Okay, even though Coral Castle isn’t actually made out of Coral and isn’t actually a castle, it’s still one of the really fun things to do in South Florida because of all the mystery behind it.

The construction has been compared to the likes on Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Egypt, with many claiming it to be scientifically inexplicable and improbably. Why? Because it was constructed by just one man alone for 28 years.

More than 1,000 tonnes of limestone was constructed into various different shapes such as a crescent moon, a sundial, tables and chairs and many more!

Located in Coral Cables, the Venetian Pool is America’s largest freshwater swimming pool. Completed in 1924 and designed by Phineas Piast with Denman Flink. The pool was just an abandoned rock quarry before they came along!

The 4 acre pool is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and also has a waterfall and a grotto. The crystal clear fresh water really does make it feel like paradise!

There are many cool places to visit in Florida found in Key West other than its beautiful beach scene. Of course, while you are there, you have to catch the sunset at Mallory Square (especially if you are only there for one night), but there are a lot of historical places, too. Things such as the Hemingway House and Fort Zachary Taylor.

The outdoors are key here – at  Bahia Honda State Park , a nature trail climbs the Old Bahia Honda Bridge to present an island panorama and crystalline view of the fish that snorkelers and anglers seek. Boca Raton is charming and vibrant community on the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. The City was influenced early on by architect Addison Mizner, whose signature Spanish-Mediterranean style is evident today at Mizner Park , the city’s famed outdoor dining and shopping plaza, and at the luxury resort The Boca Raton . The city’s dynamic cultural scene offers live concerts at the Mizner Park Amphitheater , international exhibits at the Boca Raton Museum of Art , and plenty of great dining. Boca Raton also boasts five miles of gorgeous beaches and 47 parks, including the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center , snorkel trails, pickleball and championship golf facilities, including the Boca Raton Golf & Racquet Club .

Boynton Beach

To the west, Boynton Beach goes green with golf; to the east, it sparkles Atlantic Ocean blue. In between, discover public arts programs and a 1913 schoolhouse re-purposed as the  Schoolhouse Children’s Museum and Learning Center , presenting hands-on, interactive exhibits on Florida history..

Coconut Grove

Eats. Boutiques. Entertainment. Arts. They’re everywhere you look in Coconut Grove, south of downtown Miami.  CocoWalk  and  Mayfair in the Grove  are trendy complexes dedicated to these pursuits, but take to the streets to experience “the Grove” as it has always been. The entrance to  The Barnacle Historic State Park , an 1891 estate on Biscayne Bay, hides amid shady trees.  Vizcaya Museum and Gardens , a European-inspired manse with an orchidarium and 34 rooms embellished with five centuries of antiques and art, is also here.

Coral Gables

We wouldn’t blame you if you classified Coral Gables as just another pretty place, though that is an understatement. Look closer to expose some interesting history; most of the tales star George Merrick, who founded and incorporated the city in 1925. See the grand  Biltmore Hotel  that he helped develop, and visual and performing arts events at the University of Miami (yes, Merrick helped get this going, too). Off campus,  Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden  preserves plants beautiful enough to live in “the Gables.”

Deerfield Beach

Surf, play volleyball or pier fish at this Blue Wave Beach.  Quiet Waters Park  offers a playground of another kind, including a children’s splash zone. The  Deerfield Beach Arboretum  sits in quiet contrast, with a butterfly garden amid trees from five continents.

Delray Beach

When locals saved two aging schools from demolition in the 1980s, Old School Square resurrected the buildings as the  Cornell Art Museum  and the  Crest Theatre . Delray’s patronage of the arts, and preservation, lives on in the galleries of Pineapple Grove Arts District, cultural centers including the  Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens , and events like Art and Jazz on the Avenue (the avenue is Atlantic, and its shopping and dining possibilities don’t stop ’til you reach the ocean).

Greater Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale has become synonymous with luxury – resorts, yachts and dream homes could be considered staples of the community. But let’s not forget what drew the luxe in: the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway, respectively responsible for Fort Lauderdale’s beachfront promenade (loll at a sidewalk café or walk along the Wave Wall) and a Venetian-like canal system where water taxis and, yes, gondolas run. Offshore from this Blue Wave Beach, fishing, diving and water sports dominate. For shopping, dining, nightlife and people-watching,  Las Olas Boulevard ,  The Colonnade Outlets at Sawgrass Mills  and  The Village at Gulfstream Park  are musts.

The water tower here is painted to look like a beach ball. Enough said. Try your hand at horses and Vegas-style slots at  Gulfstream Racing & Casino  and shopping and dining at  The Village of Gulfstream Park .

Most beaches boast boardwalks. This one boasts a  Boardwalk , two and a half pedestrian-friendly miles fronting Hollywood’s Blue Wave Beach. In the historic downtown, visitors find sidewalk cafes, galleries and  ArtsPark  at Young Circle, where a visual arts pavilion hosts artisan demos and even the children’s playground equipment is artful. Just a half-mile from the Broadwalk, wind through the mangroves in a canoe or kayak at  Anne Kolb Nature Center  at West Lake Park.

Homestead still works an agricultural angle, and any of its roadside stands offer sweet produce in season. The National Register recognizes a downtown school, residences and the town hall while crowds have made its eccentric  Coral Castle  a popular roadside attraction since 1953.

Islamorada, called the sport fishing capital of the world, rates among anglers of all ages and skill levels.  Theater of the Sea  has been hosting marine shows since 1946, though today you can actually swim with the dolphins, sea lions and stingrays.

The best way to see the spectacular reefs here is to dive right in (snorkeling and paddling are also acceptable).  John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park  runs glass-bottom boat tours in the shallow waters of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary just outside the park's borders, and divers delight upon reaching the sunken “Christ of the Abyss,” cast from a mold of a statue that rests in the Mediterranean Sea.

At the bottom of the U.S. and the top of many travelers’ life lists, Key West is colorful and free. Delight in innocent debauchery along Duval Street and celebrate the sunset at Mallory Square; then hop between historic digs along the Pelican Path (the sites are plenty, including the  Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum ,  Audubon House and Tropical Gardens  and  Harry S. Truman Little White House ). Take off in a seaplane (or boat) to reach one of the country’s most remote recreational areas,  Dry Tortugas National Park . The ultra-clear, jewel-blue water makes for unmatched fishing, diving and snorkeling.

A mainland gateway to Palm Beach, Lake Worth boasts a shore of its own, with a newly renovated pier, surf-able waves and unique restaurants.

Marathon is a jumping-off point for sport fishing and the  Seven Mile Bridge , one of America’s iconic drives. Charters and tournaments evidence the area’s angling meddle while an annual seafood festival proves that conch fritters taste best with a side of live music. Both point to Marathon’s fishing village foundation – learn more about the Middle Key history at  Crane Point Museum and Nature Center .

Ever the melting pot, Miami mixes ethnic neighborhoods with avant garde art, resulting in a big city made accessible by defined urban enclaves. Gentrifying  Wynwood  locates galleries and museums near the markets of Little San Juan. The  Design District  packs furniture, antiques and art within Little Haiti. And along  Little Havana’s Calle Ocho  (Eighth Street), the cigars are still hand-rolled, the café con leche steaming. The Biscayne Bay backdrop makes national-scale shopping, dining and nightlife memorable at downtown’s  Bayside Marketplace,  particularly at night when the water reflects city lights. Beyond the skyline and the bay, the  Miami Seaquarium  and the palm-and-sand paradise of  Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park  occupy Key Biscayne.

Miami Beach

Here, the playground is as pretty as the players. Palms and the Atlantic Ocean landscape Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern structures (the  Miami Design Preservation League  conducts tours), and art is all around in galleries, museums and events like  Art Basel  in Miami Beach, the most influential art show in the Americas. Shopping, too, goes world-class inside lush  Bal Harbour  – dress for an excursion here, then take a casual approach along Collins Avenue and Lincoln Road (also suitable for dining and keeping an eye on the scene). One block from Collins, legendary Ocean Drive unfurls shopping, noshing, beach going and partying, with lounges that come alive late into the night.

In 1896, Henry Flagler built a grand home-away-from-home for visitors here, the Palm Beach Inn. In 1902, he built a home for his bride, Whitehall. He doubled the size of the Palm Beach Inn and renamed it  The Breakers . After twice burning down, the inn has been reconstructed. It still stands today, luxurious as ever, and Whitehall persists as the  Flagler Museum  (Flagler’s collections as well as the tea partie hosted at the museum’s café from Thanksgiving to Easter conjure up America’s Gilded Age). Palm Beach’s reputation as a playground for the wealthy persists too. The affluence is palpable along  Worth Avenue , where fine art, labels like Cartier and Chanel and established restaurants grace Mediterranean storefronts and courtyards. Take the seasonal, historic walking tour of this Addison Mizner-designed district that begins at the Atlantic and leads you up Worth Avenue. Stay and shop! 

Just west of Fort Lauderdale, Plantation maintains a lush, inland oasis of golf greens and parks.  Plantation Preserve  offers the best of both, its course an Audubon-certified par 72; its park a walk through wetlands to a Tequesta Indian burial mound.

Pompano Beach

As its name suggests, the heart of this city north of Fort Lauderdale belongs to fishing. Tours are offered periodically of the 1907  Hillsboro Lighthouse , its black and white hull and skeletal construction as striking as the golden sand below.

West Palm Beach

West Palm Beach sits inland from Palm Beach, but echoes some of the same flavors in museums (notably, the  Norton Museum of Ar t) and an attractive open-air collection of shops and restaurants along Clematis Street. By day, discover the district’s historic appeal; by night, love it for its lounges and live music. For younger visitors, the  South Florida Science Museum ,  Palm Beach Zoo  and nearby  Lion Country Safari  present adventuresome options – Lion Country encourages visitors to drive through African-inspired forests and plains for glimpses of  giraffes, zebras, rhinos and wildebeests.

4.  Miami Beach Botanical Garden

The 50-year-old, 2.6-acre urban garden had a facelift in 2011 and is back to being a popular spot to spend time away from the bustle of the city for visitors and locals alike. Downstairs, an additional 7,900 square feet of space contains a dimly lit members-only cocktail lounge and gorgeous omakase counter, rounding out the chic Mediterr-Asian-themed experience.

Whether it’s browsing modern-age artifacts or perusing midcentury propaganda, visitors exploring Wolfsonian-FIU’s permanent and traveling exhibitions learn about the myriad ways art and design have helped shape the contemporary world. 16.  World Erotic Art Museum

The 20-year-old museum explores millennia of sex through classical art, ancient artifacts and a trove of naughty toys. In addition to housing numerous exhibits of erotic art from around the world, WEAM features a sizeable collection of antique penises and Instagram-worthy phalluses in all sizes and states of arousal.

Time Out tip: The new George Daniell Museum is also located in the same building. Known for his portraits of Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren and others, the gay American photographer and artist worked for Time and Life magazines.

17.  Lummus Park

This sprawling 74-acre park takes you through some of South Beach's most recognizable territory: along classic Ocean Drive architecture (hello, Versace Mansion), past muscle hunks doing pull-ups on the sand and right up to some prime ocean views. The park contains two outdoor gym areas plus rentals for umbrellas and chairs, bikes and even rollerblades so you can really blend in with the locals.

18.  Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU

The Jewish Museum of Florida tells the story of Miami’s large Hebrew community. You can breeze through this small cultural center spanning two interconnected historic synagogues in less than 30 minutes. The museum’s core exhibit, “MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida,” features more than 600 photographs and artifacts that capture the group’s settlement across the peninsula.

Bear with us here: Ocean Drive is fun. The touristy strip gets a bad wrap for its overpriced drinks (hello, $65 margarita) and we wouldn’t really advocate eating or drinking at one of the sidewalk cafes (unless it’s an epic drag brunch at Palace Bar , of course). But Ocean Drive is the absolute best place for weird Miami people-watching.

Much like Walt Disney World, SeaWorld Orlando is a mega amusement park that has long been an important part of family vacations to Florida. These gentle, slow-moving giant sea creatures were once supposedly mistaken for mermaids by Christopher Columbus on his famous voyage to the Americas. When you see them up close in person, you may wonder if old Christopher had been at sea for just a bit too long.

Manatee viewing is a great family outing between November and mid-April, and fortunately Florida has several good spots to see these creatures. One of the most popular (and free) places to see manatees is at the Tampa Electric Manatee Viewing Center at the Big Bend Power Station in Apollo Beach . Over on the West Coast in Riviera Beach, another good spot is the Manatee Lagoon and FPL Eco-Discovery Center . The viewing platforms are an ideal spot to see the manatees enjoying the warm waters below. In addition, it's a great place to educate the kids on not only manatees, but the wider Florida ecosystem.

Dry Tortugas National Park is home to the impressive Fort Jefferson , built by the US Government in the 1800s. Although this is the key attraction of the park, the beautiful reef islands, seven in total, that make up the Dry Tortugas are themselves worth the trip. You can tour the fort and spend the rest of the day enjoying the soft-sand beaches and snorkeling in the clear, shallow waters.

Located 70 miles west of Key West, these islands are not accessible by car. Catamaran boat trips from Key West bring visitors here for a full day, some of which includes a tour of the fort, time for beaching and snorkeling, and breakfast and lunch.

You can also camp here and, once the tourists have left for the day, you can have your own desert island experience. Access is via private boat or the public ferry that carries a maximum of 10 campers.

Most people touring the Keys make Key West their main destination due to its location at the end of the chain of islands. These adjacent, oceanfront mansions in Fort Myers offer a glimpse into the lives and livelihoods of inventor, Thomas Edison, and the founder of the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford. You can tour the homes and outbuildings, see where Edison conducted experiments, wander through the palm-lined grounds, and learn about Edison's famous botanical experiments. This outstanding, Venetian-inspired property, built mainly in the mid-1920s, consists of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the Circus Museum, the Ca' d'Zan, and gardens.

The Circus Museum celebrates the history of this unique form of performance. The Ca' d'Zan was the residence of John and Mable Ringling. Their inspiration for this waterfront Venetian-style mansion came from their travels in Europe and the great palaces of Venice. The 36,000-square-foot home was completed in 1926 and is an architectural masterpiece in southern Florida.

A visit to the art museum, housed in a stunning pink palace, is almost jarring after you view all the relatively low-brow circus memorabilia. It showcases the Ringling's extensive art collection, which includes classic pieces by Velazquez, El Greco, Van Dyke, Veronese, and Rubens. The Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg is located on the city's impressive waterfront and housed in a unique modern building designed to match the creativity of the artist himself. Wondering when it's best to go south? Depending on where you're headed (i.e. the Florida Panhandle and northern, cooler part of the state or the sunny Florida Keys) and what you're hoping to do during your vacation (i.e. soak up warm rays or ride roller coasters), the best time to visit Florida is twofold: between February and May and October and December .

If you've ever been unlucky enough to be in Florida when it snowed (yes, that's actually happened), you'll understand why it's important to get your vacation timing right. Let's face it, most of us head to the Sunshine State for, well, sunshine. And we're not looking for that cold bright sun that sometimes peaks from a winter cloud. We're talking about luxuriously hot rays that warm our bodies from the outside in. With that in mind, the best month to visit Florida is any month between February and May. At this time, you'll avoid the coldest months of the year (November through January), as well as those which are so stifling you'll wish for a blizzard (namely July and August). Oh, you'll also miss out on hurricane season, which runs from June to November (peaking between mid-August and mid-October). Here's a rundown of why you should visit during these months:

February: This early month sees highs that average around 75 degrees Fahrenheit in Miami and its lows dip to about 61. These temperatures will, of course, get warmer the farther south you go and colder for those heading north. The sun will shine on average for eight hours a day, and the sea temperature will be a refreshing 75 degrees. Rain only falls about six days of the month, so it's pretty dry and mild in February.

March : The highs are higher during this popular travel month, hitting about 77 degrees with lows of 64. Again, you won't see much rain, but you'll get an extra hour of sunshine over that found in February. Tourist numbers are on the up and up during this Spring Break month, which means you'll see more crowds. The popularity of March vacations in Florida also means you should be prepared for higher prices on everything from flights to hotel rooms to restaurants to attractions, especially if you're visiting during a school break.

April : This beautiful month offers warm temps (a high of 82) and even less rain (about 5 days) than its two predecessors. It's a busy travel month due to Easter, but once that's over, you'll see the crowds and inflated prices dissipate.

In terms of tourists, you won't have to fend them off since this is a shoulder month (a.k.a. that time between peak and off-peak seasons). In the case of Florida, the shoulder seasons can be found between April and May and September through November .

May : If you're looking for warmth, soak it up with the average highs of 87 degrees during this low-key month. You can enjoy low prices, lots of hotels to choose from, and much shorter lines at attractions, not to mention plenty of unimpeded space to stretch out on the silky soft beaches.

Things to Do in South Florida

A week in Miami is not unlike watching an unbelievable reality show, only this time it's actually real. Miami: the city where Jennifer Aniston went "public" with her romance to rocker John Mayer, where troubled British pop star Amy Winehouse married her incarcerated husband, and where the paparazzi camps out for days, hoping to catch a glimpse of something or someone fabulous. It's where former U.S. President Bill Clinton kibitzes with the head of a top modeling agency at a St. Tropez-ish beach club, and where Janet Reno, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon throw politically driven dance and cocktail parties at a South Beach nightclub. And about those unbelievable reality shows: A few have filmed here lately, too. Just ask the Kardashians. But that's just a small sample of the surreal, Fellini-esque world that exists way down here at the bottom of the map. Nothing in Miami is ever what it seems.

What used to be a relatively sleepy beach vacation destination has awakened from its humid slumber, upped its tempo, and finally earned its place in the Blackberries and iPhones of cutting-edge jet-setters worldwide. But don't be fooled by the hipper-than-thou, celebrity-drenched playground known as South Beach. While the chic elite do, indeed, flock to Miami's coolest enclave, it is surprisingly accessible to the average Joe, Jane, or José. Especially during the economic downturn, when there were indeed bargains to be had. For every Philippe Starck-designed, bank account-busting boutique hotel on South Beach (one actually refused to lower its prices during the evil recession despite the fact that rooms were empty), there's a kitschy, candy-coated Art Deco one that's much less taxing on the pockets. For each Pan-Mediterranean-Asian haute cuisine restaurant, there's always the down-home, no-nonsense Cuban bodega offering hearty food at ridiculously cheap prices.

Beyond the whole glitzy, Us Weekly -meets-beach-blanket-bacchanalia-as-seen-on-TV, Miami has an endless number of sporting, cultural, and recreational activities to keep you entertained. Its sparkling beaches are beyond compare. Plus, it has excellent shopping and nightlife activities, including ballet, theater, and opera (as well as all the celebrity-saturated hotels, restaurants, bars, and clubs that have helped make Miami so famous).

One thing you'll notice about Miami is the number of construction cranes dotting the skyline, languishing there as the last remnants of a real estate boom that has since crashed. For now, we take pride in watching the already majestic skyline take a new shape, albeit with empty, multimillion-dollar condos that many describe as soulless.

Leave Miami, be it for the Keys, the Gold Coast, or the Treasure Coast, and you'll expose yourself not only to more UV rays, but to a world of cultural, historical, and sybaritic surprises where you can take in a spring baseball game, walk in the footsteps of Hemingway, get up-close and personal with the area's sea life, soak up the serenity of unspoiled landscapes, catch the filming of CSI: Miami or a big-budget Hollywood flick, and much more.

Forget what you've heard about South Florida being "Heaven's Waiting Room." That slogan is as passé as the concept of early-bird dinners (which you can still get -- they just no longer define the region). In fact, according to some people, South Florida is heaven.

This state also boasts plenty of history for travelers keen on southern Americana. Walking around these beach towns and exploring the historic sites is just a part of the charm. The unique thing about Florida beach towns is their diversity. While some towns resemble small, classic Florida beaches, others are tropical. These are the most breathtaking coastal towns in Florida.

Islamorada is a tropical paradise that encompasses six of the Florida Keys . It is known as the "sport fishing capital of the world" and is also a top scuba diving destination. It has long been affectionately regarded as a drinking town with a fishing problem! There are many adventures on land, such as the Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park, a former quarry. The Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park covers 10,000 acres and has a tropical forest. The park is a kayaker's paradise. The beach, azure waters, and ecological parks make this one of Florida's most breathtaking coastal towns.

Key West , the southernmost point in the continental US, is a historic and beautiful beach town. It is known for famous haunts such as Sloppy Joe's and historic properties like the Hemingway House. However, the beach makes Key West one of the prettiest towns in Florida. A visit to Key West is akin to a Caribbean vacation without having to leave the United States. In addition to being a major vacation destination and cruise ship hub, the town is known for its pastel-colored houses and laid-back atmosphere.

Cedar Key is a barrier island off the northwest coast of Florida. It has an old Florida vibe and small-town charm. A chain of smaller islands has been designated the Cedar Key National Wildlife Refuge, with a rich collection of birds. Cedar Key Museum State Park includes a home from the 1920s and a pleasant hiking trail.

This small island town has long been a haven for writers and artists who gain inspiration from its unspoiled habitat. Several hiking trails attract outdoor enthusiasts. Cedar Key is one of the most breathtaking towns in Florida because of its low-key atmosphere and natural scenery.

Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island is the ultimate destination for a quiet and relaxing beach vacation. It is separated from its sister island, Captiva, by a small channel created by a hurricane in the 1920s. The J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife is a barrier island containing the largest mangrove ecosystem in the US. Along with the pristine beaches, Sanibel is famous for its lush gardens. The small island town is also the seashell capital of the world. Its unique position in the Gulf of Mexico allows an extraordinary amount of seashells to be deposited on the falling tide. The best way to get around is by bicycle or walking to enjoy the island's natural beauty.

Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria is a barrier island off the southwest coast, and it is known for its beaches. The white powdery sand never gets too hot to walk on, and the clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico provide lifelong memories. There are attractions like the Historical Society Museum and a 1920s cottage in town. The wooden pier is over 100 years old and is ideal for watching the famous sunsets. Beaches such as Coquina and Holmes have restaurants like the Sandbar, where you can dine with your feet in the sand. If you can pull away from the tropical beaches, Pine Island is the main drag and is home to shopping, dining, and other boutique shops.

Siesta Key is in Sarasota County on the Gulf Coast and is a popular beach destination. Instead of pulverized coral, the sand is 99% pure quartz. The silica sand washed down from the Appalachian Mountains, and it took over one million years to create the beach. Siesta Key Village is the regional marketplace and a great lunch place.

Crescent Beach is home to the Point of Rocks, limestone outcroppings with tidal pools and coral reefs. A trolley service is available, but walking is the best way to get around. Sundays are a great day to visit because the community drum circle always draws a fun crowd.

Naples , on the Gulf Coast, is a sophisticated town with world-class shopping and beaches. The town's focal point is the pier, first constructed in 1888. It is also considered the "golf capital of the world" because of the numerous golf courses, many of which have beach views.

Fifth Avenue and Third Street South are the focal points for many high-end stores. The amazing downtown is right off the beach, and many cafes offer scenic views of the tranquil waters. For those looking for sun and sand, Loudermilk Park is a popular beach for locals and visitors.

Seaside is a charming beach town on the Emerald Coast . It is known for its idyllic surroundings and pastel-colored houses. The film The Truman Show, starring Jim Carrey, was set here because of the serene setting. The 20th-century New Urbanist architecture and white picket fences accentuate the charm and beauty. Situated between Miami and Palm Beach on Florida’s Atlantic coast, Fort Lauderdale sometimes gets short shrift when it comes to Florida vacation destinations compared to its glitzier neighbors. One of Florida’s largest cities, it spans 24 miles of beachfront along the Atlantic Ocean and stretches inland over the Intracoastal Waterway.

But you don’t need to look very hard to find plenty of reasons to stick around. From sunny beaches to gondola rides on canals, and plenty of arts, culture, and shopping along the way, Fort Lauderdale has proven that it's a destination worthy of your time.

Start At The Riverwalk

You could spend an entire weekend exploring the 22-block Arts and Entertainment District along the city's Riverwalk, which follows the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale. In addition to many museums, this area has multiple parks and green spaces, restaurants, and is a lovely place to stroll.

Soak Up The Sun And Sand

With 24 miles of shoreline, you've got to include a little time on the beach while you're in the area. There's a beach here for every type of sun-seeker. Fort Lauderdale Beach is the most popular, and the most crowded. For a quieter experience, Vista Park has beach access with picnic tables and waterfront seating. Las Olas Oceanside Park has a splash pad and an amphitheater. There's even a dog-friendly stretch of sand called Canine Park.

Go Shopping On Las Olas Boulevard

Besides the scenic A1A Highway which runs north to south through the city, Las Olas Boulevard is a main thoroughfare through the heart of downtown, running east to west and offering boutique shopping, art galleries, and dining.

Check Out A Museum

If you’re looking to expand your horizons, head to the Museum of Discovery and Science or the NSU Art Museum , both located downtown. Keep tabs on events happening in two arts districts: MASS District Art Walk is a free outdoor event that runs the last Saturday of every month for 10 years and FAT Village (named for Flagler, Art, and Technology) is four blocks of Fort Lauderdale’s historic warehouse district teeming with creativity.

Head To The Wharf

I've Lived in Florida for 27 Years — and These Are the Best Affordable Beach Vacations in the State

A local weighs in on the best cheap beach vacations in Florida without the high price tags.

Hundreds of miles of coastline keep Florida top of mind for a beach vacation year-round. And despite the Sunshine State's perpetual popularity, you might be surprised by how much terrain there is for a cheap beach getaway filled with fun.

After 27 years in Florida, I’ve done my fair share of poking around for the finest sandy stretches the state has to offer.

When friends come to visit from across the country or around the world, I always point them to a few places they’d likely never discover on their own — all the better for having a unique Florida experience while saving some money. With that in mind, here are some of some of my favorite places for a cheap beach vacation in Florida that doesn't skimp on sun and fun.

Apalachicola

Famous for its oyster bars and seafood shacks like LongBill’s, this friendly community along Florida’s Panhandle is prime for an affordable beach vacation, especially when you stay at a historic property like The Bowery Inn or Taranto House , both of which date to the early 1900s, or the lovely Gibson Inn , another historic hotel with a breezy wraparound porch.

“This community captivates the heart and soul of Old Florida charm with a relaxed vibe, incredible fishing, one-of-a-kind boutiques, and the liveliest locals slurping down fresh oysters and plenty of libations,” says Jason Bogan, general manager of The Gibson Inn. “So, come on down, pull up a stool, and immerse yourself in some genuine Southern hospitality.”

Among the many unspoiled white-sand beaches in Apalachicola and the Forgotten Coast are stretches lining the beautiful barrier island of St. George. Laura Byrne of Tampa Bay Parenting says she first fell in love with the island’s beaches while living in Tallahassee some years ago (Florida’s state capital is about 80 miles northeast of St. George Island).

“I’m from Tampa and was used to the beautiful sugar-sand beaches of Clearwater, and St. George Island State Park did not disappoint,” says Byrne. Grab a kayak or canoe from Island Outfitters and paddle in the Gulf of Mexico or along the Apalachicola River Paddling Trail System , or rent a golf cart to explore Apalachicola’s historic district, home to many interesting buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach was always my preferred destination for an affordable beach weekend when I spent a few years after college living in nearby Orlando. Just about a one-hour drive east of Orlando puts you along these dune-backed beaches where pro surfer Kelly Slater grew up shredding waves. You can rent a board at Ron Jon Surf Shop and paddle out near the Cocoa Beach Pier , or sign up for surf lessons at the School of Surf . Budget-minded hotels in the area include Beach Place Guesthouses — one of my favorites in all of Florida for a low-key stay — strung with hammocks and fronting a quiet stretch of sand with loaner surfboards at the ready. Rise early from August to September for a beach walk here, and you might even see baby sea turtles hatching. Also be sure to check the rocket launch calendar for a free show in the sky. "The Wizard of Oz" fans will want to shell out a few bucks to pop into the quirky Wizard of Oz Museum , home to a private collection that spans decades of memorabilia. With all this and more, it's no wonder Cocoa Beach is one of the best beaches near Orlando .

New Smyrna Beach

New Smyrna Beach , another popular option not far from Orlando, is a safe and beautiful bet for an affordable beach vacation in Florida. Oceanfront condos for rent line the packed sand, plus you can consider a riverside stay at one of my favorite bed-and-breakfasts in the state — Black Dolphin Inn , which fronts the Intracoastal Waterway. A quintessential Florida feed awaits on the river at JB’s Fish Camp , a local favorite for its fabulous grouper sandwich and fish dip. You can rent kayaks and paddleboards here, too, and paddle out into the surrounding river. Florida’s largest stretch of undeveloped coastline also awaits at Canaveral National Seashore , with 24 miles of pristine sand for sunbathing, shelling, and swimming.

Panama City Beach

This former party-heavy destination has pivoted in recent years to become a favorite among families seeking an affordable and cheerful beach vacation in Florida. Panama City Beach’s unpretentious vibes pair with gorgeous Gulf of Mexico beaches, making it a top Panhandle destination. Scuba divers like me flock to the area to blow bubbles underwater at five shipwrecks that are part of the Florida Panhandle Shipwreck Trail . And you only need a mask and snorkel to fin out from the beach and explore the rock jetty and artificial reef attracting tropical fish, rays, and more at St. Andrews State Park . Book an affordable room at the beachfront Flamingo Hotel and Tower ; hit Shrimp Basket for a budget feast of oysters, wings, and shrimp; and simply bask in the mellow beach vibes.

Pensacola Beach

With accommodation options that range from camping at Fort Pickens to the beachfront Pensacola Beach RV Resort and chain hotels to the gorgeous Pensacola Beach Resort , this is another affordable Panhandle destination in Florida. You can explore the area on a budget aboard the 145-passenger Pensacola Bay City Ferry, which connects downtown Pensacola, Fort Pickens, and Pensacola Beach. But you’ll want to jump in the car to visit other gorgeous area beaches, too, like Johnson Beach at Gulf Islands National Seashore and the dune-backed white strand at Perdido Key State Park . From April through October, free bands play at Pensacola Beach, and people bring lawn chairs and settle in for the evening.The U.S. Navy Blue Angels are at home in Pensacola, so you might even be treated to a free show in the sky. Lastly, don’t miss Atlas Oyster House for a lively brunch in town plus cheap bloody marys and bottles of bubbly.

Bradenton Beach

A vacation in Bradenton Beach along Florida’s Gulf Coast puts visitors within a quick drive of some of the region’s most gorgeous beaches along Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key — all for a fraction of the price. You can still find old-school properties like Beach Dreams and BridgeWalk fronting the white sand and historic district here. You can also explore the area for free aboard the Island Trolley , which makes a loop from Bradenton’s Coquina Beach north to Anna Maria Island’s City Pier. Weekends boom with families descending for all-you-can-eat pancakes served with Gulf of Mexico views at the beloved Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe . And the lively Coquina Beach Market , next to Longboat Pass and with all kinds of crafts and handmade items for sale, always makes for a fun, free outing on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

St. Augustine Beach

St. Augustine may be one of Florida’s most touristic (and historic) cities, but you can have a surprisingly affordable beach vacation here, too.

Tour St. Augustine offers free historic walking tours of the downtown attractions every Saturday and Sunday, as well as other options. My kids love riding the free passenger ferry to Rattlesnake Island to play pirates at Fort Matanzas National Monument, which has gorgeous views overlooking the Matanzas River. There’s also a playground that kids love at Lighthouse Park , where you can picnic under the oaks and take in the lighthouse views. When it comes to beach time, there’s no better free activity than bodysurfing and searching the sand for shark teeth at St. Augustine Beach or Vilano Beach, where you'll still find affordable, mom-and-pop properties like Magic Beach Motel .

Lake Worth Beach

Just south of tony Palm Beach, Lake Worth Beach is a great option if you’re looking for an affordable vacation along this notoriously pricey stretch of South Florida. The City of Lake Worth Beach pier is a favorite spot among surfers and has a buzzing breakfast joint — Benny’s on the Beach , where the kids can fill up on French toast and pancakes, then scoot down to the sand, while the bloody marys and mimosas flow for adults. Between Lake Worth and Lantana, just south, there are plenty of mom-and-pop hotels within a short bike ride of the beaches, including Beachway Inn and Barefoot Mailman Inn & Suites . The Lake Worth Beach Waterside Farmers Market is a lively place to spend a Saturday morning from October through April, with coffee, music, and dancing in the street. Free concerts and festivals with lagoon views often play out at the bandshell at Bryant Park Pavilion, too.

Indian Rocks Beach

Beloved by locals, but often overlooked where it sits between busier St. Pete Beach to the south and Clearwater Beach to the north, Indian Rocks Beach is one of my go-tos for an affordable beach vacation in the Tampa Bay area, where I live.

Sign the family up for surf lessons with Sister Jo’s Surf School (the waves are almost always ideal for beginners) and stroll the boardwalk through a marshy forest at the small but beautiful Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve. “I love that you can enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling here, and the white sand is perfect for building castles and finding unique shells,” says Karimah Henry of Crafting a Fun Life .

When I visit with my own family, I love staying just south of Indian Rocks Beach, in Indian Shores, at the affordable Legacy Vacation Resorts . A certified B Corp property, it fronts the Intracoastal Waterway and has an outdoor grilling area where we cook hot dogs and hamburgers to save on dining out while enjoying some of the best waterfront views around.

Bonita Springs

Just north of flashy Naples, Bonita Springs offers an affordable Florida beach vacation with access to equally lovely Gulf of Mexico sand. Make the Hyatt Vacation Club at Coconut Cove your base, and enjoy the 1,000-foot lazy river, fire pit, barbecue area, and tiki bar. Nearby, Lovers Key State Park 's two miles of undeveloped sand beckons for shelling and boogie boarding. Dive into more of the area’s singular tropical nature at Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary , where you can stroll along a boardwalk through the largest old-growth bald cypress forest in North America. When hunger strikes, follow the neon to Mel’s Diner , which serves comfort foods like pot roast melts and pulled pork sandwiches that won’t break the bank.

Florida, located between Gulf of Mexico & the Atlantic, is a unique location in US

The ninth edition of the T20 Cricket World Cup is underway in the United States and the West Indies. It is the first time the USA is hosting a major ICC event, and with the inclusion of numerous new debutant teams such as Canada and Uganda, the worldwide appeal of cricket is sure to grow following this tournament. 

This is also the first ICC event to feature 20 teams, a significant increase from the 16 teams in the 2022 edition. The tournament will take place primarily on the East Coast, with stadiums in New York, Long Island, and Florida, among other locations. Among these, the state of Florida is an excellent choice for fans travelling to the United States to explore.

The Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill will witness the contests of heavyweights including India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It is in this venue that the Men In Blue will lock horns with Canada on June 15, Saturday.

With 58 million visitors every year, Walt Disney World Resort is regarded as one of the world's most popular tourist attractions. It is a vast resort complex with four world-class amusement parks, two water parks, many golf courses, and retail and eating areas. It is developed on a 25,000-acre plot of land, and its attractions include Magic Kingdom Park, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, and so on.

    3. St. Augustine

St. Augustine is America's oldest city, having a history dating back around 450 years. Located on the Atlantic coast of northeastern Florida, it is also the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the United States. As a result, it is home to a wide variety of historic sites, including the Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the United States, and the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, where Spanish explorer Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles established the first colony in St. Augustine. The southern region of Florida is home to a network of wetlands, prairies, marshes that is home to some of the most diverse wildlife in america. It is the largest tropical wilderness in the United States, and Everglades National Park was established in 1947 to preserve the natural landscape that was rapidly disappearing. UNESCO has designated the park as a World Heritage Site, and nearly a million people visit it each year. For every wildlife enthusiast, this is a wonderful attraction because it is home to animals like American Alligator, West Indian Manatee, Roseate Spoonbill, and others.

    5. Kennedy Space Center

The John F. Kennedy Space Center, located on Merritt Island, Florida, is one of the ten field centres and has served as NASA's principal launch site for spacecraft since 1968. Following his 1963 assassination, it was named in remembrance of the late US President John F. Kennedy. 

Aside from being an important location for space missions, it is also a popular tourist attraction. There are bus tours that take guests around the many sights in the centre. The most well-known attractions include the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame, which honours American astronauts, the Space Shuttle Atlantis, which is also on display, and the Apollo/Saturn V Center, which is a museum with a restored Saturn V launch vehicle. Other attractions include Rocket Garden, Shuttle Launch Experience, and the Space Mirror Memorial. There are also two IMAX cinemas, which offer an immersive film experience on NASA and space exploration.
