Load up. Or not.
Whether you're after a lightweight singletrack shredder or sticking to the pavement on your commute to work, Marlin is compatible with all the gear you need to have a great ride.
5 things to do before every mountain bike ride
Do this quick pre-ride safety check before you hit the trails.
Product features
Will my bike have a curved top tube.
Smaller frames have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. Larger frame sizes have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don’t have the same issues with standover height.
Fit for every rider
Marlin comes in seven frame sizes to suit riders of any height, and Smart Wheel Size ensures you’re on the fastest wheel that fits. The smallest sizes even come with short-reach brake levers and narrower handlebars that give smaller riders better comfort and control.
High tech, high value
Marlin looks and feels great. It’s packed with features usually found only on more expensive bikes, like a stylish frame with internal shift cable and brake hose routing, which can help your cables last longer by protecting them from the elements.
Upgrade your pedals and love your bike more
Pedals are two of the five touchpoints that connect you with your bike, and even though this bike comes with a pair, upgrading to pedals that boost control and grip will greatly improve your ride. See the pedal guide and find the best pedals for your riding style. We recommend flat pedals for simple versatility.
Rear kickstand mount
Chainstay mounts make it easy to install a rear kickstand that stays out of your way and supports bikes of all sizes. No more laying or leaning.
Rack mounts
Going for a long ride? Rack mounts make carrying accessories a breeze.
Blendr stem
Bontrager stem technology lets you clip your gear directly to the stem for clean looks, maximum user friendliness.
Internal cable routing
We route shift and brake cables through the frame to keep things clean and simple. And it looks great, too.
Mechanical disc brakes
Reliable stopping power in all conditions, including wet and muddy.
How tall are you?
To measure your height, stand straight up, barefoot, with your back, heels, shoulders and head all touching a wall. While looking straight ahead, place a book or straight edge on your head and slowly push it against the wall. Your straight edge should be parallel with the floor. Mark the spot where the bottom of the book is touching the wall. The distance from the marked spot to the floor is your height.
What is your inseam?
How to measure: Stand barefoot with your back straight and against a wall. Tuck a ruler or something that extends to the floor between your legs. Using both hands, and keeping it level, pull the ruler up into your crotch as if you were sitting on the saddle. Measure the distance from the top edge of the ruler to the ground to find your inseam measurement. Your inseam is very important to your final bike size so please measure carefully.
Trek Bike Serial Number Lookup
Editorial credit: overkit / Shutterstock.com
When investing in a quality bike like Trek, you must register your bike on their website, and if you are buying a used model, you can use the same resource for due diligence to make sure the bike you buy is legit – but where do you find the Trek serial number?
To find the serial number on your Trek bike, you need to turn it upside down and let it rest on the handlebars. The bike’s serial number is marked on the underside of the frame, close to the bottom bracket. You can check the serial number using this link to the Trek website.
Trek USA offers an online service where you can look up your Trek Bike serial number or register a new one so that in the event you want to sell yours, buy another one, or yours is stolen, the bike’s relevant information is a click away- so let’s discover more on how to lookup a Trek Bike serial number.
What Information Is Contained In A Trek Bike Serial Number?
In the old days, serial numbers were used mostly to reveal basic information about a product – mostly how many had been made of a model if there was only one.
As more models were made and released, manufacturers began to use serial numbers to provide information on the model type, year of manufacture, the material used, etc. With bike manufacturers like Trek, it became useful to have serial numbers that provided more details about the bike for themselves and the customers.
Trek serial numbers contain information that includes the year of manufacture, the plant manufacturing code, which determines at which facility the bike was made, the day of the year that the bike was made and what number the bike was in the production run on that day.
What The Trek Bike Serial Numbers Mean?
From the early 90s until current, Trek has used the prefix WTU on their serial numbers, with a three-digit number following that and then a single capital letter. Then five digits for the serial number and a final letter to end.
Let’s look at an example and decode what these numbers mean.
For a Trek serial number WTU295D85467D – the serial number would be broken down as follows:
- After WTU, 295 is the sequential date number from the beginning of the year-so 295 means this frame was made on the 295 th day of the year.
- The 85467 would be the bike’s serial number.
- The letter D at the end stands for the year 2009, while the letter D after the first three numbers would be the plant where the bike was made.
Based on this configuration and data recovered from a Trek recall notice, we can deduce that the Trek serial numbers use a letter at the end to denote the year of manufacture. With the serial number above, the letter D is the year 2009, and the list below would then represent the years prior and post.
So the very first piece of information on your Trek bike you can identify is the year of it’s manufacture, and you can use this table to determine what year your Trek bike was made.
From the information available, the numbers that follow the WTU and the day number of manufacture, the next letter or group of letters are thought to indicate the manufacturing plant where the bike was made.
Trek themselves aren’t very forthcoming about their serial numbers, only what has been described above. They don’t specify whether the serial number code includes the frame size or material type information.
Vintage Trek Bike Serial Number Lookup
Trek has been in business for a long time, and many still have vintage Trek bikes dating back to the 1970s. To establish a database of serial numbers and to decode them, a survey of more than 200 Trek owners revealed how Trek serial numbers were utilised on bikes from around 1976 to before the late 1980s.
Here, the serial number configuration was LNLNLNN, where L= Letter and N=Number, so let’s look at the serial numbers and letters and what they would mean on a vintage Trek bike.
The first letter is the frame model, and the first number is the frame size. So if the serial number begins with A1, the A would represent the Frame model 210, and the one would define a 19.75″ frame.
The letter after that represents the month the frame was serialized, so A would mean January, B would be February, etc.
The second number represents the last digit of the year of serializing and is not a reference to the year model. The final three places of the serial number have letters from A through Z and numbers from 01-99.
The letters are thought to relate to the run’s designation, and the last two letters could relate to the frame number in that run. As an example, if the serial number on your Trek bike were D5F8J57, then that would tell you the following :
- D- Frame model 510
- 5 – 25,5″ frame size
- F – The month of serialization would be June
- 8 – 1978 is the year of serialization
- J – Designating the 10 th run
- 57 – the 57 th frame of the run
You can see the complete serial number survey with all the various models and exceptions here , so you can get some info using this reference to look up your vintage Trek bike serial number.
It seems odd that such a prolific manufacturer of arguably the world’s best bicycles offers no concrete information on the structure of its serial numbers, and while the registration and recovery service is a plus, submitting a Trek serial number on their website will give you a good idea of your bike and it’s history.
Since not every bike owner is interested in decoding their Trek serial numbers and only concerned with registering their bike in case it gets stolen or needs basic information, this could be why Trek hasn’t released detailed information on their serial numbers yet.

Trek Marlin 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 Compared: Which One to Choose?
CyclistsHub is supported by its readers. We may receive a commission if you buy products using our links.
In this article, I’ll help you navigate the Trek Marlin mountain bike family by comparing the Marlin 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. You’ll learn about the differences between each model, who they are best suited for, and more.
KEY TAKEAWAY
Trek Marlin mountain bikes are ideal for beginners and intermediate riders. They are suitable for cross-country-like terrains. They have relatively short fork travel and no rear suspension, so I recommend avoiding too demanding terrains and technical trails. For those, check out Trek Roscoe .
Marlins differ only in components. I believe the Marlin 6 provides the best value for money because it has a modern 10-speed 1X Shimano Deore drivetrain and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, and it’s priced in the middle of the entire Marlin range.
Plus, I’ll tell you which model gives you the best value for your money to help make your decision easier.
Trek Marlin 4 vs. 5 vs. 6 vs. 7 vs. 8
The following table summarizes the main differences between all Marlins that belong among the Trek hardtail mountain bikes .
Marlin Pros & Cons Summary
I summarized the pros & cons of the Marlin series below.
Marlin Pros
- Affordability
- Availability in multiple sizes and colors
- Compatible with racks, kickstands, etc.
- Partially internal cable routing
- Lifetime warranty
Marlin Cons
- Unsuitable for demanding MTB terrain due to the short fork travel (100mm)
- Relatively heavy
- No full-suspension
- No dropper post (except Trek Marlin 8 Gen 3), Gen 3 models are compatible with dropper posts
Marlin Main Features
Let me now explain the most important features of the Trek Marlin bikes.
Frame and Geometry
All Marlin bikes have the same aluminum cross-country frame , available in many sizes and colors that vary between models.
The XXS-S sizes have a differently shaped top tube , which is curved to increase the clearance between the rider’s crotch and the frame. This allows riders with shorter legs to stand over the bike more comfortably, for example, when stopping.
The frames of Gen 2 Marlins have a standard cross-country geometry , which provides a comfortable riding position and easy pedaling uphill and downhill. It also gives you easy maneuverability and visibility.
On the other hand, it’s not quite suitable for steep descents and challenging terrain – especially without a dropper seatpost.
The Gen 3 Marlins have a trail geometry (wider wheelbase) that provides more stability, especially when riding downhill. This geometry is similar to the Trek Roscoe .
Lastly, it’s worth noting that the bike’s partially internally routed cables improve its overall appearance.
One of the biggest limitations of Marlin bikes is their front fork suspension. These bikes are not primarily designed for challenging terrain but rather for those who want a versatile bike that can handle various surfaces.
All Marlin bikes have a suspension travel of only 100mm, which is capable of absorbing small bumps. However, this is not ideal for riding on rocky trails, especially not for downhill riding.
Therefore, if you want a bike for more challenging terrain, choose one with longer travel (for example, the Trek Roscoe series ).
All Marlin bikes’ forks have suspension lockout. Lock them when riding on smooth surfaces to reduce energy loss when pedaling.
Wheels and Tires
The wheel size varies depending on the frame size. Frames smaller than size S are equipped with 27.5″ wheels, which are more agile and accelerate faster than 29″ wheels. Frames size M and larger have 29-inch wheels, which are more stable and better at maintaining speed.
All models have the same rims (Bontrager Connection, double-wall) except for the highest model, the Marlin 8 , which has Bontrager Kove rims. The former rims are not tubeless-ready, while the latter are.
The same goes for the tires. The highest model already has tubeless Maxxis Ardent tires, while lower models have Bontrager XR2 Comp inner tube tires.
The groupset is one of the main areas where the different models vary, and it’s probably the deciding factor for many people.
They differ primarily in the number of gears . Modern mountain bikes mainly use 1X drivetrains , which are popular due to their simplicity for maintenance and shifting. They are also lighter than 2X or 3X groupsets .
On the other hand, they offer fewer gears, so you may not always find the ideal one for your preferred cadence.
I recommend choosing from the 1X drivetrains available on Marlin 6 and higher models. This way, you won’t have to think too much about shifting and cross-chaining.
Another difference between the Marlin models is their brakes. The entry-level Marlin 4 uses mechanical disc brakes , while higher-end models have Tektro or Shimano hydraulic brakes .
Better brakes provide higher braking power. However, if you mainly ride on flat terrain leisurely, you don’t have to worry about a lack of braking performance.
Quality brakes are especially important if you plan on riding technical descents, so consider your riding style.
To learn more about disc brakes, read my article comparing mechanical and disc brakes .
Marlin frames have mounts for kickstands and racks , so you can easily install these accessories.
You can also use a Blendr stem , which is a mechanism that allows you to easily attach things like lights, speedometers, or bike computers.
The last detail is the lock-on grips that are easier to install and replace than slip-on grips.
So, which bike from the Marlin family is the best?
In my opinion, the Marlin 6 is the best choice because it has a modern 10-speed 1X Shimano Deore drivetrain and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes. Plus, it’s priced in the middle of the entire Marlin range.
Another option to consider is the Marlin 5 , which is similar but has a Shimano Altus 2×8spd drivetrain, is lighter, and more affordable.
On the other hand, I recommend avoiding the Marlin 4 because it uses the outdated 3X drivetrain. The value of the Marlin 8 is also questionable, as you can get mountain bikes with better components in this price range.
Trek Marlin FAQ
Trek Marlin mountain bikes are perfect for people new to mountain biking, recreational riders, and those who use their bikes to commute. Marlins are reasonably priced, versatile, and comfortable. They come in various sizes and colors, so you can always find the best fit. However, they have entry-level components that are unsuitable for challenging terrain because their fork travel is short. Check out Trek X-Caliber and Procaliber families if you want a better XC bike.
Marlin bikes (4 to 8) differ mainly in components like the groupset, front fork, brakes, weight, and price. I recommend reading this entire article for more information and a helpful comparison table.
The geometry is the main difference between Trek Marlin Gen 2 and Gen 3. Gen 3 Marlins have a trail geometry, meaning a wider wheelbase provides better stability. Gen 2 has a standard XC geometry. Marlin Gen 3 bikes are heavier, have wider tires and different wheels, and are available in different colors. They are also more expensive (except for the Marlin 7 Gen 2 vs. Gen 3). Most other components, like the groupset, suspension fork, saddle, grips, etc., are the same.
Marlin mountain bikes are a great choice for those who need an affordable bike. They are versatile, allowing you to ride on surfaces like paved roads with potholes, dirt, forest roads, and easy trails. Plus, they have mounting options that make adding accessories like racks and kickstands easy. The high-volume tires and front suspension provide a comfortable ride, better than what you’d get on a gravel bike , for example.
Marlin mountain bikes come with entry-level components that may limit their performance for serious mountain bikers. The groupsets are not as fast and effective, and the fork travel is limited to only 100mm. These bikes are also relatively heavy and don’t have a carbon frame option or a dropper post.

The Gen 3 Marlin 8 has a dropper post and many other gen 3 models have the holes to run a dropper.

History of Samara Oblast
The territory of the present Samara region became part of the Russian state in the middle of the 16th century, after the Kazan and Astrakhan khanates were conquered by the Russian state. In the 17th-18th centuries, the territory around the middle Volga was colonized by migrants from other regions of Russia and foreigners (in particular, the Volga Germans).
The intensified colonization of the region began only in the second half of the 18th century. From the mid 19th century, this region experienced economic growth. Samara became an important center of the Russian domestic grain market, which led to the development of trade and industry in the city. In 1851, Samara became the center of Samara guberniya (province).
In 1935, Samara was renamed into Kuybyshev (the historical name was returned in 1990). In Soviet times, industrialization had a serious impact on the development of the region. Construction of plants producing explosives, poisonous substances and ammunition began in the town of Chapayevsk.
During the Second World War, the region became one of the centers of the defense industry of the USSR. In 1941, an oil processing plant was put into operation in Syzran providing the army with fuel. Several aviation plants were evacuated to Kuybyshev from Moscow and Voronezh. They started production of “Il-2” attack aircraft.
More Historical Facts…
In 1942, a railway passed through Syzran to supply Soviet troops during the Stalingrad Battle. In 1941-1943, diplomatic missions of foreign countries to the USSR were located in Kuybyshev (Samara). In 1941, there were plans for transferring the capital of the country to Kuybyshev in case the German troops capture Moscow.
In the 1950s-1960s, this region was one of the leading centers of oil extracting in the USSR. In 1945-1951, Kuybyshev and Novokuybyshev oil processing plants were built. At the same time, construction of Zhiguli hydroelectric power station was resumed. It was put into operation in 1955. Because of this construction, the town of Stavropol was flooded and was rebuilt in a new place and received a new name - Tolyatti.
Later, the construction base created during the construction of Zhiguli hydroelectric power station was used to create a series of other large industrial enterprises in Tolyatti - “KuybyshevAzot” mineral fertilizer plant, “Tolyattikauchuk” synthetic rubber plant (1964-1966), the Volga Automobile Plant (1970), and the largest in the country and the world manufacturer of ammonia “TolyattiAzot” (1979).
At the same time, aviation production was expanded. Kuibyshev Aviation Plant began production of the most mass Soviet passenger medium-haul aircraft Tu-154. The Soviet rocket space program orders were also fulfilled at this plant (“Progress” rockets).
In the post Soviet period, due to saved economic potential, Samara oblast has become one of the main economic centers of the country.
