The draws to Aruba are obvious: miles of glorious white-sand beach, the incredible Arikok National Park, and a cute, compact capital, Oranjestad, which is well suited to the short strolls favored by cruise-ship passengers.

More About Aruba

Aruba is the smallest in a chain of islands referred to as the ABC Islands - Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. Located just 18 miles from the coast of Venezuela, visitors to Aruba are quick to note the dry climate, blowing tradewinds, and laid-back charm of the island. While Aruba is small in size, the island packs a punch for entertainment, nightlife, and adventure.

Visitors can spend the day exploring the local beaches, snorkeling or diving at shipwreck sites around the island, getting in on the action at an island casino, or dining al fresco at some of the island hot spots. Whether it's the beaches, the climate, the entertainment, or the history, there is plenty to see and do in Aruba.

Sargassum/Seaweed Advisory

Sargassum is a free-floating seaweed that is especially prolific in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. While beneficial to ocean life, these large free-floating seaweed mats often wash up on beaches. The amount of seaweed on the beaches fluctuates based on the time of year and ocean currents. While resorts do their best to maintain the beaches for their guests, you may experience some inconvenience during your stay.

Top Experiences

Beaches : The white-sand beaches and turquoise waters of Aruba are stunning. Each has its personality, so be sure to explore the island to find your ideal beachfront.

Dining : Visitors to the island will find local delicacies and international favorites throughout Aruba. Stobas, a local stew, and Pastechi, a deep-fried pastry, are examples of some local favorites.

Gaming : The island of Aruba permits gambling so if you are so inclined, try your luck at a local casino.

Nightlife : After dark, Aruba turns up the music. Visitors will find plenty of entertainment throughout the island.

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Aruba

Here's everything you need to do, where to stay, and the best time to visit.

Jacqueline Dole is a freelance food and travel journalist based in Maine. A lifelong New Englander, her work has appeared in Travel + Leisure , Food & Wine, TimeOut, Insider, Thrillist, Eater, and more. With a background as a pastry chef, she’s always on the lookout for the next best snack. She is a theme park enthusiast and expert, and embroidered hotel robes, amazing pools, and hot dogs are some of her favorite things.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, neighborhoods to visit, how to get around.

Flavio Vallenari/Getty Images

The first time I visited Aruba, I was two years old. My grandparents had purchased a timeshare shortly before I was born at a small resort, just across from the world-famous Eagle Beach . I was lucky enough to travel with them almost every year, trading the frigid winters in New England for the tropical temperatures and sunny skies of Aruba. Visiting Aruba every year became a part of my identity, my love for the island literally written into my wedding vows. There’s something about the turquoise waters, pristine white sand, and incomparable sunsets that keep people coming back, year after year. I've visited the island more than 30 times, continuing to make my annual pilgrimage each winter.

In the mid-1980s, Aruba became an autonomous entity of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Following the closure of their oil factory, the government pivoted to make tourism the driving economic force on the island. Aruba invested heavily in marketing, and between 1986 and 1996, tourism grew at almost twice the rate in the Caribbean. At just 20 miles long, the island is easy to navigate and explore. While resort development continues to flood the island and hotels rise across the horizon, some parts of Aruba have remained the same over the years: crystal-clear water that’s perfect for snorkeling, an ever-present breeze that keeps the island from getting too hot, and temperatures that always hang around the mid-80s.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Book a room at the Boardwalk Boutique Hotel for a laid-back stay. This family-run property has just 46 rooms, a far cry from the bustling high-rise district, and you can even grill on your own barbecue.
  • Catch one of Aruba’s famous sunsets from a catamaran cruise and enjoy one-of-a-kind views of the island.
  • Drive out to Savaneta for lunch at Zeerover, an oceanfront restaurant where the menu features whatever the fisherman caught that day.
  • Spend a day on Eagle Beach, consistently voted one of the best beaches in the world.
  • Sign up for a tour around Arikok National Park and spot the natural pools, caves, and bridges while letting someone else do the challenging off-road driving.

Divi & Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusive

Divi & Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusive are sister resorts located on Druif Beach, between downtown Oranjestad and Eagle Beach. The all-inclusive properties are home to more than a dozen restaurants, half a dozen bars, and a mile-long stretch of sand. With activities and classes throughout the day and an adjacent golf course and casino, there’s no need to leave the grounds if you’re looking for ultimate relaxation.

Bucuti & Tara

Bucuti & Tara is the Caribbean’s first and only certified carbon neutral hotel. Voted as one of Travel + Leisure readers' favorite resorts in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas in 2023 , the adults-only property stands out as a leader in sustainable travel without sacrificing luxury. Guests are granted a personal concierge upon check-in, guaranteed sun loungers on the beach complete with on-demand beverage service, and daily breakfast.

Boardwalk Boutique Hotel

Boardwalk Boutique Hotel is a family-run property in the middle of a former coconut plantation. With just 46 private casitas, the resort offers a more intimate option for guests seeking more laid-back accommodations. The casitas include kitchenettes, barbecues, and outdoor dining sets. The resort is a short walk or shuttle ride from Palm Beach, where guests can reserve lounge chairs free of charge and enjoy beachside food and beverage service from the neighboring Ritz-Carlton.

Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba

Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort is located in downtown Oranjestad. Guests can choose rooms in the adults-only Marina building or at the nearby Ocean Suites with direct beach access. One of the highlights of this property is the complimentary access via water taxi to Renaissance Island, home of the Instagram-famous Flamingo Beach (day passes to the island are also available for purchase to non-guests). The island has private waterfront cabanas, beachside hammocks, snorkeling, kayaking, and food and beverage available on site.

Visit Arikok National Park.

Arikok National Park, located about 40 minutes from the high-rise hotel district, spans more than 20 percent of the island. Rather than rent a Jeep to explore on your own, I’d advise first-time visitors to join a tour instead. The terrain is rough and navigating an auto insurance claim is the last thing anyone wants to do on vacation. “I’d recommend first-time visitors explore Arikok National Park on one of our many Jeep tours. They’ll be able to swim in the natural pool, visit the caves, and immerse themselves in Aruba’s natural beauty,” says Sjeidy Feliciano, North America marketing director for the Aruba Tourism Authority. “One of the most popular sites is the Quadirikiri Cave, famous for its two chambers, illuminated by the sunlight streaming through the holes in the roof of the cave. Meanwhile, the Fontein Cave is known for having paintings from the Arawak people.” Popular tour operator De Palm Tours offers several trips that guide visitors around the park on off-road safaris.

Sail on a catamaran cruise.

One of my favorite things to do every year is take a catamaran cruise to catch the sunset from the water. It’s a great activity for all ages and always a highlight — The Pelican , which includes snacks and an open bar, sets sail from a convenient location in the high-rise district. It also offers daytime snorkeling expeditions with several stops, including at the popular the 400-foot-long Antilla Shipwreck from World War II.

Stop at a local grocery store.

Given Aruba is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, there’s a lot of Dutch influence on the island and this extends to the grocery store as well. I always make time to stop at a local supermarket to browse the aisles, and there’s no better place to do that in Aruba than Super Food . Whether you want to pick up some fresh stroopwafels, stock up on some Gouda to bring home, or try a bottle of the island’s famous Hot Delight hot sauce made with Aruban-grown Madame Jeanette hot peppers, this popular market is a must-visit.

Swim at Baby Beach.

Baby Beach is one of the best for families in Aruba. The large, half-moon lagoon has shallow crystal-clear waters, paired with calm waves thanks to a human-made breakwater. This makes it the ideal place for kids, snorkelers, and visitors looking for a relaxed spot to swim. The beach is about 45 minutes from the high-rise district and accessible via rental car, taxi, or bus.

Orietta Gaspari/Getty Images

My first visit to Zeerover was about 10 years ago when someone at Charlie’s Bar , one of Aruba’s oldest businesses, suggested it to me. Since then, the fish house has become a staple of every trip and, frankly, my favorite meal all year. Located in Savaneta, the restaurant is situated on a pier overlooking the ocean where you can watch the fishing boats dock. The menu features the catch of the day — think wahoo, snapper, or my favorite, barracuda. Fried head-on shrimp are always available, as are plantains, french fries, steamed cornbread, and pickled onions. Fish is ordered by the pound and eaten at picnic tables on the covered dock at the restaurant. There’s truly nothing like sharing a bucket of Aruban-brewed Balashi beers and a basket of seafood from here. It's worth noting Zeerover is closed on Mondays.

Eduardo’s Beach Shack

In recent years, Eduardo’s Beach Shack has skyrocketed in popularity. What started as a small smoothie shack on the beach now has three locations across the island. The spot offers fresh juices, smoothies, and bowls, and the items are all customizable and made to order with fresh ingredients.

Papiamento Restaurant

Set inside a more than 100-year-old manor, Papiamento is a romantic bistro that offers seating in its antique-filled dining room or on the poolside terrace. “ Papiamento is one of my favorites for a unique Aruba experience” says Feliciano. “This family-owned restaurant is also a museum, but it's set inside an old Aruba cunucu house. The food is delicious ... and it truly is a slice of Aruba.” The restaurant also features keshi yena , a stuffed cheese that's Aruba's national dish.

The Pastechi House

Located in downtown Oranjestad, The Pastechi House serves a large variety of one of Aruba’s most traditional breakfast and snack items: pastechi . Similar to an empanada, the deep-fried dough pocket features a pastry crust stuffed with an array of fillings, from Gouda to conch.

Mark A Paulda/Getty Images

The best time to visit Aruba is from February to August because of the great weather and lower prices. “May through September is also a good time to visit, as it’s after winter in the U.S. when we have lots of visitors,” says Feliciano. “Prices will be lower, and you’ll find better deals for stays. Yes, it will be warm, and it's important to use sun protection, but the waters are refreshing and the trade winds keep us cool.” From September to January, the island experiences its rainy season, which peaks in November. During this time, the rain generally comes in short spurts rather than day-long storms, but it can interrupt plans to lounge by the beach or pool all day.

The most popular time to visit Aruba is from December through March — the high season — as many residents from the northeastern U.S. flee colder temperatures and, of course, snow. During this time, occupancy at resorts is high and reservations for popular restaurants, rental cars, and island excursions get booked up in advance. Carnival in Aruba officially begins in November, but the majority of the celebrations happen in January and February. These include lavish parades with elaborate floats, beautiful costumes, and live music.

Queen Beatrix International Airport is located in Oranjestad and has flights to and from the U.S., Canada, South America, Europe, and several other Caribbean islands. There are several direct flights from major U.S. cities, primarily on the East Coast. And visiting is fairly easy: “To ensure an easy flight experience, travelers will go through U.S. customs at the Aruba airport before their flight home,” says Feliciano. That being said, the time it takes to clear customs can be notoriously lengthy. Be sure to arrive at the airport at least three hours before your flight back to allow enough time to complete the process. While it won’t always take that long, especially on weekdays or during the slower season, I’ve cut things too close on more than one occasion and had to run to catch my flight.

LanaCanada/Getty Images

Home to the high-rise hotels, Palm Beach is where most vacationers will spend the majority of their time on the island. Most hotels have an on-site casino, in addition to several restaurants. Palm Beach has several water sport shacks where visitors can sign up for Jet Ski rentals, tubing, banana boats, and more. While this beach is beautiful, it's often crowded. It's a great spot for families as there's no shortage of activities, but don’t expect privacy here. Located across the street from the beach, the Palm Beach Plaza Mall is a large outdoor complex with shops, restaurants, and entertainment like a movie theater and bowling alley.

Eagle Beach

Eagle Beach is where most of the timeshares and low-rise resorts can be found. Continuously dubbed one of the best beaches in the world , it's much more quiet than neighboring Palm Beach and ideal for visitors seeking privacy and space while still having access to the same picturesque setting. There are some places to rent beach chairs and palapas here if you’re not staying at a property that includes these amenities or visiting as a day guest on a cruise.

The capital of Aruba, Oranjestad is home to colorful Dutch Colonial architecture, restaurants, shopping, and a cruise port. There are walking tours that focus on the history of the island, as well as a trolley that takes riders past the Parliament and several historical museums. In the downtown area, visitors will find high-end stores such as Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci, making it a popular spot for duty-free souvenir shopping. Conversely, it’s also a great place to pick up typical travel tchotchkes, like T-shirts and magnets.

Courtesy of Divi Aruba

While there’s no need to rent a car in Aruba, those who prefer to explore rather than exclusively spend their days lounging on the beach may prefer to have their own transportation, whether it's for a few days or more. Rather than renting from a large international brand, I’ve had better luck with locally owned companies, like Jay's Car Rental . While most local car rental locations are not based at the airport, they offer transportation between the terminal and rental office; some will even pick up your car directly from the resort if you don’t need it for the entirety of your stay.

There's public transportation across the island via Arubus , the public bus service that travels to nearly all the popular tourist destinations. The bus offers single-ride or day passes at just $10 per day. Taxis are also widely available in most tourist areas, but I’d encourage you to schedule service ahead of time for anything time-sensitive, like dinner reservations.

It is also a good place to unwind and snack before passing through security.

What are the transfer options from AUA to the city centre?

You have just touched down in Oranjestad's AUA from a flight, and you want to get inside the city. Taxis, shuttles, car rentals, and public buses are your best bets. Arubus bus service operates on Arubus Lines 8, 2, and 1 every 15 minutes from Reina Beatrix Airport Bus Stop, just outside the airline hub. Car rental kiosks are within the airport terminal, a short distance from customs. Aruba taxis, on the other hand, are outside the airline hub. Taxis and shuttles from AUA can easily get you to any local destination.

How do I get to Mt. Jamanota from Oranjestad Airport?

At 617 ft, Mt. Jamanota is the highest point in Aruba and is likely to be seen from just about anywhere on the island. The peak forms part of the Arikok National Park and is about 6 mi from Oranjestad Airport, so it’s a short drive away.

What are some popular festivals in Aruba around which I can plan a flight?

Before booking your flight to Aruba, you should be aware of some high quality events like the Aruba International Film Festival, which occurs each year in June, and the Dande Music Festival during the last week of December. However, the granddaddy of them all is Aruba Carnival, a four-week annual event that commences in January.

Is there a place to exchange cash at Oranjestad Airport?

Yes, there is. There are several ATMs operated by RBC Royal Bank, CMB Bank and a branch of CMB Bank on the Ground Floor of the terminal building, but you should also know that US dollars are generally accepted in Aruba. Therefore, you may only want to have some florins on hand if necessary.

Are there any good beaches near Oranjestad Airport?

Yes, there are. In Aruba, good beaches are scattered around the island, however there is a good quantity of them to be found along its western coast, north of Oranjestad Airport, including Manchebo Beach, Eagle Beach, Palm Beach and Araschi Beach.

This makes it a perfect family activity for any travel itinerary when planning flights from the US to Aruba, especially since the park is only around a 15m drive from Oranjestad Airport.
  • Vacationers taking flights from the US to Aruba should consider staying in the district of Santa Cruz, which is centrally located on the island, ensuring easy access for journeying to points east, west, north and south of the island. It is also only 20m from the airport, so no additional flights are required.
  • Aruba’s west coast from California Lighthouse in the north to Colorado Point in the south is dotted with coral reefs and is a perfect area to do some snorkeling. Therefore, if you’re looking for an excellent island getaway not far from home, a flight from the US to Aruba should be high on your list.
  • The eastern coast of Aruba is filled with many breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea, including the Natural Pool, Quadirikiri and the Colorado Point Lighthouse, so once you get settled in after your flight to Oranjestad Airport, you may desire spending a day discovering some of them and creating a few memories.

Top 5 airlines flying to Aruba

Really bad baggage handling. Had my Rimowa bag badly damaged at the latches.

It was pretty good I was worried with the short Layover that I might not catch my connection but the gate was there

It was good until there was a 3 hour delay because there was not any pilots to fly the plane.

There was plenty of overhead room but half of the passengers were told they had to check their carryon bags. My partner and I checked in as early as possible and our seats were split across the aisle.

Friendly flight attendants. Comfort plus seats were very comfortable and had lots of leg room. 10A and 10 B.

I've flown many many times on Northwest and then Delta. The crew on this flight were absolutely the best I've had the pleasure of being looked after by.

Flew first class so everything was great. But maybe because the flights were red eye, no meals were served, just chips. I flew Alaska Air 1st class at 9PM (2 hour flight) and they served beef short rib sliders!

Had to change aircraft due to a faulty door. Surprisingly it only caused about an hour and a half of delay. Delta handled this situation as well as can be expected.

Awful. Flight was continuously getting delayed and gates kept changing without any reason. Flight was delayed for more then 3 hours

Paid premium for Delta only to be on safe but tired old 767 with ancient cabin in mediocre condition. Poor wifi and horrible inflight entertainment. Hardly a premium experience. Should have flown SW and had fun flight crew and no pretense

terrible. Because I felt very unwell during the flight. How do they leave a woman alone in the middle of 2 men? an obese man who was falling on top of me.

They put me on a chair in between two men, one overweight who was almost falling on top of me, and the other was even uncomfortable because I was half falling because of what the other was pushing me. I stayed with. my feet were swollen from fluid retention and from being unable to accommodate myself. it was very uncomfortable. I asked for help but they told me that the flight was full and they couldn't help me. I got off the plane almost unable to walk due to the inflammation. and then at FLL airport I asked for help because I couldn't go to my next flight, which was a connection.

The walk from baggage claim to the taxi is very difficult for older people I will never fly into JFK again. It is physically challenging

Overall fine but both ways for this trip was delayed.

Flight was delayed by almost 5 hours. Suitcase was not loaded despite the flight being near empty (my colleagues’ suitcases did reach JFK, unlike mine). Had to argue on phone to get JetBlue to deliver the case to my hotel. Never again

The flight was excellent. The crew was welcoming and attentive.

Great! I love Jet Blue. My favorite airline! Very efficient, clean and timely.

Run out of snack choices. Why are the seats not padded for your butt? Are we sitting on blocks of wood or metal for $250-300 a pop? This ain’t spirit. Let’s get it together people

We were told that our flight would be delayed for 90+ minutes because of weather, so we went to get something to eat only to have them randomly start boarding 15 minutes after the announcement, with no warning.

Entertainment... No earphones passed out. Many including me couldn't use the TV. Legroom was good. Crew was indifferent and a bit surly. Free wifi was a nice convenience. Check in desk location was unknown. Gate number on the boarding passes was wrong.

After the morning frenzy of 35 min wait through CLT security at 4;30 AM, it was nice to have a smooth pleasant boarding experience. This 6:30 AM flight was not full. We were able to get seated swiftly and took off promptly. Nice touch they distributed the old fashioned headsets with 8 mm jacks. Snacks were decent and arrival was uneventful.

My window shade didn’t work. So I missed coming into my city. ☹️

Flight was delayed in the gate by 5 hours and ultimately cancelled- rebooking service by United agents was terrible

Everything was pretty good except for food. They need to improve on it compared to other airlines.

Flight was delayed due to the late arrival of the catering truck, which is quite unacceptable. There was a beverage service, but no pretzel, or cookie, or nuts were served in coach.

Not worth the premium paid for the first class ticket

Not worth the price of premium class ticket paid, felt more like steerage.

Flighty delayed on boarding - then group 1 had to check their carry on bags but groups 3 and beyond could carry bags on - very inconvenient for weekend business trip with no checked baggage. Then delayed on the runway - before take off. No communication from pilot on why or how long. Wifi/Entertainment didn't work for 4+ flight. Upon arrival, attendants announced wrong carousel for baggage claim - everyone was waiting at the wrong place for their checked bags. This was a mess united!

I flew Delta last week and United Airlines is a poor substitute mechanical problems with the plane and shitty food among other things made my travel experience what’s become to be expected from United no way is it ever worth the money they make us pay

I had a great flight. Everything went smoothly and the flight arrived early.

Everything was fine once we actually got on our flight. It was more then annoying they canceled (delayed) our flight. We lost out on a day of our trip along with money on our stay. Plus we had to book another hotel. So expensive.

This flight was canceled and delayed several times without explanation. The plane was freezing cold and no wifi for messaging. Getting off the plane was terribly unorganized and felt like it took forever….

The flight was delayed several times without explanation. The seats were terribly uncomfortable and wifi isn’t included. All these make for a less than ideal flight.

The flights was delayed by hours and it was the firmest landing I have experienced in my life. My back is still sore.

Internet service was erratic. Crew service was poor and slow. My luggage on this non-stop flight was lost and not recovered

Terrible. I didn’t fly and I had an important meeting the next day.

Missed this flight due to the first AA flight delay

Equipment swap led to 2+ hour delay on international flight. And to top it off, boarding took forever.

Wretched scheduling - they got themselves into a critical crew situation and didn’t try to address it until 15 minutes before they had to cancel my flight

They cancelled two flight and got us onto another airline, which was also delayed.

Terrible legroom, seats do not recline, tray table the size of an iPhone, delayed flight, have to pay 5$ to get a cup of water onboard.

Could have TV/Movie and some water ou soda free

Flight was good and clean but delayed over an hour on the return flight.

The non stop flight and able to go into Atlantic City airport. They could lower the prices. It starts out low but then if you want to bring luggage and pick your seat the price goes up quite a bit.

Flight got diwngraded last minute and left us stranded. I was told I’ll be given credit for my luggage and seat upgrades but haven’t got anything yet

We can’t predict circumstances like this ahead of time, but I give your staff a hats off for immediately giving us updated informations.

It was nice! There was a very unhappy child in front of us and the flight attendant did a great job calming the child. I was impressed.

The plane was not on time for boarding or departure or arrivals.

EVERYTHING WAS WONDERFUL HOSPITALITY THE HELP.THE SEATING FRIENDLY ALWAYS HAVE A GOOD RIDE NOT ONE BAD EXPERIENCE WITH THEM

This was the smoothest flight I have had in awhile. I was also offered an exit row seat for a great upgrade cost and was able to sleep almost thr whole flight due to comfort and a smooth flight. We left on time and arrived on time.

Also does the island still smell like sewage? 😨

Would it be drastically better if I waited until October or November to go?

Thank you!!

3 replies to this topic

' class=

The island does have a sewage treatment plant issue (too many people, too much building, not enough capacity) but we have never had any issues during our trips.

August/September are the hottest months on the island. October is slightly cooler (emphasis on the word slightly!) but chance of rain increases. In fact: rain season starts in October (ending by the end of December). So you can expect an occasional shower or two in October. So I'd go for September if I were you.

As for the island smelling like sewage... what? where? That's new to me (native here)! There are two areas that I can think of that do have an issue with sewage smell (one right next to the Parliament building, the other next to Bubali plas: a wetland and bird sanctuary). Neither should really be an inconvenience. So you'll be fine!

Aruba’s Relaxathon: How to Participate

trip to aruba

  • Destinations
  • Mexico and Caribbean

Tourism initiatives (unsurprisingly) revolve around attracting more visitors. Even the world’s most popular destinations benefit from marketing and promotional efforts… including Aruba .

This year, Aruba’s tourism authority has something entirely unique on its agenda: an inaugural Relaxathon . And it’s brought on one of the world’s most recognizable Olympians, snowboarder Shaun White, to host the event.

So, what’s a professional snowboarder doing in one of the world’s hottest tropical destinations? And what’s behind this unusual event from Aruba’s tourism authority? I’m just as intrigued as you.

Inside Aruba’s Relaxathon

Aruba’s Relaxathon is a straightforward scheme. On June 13, 2024, Aruba will host an hour-long competition that will include 100 participants.

Only the most relaxed will be crowned champion. At the moment, the rubric remains vague, at best.

Officially, whoever can ‘keep calmest’ wins—which makes me think participants are in for some wild and crazy distractions. I have no idea how host Shaun White fits into this agenda, but it’s upping the intrigue for me.

Most likely, he’ll host the event and guide participants through the setup. But I wouldn’t be surprised if some athletic antics were also scheduled.

The competition’s location hasn’t been announced yet, but Aruba is a small island . I doubt anyone will have trouble finding it. When the competition ends, officials will select gold, silver, and bronze prize winners.

According to the press release , winners will be determined by ‘science’. Whatever that means.

  • Gold medal: Two round-trip flights to Aruba, four nights at a luxury hotel, dinner for two, and a massage for two
  • Silver medal : Three nights at a luxury hotel, dinner for two, and spa treatments for two
  • Bronze medal : Private sunset cruise, private tour of Arikok National Park, and massages for two

trip to aruba

Is it worth participating?

I wouldn’t recommend flying to Aruba with the hopes of winning a free return trip. However, if you’re heading to the island on June 13, then I’d recommend elbowing your way into the Relaxathon. Even the bronze prize package would be worth setting aside an hour of your time.

And what would you be doing… lounging for an hour on the beach elsewhere? Even if participating doesn’t sound like your type of thing, I’m sure it will be an event equally geared toward spectators.

In other words, there’s bound to be a few laughs for everyone involved, whether pretending to relax on a towel or watching from the sidelines.

Aruba events calendar

The Relaxathon will conclude after an hour—but the festivities don’t necessarily end there. Aruba’s busy season runs from December to April, which means that summer months like June are a great time to visit and avoid crowds.

One event that should be on your radar if you’re in Aruba in June is the Dush Aruba This Way, a weekly party at the Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort . You’ll get to dance the night away in local style.

I’d also recommend checking out the annual International Regatta . This sailing competition is annually hosted on Surfside Beach. There are events for sailboats, yachts, kitesurfers, and windsurfers. You can watch the most competitive sailors from the ABC islands: Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao.

No Physical Passport Is Needed When Visiting This Caribbean Island

  • Aruba launched AHOP program for passport-free travel starting in 2024.
  • Travelers can use digitized passports for quicker entry into Aruba.
  • Carry passports regardless due to airline policies and entry requirements in other countries.

The tropical Caribbean island of Aruba is famous for many things. It is one of the constituent countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is noted for its Dutch architecture, boasts breathtaking beaches, and now people will be able to enter the country without a passport. This is just another reason why Aruba is unlike any other island on earth .

The Safest Caribbean Islands For A Family Vacation

For some, the ability to visit a country visa-free may just be the cherry on top of why Aruba is such a perfect destination for first-time international travelers . Not only that, but Aruba was voted to have the best beach in the Caribbean . All the more reason to visit, with or without a passport.

UPDATE: 2024/06/06 10:58 EST BY ERYNN RUIZ

Americans Can Leave Their Passport Behind When Visiting This Caribbean Island In 2024

While Americans technically must possess a passport to travel to Aruba, digital passports are the newest and simplest way to travel. This feature has been updated with more information on release and trial dates for AHOP, insider insights into traveling to Aruba, and new photos.

AHOP: The New System To Enter Aruba Without Presenting A Physical Passport

Aruba is one of the first countries to permit tourists to come without showing their physical passports.

A new trend being started around the world is to travel passport-free. To be sure, everyone will need to have a passport, but they won't need to physically have a passport with them to enter the country.

The digitized passports can help avoid common problems like ripped passports and other travel issues .

  • From March 2024, Americans can participate in the AHOP program using a digital passport.
  • On June 30th, 2024, pre-production concludes.
  • October 1st, 2024 is th "go-live" date for AHOP.

The program on Aruba is called Aruba Happy One Pass (or AHOP for short). Visitors will need to complete pre-boarding verification on the AHOP app before flying. The physical passports are converted into digital credentials that are retrieved during the biometric check when arriving in Aruba (the biometric check is normally facial recognition).

  • AHOP Adoption Date: March 2024 (pilot project)

This is part of the digital passport program that is spreading around the world. The idea is that travelers will be able to leave their passports at home and just bring a digital version on their phones or other electronic devices. The hope is that the new system will help expedite border control and perhaps even reduce the risks of fraud and theft of passports.

"To travel to Aruba, every traveler is still required to have their physical passport with them. An Immigration officer can, at any time during the journey, request to see your physical passport." AHOP

AHOP is designed to follow IATA regulations and successful tests have already been carried out.

It should be noted that for now, all Americans ought to still take their passports with them to Aruba as passports are generally required to reenter the United States.

Aruba May Be Passport-Free, But Carry Your Passport Anyway

While passport-free travel may be the way of the future, everyone should still carry their passports.

It remains to be seen just how successful passport-free travel is going to be around the world. Aruba is not the first country to adopt passport-free travel. Another famous example is Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, which has been permitting people to exit without their physical passports since September 2023.

Other countries like Singapore and Malaysia (and even The Philippines) are also planning to implement it in the future .

Reasons To Still Carry Passports:

  • Passports may be needed to check in to the flight
  • Passports may be needed in the next country
  • Passports will be needed to return to the USA
  • Passports may be needed to hire cars, etc.

For now, everyone still needs to have a valid passport. Plus, everyone should continue to carry their physical passports, regardless of what they are required to show at immigration. It is common for hotels and other organizations to require a passport upon check-in or for car rentals.

Sometimes it also takes the police a while to catch up with their country's visa policies, and they may still be confused if tourists tell them they don't have their passports.

Regardless of the destination country's policy, everyone should check the airline's policy (they may still be required for check-in).

Perhaps the most important reason to carry a passport is that, while Aruba or another country may not require the passport, other countries do (including the USA and Canada) for their citizens going home.

  • Refer to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection for documents required of American citizens returning to the USA.

10 Most Beautiful Aruba Beaches To See On This Sun-Soaked Caribbean Island

Aruba: more than a tropical & timeless remanent colonial outpost, aruba is one of the most stunning caribbean islands with world-famous colonial architecture.

Aruba is one of the constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and, together with Bonaire and Curaçao, is known as the ABC islands. Aruba is located around 20 miles off the coast of Venezuela and is one of the top destinations in the Caribbean. The island has a dry climate (somewhat unusual in the Caribbean).

  • Size: 69 square miles
  • Population: 108,000

While Aruba is not a fully independent state, it is not a territory either and is officially called the Country of Aruba. The citizens of Aruba have Dutch nationality.

The capital and largest city of Aruba is Oranjestad (which is one of the main attractions in Aruba) . The culture of Aruba has had a diverse influence, including from the Dutch, Spanish, Venezuelans, Chinese, Africans, and the general Caribbean.

Aruba has much more on offer than just beaches and is worth a visit, whether you need to bring a physical passport or not.

Post date: Jun 6 2024

Date: Jun 6 2024

By: Travelweek

PALMA DE MALLORCA — Iberostar is heading to Aruba, with its first hotel on the island expected to start welcoming guests in late 2024.

Nestled on Eagle Beach just 15 minutes from Queen Beatrix International Airport and 10 minutes from downtown Oranjestad, the five-star JOIA Aruba by Iberostar will open with 240 suites, some with swim-up features and Jacuzzis on the terrace. Other amenities include a 10,000-plus-square foot Convention Center, a spa, casino and a fully-equipped Fit & Fun gym. Plus, golf enthusiasts can enjoy 18 holes at Iberostar’s Tierra del Sol championship golf course, which was recently recognized on USA Today’s 2024 ’10 Best Readers’ Choice Award for Best Caribbean Golf Course’ list.

The resort will also offer three main dining options, including a buffet-style restaurant and two themed restaurants specializing in Caribbean cuisine and open-fire cooking. A terrace bar will also be available to guests, a perfect spot to watch Aruba’s famed sunsets.

Also notable, the hotel will open its doors as 100% electric; it was developed using passive design principals to enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. It will also implement lower-impact operations and progressive waste management techniques to minimize emissions.

Trump can't travel to these 38 countries now that he's a convicted felon

Former President Donald Trump walks to make comments to media.

Felons lose various rights upon being convicted, from their right to own a firearm to serving on a jury or voting — and former presidents aren't excluded from those restrictions.

Former President Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying records in his New York hush money trial, making him a convicted felon. Now he'll have to navigate what that status means for his rights as any other American felon — but also as one worldwide.

That's because traveling is another right affected by felonies, with 38 nations — including the U.S. — either denying felons entry upfront or denying them if their criminal record is discovered, according to World Population Review . And with the public stage that Trump is on, that latter scenario would probably occur few and far between.

This may affect the Republican presidential front-runner's ability to fulfill his foreign duties if he's reelected come November. And although worldly leaders could make an exception in their travel bans for Trump, it's unclear which countries would be willing to do so, particularly as some of them have been on rocky ground with the former president.

For example, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and former President Trump clashed publicly, and Canada reserves the right to refuse entrance to felons upfront. Similarly, with Ukraine, felons are denied if discovered, and Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's tumultuous relationship escalated into the former's impeachment.

President Joe Biden speaks as he meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Path to the White House

Which foreign leaders do Biden and Trump get along with?

It's also worth noting that four of the G-7 nations have felon travel bans: Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada and the U.S. The group meets regularly to discuss international topics, and the unannounced 2025 date is set to be hosted in Canada. That would mean Prime Minister Trudeau would have to make a decision on bending his felon-travel ban for a potential President Trump or he'd exclude the leader from physical attendance.

Other countries included in the list are some that Trump has touted on the campaign trail as policy-related focal points such as Mexico and border laws, Israel and its war in Gaza, and "stopping Chinese espionage," according to his website. Mexico denies felons if discovered, while Israel and China deny them upfront.

Again, World Population Review says it's unlikely border officials will ask about a person's criminal record upon their arrival, but with Trump's public status they won't necessarily need to. And some only deny entry to the felons who are deemed a security risk.

Come November, here's the full list of countries that may have to decide if and how they'll change their current rules now that a former president is affected by them for the first time, with data from World Population Review.

Countries that don't allow convicted felons to enter:

  • New Zealand
  • South Africa
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

Countries that will deny entry to felons if discovered:

  • Dominican Republic
  • Philippines
  • South Korea
  • United Arab Emirates
