Article: Top 10 Japanese Dramas That Explore Time Travel

time travel jdrama

While science fiction dramas can be downright mind-boggling, there are some aspects of the genre that allow you to just enjoy the content without putting too much thought into it. One such aspect is Time Travel, which, if done right, can entertain the viewer without confusing them. Even though some intricately crafted time travel dramas lean too much into the science aspect of it, many light-hearted dramas focus on the comedy aspect. The utter chaos of the time travel journey, followed by witty situations as the time traveler adjusts to their vastly different time periods, is side-splitting to behold. Take a look at the top Japanese dramas that focus on time travel!

1. Suteki Na Sen Taxi (Time Taxi)

Penned by writers Bakarhythm and Ohkura, Suteki na Sen Taxi is a comedy science fiction drama. Eda is the driver of Sen Taxi, a mysterious vehicle that has the power to transport its passengers back into the past. Passengers are hauled back to a past moment they regret the most and wish they could do something different about that particular moment. While the plot sounds straightforward, some fun ensues when the whole “time-travel” aspect doesn’t go according to plan. The writing of the drama is clever and keeps the audience hooked with twists and turns.

2. Proposal Daisakusen (Operation Love)

Also known by its English name, Operation Love, Proposal Daisakusen is a blend of romance and time-travel genres. The story has a bittersweet aura surrounding the series, and the main focus is on second chances and love. As Ken prepares to watch the love of his life marry another man, a fairy appears and sends him back in time so that he has another shot at love. Operation Love is a fun, romance-filled drama with sci-fi elements.

The plot revolves around a brilliant pharmaceutical researcher who is left unconscious after a car accident. This review contains spoilers for episode 1 of Erased .

Satoru Fujinuma (Yuki Furukawa) is a manga artist. He’s finding it difficult to get his art published and to find his feet in the big world of work and so supplements his income working at a pizza chain with his young and somewhat over-enthusiastic friend Airi Katagiri (Mio Yuki). It’s not long into his latest pizza delivery, however, that the mise-en-scene warps and pulls like PVA glue off skin and Satoru breaks through the other side. He appears to be re-living life as it was a couple of minutes ago; as though time has reset itself.

He explains in a voiceover that he calls these moments ‘revivals’. When something bad happens, he is sent back to a few minutes previous by an unknown force to set things right. Satoru frantically scans the scene from his pizza delivery moped for signs of danger and soon notices that a lorry driver is asleep at the wheel. His interference neutralises the potential danger and he goes back to the current time, although his actions to stop the lorry have landed him in hospital. You get the impression this happens a lot and, much to his annoyance, his mother Sachiko (Tomoka Kurotani) has decided to come and stay to help him back on his feet.

During a shopping trip with his mother Satoru’s entire life changes. He experiences another of his ‘revivals’ and, although he is unable to identify a danger, his mother spots a man trying to abduct a little girl. She types something into her phone at the time but makes light of what she witnessed when Satoru asks her about it later. Hours later while alone in Satoru’s flat, Sachiko is brutally stabbed in the back by an unknown male, who waits for Satoru to find his mother’s body and then coaxes him into a chase that leaves Satoru the blood-stained number one suspect in his mother’s murder. Trying to avoid the police to set the record straight, Satoru runs head-long into another ‘revival’… but he’s gone back much further than ever before.

time travel jdrama

Satoru finds himself in 1988 at his former school, Mikoto Elementary. He knows he must have been sent back this far for a reason, and soon recalls a string of kidnaps and murders that took place in this year while he was in the fifth grade. Three children disappeared and were later found dead but the perpetrator was never discovered. Instead, the police have the wrong man on death row in the present day (2006), an old school friend of Satoru’s that he nicknamed Yuuki, meaning ‘courage’.

It becomes clear that in order to save his mother, Satoru must save the three children that were abducted in 1988 and uncover the murderer and his connection to the attempted kidnap that his mother saw. He needs to break the negative chain in the past to save people in the present and, in the process, comes to appreciate the precious moments with his mother and friends in his childhood.

It sound like a series that would be difficult to keep up with, doesn’t it? Erased chops and changes between time periods and indeed actors, with two different performers playing Satoru in the present day and in 1988. It is credit to director Ten Shimoyama, then, that the series is not nearly as difficult to understand as it sounds on paper. The narrative elements are gently introduced and the characters well established, making time transitions easy to get on board with. It can feel at first that the present day, established in the first episode, is miles apart and almost unnecessary to the unfolding story in 1988 that we see from the second episode onward, but as the series progresses it becomes clear that no time period is irrelevant or left behind. The first time we revisit 2006, nothing feels amiss and the action picks right up from where it left off. It’s wonderful directing; matching the past and present tonally and giving the audience details from one time period to inform the other. It’s an intricately weaved narrative marvel.

Originally a manga by Kei Sanbe, Erased became an anime series and a live-action film in 2016 before being given the Netflix treatment. It’s a popular and well known story with a lot riding on it for the fans, so director Shimoyama plays with his captive audience, cranking up the tension as the narrative in one time period comes to a dramatic head… only for Satoru to then be thrust back (or forward) again to deal with matters on the other side. It’s excruciating and very deliberate; Shimoyama has his audience in the palm of his hand and we’re loving the high-stakes ride.

The series is truly made by its spectacular cast. For a story with so much emphasis on love and trust, it is crucial that the affection between characters rings true – and it really does. The mother-son relationship is very touching and actress Tomoka Kurotani does a wonderful job with both actors that play Satoru, her warmth and resolve helping to connect the two time periods and add urgency to Satoru’s quest. Shigeyuki Totsugi, meanwhile, is great as young Satoru’s school teacher and imbues the role with kindness and paternal warmth. Look out for a lovely scene involving a stash of lollipops.

time travel jdrama

The young actor who plays Satoru in 1988, however, pretty much runs the show. He certainly steals every scene he is in. Reo Uchikawa is outstanding, carrying the weight of half of the show on his shoulders like it is nothing at all with his wonderfully expressive face and often deeply moving performance. Young Satoru’s primary aim is to look after the first child who was kidnapped 18 years ago to prevent the murder spree from beginning, and in so doing befriends the vulnerable Kayo Hinazuki (Rinka Kakihara). It is in his scenes with Kayo that young Satoru really shines and this fantastic actor will certainly tug at your heart strings in his desperate plight to protect his new friend and let her know she is not alone.

Erased ’s cinematography is hugely impressive, with the repeated shots of smoke billowing out of industrial chimneys against a variety of skies punctuating the action down on the ground. Snow is a big feature of the show’s aesthetic, too, with the school yard in 1988 covered in a thick blanket of snow. Some of the shots in the school’s playground between Satoru and Kayo are truly breath taking; the images of the brilliant white snow wonderfully counterbalance the warmth that Satoru and his mother offer those in danger and it is as though every moment Satoru spends with Kayo could be stopped in a picture-perfect freezeframe.

7 Absolutely Fun Time Travel Asian Dramas You Should Watch

Time travel stories are universally loved around the world! Hollywood is overflowing with them: the famed Back to the Future series, sci-fi films like Star Trek and X-Men , or rom-coms such as Hugh Jackman’s Kate & Leopold . Time travel Asian dramas have also grown popular.

My favorite aspect of these time-bending tales is the fish-out-of-water fun ensuing when a person deals with the inevitable time-shock from visiting the past or the future.

RELATED: The Scribe of Siena – Outlander Fans Will Enjoy this Time Travel Romance

Time travel stories are especially perfect for the romance genre. After all, it brings out the angsty and heart-rending idea that time is literally opposing two people from being together. Over the years I’ve seen many Korean/Chinese variations of time-travel romances – so now I can share seven exciting, crazy and fun time travel Asian dramas!

Update: We updated streaming availability in July 2019.

7 Fun and Romantic Time Travel Asian Dramas

(in alphabetical order), 1. bu bu jing xin.

Bu-Bu-Jing-Xin/Scarlet Heart; ; 7 Absolutely Fun and Romantic Time Travel Asian Dramas You Should Watch

Other Titles: Scarlet Heart, Startling by Each Step

Country: China

Synopsis: Zhang Xiao didn’t ask to be transported back to the Xing Dynasty. But after a terrible accident, she awakens in the body of a girl named Ruo Xi.

Set during the 18 th century of Emperor Kangxi’s reign, Ruo Xi becomes entangled in a battle for the throne amongst Kangxi’s many sons. Will Ruo Xi fall for the kind, quiet 8 th prince destined to die early or the enigmatic, intense 4 th Prince who will take his father’s throne no matter the cost?

Why You Should Check It Out: This extremely popular Chinese time travel drama is gorgeously filmed, subtly acted, and epically dramatic.

Ruo Xi is a likable heroine and her struggles feel relatable as she strives to fit in the harsh royal palace. This is definitely more of an angsty drama with a gray storyline that refuses to define any characters as merely good or bad.

The rain scene with Ruo Xi kneeling outside and 4 th prince covering her with his cloak is one of many striking scenes in the drama and my favorite. What’s not to love in this reverse harem drama?

Where You Can Find It: Viki, DVD.

Faith-Poster; ; 7 Absolutely Fun and Romantic Time Travel Asian Dramas You Should Watch

Other Titles: The Great Doctor

Country: Korea

Synopsis: When Queen Noguk is gravely wounded, King Gongmin sends his best warrior, Choi Young, through a mysterious portal into what they believe is “heaven” in search of a heavenly doctor.

Choi Young finds Dr. Yoo Eun-Soo a plastic surgeon and takes her back to the past. Yoo Eun-Soo becomes trapped in the past until the portal opens again. But with a hunky warrior love interest and deadly political enemies after her, will she be able to return?

Why You Should Check It Out: Faith is a super fun, exciting romp set during the 14 th century of Korea with sword fights, intense political intrigue, poisoning baddies, and more.

I loved both of the romantic love stories with spunky Eun-Soo and stoic Choi Young and between the arranged marriage of Queen Noguk and King Gongmin.

I love the acting choices and feel like each actor suited his/her role. My biggest fault with this drama was the baddies could’ve been more menacing. And a few anticlimactic fight scenes left me wanting more.

However, I love the characters and romance in this drama and have re-watched my favorite scenes more times than I will admit!

Where You Can Find It: Viki. You can also buy on Amazon Video or DVD.

3. Jade Palace Lock Heart

Palace; ; 7 Absolutely Fun and Romantic Time Travel Asian Dramas You Should Watch

Synopsis: Luo Qingchuan is a sweet, history-loving girl who accidentally gets transported in time to the 18 th century during Emperor Kangxi’s reign. She gets caught in a love triangle between the 4 th and 8 th prince. Will she choose the man with all the power or the prince who won’t survive for long?

Why You Should Check It Out: Okay, so yes this is almost the exact same story as Bu Bu Jing Xin. Only Palace feels like night and day difference as it’s a much zanier, light-hearted fare.

This version, though, is pretty manic and exaggerated. And worse there aren’t as many princes who fall for Quingchan! Honestly, I watched this drama for Feng Shaofeng who is adorable even as he plays the often self-centered 8 th Prince.

This one definitely has more laughs and cheerful moments than Bu Bu Jing Xin . And amazingly enough, it does end happily. Now, how did they pull that off?

Where You Can Find It : Currently Unavailable

4. Queen In-Hyun’s Man

Queen In-Hyun's Man. 7 Absolutely Fun and Romantic Time Travel Asian Dramas You Should Watch

Synopsis: Kim Boong-Do is a young nobleman in the 17th century, protecting the deposed Queen In-Hyun. A friend gives Boong-Do a protection charm and Boong-Do is magically transported to modern Korea anytime he’s in life-threatening danger.

There he meets Choi Hee-Jin, a struggling actress, and a relationship starts to blossom. Can they truly be together, though? Or will fate intervene?

Why You Should Check It Out: Oh my goodness, this is probably my number one choice for an entertaining, romantic time travel drama!!

Queen In-Hyun’s Man is a wonderful blend of intense historical drama and light, breezy rom-com. The story bounces back and forth between the 17 th century with the scholar Kim Boong-Do and in modern times with adorable, spunky actress Choi Hee-Jin, yet never feels unbalanced.

The romantic chemistry is absolutely crackling in this drama and leaves us with a PERFECT couple.

Where You Can Find It: DVD

5. Rooftop Prince

Rooftop Prince; 7 Absolutely Fun and Romantic Time Travel Asian Dramas You Should Watch

Synopsis: The Crown Prince of Joseon desperately searches for his wife’s killer along with three loyal servants and gets transported into the future. He meets Park Ha and ends up staying at her apartment with his three servants.

Things complicate when the Crown Prince is mistaken for a rich business heir and he finds a girl who may be the reincarnation of his wife. Will he be able to untangle this mystery? And before he falls in love with Park Ha?

Why You Should Check It Out: This is a hilarious, off-beat time travel drama that totally won me over with its cute and crazy fish-out-of-water story.

The Crown Prince and his three buddies are absolutely golden, reacting to modern-day wonders such as zippers on jackets and TV.

Sadly, the show turned more melodramatic in the second half almost transforming into an office drama. The super-cute romance between Park Ha and the Crown Prince kept me around even with all the reincarnations going on which left viewers with some ambiguous moments near the end.

I’ve re-watched Episode Two a handful of times and it doesn’t fail to put a smile on my face.

Where You Can Find It: Viki, DVD

6. Splash Splash Love

Splash Splash Love; 7 Absolutely Fun and Romantic Time Travel Asian Dramas You Should Watch

Other Titles: Splish Splash Love

Synopsis: Dan Bi has been prepping for her college aptitude test but stress forces her to not show up for the test. She ends up slipping through time to the 15 th century where a young King Sejong rules.

She helps the king who has an unquestionable thirst for science and it’s not long before serious romantic feelings start brewing. But Dan Bi has to return to her home and her mom who’s waiting for her…

Why You Should Check It Out: With only two episodes, Splash Splash Love is more like a delightful 2-hour movie. Hilarious, emotional and unabashedly romantic, this drama blew past my expectations and left me with a lot of happy feels.

Dan Bi and the king bring together a fun if not adorable romance. Everything came together perfectly, including the secondary characters. This is a K-drama at its sweetest and finest.

Where You Can Find It: Viki

7. Time Slip Dr. Jin

Dr. Jin; 7 Absolutely Fun and Romantic Time Travel Asian Dramas You Should Watch

Other Titles: Dr. Jin

Synopsis: Jin Hyuk is an extremely skilled doctor with a pretty girlfriend. But life takes a turn when his girlfriend gets in an accident and Jin Hyuk gets transported to the 19 th century.

There he associates with a nobleman who turns out to be the future Royal Prince Regent and an idealist girl who might be the reincarnation of his girlfriend. This doctor has his hands full of plagues, sicknesses, rudimentary medical tools and war brewing in the air.

Why You Should Check It Out: The pros of this time travel drama – a look at a fascinating time during the Joseon dynasty in the late 1800s with the 1871 Battle of Ganghwa with American forces, early persecution of Catholics, and the rise of the Prince Regent Heungseon into power.

However, the drama itself is manic and confusing with really no resolution by the end. The main leads are boring and difficult to empathize with. But the supporting cast fascinates with the clever, multi-layered Prince Regent, the charming lady Gisaeng (similar to a geisha), the angsty, tortured police captain and his best friend who’s secretly a rebellion leader.

Sadly, the ridiculous and unbelievable overshadows much of the good in this drama. But overall, it’s still a fun watch.

Thanks for this lovely list! I’m watching Bu Bu Jing Xin, even though I’m not good at handling unhappy endings, because my friend told me it doesn’t end there. Apparently in the sequel, Bu Bu Jing Qing (scarlet heart 2), things look up for our main couple. It’s also cute that the leads are a couple in real life (Nicky Wu and Cecilia Liu)! I plan to watch Queen In-Hyun’s Man soon! And one day, Rooftop Prince too.

You’re welcome! Yes, that’s true – I’d forgotten about that but Scarlet Heart 2 came out in 2014 so there is hope for the main couple! And it is adorable that they became a real life couple after doing two dramas together. 😀 I’m certain you’ll love Queen In-Hyun’s Man and Rooftop Prince is super funny!

The unnecessary unhappy ending of Rooftop Prince spoiled it for me

Can you give me a recommendation about historical drama?

Absolutely! For period dramas, my personal favorite is A Tree With Deep Roots . The story is riveting with assassins of a secret organization trying to stop the king from creating a Korean alphabet (and thus changing society by allowing everyone a chance to read). The main hero is out for revenge against the king as well. This drama is intense and addictive from beginning to the end. It’s only 24 episodes, so not too long.

Queen Seondeok would be my second favorite. This one is 62 episodes, so its extremely long, but its an epic story of a girl becoming a queen without a husband. Plus she’s surrounded by handsome loyal bodyguards (who make up the supporting characters). 😀

Other recommendations: Arang and the Magistrate (fantasy/historical. It really feels like a fairy tale.) The Princess’ Man (fantastic quality, super intense but great acting) Three Musketeers (wonderful balance of drama, humor, adventure and danger) Empress Ki (51 episodes but Ha Ji-Won is a wonderful actress and really sells the story of a young woman who becomes the queen of a foreign country) I’m also currently watching Jackpot (also known as Daebak) which is a beautifully shot drama. I’m loving the bromance between the main hero and the young prince.

These sound fun, especially Splash, Splash Love 🙂

Splash Splash Love is definitely a favorite of mine!

The list is incomplete without the KDrama “Nine: Nine Times Time Travel”. Please do not miss out on it ^^

I was looking for that!

Thank you :))

This list seriously needs the drama Go Princess Go I recommend it to everyone who <3 comedy romance time travel period dramas

Soompi & Viki Staff Talk: What Is Your Favorite Time Travel K-Drama?

Soompi & Viki Staff Talk: What Is Your Favorite Time Travel K-Drama?

When it comes to fantasy dramas, time travel has been a much-loved theme among the years. For the next edition of the Soompi & Viki Staff Talk series, our team members discuss our favorite K-dramas that feature time traveling.

Here are our picks!

Warning: minor spoilers ahead

Sala: “ Alice ”

time travel jdrama

Although I haven’t watched many K-dramas about time travel, I remember “Alice” because of its talented cast. “Alice” is about Park Jin Gyeom ( Joo Won ), an emotionless detective searching for his mother’s killer who ends up investigating time traveling assassins who use a mysterious device called “Alice.” In the process, he meets Yoon Tae Yi ( Kim Hee Sun ), a genius physicist who looks exactly like his mother. I can’t give away much without delving into spoilers, but the element of time travel and mystery in this drama will have you on the edge of your seat the entire ride, and if you’re a fan of sci-fi, this is the drama for you! Although the story does take some unexpected twists and turns in an effort to weave an intricate story, the convincing acting delivered by the talented leads Joo Won and Kim Hee Sun will keep you immersed until the end. There are also jaw-dropping plot twists incorporating time travel, tying together a mindblowing story of the past, present, and not-so-distant future.

Watch “Alice” below:

Ginny: “ Go Back Couple ”

time travel jdrama

In “Go Back Couple,” Choi Ban Do ( Son Ho Jun ) and Ma Jin Joo ( Jang Nara ) are unhappily married and struggle through their daily lives of making a living and raising a child. Just when they feel like their marriage is coming to an end, they wake up and find themselves as 20-year-old college students, getting the chance to enjoy campus life again. Back in college, ROTC student Jung Nam Gil ( Jang Ki Yong ) actively pursues Jin Joo, while Ban Do works to develop his relationship with his first love Min Seo Young ( Go Bo Gyeol ). Given a second chance on life, will they make different decisions this time, or will they overcome their difficulties together? It’s a must-watch time travel drama that will bring you plenty of smiles and tears!

Watch “Go Back Couple” below:

Sehee: “ Reborn Rich ”

time travel jdrama

Imagine getting the chance to rise to the top to take revenge on those who did you and your family wrong. “Reborn Rich” takes you on a rollercoaster ride as Yoon Hyun Woo ( Song Joong Ki ) dies after being framed by the chaebol family he faithfully served as secretary and is reborn as the family’s youngest son Jin Do Joon. In his new life, he patiently pursues a strategy of massive retaliation against the family. The drama is filled with tension, action, and thrill with a sprinkle of romance. If you enjoy dramas that keep you at the edge of your seat like I do, this is the one for you!

Watch “Reborn Rich” below:

Natalie: “ Mr. Queen ”

time travel jdrama

One of the most dramatic K-dramas about time traveling has to be “Mr. Queen,” adventuring back and forth not mere years but centuries! Due to mysterious fate, modern-day male chef Jang Bong Hwan ( Choi Jin Hyuk ) wakes up in the body of Joseon queen Kim So Yong ( Shin Hye Sun ), forcing him to cope with not only change of sex, but more significantly, his duties as the people’s queen and the king’s wife. Clueless of who and where she (or he?) is, Kim So Yong’s strange demeanor is more than enough to raise countless eyebrows in the royal court of Joseon. Nevertheless, she finds her way through Joseon’s old-timey ways, bravely adjusting to the sudden changes that surround her (or him… still confused). “Mr. Queen” is a pleasant fusion of mystery, fantasy, comedy, and even romance, so it’s safe to say it has a bit of everything you want in a K-Drama. One of my personal favorites was when Queen So Yong finds out that she is pregnant with the baby of King Cheol Jong ( Kim Jung Hyun ). What’s supposed to be a merry and blissful moment turns hilarious as the originally male queen copes with the fact that he has a literal human growing inside of his womb! There’s really no reason to waste time not watching this drama—10/10 would recommend!

Watch “Mr. Queen” below:

JJin: “ Blue Birthday ”

time travel jdrama

In “Blue Birthday,” Oh Ha Rin ( Yeri ) burns photos taken 10 years ago in high school in order to save her first love Ji Seo Jun ( Hongseok ), who died on her 18th birthday. Although the plot sounds tragic, this drama is filled with many heart-fluttering moments and close friendship among the main characters. Additionally, the time-traveling narrative unquestionably highlights and deepens the romance between the leads. You won’t get bored watching the drama not only because Oh Ha Rin constantly keeps finding undiscovered stories but also because of plot twists surrounding Ji Seo Jun’s sudden death. If you love the fantasy genre and believe that dramas shouldn’t be too realistic like I do, “Blue Birthday” is definitely worth a watch.

Watch “Blue Birthday” below:

Winnie: “ Again My Life ”

time travel jdrama

Even if you think you’ve seen enough of dramas about time traveling, the addition of terrific action scenes, a lawless lawyer, and revenge makes “Again My Life” a fresh experience worth watching. In this series, Lee Joon Gi plays the role of Kim Hee Woo, who was unjustly killed while investigating a corrupt politician. Luckily, he unexpectedly travels back 15 years into the past after getting a second chance at life, and he decides to live a bit differently this time. What really enhances this drama is Lee Joon Gi’s impressive acting, as he interpreted the roles before and after the reincarnation very delicately.

Watch “Again My Life” below:

Somni: “ Familiar Wife ”

time travel jdrama

Starring Ji Sung and Han Ji Min, “Familiar Wife” is a fantasy romance drama that teaches a very important life lesson to not be deceived by familiarity and to not lose the precious one next to you. Cha Joo Hyuk ( Ji Sung ), who married Seo Woo Jin ( Han Ji Min ), gets tired of his wife’s temper as she always yells at him for not doing the housework. One day, Joo Hyuk happens to attain two magical coins that can take him back to the past, and he decides to use them to change his life by marrying his first love Lee Hye Won ( Kang Han Na ) instead of Woo Jin. Although Joon Hyuk is happy living a prosperous life with Hye Won, he keeps getting entangled with Woo Jin and finds himself being attracted to her. If you are feeling that the person next to you is less important now, “Familiar Wife” is a drama that can enlighten you that it may not be the people around you that changed but your attitude toward them. Although we cannot go back in time and change our lives even if we wanted to, let’s not forget the precious time and memories we spent with the people who have always been there for us!

Watch “Familiar Wife” below:

Yeon: “ Tomorrow With You ”

time travel jdrama

Although I am usually not fond of time travel dramas, there is one time travel drama that I never get tired of watching. “Tomorrow With You” tells the story of time traveler Yoo So Joon ( Lee Je Hoon ) who ends up marrying the bubbly Song Ma Rin ( Shin Min Ah ) to prevent an unfortunate event he sees in the future. Although the marriage begins with this purpose, they gradually fall in love and work to protect their love and each other from darkness ahead. Yoo So Joon travels through time by riding a subway, and this is portrayed in a quite realistic way that can even attract viewers like me who tend to shy away from the fantasy genre. More than anything, Lee Je Hoon and Shin Min Ah’s chemistry really adds spark to this drama and is what hooked me immediately. They portray an incredibly lovable couple that is impossible not to fall for!

To which William responded that Kate is “doing well.” When asked about his children—George, Charlotte, and Louis—William joked: “The children are very jealous that I am here… Maybe we might come later in the year.”

The rare update comes after the Princess of Wales announced in a video message that she had been diagnosed with cancer after a planned abdominal surgery. Kate said in the video, which was released by Kensington Palace on March 22, that the news was a “huge shock.” She began a course of “ preventative chemotherapy ” in late February, according to a Kensington Palace spokesperson.

“I am well and getting stronger every day,” Kate said in the video message.

During the royal visit on Friday, hospital matron Lynda McHale gave Prince William a card for his wife and father, King Charles III, who announced his own diagnosis of an undisclosed type of cancer in February and officially returned to public duties in late April.

“It was a card from my granddaughter who wanted to wish his father and wife ‘get well soon,’ ” McHale said, as reported by Sky News.

The Duke Of Cornwall Visits The Isles Of Scilly

Before the video announcement in March, Kate hadn’t been seen at a public engagement since Christmas Day, prompting widespread speculation about her whereabouts. In her filmed  message, Kate said that she and her family needed time to process her diagnosis before sharing it with the public.

“It has taken time for me to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment,” she said.“But most importantly it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them and to reassure them that I am going to be OK.”

William met with hospital staff on Friday to learn about plans for a new integrated health and social care facility, meant to improve the range of care provided and allow people to receive care close to them rather than having to travel to the mainland. The new building is scheduled to open by next summer, according to BBC .

‘Outer Range’ Is a Dizzying Sci-Fi Drama, With Buffalo

The second season of this Amazon series, all of which is available now, cranks up both the time-travel and the outrageous soapiness.

A woman and man ride horses over a green terrain.

By Margaret Lyons

Season 1 of “Outer Range,” on Amazon , was intriguing and unsatisfying — lush, expansive and compelling, but also marred by abundant faux-deep nonsense and a total lack of resolution. It’s a “this is my family’s land, grumble grumble” ranch drama ostensibly starring Josh Brolin, but the real star of the show is a big hole. And not just any hole — a magic hole! A hole that transports you through time! Sometimes people disappear. Sometimes the hole disappears.

I happily devoured that first season but didn’t think I cared much about it. And yet, I kept thinking about “Outer Range” in the two years since its debut. When I watched other shows in which people dejectedly shook their heads, slowly put on their cowboy hats and then sadly — maybe … sexy-sadly? — stammered wisdom, I thought, “What ever happened to that hole show?” When I saw other dramas include bar fights that went way wrong, I wondered, “Is that the exterior of that bar from that hole show?” What was that other series where people were constantly tripping on earthy psychedelics? Where did I just see that actress play a different zany lady? Ah, right: the hole show.

I don’t know if Season 2, which premiered last week, rewards my devotion per se, but I also marathoned its seven episodes, bouncing between enchantment and eye-rolling. I love my dumb show! Sometimes you just want to see a Native American sheriff fall into a hole, travel back to 1882, reconnect with her Shoshone ancestors, meet another time traveler à la “Outlander,” come back to the present day and be driven to the hospital by Josh Brolin under tense circumstances. Sometimes you want to see people’s eyes go black like in that episode of “The X-Files” with the snake lady. There’s something invigorating about a show that just does not care if the actors playing the younger and older versions of the same person resemble one another whatsoever.

“Outer Range” emphasized drama over sci-fi in Season 1, but Season 2, all of which is available now, cranks up both the time-travel-portal aspect and the outrageous soapiness. The hole is less a profound mystery and more an incredibly handy mechanism for creating bananas telenovela moments. I’m your son! Or I didn’t die! Or I’m … you! Work your magic, magic hole.

The show loves its musings and mantras about time. “Time doesn’t have a beginning or an end, it just is,” we’re told. “Time is a river.” “Time reveals all.” Such lines are fine on their own, though they inevitably recall “time is a flat circle,” the “True Detective” quote that has become synonymous with TV shows getting high on their own supply.

The performances in “Outer Range” hail from different planets. Brolin grounds his work as Royal, who is secretly a time-traveler from the 1800s, in a simmering, fragile stoicism, whereas Lili Taylor, as his long-suffering wife, channels the aggression and frustration of a Melissa McCarthy character. Imogen Poots is the dreamy, dangerous boho blonde, out of the “Orphan Black” Rolodex of crazy sages, while Shaun Sipos and Noah Reid, as embittered brothers, would be at home in “The Righteous Gemstones.”

But oh, what fun. What menace. What a total bonanza. “Outer Range” has so much to give, even if some of that is time-loop baloney. Are we perhaps spinning on an axis rather than rolling forward, story-wise? Well, what of it? I’m too dizzy to care.

SIDE QUESTS

If you like “Outer Range” but want a different mystical-blonde-lady show that is also unsatisfying, “The OA” calls to you. ( Netflix )

It is with deep irritation I report that “The 4400” (the original version) is not streaming at the moment, but I hope that will change. That show, in which 4,400 people who vanished at various points in history have all returned at once, shares a lot with this one. “The 4400” was more of a welterweight drama than big epic, but it was a summery good time for a while.

Buffalo are central figures in “Outer Range,” so I thought often about the fantastic two-part documentary “The American Buffalo.” ( PBS Passport )

If you like expansive-landscape shows in which crusty people make strange decisions, but you want one where they actually do call a lawyer at some point instead of flailing their way through the legal system unguided, watch “Goliath.” ( Amazon and Freevee )
