Shimla Tour Packages

Compare shimla tours & packages from top travel agents, shimla heritage walk.

Shimla is a heritage city and had been the British's favourite destination to spend the summer. And so, you can find a lot of British touch to everything here; from the buildings to the overall construction of the city, to even the food. The most popular heritage building here being the Viceregal Lodge, also known as the Rashtrapati Niwas was the residence of the Viceroy of India, during the British rule. The Shimla Heritage Museum is also an attraction for tourists looking for all historical insight into the city and the state of Himachal in general. The Heritage Walk will make you see the British architecture that had a strong Scottish influence, definitely visible at the Church on the Mall Road. Also, a walk through the ridge will make you see the beauty of the hills!

Shimla’s Religious Trail

Shimla is home to many temples and holy shrines. The most famous is the Jakhu temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, located on the top of the hill by the same name. The statue overlooks the Mall Road and can be seen from many parts of the city. A little farther from the city of Shimla, right on the outskirts is the Tara Devi temple. Legend has it that Goddess Tara Devi watches over the whole town and has a protective gaze, with the statement location of the temple on top of a hill.  Shimla also happens to have its own Kali Bari! With the Kali Bari being older than 150 years, this abode of Goddess Kali is a popular tourist attraction and a spiritual hub both for locals and travellers. The oldest temple in the city remains the Laxminarayan Temple. It is dedicated to Maa Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and is flocked by lakhs of people every year.

Places to Visit in Shimla

Visceral Lodge: It is a perfect place for history lovers. Built in 1888, this six story building constructed in Scottish Baronial style once served as the residence of Lord Dufferin, the British Viceroy of India. Jakhoo Temple: The Jakhu Temple is an ancient site dedicated to the Hindu god - Hanuman. It has the world's largest Hanuman statue, which is visible from most parts of Shimla. It is believed that Lord Hanuman stopped at this spot to take some rest before resuming his search for the Sanjeevani Booti to revive Lord Lakshman. Mall Road: Shopping in Shimla revolves around the heart of the town- The Mall Road. One can shop for local handicrafts, shawls, woolens, exquisite jewelry etc. here. The stores that are located on the Mall Road are famous for their woollen clothes and exclusively handcrafted works, apart from the usual books and jewellery. Christ Church: Located at the Mall Road itself, this church is the second oldest church in North India. The interiors and the neo-gothic architecture are very beautiful and appealing. At night, the church literally glows when it is lighted up, while in winters, it dons the look of a magnificent castle.  The Ridge: The Ridge is the most photographed wide-open street located on the side of Shimla Mall Road. The Ridge has everything, from shops selling some exclusive artefacts to the spectacular view of the snow-capped mountain ranges. It is famous for a lot of things, but best known for shopping and for being the social hub of the city.  Scandal Point: The Scandal Point is located on the Mall Road. It owes its interesting name to the fact that the King of Patiala abducted the daughter of the Viceroy, because he fell in love with her, from this very place. This point is a mountain lover's haven because it enjoys a picturesque and unobstructed view of gigantic mountains covered in a blanket of dense fir and spruce. Green Valley: The Green Valley is a beautiful and breathtaking mountain range that falls on the way to Kufri from Shimla. The Green Valley is surrounded by verdant hills on all sides covered with thick pine and deodar forests. It is not uncommon to sight some Yaks wandering and grazing around in the valley.  Himachal State Museum: The Himachal State Museum is located on the Mall Road and has unique collectibles like ancient coins, paintings and other handicraft items, the aesthetics of which are influenced by the Pahari form of art. Kalibari Temple: Kalibari Temple is an ancient place of worship dedicated to Goddess Kali. The shrine houses a captivating idol of Goddess Kali beautifully adorned with jewellery and colourful flowers. Kufri: Kufri, located at a distance of 20km from the main city of Shimla, is a popular tourist destination known for its skii slopes, Kufri Zoo and as starting point of treks. Mahasu Peak and Fagu Valley are the main attractions in Kufri that are accessible via pony ride.  Chail: Chail is a quiet hill station close (44km) to Shimla, known for the world's highest cricket ground and a heritage hotel, Chail Palace. Chail also offers various trekking and camping options for adventure enthusiasts. Tourists typically cover Shimla, Kufri and Chail in the same trip and many  Shimla packages also offer the same. Manali: One of the most popular hill stations in Himachal, Manali offers the most magnificent views of the Pir Panjal and the Dhauladhar ranges covered with snow for most parts of the year. Manali is often visited along with Shimla and Manali Shimla packages often cover tourist attractions like Hadimba Temple, Solang Valley, Rohtang Pass, Manikaran, Atal Tunnel and many more such places.

Things to Do in Shimla

Skii in Kufri: Kufri, the winter sports capital of Shimla is a skier's paradise. It is among the oldest places in India to be associated with Skiing. Even today the bulging slopes covered with thick snow are considered to be perfect for skiing. It has a range of hills to offer, including a beginner's run, an advanced slope, and a slalom run. The best time to roll into the snow of Kufri is from mid- December to early February.  Ride the Kalka Shimla Toy Train: The Kalka to Shimla route is best travelled by way of the toy train that runs on a narrow-gauge track and is known for its dramatic views of the hills and surrounding villages. The historic Kalka Shimla Toy train is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and takes individuals on a 5 and a half hours ride amongst vast green hills and deodar and pine forests.  Horse Riding: Horse riding is a popular and much loved activity in both Shimla and Kufri. In Shimla, Horse Riding Options are generally available at the Ridge, while in Kufri one can ride through apple orchards and all the way to the Kufri Zoo. A lot of times, horses tend to be the only means to reach someplace in Kufri. Ice Skating: Ice Skating is a famous sport in the beautiful city of Shimla. The Shimla Ice Skating Rink is well-known because it is a naturally formed rink found in the town and is also the largest and the only naturally formed rink found in South Asia. The best time to go Ice Skating in Shimla is between December and February.  Trekking: For lovers of both the cold and trekking, few places other than Shimla offer better opportunities. There are many day treks near Shimla which cater to all age groups and difficulty levels. Some popular trek routes from Shimla are Karol Tibba, Tara Devi, Hatu Peak, Naldehra Trek, Chadwick Falls Trek among others.

One of the most romantic and captivating hill stations in North India, Shimla is a haven for all types of tourists. From honeymooners to family holiday-goers, friend-a-cations to a perfect long weekend getaway, Shimla boasts of everything you want in your hilly holiday destination.

Fun, shopping, touring and everything under the bright yellow sun, we at Shimla Tourism, a division of Holidays DNA present to you a fun way of exploring the corners of Shimla with our Shimla Local Sightseeing Tour Packages .

The majestic snow-clad mountains beckon you to explore their rich canvas and paint the picture of green and blue and everything you want to. Shimla leaves such a mark on every holiday.

#Trivia: Located in the high passes of Himachal Pradesh, it is famously dubbed as ‘Home to the First Mall Road Of India’ or ‘The Queen of Hill stations’. Ironically Mall Road is a place where traders from near and far used to gather once a day or once a week to trade their goods, carrying their heavy loads up and down the steep hills of Shimla. Hence the name.

There are a number of things to do and places to explore if you want to take a holiday to the most coveted and popular tourist destinations in Himachal.

A booming summer capital of British India and now the Capital of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla can be seen buzzing with liveliness on all its touristy spots. So catch your breath, breathe in some freshness and let’s go on a trip to explore the local sightseeing options of this gorgeous hill station.

1. The Ridge

The Ridge, Shimla

The famous Ridge is an absolute ‘must-stop’ and ‘cannot be missed’ popular central market and tourist spots of Shimla. It overlooks almost the entire city, with sparkling lights illuminating the night sky.

It is open all day long and does not require any entry fee. Please note that you cannot take your vehicles on the Ridge or on Mall road. There is an official parking area made at the bottom of the hill to ease this woe and you can then climb it to the top or just take the elevator.

It is connected from east to west along the Mall road and offers spectacular views on either side of the road.

#Trivia: A picture speaks a thousand words and the Ridge has been famously featured in some motion pictures like ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Black’, ‘Udaan’ and many others.

The Ridge is a huge open area that is buzzing with activity all day long. From horse rides to street food options, clicking a picture in traditional Shimla attire to short rides for children, you can simply relax and let your hair down at the end of a hectic sightseeing day.

You can visit the Tudor library, Scandal point on the west or Christ Church while at the Ridge.

2. Mall Road

Mall Road, Shimla

We have deliberately kept the two (the Ridge and Mall Road) separate, although they are located one below the other. The Mall road of Shimla is a place buzzing with eateries and lots of shopping. The heart of the hill station, you can find a number of local shops and local bakeries that have been around for decades.

The small cafes lining the mall road are a delight to just sit and watch the world go by. While on the Mall road, you can walk the entire stretch to buy woollens, small handicraft items, gifts for kids, and much more.

One particular thing to notice is how clean Mall road is. Yes, clean! There are dustbins allotted at every 50 meters nearly to help you pitch your garbage away and not throw them on the road. The police are patrolling the area and are keeping a strict vigil about the health of their favourite Mall road.

While on the Mall road, make sure you drop by Johnny’s Wax Museum . A quaint little place that is made by a local guy called Johnny- it houses famous national and international personalities and is a beautiful place to enjoy some quiet time.

You can also visit Kali Bari temple , Gaiety Theatre and Town Hall while walking here.

3. Jakhoo Temple

Jakhoo Temple, Shimla

Well-connected by a road leading up from the Ridge or a 2 km round trip up to the hilltop, Jakhoo Hill or Temple is home to an enormous standing statue of Lord Hanuman, its chief deity. Surrounded by countless monkeys, Jakhoo temple is a tranquil place to simply sit down and offer your obeisance to the lord.

To make travel easier, you can also take the Ropeway that starts from one end of the Ridge up to 8000 Ft. Jakhoo hill and back. The trip costs Rs. 300 to Rs. 500 per person but it is best to speak to the operator at that time. It is operational all day long but the last ropeway ride from the temple starts at 5:30 pm. If you miss it, you will have to travel all the way back on foot.

There is a huge space where the statue of the Lord stands tall (quite literally) and a temple as well to offer your prayers. A small children’s play area has also been made to keep your little ones engaged.

#Trivia: The 108 feet tall statue is nearly visible from all parts of Shimla. Towering in between the huge trees, this statue is a welcome sight for all those visiting the hill station.

4. Kalka-Shimla Railway

Kalka-Shimla Railway, Shimla

Built in 1898 to connect Shimla with other railway lines of India by the British, the Kalka-Shimla Railway is a must try while planning a trip to Shimla. The journey starts at Shimla and culminates in Shimla, making this narrow-gauge railway a gorgeous journey worth traversing.

It covers approximately a distance of 96 km from Kalka to Shimla, stopping at 18 stations along the way. It is a way of daily commute for many locals.

#Trivia: It was accredited by UNESCO in 2008 and added to the mountain railways of India World Heritage Site.

If you wish to take a ride through the mountainous terrain of Shimla, this approximately 4 hour ride is definitely worth it. A sight to reckon and keep in your memory forever.

5. Christ Church

Christ Church, Shimla

An excellent example of neo-gothic architecture, Christ Church is an evergreen part of Shimla’s skyscape. Built in 1857, it is located on The Ridge and took nearly 3 years to complete. The gorgeous frescoes lining the interiors with stained glass windows and a clock tower are iconic to the Shimla skyline.

#Trivia: Home to the largest pipe organ in India.

Kufri, Shimla

The iconic tourist spot located around 17 kms from Shimla main city, is a travellers paradise. With multiple things to see and do, Kufri is the hub of all tourist activity of this hill station. Easily accessible by road, you can park your vehicles at the parking lot at the bottom of the hillock.

The only way to get to the top of Kufri hill is on a horse back or walking. The narrow rugged road is quite unsheathing to walk up and will exhaust you completely. Lined with rocks and uneven terrain, climb right to the top of the hill is quite steep and not worth climbing on foot.

Horse rides cost around Rs. 500 to Rs.800 per person to go back and forth and is an adventurous one indeed. Once on top, you can spend a good 2 to 3 hours roaming around and eating from the local shops on the hill.

There are a lot of games as well for children to explore along with knick-knacks to purchase. The viewing point from the top of the hill costs around Rs. 150 to see distant places from a telescope. If you are keen, you can explore this as well.

The Yaks are a sight to behold. These absolutely massive and heavy furred creatures just make you keep looking at them. A photo will cost approximately Rs. 100 or so but needs to be bargained.

Enjoy the freshness of the air and a gorgeous view of the surroundings when on top of Kufri.

7. Mashobra apple orchards

Mashobra apple orchards, Shimla

Another gorgeous place of interest in Shimla is Mashobra. Located around 20 kms from the main city, it is famous for its apple orchards.

Lined on a steep hill, the view from the apple orchard boasts of exuberance and gaiety. Explore the different fruit trees and apple trees. Once up the height of the mountain, the breath-taking views completely take you by surprise.

The mist-bathed pine and cedar trees form a picturesque stream of beauty gushing down the valley of ‘Quieter Shimla’, attracting every tourist as they pass by. You can definitely enjoy a quiet time holidaying in Mashobra, heaven away from the buzzing Shimla city life.

Things you can do at Mashobra include quad biking, trekking, biking, rappelling, river rafting, bird watching, paragliding and much more.

8. Himachal State Museum

Himachal State Museum, Shimla

Located on top of Mount Pleasant, it is an iconic structure gracing the skyline of Shimla since 1974. It was built to protect and preserve the cultural heritage of the city. It gives you a firsthand record of the city’s glorious past that speak to you through its architecture, paintings, archaeological findings, handicrafts, sculptures, and much more.

The entry tickets is Rs. 20 for Indians, Rs. 100 for foreigners, Rs. 100 for photography. It is open on all days from 10 am to 5 pm except Mondays.

9. Annandale

Annandale, Shimla

One of the key attractions of Shimla, Annandale, also known as Annadale, is located around 4 kms from the Ridge. Once a playground for the British, it was used to play polo, cricket and also horse racing. It is now converted to a small golf course and is also used as a heli-pad for official dignitaries.

Things to see in Annandale is the Army museum and Cactus museum. Explore the beautiful expanse of the nearby gardens while touring Annandale.

10. Summer Hill

Summer Hill, Shimla

A quaint little town located around 5 kms from the Ridge, Summer hill, also known as Potters Hill, is a beautiful place to roam around. It is believed that people used to come here to make clay pots and kilns here. It offers a spectacular view of the steep valley and expansive green escapade. It is part of a cluster of 7 hills that form Shimla and hence regales you with its beautiful sights.

You can visit the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) while visiting Summer hill.

#Trivia: IIAS is a also known as Rashtrapati Niwas situated in the famous Viceregal Lodge atop the Observatory hill. Built between 1880 to 1888, it is a marvellous place to enjoy the culmination of beauty with science. The tickets are priced between Rs. 20 to Rs. 50 approximately.

Best time to visit Shimla

The best time to visit Shimla is during the summer season, from March to May, as the weather is cool throughout the year.

The capital gets considerable rainfall as it is situated at a height and hence it is best to avoid it during monsoon season i.e. from June to September.

The early winter months, between October to December, are particularly interesting to experience the cold here. Snowfall begins from December end and lasts up to February. If you wish to experience snow, this is the time to be here. Be wary about the weather and take all precautions while travelling.

How to reach Shimla

Shimla is accessible by road from all major cities in India. You can also take a train trip from Kalka to Shimla in the toy train i.e. a journey of around 4 hours, and enjoy the splendid sights that keep you awestruck.

You can take the Chandigarh-Shimla highway that will have you at the city within 3 to 4 hours. The nearest station is Kalka i.e. approx. 90 kms away and all major trains connect to Kalka from different parts of the country.

The roads are well made but it is advisable to take an experienced driver from top car rental companies in Shimla with you, in case you are not comfortable with steep hills.

It was an awesome experience to be tie up with Tour2Himachal team. The experience started with general queries to final deal confirmation, I decided to book "Shimla & Manali" tour package (5N/6D) and as finalized, there was one representative for receive us at airport and after that he took the entire responsibility to serve the best world class services.   I think, everyone who is looking for tour packages have a two basic concerns…"Privacy & Security" and I must say thanks to 'Atul & Yogi' for your commitments and services throughout the journey. They both were standing on their toe and fulfill our wishes even before we asked. We have experienced the amazing hospitality & facilities arranged at Shimla & Manali. The queen of hill stations, shimla.

We start our tour at Shimla, the "Queen of Hill Stations." You will be taken back in time to a time when this quaint town was British India's summer capital as soon as you set foot in it. A seductive atmosphere is created by the city's colonial architecture, clean mountain air, and tranquil surroundings.

1. The Ridge:  The Ridge, a spacious platform with expansive views of the surrounding mountains, is the ideal place to begin your adventure. It's the ideal location for a stroll in the evening, especially as the sun sets and the sky turns crimson and orange.

2. Mall Road:  The Mall Road in Shimla is a shopping haven. A wide range of regional woollen goods, handicrafts, and distinctive mementos are available. Remember to sample the delectable Himachali cuisine at one of the numerous eateries situated along the route.

3. The Jakhu Temple:  Proceed to the temple, which is devoted to Lord Hanuman. The enormous statue of Hanuman, which is towering and offers breathtaking views of the town, is the main attraction during our visit.

4. Shimla Historical  Walks:  Take one of the historical walks to discover more about Shimla's colonial past if you're interested in history and architecture. These guided tours provide information on the town's architectural treasures and rich history.

Manali: Adventure's Entrance

We travel to Manali, a popular destination for adventure seekers, from Shimla. Beautiful views of snow-capped peaks, meandering rivers, and lush woods may be seen during the route from Shimla to Manali.

1. Solang Valley: Go straight to Solang Valley if you're looking for adventure. During the winter, this location becomes a snowy paradise with skiing and snowboarding available. It's a zorbing and paragliding haven in the summer.

2. Rohtang Pass: Lahaul and Spiti Valley can be accessed by Rohtang Pass. Although the travel is difficult, the breathtaking scenery makes it worthwhile. The delight of playing in the snow and the pass's snow-covered summits are both well-known attractions.

3. Old Manali:  An idyllic, bohemian village with a unique appeal, Old Manali is located across the Beas River. Discover its markets, quaint cafes, and winding roads. Artists and hikers alike find refuge there.

4. Manali Wildlife  Sanctuary: A trip to the Manali Wildlife Sanctuary is essential for those who enjoy the outdoors. The Himalayan region is home to a variety of bird species, brown bears, and leopards, among other wildlife.

Rafting the Beas River in Kullu

Kullu, often known as the "Valley of Gods," is easily reached by car from Manali. This charming valley is well-known for its breathtaking scenery and extensive cultural history.

McLeodganj and Dharamshala: The Tibetan Connection

Travelling north, you will arrive in Dharamshala and McLeodganj, the residence of the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader.

1. The Tsuglagkhang  Complex:  This is McLeodganj's central attraction. It is home to the Dalai Lama's palace, Namgyal Monastery, and the Tibet Museum, which offers insightful information on Tibetan history and culture.

We now head into the quiet and isolated area of Kinnaur, leaving behind the well-known tourist attractions.

Spiti Valley: The Serene Highlands

Our last stop is the high-altitude desert of Spiti Valley, which is situated within the Himalayan rain shadow. It's a place of stark beauty and bizarre sceneries.

1. Key Monastery:  Begin your journey across Spiti with a visit to the well-known Key Monastery, a hilltop Tibetan Buddhist centre. This location offers very breathtaking panoramic views.

2. Chandratal Lake:  Often referred to as the "Lake of the Moon," Chandratal is an immaculate lake at a high elevation. With its numerous river crossings and winding roads, the trip to the lake is an experience in and of itself.

Shimla – A Complete Travel Guide & Itinerary

shimla

If one was to prepare a list of the favorite and most visited tourist destinations of our country, Shimla will definitely be at the top of that list. This small hill town has enjoyed the status of being the favored one for almost 2 centuries now. British arrived here in the early 1800s and liked the place so much that they declared it as their summer capital in 1864. They even took all the hassle of building a railroad to Shimla.

The British left a long time ago but Shimla still continues to enjoy the same status. The beauty of this place is no less than it was a century ago, and still attracts thousands of tourists each year from all parts of the country.

If you too were thinking of visiting Shimla in the near future, then in this article I will provide some quick tips on how to plan a trip to Shimla. Your final travel plan will of course depend on several factors like how you are traveling; how many days you have in hand; the time of your trip but I will add a few things in this article which will remain the same irrespective of all these.

Quick Navigation

About Shimla

Shimla, also known as Simla, is the capital and the largest city of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It gets its name from Shyamala Mata, an incarnation of the goddess Kali. A temple, dedicated to the goddess and named Kali Bari temple, is situated near the Ridge.

The town is located at 2,276 meters (7,467 ft) and is fondly called the ‘queen of the hills’. Before independence, it served as the summer capital of British India. After independence, it became the capital of Punjab and then finally the capital of Himachal Pradesh after the state came into existence.

Reasons to visit Shimla

What makes Shimla a desired destination for thousands of people however is because it is perfect for all kinds of vacations. From honeymooners to adventure seekers to families, the city serves as a charming retreat to a large number of people. The enchanting beauty of this hill station has attracted countless filmmakers and cinematographers. This erstwhile summer capital of the British, still retains its colonial-era charm through its spectacular historical churches and institutes, like Christ Church, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, and many more.

It is very well connected by road so getting here is not a problem. You never really go too remote and the famous market of Shimla is perfect for an evening of shopping around. Every modern-day facility is available here including good hospitals in case a medical emergency came up. All cell phone networks work in Shimla so you remain connected with your family and friends all the time.

Another great reason is the vast choice of accommodation choices available. No matter what your budget is, you will easily find a place to stay in Shimla. While the overall altitude of the city is enough to make it snow here, you never really climb up to a level where it becomes uncomfortable; or where you run a risk of suffering from acute mountain sickness. In short, it is a perfect destination to go to with family and also for a quick weekend getaway with friends.

how to reach shimla

How to Reach Shimla

Reaching Shimla will really be the easiest part of your vacation here. The city is very well connected and you can reach either by road, air or train, depending on your own preference.

How to reach Shimla by Road

Let us first take a look at how you can reach Shimla if you were traveling by your own car or motorcycle. For the sake of explaining the route, I will assume that you were starting from Delhi. Even if you were coming from a different city though, only the journey till Chandigarh may change. The rest of the details will still apply.

Starting from Delhi, the route of the journey will be as mentioned below.

Delhi  – Panipat – Karnal – Ambala – Zirakpur – Panchkula – Kalka – Kandaghat – Shoghi – Shimla

The total travel time will be about 7-8 hours, depending on your speed and breaks. From Delhi, you will follow NH1 until Chandigarh. Do not enter the city though. Just before Chandigarh, turn right towards Kalka on Himalayan Expressway and follow the uphill road to Shimla.

This entire road remains in good condition all year. There is some road widening work happening between Kalka and Shimla due to which you may encounter some slow traffic. Once this work is completed, the entire road to Shimla will be a 4 lane highway, can you believe it?

How to reach Shimla by Bus

Shimla is very well connected by a regular bus service. There are daily buses available from almost all major cities in North India and finding one will be really easy. HRTC and HPTDC operate daily buses from Shimla to places like Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, etc, and vice versa. Other state transport agencies as well as private travel companies also provide regular buses. Just do a Google search and you will get plenty of options.

If you were coming from Delhi, you can board an overnight air-conditioned luxury bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, or may even catch a daytime bus.

How to reach Shimla by Train

An even fun and better way however will be to get here by Train. Yes, I am referring to the famous toy. You can reach Kalka by either a train from Delhi or Chandigarh and then board the Toy Train. The entire journey is on a narrow-gauge rail track, covering a distance of 96 kilometers in about 7 hours. For more details, please take a look at How to Plan a trip by Shimla Kalka Train .

If you do not want to travel by this train, you can reach Chandigarh instead. From there, either board a Bus or hire a private taxi.

how to reach shimla

How to reach Shimla by Flight

Jubarhati, which is about 23 kilometers from the town, is the nearest airport to Shimla. There are regular flights going from Jubarhatti to Chandigarh and Delhi.

Other than Jubarhatti, Chandigarh is the next nearest airport.

Best way to reach Shimla

The best way to reach Shimla would be to travel by your own vehicle; either by a motorcycle or Car. The condition of the road, as I mentioned, is very good and it takes you through some really stunning landscape. You can take as many breaks as you want, travel at your own pace and enjoy the scenery.

What to See in Shimla

Shimla has a long list of tourist attractions. You can spend days here and still not be done with it all. Some places are right in the town whereas some others are at a little distance, like Kufri. If you drove a little further, you can even visit places like Narkanda and Thanedar , that are equally beautiful and even quieter than the main town.

I have covered the topic of sightseeing in a different article, Complete List of Tourist Attractions in Shimla and its Vicinity , that I will urge you to read. Adding all of these details here on this one page would have just rendered this article endless.

Places to visit in Shimla

But for a brief summary, below are some of the best places you can visit during your trip.

  • Mall Road: Main shopping street is known as “The Mall” or “Mall Road”. It is more or less the center of all activity here and runs as the town’s lifeline. Cafes, restaurants, and social hangouts on Mall Road are especially popular with locals and tourists alike.
  • Christ Church: It is the second oldest church in Northern India, dating back to 1857. Situated on The Ridge, it is one of the prominent landmarks of Shimla and a fine display of neo-Gothic architecture.
  • Scandal Point: It is known so because this is where the Maharaja of Patiala had eloped with the daughter of the British Viceroy. Back then, it was the scandal of the highest order.
  • Jakhu Hill: The highest peak around Shimla, at a height of 8,000 ft, offering a magnificent view of the valley around.
  • Shimla State Museum: Full of several ancient artifacts displaying the cultural wealth of Himachal Pradesh
  • Statue of Lord Hanuman at Jakhu Hill: This 108 feet tall statue stands at a height of 8,500 ft above sea level.
  • Viceregal Lodge: Dating back to 1888, this lodge was built by British architect Henry Irwin and served as the residence of the British Viceroy of India
  • Rothney Castle: Rothney Castle was the home of Allan Octavian Hume, the British civil servant who founded the Congress in 1885

Things to do in Shimla

Other than visiting all of the places mentioned above, here is a list of some other activities that you may indulge yourself in while visiting Shimla. I am not including things like hiring a cab and drive an hour to visit a nearby place, but things that you can do while staying in the town itself.

Take a Walk on The Ridge:  The ridge is an area near Jhaku Hill and the Observatory. This is the place where Shimla’s fairs, festivals, and functions are held. Tourists come here to see several colonial-style buildings, a church, a library, and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

Trek to Jhaku Hill:  At a height of 2,455 meters, the top of Jhaku hill offers a mesmerizing view of Shimla and the entire Shivalik range around. It is a fun trek of about 30 minutes to the top through lush forest terrain.

Shop at Mall Road:  While you are in Shimla, do not forget to do some shopping at the famous Mall road and buy yourself some souvenirs.

Ride the Toy Train: Take a ride in the famous Toy train of Shimla. It is a journey of 96 kilometers that will take you over 864 bridges and 102 tunnels, including the longest one at Barog. Scenic vistas will accompany you throughout the journey and you will have a hard time to stop clicking your camera.

Weather of Shimla

The weather in Shimla is mostly cool throughout the year. The summers can be moderately warm but winters will be extremely cold. During the summer, the temperature will fluctuate between 10°C to 28°C. The average temperature during winter is 10°C to 0°C, but the record low temperature is −12°C.

Between late December to early February, Shimla receives plenty of snow each year and turns into a winter wonderland. Sometimes even the roads from Shimla to Mashobra or Narkanda can get blocked due to all the snow on the road. The night temperature in these months will drop close to 0°C.

The snow is mostly all gone by March, except for at the top of the distant peaks. April marks the beginning of the spring season and until the end of summer in June, Shimla receives the majority of tourists each year. People reach here to escape the scorching heat of the plains. But at this time, even Shimla can feel pretty hot and you may need to switch on the AC in your hotel room. The day temperature can go even beyond 30°C.

The months of July and August are of monsoon. Even though the scenic beauty at this time is at its best, it is not a safe time to visit anywhere in the hills. Shimla receives a lot of rain each year. Sometimes it can rain non-stop for days, causing landslides and making a trip very risky.

Also read: Top 10 Less Visited Places of Himachal

Monsoon departs in the month of September but leaves behind plenty of greenery. Autumn arrives in October and all that was green in September now turns Orange. November is mostly a dry month when the winter settles in once again and the average temperature drops close to 10°C.

Best time to Visit Shimla

Answer to this question will depend on whether you are planning a winter trip or in the months of summer; and what exactly do you seek. On an overall basis, the months from March to June are considered the best time to visit Shimla. This is the time when the weather is neither too cold nor hot. The temperature will range between 10°C to 28°C and both days and nights will be pleasant.

If you were however planning a winter trip and wanted to see plenty of snow, then the months of January and February will be the best time to visit here. The temperature however at this time can dip as low as −4 °C. So you must carry plenty of woolens, jackets and warm clothes. Chances of snowfall are more in January than February.

If you, however, would like to witness the lush green valleys, the months of July, August and September would be the best time. This is the time when the monsoon is either in the valley or has just passed and breathes in life to the fauna and flora of the region.

Please be advised that the rainy season also brings in the risk of incessant rains and landslides as a result. You may even get restricted to your hotel room completely if it rained non-stop.

When to go to Shimla

Below is a breakdown of the best time to go to Shimla for different kinds of trips.

  • Best time to visit Shimla for Apples: The apple harvesting season begins in mid-July and ends in August.
  • Best time to visit Shimla by Toy Train: The toy train remains functional for all 12 months so it is only a question of when is it convenient for you. Please take a look at How to Plan a Trip in Shimla Kalka Toy train for more details.
  • Best time to visit Shimla for Snow: A trip in January or February will be best if you want to see snow.
  • Best time to visit Shimla for Honeymoon: If you were planning your honeymoon, January to March will be the best time. September and October will be the next best months.
  • Best time to visit Shimla for Snowfall: Your chances of catching a snowfall are best between late December to early February. It can snow in late February or early  March as well but chances are less.
  • Best time to visit Shimla with Family: The months from March to June are best for a family trip.
  • Best Month to visit Shimla: September, in my opinion, is the best month to visit Shimla. For a winter trip, January will be the best.
  • Best season to visit Shimla India: Spring and post-monsoon are the best seasons to visit Shimla.

Where to Stay in Shimla

Shimla is one of the most visited hill stations in our country which means that no matter which month you arrive here in, finding a place to stay will not be a problem at all. Hotels here are available in every range, from luxury 5-star resorts to budgeted guest houses. You can easily find a room here for as low as Rs. 700 per night. As a matter of fact, the moment you enter Shimla, you will have agents chasing you for a good hotel deal.

Whether or not to book in advance depends upon your discretion but is not required. If you have already decided on a hotel and know where you want to stay, you may book. If you are on a budget or not sure of the hotel, then best would be to reach Shimla, find a hotel per your liking and negotiate an on the spot deal.

Below is a list of items that you should be packing for your trip.

If visiting in summer, pack light cotton clothes for the day as the sun is quite strong. The temperature in the evening however may drop a bit so pack a light jacket as well.

If visiting Shimla in the winter, carry woolens, thermals, and a heavy jacket. To keep warm when it snows, boots, gloves, a cap, and muffler are essential.

If visiting during the monsoon season or in September, you should pack clothes that can dry faster, like polyester. If it was not inconvenient, you should also pack an umbrella or a poncho.

Itinerary for Shimla

How your trip finally plans out will completely depend on how you were traveling and the number of days in hand. But I will suggest a few different plans that you can follow, covering Shimla and its nearby areas.

I will suggest the itinerary assuming that you were starting from Delhi. Even if you were coming from a different city though, only the part about traveling to and from Delhi will change. The rest of the details will still apply.

3 Days Itinerary Shimla Trip Itinerary

  • Day 1 – Delhi to Shimla
  • Day 2 – Spend the day sightseeing in Shimla. Visit Jakhu Temple, Christ Church, The Ridge, and Mall Road. Take a drive towards Kufri
  • Day 3 – Return to Delhi

4 Days Itinerary

  • Day 2 – Spend the day sightseeing in Shimla. Visit Jakhu Temple, Christ Church, The Ridge, and Mall Road.
  • Day 3 – Take a drive towards Narkanda. On the way, visit places like Mashobra and Kufri. See Hatu Temple in Narkanda.
  • Day 4 – Return to Delhi

5 Days Plan

  • Day 2 – Take a walk on the Ride road. Later, visit Jakhu Temple and Christ Church. Spend the evening at Mall Road.
  • Day 4 – This day can be planned in 3 ways. Either you can spend it in Shimla just relaxing and enjoying the views. Or you can take a drive to the nearby Chail which is another great tourist attraction. The third way is to enjoy a ride in the Toy Train.
  • Day 5 – Return to Delhi

By Public Transport

The above plans were for someone traveling by their own vehicle. If you were coming by a Bus, below is how you can plan your journey.

  • Day 0 – Board an overnight bus for Shimla. In Delhi, you can get it from ISBT Kashmere Gate.
  • Day 2 & 3 – Spend the next 2 days in the town itself. Visit all of the local attractions in Shimla, eat out, and do some shopping.
  • Day 4 – Board the toy train and reach Kalka. From Kalka, reach Chandigarh Bus stand and find a Bus for your hometown. If you have no interest in the toy train, then find a Bus for back to your hometown from Shimla itself.

Another way you can plan this journey is by doing it the other way around.

  • Day 0 – Board a Bus late in the evening that can drop you at either Shimla or Kalka by the morning the next day.
  • Day 1 – Board the morning toy train for Shimla from Kalka. Reach Shimla and check into a hotel.
  • Day 2 & 3 – Spend the next 2 days sightseeing in Shimla.
  • Day 4 – Return to Delhi by Bus.

Mobile Network in Shimla and Data Connectivity

BSNL has the widest network coverage in Himachal but in Shimla, every cellphone will work fine. Irrespective of which network you were on, you will get reception and 4G data.

If I was to name one, I will say that Airtel and Jio are best mobile network in Shimla on an overall basis.  BSNL has a good network everywhere but data connectivity can be a little poor at times.

Hospital / Medical Assistance

Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and as such, it has good and large hospitals, capable of handling all kinds of medical emergencies. If you need medical assistance, finding it in Shimla will not be difficult at all.

But with that being said, I will strongly recommend carrying a few basic medicines like for flu, upset stomach, fever, body ache, and pain relief spray.

Petrol Pump / Mechanics

There are petrol pumps and mechanics available in Shimla. In fact, car and motorcycle companies have authorized service stations here so it will not be a problem at all.

Banks / ATMs

All major banks have their branches and ATMs in Shimla. I have been in Shimla on numerous occasions and have never had any trouble getting cash at any of the ATMs.

What & Where to Eat

Being a popular tourist destination, Shimla has an endless list of restaurants serving all kinds of dishes. Out here, you can try local Himachali food, North & South Indian, Chinese, Italian, and pretty much everything.

Where you eat will surely depend on where you were. Your breakfast will be at your hotel and lunch at a restaurant depending on your sightseeing plan. But for dinner, I will suggest that you go to Mall Road and try any of the restaurants there per your liking.

Shopping in Shimla

There are four places where you can try shopping. The first one is the Mall road, the heart of all the action and activity. The second and cheaper option is the Tibetan Market where you can negotiate for good deals on clothes.

An even cheaper place is the Lower Bazaar but is more for buying day to day commodities rather than shopping.

If you want to buy some decorative items, you should try Lakkar Bazaar.

Other than these 4 places, the Himachal Emporium is also a good place to buy some local handicraft items.

My favorite of all these is the Lakkar Bazaar. It is a great place to pick up some souvenirs for the trip. You can try Mall road as well but I found it better for eating than shopping.

lakkar bazaar

Shimla Road Condition

The entire stretch between Delhi to Shimla is a smooth run. Both NH1 between Delhi and Chandigarh and then NH22 between Chandigarh and Shimla remain in excellent condition throughout the year. The only problem on this stretch earlier was the narrow roads and traffic of Kala but with Himalayan Expressway being now operational, the complete journey has turned into bliss.

At the time of writing this article, there is road widening work ongoing between Kalka and Shimla so expect some slow traffic at places. But upon completing, this entire road will turn into a 4 lane highway.

The roads from Shimla to other places like Kufri, Fagu and Narkanda are also very smooth.

Best Vehicle

There is really no best vehicle as such. You will find the locals here driving around Maruti hatchbacks and even scooters. The only thing needed is that your vehicle is well maintained and capable of handling the ups and downs of the mountain roads. In fact, you will find most of the taxi drivers using a Maruti Alto for showing the tourists around.

Below are some most commonly asked questions about Shimla.

When will Shimla Open?

Shimla remains open for tourism throughout the year and flaunts different colors in every season. While the months of June till September will present you with lush green and well-blossomed valleys; January and February will cover Shimla under a thick sheet of white.

Is Shimla Worth Visiting?

Yes, Shimla is definitely worth visiting and there is plenty to see here. It is not only nature lovers but also people with an interest in history and architecture that will be pleased after a trip to this historic hill town.

When does it Snow in Shimla?

It snows in Shimla between late December to early February.

I hope the information above on planning a trip to Shimla was of help. If you have any further questions; please feel free to ask in the comments section below, or at our Community Forum ; and I will be glad to answer.

Go by the Toy Train only if you want to enjoy the ride and have patience to sit in the slow moving train for long hours. Otherwise, it would be better to go by car. Scenery will remain the same either way.

Jars of walleye eggs

Riverdale , ND 58565 United States

Volunteer Position Overview

About this position.

Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery is one of the largest U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hatcheries in the Nation. We raise a wide variety of fish species including walleye, Northern pike, trout, Chinook salmon, paddlefish, muskie, burbot, the endangered Pallid sturgeon, and Shovelnose sturgeon. The hatchery is located directly below Lake Sakakawea on the banks of the Missouri River. If you enjoy outdoor recreation, plenty of opportunities exist in this area, including fishing, boating, birding, hiking, camping, hunting...it is all right here!

The hatchery staff relies on volunteers to conduct informative tours of the hatchery to our visitors. Tour groups range from a few visitors to bus loads of school kids anxious to see and learn about the hatchery. We like to involve our volunteers wherever possible which may be spawning fish, caring for trout and managing aquariums. We work with the volunteers to find a schedule that meets the needs of the visitor center. The Visitor Center is open from 9:00-3:30 M-F, 10:00-3:00 Sat-Sun & Holidays.

Fish Production  - Early Spring marks the beginning of the cycle of life for many of our native fishes; Northern Pike and Walleye. The fishery biologists capture the adult fish and they are stripped of eggs and milt at the shore site. The eggs are brought to the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery where they are incubated in special hatching jars. The newly hatched fry emerge from the eggs in about two weeks. It will be another week before the fry are able to swim or feed. The ‘swim-up’ fry spend the last month of their stay at the hatchery in outdoor ponds which have an abundance of zooplankton, the food necessary to provide for the rapid growth. At the month’s end, the fry are now called fingerlings and ready for stocking into area lakes. Sturgeon are spawned in late June. Coldwater species, trout and salmon, are at the station year-around, however if you visit the station in October, you will be able to witness the annual migration of chinook salmon up the hatchery's effluent stream and watch as eggs are collected from these awesome fish.

Location in ND  - The Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery is located in central North Dakota, an hour’s drive from Minot or Bismarck. You will only be a couple miles from Riverdale and Pick City which have outstanding some of the best restaurant's but you will need to drive about 30 miles for groceries, a drug stores, clinics and hardware stores,

Secret Service Director Tours RNC Sites Ahead of Security Briefing

MILWAUKEE – On June 6, U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle met with public safety professionals from the FBI, Milwaukee Police Department, Milwaukee Fire Department and other experts from throughout the region to discuss the security plan for the 2024 Republican National Convention. The meeting occurred after Director Cheatle toured sites slated for the 2024 RNC, which runs from July 15-18 in Milwaukee. The Fiserv Forum, Baird Center, and Panther Arena were part of the visit, which included security briefings from Secret Service personnel and other public safety partners. Following the site visits, Director Cheatle met with FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael Hensle, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey B. Norman, Fire Chief Aaron Lipski and other 2024 RNC executive steering committee members. The security plan for National Special Security Events, to include the 2024 RNC, is developed and approved through this committee, which is made up of representatives from supporting federal, state, and local agencies. As part of this process, subcommittees that focus on a particular area of the overall security plan are also formed, including traffic management, business and community impact, and maritime security. These subcommittees provide frequent updates and briefings to the executive steering committee.  “The Secret Service collaborates with our local counterparts for every protective visit, investigation, and large event,” said Director Cheatle. “This expert teamwork will be on full display throughout the Republican National Convention. I want to thank our federal, state, and local partners for their work over this last year. I am confident in the plan being developed and am looking forward to a safe and secure convention.”

“The Milwaukee Police Department is grateful for the positive collaboration we have with all of our law enforcement partners at all levels of government, including the United States Secret Service. Through these partnerships and planning efforts, we look forward to keeping all of Milwaukee safe during the RNC,” Milwaukee Police Chief Norman said.

“The Milwaukee Fire Department holds its responsibility to provide fire suppression, emergency medical services, specialized and technical rescue, and humanitarian services to ALL persons within the City of Milwaukee. We welcome and celebrate the Republican National Convention coming to Milwaukee. A critical key to the success of our RNC mission is aggressive and comprehensive pre-planning of resource needs, asset assignments, training, and communication pathway mapping. I can say that we have rarely experienced the level of sincere integration as we have with the United States Secret Service leadership team and Milwaukee Police Department in ensuring the safety of both RNC participants and Milwaukeeans alike during the RNC,” Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski said. The 2024 RNC is the Secret Service’s 78th National Special Security Event. The agency is entrusted with planning, coordinating, and implementing security operations for NSSEs and has a proven track record since 1998. Other notable examples of these high-profile events include the U.N. General Assembly, the State of the Union Address, and presidential inaugurations. For more information regarding the public safety efforts ahead of the 2024 Republican National Convention, please visit the City of Milwaukee’s website at https://city.milwaukee.gov/RNC

Grayson Murray remembered as caring, thoughtful friend in funeral service

Grayson Murray was already well under par when he reached the 13th tee at Carolina Country Club a few weeks ago. One of two N.C. State golfers in the group, Cade McLaughlin, had just hit his tee shot to 2 feet on the 195-yard par 3. The college kid didn’t say anything, but there was a discernable bounce in his step after hitting an impressive shot in front of a two-time PGA TOUR winner.

Then Murray stepped up to the tee. He sent his shot airborne, watched it bounce twice and then saw it fall in the hole.

“Body language spoke volumes. ‘This is how the pros do it.’ It was amazing that it was his 17th hole-in-one,” said Dave Owen, a friend of Murray’s who also was in the group. “But after high-fives and hugs, it was such an amazing time to watch his interaction with these two younger guys. His attitude that day, his demeanor, was humble. His words were kind. His attention to the guys’ questions was so engaged. He answered every question with both joy and detail.

“And little did I know it would be the last time I ever spoke in-person to him or gave him a hug.”

Owen, the pastor of Providence Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, first met Murray a dozen years ago. They met in a Starbucks to discuss the big questions of life. “It was intense and loaded with questions that wouldn’t be answered for about another 10 years,” Owen recalled.

They reconnected a year ago, while Murray was waiting to hit during a Korn Ferry Tour event in Raleigh. When he spotted Owen spectating from outside the ropes, Murray walked over and gave him a hug. Their friendship grew as texts and calls followed. They prayed together and played golf together. Owen quickly recognized a changed man, one who was very different than the college student he’d first met in a coffee shop.

“I knew something had radically changed. I knew darkness, depression, addictions had been a theme and real struggles, but there was light in his eyes and hope in his voice and peace in his heart,” Owen said. “There had been rehab and tools to help, but there was something seemingly deeper than some of those tools. Grayson had encountered the truth of who Jesus Christ was and what Christ had accomplished for him.”

Owen delivered those words Monday at Murray’s funeral in Providence Church. Murray, the two-time PGA TOUR winner, died at age 30 on May 25. He was remembered Monday as a caring and thoughtful friend whose life was on an upward trajectory before he died by suicide.

Country music star Jake Owen, who called his friendship with Murray “one of the great gifts I was ever given in my life,” played the hymn “How Great Thou Art.” PGA TOUR players Chesson Hadley and Webb Simpson delivered remembrances via video. The Carolina Hurricanes’ Jacob Slavin, a friend of Murray, also spoke and delivered a prayer at Monday’s service.

“He was in full stride,” said Murray’s longtime swing coach, Ted Kiegiel, said of Murray. “He was in full stride. Everything was in alignment in his life.”

Murray had gotten sober, gotten in shape, gotten engaged and regained his PGA TOUR card. He earned his second PGA TOUR title in January at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

“He burned the brightest for those 12 months that sobriety was part of his life,” Kiegiel said.

Murray was an intense competitor. He was remembered as punctual and honest, but sobriety helped him use that intensity to draw people in instead of pushing them away. Kiegiel remembered how at this year’s Masters, Murray’s first time competing at Augusta National, Murray drove all the way down Magnolia Lane each day instead of making a quick right into the player parking lot. The longer route allowed his friends and family to savor one of golf’s most famous drives.

“He wanted his family to have the full treatment every day,” Kiegiel said.

When Murray thought he had missed the cut, he stopped the car during that last drive down the famed lane and asked, “Do you know what the best part of this week was?” His family waited in anticipation for the answer. He didn’t cite seeing Amen Corner or the fulfillment of a childhood dream.

“The best day was Wednesday, spending the day with Christiana,” his fiancée, Murray said, according to Kiegiel. She caddied for him in the Par-3 Contest and hit tee shots and putts, to the delight of the patrons.

One of Murray’s longtime friends, Austin, remembered traveling to the Bahamas with Murray this fall, a sober celebration of his 30th birthday. “It was one of the first times I saw him smile ear-to-ear in some time. That was the Grayson I knew.”

He remembered Murray, a passionate Carolina Hurricanes fan, sounding the siren that precedes the start of the team’s games. He would take pictures and sign autographs for anyone who asked. “No was never an answer,” Austin said.

He closed his speech with words of encouragement, asking people to remember that “words can be hurtful. They also can be inspiring.”

“I hope you seek help in times of need,” he told those gathered.

Murray was remembered for having the courage to speak about his weaknesses. “He knew deep down that it was a way to continue to heal and to help others,” Owen said.

He said Murray was “a new man with a heavy history, a hard past but a bright future.”

That man was remembered Monday.

Jack Nicklaus makes 16th hole at Memorial more fair; Rob Lowe channels Steve Young

tour service in shimla

A familiar voice rang out as Jack and Barbara Nicklaus wheeled their golf cart past the 17th tee Wednesday at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

“Love No. 16,” Matt Kuchar yelled from No. 17 tee.

Nicklaus waved thanks and kept driving, presumably satisfied that at least one PGA Tour player was giving his redesign of the maligned par-3 a thumb’s-up.

Not all players were as enthusiastic with their praise.

“It’s better than it was. Put it that way,” said Jordan Spieth, one of several players who met with Nicklaus after the 2023 Memorial Tournament to share their misgivings.

If Nicklaus was looking for a universal ringing endorsement of his changes, well, professional golfers seldom are 100% thrilled when confronted with a challenging hole.

And No. 16 is dastardly, forcing right-handed players to draw the ball – lefties must fade it – 218 yards into a narrow green with water on the left and a bunker back right. It has undergone several transformations through the years, but none has satisfied everyone.

No hole in the 49-year history of the Memorial Tournament has been criticized by players like the 16th, which took heat in the early days of the event when George Archer complained that no par 3 should be longer than 200 yards.

The complaints reached another level last year when several players took dead aim at the hole.

“It’s a stupid hole,” Westerville resident Jason Day said, echoing the sentiments of many.

Nicklaus took the feedback to heart , changing the hole by moving the tee about 30 yards to the right, which took more of the greenside pond out of play. More significantly, he removed a bunker just to the right of the green, replacing it with a grassy slope.

What hasn’t changed is the firmness of the green, which is difficult to hold when tee shots land past the first 20 feet. That is after Nicklaus reshaped the putting surface in 2021 to help keep balls from bouncing off the green even on good shots.

“I’ve always really liked the hole,” Sahith Theegala said, before shooting holes in it. “But there does come a point where you’re hitting a shot and you feel you have no chance of holding the green, whether you hit a good shot or a bad shot, there needs to be a change made. I’ve landed a few balls like four paces on, in the middle of the green, and they went over the back of the green.”

The recent alterations Nicklaus made won’t change that, Theegala said.

“But because the angle changed if you hit a draw in there you can land it on the green and get one close, whereas before the angle was too straight on to be able to do that,” he said. “You’re going to see some guys hit some pretty big draws into the hole, taking less club, just because that bailout area front right is pretty easy now. Before, you pretty much chalk it up to a 4 and move on. It’s easier and a better hole now.”

Collin Morikawa explained that moving the tee to straighten the hole actually has less impact than Nicklaus removing the front-right bunker.

“The bunker was never bad, but it’s not like you wanted to be in it,” he said. “The little runoff on the side isn’t as drastic as I thought it would be, so you could actually putt it or chip it across the green. It’s still a tough tee shot, don’t get me wrong. You’re still hitting 7-iron, 6-iron, 5-iron, depending on the wind, to a small, narrow green that doesn’t have a lot of depth.”

Xander Schauffele agreed with Morikawa that removing the bunker makes the 16th more gettable.

“It’s more fair now,” he said. “Taking that bunker out allows you to be as defensive as you would like, without sort of laying up with a 50-yard pitch shot. You’re going to see a lot of balls end up in that little area, especially those front two pins.”

Max Moldovan pressed into marker service

Max Moldovan , who last week completed his career at Ohio State, will tee it up early at the Memorial as a non-competing marker who heads out at 7:40 a.m. with PGA Tour player Davis Thompson.

A marker plays when there is an uneven number of players in the field, going off in the first group of the day in a twosome to keep the pros scorecard and provide company and pace for the round. He does not post a score.

Moldovan finished his OSU career with a 71.25 scoring average, lowest in program history. He finished second alternate at Monday’s U.S. Open qualifier in Springfield, Ohio, and waits to see if a spot opens in next week’s national championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Rob Lowe mistaken for Steve Young

As he approached the first tee, actor Rob Lowe suddenly turned into a Hall of Fame quarterback. At least that’s how the starter who announced player names at the Workday Golden Bear pro-am saw it.

“This way, Steve,” the starter said, mistaking Lowe for former NFL quarterback Steve Young.

Despite sharing some facial resemblance, Lowe is 5 feet 10 and probably 160 pounds. Young is 6-2, 216.

Lowe teamed with defending Memorial champion Viktor Hovland on the first nine holes and Nick Taylor on the back.

Chris Pratt, meanwhile, did not get mistaken for Star Lord, his character in the “Guardian of the Galaxy” and “Avengers” movies. But the actor did receive one of the loudest cheers of the day after sinking a long putt at 16. He played with Rory McIlroy on the front, Jason Day on the back and Peyton Manning for all 18 holes.

Manning has become a Memorial pro-am regular, which probably explains why he instinctively knew which flavor of “famous Muirfield Village” milkshake to order after his round.

“Buckeye,” he said to the milkshake maker.
