Arsenal learn Premier League title points tally reality as Man City gap clear ahead of Tottenham

Arsenal's draw with Brighton has sparked a lull in the mood around the club as Mikel Arteta provided points tally perspective on the title race

The mood is low among Arsenal fans and it is not a surprise. The international break often saps the energy from club supporters but it is made far worse by the dropping of points before it happens and the draw with Brighton was made worse by the sense of injustice relating to the manner of the result.

Declan Rice’s red card was the primary reason why Arsenal dropped their first points of the season . Granted, they could have won it through both Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka’s chances which were created by the change in approach after conceding the equaliser but few could argue Arsenal were not on the way to a relatively comfortable win prior to the awful decision of Chris Kavanagh.

Yet the apathy which has spread around for many combined with the injury to Mikel Merino which worsened the feeling further is to some degree a bit of a surprise. Arsenal managed to turn around one of their biggest disappointments at Aston Villa just two games into the season and secured two deadline day deals on top of more than £100million in the form of player sales, add-on activations and sell-on bonuses.

Five players have come in compared to Man City’s two and Liverpool’s one. That draw with Brighton has been huge and perhaps it is good to get an idea of the reality of where Arsenal were last season and what dropped points cost them in the race.

The Gunners finished just two points off Manchester City. In the final half of the campaign, Arsenal dropped 17 points, but in the second half of the season, they dropped just eight.

A stark difference and a clear warning of where Mikel Arteta needs to gain the points this season while remaining consistent in the successes of the previous. A December run which saw 11 of the 25 total points dropped is one area that will be focused on.

It began last, like this season, with a home draw, that stole the first points. Yet, unlike the Brighton game, the draw with Fulham was entirely self-inflicted with mistakes at the back being the key.

This would repeat against Tottenham a month later when Jorginho surrendered possession in his own half to gift their bitter north London rivals an equaliser. Two more were dropped at Chelsea and then the first defeat of the season which incensed Arteta at Newcastle United before that winter lull that included a loss away at Villa, a draw at Anfield, a damaging 2-0 home defeat to West Ham which was followed up by a drab 2-1 loss at Fulham.

Only five points were dropped in the New Year with an impressive clean sheet draw at Manchester City but then the defeat to Villa at the Emirates Stadium ultimately proved to be terminal to the club’s title hopes. What all these games provide is a comparison for fans.

Games against Tottenham and Man City are up next in a very challenging opening run of the new season. Yet these should also be seen as an opportunity to put a flag in the sand for the Gunners and showcase their competitivity in the title and should a win in both occur, without question, the mood will be transformed – yet that is one massive ask.

Man United transfer news LIVE £68m Eze green light plus Casemiro 'U-turn' and Antony latest

Manchester united transfer news and updates from around the club with the latest on eberechi eze, antony and casemiro..

  • Updated 22:59, 9 SEP 2024

England international and Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze

Manchester United winger Antony is being linked with transfer interest from Newcastle amid his struggles at Old Trafford.

The attacker has underwhelmed his £85million price tag since his 2022 arrival, registering just 16 goal contributions in 83 matches. Speculative claims have emerged stating that United would be willing to cut their losses on the Brazilian should Newcastle make an approach.

Meanwhile, Galatasaray are reportedly switching their transfer attention away from Casemiro . The midfielder is said to be adamant on staying at Old Trafford to prove critics wrong after his woeful outing against Liverpool before the international break.

And while deadline day has long passed, United are continuing to be linked with Adrien Rabiot , who remains a free agent having left Juventus at the end of the last season. And MEN Sport understands that United are keeping tabs on Eberechi Eze .

Next Man United fixtures

With domestic football on the way back, it's back to Premier League matters for United, here is what lays ahead of them over the rest of September:

  • Southampton (A) Saturday 14September 14 (12:30 kick-off)
  • Barnsley (H) Tuesday 17 September (8pm kick-off) - Carabao Cup
  • Crystal Palace (A) Saturday 21 September (5:30pm kick-off)
  • FC Twente (H) Wednesday 25 September (8pm kick-off)
  • Tottenham (H) Sunday 29 September (4:30pm kick-off)

Sancho sent clear Chelsea warning

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has warned loanee Jadon Sancho that he could struggle to get in the team at Stamford Bridge this season.

Sancho completed a deadline day loan move from United to Chelsea at the end of last month after falling out of favour at Old Trafford. But he has been warned that he could also find his game time limited at Chelsea.

Cole told Betfred :

"Manchester United paid over £70million for Jadon three years ago, so it’s a lot of money lost isn’t it? "Jadon’s a very talented kid and he’s still only 24 years old, so if Chelsea can get the best out of him, like Borussia Dortmund did last season, then it would be a steal. "There’s so much talent and so much unlocked potential there, so if Chelsea can unlock it and get him to the peak of his powers, then it would ultimately be a very, very good deal for them. "However, you can flip it on its head and ask where he's going to play? "Unless football becomes 24-a-side, he’s going to struggle like everybody else is at Chelsea because nobody knows what’s going on there. "They’ve got loads of big names but they can only choose 11 players to start, so it will be interesting to see how he does at Chelsea."

Hojlund injury delay

Manchester United are being cautious over rushing Rasmus Hojlund back from injury, according to ESPN .

The striker suffered a hamstring injury in the first game of pre-season on July 28 and was originally given a rehabilitation time of around six weeks, meaning that he could make a return vs Southampton after the international break.

However, the report claims that Hojlund will be assessed this week, but will be eased back into action gently with United keen to avoid a repeat of last season's injury problems.

United showed 'interest' in Tottenham man

Manchester United were one of three clubs to show an interest in Tottenham's Cristian Romero this summer, but were knocked back by the club who insisted that they were not going to sell.

That is according to Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, who has shared the update on X (formerly Twitter).

The post translates to: "Cristian Romero has the interest of three teams in this transfer market: Manchester United, PSG and Real Madrid.

"Tottenham responded that they would not sell him. He is essential for Postecoglou. They did not even put a price on him.

"He will have offers again in the next transfer market when Romero only has two years left on his contract."

Antony transfer stance clear

Manchester United winger Antony is reportedly determined to fight for his place at Old Trafford and has rejected transfers elsewhere which could have offered more playing time.

In Erik ten Hag's first summer at United . he pushed hard to bring the Brazilian winger to the Theatre of Dreams. After losing Lisandro Martinez to the Reds earlier in the window, Ajax were reluctant to let another star man leave.

However, Antony pushed through a move to the Premier League and an agreement was later reached for his £86m transfer to the top flight. The forward started impressively at Old Trafford but soon lost his way and has failed to show any consistency that his price tag demands.

Three-man shortlist revealed

Fulham's Antonee Robinson, Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez and Brest's Bradley Locko are on a shortlist of potential targets for Manchester United in January as they search for competition for Luke Shaw.

GIVEMESPORT name the trio as potential targets with a new left back said to be a 'top priority' for Erik ten Hag.

The report adds that United are becoming 'frustrated' with Shaw's injury absences, and will therefore turn to the transfer market in the winter.

Casemiro sent United challenge

Former Manchester United man Nicky Butt has challeneged Casemiro to prove his doubters wrong with the midfielder looking likley to stay at the club this season.

The Brazilian has been criticised for his performance against Liverpool, where he was taken off at half time. He has since been linked with a move to Turkey.

But Butt has said that the criticism has been harsh.

“He’s an unbelievable footballer,” he told the Manchester Evening News following Saturday's legends match. “He’s won everything there is to win in the game. I think [the criticism] is a bit unfair. He’s had one horrendous half and everyone is turning against him. “I think it’s a bit harsh, he knows what he is doing. He’s won more things than I ever did so I wouldn’t sit here and say he’s this, that and the other. But he did have a bad game, I’m sure he’s had a few before, we all have.” He added: “He’s not as old as people talk about, he’s 32. He’s going to have to come back and prove people wrong. "And that’s the good thing about football, people will doubt you and have a go at you - I had it in my career - and you can come back and keep them quiet.”

United given Eze green light

More quotes from Steve Parish's interview woth Sky Sports suggests that the club may be open to selling their stars, including Eze in the future.

"We're proud of the fact that Michael Olise's gone to Bayern Munich," said Parish. "We want to be selling to the top clubs, or to clubs like Newcastle who've got great aspirations and have recently been in the Champions League. "So we have to manage all of those things. We won't get really great young talent to come to us if they think they're going to be stuck." He added: "We want to be playing in the Champions League. The reality is we don't right now. That's what players want to achieve in their career and we respect that and we respect the fact that sometimes we're going to be a pathway to that."

A good omen?

Again, looking ahead to the weekend's clash against the Saints, where United will be looking to bounce back from the defeat against Liverpool.

History is on United's side for the game. The last visit to St Mary's saw Bruno Fenandes score the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win back in August 2022.

Palace chief admits Eze shock

Crystal Palace chairman has admitted that he was shocked not to receive more interest for Eberechi Eze this summer.

United are monitoring the Palace man ahead of the January transfer window, with him imporessing for the Eagles so far this season.

Palace saw off interest for defender marc Guehi, but did sell Michael Olse to Bayern Munich in the summer window. Chairman Parish has now admitted that he was expecting more interest in Eze.

"I was really worried from a club point of view of losing Michael and Ebbs in the same window and we didn't have in Ebbs the interest that I thought we would have," Parish told Sky Sports News. "I was astounded. Genuinely astounded. I mean, the guy's just an outstanding footballer, an outstanding person."

Midfielder 'very high' on wishlist

Coratian international midfielder Martin Baturina is 'very high' on Manchester United's transfer wish list for the January window, according to reports in Croatia.

Germanijak report that United scouts have been following the player for a long time and plan to watch him more closely over the following months.

The layer almost completed a summer move from Dinamo Zagreb to Fiorentina in the summer, but the two clubs couldn't agree a fee.

Who is Juanlu Sanchez?

Juanlu Sánchez has reportedly emerged as a target for Manchester United as Erik ten Hag attempts to bolster his options at the back. The 21-year-old defender has suddenly been linked with a switch to Old Trafford following his impressive performances for Spain at the Olympic Games this summer .

He helped La Roja win a gold medal in Paris, France, defeating the hosts 5-3 after extra-time in the final. Then, over the opening weekend of the new La Liga season, Sánchez scored in Sevilla's 2-2 draw against Las Palmas .

Find more about the young defender here.

United sent Rasmus Hojlund message

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has suggested that the team are not playing to Rasmus Hojlund's strengths to help get the best out of the striker, but has predicted big things for the United man.

The forward has been prevented from making an appearance so far this season due to injury, but will look to be back in and amongst the goals when he is fit. Schmeichel has predicted that he has a big future.

He told Danish outlet TipsBladet :

“He is a fantastic talent. The possibilities that lie within him are at the highest level. “Now Ruud van Nistelrooy came in and I spoke to him briefly. He says there is so much potential in this. If he can help him…” “It’s not just Rasmus! The team is not playing him right, so there are some things that need to be corrected.” “He is a very impressive young person. He is far older than the 21 years he is. He has a great perspective. He is very sensible and cheeky – all the things you want in a young striker. “He has shown that if he is being pressured, he can do it himself. If he can get the team to back him up, I can’t see that he won’t just score a lot of goals.”

Not too much longer to wait

We are into the second week of the international break, which means domestic football is almost back!

United are back in action on Saturday as they take on Southampton in the early kick-off (12.30pm). The Saints have not enjoyed their time back in the Premier League so far, having lost all three of their league games, here's a look at how they've fared so far this season:

Newcastle United 1-0 Southampton

Southampton 0-1 Nottingham Forest

(EFL Cup) Cardiff City 3-5 Southampton

Brentford 3-1 Southampton

Club in 'pole position' to sign Antony

Despite previous comments from his agent, latest reports suggest that Antony is 'pushing' for a loan move away from United.

The Sun report that Jose Mourinh's Fenerbahce are in 'pole position' to sign the winger on loan, although they do face competition from Ajax as well as clubs in Spain, France and Saudi Arabia.

The Turkish transfer window remaining open does keep the possibility of the Brazilian playing his football away from Old Trafford this season as he looks to revitalise his career.

Rabiot talks 'held'

Bosses at Man United are set to hold talks with Adrien Rabiot and his entourage about a potential move to Old Trafford.

The ex-Juventus star has been linked with a move to United for some time. The Daily Star has claimed that Erik ten Hag is hoping to strengthen his midfield, with Rabiot available on a free transfer.

Casemiro transfer decision

A late exit from Manchester United for Casemiro has been all but ruled-out following reports that Turkish giants Galatasaray were targeting a move for Arsenal midfielder Jorginho.

Gala were reportedly seeking reinforcements in the transfer market before Friday's deadline. The transfer window in England closing over a week ago, some clubs in Europe are still able to sign players.

Casemiro rejected a move to Turkey in favour of fighting for his place in Erik ten Hag's squad. Now, it looks as though they are turning their attention to Jorginho.

According to Sunday's Sun , Okan Buruk's side want to bring the Italian to the club after he was an unused substitute in the Gunners' first three games of the season. He has just one year on his contract at Arsenal.

Why Erik ten Hag has to change

Sir Alex Ferguson once told Mauricio Pochettino, "You play two games each matchday. The first is in the press. Never lose it."

Erik ten Hag did not lose it in the Old Trafford press conference room eight days ago. He told a journalist, "I feel sorry for you." The one everyone pitied was Ten Hag.

For the best part of a year now, Ten Hag has sounded as occasionally delusional as his compatriot Louis van Gaal did during his final months at Manchester United.

Rangnick: I was right about United

Former caretaker boss Ralf Rangnick says he believes he was right in his assessment of United when he said the club needed "open-heart surgery".

The Austria head coach was asked about these comments he made in 2022 while speaking to TV2 during this international break.

He said, as per The Metro :

"I probably made that statement when the season was almost over about two years ago. It is probably only two or three weeks since Erik ten Hag was asked the same thing. "Then he said that I was right in my analysis. I don’t know how many players they have signed since, but it looks like I was right.’"

Update on Old Trafford plans

Manchester United have entered into a partnership with Trafford Council and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority amid the plans to rejuvenate the Trafford Wharfside area.

Earlier this year, a new task force including key civic and sporting figures was set-up with the vision of regenerating the surrounding community within plans for a new and enhanced Old Trafford.

World Athletics chief Lord Sebsatian Coe, who led the staging of the 2012 London Olympics, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and former United captain Gary Neville are some of the names involved with the task force.

“Greater Manchester has a strong claim to be the biggest footballing city-region on the planet," Burnham said. "The future of Old Trafford is the next chapter of that story, and we have a chance now to make sure it’s written properly."

Lord Coe added: "The objective of this once-in-a-generation project is not only the development of a world-class stadium for the north of England, but also to ensure that this brings broad social and economic benefits to the local area and surrounding region."

United have been told what they want to hear about Eze

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has said Eberechi Eze would be "a gift to any football club" amid Manchester United's interest in his signature.

The Manchester Evening News understands Eze is of interest to United ahead of next summer's transfer window.

The recruitment of a winger is expected to be a leading objective for the club ahead of the 2025/26 season.

United still have tabs on Branthwaite

Meanwhile, United are expected to keep track of Jarrad Branthwaite , having seen two bids fall short in the summer.

The improved, second bid was worth £50million but was still £20m under what Everton wanted for their star defender.

Branthwaite does not see his Toffees contract expire until 2027. With United after a defender within the next two windows, Everton could see another offer arrive from Old Trafford.

Eze release clause

MEN Sport further understands that Eze has a £68m release clause in his Crystal Palace contract that can be triggered next year.

Eze - who already has two goals in four appearances this season - was chosen to represent England at this summer's European Championships after notching 11 goals and six assists in 31 matches last season.

United are set to hunt for a midfielder and defender, as well as a winger, in the forthcoming 12 months.

United monitoring Eze

Manchester United's provisional plan is to sign a defender, a midfielder and a winger next summer, with Eberechi Eze of interest.

Crystal Palace talisman Eze, 26, is among the forwards United are monitoring ahead of a probable reinforcement on the flanks next year. Eze remained at Palace after the club sold fellow winger Michael Olise to Bayern Munich for £50million.

Eze, contracted at Palce until 2027, has a release clause of £68m that can be reactivated next year.

United handed David blow

Striker Jonathan David says he is in talks with Lille over a contract extension, after a summer of heavy transfer speculation led to no move.

United had been linked with the forward, who finished as last season's second-highest scorer behind Kylian Mbappe. These connections died down once Joshua Zirkzee's arrival was confirmed, though.

Rabiot 'update'

United continue to be linked with free agent Adrien Rabiot, whom they nearly signed in 2022.

Despite deadline day passing more than a week ago, United are still able to hire those who are without employement.

And now, reports from Italy suggest that Rabiot is ruling out one destination, with the player supposedly balking at the idea of moving to Saudi Arabia amid a desire for a place at a club in a top European league.

Similar to Turkey, Adrien Rabiot has also currently no plans to accept any proposal from Saudi Pro League. His priority and desire remain European top 5 leagues. pic.twitter.com/q2zVyDXxqM — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) September 8, 2024

Transfer chase for Casemiro 'grows cold'

A report from The Sun says Galatasaray are pivoting away from a potential transfer approach for Casemiro and are now instead setting sights on a Premier League rival.

It's being mooted that Jorginho of Arsenal is of interest, but the Gunners are set to rebuff any bid with the club currently stretched for midfield options.

Meanwhile, Casemiro is said to have underlined his desire to stay at Old Trafford and prove critics wrong after a dismal performance against Liverpool led him to being taken off at half-time.

De Ligt furious at mistakes

Matthijs De Ligt has lambasted himself for being out of position for Bosnia & Herzegovina's two goals in their 5-2 defeat to the Netherlands on Saturday.

The United summer signing admitted to his mistakes after full-time., telling NOS : "I should have done better at their second goal, and I know that. I don't really know what happened.

"I should have cleared the ball but I kept having doubts during the play. It's just f****d. Is this game is a missed opportunity for me? I don't know, I just try to do my best."

United conceded the late winner to Brighton after De Ligt was substituted on for the final knockings of the match before the Dutchman shipped three goals against Liverpool before the international break.

United 'interested' in Sevilla defender

Manchester United are reportedly admirers of Sevilla defender Juanlu Sanchez and have submitted an enquiry about the 21-year-old right-back.

The youngster is a versatile asset, being able to play in midfield and also as a winger. Sanchez was a notabe figure in Spain's men's Olympic gold medal triumph in Paris this summer, reputedly catching the eye of United.

ABC Sevilla says that while no offer came in for Sanchez over the summer, the club remain firmly interested in him. It has been mooted that he has a release cluse of around £21million.

curly hair decorated with flowers

If you’re looking for a change to your everyday look, why not consider getting a perm? A perm is a great way to give yourself that extra boost in both confidence and style. From small, tight curls to long beach waves, there are many types of perms you can choose from.

What is a perm?

Before anything else, it’s important to understand what a perm is. A perm, short for “permanent wave,” is a kind of hair treatment that makes your hair curly. It uses chemicals that change the structure of your hair by breaking the hair’s natural bonds. In other words, these chemicals will alter your straight hair and turn them into curls.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that people with naturally curly hair can’t get perms too. In fact, some types of perms are better suited for those with naturally curly hair. This is because, over the years, hairstylists have come up with various perming methods and tools to accommodate as many styles as possible. However, it wasn’t always like this.

History of Perms

In the past, it wasn’t as easy to get a perm as it is today. It wasn’t as safe either.

In 1872, Marcel Grateau invented the first perming tool and method. He made a special pair of tongs , which had one arm with a circular cross-section and another arm with a concave section. Upon closing the tongs, the circular cross-section would fit perfectly inside the concave area.

Grateau would heat the tongs and clamp a lock of hair between the tongs. Pulling the tongs from the hair after some time would leave curls in the hair. This procedure’s biggest risk was burning the scalp with the tongs. This method, however, gave way to the development of modern curling techniques such as curling irons.

In the 1900s, another method of perming emerged. German hairdresser Karl Nessler invented a process he called the “spiral heat method”. Nessler applied sodium hydroxide onto the hair and heated it to a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius or more. Then, he wrapped locks of hair around brass rollers, which he attached to counterweights. The entire process would take six hours to complete, and Nessler’s first few tries ended up burning his wife’s hair off.

By the 1950s, hairstylists began experimenting with other tools. Some used toothpicks to make tight curls, and soon enough, they used acids for longer-lasting curls. A lot of burnt hair and scalps later, perming has now become much easier and safer for both the hairstylist and the customer.

Different Methods to Perm Hair

Today, there are two main methods of perming hair. These are the hot and cold perms. Their biggest difference is what type of solution or chemical the hairstylist uses for perming.

methods of perming hair

Hot perms use acidic chemicals. These are chemicals with pH levels like pure, unfiltered water , specifically 4.5 to 7.0. To activate the chemicals and style the curls, the hairstylist applies heat to the client’s hair.

Hot perms are the best option for those who have thinner hair. Hot perms also give looser and softer curls, so if that is the permed look you’re going for, then consider asking your stylist about their hot perms.

Some types of perms that fall under this category are straight and digital perms.

The other method for perming is the cold perm. Unlike hot perms, cold perms use alkaline formulas instead. The pH levels for these chemicals range from 8.2 to 9.6.

For cold perms, the hairstylist applies the chemical to the client’s dry hair after curling it around plastic rods. The alkaline solution will break down the hair’s bonds, which alter the structure of the hair. This method results in tighter curls with more volume.

Some types of perms that fall under this category are the root and spiral perms.

Different Types of Perms

Whether you are looking for types of perms for women or men or types of perms for short or long hair , you are in the right place. This list compiles the different types of perms for everybody!

Beach Wave Perm

If you’re looking for types of perms for long hair, then one popular choice is the beach wave perm. The beach wave perm replicates curls that look like the client just finished swimming at the beach. Some people also call this perm “soft waves perm” because of how the curls look soft and loose.

To achieve this look, the hairstylist wraps the hair loosely around large rollers. A beach wave perm won’t give you as much volume as other types of perm, but it will give you a little boost.

Furthermore, a beach wave perm lasts for around four months. This can be a great option for those who don’t want to be stuck with a perm for too long.

Body Wave Perm

Some believe the beach wave perm and body wave perm are the same. However, these are two different types of perms. A body wave perm produces tighter and more defined curls. Meanwhile, a beach wave perm produces looser waves.

Similar to the beach waves perm, the body wave perm uses large rollers or rods. However, the stylist wraps the hair around the rods tighter than how they would in a beach wave perm. This is how the body wave perm produces tighter and rounder curls.

The body wave perm is great for those with thin hair. It adds a lot of volume to your hair, which can make your hair look thick and luscious. The curls from a body wave perm also require less maintenance, so this is great for those who want to lessen the time it takes for them to get ready.

Ceramic Perm

One of the most popular types of perms for guys is ceramic perm. A ceramic perm produces the perfect S-shaped curl. To achieve this, a hairstylist uses several ceramic curlers and high heat.

Unfortunately, if you have short hair , a ceramic perm is out of the choices. A ceramic perm requires around 7 to 9 inches of hair length to work with. Otherwise, the curls won’t take shape properly. Ceramic curlers can also withstand greater heat, so this perm type can be more damaging. Be sure to avail the services of a hairstylist who has some experience with this technique.

Since ceramic perms use higher temperatures, the curls also last longer than other perms. If you’re looking for a heavy look that will last on your long hair, then the ceramic perm is a great choice!

Digital Perm

Types of Perms: Digital Perm

Next on this list is Japan ’s famous technique: the digital perm. A digital perm is great for those with thin, straight hair. It gives you natural-looking curls without sacrificing volume. It also doesn’t require long hair, so a short hair perm is possible.

To achieve this, your hairstylist will use hot perm chemicals and a digital heating device. A digital perm session takes up to four hours, so you’ll want to clear up your schedule for the rest of the day.

Digital permed curls will last for at least six months. With proper care, however, digital perms can last up to a year. If you want to get the most out of your money from a single session, then perhaps a digital perm is for you!

Korean Perm

As the name suggests, a Korean perm is popular with K-pop and K-drama fans worldwide. A Korean perm imitates the popular hairstyles that Korean celebrities and idols wear on TV.

While a Korean perm is still achieved through perming, many consider it to be a hairstyle instead of an actual perm. This is because the process of a Korean perm is like a digital perm. A hairstylist will use the same chemicals and tools in a digital perm, but they will style it to imitate the hair of Korean celebrities.

This added styling process sets it apart from other types of perms. Furthermore, since a Korean perm refers to a specific permed look, many salons now offer a separate service for Korean perms.

Multi-Textured Perm

One of the most popular types of perms is the multi-textured perm. A multi-textured perm refers to a curly permed look with both loose curls and tight curls. The different textures of the curls create a natural-looking style.

To achieve this look, a hairstylist uses rods or rollers of different sizes. For instance, a hairstylist can use large rollers and small rollers to achieve a look with both large and small curls. Furthermore, the hairstylist can also adjust how tight the curls are by how tight they wrap the hair around the curlers.

If you’re torn between loose perms and tight, curly perms, then the multi-textured perm is for you. Keep in mind that a multi-textured perm can look messy if an inexperienced professional does it, so be sure to find a stylist who can give you the look you want!

Partial Perm

Types of Perms: Partial Perm

For types of perms that don’t require perming the entire length, one option is the partial perm.

A partial perm focuses on the lower half of your hair. Because of this, partial perms only work on medium to long hair. To achieve a partial perm, hairstylists typically use large rollers on the ends of your hair. The resulting look will give you loose curls that frame your face and add volume to the ends of your hair.

Since a partial perm only focuses on the ends, it won’t give the rest of your hair much volume. However, it gives your straight hair some movement. This is a great option for those who already have thick hair but still want some curls.

Pin Curl Perm

Some types of perms won’t last long. The pin curl perm is one of them. This perm type goes away after one wash in the shower, making it perfect for parties, graduation ceremonies, and other events.

For a pin curl perm, you can choose what size of rollers you want. If you want a loose perm, then you can request a large roller. What makes a pin curl perm different from other perms is it uses hair gel in place of chemicals.

The hairstylist will wrap locks of hair around the rollers and leave them for around two hours. To set the curls, the hairstylist applies hair gel. You can also make the curls last longer by applying hair gel again, but it will still wash off easily in the shower.

Spiral Perm

One of the classic perm looks is the spiral perm. The spiral perm produces bouncy curls that look like springs. If you pull back a lock of hair, this curly perm will bounce back once you release them.

The spiral perm can also produce a loose, wavy perm, but most clients get this perm for the tight corkscrew look. To make the most of a spiral perm, hairstylists recommend a hair length of at least 8 inches. That way, the shape of the curls can really take form.

Spiral perm curls can last up to six months, but it requires a lot of maintenance. The curls can lose shape or turn frizzy, so styling products are a must if you want to keep your springy curls uniform and neat.

Types of Perms: Spot Perm

People often confuse spot perms with partial perms or vice versa. However, these are two very different types of perms. While spot perms can also focus on the ends of your hair, it has a different purpose.

Spot perms are often used to cover thin spots or even out a client’s existing curls. If you have natural curls on one side of your head but loose waves on the other, you can opt for a spot perm. On the other hand, a partial perm is restricted to only the lower half of your hair.

A hairstylist can use chemicals to first relax some sections of your hair and then curl it. Since a spot perm is specific to your own hair’s condition, a thorough consultation with your stylist is a must. It can also be pricier than other perms, depending on the spots that need fixing.

A stack perm is a variation of the partial perm. However, this perm goes higher. This type of perm leaves your roots alone while focusing on the middle and lower sections of your hair.

The hairstylist perms the hair while leaving the roots untouched or straightening them out for sleek and smooth roots. This adds volume to the lengths, which can make the top of your head look flat. This is a popular look that mimics the hair trends from the ‘70s.

A stack perm usually lasts around four to five months, even with little maintenance. However, regular deep conditioning treatments can make your stack perm look shinier and softer.

Straight Perm

When you hear “straight perm”, you might think it’s contradictory to the whole purpose of perming. However, it is just as the name suggests. The straight perm stands out from the other types of perms as they remove curls instead of creating them.

This hair technique originates from Japan, where they use chemicals different from those used in rebonding or relaxing methods. The hairstylist uses strong alkaline chemicals to break the bonds in your hair. This restructures the curly hair into a straight style. Because of this, some people call the straight perm the “reverse perm”.

Unfortunately, a straight perm is short-lived. It will only last up to four to six weeks, and that is with proper hair maintenance. Styling your hair with heat using hair straighteners can make its longevity even shorter.

Types of Perms: Root Perm

In contrast to the stack perm, the root perm focuses on the roots of your hair. This might sound underwhelming, but most hairstylists believe that a root perm is the best method to achieve more hair volume.

Root perms are also great for those who want to retouch their existing perms and add more volume. Since it only focuses on your roots, root perms will help match flattened roots to the lengths of your hair.

Root perms require very little maintenance. However, they live shorter than most types of perms, usually around one month.

Volumizing Perm

If you’re looking for the cheaper types of perms, then the volumizing perm is one that many hairstylists recommend. A volumizing perm gives your hair great volume by combining loose curls and waves.

To achieve this, the hairstylist uses curling rods of different sizes. Before applying the neutralizer, the hairstylist removes the rods. Doing so creates more volume, and the curls come out looser and more relaxed.

Volumizing perms are great for all hair lengths. They are also great for those with fine or flat hair. However, volumizing perms won’t look great on naturally curly hair. Another disadvantage of volumizing perms is its short longevity. While it is usually cheap, it requires a lot of touch-ups as it only lasts for around six weeks.

Pros and Cons of Getting a Perm

Now that you know the different types of perms available in the market, to make sure you’re making the right choice, it’s always a good idea to list down the pros and cons of getting a perm.

The Pros of Getting a Perm

A perm is a great way to try something new. There are only so many haircuts you can try before you end up looking for another way to style your hair. Getting a perm can certainly give you a fresh look that even you will take some time getting used to!

Getting a perm can give you a big confidence boost! Looking good is one way to feel good. Having the same beach waves and red carpet hairstyles that your favorite celebrities have is sure to add that extra spring to your step.

Hair Styling Products

A perm can help you save on time and energy in the mornings. Instead of waking up early in the mornings, you can use that extra hour to sleep in if you have permed hair. You don’t have to dry, curl, and style your hair every morning because your permed hair already gives you that curled look!

Permed hair can attract more people’s attention. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be noticed more, and permed hair can easily help you with that. Curls give your hair more volume, and more volume means bigger hair. The bigger the hair, the easier it is to spot!

The Cons of Getting a Perm

Perms aren’t permanent. Even if the word, “perm”, comes from “permanent”, the curls don’t actually last forever. Most types of perms only hang on for three to six months. Your perm’s longevity will depend on various factors, such as your hair’s health, thickness, and length. The hair products you use can also affect how long your curls stay intact.

Permed hair can be high maintenance at first. Freshly permed hair comes with a lot of rules. For instance, you cannot wash your hair for at least two days. Since perms use chemicals, newly permed hair will often have a strong, foul smell. This smell can also stick to your pillowcases, towels , and hats, so prepare yourself for this when you get a perm.

Hair Salon

Some salons offer expensive services. Aside from the products, salons will charge you for the hairstylist’s knowledge and labor. There are DIY kits that you can purchase online, but these can burn off your hair and scalp if you lack experience. Because of the risks, it is much better to save up for a professional’s service. While it might be pricier than DIY or at-home perming kits, it’s also a lot safer.

Perms can damage your hair. Last, even if a professional does your perm, this doesn’t mean your hair is completely safe from damage. Since the perming process uses harsh chemicals, it is only natural for permed hair to be damaged. A hairstylist, however, can both minimize the risks and lessen the damage.

‘Joga Bonito’, winning mentality key to success, says Meridian football coach Fabio da Silva

tours around tottenham football club

SINGAPORE – For close to two decades, Fabio da Silva’s Brazilian roots have shaped his football coaching methods.

That includes the “joga bonito” mantra (Portuguese for play beautifully) as he provides his young players the freedom to express themselves up front while instilling a winning mentality in them.

Those are key traits of teams under the tutelage of da Silva, who has won a total of 16 National School Games (NSG) titles – nine in the A Division with Meridian Junior College (MJC) and seven in the B and C Divisions with Meridian Secondary School.

Pointing to the likes of Ronaldinho and Neymar as examples of players with flair, the 50-year-old said: “Everyone in the team knows his role. But when it comes to the midfielders and strikers, it’s important for them to use their own ability and skills to take their opponents on one versus one and also to finish the chance.

“These players have not just the ability, but also the confidence to break the lines. Just like in Brazil, where they give freedom to such players, it’s also important for me to do the same for my players.”

Besides these qualities, his players are also required to adopt a winning mindset.

The former Police FC (the precursor to privatised Singapore Premier League side Lion City Sailors) and Jurong FC player added: “Of course, in school we always imply that when you lose, you also learn and say, ‘let’s move forward’.

“But the winning mentality is very important to make them better players and also better people. So that’s why we always say, ‘look, we’re going to start at this level, but we all work to win’.

“If we happen to lose along the way, we all work to be stronger and stronger again in order to succeed. My mentality when I was playing was always to win, so I bring this into my coaching style.”

Former player Ali Manaf, who worked with da Silva from 2016 to 2021 and played for BG Tampines Rovers’ Under-21 team in 2023, attested to that.

The 19-year-old winger said: “The way he pushes me every time to be at my best and play my way is something you’ll never see from other coaches.

“I played freely under him, which influenced me to express myself on the pitch. This mindset of mine really went along when playing with other clubs and people.”

Hougang United midfielder Justin Hui added that the winning mentality was vital to their triumphs. The 26-year-old, who captained the title-winning MJC side in 2017, said: “Every player had to have this mentality. The players were just so hungry to win and the goals were very clear. Even a draw felt like a loss to us.

“I still don’t like losing, so I’ve definitely carried this winning mentality with me till today.”

Among all the trophies, da Silva revealed that Meridian Secondary’s C Division boys’ win in 2017 is one of his best memories.

The team had been formed only that year after Coral Secondary and Siglap Secondary merged. But the players swept every team aside despite their underdog status.

tours around tottenham football club

While da Silva admitted the title was “a bit of a surprise”, he said: “That year, it took a little bit of time for them to understand well.

“But once they connected with our methodology, then there’s a lot of confidence.

“And that was when we brought everyone together and said, ‘let’s go and win’. When they went to the nationals, they were already strong and could go all the way.”

More recently, all four of Meridian Secondary’s teams reached the NSG final, winning the B Division boys and girls’ crowns as well as the C Division girls’ title.

Da Silva says it is only the beginning for him.

“Every day I learn as a coach,” he said. “It’s challenging, but working at the youth level is something I love to do.”
