Y ou could fill a dictionary with categories of Welsh rain. But as I queue, waiting to summit Yr Wyddfa ( Snowdon ), the rain is ‘cloaking’ (verb). Shortening of: “It’s coming down like a witch’s cloak.”

Experienced at high altitudes, this grey, mysterious squall of damp wet mist magically appears across mountaintops disguising everything it doesn’t want you to see. It’s like being inside a television stuck on static. Visibility reduces from “wow is that Ireland I can see?” to “when did I get cataracts?” See also: “It’s raining rats and frogs.”

Alighting from the Snowdon Mountain Railway at Clogwyn Station around an hour ago, not even Michael Fish could’ve predicted this. The sun was hanging low in the cold, cloudless sky like a low-watt light bulb. Metres from the platform to the east, the views tumbled off into eternity. The piercing blue waters of Lakes Glaslyn and Llydaw glistened against the craggy haunches holding up the mountain. Beauty and the beast.

Snowdon Mountain Railway was completed in 1896

We have half an hour to explore, take photos, gawp in awe, or do whatever at this isolated outpost. Some make their way back down via the Llanberis Path but most wait for the return journey. The penultimate stop on the line is a mile from the summit but the pandemic has prevented staff from carrying out their maintenance on the 126-year-old line, so trains currently terminate here.

From May 2023, both the Summit station and Hafod Eryri – the peak’s charcoal-grey visitor centre – reopen. Until then, passengers have to complete the final push to the Crown of Cymru on foot. The walk takes around an hour.

I’m the only one from the train to head to the summit. It’s steep from here; like clambering up a skateboarding halfpipe. The walk seems Sisyphean: my body lurches forward, knees near my shoulders, as the metronomic crunch of the gravel underfoot counts my steps like a pedometer. On either side of the path, there are long-reaching vistas across “cwms” (steep-sided valley bowls) and spiky Stegosaurus-spine ridges with soft, crepuscular rays providing a spotlight.

Towards the summit – as my calves start to burn, possibly cauterise – the witch’s cloak appears and darkens everything

Towards the summit – as my calves start to burn, possibly cauterise – the witch’s cloak appears and darkens everything. The heavens open. All that falls out is rain. I stumble and feel my way up, following a line of weary, wet, Gore Tex-wearing walkers. At the trig point, many wait patiently to climb the final uneven steps to make 1,085m (3,560ft).

Early this morning, before the doors of the cream-painted Snowdon Mountain Railway ticket office in Llanberis opened, there was a lot of well-mannered milling about too. Among the hanging baskets of flowers and the smell of strong coffee and fried breakfast emanating from the station cafe, groups of people poked their heads into the small onsite cinema, which was showing dramatic footage of the trains chugging up the mountain.

Inspired by Switzerland’s mountain-climbing trains, the railway was completed in 1896. It took 150 men some 14 months to pickaxe, shovel and blow up the mountainside so they could lay four miles of track to the top. Engineers installed a toothed rack in the middle of the running rails which allowed pinions (cogs) beneath the locomotives to grip on securely. Engines could then push the carriages to the summit without fear of them rolling off. In places, the gradient is as steep as 1 in 5.5.

Picture-perfect views from Snowdon Mountain Railway

“Anyone for the nine o’clock train?” a conductor bellows on the platform. A queue forms and we’re divided into groups by carriage compartment. As it’s the first train of the day, a traditional diesel engine will do 45 minutes of heavy pushing to Clogwyn. Steam locomotives run from 9.30am.

We’re led onto a black cream and burgundy carriage whose blue plastic seats soon fill up. Passengers sit shoulder to shoulder, their coats swishing as they twist for a better view. A whistle shrills and our dark, Knight Rider -coloured engine, Hunslet, eases the carriage forward with the pressure of a paternal palm on the back.

The train rumbles across a brick viaduct, past a mini mountain of black coal used by the railway’s steam locomotives. We cut through some trees, past the gushing Ceunant Mawr waterfall, and out into the wild grassy contours of the Yr Wyddfa foothills. It’s here we get our first glimpse of the summit – it peeps out above a ridge on the right.

Outside, the journey is like an opening movie scene

Outside, the journey is like an opening movie scene. Dry stone walls, grazing sheep and pockets of hikers appear. They then vanish as we trace the track up the spine of the mountain.

As we climb higher, through Rocky Valley, the greenery starts to ebb away; dark rocks replace rosemary rumps. The precipices become more pronounced. Tumbledown farmhouses give way to giant grey cliffs and funnels of fossil-coloured landslides pile up like the ashes of yesterday’s fire.

As the train slows to a halt at Clogwyn Station, it’s like we’ve slid onto the surface of the moon. It’s treeless and washed out. The lunar-like surface is quiet and sparse. The conductor comes along and opens each door individually and we step out onto the platform. I take in the surroundings. You seem to be able to see forever. No wonder some people believe King Arthur is buried up here – the vistas make me feel like God.

Daniel was rewarded with murky views at the summit

Fast-forward to the trig point and it’s clear I’m a mortal. Those queueing in front of me have conquered Wales’ tallest peak under their own steam. A Scottish cad – his wet blonde hair stuck to his forehead like he’s walked out of a hurricane – is joking about “the great views” against a background that resembles an endless boiling cauldron. A damp, yellow labrador sniffs among the shards of rock, his paws brown with mud. Two Geordies drink celebratory cans of Kronenbourg lager having cycled – cycled! – to the top by e-bike.

Then there’s me. A cheater. I’ve Phil-ed and Holly-ed it. No wonder it’s absolute cloaking.

Travel essentials

The Snowdon Mountain Railway runs from 1 April until 31 October (weather permitting). Trains only go as far as Clogwyn Station until 12 May, after which they go to the Summit.

How to book

Either buy in person at the Snowdon Mountain Railway train station in Llanberis or online via snowdon.vticket.co.uk (includes a £3.50 service fee). Note: many trains sell out weeks in advance.

Return journeys to the summit start from £26 for the early-bird diesel service at 9am (£38 thereafter). It costs £50 to ride a heritage steam train. Cheaper one-way tickets (plus walking back down) are available too.

Late-May or late-September; outside of school holidays.

When do the trains run?

Trains are now running to the summit.

The Snowdon Mountain Railway normally runs from Llanberis to the summit of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) between mid-May and the end of October, weather permitting. The spring service, which starts about six weeks earlier than this, sees trains running to Clogwyn (¾ of the way up, and a mile from the summit).  For much of its route the railway is fairly close to the Llanberis Path , which passes under the line in a couple of places.

Trains to and from Clogwyn

When trains run only as far as Clogwyn, sometimes people want to catch the train up to there, then walk the final mile to the summit. This is possible, and you should buy a single ticket to Clogwyn. If you have a return ticket it will be for a return on the same train , something you won’t be able to do if walking to the summit (which takes the best part of an hour each way).

If you want to catch the train down from Clogwyn, you may hit lucky and find a space on a train, but this can’t be relied on, especially in good weather, so you should be prepared, if necessary, to walk all the way back down to Llanberis.

2024 fares:  a single adult ticket (diesel) to/from Clogwyn is £26  (£36 return).

Trains to and from the summit

2024 fares:  a single adult ticket (diesel) to/from the summit is £32  (£42 return).

When trains run to the summit, passengers only have 30 minutes at the summit, then must return on the same train if they have a return ticket. If you are walking up and have planned to meet specific train passengers at the summit, this therefore calls for fairly good timing.

Are dogs allowed on the train?

Only assistance dogs are permitted on the train. The railway’s website states: For the comfort and safety of our passengers and staff, only assistance animals are allowed on our trains. Being a heritage, narrow-gauged railway we are restricted for space inside our carriages.

Can I catch the train down, having walked up?

Yes, it is possible to buy a one-way ticket down, and if you want to do this you should inquire at the ticket office on the platform. However, you should note that trains only run to the summit in the season (mid-May to the end of October), and then only if the wind is not too strong. Even when trains are reaching the summit, there is no guarantee that there will be any spare space on the next train (it’s a single carriage), especially in good weather and peak holiday times.

The railway’s website states: “Single tickets down the mountain cannot be pre-booked and are only available on a standby first come, first served basis from the destination station of the day (Clogwyn or Snowdon Summit). The reason we cannot offer pre-booked tickets to travel down the mountain is because we have no guarantee that our trains will be able to reach their destination. All travel is weather permitting and if the wind speeds on the mountain exceed our operational safety level, our services will be interrupted and  may even be suspended all together. This can happen throughout the year. In addition, any form of technical issue can prevent trains reaching their destination. People who walk up the mountain must also be prepared to walk back down.”

Can I get a single ticket up, then walk down?

Yes. The railway’s website states: “Single tickets for the Traditional Diesel Service can be purchased in advance online or at the Llanberis Ticket Office when available, exclusively for the journey up the mountain.”

Can I buy a return ticket, but walk up and use the return ticket down?

Unfortunately, no. The railway website states: “Due to the unpredictable weather on the mountain we cannot guarantee trains will reach their destination before leaving Llanberis Station. Return tickets are only valid once you have boarded the train in Llanberis 15 minutes before your train leaves.”

(This is primarily for reasons of your safety. The railway does not want to be responsible for picking up pre-booked passengers from the summit when conditions might change and not allow their trains to reach the top, stranding the would-be passengers at the top.)

You can read more about this on the railway’s FAQs page .

Booking for the train

Advance bookings need to be made online. If there are any available tickets on the day, they will be sold from the ticket office in Llanberis from 8.30 a.m.  These often sell out very quickly, so it’s always best to pre-book online to avoid disappointment.

More detail, including times, prices and booking, can be found on the Snowdon Mountain Railway website .

The sale, which is available to book through July 31, is available for travel from now through Sept. 2.

Tickets for Amtrak’s Auto Train are on sale for as little as $75, making it easier to travel up and down the East Coast without the burden of traffic snags.

The sale , which is available to book through July 31, is available for travel from now through Sept. 2, Amtrak shared with Travel + Leisure . Additionally, kids 2 to 12 years old ride free when accompanying an adult on the same reservation.

Tickets for the sale, which is available for both coach and first class private rooms, start at just $75, plus the cost of a vehicle. The sale is valid on travel in both ways between Lorton, Virginia, and Sanford, Florida.

A three-day advance purchase is required. To book, travelers must use the promo code “C521.”

The Auto Train operates nonstop between Virginia and Florida and takes about 17 and a half hours to make the full journey.

Travelers must purchase a ticket as well as pay extra for their vehicle, which can include cars, vans, and motorcycles. The cost of a vehicle varies by the type. Travelers can also purchase priority vehicle offloading with their tickets.

On board, passengers receive a complimentary continental breakfast before arrival in coach, while travelers in private Roomettes or bedrooms are treated to complimentary meals, priority boarding, and a dedicated first class attendant. Each private bedroom features an in-room sink, restroom, and shower.

Last year, Amtrak changed its fare structure , introducing two new fare options of “value” and “flex” and eliminating the previous options of “saver,” “value,” and “flexible” fares. Both of these new fare options are available on the Auto Train.

Beyond the Auto Train, Amtrak is expanding service between St. Paul, MN, and Chicago this summer and planning on bringing back and expanding its popular seasonal Berkshire Flyer train between New York City and the Berkshires.

A New Airline for Dogs Takes Flight

Bark Air made its inaugural flight from New York and Los Angeles this week. But seats are pricey, costing up to $8,000

Sarah Kuta

Daily Correspondent

Golden retriever boarding a small plane on a runway with a woman in front of him

Ask any pet parent, and they’ll tell you the same thing: Traveling with dogs is complicated.

Taking a road trip is one option, but driving can add hours or even days to the journey. And flying, while faster, presents its own set of challenges.

When it comes to pets who aren’t service animals, most commercial airlines only allow small dogs—typically, those weighing up to 20 pounds—to accompany their human owners in the aircraft’s cabin. And, even then, these companies require owners to keep their pup in a pet carrier that must be stowed under the seat in front of them for the entire flight. Larger dogs are relegated to the cargo hold beneath the plane—a terrifying and potentially dangerous experience.

Now, a new “ dog-first” airline aims to relieve all that stress. Bark Air , an airline created by the pet company Bark , took its inaugural flight on Thursday, transporting a sold-out plane full of pups and their human companions from New York to Los Angeles.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by BARK Air (@barkair)

“Right now, at an altitude of 30,000 feet, there is a flight filled with dogs,” the company wrote on Instagram . “Unlike any flight before it, these dogs are not merely an afterthought, nor are they treated as cargo or a burden to the crew and fellow travelers. Here, dogs are the foremost priority.”

To deliver its “white paw” service, the company is partnering with Talon Air , a private jet charter company that flies Gulfstream G500 jets.

Before takeoff, dogs can snack on treats and wear noise-canceling earmuffs and calming jackets to ensure they have a stress-free flight. Once in the air, flight attendants serve dogs their beverage of choice to help with any ear discomfort as the plane ascends and descends. Pups can choose whether to socialize with other dogs or stick close to their human.

“We think dogs should be right next to you on the seat, getting the same or—in our case—even better treatment and experiences than people do,” Dave Stangle, Bark’s vice president of brand marketing, tells the Points Guy ’s Harriet Baskas.

The flights aren’t cheap: It costs $6,000 for a dog and its human to book a one-way flight from New York to Los Angeles, or $8,000 for a ticket from New York to London.

The company’s executives acknowledged that the prices are “cost-prohibitive for most families,” but said they expect the flights to get cheaper as demand increases, CBS News ’ Megan Cerullo reports.

“Televisions, telephones, VCRs and DVD players, to automobiles, train and boat travel, and, yes, even human air travel—all of these started with very high prices until demand was proven and the costs could be brought lower by serving the masses,” wrote Matt Meeker, Bark’s chief executive officer and co-founder, in a May letter quoted by CBS News.

United States airlines transported 188,223 animals in 2022, the most recent year with available data from the Department of Transportation . Of those, seven animals died, one was injured and one was lost, resulting in an incident rate of 0.48 per 10,000. That’s similar to the prepandemic rate of 0.47 incidents per 10,000 animals in 2019, when U.S. airlines transported 404,556 animals.

Though the overall rate is low, airline incidents involving pets often make headlines . Even when flights go smoothly, many dogs experience discomfort and anxiety while flying in the cargo hold. To illustrate this point, Meeker volunteered to ride inside a crate in the cargo hold of a plane on a nearly four-hour flight from south Florida to New York City.

“I don’t know why any person would ever choose to do this to their dog,” Meeker said in a video posted on Instagram . “It’s an absolute horror show back here. There has to be a better way.”

Bark is not the first company to offer dog-friendly flights. K9 Jets , which launched in 2022 , offers pay-per-seat private jet service for dogs and their owners. The company flies to Dubai, Dublin, Florida, Frankfurt, Hawaii, Lisbon, London, Los Angeles, Milan, New Jersey and Paris. It can also accommodate cats, though it requires them to stay inside a carrier for the entire flight.

Some private jet companies, including NetJets and VistaJet, also cater to pets on flights. VistaJet , for example, serves “prime cuts of fresh meat and fish” upon request.

“I just don’t understand why the airlines don’t recognize the business opportunity,” Rusty Rueff, who has a French bulldog named Theo, told the New York Times ’ Christine Chung last year. “We’ll do anything for our pets, just like we’ll do anything for our children.”
