What are the best surfing destinations in Morocco?

If you’re wondering what are the best spots for surfing in Morocco, you’re not alone.

Morocco receives thousands of surfers every winter looking for the best surf resorts in Morocco.

The Atlantic coastline of Morocco is fantastic for surfing and most beaches are easily accessed either by public transport or with your own vehicle.

what's the best place to surf in Morocco

If you’re planning to be in Morocco for a couple of weeks, the following list of Morocco surf spots will help you plan your trip.

I’ve listed them from the southernmost destination, Agadir, to the surf spots located farther north along the coast. I’ve also included Dakhla on the list of best surfing spots in Morocco.

The 17 most beautiful places to visit in Morocco

1. Surfing in Agadir

Agadir may not be the best Moroccan surf destination on this list but it’s an easily accessible and affordable destination. The city has an airport connecting it with all the other major Moroccan cities.

Surfing in Morocco - A Guide to the 9 Best Surfing Spots in Morocco

If you’re short on time, this is the destination you should choose. There are plenty of beautiful beaches near the city that will appeal to beginner and experienced surfers.

What’s fantastic about Agadir is that after a day riding the waves, you can relax in a spa or enjoy the local nightlife.

2. Surfing in Tamraght and Aourir

10 minutes south of Taghazout is where you’ll find the small surfing towns of Tamraght and Aourir. These towns are perfect for new surfers that want to surf on smaller waves.

I would suggest that less experienced surfers try the waves in the area known as banana beach. It’s a long right hand point break that curves in the shape of the banana.

I’m not sure if the area was named because of the shape of the bay or because of the countless banana plantations that can be found nearby.

3. Surfing in and near Taghazout

Taghazout is one of the best surfing areas in Morocco if not in the whole world.

People come from all over to enjoy the near-perfect waves of this small Moroccan village.

Taghazout is super easy to reach from Agadir or Essaouira by public transport so it’s a destination you should absolutely include in your surfing trip. Taghazout is also considered one of the best destinations in the world to learn surfing.

where is Taghazout

A great thing about Taghazout is that the surf schools there are very affordable. Same goes for accommodation.

Cynthia and I stayed in Taghazout for almost a whole week and it barely cost anything.

Taghazout is a beautiful little hippie town with gorgeous cafes, stunning murals, and nice weather almost all year round.

Moroccan surf camp

There are so many beautiful surfing spots north and south of Taghazout that you could stay there for weeks and surf in a new area every day.

Taghazout is a great destination for surfers because it offers all kinds of surfing conditions, from soft beginner waves to heavy reef breaks for more advanced surfers.

Newbie surfers should check out spots called Banana point , Panoramas , Devil’s rock , and crocodile beach .

Most of these areas are closer to Tamraght. If you ask the locals or any surf instructor in Taghazout, they’ll point you in the right direction.

Intermediate surfers should head towards spots known as La source , Mysteries , Hash point , Douze k12 , k11 , and Anza Placa .

where should you kite surf in Morocco

And finally, the best spots for experienced surfers would be Anchor point , killer point , boilers , and slab .

The best time to surf in Taghazout is from late Fall to early Spring. Between the months of September and April, the swell of the waves is fantastic and the wind is ideal.

During the rest of the year the conditions are not as good anymore since a strong North-West wind blows most of the time.

what's the best time to surf in Taghazout

If you are looking for less crowded beaches and more affordable surf lessons it wouldn’t be a bad idea to come during the low season though.

If you’re willing to travel further North towards Essaouira , the two next Moroccan surfing hubs you should check out are Tamri and Imsouane.

4. Surfing in Tamri

Tamri is a very good location for intermediate surfers. It’s located between Taghazoute and Imsouane.

What’s so great about Tamri is the fact that it’s really not touristic. It’s probably the quietest of all the surfing spots on the Atlantic coast of Morocco.

It’s also an area that attracts a lot of local and exotic birds.

If you go there at the right time of the year you might see some flamingos and you’ll get the chance to do some excellent bird watching.

5. Surfing in Imsouane

Imsouane is a beautiful Moroccan town located right between Essaouira and Taghazout. Imsouane is the favorite destination in Morocco for many surfers.

They visit the town for its breathtaking scenes, for its calmness and tranquility and for its perfect surfing conditions.

Imsouane has one of the longest breaks in the world.

Imsouane is a relatively remote location and there aren’t many transport options available to reach it. You can rent a car and drive along the beautiful coastline to get there, catch a taxi (about 800-1200 MAD from Agadir or Essaouira), or ride the Souk to Surf shuttle bus .

The Souk to shuttle bus runs to Imsouane from Taghazout, Tamraght, Essaouira , and Agadir on a daily basis. It costs around 80 MAD per person.

how to surf in Morocco

The two main surfing spots in Imsouane are La Cathedrale , a beach break spot and La Bay , a point break spot.

Imsouane has smooth long waves that rarely get messy or big. The wave peels over soft sand for 300 meters making this an ideal surf spot for beginners and intermediate surfers.

6. Surfing in Sidi Kaouki

Sidi Kaouki is another coastal village where you can, not only surf but also observe stunning birds. The area surrounding the village and the small river that runs next to it are spots often visited by flocks of flamingos.

Sidi Kaouki is much less touristic than the city of Essaouira located 30 km north. Because of this, renting surfboards in Sidi Kaouki is much cheaper.

You can rent surfboards in Sidi Kaouki for 100 MAD per day which comes down to about 10 USD a day.

This small village is a good destination for horseback riding and camel riding as well.

This article breaks down the costs of getting from Essaouira to Sidi Kaouki by bus or taxi.

7. Surfing in Essaouira

Essaouira is our favorite city in Morocco and it’s superb surfing, windsurfing, and kite-surfing destination. It’s a windy coastal city and this makes it a top destination for surfers and kite surfers.

The swell of the waves is much stronger in winter so you’ll see more surfers there at that time of the year.

Essaouira is easily reached from Marrakech , Casablanca , and Rabat by public transport.

wave along the Moroccan coast

You’ll see plenty of surf shops and surfing schools, as well as windsurfing schools in Essaouira . If you always wanted to learn water sports, wait no longer and book your flight to this beautiful seaside city now!

The best spot for surfing in Essaouira is at the far end of the main beach where camels and horses are gathered.

Essouira itself is also a very lovely place to hang out and meet other travelers. The city has a very special charm.

8. Surfing in Safi

If you drive two hours north of Essaouira or two hours and a half south of Casablanca , you’ll arrive in the little town of Safi. Safi has amazing waves that can rise to 5 meters high and break for up to 500 meters.

Pros come from all over the world to ride the big hollow barrels these waves generate.

Safi has gained a very good reputation in the surfing community over the years and is now a world-famous surfing destination for expert wave riders.

Surfing in Morocco - A Guide to the 9 Best Surfing Spots in Morocco

I wouldn’t recommend beginner surfers to choose Safi for a Moroccan surfing holiday.

The current is very strong, the waves are tricky, and there are protruding rocks making this a destination much more suited for very experienced surfers.

9. Surfing in Dakhla

Dakhla is located south of Agadir in an area known as Western Sahara. This is an area where the legal status of the territory and the issue of its sovereignty remains unresolved even today.

Although Dakhla is located in Western Sahara, it’s totally possible to visit the town and even surf there. It’s very affordable to get a flight from Casablanca or Agadir to Dakhla.

Dakhla is also very popular among the kite-surfing community.

Dakhla is frequented by surfers for the quality of its waves and gorgeous landscapes. The peninsula of Dakhla is an exceptional surf destination with its long sandy desert beaches.

What is the best season to surf in Morocco?

The very best time to surf in Morocco is between December and March. That’s when the waves are at their highest and the wind is perfect.

This is the season that attracts more experienced surfers, especially Europeans.

But surfing season in Morocco already starts in September and continues until April.

September and October are two great months to surf along the whole Moroccan coast since the first winter swells arrive, there is usually no wind and a lot fewer tourists.

How high are the waves on the Moroccan coast in winter?

Morocco is probably not as popular as Australia’s Gold Coast, or Hawaii’s Waimea Bay when it comes to surfing but the waves in this North-African country can get pretty high in winter.

When the wind is good in Taghazout during winter, the waves can swell to 4 or 5 meters (13 to 16 feet) and are usually at least 300 meters long.

Is surfing in Morocco safe?

Morocco as a whole is a very safe country. After traveling in this country for more than a year I can guarantee that Morocco is very safe to travel to!

Last year alone more than 10 million people visited Morocco, making it one of the most visited countries in Africa. With such a high amount of visits, the amount of crime in Morocco is still extremely low.

Surfing in Morocco is not more dangerous than surfing anywhere else in the world but there are general safety rules you’ll have to follow.

You should always surf with a partner that is more experienced than you and that can help you out if you get in trouble.

It’s also better to surf in areas that correspond to your skill level. Always ask the locals about the wind, tides and swell conditions before going out with your surfboard at sea.

Do you need a wet suit to surf in Morocco?

The water temperature on the Atlantic coast of Morocco stays chilly throughout the year so you’ll definitely need a wet suit to surf there.

On the southern coast of the country, between Essaouira and Agadir, the temperature drops between 16 and 18 °C (61-64°F) in winter. Although the water is colder during that period, the surf season is at its best.

You can bring your own wet suit from home but it’s also possible to rent wet suits in any surf school or surf shop in the different coastal towns.

I would suggest grabbing a 4/3mm wet suit if you go there in winter.

In summer, you won’t need to wear a wet suit that is as thick. A 2 mm shorty should do the trick. If the wind is up or you go surfing early in the morning, you might need a 3/2mm wet suit.

What should you bring on a surf trip to Morocco?

There are a few essentials you shouldn’t forget on your next surfing adventure in Morocco. Here are the things we recommend bringing along:

Although the weather and the water can be chilly during winter, you shouldn’t let that deceive you. The sun can be absolutely vicious and you could end up with a bad sunburn.

The best sunscreen you can bring to surf in Morocco is a sunscreen with Zinc Oxide . It’s a powdered solution that is insoluble in water. It doesn’t come off in the ocean and will stay on your skin until you wash it off it the sower.

  • Headlamp or torchlight

The sun sets very early in Morocco during winter. In Taghazout, you’re likely to meet fellow surfers and spend the evening with them.

Bring a headlamp so you can find your way back to your accommodation after dinner or partying.

In Morocco, you’ll be exposed to completely new food, water, and bacteria. If you want to fully enjoy your surfing holiday and not have to run to the bathroom, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to bring some probiotics in tablets or powder.

  • Water Filter Bottle

Another recommendation I would have would be to avoid drinking tap water on the coast of Morocco without filtering it. While tap water in Morocco is generally considered safe, exposure to completely new bacteria could make you sick.

To avoid buying plastic water bottles, I would recommend bringing a LifeStraw Water Filter Bottle .

This is a bottle that filters water using a filtration device. If you drink water using this bottle , any dirt, bacteria or parasites get trapped in the filter, while the clean water passes through.

  • First Aid kit

I sincerely hope you don’t have to use a first aid kit but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Surfing in Morocco like anywhere else in the world comes with certain dangers.

If you are an experienced surfer always going after the biggest waves, it’s not a bad idea to have at least a small First Aid kit with you.

It should include antiseptic liquid, cotton, bandages, heat and cold spray, and a small pair of scissors. Emergency Services can sometimes be hard to locate in remote surfing areas. This is the emergency kit we recommend .

  • Warm clothes

You’re probably wondering why you would need warm clothes in Morocco. The sea breeze that hits the coast in the evening can cool down the temperature very quickly.

Even if the day is warm and sunny, the evening could always be much colder than expected. We recommend bringing a warm sweater and some track pants to stay warm. It’s also helpful to have a beanie hat .

After a whole day of surfing, it’s also easy to catch a little cold. So make sure to stay warm.

It may sound crazy but it will be way cheaper to bring your own surf wax from home or buy it online before your trip.

Where can you learn how to surf in Morocco?

Morocco is gaining international fame as a world-renowned surfing destination. Because of this, many young Moroccans are opening surf schools in the different surfing towns along the coast.

There are so many different surf schools and surf camps in Morocco that it can sometimes be hard to know which one to choose.

Here are the different surfing schools we recommend in a few of the towns along the Moroccan coast:

Surf schools in Agadir

Whether you are looking for a surf adventure, a yoga retreat, trekking in the mountains or just pure relaxation, you will find it all at Crocro Surf Maroc camp , your personal surf, trekking and yoga instructor in Morocco.

The Camp is located just 16 km from the city of Agadir and 45 minutes from the international airport of Agadir Al Massira.

This area not only has a perfect climate (more than 300 sunny days a year) but also amazing spots for surfers of all levels. Their friendly and qualified surf instructors will teach you to surf on your own not just follow commands like paddle and stand up.

You will know when to do everything by yourself, you will feel the wave and make it the ocean your ally.

Surf schools in Taghazout

Taghazout is a village where the waves are perfect for surfers of all levels. There are many surf schools based directly in town.

SurfCamp Taghazout

This surf school has been been in Taghazout for well over a decade now. Most of the surf instructors at the camp are ISA (International Surfing Association) certified, can speak many languages and are from all over the world!

They offer surfing classes as well as yoga retreats in beautiful surroundings.

SurfCamp Taghazout also provides accommodation as part of their surfing packages. The school owners also have a lovely hostel that offers a 180-degree panoramic view from its rooftop terrace of Taghazout Bay.

They offer surf packages that will be ideal for most people, but also accommodation-only options for others. You can contact them here and create your own personalized surf trip.

surf school in Tachazout

Hash Point surf camp

Hash Point surf camp is another great surfing school I highly recommend in Taghazout.

With this school you’ll learn how to surf in Morocco’s safe beach breaks or improve your surf level on one of the many right-handers of Taghazout. Their qualified teachers will guide and teach you every step of the way. They offer surf school packages for all levels.

The lessons include 2,5 hours of lessons in the morning and 2 hours of practice time in the afternoon, under the supervision of great teachers. Each surf instructor teaches a group of max 8 students.

Once a week, they organize a surf talk on the terrace of their hostel where they catch up with you on your progress and your surf knowledge.

Surf Berber

This awesome school commits to providing you with three things: surf, yoga and having a great time! The school was launched by two friends who visited Taghazout and fell in love with the small town.

Their surf camp caters for up to twenty-five people (although they can stretch for larger groups).

What differentiates them from other surf schools in Taghazout is the fact that they don’t just use one beach. They drive to the beach that is going to be perfect for you on that day (unlike most other surf schools that will just use the same stretch of beach day in, day out).

This means that you get to catch as many green waves as you can!

Surf schools in Essaouira

Loving surf

This school based in Essaouira offers surfing as well as kite-surfing lessons. They have a great crew of super experienced instructors who speak almost all the languages you could imagine.

The school offers many different packages for a fully customized trip.

This is probably the surfing school in Morocco that left the biggest impression on us and we highly recommend it! It’s owned and operated by Moroccan twins Mouhssin and Yassin Kharbouch.

They bring passion and love for the sport to their school . They have both been surfing since they were kids. Born and raised in Essaouira , they know all the surf spots and have been working as surf coaches for several years.

The twins offer surf lessons and trips in Essaouira to suit your needs. Whether you’re a beginner or looking for some extra tips, you can join their surf lifestyle and feel at home with them. They also offer surf trips to other local surf spots around Essaouira.

The waves here in summer are smaller than in winter but are still good for learning. For beginners, the surf is good all year round.

I would like to do a surf trip at the end of August / September.

Do you think it’s possible even thought is not the Surfing season there ?

Let me know your thoughts please 😊

Hi Marta, I honestly can’t tell. A lot will depend on the waves because no waves = no surf 🙁

Surf Morocco Guide

When it’s getting colder in Europe, think of surfing in Morocco for your surf escape.

coastine morocco

Morocco, with its sun-kissed coastline and diverse landscapes, is a dream come true for surfers. Although it’s a part of Africa, its surfing scenes have created a significant mark on the European surf trail. Thousands of Europeans flock to Morocco, seeking sun, surf, and the refreshing chill of Atlantic waters.

Morocco is the land of the right-hand point breaks. They seem to be everywhere, almost as common a beach breaks in southwest France .

Before we dive into de details of surfing in Morocco watch this video about surfing in Morocco.

Morocco’s Surfing Dynamics

As you saw in the video, Morocco’s coastline is aligned beautifully to catch the long-range, North Atlantic swells, which roll in on a NW trajectory. With moderate NW to NE winds blowing, surfers often find solace in spots that offer protection against these winds. The seasonal changes between the strong swells and winds of winter, and the slightly calmer summer, make it essential to understand the surfing rhythm of Morocco.

The mornings in Morocco’s beaches are marked by summer’s N or NW winds. These winds keep the exposed beaches light from onshore conditions. But the desert’s influence is strong. Early morning land breezes heat up quickly, and by afternoon, sea breezes take over. In summer, the land temperatures can go up to an average of 26°C in the north and can hit a scorching 39°C in Dakhla.

Surfers, especially those traveling, need to ensure they download tidal information before their trip, as getting reliable data can be tricky on the move. We’ll provide with some data later on.

Morocco delivers her most tasty waves during fall, winter and spring.

And forget your thick wetsuits. Morocco’s pleasant climate and exposure to the North Atlantic’s swells make it an attractive surfing destination, especially given it’s close proximity to Europe. A wetsuit is still needed when surfing. But outside the water you can just wear your boardshorts or bikini and your flipflops. Even in winter.

Northern Morocco: A Cold Surf Haven

For those venturing into Morocco during the winter surfing season, Northern Morocco is your go-to place. The cold weather, combined with 1000kms of NW-facing beach breaks, is a mesmerizing sight. Although the cross-shore and closed-out waves can be a tad intimidating, spots like Medhiya offer wind and swell protection, thanks to its long rivermouth jetties. Rabat’s Doura is another hidden gem, with multiple slabby reef breaks waiting to be explored.

Central Morocco: A Blend of Adventure and Relaxation

As you journey south from El Jadida, Central Morocco unveils a mix of rugged coastlines and enticing beaches. The surfing scene here is lively, with places like Safi’s ‘Garden’ becoming a surfer’s playground. For those in search of a unique surfing experience, “Surfing Park Sidi Bouzide” should be on the list.

The highway inland from Safi leads you to Essaouira, a former hippie town that has maintained its old-world charm. Here, you’ll find surfers battling strong cross-shore winds. But the reward? Gorgeous reef breaks, points, and beach breaks with more swell. Not to forget, the tiny fishing villages, which add to the rustic charm of this region.

Taghazout: The Surfing Epicenter

Taghazout has long been a surfer’s mecca. Its legendary waves like the ‘Ikhf’nout’ and the mesmerizing ‘Anchor Point’ beckon surfers from all around. Offering waves that are perfect for both beginners and intermediates, this region provides a safe environment to hone your surfing skills.

Discovering the Waves: Surfing in Southern Morocco

Morocco’s southern coastline stretches across a vast expanse, offering surf enthusiasts a dreamlike combination of the Sahara desert meeting the Atlantic’s crisp waves. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a curious newbie, the unique geography and climate of this region promise an unparalleled experience.

The southern belt of Morocco reaches out from the bustling city of Agadir, navigating its way along a disputed border with Western Sahara, and further extending 800kms down towards Mauritania. It’s not just any stretch; it’s an untouched wilderness – vast, empty, and ready for exploration. In between the enormous dunes and wild beaches are towns like Sidi Ifni, Tan Tan, Tarfaya, and Dakhla, which have become surf hotspots over the years.

Surf Morocco; when to go?

October to April is the best period to surf in Morocco. With December, January and February being the pick of the months. So, winter stands out as an ideal time for surfing here. Although Dakhla is far removed from the Atlantic storms, the season promises the most consistent swells. Moreover, the lighter winds of winter allow surfers to make the most of the waves. While the desert can get quite chilly, Dakhla offers a milder climate, with temperatures averaging around 29°C.

Openly exposed to the Atlantic Ocean, Morocco’s coast receives an abundance of northwest-to-north swell up to 5 meters during these wintermonths. The Northwest-facing coast around Casablanca and Rabat receives more swell than the southwest-facing points as Anchor Point near Taghazout.

Surfing in Essaouira

Travel guides always recommend Essaouira. It’s a beautiful place for tourists and surfers in Morocco. It has an authentic Medina, harbour and a fort build in the 18th century. And Essaouira is on the  UNESCO World Heritage list .

The waves are often at best in the mornings. The mornings are often quiet. In the afternoon the kite- and windsurfers will take over because of the stronger winds.

Best surf spots Essaouira

  • Safi .    Safi is just north of Essaouira. It’s a big and sensitive beach break with rocky slabs offering powerful and curly waves. To be checked with a little swell. With big swells it’s al speed and power. With tubing waves rival those of Jeffrey Bay in South Africa. It can be populated by a Quiksilver training camp.
  • Essaouira bay. An ideal surf spot for beginners and relaxed surfers, on condition that the swell is big enough.
  • Sidi Kaouki .  This beach break is located at 25 km south from Essaouira, on the road to Agadir and Taghazout.
  • Imessouane . Perfectly located between Essaouira and Taghazout. This is a smooth longboard wave that rarely gets messy, or big, and peels over soft sand for 300 meters. And an easy paddle out. Making this a beginner and intermediate haven.

Surfing in Taghazout

Deep in the heart of North Africa there is a fishinh vilage called Taghazout. Just north of Agadir. Which comes alive each winter with the sound of punding pointbreaks and surf banter. It’s a beautiful place with a rich Arabic culture to add  to the magic.

Taghazout is surf, surf and surf.  Taghazout is the premium surfing destination of Morocco with some vicious surfspots, like Anchor Point.

Anchor Point is delicious right point break that looks easier than you think. Around Taghazout there are many other spots where you can surf. For each level. These breaks are in the immediate area (= walking distance) from Taghazout:

Best surf spots Taghazout

  • Killer Point. A powerful wave. Which is higher than you think.
  • La Source. A performance wave. Just a little less than tall and powerful Killer Point.
  • Mysteries. Located directly next to La Source. The waves break partly on sand. What makes things more relaxed.
  • Anchor Point. A steep take off. Powerful point break, which remains on a good day walk.
  • Hash Point. One of the most relaxed waves.
  • Panoramas. Could reasonably have some flow. But also runs a nice long right.
  • Devil’s Rock. A tough name for a break each day can be different. Right and left waves. But, in particular, a right hand.
  • Banana Beach. Here you will often find the beginners because it is a relatively easy golf.

I recognize Imsouane for housing one of the world’s longest waves, a gentle and remarkably long right-hander that’s perfect for longboarders and those looking to improve their stamina on the wave.

Killer Point: For the Brave

I recommend Killer Point for seasoned surfers seeking adrenaline. Its powerful waves and rocky bottom can give even the most courageous surfers a heart-pounding challenge.

La Source: Perfect for All Levels

La Source, with its forgiving waves, is ideal for surfers of all levels. I’ve always found it a great spot for beginners to dip their toes into the surf or for intermediates to hone their skills.

Mysteries: The Hidden Gem

Named Mysteries for its seclusion, I’ve often viewed this spot as one of the best-kept secrets in Morocco, delivering uncrowded waves and an intimate surfing experience.

Banana Point offers long, mellow waves that I think are perfect for longboarders and those looking to cruise on open faces. Its consistency is something I praise.

Tamri: Swell Magnet

I’ve observed Tamri to be the go-to spot when other places are flat. Its position makes it a swell magnet, ensuring there are often waves to be caught.

Safi: The Pottery City’s Secret

Safi might be known for pottery, but I’ve uncovered that it also harbors an excellent surf spot, with powerful waves that barrel—a real gem for the experienced surfer.

Essaouira: Windy City’s Surf

Essaouira is more famous for windsurfing, but I’ve enjoyed its surf scene as well; the powerful winds can create some impressive wave conditions.

Sidi Ifni: The Southern Surprise

Sidi Ifni is a southern surprise I’ve been drawn to for its less crowded waves and picturesque setting. It’s a peaceful alternative to more popular spots.

Sidi Kaouki: Long Beach Breaks

The long beach breaks at Sidi Kaouki are what I find appealing, offering consistent conditions suitable for all surfing levels with plenty of room to maneuver.

Mirleft: The Quiet Escape

Mirleft is a quiet escape, I’ve appraised, with a diverse range of waves that cater to different surfing styles and levels, set against a backdrop of stunning cliffs.

Tifnit: Traditional Fishing Village

Tifnit is not only a traditional fishing village, but I’ve discovered that its beaches offer spirited surf that sees far fewer crowds than other spots along the coast.

Agadir: Urban Surfing

Agadir’s urban landscape belies its beach’s potential for surf. I’ve taken advantage of this spot for a quick session or to teach new surfers in its mild waves.

Rabat: The Capital’s Coastline

Rabat, the capital, surprises with its coastline that I’ve found to offer consistent surf and a variety of spots that can result in a surprisingly good day in the water.

Dakhla: Kitesurfing Heaven

Lastly, I’d be remiss not to mention Dakhla—a kitesurfing heaven, but also a place where surfers can enjoy the Atlantic swells in a unique desert environment.

Surfing Culture and Community in Morocco

In Morocco, the ocean’s rhythmic waves have given rise to a vibrant and evolving surfing culture, shaped by both local and global influences.

The Evolution of Moroccan Surf Scene

The surf scene in Morocco has seen significant growth over recent years, blossoming from a niche interest into a prominent feature of coastal life. The country’s extensive coastline opens up to the Atlantic, offering a diverse range of surf spots that have attracted attention worldwide. Moroccan surfers have carved out a space for themselves in this international arena, embracing surfing as a way of life and a catalyst for social interactions. An example of the integration of surfing into the cultural fabric is the presence of  women who surf in Morocco , which showcases the dynamic nature of the sport and its capacity to redefine social boundaries.

Local Surfing Communities and Lifestyle

Surfing in Morocco isn’t just a sport; it’s a lifestyle deeply engrained in the coastal communities. These communities consist of both local surf enthusiasts and international visitors drawn by the promise of year-round waves. Moroccan towns such as Taghazout and Dakhla are particularly known for their surfing lifestyle, offering a sense of camaraderie and relaxed living that revolves around the sea. Life here moves to the tides’ tempo, with daily routines often planned around the best surf conditions. This communal appreciation for the sport fosters tight-knit local surfing communities where shared experiences and storytelling are common pastimes, strengthening bonds and expressing a collective identity tied to the surf.

Best Times to Surf in Morocco

As a seasoned surfer, I’ve found that timing your visit to Morocco can make all the difference in the quality of your surfing experience. The country offers diverse coastal conditions favorable for surfers at different times of the year.

Surfing Seasons and Conditions

Morocco’s surfing season predominantly spans from  October to April , where the Atlantic swells are most consistent. During this period, you can expect larger waves suitable for experienced surfers. However, if you’re a beginner or prefer gentler waves, the summer months from May to September provide smaller, more manageable conditions. Notably,  Taghazout  and the surrounding areas are renowned for their excellent winter waves.

  • High swells
  • For intermediate and advanced surfers
  • Smaller, softer waves
  • Ideal for beginners

Planning Your Surf Trip

To get the most out of your Morocco surf adventure, it’s crucial to plan according to the season and your skill level. If you’re in pursuit of the legendary point breaks like those at  Anchor Point , scheduling your visit during winter will likely yield the best conditions. Always check the local surf forecast before heading out. For accommodations and lessons, the coastal towns of  Taghazout  and  Agadir  offer several surf camps and schools to cater to your needs.

  • Accommodation : Surf camps in  Taghazout  and  Agadir
  • Gear : Rental options available, including wetsuits and boards
  • Lessons : Schools for all levels, especially in summer

By understanding the surfing seasons and effectively planning your trip, you’ll be poised to catch some of the best waves Morocco has to offer.

Surfing Lessons and Schools

In my experience, Morocco has become a premier destination for surf enthusiasts. With its extensive coastline and consistent waves, you’ll find ample opportunities for both lessons and equipment rentals.

Where to Learn Surfing in Morocco

Morocco boasts numerous surf spots along its coastline, especially around the village of Taghazout which is renowned for its surfing culture. You’ll find a variety of  surf schools  in Taghazout, as well as in the nearby towns of Agadir and Essaouira. These schools typically provide a range of services, from beginner courses to advanced coaching. Many schools offer package deals that include surfing lessons as well as accommodation.

  • Surf Berbere
  • Taghazout Surf Wave
  • Agadir Surfing School
  • Devil’s Rock Surf Camp
  • Explora Watersports
  • Bleukite Essaouira

Choosing the Right Surf School

When deciding on a surf school, I pay attention to the school’s reputation, the experience of the instructors, and the quality of their equipment. It is essential to choose a school that prioritizes safety and offers  surfboard rentals  as part of their packages. I prefer schools that maintain a low student-to-instructor ratio, ensuring personalized attention. Reviews from past students can be very telling, hence making platforms like TripAdvisor a valuable resource when making my decision. Furthermore, schools accredited by the Moroccan Surfing Federation are often a guarantee of quality and reliability.

beaches in morocco

In my exploration of Morocco’s surfing culture, I’ve observed a significant shift towards eco-friendly practices. These practices are not just beneficial for the environment but also enhance the surfing experience, ensuring that the stunning Moroccan coastlines are preserved for future generations.

Eco-friendly surfing  is gaining traction here. This sustainable approach is evident in initiatives such as beach cleanups and the use of eco-friendly surf wax and materials. It is inspiring to see local communities and businesses support these practices.

As for  surfing retreats in Morocco , I’ve noticed that they offer more than just wave riding. These retreats invest in the local economy and often incorporate traditional Moroccan culture and hospitality, making them a favorite among surfers looking for a unique experience.

Another exciting aspect is the  surfing competitions . Such events draw international attention to Morocco’s coastal towns, showcasing the country’s commitment to high-quality surfing events and providing a competitive platform for local talent.

When it comes to  coastal towns , I can confidently say they are the jewels of Morocco’s surfing scene. Towns like Taghazout and Essaouira not only offer excellent waves but also a glimpse into the vibrant culture that infuses life into the local surfing.

In my time here, I’ve come to appreciate the blend of culture and sport that makes Moroccan surfing distinctive. The passionate embrace of surfing in this country paves the way for a sustainable and exciting surfing future.

Frequently Asked Questions

In this section, I’ll address some of the most common queries regarding surfing in Morocco, specifically tailored for both beginners and experienced surfers wondering about the best times and places to catch waves.

What is the best time of year for beginners to go surfing in Morocco?

For beginners, the ideal time to surf in Morocco is from April to June or from September to October. During these months, the waves are smaller and more manageable, making them perfect for those just starting out.

Which surf spots in Morocco are recommended for beginners?

Taghazout and Tamraght are excellent spots for beginner surfers. They offer a variety of breaks that are forgiving and allow new surfers to practice without the intimidation of larger waves.

What are the prime surfing locations in Morocco for experienced surfers?

Experienced surfers should head to spots like Anchor Point and Killers Point where the waves are larger and more challenging. These spots are known for their consistent swell and provide the thrilling experience sought after by seasoned surfers.

How do surf conditions in Morocco vary between August and November?

Between August and November, surf conditions in Morocco see a transition from small, gentle summer waves to the larger, more powerful swells of the approaching winter season. This period caters to a broader skill range, from intermediates easing into larger waves to experts looking for more challenging conditions.

Where is the most convenient airport to fly into for surfing trips in Morocco?

The most convenient airport for surfing trips in Morocco is Agadir Al Massira Airport. It is the closest airport to the major surf spots such as Taghazout and Tamraght and just a short drive away from the waves.

Can you find surf opportunities in Casablanca or should you target other regions in Morocco?

Surfing in Casablanca is possible but not ideal due to inconsistent wave conditions and urban crowding. I recommend targeting regions like Taghazout Bay for a robust surfing experience. Casablanca is better suited as a cultural visit than a surf destination.

surf trip to morocco

The North African country of Morocco lies directly in the path of all major North Atlantic swell activity, yet is far enough south (between 20N and 35N) to avoid the same storms and weather fronts that pound Europe. On the edge of the Sahara, Morocco enjoys desert sun and seasonal water temperatures in the low 70s in early fall dropping to high 50s in the dead of winter. Morocco is best known for its right pointbreaks, but also has many reefbreaks and beachbreaks of high caliber as well.

While Morocco is a massive county with over 2000km of coastline, Wavehunters and our partner Surf Maroc focus on the region north of Agadir also known as Taghazout. This is Morocco's best known surfing zone and contains over 2 dozen documented breaks. What makes it special is the presence of a massive headland along this part of the coast that bends the winds into an offshore direction, cleaning up swells that are often overpowering and crossed up elsewhere, as well as a very indented rocky coastline with many rock and sand points, reefs and quality beachbreaks tucked in. In short, it is a dense wave zone with all the waves you need within an hour drive of Taghazout. For the surfer on 1 or 2 week holiday who doesn't have time or resources to explore the whole country, this zone is perfect. Add to the mix Surf Maroc's full range of accommodations, surfside restaurant and lounge in town, expert surf guiding and trip hosting, and Morocco's mind-blowing cultural diversity and you have a truly exotic surf trip.

There are some things you must know about traveling in Morocco in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises. The languages are Arabic, Berber, and French. English is not really spoken except by tourists. Surf Maroc's multi-lingual staff is just so key because of the language barrier you will encounter everywhere. The currency in use is Moroccan Dirham, which you must exchange in the airport. There is not an ATM in Taghazout it is about a 15min drive. Credit cards are not accepted in most places, so you really will need Moroccan Dirham to play. A 30 day tourist visa is issued upon entry for Americans and Europeans (other nationalities please inquire). Your passport must be valid a full 6 months beyond entry. The electricity is 220V with two-pin round plugs.

Getting to Morocco:

Wavehunters normally books flights for Americans from New York with Royal Air Maroc directly into Casablanca with connecting service to Agadir. Other major gateways to Morocco including London, Paris and Madrid. Contact us for itineraries and pricing.

Wavehunters Morocco Tour Packages include:

  • Airport transfers
  • Accommodation in a Private Apartment (Option of Killers Bay, Taghazout or Tiggers Bay) or Surf Villa/Camp.
  • Breakfast and dinner at Surf Maroc's L'Auberge Restaurant in Taghazout. Packed lunch with sandwiches, snacks and drinks provided on surfing tours. (Breakfast and dinner may be delivered to apartment if preferred).
  • Surf guide and transport all day, every day. (Option of Private or Shared Surf Tours)

morocco-surf-1.jpg

Morocco's coast has the most direct swell exposure to NW swells in the North Atlantic. Surf season is late September to early April (peak Dec-Feb). This can make for an overabundance of swell at any other region but with the lined up points and sheltered spots, even the largest swells of winter can be well groomed in the area. As far as wind and tide go, the normal winter-wind is North-east, blowing offshore to moderately cross-shore. In mid to late April, the NW "Chergui" winds blowout most spots until September. Tides can be an issue at the points with low to medium being the preferred tides for the area. But when there is swell running, you can still get really fun smooth walls for big turns, not to mention the beachbreaks in the area. The tides vary from 2-6 feet making them not extreme, but definitely mushing out the waves when the dead of high tides come.

The region has something for everyone, from ideal beginner to intermediate level sand and rock points and beachbreaks to challenging hollow points and reef ledges for more advanced surfers. Deep water swell heights in this part of the Atlantic can reach 15ft but the refraction of the swell around the numerous points and bays of this area will cut the swell size down by as much as 30-70% depending on how sheltered the particular spot is. Because of the sheer # of spots in this area, and other variables such as swell direction and size, tide (big tides here) and wind, a surf guide is invaluable to ensure you don't spend your entire day driving around on a fruitless search.

About Surfing in Morocco

Most surfers who surf in Morocco for the first time fall in love with it immediately. This country, the “land of right-hand point breaks”, is definitely one of the best surf destinations in the world. In fact, with only a short flight from most European countries, surfers from all over the world discovered the magic of Morocco, and keep coming here regularly to surf its epic waves.

Morocco, a Muslim country in West Africa, faces the Sahara desert from the East and the Atlantic Ocean from the West. Due to its geographical location, there are almost 365 sunny days a year. With about 1,800 KM of coastline, Morocco gets tons of swell and offers several world-class surf breaks. While perfect waves hit the whole Moroccan coastline, most surfers hang out in the country’s major surf capital, Taghazout .

Located less than half an hour from the International Airport of Agadir, the area of Taghazout is home to a wide variety of surf spots. From soft pilling and beginner waves to massive barrels, the waves here can suit all skill levels. For that reason, surfing in Morocco has become so popular in the past decade and established the country as a perfect destination for a surf trip.

Surfing in Morocco

The Best Surf Spots in Morocco

When surfing in Morocco, you have a huge selection of breaks to choose from. In fact, Morocco offers all types of waves for all skill levels. Therefore, any surfer can find the right waves for himself, depending on his skill level. So, in detail, these are the best surf spots in Morocco:

Surf Spots in Morocco for Beginners:

Banana point:.

You will find this spot in front of the many banana plantation fields in the area. It is a tremendous right-hand point break with a soft, sandy bottom. The waves in this spot are long and mellow and, therefore, great for beginners and for longboards.

Devil’s Rock:

Devil’s Rock is not as scary as it may sound. Actually, it is a pretty soft beach break that opens up to both the right and left sides. Due to its proximity to the nearby village, it can get crowded. However, this beach has several different peaks, so you can always find a spot for yourself.

Another right-hander breaking over a sandy bottom. During high tide, this wave is gentle and beginner-friendly. However, when the tide is low or when the swell is big, this beach turns into a fast barrel machine.

Crocodile’s / Crocs:

This is a typical beach break. It has multiple peaks breaking over the sand and open to both sides. It is a perfect beach to practice your skills without danger.

Located further north, this is a very long right-hand point break. It opens up softly and slowly along a beautiful bay. This is the favorite surf spot in Morocco for beginners and longboarders.

Morocco Surf Spots Map

Surf Spots in Morocco for Intermediates:

La Source is a wonderful reef break. Actually, it is an A-frame wave breaking over a rocky bottom, but it also has some sandy sections. On a good day, you can ride it for about 100-150 meters, and it is suitable for all skill levels.

This one is definitely a world-class surf spot in Morocco. It breaks over a reef and can run up to 250 meters with some barreling sections and a fun wall. Up to 5 feet, it is a fantastic wave to ride, but above that, it starts to close out.

Hash Point:

This right-hand point break is located right in front of Taghazout. Due to its location, it is always crowded with both locals and foreigners who come to explore the surf beaches of Morocco. The waves here are fast, long, and suitable to all levels.

K-11 and K-12:

These spots got their name for their distance from Agadir. While K-11 is one of the only left breaks in the area, K-12 is an A-frame that opens up to both sides. Both spots offer a pretty easy ride and are perfect for goofy footers.

Desert Point:

This point break produces amazingly long right-hand waves. However, it requires a big swell to perform well. Therefore, wait for the right day to score it, and you will not regret coming here.

You will need to head further north to reach this spot. However, on the flat days, when no other spot is working, Tamri always produces some surfable waves. This beach break works on any day, any tide, and any swell direction.

Surf Spots in Morocco for Advanced Surfers:

Anchor point:.

This is the most famous surf spot in Morocco and the main reason why people come from all over the world to surf in Morocco. This right-hand point break in Taghazout is a world-class wave. In fact, it has 3 different sections with a fast wall and massive barrels. This spot is definitely a place you must visit during your surf trip to Morocco.

Killer Point:

This one is probably the most consistent spot in the area. Therefore, you can count on it on the days when the swell is small. Even though it requires a long paddle to get to the lineup, it also produces incredibly long rides to the right and good barrels.

This break is always bigger than the other spots and requires high skills to surf. It is long and powerful, but only a fast surfer can make all the sections. If you know what you are doing, don’t miss out on this spot, but if you are a beginner, this one is not for you.

Similarly to Boilers, this is also a spot for advanced surfers only. With big sharp rocks, strong currents, and long massive barrels, this is a perfect wave for those who can handle it.

If you are new to surfing and looking for beginner waves, check out our post about beginner surf beaches in Morocco .

Surf Seasons in Morocco

In general, you can surf in Morocco 365 days a year. Since this coastline picks up both NW and SW swells, you can always find something to ride on somewhere along the coast. However, the best surf season in Morocco is the winter, between October and March. During these months, the swell is big and highly consistent. Moreover, the offshore winds blow from the desert and contribute to the perfect surf conditions.

The air temperaure during the season typically averages 22°C. The days are always sunny, but the nights can get pretty cold, so bring some long sleeves for the evenings. Accordingly, the water temperature is usually around 18°C. Therefore, when surfing in Morocco, you must bring your full wet suit. A 3/2 one will usually be enough, but for the sensitive ones, better bring a 4/3.

Keep in mind that during the peak of the season (December and January), the swell can be huge, sometimes even 10-15 feet. If you are an advanced surfer, these months will be perfect for you. However, if you are still not at this level, you better come to explore the surf beaches of Morocco at the beginning or end of the season, when the waves are around 4-7 feet and a bit more forgiving.

Taghazout Beach

There is an incredible selection of surf spots in Morocco, so surfers of all levels can find breaks that suit their skills. For instance, beginners can surf mellow waves in spots like Banana Point and Imsouane. Intermediate surfers, though, will find more challenging waves in La Source and Hash Point. And finally, if you are an advanced surfer, you can ride fantastic barrels in Anchor Point and Boilers.

Which Town in Morocco is Best to Stay At on a Surf Trip

On a surf trip, it is best to focus on one area to spend more time surfing and less traveling. However, there are many great surf beaches in Morocco, and sometimes, it can be hard to choose where to stay. So, considering the waves and the general atmosphere of the place, these 2 towns are the most recommended locations to stay:

1. Taghazout – This is, without a doubt, the Moroccan surf capital. The town is surf-oriented and offers a variety of hotels, shops, restaurants, and surf camps. Moreover, some of the best surf spots in Morocco are found here.

2. Imsouane – In this town, you will find one of the longest waves in the country. It is considered an easy wave to ride and suitable for beginners and intermediates. Therefore, it is a perfect spot to spend a week or two.

The 8 Best Surf Camps in Morocco [Updated 2024]

There are countless surf camps in Morocco to pick from, with more on offer in 2024 than there have ever been. Our team is down in the land of tagines and towering Atlas Mountains basically every winter season, so keeps tabs on where’s hot and where’s not…

Surf camps in Morocco

Morocco is probably the best place to do a surf camp in Africa. They’re some big words, we know, especially with upcoming destinations and empty waves all along West Africa in particular, plus the Rainbow Nation in the mix.

But there are some unqiue things that the home of spice-scented tagines has going for it…

You’ve also got the multi-level array of breaks that strings the Atlantic coast north of Agadir. There’s enough there to cater to a kaleidoscope of levels, from the frothing right shoulders of Anchor Point to the lazy cruisers that curl into the sands of Tamraght.

Then there’s the accessibility – Morocco, unlike much of Africa, can be reached on short-haul budget flights from Europe. Plus, the surf season here coincides nicely for the Northern Hemisphere winter, meaning there’s warm-water and sunshine to be had while your mates at home are shivering and pulling on 5-mil rubber plus gloves. It’s hard to resist, eh?

Of course, not all surf camps in Morocco are made equal. The last 10 years have seen a major explosion in the number of options, espeically in the main surf hub of Taghazout . That means there’s chaff and there’s grain; good and bad. We focus on the latter in this guide to the very best of the bunch…

We might use affiliate links in this post. Basically, you click em’ and we get a little something from your booking or purchase. They help us keep offering more and more in-depth surf guides to awesome places all around the globe. So, thanks for that!

This is just one part of our complete overall guide to surfing in Morocco This is also a part of our complete  guide to surf camps

A quick-click look at the top surf camps in Morocco this year

  • Wave Gypsy Surf & Yoga – Our best all-round surf camp in Morocco in 2024!
  • The Truck Surf Hotel – For a real adventure (surfing multiple spots)
  • The Surf Hotel Morocco – For advanced surfers
  • Manzili Surf House – The best women’s surf camp in Morocco

  • La Vida Surf – Getting out in nature and exploring Morocco’s cultural side
  • Holy Surf Maroc – Short surf breaks

When to do a surf camp in Morocco?

Before we get stuck into the camps, let’s just clear one thing up: The seasons matter in Morocco.

There are some guides out there on the big, wide internet that claim peak summer dates are great for surfing in Morocco if you’re a learner. We wonder if that veteran surfer ChatGPT had anything to do with those write-ups because the truth is that summer is the very pits of the low season on the Moroccan Atlantic.

The reason? The wind. Swell is always around but the wind really whips up as the northerlies begin to flow from Essaouira and the Med. You can go days and days without a rideable wave, so we really wouldn’t reccomend it, no matter your level.

The peak season is the European winter, between November and March. That sees very consistent NW swells that will be big for advanced surfers in places like Anchor Point but much, much smaller for the surf schools in places like Tamraght (where you’ll notice many of the surf camps are located).

Our two cents would be to get as close to the heart of the winter as you can. Shoulder seasons like autumn and spring still beat the summer but reliability and clean-wave days become more likely nearer to Jan.

Wave Gypsy Surf & Yoga

Gypsy Surfer and Yoga

  • Location: Tamraght
  • Best for: All round best camp for 2024!
  • Price: Deals start at $746 (£610) for four nights

We’ve got plenty of great things to say about Wave Gypsy Surf & Yoga . Plonked into the middle of the weaving, winding alleys that make up the backstreets of Tamraght, this is a surf camp with proper character.

It’s done out like a classic Berber coast cottage, with tiled patios and lazy seats, and cozy rooms covered in traditional artwork. Basically, it’s a super nice place to bed down between surf sessions.

Like most of the very best surf camps in Morocco, the focus here is on fun sessions that help you improve whilst also enjoying all that the country has to offer. Through a week-long package, you’ll do five surf lessons with either Taoufiq (maestro longboarder) or Franky (ISA-certified) and five yoga classes (in the evenings).

They really make the most of the mellower spots on the south side of Taghazout but are never shy of straying further to the more exposed breaks to the north when groups are more advanced. In fact, that’s definitely one of the strong points here: The camp is very well set up for all levels and multi-level groups.

You can also base yourself here for all manner of add-on tours. Choose the day in Paradise Valley to be whisked into the Mini Atlas mountains for wild swims in natural oases. Or choose the souk outing to get down and exploring the frenetic bazaars of old-town Agadir.

(Ohhh yea, and forget about the stress of getting here, because this one throws in airport transfers to and from Agadir for all guests gratis!)

A note on why we partner with BookSurfCamps.com : Book Surf Camps are probably the biggest online aggregator of surf camps and surf-yoga packages in the world. We sounded out a quite a few potential partners before we affiliated with them. But, in the end, the abundance of choice for beginners, intermediates, and female-only surfing sealed it. We also love the simplicity of their booking system and the trusted brand name, along with the focus on connecting with homegrown local businesses on the ground.

The Truck Surf Hotel

Surf Hotel Morocco

  • Location: All over!
  • Best for: A real surf adventure
  • Price: Deals start at $696 (£550) for seven days

The Truck Surf Hotel has already blazed a trail in Portugal, offering accomodation on wheels and multi-stop surf packages for all levels. The good news? The guys who run it bring the whole thing over to Morocco for the peak wave season in North Africa, plotting a route between Agadir all the way to Essaouira, offering access to all the famous spots around Taghazout but also the peeling points of Imsouane, and umpteen totally secret locations that we’d be hunted down if we mentioned.

So, you’ll be staying in a converted Mercedes Actros that, once expanded to its full height and width, contains two storeys and five double bedrooms, plus a kitchen and lounge-terrace area. Each day and night the van passes through the key locations, where you’ll surf and chill, and get to enjoy views that the land-lubber hotels on this list could only dream of.

Because they can move around, they manage to pack in loads. Theres the ubiqutous daily surf session, which even comes with video analysis. But there are also stops in ancient medinas, yoga in the desert, and sand surfing excursions.

Check prices at The Truck Surf Hotel right now

The Surf Hotel Morocco

Surf Hotel Morocco

  • Best for: More advanced surfers who want lots of yoga practice
  • Price: Deals start at $798 (£631) for seven nights

The Surf Hotel Morocco is more a traditional holiday stay than the more rustic retreats over in Taghazout and Tamraght. As its name implies, it’s built like a proper hotel, with twin and double rooms spread over a series of floors and meeting at a communal lobby space. Don’t worry – there’s still the quintessential rooftop terrace on offer, complete with sea views.

What we like about their 8-day package is that it’s honed for people who already know how to surf. That means session will be more technical and the spots you surf are likely to be a bit more diverse and challenging than just the few that spread up and down the beginner beaches north of Agadir.

In-house yoga instructors ensure that you’ve got a steady supply of chakra alignment included, six separate sessions, in fact. All food is included, from breakfast to dinner, along with a packed lunch at the surf spots.

Check prices at The Surf Hotel Morocco right now

Manzili Surf House

Manzili Surf House

  • Best for: Female surfers
  • Price: Deals start at $798 (£567) for seven days and six nights

We like Manzili Surf House becuase they’ve gone and crafted one of the few female-only surf camps in Morocco. It’s – just like most all of the options listed here – set in the town of Tamraght close to the major surf town of Taghazout, which is great for all levels, what with Banana Point working on one side and the K12 A-frame firing on the other.

Naturally, the main draw is that it’s lady’s only. That provides a safe space for surfers looking to break into the sport, since you’ll be doing your lessons throughout the week in the company of likeminded women. It’s great for building bonds and making new friendships.

While we’d say that four guided sessiosn is hardly an overload of surfing, there are afternoon free surf sessions packed into the schedule when you can go away and hone your skills. On top of that, there are nice extras, like mint tea on the beach and evening aperitifs on the rooftop terrace (which is downright lovely, by the way!).

Check prices at Manzili Surf House right now

Amayour Surf Hostel

Amayour Surf Camp

  • Location: Taghazout
  • Best for: The social vibe
  • Price: Deals start at $570 (£464) for eight days

Amayour Surf Hostel might not have the Scandi-cool design features of some nifty camps these days, but it gets one very, very important thing right: It’s FUN. Like, super, duper fun.

The instructors and guestshere are very chilled and very easy going. They offer some of the most accessible tuition we’ve come across in the region, in a way that’s easy to understand and – did we mention this already? – fun!

The setting? Classic Taghazout , the single most famous surf destination in Morocco. Amayour Surf sits on the south side of the main town, literally steps from the peeling rights that cruise into the bay from December to March.

There aren’t currently any fully-fledged surf packages at Amayour. Just book your bed and go. They run a sort of pay-as-you-go schedule of surf lessons, yoga, and extra trips to the Mini Atlas and Agadir old town, so you can really plan your schedule to suit what you want to do.

Check prices at Amayour Surf Hostel right now

The Yogi Surfer

The Yogi Surfer

  • Best for: Yogis
  • Price: Deals start at $979 (£799) for seven nights

2023 was the year that the The Yogi Surfer made the big time. It was featured in more travel mags this year than you can shake a tagine at.

Well…The plaudits were totally deserved. The pad is just incredible. It’s perched on the dusty ridges overlooking Plage Aourir to the south and the long Plage Imourane to the north, both of which have surf within walking distance if you want it.

With a whiff of the luxuriant Moroccan riad about it, The Yogi Surfer offers dorm and double options that are clad in patterned tiles and replete with wicker furnishings. But it’s the exterior that steals the show, specifically up on the roof. Head there to find a sun-kissed patio with a pool gazing out over the Atlantic. Downstairs is a calm room with a round sharing table suited to co-working.

You can book individually at The Yogi Surfer, but we’d say the packages are better bang for your buck. They included daily surfing and both Pranayama and Yin yoga run by the guru of all things meditation and mind Catherine Gallagher.

There’s uber-nutritious food included, cooked by in-house Moroccan chefs each night. (The whole thing is veggie-friendly)

Check prices at The Yogi Surfer right now

La Vida Surf

La Vida

  • Location: Ait Bihi (near Taghazout)
  • Best for: Nature lovers and culture buffs
  • Price: Deals start at $854 (£697) for seven days/six nights

No list of the best surf camps in Morocco could possibly skip out on La Vida Surf. It’s not quite like the other places on offer here, since its hosted in Villa Dar Shajara…

Instead of jostling for space right by the beach, the stay is immersed in the rolling deserts of Ait Bihi (A UNESCO reserve, no less), between the scrawly argon trees and sand dunes.

We guess the downside to that is that you won’t be able to walk to the breaks. But it hardly matters if you ask us, because the upside is a proper Moroccan country retreat surrounded by nature, sunrise yoga sessions on the rooftop shala, and a proper escape.

The hotel itself is cozy and charming. There’s a walled-off pool with Moroccan tiles that glint under the sun, and a couple of pomegranate trees for shade.

Packages with La Vida are very well rounded. They take care of the surf – there are daily sessions that include no more than four people per instructor. But there are also cultural activities for good measure, like a guided morning hike and outings to the Atlas. We also love that all the food here is plant based. It’s very much the camp of choice for the eco-conscious, vegan/veggie, health buff.

Check prices at La Vida Surf right now

Holy Surf Maroc

Holy Surf Maroc

  • Location: Sidi Kaouki, Essaouira
  • Best for: Short surf trips as part of a larger Moroccan adventure
  • Price: Deals start at $291 (£238) for three nights

One of the best short surf packages in Morocco comes courtesy of the folks over in Holy Surf Maroc . This is also a top option if you wanted to steer clear of the busiest section of breaks on the Agadir shores up to Taghazout. The reason? This lodge is closer to the wind city of Essaouira, which means the chances are that your playground will be the all-level stretch of sand at Sidi Kaouki (which usually means smaller crowds).

The three-day package might be short but it’s got a strong focus on performance. All lessons are taken by Federal Brevet F1-ceritifed instructors and the equipment is some of the better-quality stuff we’ve seen in Moroccan waters. You’ll be staying in a traditional Moroccan coastal lodge with its own pool and gardens. Trips also include daily yoga sessions and all meals – think homemade tagines and mezze plates.

Holy Surf Maroc also run an 8-day package if you’re keen on longer jaunts.

Check prices at Holy Surf Maroc right now

The winter is the best time to do a surf camp in Morocco. There are waves all year round here, but the wind is stronger in the summer months. It will usually die down by November time, starting a season that lasts until around March. Total beginner surfers will still have a great time in the summer, but it will be hotter at that time of the year.

The town of Taghazout is the capital of surf camps in Morocco. It’s got loads of really great options and access to all sorts of surf breaks, with waves for complete beginners to the south and breaks for more advanced surfers near Anchor Point to the west.

Avg. water temperature ‍ From 16 C° in January up to 22 C° in August

You will spend the week in a Mercedes truck with a special system that allows the walls and the ceiling to expand upwards, thus transforming the truck into a double-decker hotel on wheels. Daniela and Eduardo  be your hosts and surf guides for the week. They love surfing and traveling with their Surf Truck... and you will love it too! ‍ On the top floor of the truck you find the rooms: 4 shared double rooms with bunk bed , and 1 private double room with a double bed. We recommend you the private double room if you're traveling with a partner. Every room comes with air conditioning and a locker. On the bottom floor you find a living room with couches and a table (and a projector to check the surf footage in the evening!). The kitchen is fully equipped and you can cook your own meals. Also on the bottom floor, there is a toilet and – in the room next to it – a bathroom with a nice warm shower. On the outside terrace you can chill on the bean bags, relax and enjoy beautiful sunsets. The Surf Truck maximum capacity is 8 people.
