Lebanon Tours

Our Lebanon tours take a deep dive into this small but adventurous Mediterranean country that offers a goldmine of historic sites to visit - although it has a turbulent history, it now makes a great place to visit, either in its own right or as part of a longer Middle East holiday itinerary.

At Encounters Travel our Lebanon tours include many places of interest such as the capital city Beirut, the impressive Roman remains of Baalbek, the old souks in Tripoli, and the mosaic streets and the massive Roman hippodrome in Tyre.

More active pursuits include scuba diving, trekking and skiing - making a Lebanon tour the ultimate vacation!

Our Lebanon tours offer a range of sites to see and activities to do

Our Lebanon tours usually start in its modern capital city of Beirut, which is the perfect base to explore Lebanon from and is regarded as one of the liveliest cities in the world - with excellent restaurants, theatres, pubs and nightlife. From here, it's easy to make excursions into the surrounding countryside.

To the north, the coastal city of Tripoli is famous for its sweets and traditional olive oil-based soap, which can be bought in its wonderful old covered souks.

Inland lies the well-preserved Roman remains at Baalbek, with the colossal temple of Bacchus as the main attraction.

To the south, scuba diving and snorkelling in the waters around the ancient city of Tyre, where divers can explore interesting underwater archaeological ruins - this is a popular option among travellers on a Lebanon tour. The city is also home to one of the largest Roman hippodromes ever discovered.

For more active options, there is plenty of great scuba diving and snorkelling along the miles of the Mediterranean coast, along with other popular water sports.

Inland in the mountains, there is excellent walking and skiing, with several great ski resorts available.

Don't hesitate to contact us if you're looking for something more private, then our escorted Lebanon tours are something to consider.

If you're looking for travel inspiration, head over to our blog which provides excellent insight into our many travel destinations.

Trip booked through Groupon at a Great offer price - Encounters was nothing but professional from the start. I even purchased insurance - extra days and got the best flights from my local airport- Great experience

When a single women in her 50's, traveling from the US to Egypt, stumbles across a website offering a tour, and then they make her feel totaling comfortable about every step of the process, you know you've hit a homerun!

I have dealt with Anthony Horrobin on a number of occasions and it is like talking to an old friend on the phone. Anthony is super-efficient and will always go the extra mile to create the perfect trip.

This is our first travel through Encounters Travel and so far the arrangement is working very well. Our travel is not until April 2017 so I am more than hopeful all will continue to run as smoothly as it has so far.

I purchased my rid tour as part of a group coupon. Is obituary hesitant but my tour was great. The staff at Encounters were professional and helpful. I had a lot of questions but no one made me feel like a pest. Good experience. I always wanted to go to Morocco and I finally got to go last September. I'm glad I chose this tour group. They were professional and attentive. Good times!

Lebanon Country Guide

Lebanon Country Guide Flag

Time: GMT+3 Dial Code: +961 Area: 10 452 km2 Elevation: Lebanon's highest point is Qurnat as Sawda' 3,088 m (10,131 ft) and its lowest point is the Mediterranean Sea 0 m (0 ft). Population: 6,830,780 Capital: Beirut Government: Semi-presidential parliamentary democratic republic Language: Lebanese

Tied to its turbulent history, Lebanon sometimes sees very few travellers flocking to its beauty and welcoming locals – however, one must know that visiting Lebanon is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have as a traveller. Lebanon is filled with both ancient and modern charms – the country has undergone a rebirth in recent years, presenting visitors with a country that enjoys the rich benefits if its past and its bustling future. Hugging an endless blue coastline on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, this small country of just 3.7 million has far more to offer than its size and population suggests. Lebanon's capital of cool, Beirut, is most likely to be your first stop - labelled everything from 'The Paris of the Middle East' to 'the party capital of the Arab world' and the 'the adrenalin sports capital of the Middle East', it won't be long before you realise why Beirut was once one of the world's most fashionable travel destinations. Away from the chic buzz of its thriving cities, Lebanon’s historic past can be seen in its crusader castles and the crumbling ruins of the seventh-century Umayyad city of Aanjar. Lebanon is home to both skiing and sun, a mostly liberal population, and bars and nightclubs that rival those found in Europe, it is the complete opposite of what most people imagine the Middle East to be. Across the mountains of the east, through the terraced hills of the Shuf region and down to the beaches of the western coastline, Lebanon is easily recognized as a vibrant and modern country perfect for an extraordinary adventure. Coolly combining everything the ancient and new world has to offer, Lebanon is a country that startles as much as it amazes.

  • Explore the Ruins of Baalbek - that has origins which date back to the Phoenician period, around 300 BC.
  • Visit Byblos is one of the oldest cities in the Middle East and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Visit the Qadisha Valley - which is home to numerous isolated rock-cut monasteries and churches.
  • The internet is good in Lebanon. You can buy SIM cards for your phone from the airport or one of many retailers all over Lebanon.
  • The best time to visit Lebanon would be from April to December. Most of the rain falls during the months of December to March.
  • Tipping is usually 10% of the bill, generally for waiters rather than taxi drivers. You can still tip a taxi driver but of course it's less expected of you.

A tour bus backed into a totem pole in downtown Juneau, but it’s still standing

June 4, 2024 by Yvonne Krumrey, KTOO

tour bus in lebanon

Last week, an Alaska Coach Tours bus backed into a totem pole at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum.

The pole, one of the oldest in downtown Juneau, has a small dent now. City engineers have made sure that it’s still stable. But for the son of the man who carved the pole 57 years ago, the accident was a reminder of what the piece means to him — and to his father’s legacy.

The next day, Brian Wallace stood on the sidewalk near the museum. He pointed at skid marks where the bus jumped the curb while turning around on the narrow, two-way street.

“Well, I was assuming the worst,” he said.

His father, Amos Wallace , carved the pole when Brian was a kid.

The pole, also known as a kootéeyaa , has stood outside the museum for over 50 years. Wallace said he remembers helping his dad with it, pulling large patches of bark off the felled tree.

Amos died twenty years ago.

Wallace said he rushed to the museum the moment he had a break from work after hearing about the accident. He’s glad the damage was minimal, but he said the pole is irreplaceable.

“The dent is not that big, but, well, if you dent a little Volkswagen Bug, no big deal,” he said. “You can get it fixed. This is one of a kind. If something terrible happens to it, it’s gone. A part of my dad’s legacy would be gone.”

This wasn’t the first time Wallace has seen someone damage the pole.

“Twenty years ago, I was driving by and I saw a couple of clowns who had climbed up on this — they were getting their family photo taken. I slammed the brakes right there and got on my truck and came and got them off,” he said

He pointed to another dent on the pole.

“And that was knocked off by one of the boys that was on top of it,” Wallace said.

Last summer, Sealaska Heritage Institute got reports that cruise tourists were climbing on some of the new poles along the Seawalk. They put up signs about the importance and sacredness of kootéeyaa to Southeast Alaska Native people.

For Wallace, this pole matters on a deeply personal level, too.

“This thing is real near and dear to me. I remember dad carving it when I was six years old in 1967,” he said. “And it’s a great sense of pride for me every time I come by and have a look at that. Yeah, my dad did that.”

City Museum Director Beth Weigel said Alaska Coach Tours representatives came to the museum and told her the driver was trying to get to the Alaska State Museum and got confused, then tried to turn around when they realized the error.

“We’re really grateful to the community for alerting us immediately to what they witnessed, and that we’re grateful to the tour company for being so responsive and helpful in resolving any issues that have resulted from the accident,” she said.

A representative from Alaska Coach Tours said in an email that the driver reported the accident to management.

Gunman captured after attempted attack on US Embassy in Lebanon

Lebanese security stand guard on a road that leads to the U.S. Embassy in Aukar, a northern...

BEIRUT (AP) - A gunman was shot and captured by Lebanese soldiers after a shootout outside the U.S. Embassy outside Beirut on Wednesday morning, the military said.

The attack took place as tensions continued to simmer in the tiny Mediterranean country, where months of fighting between Hezbollah militants and Israeli troops has displaced thousands along the border, following years of political deadlock and economic hardship.

The Lebanese military in a statement said that soldiers shot an assailant, who they only described as a Syrian national. The gunman was wounded and taken to a hospital.

The shooter’s motives were not clear. However, Lebanese media have published photos that appear to show a bloodied attacker wearing a black vest with the words “Islamic State” written in Arabic and the English initials “I” and “S.”

Local media reported that there was a gunfight involving at least one attacker lasting almost half an hour. A video that surfaced on social media showed a gunman in a parking lot across the embassy’s entrance shooting with what appears to be an assault rifle.

The U.S. Embassy said the attack by the embassy’s entrance did not cause any casualties among their staff, and that Lebanese troops and embassy security mobilized quickly.

A statement from Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s office said that he was informed following meetings with the defense minister and army commander that the situation was now stable and that serious investigations are underway.

The Lebanese military said it deployed troops around the embassy and surrounding areas.

In 1983, a deadly bombing attack on the U.S. Embassy in Beirut killed 63 people. U.S. officials blame the attack on the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Following that attack, the embassy was moved from central Beirut to the Christian suburb of Aukar, north of the capital. Another bomb attack struck the new location on Sept. 20, 1984.

In September 2023, Lebanese security forces detained a Lebanese man who opened fire by the U.S. Embassy. There were no casualties in that attack.

In October 2023, hundreds of protesters clashed with Lebanese security forces in demonstrations near the U.S. Embassy in support of Gaza’s people and the militant group Hamas in its war with Israel.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

Five girls were hospitalized Tuesday afternoon when a chartered tour bus crashed into a tree branch hanging over a Passaic County road, authorities and the bus company operator said.

The injured were on the bus owned by Monsey Tours of Brooklyn, New York, that crashed about 3:15 p.m. on County Road 704 (East Shore Road) south of the Storms Island Road intersection in West Milford, police said.

“The bus was traveling south on East Shore Road when it struck a tree, causing one of the branches to break off and enter the passenger compartment of the bus,” West Milford police Chief Shannon Sommerville said in a statement.

How one Wilmington bus tour honors 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education

tour bus in lebanon

One 76-year-old University of Delaware student had an idea.

Karen Ingram had been cultivating interest in a particular chapter of Delaware history long before she enrolled. Now, about to earn her first master's degree this spring, almost all of her academic writings have surrounded this history. Her own experience led her to it. And this weekend, she got to share that passion on "The Trail to Desegregation."

Ingram, empowered by community partners for a final capstone project, marked the 70th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision with a bus tour. It would trace Delaware's own roots in this landmark desegregation ruling, as the sold-out Saturday tour made stops at Redding House Museum and Community Center, Howard High School, Claymont Community Center and Hockessin Colored School #107C.

"I wanted to tell the whole story," Ingram said, knowing people rarely get to put all these pieces together. "That is what got us here. I wanted to tell the whole story, on a half-day ride on a bus."

By Saturday morning, some 40 people would pack that fitting school bus in front of now-Howard High School of Technology, once the only high school serving Black students in the state and one of the earliest in the nation. Seats filled with fellow organizers, members of the public and a few special guests.

And while the bus rolled down the street, these Delaware institutions have quietly weaved their own way into well-known national history. Seemingly everyone understands the Brown v. Board of Education decision, eventually stripping the country of its "separate but equal" doctrine, to be one of the most seminal cases in American history.

But many might need a reminder of how closely Delaware is tied to the same story.

Wilmington with two school districts? Delaware’s latest redistricting vision to take shape

Reclaiming connections

Ingram has been hungry to learn more about this history.

Coming to Delaware as a young woman, the New Jersey native took a job working as a legal secretary for Louis L. Redding in 1968, first as a Goldey-Beacom College co-op student. The Wilmington powerhouse lawyer and civil rights advocate had helped lead the legal team on two cases challenging school segregation in Delaware, then at the U.S. Supreme Court in Brown v. Board.

Only, as a 21-year-old, Ingram didn't realize it. She left the work for a corporate job, hoping for better benefits.

"I did not know at the time being, you know, that the man who I was working for was very powerful," Ingram recalled. In fact, growing up in New Jersey, in school, in early years of corporate work, she was often in majority-white spaces.

"I did not realize that I lacked a lot of knowledge in African history, of my African American history," she said. "So, I had an opportunity to go to the University of Delaware, and my focus was on African American subjects."

Working within community organizations, earning a bachelor's in her 50s, this master's before 80, soon going for her doctorate — she has been soaking up as much as she can ever since. And rather than write a thesis for her program, Ingram decided to create a project to honor Redding’s legacy.

It started by getting on the bus.

School rankings: U.S. News & World Report just ranked Delaware’s top schools. But what do they miss?

'The Trail to Desegregation'

The family home of Ingram's once-boss is more than a house today.

Tour takers saw a Redding House Museum and Community Center maintained by its own foundation, now also a historical landmark located near downtown Wilmington. After rehabilitation that followed in 1997, it looks to honor Redding’s legacy, one of impact on civil rights, community and law.

During the more than 50 years that he practiced law in Delaware, according to the foundation, the state's first Black attorney handled cases that challenged discrimination in housing, public accommodations, employment and criminal justice.

Redding's two Delaware cases would consolidate with four other cases, now collectively remembered as Brown v. Board of Education. Those cases were Bulah v. Gebhart and Gebhart v. Belton.

"Does anyone know why we're on a bus?" Ingram posed from the front, looking back at her tour as it moved along.

Everyone got the idea. In 1951, the families of Ethel Louise Belton and Shirley Barbara Bulah hired Redding in two separate cases, suing the state for refusing to provide transportation to attend the schools closest to their homes. Belton was required to attend Howard High School, a forced 20-mile round trip on public transportation, while living just blocks from all-white Claymont High. Bulah attended Hockessin Colored School #107-C, even though a white school would have been much closer for the 7-year-old.

Now Claymont Community Center, the high school once housed the "Claymont Twelve," a group of Black students who successfully integrated the school under court order in 1952, according to organizers, despite the Delaware attorney general's instructions not to do it.

Most further desegregation ceased until cases made their way through the Supreme Court. And, though the coming decision called for "immediate" stop to segregated schools, the reality would play out much more slowly. In Delaware, school segregation in some areas persisted until the late '60s.

Hockessin Colored School #107C ceased operations after desegregation. After a rocky road, the school has now been restored and transformed into a Center for Diversity and Social Equity. In 2022, President Joe Biden protected the site, having signed a law incorporating Hockessin Colored School #107 into the National Park System among other additions.

Biden and parks: Delaware played a big role in Brown v. Board of Education. So did this Hockessin school

“The Trail to Desegregation: A Journey to Freedom and Equality” — Ingram's project coming together thanks to help from Delaware Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Delaware Heritage Commission, the Delaware Historical Society and more partners — followed these markers in a loop, while speakers and tours padded it with historical context.

The cases they traced went on to reshape education across the country, even as new challenges persist today. Students, families, communities in Delaware helped fuel this May 17, 1954, decision finding racial segregation in schools unconstitutional in the United States.

Ingram hopes people take that with them, maybe even fueling future tours.

"In the '50s, people were not supposed to be an advocate for their rights; they were just supposed to let things be the way they are," she said. "So I'd like to think that people will know: There is an opportunity for anybody who wants to change things. They can do that."

NEW YORK (AP) — A man and woman who sold pro-Donald Trump merchandise out of a bus covered with pro-Trump flags and posters are homeless after the vehicle crashed into several street signs and utility poles in New York City.

The crash happened around noon on Sunday on Staten Island, the Fire Department said.

Donna Eiden, who had been living in the bus with her husband, Rocky Granata, and their cat, Missy, told the Staten Island Advance that she was sleeping inside the parked vehicle when when it began to roll along Hylan Boulevard, crashing into signs and poles in its path.

Photos of the crash’s aftermath show the side of the bus ripped to shreds and Trump signs scattered about.

“That’s our life, we live in it; we travel in it. I have my daughter’s ashes in it,” Eiden told the Advance. “It’s our business. It’s our life.”

Eiden had to be extracted from the wrecked vehicle, firefighters said. She did not require medical treatment.

The bus had been a frequent presence at Trump rallies around the country before it crashed.
