Essential Britain & Ireland

Liz Ryan is an excellent guide and knows her history of Britain very well. The bus was very comfortable and even had USB ports for charging. And the free bottles of water, as needed, were greatly appreciated. All hotels were very clean with very good provided breakfasts and only one could have used a bathroom upgrade. All beds we used appeared to be queen size. We really enjoyed the optional live Irish dancing and show and dinner at "Taylors Three Rock" in Dublin. Perhaps information on the VAT tax and the procedures to get that refunded should be provided to guests before and after arrival. The tour we were on is called a 10 day tour but is actually only 8 days on the bus. We were impressed and feel it was well worth the cost!

Britain and Ireland Delight (Summer, 8 Days) Tour

Britain and Ireland Delight (Summer, 8 Days)

An amazing trip. Sarah Rose was the best tour guide we have ever had. Her knowledge of the history of the UK and Ireland was outstanding. We were looked after from the time we met before starting the trip until after we left then bus at the end. The extra activities were a highlight of the trip and Sarah was the bubbly personality that brought the 40 holiday makers together. A special mention to our bus driver Tomek who was on hand all hours to make sure we were at our destinations on time. Always friendly and willing to help if needed. I would highly recommend the trip and the staff that made this an unforgettable expe4ience. Regards John & Mary

What people love about UK and Great Britain Tours for Seniors

Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
I really enjoyed the trip
The driver, Billy, and tour director, Speedy, made the trip very interesting and informative. They were both very helpful. We were disappointed that some of the hotel didn’t really cater for the older tourist with rooms a fair distance from reception, climbing stairs and dragging our luggage.

Coach holidays in the UK: FAQs

Where do you meet the coach.

The departure point depends on the trip. For instance, day trips from London will usually pick up at Victoria Coach Station, a convenient hub for most Londoners (including the King and Queen - it’s just down the road from their pad. Take a look behind you next time you’re on board - you never know). Other trips will list meeting points, and there’s a good range so you can find somewhere convenient to you.

What are the best coach holidays for over 60s in the UK?

There are coach tours to suit all tastes, from sightseeing in a national park to a quick city getaway, and there’s a UK destination that will fit any bill. Of course, everyone has different tastes, and it’s difficult to pick one out above all others. This is why we selected a dozen - there’s bound to be something here for everyone.

Is coach travel eco-friendly?

The good news about coach travel is that it’s far more friendly to the planet than planes. That’s pretty much a given. On top of this though, it’s better than car travel (think of all the motors it takes off the roads) and it’s even a little bit bitter than train travel. Pick the right company, and you might find hotels that use renewables, which are growing in popularity.

It’s a great time to be an over-60-year-old coach traveller here in the UK. There’s simply no need to go further afield, to Europe or beyond. On these shores, you can find plenty of terrific holidays offered by ABTA-bonded specialists who will cater for the specific needs of 60+ tourists, with special attention given to the single traveller’s requirements.

Whether you're looking for a solo holiday, an adults-only getaway, or an all-inclusive package for the whole family, our selection of holiday providers has you covered. Click below to start your holiday search!

Whether you just want a day away, a short break or something a little longer, we have the holiday for you among our dozen dynamite destinations. Let’s go!

  • Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Bath.
  • Royal London Tour.
  • Llandudno, Snowdonia and Caenarfon.
  • Canterbury corner.
  • Weekend in Devon.
  • Welsh seaside.
  • Cotswolds and Downton.
  • Scarborough, Whitby and Historic York.
  • Eastbourne with Brighton Christmas Market.
  • Bosworth Hall, Stratford and Birmingham Christmas Market.
  • Highlands Christmas.
  • Blackpool Hogmanay.

That’s our list. Now let’s see what each of these fab holidays includes.

Winter outings

In the cold of January and February, it’s often the case that we hanker for a quick jaunt out to enjoy something that’s not too weather-dependent. Try these two, which both strike out from London.

1. Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Bath

This day trip to Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Bath gives centuries of appeal, all in one day.

After exploring the largest occupied castle in the world, the tour whisks you to the enigmatic - nay, utterly baffling - site of Stonehenge, where you can join the endless list of travellers throughout the ages who have stood and wondered what on earth these were erected for (a bit like we all did a few years ago with the Millenium Dome). Then there’s the city that’s as famed for its bonnetry as for its baths, that’s the one-and-only UNESCO city in the UK, glorious Bath.

Thousands of years of history in one day and back to London by 7pm. That’s what you call value.

2. Royal London Tour

While we’re talking about London, if you’ve always fancied spending a right regal day in the capital, you’ll love this experience . You get to see the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace and drive past the Palace of Westminster and the Royal Albert Hall.

The best bit, though, is in the afternoon, when you get to sample the delights of afternoon tea in a cafe tucked into one of the most magnificent buildings in England - Westminster Abbey. After all that royal touring in the morning, an afternoon tea here is the answer to anyone’s prayers.

Springing forth

When the weather starts to improve, it’s lovely to venture out and see the natural world coming back to life. Here are two very contrasting views of it, with a couple of castles thrown in for good measure. Well, it’s the fort that counts.

3. Llandudno, Snowdonia and Caenarfon

One of the wildest corners of the UK can be found in North Wales, where Snowdonia awaits the intrepid explorer with its rugged peaks and magnificent lakes. This is the perfect spot for a springtime trip, and this holiday gives you the very best of the region crammed into a four-night stay in the Victorian seaside resort of Llandudno, in the beautiful Marine Hotel overlooking the Irish Sea.

Included are trips to world-famous mountaineering country, including Betws-y-Coed and Conwy, and Caernarfon Castle, one of the best fortresses in the business. There’s also an optional excursion to Anglesey, for those hankering for some island life.

4. Canterbury corner

Not for nothing is Kent known as the Garden of England, and you can’t beat an English garden in the spring. Kent has an aesthetic appeal that makes it look like Capability Brown had a hand in just about every part. This is especially the case with the 500-acre wonderland that surrounds the misleadingly named Leeds Castle, which is to be found close to Maidstone rather than in West Yorkshire, as you’ll find out on this quick coach trip out to heaven and back.

As well as this picturesque stronghold, you’ll get to see Canterbury Cathedral, one of the most important buildings in Britain, being the Anglican headquarters and the objective of Chaucer’s fabled travellers. Finally, you’re given your chance to get all Dame Vera when you see one of the most inimitable symbols of Great Britain, the white cliffs of Dover. Stirring stuff.

Summer by the sea

For many, this is the quintessential UK holiday. So get your bucket and spade. Ours is a Mr Whippy.

5. Weekend in Devon

Mention Torquay to those of a particular vintage, and a certain hotelier silly-walks his way into the mind, usually hotly in pursuit of a hapless Catalan waiter. It should go without saying, though, that the English Riviera has so much more to it than being just the setting for Mr Fawlty’s unique operation. This weekend in the Trecarn Hotel in Babbacombe will convince you of it.

You’re excellently placed to enjoy all that this seaside wonderland has to offer, so it’s a great trip for the summer months. Included is a trip to the bustling city of Exeter, and there’s an optional trip to the jewel of East Devon, Sidmouth, which is like a little secret that nobody has let you in on, until now. This is why visitors are asked to sign a secrecy clause on leaving this simply gorgeous Regency town by the sea.

6. Welsh seaside

The UK has, of course, more than its fair share of fabulous seaside resorts. From the vast sandy stretches of Scotland to the balmy coves of the Isle of Wight , we are truly blessed in Britain in this regard. For our money though, one of the finest seaside experiences to be had is over in Porthcawl, a lovely resort nestled right on the edge of the outstanding Glamorgan Heritage Coast.

This coach trip to the Principality takes you to this enchanting part of the country for a good old-fashioned seaside holiday, with trips to Cardiff and Swansea thrown in for good measure. Blooming bendigedig , as they say in Wales. Well, the ones who can speak Welsh do.

Autumn destinations

As the nights draw in, it’s tempting to think cosy, and there’s not much cosier than Downton Abbey. There’s a good deal cosier than a night among Yorkshire ghouls however…

7. Cotswolds and Downton

Not every holiday gives you the chance to tread in the footsteps of our nation’s most popular PM and our nation’s most popular aristocratic dynasty. Take this coach to the Cotswolds , and you’ll be rewarded with an experience you’ll never forget.

Where you’re headed is, ultimately, the incredible sight of Blenheim Palace, truly one of the world’s greatest stately homes. Think Versailles, but one or two less fountains, no language barrier and easier to get to. It’s the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough, and the birthplace of one Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, the inspiration both for a country torn into tatters by wartime strife and that nodding dog on the television.

However, before checking out where baby Winnie had his nappies changed, you’ve got an earlier treat to experience. You’ll be taken to Bampton, the very place where Downton Abbey’s village scenes are filmed, and you’ll see Isobel Crawley’s home and the local cottage hospital. The coach then takes you to Bourton-on-the-Water, the unfeasibly gorgeous ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’, before you come face to face with Churchill’s old gaff.

8. Scarborough, Whitby and Historic York

When it comes to Halloween, there’s only one serious contender in terms of places to go. It has to be the singularly scary town of Whitby, famed for its associations with Dracula and for the no-holds-barred fright-fest that takes place there every year.

This holiday will take you up to a hotel in Scare- sorry, Scarborough, where you’ll stay four nights, and from there, you’ll be taken on an excursion to fascinating York, with its imposing Minster and quirky Shambles (and don’t forget to make tracks for the National Railway Museum).

And, for those not too terrified to brave it, there’s a journey to the mouth of hell, well, near enough. Actually, Whitby is a fantastic place to visit, full of interesting little shops and historic corners. The abbey ruins are not to be missed - truly atmospheric and a view to die for. Did somebody say die for?

OK, Whitby has certainly made a name for itself as the go-to Goth and Steampunk Halloween happening. The streets become thronged with cavorting people enjoying the darker side of life, or just having a nice toffee apple and posing for selfies.

In all honesty, it’s a fabulous homegrown street carnival, and if you like exciting vibes, then you’ll love Whitby at the end of October. If you like something quieter, venture this way in September. It’s after the tourists have gone, and it’s not too cold. Don’t want you getting any chilling experiences…

Christmas markets

The UK has upped its Christmas game to compete with the market malarkey going on over in Austria and Germany. The two we’ve picked here are particularly good as they offer a surfeit of things to do alongside haggling over a bauble.

9. Eastbourne with Brighton Christmas Market

This five-day holiday takes you to Eastbourne, one of the relatively unsung gems of the south coast. What a lot of people manage to miss in their rush to reach Brighton and the more celebrated seaside destinations, is that Eastbourne has retained its character and managed to avoid the excesses of modernisation and development that might have befallen some of its neighbours.

Film fact fans may be interested to learn that this is precisely why it was chosen as the stand-in for 1930s Brighton in the 2010 version of Brighton Rock. While you aren’t guaranteed an encounter with Pinkie or any of his underworld pals, you will certainly experience plenty of historic charm when staying in the magnificent Victorian Queens Hotel overlooking the pier.

On Day 2, you’ll be whisked over to Brighton to take in all that the infamous seaside resort has to offer, not least its fabulous Christmas market, with over 150 stalls to tempt you into some souvenir-purchasing.

To top it all off, you can do as the Normans did and head to Hastings, where you’ll spend the final full day of your holiday.

10. Bosworth Hall, Stratford and Birmingham Christmas Markets

Up to the midlands now, where you can spend three nights in Bosworth Hall, a fabulously atmospheric and luxurious hotel that’s actually a 17th-century mansion set in 11 acres of landscaped loveliness.

Your days on this sensationally seasonal sojourn will be spent first at one of the biggest and best British Christmas markets, even though it’s actually German-themed (that’s why it’s called the Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market). Wooden trinkets and Black Forest crafts are the order of the day, and after some time moseying among the marionettes and miniatures, you’ll be ready to be bowled over by the bratwurst and glued to the gluhwein.

The next day will see you (Christmas) spirited over to Stratford-on-Avon, Shakey’s hangout. That’s Shakespeare, not Shakin’ Stevens. Sorry to disappoint. Anyway, you’ll be able to see where the bard’s boots actually trod, which is a big deal, and far from Much Ado About Nothing. After that, it’s over to Leamington Spa to check out its festive lights.

That’s all super. But that’s not all. The itinerary promises ‘a place of interest’ on the journey home. Super exciting. If it turns out to be Woodall Services, then we can only apologise.

Christmas and New Year

If your idea of Christmas agony is having to do all that cooking and washing up yourself, then you might be tempted by a holiday like the first of these two.

11. Highlands Christmas

Try this one: the Fort William Christmas . Festive fun takes place in the magnificent surrounds of the Croit Anna Hotel, perched on the edge of Loche Linnhe.

For those who like to get a seasonal outdoors fix, the delights of the Western Scottish Highlands wait to be explored, courtesy of excursions to the Ben Nevis range and to Glenfinnan, where you can pay your respects to the Jacobite rebels of ‘45 (i.e. 1745, not 1945 - just in case you were wondering if they had a problem with rationing or they couldn’t bear another radio episode of ITMA).

12. Blackpool Hogmanay

So, after all that Christmas caper, you’ll be in the mood for a New Year celebration, no doubt. So, off to Edinburgh, is it? Scotland, of course, has its draws, especially around this time of year, but we thought we’d try something a little different.

The northwest of England tends to be simplified by those who really should know better into a bunch of cities and sports teams (Liverpool, Manchester, St Helens, etc), an incredibly beautiful district full of lakes called, er, the Lake District, and a place which is utterly unlike anywhere else: Blackpool.

For many years, Blackpool was the number 1 European tourist destination. That’s pretty incredible for a town not necessarily blessed with a climate like that of, say, Italy. But there are solid reasons for its popularity that still exist today. It’s got architectural interest, it’s got an amazing beach, and, more than anything, it’s fun, as you’ll find out on the Blackpool Hogmanay trip, where you can welcome in the New Year amid the revelry that this town is famous for.

Time to go home

So, we’ve taken you on a whistle-stop (or are these just trains?) tour of UK coach holidays, and you’re probably itching to get out there. We certainly are. The beauty of it all is that, no matter what you want to do, there’ll be a coach holiday for you. Want to discover the quieter corners of Cornwall? Want to be sent to Coventry? Or do you just want to be taken somewhere with tinsel? There’s a tour manager just waiting to take you there.

We’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible. We haven’t even mentioned Northern Ireland, for instance, or the award-winning options for self-drive and even river cruises that you can link to a great over 60s UK coach holiday. Wherever you go and whatever you do, whether it’s bashing around Bristol or bobbing about Bournemouth, we hope you have a truly wonderful time.

When is the best time to go on your UK trip?

Spring (late March to early June) and autumn (September to November) are the optimal seasons to visit the United Kingdom. During these times, the weather is typically warm and dry, offering visitors the chance to witness the blooming of beautiful spring flowers or the vibrant changing of leaves in autumn. This period also allows tourists to steer clear of the busier summer months, enhancing their overall experience.

Why choose a small group tour?

Since 1983, Odyssey has been a distinguished provider of educational small group tours tailored for seniors , with group sizes typically ranging from 6 to 12 individuals, capped at a maximum of 18 travellers. Specializing in enriching educational, cultural, and heritage journeys, our programs are meticulously crafted to stimulate minds and push boundaries. Geared towards active and curious explorers, our tours offer a unique small group setting conducive to immersive learning experiences.

What's the accommodation like on a group tour?

In urban centres, Odyssey accommodates guests in conveniently situated 3-4 star hotels, offering convenient access to public transportation. For smaller communities or rural settings, our preference leans towards family-operated hotels or cosy guesthouses. For extended tours where guests remain in one place throughout the itinerary, we opt for serviced apartments to provide a comfortable and homely setting for our travellers.

What ages are the group holidays suitable for?

Odyssey Traveller specializes in catering to travelers aged 50, 60, 70, or 80 and above, whether they are exploring solo, with a partner, or in a group of friends. Your fellow travelers are likely to resonate with your interests, ensuring a shared experience in a setting of mutual understanding. Our programs are thoughtfully crafted with the mature traveler in focus. Even when journeying solo, you are never truly alone – during leisure time for exploration, there will be other solo travelers or couples eager to accompany you if you so desire. Notably, single travelers comprise about a third of our groups, with many becoming regular participants in our tours.

How big are the group sizes on your tours?

Odyssey specialises in educational small group tours , for seniors , typically groups between 6 to 12 people, and averages at 12 participants per tour, a mix of singles and couples.

First solo trip with Odyssey?

Odyssey provides a curated selection of authentic small group tours, which are strategically priced to mirror the intimate nature of these experiences. Unlike larger tour operators accommodating groups of 18 or more, our small group tours typically consist of 6 to 12 individuals. This ensures a personalized setting where travelers can relish evening meals together around a single dinner table. By prioritizing smaller group sizes, we prioritize creating an atmosphere where our clients can immerse themselves fully in the unique and engaging experiences we offer, rather than aiming for the economies of scale achievable with larger groups on coaches – an aspect of travel that distinguishes our tours at Odyssey.

Odyssey tours are genuinely based around;

  • A Small group tour of less than 18 people for the mature traveller as holidays for a couple and holidays for solo travellers over 50.
  • Knowledgeable local expert guides and a great tour leader who has an interest in the theme of the tour.
  • Inclusive pricing, including all entrances, tipping and the majority of meals included. That means, no hidden extras with respect to cost. Transparent pricing of the single supplement for the single traveller.
  • A learning based escorted tour with a like minded fellow traveller.
  • Accommodation in 3 & 4 star hotels and self catering apartments.
  • A blend of group learning, touring activities and free time to explore a place further, whether on a discovery or walking holiday program.
  • No name badges or flags to follow when out and about.
  • Travel to places that extend your learning and curiosity, often where others will not follow.
  • Spending typically between 60 to 85% of the operating cost of the tour in the country visited, benefiting the local communities directly.

Do you have any other holidays that aren't with a group?

Odyssey welcome enquiries for private groups, at a minimum of 6 participants.

What is a small group tour?

Odyssey Travel’s small group tours typically span 2 to 3 weeks, with stays of 2 to 3 nights in each location at quality 3 or 4 star hotels. These escorted tours offer a balanced mix of sightseeing and leisure time. Travelers have opportunities to break away from the group for a half or full day to explore independently or with companions before moving on to the next destination. For solo travelers over 50, Odyssey offers a wide selection of holidays, although they do not provide regular river cruises or specific solo travel tours.

Solo travelers booking Odyssey Travel tours will incur a single supplement fee, covering the cost of single occupancy accommodations with a double bed (single bed rooms are generally not available across Europe) or a single cabin on cruises. There are no extra charges beyond the single supplement for clients aged 50 and above booking solo travel packages, ensuring transparent pricing for all travelers.

Which countries do small group tours go to?

Odyssey Traveller offers an array of captivating tours spanning the globe, including Europe , The British Isles , Asia , Africa , The Middle East , and The Americas. Embark on an enchanting journey to witness the mystical Aurora Borealis in the remote corners of Norway, delve into the lush jungles of Madagascar to immerse yourself in its breathtaking landscapes and wildlife, or marvel at the ancient splendor of Machu Picchu in South America. For those intrigued by history, partake in a thematic exploration of Britain’s historic canals and railways . If cruising is your preference, join our unforgettable venture through Mongolia and Russia, featuring a 10-night river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg, or set sail on the legendary Nile Rive r during our Egypt tour.

For travelers seeking adventures closer to home, we offer an exceptional selection of tours in Australia , ranging from Western Australia, South Australia, and the Northern Territory to Kata Tjuta, Outback Queensland, Kangaroo Island, Tasmania, and New Zealand. Explore the scenic wonders of both the North and South Islands, including the majestic landscapes along the east coast, the geothermal marvels of Rotorua, the serene beauty of Milford Sound, and the adrenaline-pumping activities in Queenstown.

Holidays with Care for the Elderly with Limited Mobility

Going on holiday organised by Mum and Dad was generally a great time when we were young – perhaps until the teenage years.  So it may feel a bit daunting if now the roles are reversed and you’re organising their holidays, but don’t despair.

Parents may have special circumstances such as limited mobility or care needs whilst away, luckily more holiday companies are providing these services making holidays for elderly with limited mobility much easier. Age Space have put together this guide on planning a holidays with care for the elderly to help make sure you’ve got everything covered.

What are their needs?

The first stage in planning is to assess what support and services they may need throughout their holiday. Create a list and write down any aspect you feel may require any sort of assistance help or special circumstance.

Some things to note may be:

  • Limited mobility or wheelchair bound
  • Limited or minimal hearing ability
  • Visually impaired
  • Any illnesses
  • Any current or reccurring injuries
  • Do they require a carer whilst on holiday?

Choosing Holidays For Elderly with Limited Mobility

Picking the right type of holiday.

Once you have finished assessing what their needs are, you can start looking at what type of holiday would be most suitable for them based on what they want from a holiday. Are they looking for a nice relaxing holiday abroad? What about a spa retreat for a long weekend? Or perhaps they are more active and want to go on a nice countryside walking holiday. Luckily there are holidays that are designed to suit everyone’s needs.

Planning a holiday for elderly parents

The devil is in the detail however.  Is the hotel fully disability friendly? Do they provide any sort of transportation or trips whilst there? (if so do they have ramps in case of a wheelchair). Along with these, don’t forget the small things such as a handrails in the bathroom and elevator accessibility if needed.

The internet can be your biggest friend when looking for various selections of holiday and most big travel agent’s websites will be filled with information to help you. There are also other specialist websites that can help you find the holiday with the elderly in mind. Some examples are:

Silver Travel Advisor

Silver travel advisor has lots of information, advice and travel reviews. All of which is specifically designed for travellers over the age of 50. They can give you advice on holiday type, country, hotels, airport services and baggage services to name a few.

Disabled Holidays

This website is essentially a travel agents designed specifically for those with disabilities and special needs. They offer full financial protection, accessible room guarantees, mobility equipment hire, flights and airport assistance and adapted transfers. This can be a great place to look for planning a holiday for elderly parents suited exactly for their needs.

Revitalise is a great charity on a mission to give the elderly and disabled respite breaks in holiday homes set in Southport , Southampton and Essex . Revitalise believe that the elderly and disabled should be able to have the same rights, freedoms, responsibilities and quality of life as those without disabilities. Giving people the chance to experience a relaxed, holiday-style environment with a variety of trips and activities. Offering support to the elderly, disabled and their carers, guests will be supported by volunteers who provide companionship and assistance to make everyone’s holiday a more relaxing experience.

Enable Holidays

Enable Holidays is a great website giving you plenty of options for holidays in the UK and abroad. It all depends on what type of holiday you and your elderly parent are looking for. You can choose whether you require assisted holidays that provide additional support to you and your family or if you just want a quiet family holiday it’s entirely your choice. Aimed at giving the elderly and disabled an enjoyable holiday with no worries at all, every destination and all facilities are wheelchair friendly including wheelchair access, wheelchair hoists at swimming pools, disabled toilets and changing rooms.

Care and support whilst on holiday

Although your parents may be able to take care of certain needs, this isn’t always possible and they are not always able. This may mean that you need to seek a holiday in which these care aspects are included into the package.

planning a holiday for elderly parents

An example of a holiday company that provide this is Richmond Villages . They have award winning retirement holiday sites across England and provide care on site 24/7. They have excellent facilities and a fantastic choice for elderly who have specialist needs. There are others like this which can be exactly the type of holiday you are looking for when planning a holiday for elderly parents who require care.

There is also the option (although more expensive) to hire a carer/companion service which can accompany your elderly parents on their holiday and provide all the care services they require. UK Care  offers such a service, you can enquire about this on their website.

Compare Travel Insurance with QuoteZone

Getting Travel Insurance for older people is tough, especially when they have pre-existing conditions . Using a price comparison tool like Quotezone can be good to see what is out there. If Quotezone can’t help you, they’ll give you several options of people that might be able to.

Remember the little things

It is easy to get caught up on the big details that sometimes we forget the simplest of things, we have got some information to help remind you of these.

Planning a holiday for elderly parents

Make sure that you have a copy of all their usual medication with you before they go, this will help to let other people know what they may need in case of an emergency. You should also ensure that they get there prescriptions filled and make sure they have sufficient enough of each of their medications/pills so they do not fall short while on holiday.

Often the top of the to-do list – and rightly so!  Who looks after the pets if they can’t go on the holiday aswell?

House checks

It may be well worth checking the house after they have left to make sure everything is locked up, alarms on and all plugs are switched off. Letting them know you are checking up on the house will also help give them reassurance that everything is safe.

And more…

Although we hope nothing will go wrong for them with all of the planning, it’s a good idea to make a note of a few things just in case of any issues or emergencies.

  • Take a copy of all documents including passports, travel insurance, flight and transfer details, hotel details and any information that is sent to them via post. These may come in useful!
  • Find out all emergency contact numbers for the holiday destination, taxi numbers and any local hospitals to where they are.
  • Make a note of your parent’s bank account details, national insurance numbers and passport number.
  • Although we know the elderly don’t always like the latest technology, giving them a simple and easy to use mobile phone can make sure that if they really need to contact you (or vice versa) that can be done easily. You can buy cheap pre-paid and topped up phones from any phone shop. (We suggest getting the simplest one they do with big buttons). You can set it all up before you give it to them.

Travelling Companions programme

The Travelling Companions programme at Age UK supported older people who were feeling lonely or struggling to get out and about.

What is the Travelling Companions programme?

The impact of the programme, where did the programme run.

In June 2022, Age UK set up a pilot programme to support lonely and isolated older people to get out and about, by matching them with trained volunteers or staff members called Travelling Companions. The pilot programme ended in July 2023.

The pilot was interested in exploring the link between transport and loneliness. When older people don't have the knowledge or confidence needed to access local transport links, they then may be unable to access local services that can build social connections and help to reduce feelings of loneliness. Therefore, helping older people with transport and travel was the first step to improving access to the support and services that local Age UKs and their community offer.

In total, the service supported 320 older people over the course of 679 sessions. Each older person was matched with a Travelling Companion, to receive personalised and specific one-to-one support to help them achieve their travel goals. The outcomes of these sessions found:

  • Using the bus and walking were the most popular ways to travel.
  • In most cases, older people wished to use the service to learn how to travel to a specific destination (for example a service, activity or club).
  • The most popular referrals that were made after older people finished their Travelling Companions sessions were Age UK clubs, befriending services and exercise classes.

In terms of the difference the service made to older people, we found that:

  • Overall, 44.6% increased their level of reported social interaction and travel-related confidence increased whilst travel-related anxiety decreased.
  • On average, the number of journeys completed per week by walking and public transport increased.
  • Statistically, we are 95% confident that the programme supported older people to reduce their feelings of loneliness.

Want more information about Age UK transport services?

Age UK runs a number of transport services for older people across the country, such as door-to-door wheelchair-accessible minibus services to take older people to attend GP appointments or go to the shops.

A couple in their 80s say they were left in Spain by Norweigan Cruise Line a month after the same cruise company sailed off from an African island, leaving eight passengers behind.

Richard and Claudene Gordon, ages 84 and 81, had left their home in Salt Lake City , Utah, to embark on a vacation around the Mediterranean aboard the Norweigan Viva cruise ship, along with their family and friends to celebrate Mr Gordon’s 85th birthday, this week.

However, their trip took a drastic turn on Monday when the couple booked an independent excursion, not organised by the cruise line, while docked in Motril, Spain, to the historic city of Granada, the pair told CNN.

On their return back, their bus was delayed for an hour while a rain storm hit the region, meaning the couple missed the ship’s all-aboard time of 5.30pm to sail away at around 6pm.

“I am a very experienced traveller and have probably been on as many as 30 cruises during my lifetime,” Mr Gordon told the outlet. “Never before have we ever missed catching a ship on time at a port . So we are not someone who abuses the system.”

Along with the rest of their party, the ship sailed away to its next destination with Ms Gordon’s medication, Mr Gordon’s eyeglasses and both their spare hearing aid batteries and phone chargers.

The incident occured almost a month after eight passengers with Norweigan Cruise Line were left on the island nation of São Tomé and Principe after a private tour overran.

While the passengers claim they had to spend thousands in attempts to catch up with the ship, the cruise line said the passengers were “responsible” for returning to the vessel at the designated all-aboard time.

The Gordons told the outlet that they eventually made it to the dock by taxi at 6.10pm, but their cruise ship had already started to set sail.

At around 5.45pm, Mr Gordon said he phoned a relative on board, who told the cruise staff that they were nearby but running late; however, the staff allegedly replied that the ship needed to sail on time and nothing could be done.

“Our cruise began in Lisbon and we departed from Lisbon about one and a half hours after the scheduled departure at 4pm,” Mr Gordon told CNN. “Then the next night or two, at least a half-hour late from the dock, so it is clear that they do not always leave on the exact moment scheduled.”

Stranded on the Spanish dock, the couple tried to talk to local police, but they said they could not do anything, so they took a bus up to Granada and stayed in a little B&B since they had not heard from Norweigan Cruise Line at that point.

The couple’s daughter then booked them on a flight to Palma de Mallorca, where the ship would be docking at 8am on Wednesday.

Late Tuesday afternoon, the couple said that Norweigan Cruise Line had made contact with them for the first time since they were left on the port, and offered them a taxi from their Palma hotel to reunite them with the vessel, the outlet reported.

The couple said they said that they received “royal treatment” when a BMW limousine turned up and took them to the ship where they were met by senior cruise staff who escorted them to breakfast.

“We simply told them that we were abandoned at the dock with no one to meet us or tell us where to go, and they said they have already complained about the harbor master who was supposed to take care of things for them. But of course, the ship had not contacted us directly for two days so that doesn’t speak so well for them,” Ms Gordon told the outlet.

Norwegian Cruise Line, however, disputed the couple’s arrival time at the pier. It said they were “approximately an hour late,” in a statement to CNN.

“A cruise ship follows a set itinerary with designated arrival and departure times. Itineraries are carefully coordinated and planned out well in advance of each voyage to ensure that all of our guests have the experience they are expecting.” It added that while they keep a small window for late guests to be accommodated, the Gordons arrived outside of this.

“After several attempts to contact these guests with the phone numbers provided, as well as trying to phone their emergency contact, we were unable to speak to them directly. However, we worked closely with the local port agents to make arrangements for the guests to rejoin the vessel.”

The cruise spokesperson added that prior to their hotel pick-up on Wednesday morning, the ship had coordaited an airport pickup for them at Palma de Mallorca the evening prior, but were still unreachable by phone.

The Independent has contacted Norweigan Cruise Line for comment.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Politics live: Rishi Sunak accused of 'gaslighting' UK on economy; Scotland's new first minister to be confirmed

The government is "gaslighting" the public about the state of the economy, the shadow chancellor will say on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the SNP has named John Swinney as its new leader to replace Humza Yousaf.

  • MoD 'acted swiftly' to take 'third-party' hacked data base offline
  • PM 'gaslighting' public about state of economy, Labour to claim
  • John Swinney set to become Scottish first minister

  • Vote 2024:   Council results in full  |  Mayoral results in full
  • Live reporting by Faith Ridler

Mel Stride, the work and pensions secretary, has said the Ministry of Defence acted "very swiftly" in the face of a data breach Sky News understands was made by China.

MPs will be told today of a massive data breach involving the MoD, targeting service personnel.

The government will not name the country involved, but Sky News understands this to be China.

Asked about this, Mr Stride says: "We will know that when Grant Shapps the defence secretary makes a statement to parliament later on this afternoon.

"What I can tell you is the MoD has acted very swiftly to take this data base offline, it's a third-party data base and certainly not one run directly by the MoD.

"And of course they are there to advise and provide support to those who may be concerned about the fact that this data has been breached."

Asked if it is concerning, Mr Stride reiterates that the targeted data was not "an MoD data base as such, it was a third party".

"But nonetheless that's still a very significant matter and Grant Shapps will be addressing that in parliament this afternoon."

He adds: "We take cyber security extremely seriously."

However, he refuses to comment further ahead of Mr Shapps' statement.

Asked if China is a threat, Mr Stride says the UK has recognised "that China is an epoch-defining challenge".

Pressed if they are an enemy, the minister says they are "most definitely a challenge", and it is important to find a "balance" and make sure "we are sensible in terms of protecting ourselves".

We've just been hearing from our deputy political editor Sam Coates , who last night broke the news that it is understood the Chinese state has hacked the Ministry of Defence.

He said: "This is understood to be the Chinese state, possibly working through a contractor, targeting the payroll systems of the Ministry of Defence.

"They are the payroll systems used by serving members of the Armed Forces and some veterans.

"The details that were potentially compromised were bank details, names and in some cases - although they're trying to downplay this - addresses.

"I think there has been an enormous effort since this was discovered at the back end of last week to try and work out exactly what's happened.

"They're not sure how much data if any the Chinese were able to get hold of.

"There is going to be a big effort to reassure people - reassure veterans and serving personnel today - that they will be paid, even though this system is separate from the MoD.

"But I think there is enormous nervousness at once again systems being compromised. We saw the Electoral Commission being talked about a couple of months ago by the deputy prime minister.

"I think it's very significant, it's information about serving personnel."

By Jenness Mitchell , Scotland reporter

New SNP leader John Swinney has promised a "new chapter" as he admitted his party has been through a "rough time recently".

Mr Swinney has replaced Humza Yousaf and could become Scotland's seventh first minister as early as Tuesday.

The SNP leadership nominations closed at 12pm on Monday, with the party confirming Mr Swinney was the sole nominee.

Mr Swinney, who was SNP leader between 2000 and 2004, said he was "deeply honoured" to take on the role and his appointment was "the beginning of a new chapter" for the party.

While he said the SNP has "faced a rough time recently as a party", he insisted: "Now, I know there's some controversy that I'm the only candidate to stand for the leadership.

You can read more from Sky News below:

The government is "gaslighting" the public about the state of the economy, the shadow chancellor will say on Tuesday.

Rachel Reeves is set to attack the Conservatives in a speech in the City of London, as the opposition takes the fight to the government on their own turf ahead of the general election.

Running a strong economy has long been the focus of Conservative election campaigns.

And with a raft of economic data coming out this week, Ms Reeves will be looking to get ahead of the government's messaging - saying Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak claiming the economy is improving is "deluded".

The Bank of England will on Thursday make its latest decision on interest rates, with expectations that borrowing costs will be held at 5.25%.

By Sam Coates , deputy political editor

The Chinese state has hacked the Ministry of Defence, Sky News understands.

The Chinese state is to be accused of two or three attempts at hacking MoD employees - including personnel.

The cyberattack was on a payroll system with current service personnel and some veterans. It is largely names and bank details that have been exposed. All salaries will be paid this month.

Tobias Ellwood, a Conservative MP and former soldier, told Sky News that China "was probably looking at the financially vulnerable with a view that they may be coerced in exchange for cash".

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps is expected to make a statement to the Commons today, with the BBC reporting he will set out a "multi-point plan" which will include action to protect affected service men and women.

Good morning!

Welcome back to the Politics Hub  on Tuesday, 7 May.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Fallout will likely continue after Sky News learned that the Chinese state hacked the Ministry of Defence ;
  • MPs will be told today of a massive data breach involving the MoD, targeting service personnel;
  • We're expecting the Liberal Democrats to table a motion of no confidence in the government today, in a bid to force Rishi Sunak to call a general election for June;
  • This is in the wake of damaging local election results for the Conservatives, who lost 474 council seats and a key mayoral position in the West Midlands;
  • We will see Rishi Sunak out and about in London today, as the Tories attempt to put a positive spin on these election results;
  • Also today, shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves is delivering a speech in the City of London. She will accuse Mr Sunak and Jeremy Hunt of "gaslighting" the British people about the state of the economy;
  • And John Swinney is due to be confirmed as Scotland's first minister after a vote today. He was confirmed as SNP leader on Monday, with no opposition.

We'll be discussing all of this and more with:

  • Work and pensions secretary Mel Stride at 7.20am;
  • Labour's Darren Jones at 8.15am.

Follow along for all the latest news and analysis throughout today.

Despite it being a bank holiday, the Politics Hub has kept on trucking today with more fallout from last week's local elections and the SNP naming its new leader.

Here's what you need to know to catch up:

  • John Swinney was named the new leader of the SNP and vowed to unify both the party and Scotland, while still making the case for independence ;
  • Rishi Sunak insisted the general election is "not a foregone conclusion" despite a bruising set of local results for the Tories ;
  • But Labour accused the prime minister of "hiding from voters" by not setting the date for a national vote ;
  • Documents seen by Sky News revealed the government considered using Iraq for a Rwanda-style deportation scheme ;
  • Keir Starmer warned Israel against a seemingly imminent military offensive in the Gazan city of Rafah .

Good night - we'll be back tomorrow.

Rishi Sunak's internal critics have abandoned their attempt to unseat him because they have run out of time and do not believe Penny Mordaunt would do what is necessary to save the party.

The Politics At Jack And Sam's podcast discusses how the PM is unlikely to face a challenge but will be confronted by an exhausted, sceptical and in parts broken Tory party when parliament returns tomorrow.

He faces legislative challenges in the coming weeks, with revolts on the criminal justice bill and sentencing bill, that could be aggravated by the party's poor performance.

But efforts by plotters to oust Mr Sunak have been abandoned.

Train drivers begin a fresh wave of strikes tomorrow.

They are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from tomorrow to Thursday.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime until Saturday.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when…

The Foreign Office has denied the UK's ambassador to Russia was "summoned" by officials in Moscow over military support for Ukraine.

It comes after Russia warned Ukrainian strikes on its territory with UK-supplied weapons could bring retaliatory attacks against British military facilities and equipment on Ukrainian soil or elsewhere.

Russia's foreign ministry said the UK's ambassador to Moscow, Nigel Casey, had been "summoned" to make him "reflect on the inevitable catastrophic consequences of such hostile steps by London".

But the Foreign Office said he had just taken part in a diplomatic meeting with ministry officials.

"The ambassador reiterated the UK's support for Ukraine in the face of unprovoked Russian aggression, and restated the UK's position on providing support to Ukraine," said a statement.
