Employees celebrate 'back to school' with Children's Learning Center

The Dunham Children’s Learning Center hosted a “back to school” employee engagement event for employees whose children attend the on-campus early childhood education center.

Designed to help welcome and connect the center’s employee parents, the event provided photos ops with the Wildcat.

Hillary Hofstrom, vice president of people and culture at the college, whose departments include the Children’s Learning Center, noted the shortfall in the number of qualified early care and education providers across the U.S.

“Our country is facing a child care shortage crisis, so having this service here on our campus for our students and employees is a great benefit for them to know their children have reliable and excellent care and education for their little ones while they are at work and/or school,” Hofstrom said.

As Voyager 1's mission draws to a close, one planetary scientist reflects on its legacy

by Daniel Strain, University of Colorado at Boulder

Voyager 1

For nearly 50 years, NASA's Voyager 1 mission has competed for the title of deep space's little engine that could. Launched in 1977 along with its twin, Voyager 2, the spacecraft is now soaring more than 15 billion miles from Earth.

On their journeys through the solar system , the Voyager spacecraft beamed startling images back to Earth—of Jupiter and Saturn, then Uranus and Neptune and their moons. Voyager 1's most famous shot may be what famed astronomer Carl Sagan called the "pale blue dot," a lonely image of Earth taken from 6 billion miles away in 1990.

But Voyager 1's trek could now be drawing to a close. Since December, the spacecraft--which weighs less than most cars--has been sending nonsensical messages back to Earth, and engineers are struggling to fix the problem. Voyager 2 remains operational.

Fran Bagenal is a planetary scientist at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at CU Boulder. She started working on the Voyager mission during a summer student job in the late 1970s and has followed the two spacecraft closely since.

To celebrate Voyager 1, Bagenal reflects on the mission's legacy—and which planet she wants to visit again.

Many are impressed that the spacecraft has kept going for this long. Do you agree?

Voyager 1's computer was put together in the 1970s, and there are very few people around who still use those computing languages. The communication rate is 40 bits per second. Not megabits. Not kilobits. Forty bits per second. Moreover, the round-trip communication time is 45 hours. It's amazing that they're still communicating with it at all.

What was it like working on Voyager during the mission's early days?

At the very beginning, we used computer punch cards. The data was on magnetic tapes, and we would print out line-plots on reels of paper. It was very primitive.

But planet by planet, with each flyby, the technology got a lot more sophisticated. By the time we got to Neptune in 1989, we were doing our science on much more efficient computers, and NASA presented its results live across the globe over an early version of the internet.

Think about it—going from punch cards to the internet in 12 years.

How did the Voyager spacecraft shape our understanding of the solar system?

First of all, the pictures were jaw-dropping. They were the first high-quality, close-up pictures of the four gas giant planets and their moons. The Voyagers really revolutionized our thinking by going from one planet to the other and comparing them.

Jupiter and Saturn's ammonia white and orange clouds, for example, were violently swept around by strong winds, while Uranus and Neptune's milder weather systems were hidden and colored blue by atmospheric methane. But the most dramatic discoveries were the multiple distinct worlds of the different moons, from Jupiter's cratered Callisto and volcanic Io to Saturn's cloudy Titan to plumes erupting on Triton, a moon of Neptune.

The Jupiter and Saturn systems have since been explored in greater detail by orbiting missions—Galileo and Juno at Jupiter, Cassini at Saturn.

As Voyager 1's mission draws to a close, one planetary scientist reflects on its legacy

Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft that has visited Uranus and Neptune. Do we need to return?

My vote is to return to Uranus—the only planet in our solar system that's tipped on its side.

We didn't know before Voyager whether Uranus had a magnetic field. When we arrived, we found that Uranus has a magnetic field that's severely tilted with respect to the planet's rotation. That's a weird magnetic field.

Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune all emit a lot of heat from the inside. They glow in the infrared, emitting two and a half times more energy than they receive from the sun. These things are hot.

Uranus isn't the same. It doesn't have this internal heat source. So maybe, just maybe, at the end of the formation of the solar system billions of years ago, some big object hit Uranus, tipped it on its side, stirred it up and dissipated the heat. Perhaps, this led to an irregular magnetic field .

These are the sorts of questions that were raised by Voyager 30 years ago. Now we need to go back.

Culturally, Voyager 1's most lasting impact may be the 'pale blue dot.' Why?

I have huge respect for Carl Sagan. I met him when I was 16, a high school student in England, and I shook his hand.

He pointed to the Voyager image and said, "Here we are. We're leaving the solar system. We're looking back, and there's this pale blue dot. That's us. It's all our friends. It's all our relatives. It's where we live and die."

This was the time we were just beginning to say, "Wait a minute. What are we doing to our planet Earth?" He was awakening or reinforcing this need to think about what humans are doing to Earth. It also evoked why we need to go exploring space: to think about where we are and how we fit into the solar system.

How are you feeling now that Voyager 1's mission may be coming to an end?

It's amazing. No one thought they would go this far. But with just a few instruments working, how much longer can we keep going? I think it will soon be time to say, "Right, jolly good. Extraordinary job. Well done."

Our toddler has been attending CLCC for about half a year now, and we could not have been happier. We are constantly amazed to discover the many things she has learnt to do as such a little person. Having gone through the day care search process and researched/ called / visited dozens of them in Seattle, I realized how difficult it was to find a pleasant & reliable care provider as a first-time parent, and I feel so grateful to have my child enrolled at CLCC, a gem in the U District that stands out among its peers. Here are a few highlights that come on top of my mind: 1. The teachers and staff express genuine affection and interest in the children. I can see my child feels very happy and safe around them. Even on her first day, my 15-month old quickly established connection with her teachers. And within a few weeks, she became very much attached to them and was even interacting cheerfully with the teachers from the elder classrooms. 2. Diverse activities throughout the day to engage the children in learning, singing, dancing, art, walking around the campus, reading books, etc and I love it that they encourage the kids to express themselves in different activities and social scenarios. They thoughtfully kept a collection of my toddler's "art work" over the past few month to bring home, which is cute and precious. 3. The children learn to practise a lot of basic life skills in their daily routine. From taking off jacket/shoes and placing them in the right place in the morning, to sitting properly for meals/snacks at table, cleaning up after meal, washing hands before/after meals, to taking out blanket for afternoon nap, etc. I was totally impressed when I watched a roomful of kids doing these all by themselves at a lunch visit. 4. Very accessible & responsive administration. Michelle, the director, was really fast at responding to enrolment inquiries and scheduling a tour for me(before finding CLCC, I contacted some other daycare centers that respond very slowly or sound impatient, and ask for a waiting list fee ). Fabulous job in efficiently maintaining the wait list and for replying to emails and answering the phone calls quickly. It really means a lot for parents that are anxious to nail down a good care. 5. Though it is a program of the UCUCC church, they are open to the entire community and not limited to church members, and, they don't impose religious content in the curriculum. As a non-religious person, I feel grateful to the UCUCC and the entire staff for running this excellent program and making it available to the entire community. Thanks to all the CLCC teachers and staff for your good work. Please keep it up and keep it rolling !

This daycare is an absolute nightmare. The staff could care less and I've personally seen them being aggressive handling the children there. The headmaster "Becky" is a real nightmare to deal with - she has no tolerance for slightly difficult children and will expel them instead of trying to help them. Trettin is not a place of joy and happiness - it a place of grumpy staff, teachers who would rather play on their cell phones during "nap time" than help children take a nap, and a staff that clearly hold grudges against children they don't like. Also, CPS has an open claim against a former staff member concerning alleged child abuse. Absolutely would not recommend this establishment for your child's daycare.

Amazing program. My daughter attended for 3 years and she still reminisces about her experience there even though she left two years ago. I always felt she was safe and well cared for and we keep in touch with some of her teachers still. I highly recommend this care center.

Photo of Beth A.

We sent our two daughters here for a year when our youngest was just under two, and our oldest was just over three, and they had an amazing program - so amazing that we tried to go back after some childcare juggling/financial issues. It didn't work out, which I'm bummed about, but I think it says something when you've had to leave a daycare after a job loss and then want to come back as soon as you can! Their staff was so kind to both of our girls, and the girls academic and social skills grew tremendously while we were there - it's been two years since we left, and my youngest daughter still writes her symbol on all of her paperwork (which they use in lieu of names on personal items because very young children respond to them more easily). I can't speak to the room that houses the oldest kids in the center, but the rooms for the two younger children were always well-staffed, always had a healthy breakfast available for kids that needed it, and they got a lot of *play* time, which is really important to me. The kids take a lot of walks and go on a monthly field trip (or more, in some cases) to places like the Burke Museum or parks across the city - it delighted me that they were so well-prepared to help introduce my kids to a very urban neighborhood - I didn't realize how much I valued that beforehand, but my kids are now very comfortable riding buses, taking long walks, interacting with other kids at parks, and hanging out at museums! :-) Really, I don't have enough good things to say about their program - their staff were all warm and caring and that spilled over into relationships among the families that go there. Our kids met some of their best friends at CLCC, and we, by extension, have met some of ours. Of course, no center is perfect, and I am sure that there are some things that could have gone better (as I recall, the parking was a little difficult!) but they were so minor and now, having been to four different daycares for either full-time or part-time or summer camp care, CLCC stands out as the most well-run, and most community-oriented childcare center we stumbled across. If you can, get on the waitlist now, and if you can get in, do it! :-) You'll be glad you did.

This place was a godsend for us. My granddaughter went there for almost 2.5 years and we were constantly thrilled and amazing with what CLCC staff did with the kids. It is all about experiences here -- there are field trips at least once a month (and often more than that) where they take the kids on the city buses to museums, parks all over the city, to the ferries that they take to various islands, and to free lunchtime concerts downtown. The kids also WALK around the neighborhood, to nearby parks, and to the UW campus. It is not unusual for the older kids to walk 3-4 miles in a day. The teachers are mature and engaged with the children, and we always felt like we were leaving my granddaughter in good hands. She loved the Center and the teachers, and we were all sad when it was time to say goodbye and take the next step to kindergarten.
