from a blank piece of paper to ensure that your travel plans are tailored exactly to your preferences. Whether you're longing for high-octane adventures or seeking rest and relaxation, True Travel will create a journey orchestrated to meet your every desire.

Part of the reason why the company is able to offer this kind of bespoke service is down to its small, independent team. Each member specialises in a different location: they might have lived there previously or visit frequently, but they'll certainly know it inside out. Thanks to their vast expertise, you'll be able to truly immerse yourself in local culture, accessing the authentic side of a destination that most travellers never get to see. You'll also be in constant communication with the team, from the trip designers who'll consult with you on your likes and dislikes to turn the broad strokes of your journey into a beautifully crafted itinerary to the trip tailors, who'll open their little black books to make sure you've got the best seats in the best restaurant in the neighbourhood. On the ground, a network of guides will ensure you see a different angle of even the most popular tourist hotspots, creating totally unique experiences and unforgettable memories.

Explore every continent with True Travel's bespoke personalised tours

True Travel also demonstrates a deep respect and appreciation for the people who call these incredible places home. Its carefully chosen selection of cultural activities, such as staying in an ecolodge deep in the Amazon or visiting a Tokyo fish market to procure ingredients for a sushi-making class, put money directly into the pockets of local communities and independent businesses. Travelling with a positive impact is part of the company's ethos. Every client who makes a booking has the opportunity to directly contribute funds to the True Travel Foundation, through which young girls are inspired to continue their education with the Female Empowerment Programme in Zambia, and children who formerly lived on the streets or were forced into child labour in Jaipur are given essential supplies thanks to the Rucksack Project. Climate-conscious travellers can even offset the carbon emissions of their entire trip with a donation to the Seagrass Restoration Programme, Seawilding – the seagrass meadows in Scotland's Loch Craignish sequester carbon at 35 times the rate of rainforests.

Explore every continent with True Travel's bespoke personalised tours

A dream trip, whether you're exploring the remote glaciers or scorching deserts, should feel like your trip, curated for you and you alone. If you're seeking a travel experience that goes beyond the expected, while having a positive impact on the communities and places you visit, True Travel is the way to go.

5 Jack The Ripper Tour, London

Rated 4.5 stars on tripadvisor and recommended by 91% of travelers.

One of the greatest mysteries in the history of crime is the identity of the so-called Jack the Ripper, who mutilated and murdered at least five prostitutes in London in 1884. Was he a Polish immigrant, a lawyer, a royal, a Russian con man, or even a woman? The theories are endless, and many articles, books, and movies have been released on the subject.

Perhaps the answer lies in Ripper-Vision ’s themed tour, where you will visit every crime scene connected to this elusive figure and be shown “original crime scene photos taken at the time of the murders,” with “insight into the original Scotland Yard files.”

NYC’s unique neighborhoods are very different from one another. Those who have watched the acclaimed crime and action film by Martin Scorsese, Gangs of New York , may already be familiar with the city’s slums and what life was like there in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Featuring a retired NYPD detective, this wheelchair-accessible tour is organized by the NYPD Police Tours . It will bring you an authentic mafia experience in Little Italy, Five Points, and Chinatown, walking in the footsteps of crime bosses like Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano, Joe Bonanno, and the Gambino family.

On the bright side, you’ll also be treated to a large Sicilian cannoli from a restaurant founded in 1931.

3 True Crime & History Tour, Philadelphia

Operated by Grim Philly Twilight Tours and conducted by college professors and/or history teachers, this informative and gruesome tour is a mix of historical sightseeing and stories of crimes and ghosts.

Spanning the Betsy Ross House, the Christ Church Burial Ground, and Elfreth's Alley, it features notorious killers like the Corpse Collector, the Frankfort Slasher, and H.H. Holmes, and concludes with a free drink. The maximum capacity is 30 people, and Saturdays are adults-only.

2 French Quarter True Crime Walking Tour, New Orleans

Rated 5 stars on tripadvisor and recommended by 98% of travelers.

Organized by Haunted History Tours , the ever-popular, wheelchair-accessible, and highly engaging French Quarter True Crime Walking Tour can currently only be booked through the official website, and it operates rain or shine, except on Mardi Gras in New Orleans .

It claims to be “the most graphic, unedited true crime tour ever” and features several missing people, kidnapping, and murder cases, all backed by “police records, newspaper archives, and court records.”

This tour doesn’t welcome children under 13.

The World's Most Unique Garden Could Also Kill You Easily

With its 100 toxic, intoxicating, and narcotic plants, Alnwick Castle's Poison Garden would make DC Comics' Poison Ivy proud.

1 Gangsters & Ghosts Walking Tour, Chicago

Operated by Chicago Tours , the friendly and laid-back Gangsters and Ghosts Walking Tour is led by a historian. It guides visitors through the infamous Chicago Loop Vice District, where speakeasy saloons and bootleggers abounded in the 20s and 30s, and mob leaders like Al Capone instilled terror, leaving a trail of bodies - over 200, per Harvard Business School .

Highlights include the Congress Hotel, Death Alley, and the supposedly haunted Palmer House Hotel, and the maximum capacity is 20 people.

This tour is not wheelchair-accessible, and attendees are expected to be moderately fit.

Luxury Travel Tours & Travel

Luxury Travel Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Luxury travel could mean staying a five-star hotel in Europe , a beautiful resort on the Indian Ocean, or a luxurious tented campground on an African safari. It could mean traveling aboard a specially outfitted train, a deluxe river or small cruise ship or even by bicycle, as long as meals, lodging and support is top notch. Many tour operators offer luxury group tours or will plan one exactly to your specifications.

Unique Luxury Travel Destinations

Luxury travel today is going through a renaissance of sorts. In addition to the classic kind of resort stays and European based destinations, luxury travel has expanded to include more exotic and probably some unexpected destinations.

1. Chile - The South American luxury travel market is small but burgeoning. Around the Patagonia region in particular you will find many luxury accommodations and activities. Perfect for landscape photographers and outdoors enthusiasts who want to experience the dramatic scenery of Patagonia without committing to extreme hiking.

2. Kenya - Often called the oldest safari destination, Kenya luxury travel has a legacy that goes all the way to royalty. For it was here that Queen Elizabeth II traveled as a princess, immediately prior to becoming Queen of England. Safari lodges in Kenya date all the way back to the early 20th century - so if you’re looking for a uniquely historic luxury African safari, definitely consider Kenya.

3. Istanbul - Turkey is a fabulous stepping stone destination for travelers seeking to expand their comfort zone. Istanbul is a vibrant city, with many European influences, making it feel more accessible from a cultural standpoint for many travelers. Luxury accommodations are everywhere, and the price point is far more comfortable than in some other luxury travel destinations.

4. Belize - Enjoy the comforts of beautiful eco-lodges among the rainforests of Belize. Traveling in luxury in Belize, you can actually venture much further into some more remote areas and really unplug to enjoy the spectacular nature. You’ll often have a private guide who will take you along hidden trails, and out on the water to experience Belize’s world renowned snorkeling.

5. Peru - Peru is one of those destinations that offers several travel experiences from extreme luxury to extreme budget, that visit largely the same sights. You can even get to Machu Picchu in luxury! Luxury travel in Peru is all about getting special insight into the culture - meeting locals, enjoying culinary delights, and native art.

Luxury Travel Accommodations

Accommodation is one of the largest considerations on a luxury tour, and also one of the biggest contributing factors to what makes a tour “luxury” or not. While many budget or mid-range tours tend to opt for a basic style, luxury tours take their accommodation seriously.

From beachside resorts to glamping, luxury accommodation is something to write home about.

Feel the timelessness of Europe in a villa getaway. Nothing beats waking up to rolling hills of vineyards and roaming the rustic grounds. Feel like a local as you visit nearby markets for fresh produce, and enjoy watching the world go by as lingering over a coffee in a classic European cafe.

Villas are most common in Western European countries like Spain, Italy, and France. They are commonly designed as self sustaining farms or vineyards. When you stay in a luxury villa it’s a great way to feel the rhythm of European culture. You’ll enjoy home cooked meals that highlight local ingredients, and get to know the town and surrounding area with the help of a guide.

You can do luxury travel without a resort stay, and in fact more and more luxury travel outfitters are expanding their reach beyond classic resorts. But this is still one of the most popular kinds of luxury travel accommodation styles. Tried and true, resorts offer a great way to relax in comfort and safety - and are a very popular for families.

Similar to a cruise ship, resorts are largely self contained - you could spend a majority of your vacation at the resort without leaving to explore the outside world. For this reason, they are not the most adventurous of accommodations.

Beach resorts in particular are some of the most popular luxury getaways. And a great option for visiting areas that may be questionable safety-wise, like Mexico or some Central America destinations. Take a dip in crystal clear blue water, and enjoy lounging in the shade, feeling the warm breeze on a private stretch of beach.

Ever wanted to know what life in a castle was like? While they certainly wouldn’t have had WiFi, and probably would have been a great deal colder, you can get a pretty good idea when you stay overnight in a castle - a very popular luxury travel accommodation style in Europe.

Live your own fairytale as you wander ancient halls and explore beautiful gardens.

The relatively new concept of “glamping,” that is luxury camping, it’s actually quite a great way to be close with nature without having to rough it. Glamping destinations around the world are becoming increasingly popular. Get the best of both worlds!

5. Luxury river cruising

River cruising is becoming increasingly popular among older travelers. In Europe especially a luxury river cruise is a great way to travel. This is slow travel at its finest; fine wine, fine food, fine company.

The experience is more about gliding along in comfort, taking in the passing landscapes, than it is about diving deep into each destination - though most luxury river cruises offer plenty of opportunities to explore at each port stop. Excursions are not always included in the price, and are usually fairly specific in nature so you can choose a shore activity that meets your interests.

Private Tours and "Backstage Access"

While your accommodations are a huge part of the luxury travel experience, there is actually so much more to luxury travel.

For the best providers of luxury travel, it’s also about high caliber, exclusive tour experiences. Think an after hours tour of the Vatican or a wine tasting in Burgundy hosted by the winemaker himself.

Luxury tours are an amazing way to get some one-on-one time with experts in their fields, ask questions, and gain unique insight into some of the worlds most impressive sights you might otherwise miss if surrounded by crowds.

Released on 09/01/2024

[wind whooshes]

[conch shell blares]

[water roars]

[Ekolu] Hawaii is known as

the epicenter of the aloha spirit.

[gentle music plays]

People are filled with aloha,

but what is aloha? [gentle music plays]

To the tourist, the traveler,

aloha is a salutation. [gentle upbeat music plays]

[water trickles] It's so much deeper than that.

Aloha is endangered because it became overused.

It didn't have the depth of meaning

that is associated with it.

We need to find the true aloha again.

[surf roars]

Olowalu is one of the last

undeveloped alluvial floodplains in the state of Hawaii.

So the Olowalu Cultural Reserve was created

for those families that still have a lineal descendancy

and have a claim to these spaces.

My name is Ekolu Lindsey, and my family has

generational roots here in Maui,

specifically on West Maui.

The true meaning of aloha

is when you start volunteering your time

in places like these.

So this is the hardening station.

A lot of these plants here are gonna be planted

in Lahaina town after the cleanup is done

and people are ready to put plants in the ground.

They're able to come and get these for free.

I have a beautiful canopy coverage.

This is called the milo; this turns into a big tree.

At Kipuka Olowalu,

we remove invasive species

along a riparian corridor

to stabilize the Hawaiian biocultural resources.

This is the wiliwili,

and it's really easy to remember the name

'cause it's a wiliwili cool name.

It's a wiliwili awesome plant.

Now, when you look at these plants,

there's a connectivity between the indigenous plants

and something in the ocean.

The protectors are on land

that protects something in the ocean.

According to Kumulipo,

life began in the ocean. [gentle upbeat music plays]

It is important for the traveler

to understand malama.

Malama is to take care of,

to cherish, to take care of things properly.

Take care of the plants, take care of the land,

take care of the people.

We are here to protect, preserve,

and rejuvenate these spaces,

as well as share it out with whoever wants to come.

[water trickles]

Our volunteer days is open to the public.

By volunteering, you're tapping into information

and experiences that you have not had yet.

It may open your mind to a passion that is unexplored.

We'd love for tourists to come, have fun,

and spend money, and support the local economy.

Stay at the resorts that can accommodate

and have the infrastructure for you.

[gentle upbeat music plays] Tourism today directly

employ about 20,000 people.

However, when you look at the overall percentage

and the industries that it touches,

it's about 75% of our employees in the islands.

My name is Lisa Paulson.

I'm a 30-year resident, and I have background

in nonprofit management,

currently the Director of Maui Hotel

and Lodging Association. [surf roars]

The tourism industry generates

revenue in many different ways.

And one of the biggest revenue generators

is the transient accommodation tax.

And that goes into providing services.

And so, those tourism dollars are going back

into our daily lives here in Maui County

and in the state. [surf whooshes]

We see about 75% of our short-term vacation rentals

owned by people who don't even live here in the islands.

So as an industry, we're in favor of the ones

that are in the resort-designated areas,

adhering to all the laws, ADA compliance,

and safety issues. [upbeat music plays]

So when we look back in some of the ways

that we used to entice our visitors,

it was very inappropriate.

We were telling the story of the culture

in not the most beautiful way

that it is truly represented.

The all-you-can-eat buffet, the luau.

There's so much more to the culture and the history here

that is being opened up by all of these properties

that we're so excited to see.

[Kamahiwa] So we're here in Hale Kukuna,

which is our cultural center here at Fairmont Kea Lani,

just off of our lobby.

The purpose and intent of this space

is to invoke education

and knowledge through Hawaiian culture.

My name is Kamahiwa Kawa'a,

and I'm the Manager of Hawaiian Culture

here at Fairmont Kea Lani. [gentle upbeat music plays]

As we go further into the space

is our lei hulu, or our feather lei.

Our feather lei are very detailed,

very beautiful, with vibrant colors.

Traditionally, they would have been made

with native birds' feathers.

Using feathers is traditional.

So feather lei is something that was found

pre-Western context, and it was a status of

your rank within society.

Another key element that we have here

is this statue here.

This is Queen Lili'uokalani,

who was the last reigning monarch

of the Kingdom of Hawai'i.

She was exemplary model

of being Hawaiian and being proud to be Hawaiian.

There was a period of time in Hawai'i,

the Hawaiian language was banned, hula was banned,

Hawaiian arts and crafts was banned,

and it's a very sad time within our culture.

So we bring her here with the hope

that Hawaiian culture, through Hale Kukuna

and the things that we offer and do in here,

by educating our guests, educating our community

and our colleagues, can help to ensure

the Hawaiian culture is re-energized

and will continue for many generations to come.

More managed tourism or educated visitor,

we would love to see them come

and actually even give back while they're here.

Go plant in the lo'i.

Go volunteer.

Go help eradicate non-indigenous plants.

It's an amazing act while you're here,

and you get to learn so much about where you've been

and you carry that in your heart forever.

[surf whooshes]

[Vene] My name is Vene.

I'm a descendant of the island called Maui Nui

or Maui the Great.

Welcome to Ko'ie'ie Loko I'a.

And it is a royal fishpond belonging to our ali'i,

our royalty.

It was built by 10,000 Hawaiian men

and hand carried the stones that you guys see outside here.

So these guys are gonna stack on the outside,

the flatter ones more towards the top,

the big, big ones on the bottom.

[gentle upbeat music plays] Fishponds were things

that beautified the land.

The more fishponds you had,

the wealthier you were considered.

When you guys come to Hawai'i,

you know, you feel like you've contributed

and not just taken.

When we go to a place as Hawaiians, we wanna give.

And the greatest gift you can give a place like this,

I think, is your commitment.

Commitment to helping us guys care for this place

as stewards of the land, as stewards of the planet,

wherever you may be, and you take this mana,

this energy that you have from doing this

back to your family, back to your community.

And then we're building the bridge of aloha.

[water whooshes]

[tool snips]

[Yeshua] It's so pretty.

Love this farm.

This place is awesome.

Wow, look at this guy.

Ready to go.

My name's Yeshua, born and raised here in Hawai'i.

We're at Moon and Salt Farm up in Olinda, Maui.

Just here in the garden

gathering some items for tonight's feast.

Gonna prepare a few things over the fire.

I grew up here in Maui.

I grew up wild, I always say, jumping off waterfalls,

surfing big waves, hunting, fishing.

We named our business Kiawe Outdoor.

Kiawe is our invasive mesquite, and

we found our mission is to educate people

on the issues of the invasives here, to utilize them.

They are absolutely delicious.

It's a great hardware to cook over.

It's one of the many facets of who we are in our identity.

We are so much about the table,

bringing people around to feast well,

create these magical experiences.

To also say, Hey, while you're here,

let's teach you about how special this place is

and how we can keep it that way.

Today we're gonna do a little poke.

Poke was just about, you have this amazing fresh fish

that you went out and caught, and you just wanna serve it

in the most authentic way, and native Hawaiians had

kukui nut, sea salt, and then seaweed.

So talking about some of our invasive species,

the axis deer were originally brought here as a gift,

and 12 deer were dropped off in Kihei.

Now, we have over 100,000.

They are vastly overpopulated.

They need to be managed. [venison sizzles]

So here at Kiawe Outdoor, we love to serve venison

and educate people on the invasive issues that they present.

And they are delicious as well.

A lot of what I get to do as a business owner is

incorporating the history of fashion into what we do.

A lot of my inspiration comes from Maui itself,

comes from Hawaiian heritage that I have,

and from the 'āina around us.

This style with the ruffled collar,

which is, like, one of our signature looks that we have.

Hawaiian culture inspires really everything that we do.

We always think about honoring places,

honoring elements of those places,

and then, how we can really be one with that place.

[Ekolu] The top three things visitors should do.

Volunteer your time.

Stay at the resorts.

Be courteous.

[Vene] What happens is when people come,

and they participate in these activities,

doing restoration work, there's a shift.

We call it mana.

It changes them. [laughs]

Like you've seen today,

you can see how they feel towards the planet,

how they feel towards each other.

It's something bigger than them that they realize

that we're all a part of.

[Kamahiwa] Aloha is the spirit of

being kind, being respectful,

being welcoming, being hospitable to everybody and anybody,

no matter their background, no matter their circumstances.

And Hawaiians have embodied that for generations.

And I always get emotional when I talk about this, but

my biggest goal is that I'm making my kupuna,

my ancestors, proud.

They come from the generation where

they were beaten for speaking Hawaiian.

They were imprisoned for practicing Hawaiian cultures

and practices.

So my goal, my hope, that I can awamu that kuleana,

fulfill that responsibility,

so that my future generations of ohana, of family,

can know who they are and be true

to who they are as Hawaiians. [gentle upbeat music plays]

[Ekolu] The visitors, the travelers that come,

are people that are already open

to these concepts of aloha.

When you can practice aloha,

the doors open wide for you

and you will be accepted as family.

MLB's travel plans for '24: Seoul, Mexico City, London, D.R.

David Adler

David Adler

The MLB World Tour is coming to four international destinations in 2024: London, Mexico City, Seoul and Santo Domingo.

The Seoul Series will be the opener of the 2024 MLB regular season -- and will mark the first MLB regular-season games ever played in Korea.

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association announced the full plans for the four series on Wednesday.

• Seoul Series: Dodgers vs. Padres, March 20-21 (MLB season opener) • Mexico City Series: Astros vs. Rockies, April 27-28 • London Series: Mets vs. Phillies, June 8-9 • Dominican Republic Series: Red Sox vs. Rays, March 9-10 (Spring Training)

• MLB international

"Major League Baseball is incredibly excited for this extensive slate of international games in 2024," Commissioner Rob Manfred said. "Our recent efforts have produced strong enthusiasm around the globe, and we look forward to building on that foundation with returns to Mexico City and London, while also opening the season in Korea for the first time. In addition, we can’t wait to celebrate the tradition of the sport in the Dominican Republic with our visit to Santo Domingo next March. We are thrilled that our fans across four different countries outside the United States and Canada will have the opportunity to see the game’s stars."

The MLB World Tour schedule for next year includes the return of games to the United Kingdom and Mexico for a second consecutive season, after the 2023 London Series between the Cubs and Cardinals and Mexico City Series between the Giants and Padres, in addition to new stops in Korea and the Dominican Republic.

“Players have a deep interest in growing baseball around the world. No matter where they come from, players are linked by a passion for our game that transcends different languages, cultures, and nationalities,” said Tony Clark, the executive director of the MLB Players Association. “The series announced today will allow fans around the globe to gain a first-hand appreciation for the unmatched skill and infectious enthusiasm players display every time they go to work. We are excited to expand our international presence in new communities and celebrate the game we all love.”

Here's a look at each of the four international series in 2024.

Seoul Series

The Dodgers and Padres will open up the 2024 season with two games in Korea from March 20-21.

The Seoul Series will mark the ninth time that the MLB season has opened outside the 50 U.S. states and Canada, and the first time in five years. Previous international openers include:

• 1999 -- Monterrey, Mexico (Rockies vs. Padres) • 2000 -- Tokyo, Japan (Mets vs. Cubs) • 2001 -- San Juan, Puerto Rico (Rangers vs. Blue Jays) • 2004 -- Tokyo, Japan (Rays vs. Yankees) • 2008 -- Tokyo, Japan (Red Sox vs. A's) • 2012 -- Tokyo, Japan (A's vs. Mariners) • 2014 -- Sydney, Australia (Dodgers vs. D-backs) • 2019 -- Tokyo, Japan (A's vs. Mariners)

It will be the Dodgers' first international games since they played the Padres in Mexico in 2018, and their second Opening Day abroad after the 2014 season opener in Australia.

"The Dodgers have a long and proud history of helping to grow the game abroad, highlighted by our trips to Mexico, China and Australia. It's very exciting to add Korea to the list," Dodgers president Stan Kasten said. "I know our players are thrilled to put their talents on display in a country so rich with baseball tradition and talent, including former Dodgers Chan Ho Park, Hee-Seop Choi and Hyun Jin Ryu."

The Padres will be playing internationally for a second straight season, but in a new country, going from the 2023 Mexico City Series to the 2024 Seoul Series. Like the Dodgers, they've also played abroad on Opening Day before, in the inaugural international season opener back in 1999.

"Korea is a great baseball country with a rich tradition, passionate fans, and talented players, including current Padre and San Diego fan favorite Ha-Seong Kim," Padres CEO Erik Greupner said. "The Padres are proud to serve alongside the Dodgers as global ambassadors for the game of baseball with our historic 2024 Korea Series."

Mexico City Series

The second Mexico City Series will feature the Astros and Rockies for a pair of games on April 27 and 28, almost exactly a year after this season's inaugural Mexico City Series.

Both Houston and Colorado last played internationally in Mexico, but in Monterrey, not Mexico City. The Astros played two regular-season games against the Angels there in 2019, and the Rockies played an exhibition series against the D-backs that same year.

The Astros have played exhibition games in Mexico City before, in 2016 against the Padres and 2004 against the Marlins.

London Series

The London Series returns for its third edition overall, with the Mets and Phillies facing off at London Stadium on June 8 and 9.

The Mets will be playing abroad for the first time since 2010, when they faced the Marlins in Puerto Rico. But they're no stranger to international games, having participated in both MLB's first-ever international regular season games in 1996 in Mexico and MLB's first-ever regular-season games in Japan in 2000.

• 2024 London Series will feature NL East rivalry in Mets-Phils

"Interest in baseball is growing all over the world, and to bring the Mets' 'never-say-die' attitude to sports fans in London is a tremendous honor," Mets owner Steve Cohen said. "Our Queens family is ready to show London a great time with exciting baseball and amazing experiences that create new fans and build the Mets community throughout the United Kingdom."

The Phillies have never played regular-season games internationally, and have left the U.S. and Canada only once, over 50 years ago, for a pair of exhibition games against the Pirates in San Juan in 1977.

"Major League Baseball has done an excellent job of expanding its footprint internationally, and we are honored to play a role in that effort as part of the 2024 London Series," Phillies managing partner John Middleton said. "This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase our players' talents and highlight the excitement that comes with a Phillies-Mets matchup for our fans in the UK and for those who have never attended a baseball game."

Dominican Republic Series

In addition to the three international regular-season series planned for in 2024, the Red Sox and Rays will play a Spring Training series in Santo Domingo at Estadio Quisqueya from March 9-10.

"This unique opportunity builds on our long-standing connection to the Dominican Republic and allows us to celebrate the remarkable talents and rich cultural heritage of a country whose passion for the game has distinctly shaped our organization," Red Sox president Sam Kennedy said. "From the players who have passed through our Dominican Republic Academy to those who have helped us win championships, we have been fortunate to witness the profound impact of Dominican players within our game, and we are thrilled to be able to bring Red Sox baseball to such a vibrant baseball community next year."

Exhibition games are also a key part of the MLB World Tour, which includes up to 16 exhibition games being played internationally between 2023 and ‘26, as well as up to 24 regular-season games spanning Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Japan's Hotspots

Kyoto was once Japan’s capital city and the largest city in Japan. It is no surprise then, that it is filled with endless things to do. Arrive in style on a bullet train – reaching speeds of 200 mph. Spend your days wandering through soaring bamboo groves, amble through moss-covered Japanese gardens or admire some of the 3,000 temples and shrines that Kyoto is home to, many nestled amongst the shores of the Kamogawa River.

Hiroshima & Miyajima

Hiroshima is the capital of the Chugoku region in the South West of Japan. Despite the atomic bomb that was dropped on the city in 1945, the city is flourishing and is a fascinating inclusion to a Japanese trip.
