One of the main goals of this center is sea turtle rehabilitation which you can see in action at the seven turtle hospital pools.

It was the most mesmerizing sight, and the entire museum was very family-friendly. I've Lived in Florida for 27 Years — and These Are the Best Affordable Beach Vacations in the State

A local weighs in on the best cheap beach vacations in Florida without the high price tags.

Hundreds of miles of coastline keep Florida top of mind for a beach vacation year-round. And despite the Sunshine State's perpetual popularity, you might be surprised by how much terrain there is for a cheap beach getaway filled with fun.

After 27 years in Florida, I’ve done my fair share of poking around for the finest sandy stretches the state has to offer.

When friends come to visit from across the country or around the world, I always point them to a few places they’d likely never discover on their own — all the better for having a unique Florida experience while saving some money. With that in mind, here are some of some of my favorite places for a cheap beach vacation in Florida that doesn't skimp on sun and fun.

Apalachicola

Famous for its oyster bars and seafood shacks like LongBill’s, this friendly community along Florida’s Panhandle is prime for an affordable beach vacation, especially when you stay at a historic property like The Bowery Inn or Taranto House , both of which date to the early 1900s, or the lovely Gibson Inn , another historic hotel with a breezy wraparound porch.

“This community captivates the heart and soul of Old Florida charm with a relaxed vibe, incredible fishing, one-of-a-kind boutiques, and the liveliest locals slurping down fresh oysters and plenty of libations,” says Jason Bogan, general manager of The Gibson Inn. “So, come on down, pull up a stool, and immerse yourself in some genuine Southern hospitality.”

Among the many unspoiled white-sand beaches in Apalachicola and the Forgotten Coast are stretches lining the beautiful barrier island of St. George. Laura Byrne of Tampa Bay Parenting says she first fell in love with the island’s beaches while living in Tallahassee some years ago (Florida’s state capital is about 80 miles northeast of St. George Island).

“I’m from Tampa and was used to the beautiful sugar-sand beaches of Clearwater, and St. George Island State Park did not disappoint,” says Byrne. Grab a kayak or canoe from Island Outfitters and paddle in the Gulf of Mexico or along the Apalachicola River Paddling Trail System , or rent a golf cart to explore Apalachicola’s historic district, home to many interesting buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach was always my preferred destination for an affordable beach weekend when I spent a few years after college living in nearby Orlando. Just about a one-hour drive east of Orlando puts you along these dune-backed beaches where pro surfer Kelly Slater grew up shredding waves. You can rent a board at Ron Jon Surf Shop and paddle out near the Cocoa Beach Pier , or sign up for surf lessons at the School of Surf . Budget-minded hotels in the area include Beach Place Guesthouses — one of my favorites in all of Florida for a low-key stay — strung with hammocks and fronting a quiet stretch of sand with loaner surfboards at the ready. Rise early from August to September for a beach walk here, and you might even see baby sea turtles hatching. Also be sure to check the rocket launch calendar for a free show in the sky. "The Wizard of Oz" fans will want to shell out a few bucks to pop into the quirky Wizard of Oz Museum , home to a private collection that spans decades of memorabilia. With all this and more, it's no wonder Cocoa Beach is one of the best beaches near Orlando .

New Smyrna Beach

New Smyrna Beach , another popular option not far from Orlando, is a safe and beautiful bet for an affordable beach vacation in Florida. Oceanfront condos for rent line the packed sand, plus you can consider a riverside stay at one of my favorite bed-and-breakfasts in the state — Black Dolphin Inn , which fronts the Intracoastal Waterway. A quintessential Florida feed awaits on the river at JB’s Fish Camp , a local favorite for its fabulous grouper sandwich and fish dip. You can rent kayaks and paddleboards here, too, and paddle out into the surrounding river. Florida’s largest stretch of undeveloped coastline also awaits at Canaveral National Seashore , with 24 miles of pristine sand for sunbathing, shelling, and swimming.

Panama City Beach

This former party-heavy destination has pivoted in recent years to become a favorite among families seeking an affordable and cheerful beach vacation in Florida. Panama City Beach’s unpretentious vibes pair with gorgeous Gulf of Mexico beaches, making it a top Panhandle destination. Scuba divers like me flock to the area to blow bubbles underwater at five shipwrecks that are part of the Florida Panhandle Shipwreck Trail . And you only need a mask and snorkel to fin out from the beach and explore the rock jetty and artificial reef attracting tropical fish, rays, and more at St. Andrews State Park . Book an affordable room at the beachfront Flamingo Hotel and Tower ; hit Shrimp Basket for a budget feast of oysters, wings, and shrimp; and simply bask in the mellow beach vibes.

Pensacola Beach

With accommodation options that range from camping at Fort Pickens to the beachfront Pensacola Beach RV Resort and chain hotels to the gorgeous Pensacola Beach Resort , this is another affordable Panhandle destination in Florida. You can explore the area on a budget aboard the 145-passenger Pensacola Bay City Ferry, which connects downtown Pensacola, Fort Pickens, and Pensacola Beach. But you’ll want to jump in the car to visit other gorgeous area beaches, too, like Johnson Beach at Gulf Islands National Seashore and the dune-backed white strand at Perdido Key State Park . From April through October, free bands play at Pensacola Beach, and people bring lawn chairs and settle in for the evening.The U.S. Navy Blue Angels are at home in Pensacola, so you might even be treated to a free show in the sky. Lastly, don’t miss Atlas Oyster House for a lively brunch in town plus cheap bloody marys and bottles of bubbly.

Bradenton Beach

A vacation in Bradenton Beach along Florida’s Gulf Coast puts visitors within a quick drive of some of the region’s most gorgeous beaches along Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key — all for a fraction of the price. You can still find old-school properties like Beach Dreams and BridgeWalk fronting the white sand and historic district here. You can also explore the area for free aboard the Island Trolley , which makes a loop from Bradenton’s Coquina Beach north to Anna Maria Island’s City Pier. Weekends boom with families descending for all-you-can-eat pancakes served with Gulf of Mexico views at the beloved Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe . And the lively Coquina Beach Market , next to Longboat Pass and with all kinds of crafts and handmade items for sale, always makes for a fun, free outing on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

St. Augustine Beach

St. Augustine may be one of Florida’s most touristic (and historic) cities, but you can have a surprisingly affordable beach vacation here, too.

Tour St. Augustine offers free historic walking tours of the downtown attractions every Saturday and Sunday, as well as other options. My kids love riding the free passenger ferry to Rattlesnake Island to play pirates at Fort Matanzas National Monument, which has gorgeous views overlooking the Matanzas River. There’s also a playground that kids love at Lighthouse Park , where you can picnic under the oaks and take in the lighthouse views. When it comes to beach time, there’s no better free activity than bodysurfing and searching the sand for shark teeth at St. Augustine Beach or Vilano Beach, where you'll still find affordable, mom-and-pop properties like Magic Beach Motel .

Lake Worth Beach

Just south of tony Palm Beach, Lake Worth Beach is a great option if you’re looking for an affordable vacation along this notoriously pricey stretch of South Florida. The City of Lake Worth Beach pier is a favorite spot among surfers and has a buzzing breakfast joint — Benny’s on the Beach , where the kids can fill up on French toast and pancakes, then scoot down to the sand, while the bloody marys and mimosas flow for adults. Between Lake Worth and Lantana, just south, there are plenty of mom-and-pop hotels within a short bike ride of the beaches, including Beachway Inn and Barefoot Mailman Inn & Suites . The Lake Worth Beach Waterside Farmers Market is a lively place to spend a Saturday morning from October through April, with coffee, music, and dancing in the street. Free concerts and festivals with lagoon views often play out at the bandshell at Bryant Park Pavilion, too.

Indian Rocks Beach

Beloved by locals, but often overlooked where it sits between busier St. Pete Beach to the south and Clearwater Beach to the north, Indian Rocks Beach is one of my go-tos for an affordable beach vacation in the Tampa Bay area, where I live.

Sign the family up for surf lessons with Sister Jo’s Surf School (the waves are almost always ideal for beginners) and stroll the boardwalk through a marshy forest at the small but beautiful Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve. “I love that you can enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling here, and the white sand is perfect for building castles and finding unique shells,” says Karimah Henry of Crafting a Fun Life .

When I visit with my own family, I love staying just south of Indian Rocks Beach, in Indian Shores, at the affordable Legacy Vacation Resorts . I Spent 8 Days with 4 Kids in Daytona Beach, Florida and This Is What It Cost

Welcome to  Vacation Funds , where we try to figure out how much vacations actually cost by asking people about their travel budgets, and then see how they actually stack up when they return from their getaways.

This month’s edition highlights Meg St-Esprit 's eight-day family trip to Florida's Atlantic Coast, where the hotel pool was as big a draw as the Kennedy Space Center. Read on to see how they did with a $6,000 budget. My husband and I have been traveling with our four kids since before they could walk, and it’s clear they’ve caught our case of wanderlust. We love all trips big and small, from local camping weekends to big swings like Walt Disney World —but the ocean is the one spot that calls to us time and time again.

I grew up swimming along Florida’s Atlantic coast with my grandparents and still have family there, so when my husband and I began planning a spring break beach trip for 2024, we honed in on an area we know and love: Daytona Beach . When we are traveling on a budget, we often have better luck with locations that are familiar . We know which restaurants work for our kids, what activities aren’t worth the cost, and have an easier time planning an itinerary for our big family .

On this trip, we also decided to take along our favorite vacation necessity: the grandparents. My parents joined us for the week to spend time together and help with the kids. Our goal was to keep our portion of the trip under $6,000. While that is no small amount of money, it's still pretty tricky to do with a family of six. We gave it our best shot.

Planned budget: $6,000

Upfront costs

Since Spirit charges per bag, we packed one large duffel bag for each of the kids and they each carried a backpack onto the plane. This didn't leave a ton of space for clothing, so we planned to do laundry in the middle of the week. My husband and I both checked a roller carry-on at $50 each. We also chose to fly into Orlando and drive to Daytona, as flights to Daytona were considerably more expensive.

Hotels/Lodging: $2,064. Accommodations were our biggest expense for this trip, coming to a total of $4,128 that my parents insisted on splitting evenly down the middle. The eight of us realistically need at least three standard hotel rooms to stay comfortably, and a full kitchen actually saves us money on trips. We decided to book a four-bedroom, four-bathroom condo at Club Wyndham Ocean Walk through Airbnb . At $510 a night, most wouldn’t consider it budget-friendly. However, we priced several different options for eight people and found it to be the most economical along the coast. This hotel also has a lazy river, kid activities all day long, indoor mini golf, and both indoor and outdoor pools. Staying at a resort like this means we don’t spend as much on outside entertainment while traveling.

Rental car: $487 . Along with my parents, we rented two small SUVs from Hertz at the Orlando Airport for $487 each. Having two cars meant we could split up the group when necessary.

Pet sitting: $500. We have two dogs, a cat, and a bearded dragon. Pet sitting is often an overlooked expense for travelers, but it does add up. We paid a local pet sitter $500 to stay at our house for the week, and he took excellent care of our beloved critters.

Day 1 - Saturday

Our first day was filled with travel. We started with a 5:15 am flight full of excited kids in Mickey ears and touched down in Orlando by breakfast. After gathering our bags and picking up our rental cars, we headed to Orlando’s infamous Denny’s—local lore says it's the busiest Denny’s in America, but the tenured wait staff runs the bustling dining room like a well-oiled machine.

Our total for breakfast was $110, which is fairly average for dining out with our four kids. Upon arriving at the hotel, the kids changed into their bathing suits to hit the lazy river while my husband and I stocked the condo with a pre-scheduled Walmart pickup order totalling $338—the same cost as our weekly grocery order at home. We ate lunch and dinner in the room. The kids were too excited for another sit-down meal, so we grazed before an early bedtime.

Day 2 - Sunday

We spent our first full day at the hotel. The kids made friends, swam all day, and ate breakfast and lunch from the Walmart supplies. We ordered some pizza for an early dinner around 4 pm, which totalled $75 and left us with a whole pizza for lunch the next day. After dinner, the kids and two adults wanted ice cream, which cost $35.

Day 3 - Monday

On Monday, we made another grocery run to pick up some more beach-friendly snacks and drinks, as well as some sand toys, from a nearby Publix ($215). Our three younger kids went to Publix with my mom and me while my oldest toured the historic Ponce Inlet lighthouse with my husband and my dad at a cost of $7 each. After the shopping trip, my other kids were happy to spend the afternoon swimming with the gaggle of friends they met the first evening. We reconvened for dinner at Big Tuna’s at a cost of $110. My kids were able to pack up their leftovers, which they excitedly ate the next day.

Day 4 - Tuesday

We ate breakfast and lunch in the room again, with a morning swim in the indoor pool. This day was a bit chilly, so we skipped the pool in favor of doing a few excursions. My oldest toured the Daytona International Speedway with my husband and my dad ($73), while our other kids decided to check out Daytona’s new aquarium instead ($106). A snack break at Wawa cost $20. Upon reconvening at the condo that evening, only a few of our kids wanted to go out to dinner. My mom, husband, and I took two kids to a cute diner across from our hotel, while the other kids chose leftovers and a few quiet hours to recharge. The diner total was $100 and resulted in more leftover food for kid meals.

Day 5 - Wednesday

Midway through our week, the kids needed a chill morning to relax due to too much sun and a lot of late-night swimming. We let them be lazy, spent a bit of time on the sand, and ordered food from a beach food truck ($52).

Later, my aunt and uncle, who live near Daytona, came to visit. Together, we made the 45-minute drive to New Smyrna Beach . My grandparents used to live there, and it’s full of memories for us. Since my five-year-old talks incessantly about sea turtles, we made a pilgrimage to the Marine Science Center . The cost of admission was $36 overall (and only $5 per kid), but well worth it. We saw—and even touched—turtles up close!

For dinner, we went to a local favorite, JB’s Fish Camp , just down the street from my grandparents’ former house. We ate seafood along the Indian River and watched dolphins swim at sunset, just like I did as a kid. My parents generously covered this dinner bill in a fit of nostalgia, and for that, we were thankful. JB’s food is incredible but a bit above the price point we usually aim for when eating out with our kids.

At the end of the night, I emerged with a memento: a JB’s tank top to replace the one I bought as a teen and wore until it fell apart ($22, but priceless).

Day 6 - Thursday

When we saw that our last full day (Friday) would be rainy and a bit cold, we decided to make Thursday a beach day. Our 10-year-old twins and 12-year-old are mature enough to bop around the hotel themselves with frequent check-ins, so they split time between our beach umbrella, the outdoor pool, and the hotel arcade. We split some meals from the beach food truck for lunch ($42) and mixed in snacks from the condo. At dinnertime, we returned to the greasy spoon across from our hotel, the Starlite Diner , for another great meal. This time everyone joined in and even enjoyed a round of milkshakes, so the bill was $150.

Day 7 - Friday

With clouds and temps in the mid-60s, my oldest and my dad decided to take a drive down to Kennedy Space Center. Since admission is $80 a person, we were more than fine with the fact that the other kids decided to sit this one out. The Kennedy Space Center trip took most of the day and included a stop at the Cape Canaveral National Seashore, where they saw over 100 manatees. They ate McDonald’s for lunch on the drive ($22).

The other kids swam in the indoor pool, requested a stop at Buc-ee's for lunch ($44), and played round after round of Uno. We met my dad and son at LandShark Bar and Grill for our last dinner at a cost of $207. We did have a coupon for buy-one-get-one margaritas, though!

Day 8 - Saturday

We woke up and ate a hodgepodge of food from the condo before cleaning out and packing up. We donated the sand toys we bought to a collective bin at the hotel, rather than pay to check another bag.

While our flight out of Orlando wasn’t until 6 pm, we decided to squeeze in a fan boat ride in Kissimmee at a cost of $190. It was a splurge we hadn’t accounted for, but all the kids agreed it was one of their favorite parts of the trip. After the ride, we headed to the airport. We ate lunch at Wawa for $45 and snacked on a variety of mediocre food court meals at the airport ($65). If you’re sensing a theme with my kids and gas station food , you’re correct; Pittsburgh has Sheetz, but no Buc-ee’s or Wawa, so they insist on stopping any time we see one.

The kids were famished upon landing after a short flight delay, so we did spend another $50 on McDonald’s at 10 pm. Since that location was just a few blocks from our house, we aren’t counting that as a vacation expense. They ate, fell right asleep, and didn’t wake up until 10 am the next day—the perfect ending to a great trip.

World’s largest Buc-ee’s opening soon. But it won’t match what’s coming to Florida

LULING, Tex. – Everything’s bigger -- in Florida.

Buc-ee’s is set to open its largest location to date next week — though it won’t be a match for what Florida’s getting.

In a news release , the company announced that its newest store is opening Monday, June 10, in Luling, Texas.

That location will boast over 75,000 square feet, making it the largest nationwide. To date, a Buc-ee’s store in Sevierville, Tennessee has held that title, measuring only 74,000 square feet.

According to the release, the new Texas location can be found on I-10, and it will feature 120 fueling stations outside of the store.

In addition, company officials said that the store will replace the city’s current Buc-ee’s store, which was built in 2003 as the first family travel center.

“We are thrilled to open the doors to the world’s largest Buc-ee’s travel center right here in the Great State of Texas,” Buc-ee’s Director of Real Estate and Development Stan Beard said. “It’s particularly exciting considering this is the Buc-ee’s that started it all, so we are really looking forward to celebrating with the incredible people of Luling.”

But while that might be a hefty figure, an even larger store is set to come to Central Florida next year.

While no specific date has been announced, Buc-ee’s is scheduled to open a store near Interstate 75 north of Ocala in 2025. That travel center is set to be around 80,000 square feet .

So far, there have been two other Buc-ee’s travel centers built in the Sunshine State: one in Daytona Beach and another in St. Augustine .

Site plans were also submitted earlier this year for a potential fourth location in Florida in St. Lucie County along the Treasure Coast.

The plans show a 73,000-square-foot store with nearly 800 parking spots, 120 fueling stations, and several other parking spots for buses and electric vehicles.

Buc-ee’s, the brainchild of Arch Aplin III , first opened in Texas in 1982, expanding throughout the state before expanding across the South, including in Florida in recent years.

The store offers numerous gas pumps, clean bathrooms, Beaver Nuggets (caramel popcorn), Texas-style brisket sandwiches, fresh jerky, T-shirts, hats, blankets, mugs and more.
