Tour a Tiny Cottage in the Woods

The cabin lifestyle is not just some run of the mill hobby or pastime; it’s a passion. And some people, like Rebbecca Abair, take it to extremes. Rebbecca, of Port Orchard, Wash., puts her time, robust energy and talents into creating a fairy tale cluster of cabins in the woods.

A path of natural flagstone leads to the cedar stairs and porch of Squirrel cabin. Colorful pots of annuals team up with perennial shrubbery that surrounds the cabin’s foundation.

ARCD-11141_11868_2023-10-20_08-53

Rebbecca Abair incorporated a variety of rustic building materials into the 432-square-foot Squirrel cabin, including handhewn milled siding, a log post-and-beam porch, and river rock chimney and foundation facing. Half logs serve as steps to the cedar seating platform.

ARCD-11151_11868_2023-10-20_08-54

Rebbecca laid the brick hearth for her wood stove, which is the sole heat source for Squirrel cabin. Oversized double-hung Kolbe windows flood the living room interior with natural light. Reclaimed flooring gleams after Rebbecca salvaged it from a 1927 house, planed it smooth and finished it with a clear coat of nontoxic polyurethane.

ARCD-11156_11868_2023-10-20_08-54

Whitewashed tongue-and-groove pine brightens the Squirrel sleeping loft. Rebbecca sleeps in an antique iron bed beneath windows that take in a canopy of green. She enjoys collecting vintage quilts, such as the “Around the World” bed covering. Old dressers were painted green and installed in knee walls. An oriental rug was modified to receive the loft ladder through a cutout in the floor.

Squirrel cabin’s whitewashed tongue-and-groove walls and ceilings contrast beautifully with dark stained fir trim and 2x10 floor joists. Antique furnishings are grouped to form an office area.

ARCD-11154_11868_2023-10-20_08-54

Painted white lower cabinets are topped with John Boos maple butcher block. “I don’t cut on them,” says Rebbecca. “They are far too beautiful to mar!” Antique sewing machine drawers store spices and other small kitchen sundries. Rebbecca collaborated with Herb’s Cabinets in Port Orchard to create the delightful one-of-a-kind kitchen.

ARCD-11155_11868_2023-10-20_08-54

The Squirrel cabin’s bathroom is tucked into a corner of the house off the kitchen. The 1927 Standard toilet was found at a local garage sale.

A cabin-building legacy

We especially love the uber-cool all-white kitchen and the beautifully decored living area that boasts a timeless neutral color palette. Other highlights include a fire pit, a covered outdoor seating area (complete with plush seats and a cushioned swing bed!), a gas fireplace and, to top it off, a hot tub available for year-round use.

Make yourself cozy under the heated blanket (which comes in clutch during the wintertime) and watch the snow fall—that is, without stepping foot outside—from the floor-to-ceiling window that’s adjacent to the bed. The all-wooden interiors set the scene for a rustic escape. The fun continues outside with an outdoor fire pit (s’mores, anyone?).

Old World Garden Farms

The Perfect Small Cabin House – Living Large In 600 Square Feet!

Of all of the projects that we have taken on at the new farm in the last year, there is little doubt that the small cabin house that now sits in the woods on the back of our property is our personal favorite.

At just a fraction over 600 square feet, it is certainly one of the smaller buildings on the farm. But although it may be on the smaller size when it comes to living space, is it ever jam-packed with everything you could need to live large!

Cabin living can certainly be rejuvenating. It can take you away from busy streets and traffic jams. One thing is for sure, it can be a great time to read, think, plan – or simply catch up on some much needed rest. Especially if you can still have all of the comforts of modern living at your fingertips – all with nothing more than the woods and nature as your backdrop!

litte cabin house

Without a doubt, the little cabin, or “The Cottage” as we now refer to it, has become one of our favorite spaces at the farm. Not just for friends and family to stay, but for us to get away to as well. Today, we are excited to show you the finished build out, complete with a video tour link near the bottom of the article.

“The Cottage” – Building The Perfect Small Cabin House In The Woods

More than anything else, we wanted to create a highly efficient, self-sufficient, low-maintenance structure that would stand up to the test of time. As we love to do, we once again modified an existing Weaver Barns plan to create exactly what we wanted!

Although an all-wood cabin may look incredible when first built, it can require a lot of maintenance! In fact, without continually painting, caulking, and sealing the wood, an all-wood cabin can go south quickly. Especially when you put it in the middle of the woods where moisture, mildew, and the elements can take their toll much quicker.

the kitchen - small cabin house

To accomplish that, we used textured metal board and batten siding along with a stone wainscot and ledge to clad the exterior. And to keep it entirely maintenance free, we topped it all off with a metal roof. We used the same material combination on our barndominium home at the farm, and absolutely love it! See: Barndominium Project

The stone wainscot fits the wood setting well, and we can’t say enough about the textured board and batten siding. It looks nearly identical to wood siding but comes with a maintenance-free 50 year warranty. Most importantly, they both are termite proof!

Foundation / Floor – The Perfect Small Cabin House

The cabin’s foundation is created of a simple concrete pad poured with a footer and cement block perimeter. Within the concrete, there is pex piping that allows for radiant floor heat throughout the cabin. The radiant heat is powered by an on-demand gas fired hot water heater. It heats the cabin both comfortably and economically – and provides endless hot water too.

That is really important as a space saver for a cabin. There is no need for a furnace, or for a hot water tank. Just a small tankless hot water heater that fits in the tiny control room on the wall.

on demand heater - small cabin house

Another big savings is that the concrete pad also serves as our final floor. We had the concrete scored with saw cuts into 2′ x 2′ sections. To finish it all off, we then acid-stained the concrete to look like marble tiles.

The radiant heat provides incredibly comfortable warmth, and not having to put a floor in saves big on the construction budget. It also makes keeping it all clean a breeze. For air conditioning needs, we installed a split A/C unit. By using the two systems together, there is no ductwork at all in the house – and energy costs are extremely low.

The Perfect Floor Plan – A Small Cabin With Big Space

One of the things that can really make a space feel big is the height of the ceiling. We learned that when building our first home. Small ceilings can make a small room seem tiny. But soaring ceilings can have just the opposite effect.

The cabin’s two-story plan sits at a total height of 18 feet. When you walk into the first floor, the tall ceiling above gives the space a huge feel. Even though, of course, the entire cabin is only a little over 600 square feet!

That openness is also very helpful with the upstairs loft as well. By having it open to below, the upstairs area feels much larger than it is. Large enough to hold a king size bed and a small desk as well. You can take a video tour of the entire space on our YouTube channel here : The Cottage Small House Cabin Tour

Making The Most Of Available Space

upstairs - the small cabin house

The floor plan of the cabin really makes great use of the available space. It all starts with a full bathroom tucked behind the kitchen and under the stairs. The space is easy to get to with a pocket door.

The pocket door helps conserve on space, eliminating the need for an area for a swinging door. It’s also wonderful to have a full size toilet and a shower in such a small cabin. The access to the mechanical room underneath the stairs is also in the bathroom.

The kitchen and living room areas all connect and are open. As for the kitchen, we were able to include both a full size refrigerator and regular stove. It is just another way to make the space feel “normal” and large.

The main living area is large enough for a full couch that also pulls out to an extra bed. The living area also has a recliner and a small kitchen table for two along the front window area. We could have put a fireplace on the main wall, but opted not to with the woods so close by. We may put a gas fired stove in at some point in the future.

main cabin floor plan

Last but not least, we really wanted to have a space for a small washer and dryer. As we travel to a lot of Airbnb’s – it is always such a nice perk to have a washer and dryer. Especially if a guest is staying for an extended time. The space backs up against the shower wall, so plumbing for it was an easy task.

Upstairs – A Small Cabin With Big Space

The upstairs loft area has a large and spacious feel as well. Once again, it helps that it opens to the main room below. But with that said, the railing and size allow the bedroom to sit back a bit, so there is still a lot of privacy from the area down below.

Finally, the one part of the cabin house we love the most is the outdoor covered porch! The porch is accessible through a 6 panel glass door off of the main living area. It really makes the cabin feel large with its big views of the woods and ravines below.

the woods and the view

Who “Fits” Best in a Tiny House Cabin?

tiny-house-cabin-owner

Is Tiny House Cabins a good fit for anyone? Yes, for the most part, a Tiny House Cabin creates a perfect and small haven for anyone and especially the following groups of people.

Hunters – A tiny house cabin offers the perfect home-base to retire after a long day of hunting. The rustic charm fits right into the woods. The walls and interior can be decorated to emulate a hunter’s paradise.

Minimalists – If you are choosing to downsize, rid your life of all unnecessary “stuff”, and seek a life free to focus on relationship, nature, and quality of life experiences, then a tiny house cabin is for you.

Homeowners (with a large backyard and limited guestroom space) – A tiny house cabin creates a perfect guest house! Not only does it make for super cozy living quarters, but it also offers an affordable way to add extra living space, that you can even rent out on Airbnb.

Outdoorsy People – If you love the outdoors more than being inside, then a tiny house cabin is absolutely for you! If you spend more time outdoors than inside, why not own a smaller living space.

NOTE: Layout and size would be more necessary to consider though if you are hoping to create a luxury tiny house cabin for your grandparents. It would be ideal then to incorporate a sleeping space for them on the ground floor rather than the loft.

IT’S TINY HOUSE TOUR TIME! COME ALONG AND SHARE THE JOURNEY OF TOURING A FEW TINY HOMES – LOG CABIN STYLE!

I thought you’d enjoy taking a tour around a tiny house, log cabin style with me today. Me and my Bestie found the most darling log cabin tiny houses while in Shipshewana IN and of course just couldn’t pass up snooping around a little.

My bestie lives in an apartment right now but after touring these darling places I tried talking her into buying the biggest model and planting it on her sons farm. I love that they come move in ready all she’d have to do is hook up to his well and septic system.

I say that like it’s an easy thing to do ya know? I know the log cabin look isn’t for everyone, but these are just perfect in every way. They certainly are meant for one person in my opinion but maybe a couple could make one of these places work.

I often wondered about those people from the tv series Tiny House Living how they’re doing. How long have they really stuck with living this way, and are those couples still together?

Heck my shoe room has more space than some of these tiny home. I guess as Americans we tend to overbuy and over keep things. I totally love the concept and think the homes are adorable but I’m almost positive I could never live in such a small space.

I like my alone time too much to be living right on top of someone else. And I’m sure my hubby feels the same way. LOL

Is tiny house living something you could do? If so tell me why it appeals to you, and what size home is the smallest you could get by with?

I live my myself, so I could manage in one of these larger “tiny” log cabin homes, with a couple of modifications: No 1: I can appreciate the log cabin style when it comes to the walls and floors, but all that really rustic furniture and decor would HAVE TO GO. I value overstuffed and upholstered comfort. No 2: No loft bedroom. I’m way too old to be climbing a ladder in order to go to bed. A broken bone waiting to happen, as far as I’m concerned. No 3: There would have to be something outside to make up for the small footage inside – like the ocean, or at least a lake, or a mountain view. I’m not sure I could do “tiny,” but would be willing to try “small.” Maybe I could handle 650-700 sq ft. I’m looking forward to other comments on this.

That doesn’t look as small as some tiny houses. And it’s really cute. But I love my “stuff”. Downsizing from 4-bedrooms, 3 baths & 4 car garage to 2 bedrooms is not easy!

I don’t think I could live in something that tiny but I think it would be great as a weekend retreat by a lake somewhere! Thanks for sharing.

Oh my goodness———-NO and NO again. How do you entertain? It is darling but definitely way too small.

Yes!!! In a heart beat! My husband and i downsized from 3000 sq. ft, in Michigan and moved to Washington state and bought a 1300 sq. ft cottage. After living here for a bit over a year, we’re considering down sizing again, into a much smaller home….maybe about 500 sq. feet. We lived in a 28 foot 5th wheel for a year and loved it, so we may end up as nomads….who knows, but we are retired and life is one big adventure.

Erika, we went from a 1600 sqft. home to a 3200 sqft home but will downsize again once all the kids move out. My oldest is converting a barn to a home right now and will leave in the spring and my youngest is transferring from his job back to our area so he’ll move home again while he looks for a house to buy. Im wondering if we’ll regret downsizing once the grand kids start? I love our location and our cabin now so we may stick it out a few more years before we go small again.

My husband and I purchased our first house during the pandemic in 2020. (I was 7 months pregnant at the time). It’s only a 704 sq ft stick built cabin on the river. We got a great deal and only by God’s grace we got it just in time to settle in before our baby came. Fast forward to 2024 and we are still here with two kids. It’s been a little on the small end but keeps us from cluttering up too much.

Keep yourself busy by cooking up dinner on your Weber grill or ordering from local restaurants, play a lawn game, watch a family movie on the outdoor screen and roast marshmallows over your fire pit. When you’re ready to venture out, it’s a short walk to the on-site waterfall. Or try creek tubing, goat yoga or a stroll along the  Hudson River Skywalk . What You Need to Know About Tiny Cabins

Going small–really small–has been a huge trend, but there's a big difference between having a "tiny house" and owning a solid, smart cabin. Here's what you need to know.

tiny cabin tour

The Tiny Cabin

What happens if we take the wheels off and put the structure on a foundation? It’s called a tiny cabin.

Emphasizing the simplicity of this one change is important, as the ramifications are significant. First, the confusion about which “dot gov” department gets to oversee your plans is gone. It’s the local building department. The storage issues are over — even if it’s a 300-square-foot cabin that you’re dreaming of, there will be room on the property for a shed or garage. The cabin will require water, but options for placing a cistern, well or even a city tap exist. Electricity on or off the grid is an option. The building officials may not be overly concerned about how the cabin is powered or even where the water comes from, but where the waste water goes is a huge concern, and rightfully so. Waste removal likely will be mandated by the county or state, requiring a holding tank, septic field or city sewage.

These kinds of daily life conveniences are important, but property appreciation may be the most significant advantage to a tiny cabin. Residential investments typically increase in value over the long term. Obviously, many factors come into play, but a 10 percent increase in the first year is not unheard of (neither is a 50 percent decrease in value on a wheeled vehicle after the first year).

Another check mark in the tiny cabin pro column is that weight and physical dimensions aren’t an issue. If your tiny cabin dream is 500 square feet sheathed in lightweight aluminum siding, so be it. If it’s built with 10-inch-diameter logs, even better. Options are now open to you that weren’t available when the “foundation” was a dual-axle utility trailer rated to weigh a max of 10,000 pounds. Quality levels may differ with various builders, but life-safety features will be mandated and inspected by the local building department.

Making the Tiny Cabin a Reality

What’s the first step to making a tiny cabin dream come true? Land. If you can’t “Go West young man,” as Horace Greeley noted about America’s expansion, look for inexpensive, building-code-friendly land . Make sure the jurisdiction allows for residential structures smaller than 600 square feet in your desired area. And when it comes to expense, remember that construction and material costs will fluctuate in different regions of the country, so what’s doable for $50k on one lot may cost $100k a few states, or even counties, over. It doesn’t need to be vast, but a flat, buildable lot will save on construction costs.

As for construction itself, it will be regulated by the building department, and this is where it gets tricky. While the tiny house offers free rein for creative minds, the tiny cabin plays by more rules. Previous building code thresholds required residences to be at least 600 square feet, though many jurisdictions have eliminated that mandate and merely require all the room sizes to be no less than code minimums. For example, the IRC says a bedroom has to be a minimum of 70 square feet with at least one wall that’s 7 feet long and at least half the ceiling at 7 feet tall. Other rules require egress windows and properly designed stairs with electrical and plumbing installed per their respective codes. These aren’t bad things, in fact they add to the value of the cabin, as subsequent buyers are assured of a safe construction standard. Going tiny is still possible; it just takes some creative design skills.

Small Cabin Design

Keep the building simple. Since it’s cost, or lack thereof, that drives this tiny cabin idea, simple plans keep the price down. Think rectangular footprint, a crawl space or monolithic slab foundation, a shed or single-gable roof, stock window/door sizes, downsized cabinets or open shelving and compact appliances. Use every inch of extra space for storage and mechanicals.

Also, strive for t wo-for-one functionality where you can. Pick a roof pitch that’s ideal for a solar panel. Insulate a concrete-slab foundation and seal it after it cures so it can serve as your finished floor. Install a propane-fired “wood stove” so it meets your heating needs and adds ambiance. Have the attic designed for storage. Choose furniture that pulls double duty , such as a sofa sleeper or an expandable table.

Be creative and eliminate anything that isn’t necessary. If need be, a small shed can be added on the property for storing items that don’t require conditioned space. Unlivable space is significantly less expensive to build than livable space.

Hundreds of tiny cabin floor plan ideas exist online, but keep in mind that architectural plans are protected by copyright, so you’ll need to buy them or have permission to use them. Don’t be afraid to reach out to an architect or engineer for help — building code officials may require engineer-stamped plans anyway.

Call a Log Home Builder

Enlisting a professional builder to erect your tiny cabin will add some cost to your bottom line, but it will eliminate the most stressful headaches related to building code navigation and compliance. In terms of saving your sanity and getting a safe structure in the process, the benefits of a builder cannot be emphasized enough.

Tiny living doesn’t have to be confined to a depreciating asset that’s limited by the capacity of a cargo trailer. The same simple, peaceful concepts of living tiny can be transferred to a cabin that will increase both in value and your level of enjoyment.

Small Cabin Building Tips

  • Off-grid vs. on-the-grid: When building a cabin, deciding whether to choose a rustic off-grid or more comfortable on-the-grid structure that includes plumbing, electricity, temperature control, and wifi hookups will help determine your budget. It will also help you to decide whether the property you are planning to build on is suited to your project—or make it easier to narrow your options if purchasing land.
  • Building the cabin’s foundation: It’s important to build a solid foundation to keep your cabin secure and durable over the long term. Consider the main types of house foundations and their uses before planning your cabin build.
  • Building a portable cabin on a trailer wheelbase: If you are planning to build a portable cabin on a trailer wheelbase, be sure you have the advanced DIY skills necessary to complete the project. Building a small cabin can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on the scope of your project and whether you build it yourself or hire professional help.
  • Purchasing or finding land: When looking for land upon which to build your cabin, be sure to check local laws and permitting guidelines before purchasing. The wrong location may not be suitable for important elements like electrical and plumbing, or these necessities may be significantly more expensive to install on certain lots.
  • Cost of extra features: When building a budget for your cabin, be sure to consider the cost of extra features, which can up the end cost dramatically. Start with a wish list of both non-negotiables and extra features. Basic components like plumbing and electrical wiring will increase cost, as will small cabin extras like heat, air conditioning, and wifi hookups.

The cost of building a small cabin yourself will vary depending on many factors, from materials to labor costs to extra features. Depending on whether you are building it yourself from reclaimed materials or a kit, hiring a professional, or buying a turnkey prefab model, a small cabin can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several hundred thousand dollars.

Small cabins start at the truly tiny (around 100 square feet), and depending on your idea of what “small” means can range up to 1,000 square feet or even more.

Generally speaking, it’s less expensive to build a cabin, because cabins are usually smaller than houses. But all is relative, depending on both size, materials, labor costs, and the price of land. According to Angi , the average cost of building a 500-square-foot log cabin is $75,000, whereas the average cost of building a house is $297,954.

There is no one "best" shape for a cabin. The shape you choose should be specific to your wants and needs. That said, the most common shape for a cabin is a rectangle.

I spent 2 nights alone in an off-grid cabin in the woods. It wasn't as creepy as I thought it would be, but the rustic toilet terrified me at first.

  • I recently stayed solo at a tiny, off-grid cabin in the woods.
  • It sounds like a horror-movie plot, but this cozy cabin was no nightmare.
  • The scariest thing was coming to terms with the rustic toilet, which didn't feature running water.

Insider Today

This story starts with a 20-something female journalist taking a drive out of the city to stay at a cabin in the woods – alone.

As I write that sentence I am acutely aware of how the premise sounds like the plot of a cheap horror movie . However, I can vouch for the fact that it isn't because I did recently spend two nights at an off-grid tiny cabin in the British countryside, and I lived to tell the tale.

Besides mistakenly booking the trip for an unseasonably warm week in September, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the cabin, which cost roughly $192 per night and is run by Unyoked , a company offering similar stays at cabins throughout the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

From its quaint kitchen and luxurious-looking bathroom, to its breathtaking views of a lush national park and huge comfy bed, the experience helped me put an end to the-creepy-cabin-in-the-woods stereotype. Take a look.

I recently booked a two-night stay at a tiny cabin in the middle of the woods. The cabin is one of over 100 built and run by Unyoked, a company founded by two Australian brothers, that promises visitors an escape to the "busyness" of modern life.

To reach the cabin, I drove nearly two hours away from the chaos of London to the peace and quiet of South Downs National Park, known for its rolling hills, river valleys, and ancient woodland.

After parking my car, I used a large wheelbarrow provided by Unyoked to carry my bags to the cabin. My on-foot journey from the car to the cabin was only 164 feet.

The cabin I stayed in was called Josef. At the time of booking, a two-night stay in the 161-square-foot tiny home, built from locally sourced materials, cost £308, or around $384. It was sleek, modern-looking, and totally the opposite of the creepy image people usually associate with a cabin in the woods.

When I arrived, I stood out on the small deck in front to soak in the views of the national park. The lush greenery instantly made me feel like I'd been transported from England to a tropical country.

Steps away from the cabin was a fire pit with three stools carved out of tree trunks, which did briefly make me think it would've been nice to bring another person to enjoy it with.

Inside the cabin, the bed, dining area, and kitchen were all in one room. The interior was modest, but super cozy and idyllic.

The queen-sized bed, topped with an autumnal throw and hot water bottles, was surrounded by windows. I kept them open during the day for air circulation. But at night, I closed them and pulled down the blinds, which made me feel safe, and right at home.

In order to minimize clutter and create space, the cabin was creatively designed with a lot of the furniture built into the structure. The dining area, fit for two, was built into the wall and the bed frame. There was also plenty of space beneath the bed itself, where Unyoked provides two yoga mats and a small fan.

The kitchen was also fully stocked with essential cooking items, including a gas stove, a sink with running water, knives, olive oil, seasonings, coffee beans, a grinder, and a French press.

Drawers beneath the kitchen counter housed a mini fridge, sets of cookware, plates, bowls, cutlery, chopping boards – basically everything I needed to whip up several meals for two days.

Equipment used to cook over a fire outdoors, including a large cast iron stove and a barbecue rack, was stored in a semi-concealed crawl space beneath the cabin.

tiny cabin tour

My first impression of the bathroom, accessible behind a pocket sliding door, was that it was much more sleek and modern than I anticipated. It was also well stocked with clean towels, plenty of toilet paper, soap, and shower gel.

tiny cabin tour

The rain shower ran as hot as I like my regular shower temperature at home, and was right next to a window so I could wash with views of the countryside.

tiny cabin tour

The only aspect that slightly terrified me was the toilet which didn't come with running water, and instead led to a pit where waste is turned into compost. Next to the toilet was a room spray and a bucket of wood chips to spoon into it. As a city girl, I was horrified initially, but in the end, it didn't bother me because there was no smell.

tiny cabin tour

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't give up my toilet that has running water at home for anything. But the rustic aspects of my cabin stay ultimately proved to me that I am able to thrive in minimalistic spaces where less is more, and that a cabin in the woods isn't as creepy as you may think it is.
