A wide variety of tours are available to older travelers — from relaxing river cruises through the heart of Europe to coach tours around Australia and more active pursuits like going on an African safari .

Senior Vacation Packages are Tailored for Older Travelers

With more time and resources, senior travelers can fully indulge their passions and curiosities by enjoying memorable travel experiences. Responding to the growing demand from older adventurers , tour operators, including small ship and river cruise lines, are tailoring their offerings to cater to senior needs and interests.

Today, tour companies are evolving rapidly to provide sophisticated and enriching experiences, offering amenities such as accessible accommodations, leisurely-paced itineraries, knowledgeable guides, and on-board medical assistance.

They ensure that senior citizen group tours are no longer synonymous with crowded buses but rather personalized journeys for discerning seniors.

Senior Citizen Tours Offer Authentic Experiences

Tours for senior citizens offer authentic experiences that create lasting memories, sparing travelers the hassle of planning every detail themselves. With a focus on providing expert guidance, these travel providers offer a diverse range of adventures.

Whether it’s an adventure like an African safari or a visit to Machu Picchu or a small ship expedition to the Galapagos , trips catering to seniors usually feature less physically demanding itineraries and accessible accommodations, with a greater emphasis on authentic cultural and culinary experiences.

Europe , mainly the UK and Central Europe, is a popular destination for seniors, offering a mix of ancient history, food, views, and architecture. River cruises provide a luxurious yet active way to explore Europe's iconic cities. At the same time, walking tours in places like Vienna appeal to those interested in classical music.

In North America , US and Canadian national parks and Mexican and Central American archaeological and natural treasures beckon. In the northeastern US, seniors can enjoy the spectacular fall colors and explore museums dedicated to the revolutionary history of the region.

Birding tours are also gaining popularity among seniors, offering opportunities to spot elusive species in destinations like British Columbia, Costa Rica, the Amazon, and Britain, guided by professional photographers and fellow enthusiasts.

How Seniors Can Choose the Best All-Inclusive Vacation For Their Needs

If you’ve never researched an all-inclusive vacation, use these tips to choose the best one for you and your needs and wants.

1. Determine your budget and how long you can be away from home. All-inclusive vacations can range from a few days to a few weeks.

2. Research different all-inclusive vacation options to determine which vacation best meets your needs. Consider the type of activities you enjoy, the accommodations you prefer, and the foods that interest you.

3. Consider the location and how easy it is to travel there . Look into the transportation options available and the cost of getting there. Many all-inclusive packages don’t include air fare or travel costs to the destination.

4. Speak to a travel agent or company for advice and suggestions. They can provide helpful tips and guidance on the best all-inclusive vacation package for your needs.

5. Ask around and read reviews from previous travelers who have visited the location. This will help you better understand the experience you can expect.

6. Double-check the details and read the fine print of the vacation package contract to ensure it meets your requirements. Make sure you understand what is included and what is not. Check the cancellation and refund policies of the package in case of changes in travel plans.

7. Consider the safety and security measures of the all-inclusive vacation, especially if you are a senior or elderly person traveling alone or with a senior travel tour group.

8. Check the medical services available at the all-inclusive location in case of medical emergencies.

9. Research the available activities to ensure they have suitable options for senior tours and tourist attractions for older adults. If you have mobility issues, ask what options you have.

10. Look into any discounts or special offers available for seniors.

How Seniors Can Stay Safe While Vacationing

Seniors and the elderly must remain safe and secure when on vacation. Here are some suggestions on how to do that.

1. Research the destination ahead of time to ensure the environment is safe and meets your needs . Check local laws, customs, State Department Travel Advisories , and safety regulations before you travel.

2. Use sunscreen and insect repellent to avoid sunburn and bug bites. Bring a first aid kit and basic and essential medications with you.

3. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes to avoid falls and other injuries and layered clothing to keep you warm as cool as you want to be.

4. Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially in hot weather.

5. Always carry your medications and needed medical supplies with you.

6. Stay in contact with family and friends while on vacation to keep your loved ones updated on your whereabouts. If you are traveling alone, inform the hotel staff and ensure someone knows where you are.

7. Choose your activities wisely. Avoid any high-risk activities , such as scuba diving or extreme sports, unless your doctor ok’d it.

8. Ask questions and make sure you understand the safety protocols of the resort before engaging in any activities.

9. Make sure your travel insurance covers any medical emergencies and gives you access to medical care in an emergency.

10. If you have special dietary or medical needs , make sure that your destination can accommodate them.

11. Carry minimal amounts of cash and keep your valuable items, like passports and credit cards, safe.

12. Be aware of your surroundings and stay in well-lit, populated areas at night.

How Seniors Can Make the Most of Their Vacation

Once you have chosen your vacation, you want the best experience for your money, right? Here’s how.

1. Research the destination, resort, and package carefully to find one that meets your needs.

2. Book your vacation location and package in advance to ensure you get the best deal and avoid any last-minute surprises.

3. Pack light and only bring what you need. Traveling light makes it easier to navigate airports and reduces your chances of losing valuable items.

4. Ask the resort staff for recommendations on activities and excursions best suited to seniors .

5. Take advantage of the resort’s amenities and services, such as spa treatments, fitness classes, and water sports , when it is safe to do so.

6. Pack plenty of sunscreen and insect repellent to avoid sunburns and bug bites.

7. Take advantage of the included meals to save money, including snack times and cocktail hours .

8. Set aside some time to relax and take it easy. It is a vacation after all!

9. Ask the concierge for information on local events or attractions that might interest you.

10. Have a plan to stay safe and healthy while on vacation .

Trips for All Tastes

As you can see, there are many different options when it comes to senior all-inclusive vacations.

Whether you’re the active sort or prefer things to be more on the lazy side, there are attractions to suit you. We haven’t even touched on traditional cruises!

I think Rendezvous is the best choice because it combines luxury and exclusivity. You know before you book precisely what sort of clientele will be there.

This means you can look forward to a good holiday without stress. It’s a great setting, and the service is top-notch.

If you’re not in the mood for beaches, there are plenty of other getaways in cabins, caravans, and city resorts. Choose a more adventurous vacation if you feel so inclined!

That’s the beauty of all-inclusive vacations. You can tailor them to meet your need. Yelloh Village has something for everyone, and with the right all-inclusive tour operator, you can get a great vacation that covers all of your needs.

Not all package vacations are aimed at seniors, though. But most all-inclusive holidays will suit seniors as well as younger people.

So, if you’re planning a couples getaway now that the kids have flown the nest, or you’re looking for a chance to explore, take a look at resorts for a stress-free break.

Great idea – I’ll see what I can get worked up

I would love information on senior adult all inclusive trips for 2021

My BFF and I are looking for a one week all-inclusive vacation in June in the US. We do not want to leave the US because of the COVID crap. Can you suggest something? We would love to go to the beach in Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, or Florida.

I would love to see Washington DC it’s on my bucket list

Washington DC sounds wonderful

Would love to find a all inclusive trip in eastern Canada as we are from the western side. We’d like to see our own country and have a trip that is no stress with some activities or sites to see. With out breaking the bank.

I am a single 72 year old I am very interested in a trip for one . Would like the Mexico side but do not want to travel alone. I have been a snow bird for 7 years and I am now alone but would like to travel. Any help would be great.

Scott, I just read this post and I must say, it’s very informative. I particularly liked the section where you highlighted the various options available for senior citizens and how all-inclusive packages cater to their specific needs. I also appreciated the tips on how to choose the right destination and look out for hidden costs and fees.

I would like to add that it is also important for seniors to consider their medical needs when planning a vacation. They should research the area and have emergency plans in place, and also inform the resort or tour operator of any medical conditions or requirements they may have.

Overall, I think your post provides valuable information for senior citizens looking to plan a hassle-free and enjoyable vacation. Keep up the great work!

Another senior looking for solo vacations. Not fair that when you travel alone usually have to pay so much more for single occupancy.

Definitely all inclusive Tour package is more hassle free for the senior citizen.. so what would be better Sea or Mountain. I really prefer mountain ..

I think you answered your own question! 🙂

After retirement, it's time to treat yourself to a well-deserved vacation. Without time constraints, you can enjoy longer stays or slower travel as you visit multiple regions, a variety of landscapes, or national parks you've been meaning to visit. You might also appreciate the convenience of a destination resort where you can enjoy dining and most activities on site.

There are plenty of resorts designed with mature adults in mind, but if you're planning to meet up with family, choose one with facilities geared toward multigenerational groups. For many retirees, a good vacation provides a balance of outdoor pursuits, health and wellness, and pampering, so we've selected places based on these criteria. Here are nine of the best vacations for seniors in the U.S., whether you prefer a verdant mountain retreat, a nostalgic coastal escape, or a glamorous desert oasis.

Suncadia Resort, Cle Elum, Washington

Suncadia Resort

Nestled among the Cascade Mountains on the edge of Washington's Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest , this picturesque resort offers tranquil scenery, crisp mountain air, and a variety of outdoor activities. Choose The Lodge for panoramic river and mountain views or The Inn, a plush hotel with golf course views.

At Suncadia Resort , guests can choose from a plethora of activities. Play golf, go for a hike, or try archery or axe throwing. Bikes, canoes, and kayaks are available to rent as well. If you'd prefer something less strenuous, find your inner artist with an acrylic pouring class. Begin the day with guided meditation or a fitness class followed by a spa treatment. Should the grandkids arrive for a visit, there's a pool with two slides to keep them entertained. Even the family dog can tag along to this pet-friendly property.

Big Cedar Lodge, Ridgedale, Missouri

Big Cedar Lodge

This wilderness resort in Missouri's Ozark Mountains is set in 4,600 acres of natural beauty. Big Cedar Lodge consists of three styles of accommodation: rooms within the private log cabins, luxurious cottages, or glamping and cabins at Camp Long Creek.

Five golf courses and practice facilities include 19-hole Payne's Valley, nine-hole Top of the Rock, 13-hole Mountain Top, and two 18-hole courses, Buffalo Ridge and Ozarks National. Go bowling, visit the arcade, or try a high-ropes course at Fun Mountain. Fitness classes, exercise equipment, four pools, and a personal trainer are available. With a lazy river and discovery center on-site, the grandkids will love visiting too.

Lone Mountain Ranch, Big Sky, Montana

Lone Mountain Ranch

Located near Yellowstone National Park and about an hour from Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, Lone Mountain Ranch is set in the Montana Rockies. Stay in one of 25 historic log cabins, ranging from one to six bedrooms. The named cottages have stunning forest views and are outfitted with wood stoves, rustic furnishings, and full baths.

In true ranch style, there's horseback riding, with backcountry trails and experienced wranglers to ensure a memorable experience for riders of all ages. Hike with naturalist guides, go mountain biking, or enjoy fly fishing, no matter your skill level. Canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards are provided if you want to explore nearby lakes. You can have an experienced guide curate an excursion to Yellowstone National Park or save on admission with a national park pass for seniors . Outdoor yoga, archery, and axe throwing are also options.

Mission Point, Mackinac Island, Michigan

The small island can be covered on foot or in an electric wheelchair within a few hours. Relax on the resort's expansive lawn in an Adirondack chair, go on a bike ride, play tennis, or just soak in a hot tub. Guests can also book experiences like craft and culinary workshops or spa treatments at the Lakeside Spa and Salon. When you're ready to explore, stroll downtown to sample the famous local fudge, or book a horse-drawn carriage tour to be transported to another era.

Montage Palmetto Bluff, Bluffton, South Carolina

Montage Palmetto Bluff

Montage Palmetto Bluff is a two-village, 20,000-acre community by the May River that encompasses a marina, a nature preserve, and much more. Accommodation options include rooms, suites, cottages, and residences with views of moss-draped oaks and picturesque marshlands. Some guests might even choose to buy a home here.

Explore the surrounding waterways by kayak or canoe, or take a boat tour and spot dolphins cruising along with you. Visit the 120-acre shooting range for practice both indoors and outdoors. Tennis, bocce, and pickleball courts are open for play, and you can book lessons to improve your skills. Take a leisurely stroll or bike ride along tree-lined paths. Planning a trip with family? There's special programming for young guests with games, crafts, movies, scavenger hunts, and nature walks.

Cavallo Point, Sausalito, California

Cavallo Point

A converted military post, Cavallo Point is across the Golden Gate from San Francisco in Marin County. The resort is set in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area , and offers stunning scenery, world-class dining, and a variety of activities. Guests can choose from rooms and suites in the early-20th-century officers' quarters or contemporary buildings overlooking the former fort — some with breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge. You can even rent an entire historic home with a private glassed-in porch.

During the day, take a guided hike, yoga class, or sunset cruise, and spend the evening around an outdoor fire pit. Splurge on a seaplane or helicopter tour to view the bay and San Francisco skyline from the sky. The resort's Healing Arts Center & Spa provides a variety of wellness treatments, while offerings at the on-site cooking school range from globe-spanning culinary classes to oyster and wine pairings.

Arizona Biltmore, Phoenix, Arizona

Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

If classic luxury is the vacation style you're after, the Arizona Biltmore should be high on your list. Opened in 1929, the 39-acre estate at the base of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve evokes old Hollywood glamour with 705 rooms (including 100 suites, 41 cottages, 56 villas) and Frank Lloyd Wright-influenced design.

The resort features restaurants, a day spa, and seven pools including one with a 65-foot waterslide. Play golf, tennis, or pickleball, or take advantage of concierge arrangements for hot-air balloon rides, stargazing, biking, hiking, and more. At Tierra Luna Spa, select from a range of curated therapies or join a yoga or aqua aerobics class. Be sure to order a Tequila Sunrise at the Wright Bar, where the cocktail was invented.

Bungalows Key Largo, Key Largo, Florida

Bungalows Key Largo

While Florida is one of the best states to retire in , that doesn't mean you can't take a vacation close to home. The Bungalows Key Largo is an all-inclusive, adults-only resort where you can take part in a variety of activities or just relax in a poolside cabana. Stay in a waterfront room or one set among the lush gardens with a soaking tub and outdoor shower. Regardless of which view you choose, enjoy this tropical oasis.

Kayak, paddleboard, and swim in the protected bay, where you might see manatees and dolphins glide by. Don your snorkel gear to float among colorful native fish. Join a beachfront yoga class or work out at the full-service Fitness Tiki Hut. If you simply want to unwind, head to the Zen Garden Spa's steam room, sauna, or outdoor treatment cabana for a soothing massage. For the perfect end to an active or relaxing day, watch the sun go down on a catamaran cruise with a frozen cocktail in hand.

Rancho Bernardo Inn, San Diego, California

Rancho Bernardo Inn

At Rancho Bernardo Inn , guest rooms, suites, and specially designed accessible rooms are set among lush gardens for a secluded feel. Private patios and balconies offer garden, spa, or golf course views. The resort's 265 acres and San Diego's perfect weather provide opportunities for alfresco dining and outdoor activities.

Play golf at the pristine 18-hole course, relax by the pool, or have fun with lawn games like cornhole, croquet, or oversized chess. Tour the Chef's Garden to see the source of the restaurants' fresh ingredients or get some ideas for your home garden. Spend some time at the spa, take a sunset yoga class, or arrange a private session. You can interact with a trained bird of prey with a private falconry encounter. If young ones visit, they'll love the “dive-in movies” at the family pool, the well-equipped game room, and San Diego's nearby attractions.

Off Season Travel Deals

Off season travel discounts are among the best senior discounts.

Taking advantage of your time flexibility can give older travelers great savings on rental accommodations.

Many tourist locations have off-season rates. You will have a better chance of avoiding the crowds of the main season and often get better service at hotels and restaurants.

Your trip will include a less crowded visit to a beach, a museum, a golf course and basically your entire itinerary.

If you visit Costa Rica, you will benefit from low season rates during May or November. We found that the sunny skies will be complemented by 10% to 40% lower rates.

Here is an example of a beautiful sunny 82° day on North Beach in Ogunquit, Maine in September. When the "Summer Crowds" have gone!

Travel Discounts for Seniors

W hether you’re visiting family or taking a vacation, there are many travel deals available for senior citizens . Some travel discounts for seniors can be found online, while others are available when you call or join an organization. Be ready to read the fine print and ask for details to make sure you are eligible for discounts. You will often be required to show proof of age, such as an ID or membership card.

Some of the senior travel discounts to consider include:

  • Hotel senior discounts.
  • Flight senior discounts.
  • Train senior discounts.
  • Car rental senior discounts.
  • Cruise senior discounts.
  • Admission senior discounts.
  • AAA senior discounts versus AARP senior discounts.

Many chains and local hotels will grant older guests a discount. Ask when making a reservation or look as you book online. Here are a few hotel senior discounts to help you get started:

  • Aqua-Aston Hospitality: Travelers age 50 or older can save up to 15% off the best available rate.
  • Best Western: Guests who are 55 and older could get discounted room rates and free breakfast at participating locations.

  • Wyndham Hotels & Resorts: Grants guests who are at least 60 years old a senior rate at participating locations.

Flight Senior Discounts

In addition to airline miles you might accumulate through a credit card , look for senior deals when booking a flight. Some airlines change their policies occasionally, so it’s best to ask if you don’t see a discount offered online. Here are a few airline senior discounts to consider:

  • Air France: Offers a senior pass to customers who are at least 65 years old. The pass costs 49 euros a year and includes benefits such as flexible tickets and discounts on flights.
  • British Airways: AARP members can receive between $65 and $200 off round-trip flights.
  • Delta: Provides a senior discount in certain markets. Call to ask about availability.

  • ParkRideFly: Gives AARP members a 12% savings when booking airport parking.
  • United Airlines: Offers a discounted price to passengers who are 65 and older for selected destinations.

Train Senior Discounts

If you want to see the U.S. or Europe by rail, there are special offers available to seniors. Look for online details or call ahead and ask. You could save between 10% and 30% on your next trip. Try these train senior discounts:

  • Amtrak: 10% off most rail fares for travelers age 65 and older.
  • Eurail Passes: 10% off for Europe train travel if you are 60 and older and purchase a Senior Pass.
  • Grand Canyon Railway: Offers a 15% discount on train tickets to those who are 62 and older.
  • Senior Rail Card: One-third off of UK rail travel for ticket purchasers who are 60 or older.
  • Vacations by Rail: Gives a 5% discount and other benefits to AARP members.

Car Rental Senior Discounts

Many car rental locations will grant seniors a discount. When you rent a car, ask about deals based on age. Here are a few car rental senior discounts to try:

  • Avis: AARP Members can save up to 30% off Avis base rates.
  • Auto Europe: Gives a 5% senior discount to those who book online.
  • Budget: Up to 30% off at participating locations, plus other benefits and offers for AARP members.

  • Hertz: Savings of up to 20% off base rates for travelers 50 and over at participating locations.
  • ZipCar: Offers $20 off annual membership and a $40 driving credit to AARP members.

Cruise Senior Discounts

Some cruise lines will offer deals when you call and ask. Other discounts might be available on the website as you book a trip. Check out these cruise senior discounts:

  • Carnival: Offers cruises for seniors age 55 and older at lowered rates, although exact prices depend on sailing dates and destinations.
  • Collette Cruise Tours: AARP members can save up to $100 per person on select trips.
  • Grand European Travel: AARP members can save up to $100 per person on certain guided tours.
  • Royal Caribbean: Special prices are available on select cruises for guests aged 55 and older.

Admission Senior Discounts

When booking tickets for a concert, searching for a movie or getting ready to tour a museum or park, find out about senior deals. Many locations will grant a discount if you meet their age requirements and can show proof of age. You might find senior discounts for admissions at the following places:

  • AMC Theatres provides a discount to ticket purchasers who are 60 and older at participating locations.
  • America the Beautiful Senior Pass: $20 for an annual senior pass or $80 for a lifetime pass, which can be used at national parks and federal recreational lands.
  • Art Institute of Chicago: Seniors age 65 and older receive a $8 discount.
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City: $8 off ticket prices for seniors.
  • Regal Theatres provides discounts to moviegoers who are 60 or older for certain performances.
  • The National Baseball Hall of Fame: $6 discount on admission for seniors who are 65 and older.
  • Ticketmaster: AARP members receive discounts on selected events.

AAA Senior Discounts Versus AARP Discounts

The American Automobile Association, commonly called AAA, charges an annual membership fee. In exchange, members receive roadside assistance and additional benefits. The classic membership costs $64.99 a year and provides standard towing, identity theft monitoring, emergency fuel delivery and discounts at over 100,000 locations, including hotels and restaurants. Members can expect to receive a discount for certain electronic products such as HP and Dell. They can get shopping discounts at retailers like Gopuff and 1-800-Flowers. There are also promotions available at LensCrafters and restaurants, including Hard Rock Café and Landry’s.

An AARP membership costs $12 for the first year with automatic renewal. For subsequent years, you’ll pay $16 annually. Members receive benefits related to products and services including insurance, health care, entertainment, travel, restaurants, groceries, and technology and wireless services. Retirees can connect with AARP communities in person and online. There are additional opportunities through AARP including help with job searches and volunteer positions.

When choosing between AAA and AARP, consider your location and lifestyle. There could be certain benefits with one organization that align with your preferences and budget . After joining one, remember to ask when booking if there are discounts available for your membership.

Senior Living: An ode to shopping at Costco

Let me start with an unsponsored confession: I love Costco.

There, it’s out of the way. I’m promoting an enterprise, but they’re not paying me to do so. And I don’t want to annoy every merchant from coast to coast. Shop where you care to shop, dear readers. This is just a septuagenarian love song for my weekly excuse to get out of the house, go somewhere fun and spend an affordable chunk of my pension money.

So on to Costco. Get your shopping cart ready … and if you’re 40 years younger, sit Junior in that convenient rear section of the cart.

I’ll actually start in the parking lot. Two preliminary steps for an Old Fart: Park somewhere within a less-than-marathon march to the front door of Costco. Remember EXACTLY where you’ve parked. Or almost exactly. Or in the range where you can spot either your front hood or licence plate.

Next move: Fish out the membership card you will have to display on the way in after grabbing the aforementioned cart. And store it in your front pocket with the bank card you’ll be using to pay for the future necessities and very alluring non-necessities.

Now into the store …

First section, just inside the entrance: row after row of TVs. Each is huge. Each is beautiful. Each is not what you need, really … but it’s hard to take your eyes off those immense images.

But they cost a few bucks. Example: the 65-inch Samsung QLED 4K. It looks gorgeous — and maybe $998 is jumping out of your wallet (or, more likely, your credit card). You’ll be tempted. But you’ve probably got a decent TV that you watch until geezers’ bedtime at 9:30.

So onward. And fish out your shopping list — without accidentally dropping the cards I’ve advised you to store in your pocket. Onward to the food section, a.k.a. the Yummy Section a.k.a. the Don’t Linger in the Cake Section.

Here again, it’s wise to adhere to the carefully crafted list of foods you need … plus MAYBE a temptation or two. Maybe three.

The shopping list is governed by the size of your freezer … not to mention the stuff you’ve got stored there already. Suggested products: sausages, hamburger patties, fish fillets and — for a major treat — nice steaks.

On to the famous Costco bird. The company maintains the price of its barbecue chicken: $7.99. That’s at least two meals for me and my beloved partner. Plus the carcass can be boiled up to produce stock for soup.

I’m branching off into Chef Zone here. The message is: Score a BBQ bird. You won’t be disappointed.

Moving out of that zone, I head toward alcohol — the quantity I can handle at my delicate age … 60 years past having someone score a beer for a teenage squirt in the neighbourhood.

I’m no longer a squirt (though occasionally squirting, but that’s another column). I’m a beer snob at Costco, and my indulgence is Guinness draft Stout, canned at a brewery that was established in 1759 … or a few years before my legal drinking age.

It’s great beer that goes down well with any of my aforementioned meal products. And unlike my loopy behaviour as a college student, I can make do through dinner and an early evening with one 440 mL large can.

Add a four-litre box of half-assed Australian wine for my No Beer partner and I’m out of that Costco section … where perhaps I’ve spent too much time reminiscing about indulgences.

Now I’m in the home stretch of Costco: breakfast cereal, giant tin of ground coffee (which my stomach can barely handle), medical products I’ll not divulge.

My weekly outing is nearly completed. A glance at underwear bargains (again, I’ll not divulge) and on to the self checkout.

Having screwed up that process my first five or six times, I now know how to scan my purchases, pay my tab, gobble up a great hotdog and head for the exit, where a Costco clerk checks my bill and my cart’s contents.

Then it’s on to the car — which I eventually find.

General election latest: Labour lead grows to high not seen since Truss was PM - as Chancellor Jeremy Hunt admits tax cuts failed to dent poll deficit

A new poll shows Labour surging, despite the Diane Abbott row, as voters say the Tories have had a bad week. But a third of voters say the Labour campaign has not been a success so far. Meanwhile, Jeremy Hunt has admitted that the two tax cuts did not help boost Tory poll ratings.

Follow along in the morning as we keep up to date with the latest in 2024 General Election campaign.

The Liberal Democrats are announcing that they will "reverse Tory cuts" to the Public Health Grant and commit to investing £1bn a year as part of a key manifesto commitment.

The grant is paid to local authorities from the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) budget to provide preventative health services.

The party says there has been a 28% real-terms per person cut in the value of the Public Health Grant since 2015/16 - and that it has been cut in Rishi Sunak's Yorkshire seat by £5m.

Lib Dem deputy leader Daisy Cooper said in a statement that the Tories have "decimated public health funding, leaving Britain with a ticking time bomb of health challenges".

She went on: "The public health crisis in our country has Rishi Sunak's fingerprints all over it. He has slashed funding for vital local services that support children, failed to fix our crumbling hospitals and overseen a stark rise in health inequality.

"The Liberal Democrats would reverse these scandalous cuts and invest in empowering local communities and individuals to lead healthier lives."

In response, Health Secretary Victoria Atkins said all the Lib Dems have done during the campaign so far is "snipe from the sidelines and taken part in ridiculous gimmicks".

She said they would "prop up a Labour government" whose plans, in their view, have a £38.5bn "black hole".

"Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives have a clear plan and have taken bold action," she added.

The Conservative Party is pledging tonight to build 100 new GP surgeries if it wins the general election.

Rishi Sunak is also promising to modernise a further 150 existing surgeries, while also expanding his Pharmacy First pledge, saying more treatments would be available without needing to see a GP.

The expansion of the scheme would offer women more contraceptive options, deliver menopause support, and provide treatment for more conditions, such as acne and chest infections.

The Tories say that would free up 20 million GP appointments, once fully implemented.

They are also pledging an expansion of the Community Diagnostic Centres programme, building 50 more on top of the existing 160 which, they say, would expand capacity for another 2.5m checks and diagnostic tests.

The Tories say this will be paid for by cutting back the number of NHS managers to pre-pandemic levels and halving management consultancy spend across government, insisting the policy is "fully costed".

The pledge to build new GP surgeries is likely to raise eyebrows, however, after a "damning" report found that the government will not be able to deliver 40 new hospitals by 2030, as promised by the Tories at the last general election in 2019.

The National Audit Office (NAO) concluded that only 32 of the promised 40 hospitals would be delivered by 2030, due to the scheme being over-budget and hard to deliver ( read more from the report here ).

In a statement, Rishi Sunak said: "The NHS is one of our most important national assets and the Conservatives are taking the long-term decisions to secure its future.

"As part of our clear plan we are investing in community services making it quicker, easier and more convenient for patients to receive the care they need and help to relieve pressure on hospital services."

Hear more from Health Secretary Victoria Atkins live on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips from 8.30am tomorrow.

Jeremy Hunt has admitted that the two cuts to national insurance in the last year have not made a dent in the party's poll deficit.

According to the Sky News Poll Tracker , Labour's average lead over the Conservatives has hovered around 20% over the last year, and the government hoped that cutting national insurance by a total of four percentage points would boost their standing amid the cost of living crisis.

But the chancellor has admitted that those efforts failed.

Asked by the Mail on Sunday why the PM decided not to wait until the autumn to hold the election to allow for further tax cuts, as then Tory MPs were calling for, Mr Hunt said: "The fact that we've had two significant tax cuts that haven't really changed the polls demonstrates to me that having a third one with the same again is unlikely to change the calculus."

He also told the newspaper that the view of the Bank of England is that a cut to interest rates takes around 18 months for families to feel the difference, so "the idea that you have a drop in interest rates and suddenly everyone feels good... is to underestimate how people are making this decision".

But the Tories are today continuing to push Labour on the economy, and in particular around pensions.

The chancellor has announced what the party is calling a "Pensions Tax Guarantee", which is a promise not to introduce any new taxes on pensions or increase existing ones for the whole of the next parliament.

He attacked Labour, saying they will introduce a "retirement tax" and "betray pension holders to fill their fiscal blackhole".

He pointed to a suggestion Labour's Rachel Reeves endorsed in 2018 - before the last election and years before becoming shadow chancellor - to increase taxes on workplace pensions.

It's 10pm - here's what you need to know as the second Saturday of the election campaign comes to an end.

Both Labour and the Conservatives have been out on the campaign trail, launching their "battle buses" for the rest of this six-week race.

Let us get you up to speed on everything you may have missed today…

  • Labour was in Uxbridge , west London, kicking off a 5,000-mile trip around the UK on their "battle bus", fronted by deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner;
  • Launching the bus, Sir Keir Starmer made a few digs at the Conservatives - and former prime minister Boris Johnson, who was an MP in Uxbridge - saying of the bus: "This one I'm reliably told has got a fridge at the back of it, so check that Boris Johnson isn't in there - he used to be around these parts";
  • The joke is in reference to the former prime minister hiding in a fridge as he tried to avoid a TV interview with Good Morning Britain;
  • Later, Sir Keir refused to comment on the row with Diane Abbott , avoiding even saying her name when asked about the situation around her candidacy.
  • Senior frontbencher Steve Reed told Politics Hub With Ali Fortescue  that the Labour leader "hasn't changed his mind [on allowing her to stand] because Diane was never blocked from standing as an MP";
  • Former party adviser John McTernan told the programme that Sir Keir and Angela Rayner agreed behind that scenes that trying to block her was "a huge error" - and this was "bad party management";
  • A new poll has also showed Labour's lead at 20pts - a high not seen with that company, Opinium, since the Truss premiership.
  • Rishi Sunak has been in the North East of England, where he too launched a campaign bus baring the slogan: "clear plan, bold action, secure future";
  • Ahead of his arrival, a soundtrack of indie and pop from the 2000s and 2010s played, including Mr Brightside by the Killers, and Pumped Up Kicks by Foster The People, two US bands;
  • The Conservatives have also pledged to give £20m to 30 towns across the country - a move the Labour Party has branded a "reckless, unfunded commitment";
  • Science minister Andrew Griffith clarified today that this is a pledge of £600m - with £20m earmarked for each of the 30 towns identified by the party;
  • A new poll from Opinium showed Labour 20pts ahead, and 61% of voters do not think the Conservative campaign has been successful, with just 20% thinking it has been.
  • SNP  candidates have been out campaigning across Scotland, and the party's Europe spokesperson Alyn Smith insisted to  Politics Hub With Ali Fortescue  that voting for them is the best way to get rid of the Tories;
  • Workers Party of Britain  leader George Galloway launched their general election campaign, attacking both Sir Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak as "Blairites";
  • His party's policies, he said, are "of peace, equality, justice, an end to the slaughter in Gaza, and a new direction for Britain";
  • Mr Galloway also claimed he is a candidate for PM, and said he will be taking legal action against ITV and Ofcom to push for his inclusion in Tuesday's prime ministerial debate;
  • Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has been taking a break from the campaign trail today to "be a dad", and look after his son John - who has special needs;
  • Despite this, the Lib Dem campaign continued, with Treasury spokeswoman Sarah Olney on a visit in Eastbourne;
  • Reform UK leader Richard Tice has been in Skegness with honorary president Nigel Farage, and the pair were spotted stopping for an ice-cream and chatting with locals.

The pop band behind New Labour's 1997 anthem Things Can Only Get Better has banned Sir Keir Starmer from using the song in the election.

D:Ream's founding members Alan Mackenzie and Peter Cunnah said they were dismayed to hear their number one hit  play through a loudspeaker  as Rishi Sunak announced he was calling a general election on 4 July.

The pair told LBC their first thought was: "Not again."

But Sir Keir Starmer brushed off the snub, telling LBC: "Well, look, we're not in 1997. We're in 2024."

The prime minister has taken a defensive approach, signalling the Conservatives' worry about being so far behind in the polls.

Sir Keir Starmer's visits show the scale of their ambition and highlight Labour's awareness of the challenge they face. They need to gain 125 seats to win the smallest possible majority.

This campaign is being fought on new electoral boundaries, with many constituencies undergoing significant changes since 2019.

With just over a week of frenetic campaigning completed, read the full analysis of the approaches of the two main party leaders here:

Labour has announced plans to reduce net migration - with Sir Keir Starmer accusing the Conservatives of having "repeatedly broken their promises" to get the number down.

Figures published after Rishi Sunak called the general election showed a net of 685,000 arrived in the UK last year - down from a record of 764,000 in 2022.

The 2023 figure is still three times the number in 2019 when the last election took place - and the Tories pledged to reduce net migration.

Labour's proposals to reduce migration centre around boosting skills for British workers, and cracking down on employers that break the law.

The measures announced today are:

  • Machinery of government changes to ensure cross-Whitehall working to spot skills shortages, so training can be offered to tackle them and avoiding needing to recruit from overseas;
  • Banning employers and recruitment agencies that break employment law from being allowed to hire workers overseas;
  • Ending workplace exploitation, where "whereby migration is used as a way to undercut the terms and conditions of workers here";
  • Reforming the points-based immigration, brought in after Brexit, and legislation to instruct the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to work with other government agencies to ensure their approaches are aligned in organising training where there is a gap in skills.

Sir Keir has pledged a "a future Labour government will bring down net migration".

He said in a statement that under a government led by him, "Britain will be less reliant on migration by training more UK workers".

"The Tories have repeatedly broken their promises to bring down net migration," he added, and said they will make the immigration system "work for the people of this country".

On 12 June, Sky News will host an election leaders' event in Grimsby - a key marginal seat and one of our Target Towns this election year.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and the Conservative leader Rishi Sunak have been invited to attend, and we are looking for a live audience to join us on the night.

If you would like to be part of this studio audience, and be given the opportunity to ask a question to one of the party leaders, please complete the short questionnaire in this link .

Vacations for singles over 50s & 60s

Group laughing at a bar at sunset

Travelling single? Small group travel could be just the ticket

Is a  Japanese  onsen calling you? Or maybe a flavour-packed taco in the streets of  Mexico City  has your name on it? Whether you’re travelling solo, single or simply can’t be labelled, our small group tours are the perfect way to explore a destination and meet like-minded people. While our tours aren’t exclusively for single travellers in their  50s or 60s , you'll be part of a small group of intergenerational, adventure-hungry individuals who are just as keen to explore as you are. From swapping anecdotes over Aperols on the  Amalfi Coast  to late-night chats under the desert skies of Wadi Rum, it’s often those moments of connection – big and small – that are most memorable.

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

Our trips can be great for singles over 50 and 60 as we take care of safety, logistics and transport so you can focus your time on the joy of travel. We don’t offer the classic ‘singles-only’ tours, but we do provide the perfect base for people looking to get to know others, usually a varied mix of ages, nationalities, cultures and more. Since our tours are so diverse, this could mean you’re on a trip with couples in their 40s, singles in their 20s, family groups or people travelling on their own in their fifties and beyond. Our tours aren’t specifically designed for making perfect matches, but hey, if it happens, it  happens .

The best part of travelling in a small group is the friends you can make in the most unlikely of places – we’re talking while hiking the  Inca Trail  or cooking dhal in  Sri Lanka . It also means a bunch of new faces to share the world’s most epic experiences with and a few people around to watch your back (especially when walking through a traffic crossing in  Vietnam ). No matter who you’re sharing your trip with, you’ll be docking at unbelievable sites, meeting local people and getting a one-of-a-kind journey - single or not, we think that's pretty epic.

Travelling solo at any age can feel like a big deal, especially when venturing to far-off places. That’s why small group tours are the perfect fit, no matter if you’re travelling alone at 25 or 65. We’ll do the planning, manage the itinerary, handle the transport and keep  safety  in mind - all so you can immerse yourself to the max. Not to mention, your guide will be able to support you with potential language barriers, give recommendations, show you the best spots for photos and so much more. Don’t just take our word for it; find out for yourself.

Maybe you’ve already seen the big sites and now looking for a different experience or new perspective. That’s where we come in. Our tours are led by our Local Leaders, all of whom are experts in their corner of the world and are out there showing it to others right now. Their knowledge of their country’s attractions, delicacies, cultures and communities is something you probably won’t get to experience elsewhere. Find yourself ducking into unknown hotspots and learning more than just the basics when you’re on one of our trips.

Do I need a COVID-19 vaccine to join an Intrepid trip?

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical rating and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures, no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips, the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures , but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all travellers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation, but minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

For travellers who reside within the European Union, Switzerland or the USA, the requirement to purchase travel insurance cannot be compulsory. However, the purchase of travel insurance is still highly recommended, and travellers from these regions who decline travel insurance when travelling outside their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting, recognising personal responsibility for emergency medical and repatriation costs should they arise.

Will I have my own room?

It’s completely up to you. On our trips rooming is organised on a twin-share basis and we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. But if you'd like your own room, an individual room is available on the majority of our trips (it’s just a small extra charge). Just mention this to our  customer service team  when booking your trip and they'll arrange it for you.

As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open gender, multi-share basis (for example on a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam). In those instances it will clearly be stated in our Essential Trip Information prior to booking and travelling.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling solo or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). The amount of free time depends on the  travel style  - you can ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average), while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.
