In 1940 Prague´s Gestapo installed the Terezin Small Fortress police prison. About 32,000 prisoners passed through the Terezin Small Fortress between 1940 and 1945, Approximately 2,500 people died – some of hunger or disease, while others were overworked, tortured, and executed.  In 1941 the town of Terezin was transformed by the Nazis into a Jewish ghetto-transit camp. Until the end of the war, more than 150,000 deportees came through the camp. Some 35,000 inmates died there. Russian forces liberated Terezin on May 8th, 1945, eight days after Berlin had fallen to the Allies. Today the well-preserved concentration camp stands as a memorial to the dead and a monument to human depravity.

Terezin Small Fortress – Former Gestapo Prison

As you enter the gate of the Terezin concentration camp Small Fortress, a former Gestapo prison, the sign above it, ARBEIT MACHT FREI (Work Sets One Free), sets an eerie and gloomy tone. You will walk through the ghastly prison barracks, the execution grounds where firing squads murdered innocent people, the workshops, the dark solitary confinement cells, and a cemetery that was built after the war, where you can pay homage to the victims of this horrific era.

Afterward, we will drive you to the Terezin Big Fortress, a former Jewish ghetto featuring the Museum of the Terezin Concentration Camp, where you will see many chilling artifacts, such as a collage of drawings by children imprisoned at the camp. Not to be missed is the propaganda movie, which was produced by the Nazis to present Terezin as a “gift” to the Jews from Hitler. This propaganda movie was supposed to dispel rumors about the horrors of life in concentration camps. After visiting the museum, we will drive you around the Big Fortress, show you different buildings and explain their roles during World War II. You will see Nazi headquarters and the headquarters of the Jewish self-administration. You will also be shown the barracks where tens of thousands of Jews lived in vile conditions. A prayer room, a tiny family accommodation for the Jews, a crematorium, a columbarium, and the Terezin concentration camp ramparts are all on this trip’s thought-provoking itinerary. You will learn how hunger, stress from slave labor, and epidemics riddled prisoners’ lives at the concentration camp.

The inside story

Terezín is a place filled with silence and reflection, forever marked with a dark history. Located 30 miles north of Prague , this former ghetto and Nazi concentration camp is a lasting reminder of the Jewish tragedy of World War II.

Construction of the Terezín military fortress began in 1780 and was originally built to secure the bridges across the Ohře and Elbe rivers against Prussian troops invading the Bohemian lands from neighboring Saxony. Yet, no battles took place at this time and the fortress is most infamous for serving as a walled ghetto, prison and concentration camp by Nazi Germany in World War II .

With the existing prisons filled up as a result of the Nazi terror, the Gestapo Prison was set up in Terezín in 1940. Primarily Czechs, most of the prisoners were arrested for acts of resistance to the Nazi regime. In 1941, Terezín, also known by the German name Theresienstadt , was adapted into a Jewish ghetto and concentration camp .

Although not primarily a death camp, around 150,000 Jewish men, women and children passed through Terezín on their way to Auschwitz and other concentration camps across Europe. Sadly, around 33,000 of them died in Terezín due to hunger, disease and poor living conditions.

Visit the Terezín Memorial dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust and pay tribute to the unwavering human courage and willingness to survive. Take a guided tour and learn about the history of the fort, its use under Nazi occupation and experience murky history by walking past former accommodation quarters, the crematorium and morgue.

Stop at the Ghetto Museum, which displays a permanent exhibition displaying the poor living conditions of Jews imprisoned in the Terezín camp. The Magdeburg Barracks are also worthy of a visit, here you can see original clothing, artifacts and living quarters of those striving to survive in the Jewish Ghetto.

Terezín is accessible by car, as part of an organized tour or via public transportation from Prague. Buses leave from central Prague several times a day and the journey time is around one hour. A guided tour with transport included is recommended for a full immersive experience. The Terezín fortress has many sections, with differing opening hours, most of the sections are open from 9am to 6pm during summer and 9am to 5pm during winter.

TEREZIN PRIVATE TOURS - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

All objects of the Terezín Memorial can be visited without a guide and prior reservation or as part of a guided tour of the Terezín Memorial. This is included in the entrance fee and we recommend booking it.

Booking of the tour is possible via our reservation system  here . Attending, this is not an automatic on-line reservation. By sendig an order, you are sending request, which will be answerd by guide manager.

A tour for the following day can only be booked from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

If visitors do not have a reservation, they can ask about the possibility of a guided tour on the spot at the box office of the Small Fortress, but in this case the tour cannot be guaranteed.

First route

tour of the Small Fortress with a guide (interpretation in Czech, English, German, Spanish or Italian) - duration 70 minutes together with an individual visit of the museum of the Small Fortress and the cinema - duration approx. 2 hours

Second route

tour of the former Terezín ghetto with a guide (interpretation in Czech, English, German, Spanish or Italian) - duration 120 minutes together with an individual visit of the Ghetto Museum and the Magdeburg Barracks and other exhibitons of the former ghetto - duration approx. 4 hours

Currently, the second route is only possible with printed or audio guide.

Visitors who plan to spend a shorter time in Terezín, e.g. morning or afternoon, we recommend a tour of the Small Fortress with a guide or, further, an individual visit to the museum objects of the former Terezín ghetto - time required: 2 - 4 hours.

In case of a full-day visit to the Terezín Memorial, we recommend that, in addition to the tour of the Small Fortress, you also take a guided tour of the former Terezín ghetto. With a subsequent visit to other museum objects, such a visit will last approximately 6-7 hours.

For security reasons, all objects managed by the Terezín Memorial are under the continuous surveillance of a camera system, from which a recording is usually made. The records are processed by the Terezín Memorial. Entity registration number: 00031296.

All premises of the Terezín Memorial are under 24 hour live/recorded video surveillance for your protection.
