And anyone who sells travel insurance must be licensed in Saskatchewan , New Brunswick , the Northwest Territories , and Nunavut . Licensing information is not available for the other regions of Canada. Travel agents across the country can also choose to become certified through the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA) .
  • Tour guides are not regulated in most areas of Canada, but they must be licensed in Montreal and Quebec City . And tourism operators require a license in the Northwest Territories .

  • 3 Steps to Become a Travel Agent in Ontario!

Being a travel agent is a rewarding and exciting career.

Generally, travel agents either work from home or from a travel agency office. Whether you choose to be a home-based or agency-based agent, there are important certification requirements that you need to be aware of if you want to work and legally sell travel services in Ontario.

The travel industry in Ontario is regulated. The Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) is Ontario’s travel regulator and administers the legislation that regulates the approximately 1,925 travel retailers, websites and travel wholesalers (tour operators) located and operating in the province.

Every person in Ontario who works for a retail travel agency and sells travel services or provides travel advice to the public must, by law, complete TICO’s Education Standards Program and obtain TICO certification. Here are three steps to get started in the travel industry in Ontario:

STEP 1: Consider your training options    

Before obtaining your TICO certification, consider the various education and training options available to choose from. Completing one of these programs is not mandatory , but something to consider.

You can complete a travel and tourism program in person or online at several colleges or specialized tourism training institutes.  Having the proper training and credentials is extremely valuable and can help you be more successful in your career.

STEP 2: Pass the TICO Education Standards Exam

In Ontario, all travel agencies must be registered with  TICO. Before you can start selling travel services for one of these registered travel agencies, you have to pass the  TICO Education Standards Exam .   When you successfully pass the exam, you’ll be able to work at a TICO registered Ontario travel agency and sell travel services or provide travel advice to the public. STEP 3: Decide where you want to work!

When you’re a Certified Travel Counsellor, you can decide if you want to work from home as a home-based agent or if you would prefer to work in the office of a travel agency.

Speak to several different travel agencies to compare their policies to determine which arrangement is the best fit for you. Ensure that any company you’re considering working for in Ontario is a TICO registered travel agency. To look for one of the 2,000 currently registered travel agencies, use  TICO’s agency search tool .

The benefit of a career in the tourism industry is that you can choose how and where you want to work. Plus, you’ll be able to use your knowledge and experience to book adventures for your clients to travel the world. Questions You Should Know The Answers To…

Prior to creating our New Agent Learning Program we did our homework. From our research, we found there are many differences in what host agencies offer. Here are some key questions you will want to ask when talking to us and to any other host agency.

  • Is marketing included in your fees or is it an extra fee?
  • Do they do the marketing for you and from you or do they create the material and you have to do it?
  • Direct Mail (Canada Post)
  • Targeted E-Marketing
  • E-Newsletters

Referral Program:

  • Do they offer a referral program that compensates friends and family that refer new clients to you?
  • Do they have a referral program that compensates friends or colleagues that refer new customers to you?
  • What is the length of the contract you will be asked to sign? Buyer beware! Some contracts are for 5 year terms and even after 5 years the contract says you are not able to work in the travel industry for 1 more year.
  • Are there many additional fees for marketing, websites, telephone that you should know before making your decision?

Personal Website:

  • Do they offer a personalized bookable website in their fees?
  • Does their website have booking engines that include Hotel, Car, Cruise, Packages, Insurance & Excursions?
  • Are you responsible for updating the content on your site or is it done for you?
  • How is the training delivered? Is it live (via webinar), prerecorded or classroom?
  • What materials will you receive? Will you receive actual textbooks and workbooks from an accredited training institute or is it a binder compiled by the host agency?
  • Does the host agency require you to make your bookings in Sabre or Apollo? While these tools may financially benefit the host agency, it’s not so easy for a new agent. These tools are difficult to learn and consume a significant portion of your scheduled training program.

And the final question, one of the most important questions for you personally:

  • After you start with your host agency, are you supported by a team dedicated exclusively to new agents or by an accessible, experienced agent of that host agency?
