The Kinks | The Journey – Part 1 – Compilation Review

the kinks the journey part 1 recensione

I’m not sure you’re likely to find a better bunch of songs to enjoy than a collection of early tunes from the Kinks. One of the greatest ever British rock groups, part of the initial British Invasion, this band produced a sometimes poppy, often-times slicing sound countering their often-wry commentary on the culture, which was far more tongue-in-cheek than either the Beatles or the Rolling Stones.

The Journey – Part 1, featuring prime Kinks cuts from 1964 through 1975, accurately captures the group’s essence and brilliance. Included are early singles like “All Day And All Of The Night, “You Really Got Me,” and “Tired Of Waiting,” alongside lesser-known tracks, like the barrel-house piano-led “Who’ll Be The Next In Line,” and “Dandy,” a minor hit for the Kinks in Europe, but much bigger in the U.S. when Herman’s Hermits covered it in 1966.

There’s a sprinkling of latter-day numbers like “Shangri-La” from 1969’s Arthur (Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire) with its cool horn backing, and the 1972 single “Supersonic Rocketship,” featuring steel drum and Ray Davies’ steel resonator guitar. Besides Davies being one of rock’s greatest songwriters, you have to recognize what a tight little unit the Kinks were with Davies singing, his brother Dave flailing about on guitar, Pete Quaife’s subtle bass popping, and Mick Avory’s on-point drumming.

The Davies brothers and Avory choose the songs for this 26-song collection to mark the Kinks 60th anniversary. The Journey – Part 2   will follow later in 2023. With a stunning history that includes over 50 million records sold worldwide, enjoying five U.S. Top 10 singles, nine U.S. Top 40 albums, 17 UK Top 20 singles and five UK Top 10 albums, any time is a good time to celebrate the music of the Kinks.

The Kinks: The Journey – Part 1

the kinks the journey part 1 recensione

Puro rock’n’roll anni 60, esattamente come la successiva “All day and all of the night”, brani brevi, incisivi e graffianti con le chitarre protagoniste per tutta la durata dei pezzi.

ALBUM REVIEW: The Kinks – The Journey – Part 1

The Kinks – The Journey – Part 1

The Kinks marked their 60th anniversary as a band this year by kicking off the first part of a two-year celebration. The Journey – Part 1 , a two-disc compilation marks the beginning of that celebration. The album features songs handpicked by Ray Davies, Dave Davies and Mick Avory, that look to appeal not only to the die-hard established followers but also to new audiences, curious to see what The Kinks were really about.

The Kinks, having been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 have a wealth of songs spanning over a highly influential 30-year period, boasting 24 albums and some of the most recognisable and highly influential songs of all time.

Formed initially as a rhythm and blues band back in 1963, The Kinks took over the airwaves with their number 1 hit “You Really Got Me”. Its unmistakably solid punk chords, punchy lyrics and simplistic to-the-point style composition is still considered to have been ahead of its time when it was released. This provided not only the bands’ big break but also went on to be hugely significant for bands such as The Who, bands part of the mid-1960s American Punk scene and even those within the realms of heavy metal.

This song, accompanied by their debut album, put them at the forefront of the famed ‘British Invasion’ and on the pathway to being one of the greatest British acts of all time, alongside the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who.

Now when it comes to a collection of songs like this, many people initially think cynically. The world of ‘Greatest Hits’ can sometimes be a lacklustre terrain to navigate through. Lucky for us, Ray Davies has addressed this, stating – “Ask yourself the question, is this journey really necessary?……. Yes!” – and we at XS Noize can’t help but agree! In a more politically put statement, Dave Davies added, “I’m delighted with what I think is an inspiring selection of timeless and magical Kinks music.”

The Journey – Part 1 , is divided up into 4 different sections. Unlike other collections like this, we don’t see the Kinks taking songs chronologically, instead, they go by themes, which really makes for quite interesting listening. You get a real feel for what they were trying to say back when the songs were written, and at times this really transforms a song you thought you understood, into something entirely new.

Side one, titled “Songs about becoming a man, the search for adventure, finding an identity and a girl” focuses on their more rocky sound. It shows them at their ‘British Invasion’ best with songs such as “You Really Got Me” and “Tired Of Waiting For You”. It’s a powerful way to open the album, it’s an opening made to encourage you to turn the speakers up and strap yourself in for the ride.

Side two, titled “Songs of ambition achieved, bitter taste of success, loss of friends, the past comes back and bites you in the backside” dives into Ray Davies’ more sceptical view on fame. It’s here we find a few songs from the album ‘The Kinks Present Schoolboys In Disgrace’ (“The Hard Way”, “School Days” and “I’m A Disgrace) alongside classics such as “Dead End Street”. It’s a change of pace from side one – but one that keeps you hooked with some real gems and gets you eager to throw on the 3 rd part of The Journey.

Side three is assigned the title “Days and nights of a lost soul, songs of regret and reflection of happier times”, which delivers classics such as “Strangers” and “Days”. It’s here we see The Kinks also really show their lesser-known classics in order to pull in some new listeners – who maybe crave something more than the well-recognized hits. They showcase “Sitting In The Midday Sun” – a song that if used as an answer, can guarantee a pass to the “are you a real fan though?” test. You know the one, that tests some of the more protective followers may challenge you with if caught wearing a band T-shirt!

Side four brings the first anthology collection to a close with a bang. Here we find one of the greatest songs ever written “Waterloo Sunset”, a song instantly recognisable and impossible to turn off. The fourth side has been named “A new start, a new love, but have you really changed? Still haunted by the quest and the girl”. Alongside “Waterloo Sunset” we find “No More Looking Back”,  “Celluloid Heroes” and what I feel is a perfect way to end the collection – “Shangri-La”.

The album in all is a refreshing way to approach The Kinks work. It wasn’t just some standard trip down memory lane, hitting all the obvious points in a some dull A to Z tour. It’s framed in an unexpected way, it brings to the forefront some songs possibly forgotten in time or overshadowed by their bigger hits. It provides new meanings to songs we thought we had figured out a long time ago. It brings together a collection for the established fan to re-explore their favourites, but also opens the door for new fans to come in and pick their own favourite tune, rather than be told what that should be.

Graded on a Curve: The Kinks, The Journey Part 1

the kinks the journey part 1 recensione

Over the years, many compilation albums of the music of The Kinks have been released. Reprise Records, the group’s first American record label, famously released the double-album set The Kinks Kronicles in 1972. The impetus behind the release was the group leaving the label and signing with RCA.

Reprise actually created an excellent and still sought after release. The two-LP set included one previously unreleased track and 13 non-album B-sides. Music journalist John Mendelson selected the tracks and contributed liner notes. Reprise had previously released a greatest hits album in 1966. There have been nearly 40 compilation releases of the group’s music from various US and UK labels over the years, representing the good, the bad, the ugly, and unfortunately totally unnecessary.

If The Beatles were the big bang of pop music in the 1960s, The Kinks might represent the next big bang. Just barely before the Rolling Stones and The Who, the group scored hits with an explosive new sound, boasted one of the best ever English pop songwriters (Ray Davies), and quickly grew as witty chroniclers of English life.

This 2-LP, vinyl set includes 30 tracks and there are 36 on the CD set. The vinyl was mastered by Kevin Gray and sounds excellent, especially the many mono tracks. There are liner notes by three of the four original members of the group, Ray Davies, Dave Davies, and Mick Avory, included in the eight-page booklet. The time period is 1964 through 1971, from their self-titled debut album through the soundtrack to Percy .

The four sides are divided up into themes and the tracks are not in chronological order, which, for the most part, works surprisingly well. “Songs about becoming a man, the search for adventure, finding an identity and a girl,” the first side, starts off with two songs (“You Really Got Me” and “All Day and All of the Night”) established the Kinks’ place in ’60s pop, but the rest of side one proves their staying power.

Songs like “Dandy” and “Stop Your Sobbing,” which would become hits for others, are mixed in with better-known songs like “Tired of Waiting For You.” Dave Davies’ “Wait Till The Summer Comes Along” is quite good but gets somewhat lost in the plethora of high-quality Ray Davies compositions. The closing track “So Long” has an English folk rock feel.

Side two “Songs of ambition achieved, bitter taste of success, loss of friends, the past comes back and bites you in the back-side,” takes the theme in a direction that shifts the songs out of chronological order. While it may seem jarring at first to hop from the mid-’60s mod pop of side one, to later in the ’60s and then to the mid-’70s, it does work. “Supersonic” shows Ray in a new phase as a songwriter, interjecting exotic music that sounds a little like the better-known “Apeman.”

“Days and nights of a lost soul, songs of regret and reflection of happier times” oddly sounds like a follow-up to side one. The side starts off in somewhat of a mellow and sophisticated, folky mood. Amidst the lyrical bewildered frustration, Ray’s songs are surprisingly sunny and upbeat, even as he looks back wistfully at better times, perfectly captured on “Days” and “Where Have All the Good Times Gone”—the latter the theme song of golden-age thinking.

Side four “A new start, a new love, but have you really changed? Still haunted by the quest and the girl,” sounds very much like side three, and given the theme, “Waterloo Sunset” and “Celluloid Heroes” simply had to be included here on this side. It’s nice to see Ray end on a positive note with “This Is Where I Belong.” The thematic construct of the set allows for Davies’ songs to be heard in a context that elevates them to their rightful place, as some of the best pop songs ever written in the rock era.

One would think after so many compilation albums of The Kinks, yet another one would not be needed, but this one works on many levels. Part 2 will be released later this year and begins where Part 1 ends, in 1971, the period that began with their first album for RCA, Muswell Hillbillies .

THE KINKS - The Journey, Part 1

There are few bands that can be pointed to as being a trailblazer and/or major contributor to several different rock subgenres. The Kinks are one of the lucky few – who helped create such popular styles as punk rock, heavy metal, and Britpop, among others. And this bold claim is on display throughout the recently-released compilation, The Journey, Part 1.

Although it was the stellar songwriting of singer/guitarist Ray Davies that ‘made’ the Kinks, the contribution of Dave Davies (Ray’s younger brother) cannot be understated – as he was one of the first rock guitarists bold enough to utilize distortion as part of his sound…ultimately paving the way for metal and punk guitarists to replicate and build upon it. Case in point, such early classics as “You Really Got Me” and “All Day And All Of The Night,” which just happen to be the first two tunes on this set.

Spanning the years 1964-1975, most of the expected classics are included (“Waterloo Sunset,” “Where Have All The Good Times Gone,” “Celluloid Heroes,” etc.), as well as overlooked gems (“Who’ll Be The Next In Line,” “Tired Of Waiting For You,” “Death Of A Clown”). Although admittedly, several expected tracks are nowhere to be found (“Lola,” “Sunny Afternoon,” “Apeman,” etc.) – which leads one to believe that Part 2 will include all the missing pieces.

The two Journey sets were assembled by core Kinks Ray and Dave Davies and Mick Avory in commemoration of the band's 60th anniversary.
