When I first opened the box, I noticed that the pillow had one of the more flatter profiles of all the ones I’ve tested. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing—my head sinks right into a squishy comfort that immediately puts me to interrupted sleep , every time I use it. That’s likely thanks to the three layers of supportive foam.

Since this pillow sits lower than most competitor models, I almost feel like I miss some support by my shoulders and neck. However, it makes for a great everyday pillow that I’d reach for often. The flatter profile makes it comfortable to sleep in most positions.

I usually worry about contoured pillows like this one, but this Ecosa pillow gave me support in all the right places. It didn’t matter if I was sleeping on my side or my back, it felt luxurious in either position. Personally, out of all the pillows I tested, I gave this one the highest points for providing comfort and support.

The pillow comes with two inserts in case you want more elevation, but I had the best sleeping experience without them. I’m a hot sleeper, and while the pillow isn’t necessarily cooling, I didn’t notice any issues with overheating throughout the night.

I’ve used and enjoyed Purple in the past, but I specifically tested the Freeform pillow for this test since it has neck roll chambers and adjustable capabilities.

Right away, I noticed two things: the immediate cooling effect and high elevation . While I wasn’t a fan of the height at first, I took advantage of the adjustable features and removed some foam to bring it lower. I felt much more comfortable when I got the pillow one to two inches lower.

Unique features like their Honeycomb GelFlex Grid and foam material offer moisture-wicking properties and a bouncy yet relieving feel. Because of the steeper height, this pillow is most ideal for a side sleeper.

7) Original Foam Pillow

During testing, I liked that this pillow from Tuft and Needle would keep its shape throughout the night. Once you lay your head down, the foam pillow molds to your body and stays that way. Since it’s a flatter pillow, I personally felt most comfortable when laying and staying on my back.

The foam is infused with graphite and cooling gel, which helps the pillow from getting too warm at night. I missed a little bit of support by my neck and shoulders especially whenever I’d sleep on my side—but otherwise, my upper back felt naturally aligned and relieved as I laid down.

8) How to choose the best pillow for neck pain

Our experts agree that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to finding the best pillow for neck pain. Salcedo says that the main factor to consider if your sleeping posture. As he said earlier, preferred factors like material and density can all be influenced on your sleeping position.

According to Dr. Verma, it’s generally good to get a pillow that has enough support so that the neck can sit in a normal physiologic position. “You’ll want the pillow to have a supportive cushion just underneath the base of the neck so that the normal cervical lordosis is maintained,” he says. Additionally, the pillow should allow for those that are side sleepers to be comfortable.

It all comes down to preference, but through testing, I found that I (including my neck) mostly enjoyed pillows that were contoured, made of memory foam, and had cooling properties.

9) Is a soft or firm pillow better for neck pain?

While this can also depend on individual preference, our experts prefer a firm pillow for neck pain. “A balance between the two is good, with a slight bias towards firm,” Salcedo says. “That way, the pillow holds its form while letting you gradually sink into it throughout the night. Especially when lying on the pillow with the head and shoulders aligned, a slightly firmer pillow will allow the neck to be maintained in a neutral position.”

Dr. Verma agrees, saying that he prefers a firm pillow so that it supports the neck and normal anatomy.

10) How should you sleep to avoid neck pain?

Once again, there is no one-end, blanket solution that suits every individual as it usually depends on the root cause of the pain, Salcedo says. However, Salcedo and Dr. Verma say the most ideal positions are on the side or on your back.

“Depending on the type of neck pain, I usually advocate for my clients to sleep on their back as much as possible, with the pillow reaching low enough to sit behind their shoulders.” He explains that this is so that the head and shoulders stay in line and the pillow doesn’t push the head forward, potentially exacerbating the neck pain.

“And while most of us move in our sleep, I tell clients that if they’re able to tolerate this position for half of the night and it improves symptoms, that’s potentially half of the symptoms gone!” Salcedo adds.

Dr. Verma also says sleeping on your side is fine too, as long as you can maintain a neutral cervical spine alignment.

11) How we chose the best pillows for neck pain

To help us answer common questions about pillows for neck pain, we asked Kushagra Verma, M.D. , a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon at DISC Sports & Spine Center and Kyle Salcedo , doctor of physical therapy at Myodetox for their insights and recommendations.
