I booked a weeklong trip to a mystery destination. I had a lot of fun, but I'd do a few things differently next time.

• I booked a solo  trip to a mystery destination with a company that planned everything for me.
• I traveled to Lisbon and enjoyed group tours and activities — as well as some alone time.
• It was fun to step outside my comfort zone, but I would have liked more time to explore by myself.

When traveling, I prefer leaving things to chance, as many of my most memorable moments typically happen on less-crowded streets or when I'm chatting up strangers at a restaurant.

That's why when my friend suggested I check out Journee — a travel company that specializes in mystery tours and plans everything, including your destination — I couldn't resist trying it out for a solo trip .

Companies like Journee have become more popular in recent years as more travelers lean into the idea of having a trip planned for them. In fact, a survey of 27,000 travelers by Booking.com found that over half of the respondents would welcome the idea of a trip to an unknown destination.

I was excited to see what all the hype was about and book a surprise trip of my own. Here's what it was like to travel to an unknown destination with Journee.

The company asked me questions about my travel preferences and sent clues leading up to the reveal

When booking my trip, the company provided me with an in-depth travel questionnaire that asked about my interests, curiosities, risk tolerance, well-being, and overall travel philosophy. It also dug into the "why" of my trip, the safety criteria, and logistics and budget.

The company then sent me a trip proposal, which provided a few clues about the city I'd be traveling to. There was no pressure to book and the proposal itself was completely free.

Once I committed, they built up the suspense by gamifying the pre-trip content, slipping fun facts and clues into my WhatsApp DMs.

I challenged myself (and my friends) to rely on our brains (no Googling) to figure out where I might be going, which led to many meaningful conversations about travel.

The company also provided a high-level packing list , which included items like a bank card, phone, charger, passport, and comfortable walking shoes.

The destination reveal turned out to be pretty underwhelming

On the day of departure, I added some euros to my carry-on before taking an Uber to Newark Airport. In the car, I found myself daydreaming about my destination, secretly hoping it was somewhere I'd never been.

My plan to film a reveal video at the airport was quickly foiled when my driver informed me that Newark has two international terminals.

Because the tour company didn't note the terminal information on the envelope, I had no choice but to open the card in the car, which was underwhelming.

However, I was excited by the location listed on my card — Lisbon.

Along with the destination, the envelope included a detailed itinerary with daily pre-booked excursions, including an e-bike tour and a sunset cruise, with one free day to myself.

The company did a great job arranging my accommodations and activities

I arrived in Lisbon mid-morning after my basic-economy flight . I was relieved to find the company booked me a studio apartment with a sweeping balcony overlooking the street.

I liked being in a residential area, and the proximity to a metro hub and grocery stores made it feel like I had moved abroad.

My first group excursion turned out to be a one-on-one personalized e-bike tour of the city when folks bailed because of the rain.

My city guide took me on a two-hour tour along the Tagus River waterfront, and I ended up taking that same route several times throughout the week.

I also enjoyed the other trips Journee booked for me, including a drive along the countryside to a small village southeast of the city. Here, my group dodged the rain to visit a Stonehenge-like megalithic complex dating back 7,000 years .

One of the last curated events of the trip was visiting the Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Feeling utter tranquility in the cloisters was worth the 90 minutes I spent waiting in line.

As the week went on, I started veering from the pre-planned schedule

Although I enjoyed the group excursions, I worried that I wouldn't have enough time to explore the city on my own. That's why I decided to skip my third-day excursion to wander off the beaten path.

I weaved through the Alcântara district, stopping at the LXFactory, an old industrial textile complex turned food and art hall.

I also biked to explore the Mouraria and Alfama districts, filling up on bacalhau, Lisbon's salted codfish tapas. I even spent a few hours at the Fado Museum , an interactive and immersive cultural arts center where I learned about the history of Portugal's soulful music.

I loved being able to explore another side of the city, which hadn't been in my original itinerary.

I enjoyed the trip, but would make a few changes next time

Overall, it was exciting to step outside my comfort zone and hand over the travel planning to someone else. I loved the surprise of not knowing the destination and visiting historical sites off the beaten path.

Next time, I would book with a friend and have a more direct conversation with the tour company about having more time for independent exploration.

Indian Stock Exchange Launches Index to Track Travel Listings — India Report

A new stock market index to track the performance of the travel sector is an indicator of the segment's growth in India. Travel companies are having a dream run at the Indian bourses. It remains to be seen whether this demand will sustain over the long term.

India’s National Stock Exchange has launched the Nifty India Tourism Index to capture the performance of travel and tourism companies within the Nifty 500 Index. The index is used by investors to manage their investment portfolios and serve as a benchmark for different purposes, including tracking expected returns of certain segments. 

The creation of a separate stock market index for tourism indicates significant demand and investor interest in tourism and travel related stocks in India. Recent stock market debuts of TBO Tek and Ixigo reflect strong investor sentiment towards the industry. 

The index is tracking the performance of companies across all these sectors. Companies such as IndiGo, EaseMyTrip, BLS International, Oberoi Hotels and Resorts, GMR Airports Infrastructure, Lemon Tree Hotels, Chalet Hotels, and Mahindra Holidays and Resorts India have been included in the index to track the sectoral movement.

This initiative is in line with NSE’s recent endeavors to cater to emerging market trends. The other industries for which NSE has sectoral indices include banks, autos, FMCG, pharmaceuticals, information technology, realty, healthcare, oil and gas and more.

Travel Industry in India: The index has been created when there is a strong push towards development of the tourism and travel sector in India. Travel and tourism are two of the largest industries in India, with a total contribution of about $199.6 billion to the country’s GDP, according to India’s branding and communication arm India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF) .

The government has been working to introduce several schemes to promote domestic tourism, even as its global promotion budget reduced by 97% . The aviation sector is expanding, as more airports are being opened to serve the smaller cities. Meanwhile, airlines including IndiGo and Air India have placed significant aircraft orders to expand their domestic and international operations. 

Hotel chains are also looking at Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities to drive their growth. 

Air India Launches Three-Class Configuration for Narrowbody Fleet

Full-service carrier Air India has unveiled a three-class configuration for its newly inducted A320neo narrowbody aircraft. The airline will offer Business, Premium Economy, and Economy cabin classes on domestic and short-haul international routes. 

The airline is working to introduce the three-class configuration across its entire narrowbody fleet over the next year. Its existing fleet is being inducted for refit, and the new aircraft will be delivered in accordance with this configuration, the company said in a statement. 

The new configuration will be available starting July 1 on Delhi-Bengaluru and Delhi-Chandigarh routes. 

InterGlobe Enterprises to Open 5 Hotels in Europe Under Miiro Brand

Indian aviation and hospitality conglomerate InterGlobe Enterprises is set to launch a collection of individually designed hotels in Europe under its new lifestyle hotel brand — Miiro. Over the next two years, the company is set to open five properties. 

Miiro hotels in Paris and Barcelona are scheduled to open this year, while London and Vienna properties will be launched in 2025, the company said in a statement. 

Miiro is a part of InterGlobe’s diversification strategy into Europe. The company has said it would launch hotel properties in key locations across the continent. 

Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels Brings The Park Brand to Uttarakhand

Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels has signed a new The Park-branded hotel in Nainital, Uttarakhand. The 65-key property will mark the luxury boutique hotel brand’s entry into the northern state of Uttarakhand. 

The hotel is expected to open by October 2025. The company, that launched an IPO earlier this year, is looking to double its room inventory in India over the next five years. It currently operates 30 hotels across 20 cities in the country.

Delhi Airport Helps Cut Check-In Time With Self Bag Drop Facility  

Delhi international airport has introduced a self-service baggage quick drop facility across terminals 1 and 3. The newly installed machines are an upgrade from the self baggage drop facility installed by the airport at terminal 3 last year . 

The newly installed 50 machines across the two terminals are meant to facilitate faster baggage check-ins within 30 seconds,  Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said. These machines do not require boarding pass scanning or biometric validation as baggage tags from self check-in kiosks contain the relevant information. 

According to DIAL, Delhi is the second airport to introduce this feature after Toronto. The baggage drop facility is currently available for passengers flying on Air India, IndiGo and Air India Express.

Southwest Airlines selling $53 tickets in celebration of 53 years of flights

Southwest Airlines is celebrating turning 53 with $53 airfares.

Travelers hoping to score a deal need to book by 11:59 p.m. PT Thursday.

The $53 one-way tickets are only available on select days and routes but include flights to Hawaii, Puerto Rico and international destinations, according to Southwest.

Eligible travel must occur on Mondays-Thursdays or Saturdays between Aug. 6 and Dec. 18 for flights within the lower 48 with  Sept. 2, Oct. 14, Nov. 22-27 and Nov. 29 through Dec. 2 as blackout dates. 

Flights to Hawaii, Puerto Rico and international destinations must occur on Tuesdays or Wednesdays between Aug. 20 and Nov. 20, with Sept. 3 blacked out. 

Some of the routes currently advertising $53 fares are Atlanta to Tampa and Los Angeles to Phoenix.

Have Esquites, Will Travel (to the Picnic)

Kay Chun’s esquites recipe captures all the elements of elotes in a salad: charred sweet corn, tangy lime, creamy cotija and spicy ancho chile.

If I were mayor of Picnictown, every picnic would have the following: a blanket , a 1:1 dog-to-human ratio and esquites. The blanket’s there because grass is itchy no matter what the most outdoorsy person in the group says; the dogs because dogs are great. The esquites are essential because my favorite outdoor corn is elotes , but they don’t travel nearly as well as esquites. (The laws of Picnictown consider how easy it is to carry your picnic things on public transportation.)

This is barely a compromise, though, because Kay Chun’s esquites capture all the beloved and balanced elements of elotes: sweet summer corn, tangy lime, creamy cotija (and crema), spicy ancho chile. The smoky flavor you get from grilled corn is here, too, as the kernels are charred in a hot skillet until browned and caramelized. Perhaps the most enticing part of the recipe is this note from Kay: “Leftovers transform quickly into a great pasta salad the next day; simply toss with cooked pasta and olive oil.” Picnictown loves a resourceful pasta salad.

More picnic decrees, because it’s the first day of summer! Make Zainab Shah’s sheet-pan chicken tikka thighs ahead of time, and then toss some roti or naan in your tote bag for effortless but extremely delicious sandwiches. Ali Slagle’s green bean salad with dill pickles and feta is perfect all by itself, but if someone else wanted to bring a container of cooked barley or farro, that would be a really nice collaborative grain bowl picnic moment. Every June, the summer produce flows into and overwhelms my corner grocery store, and every June I am positively giddy about it. Right now the shelves are buckling from so many cherry tomatoes, and I’m doing my part with salad e-shirazi , basil and tomato fried rice and salmon and tomatoes in foil , a five-star, five-ingredient dinner from Mark Bittman.

I am trying to be more adventurous with my vegetables, branching out and bringing home goodies I don’t usually cook. I’ve never really loved bitter melon ( I’m not alone ), but I do like bitter things — extra dark chocolate, dandelion greens, Campari. So I’m going to try this stir-fried bitter melon with eggs , a recipe from Chutatip Suntaranon (known as Nok) adapted by Cathy Erway. The creamy scrambled eggs, salty soy sauce and molasses-y brown sugar will mellow out the harshest edges of the bitter melon. And I trust Nok — I’ve had the pleasure of dining at Kalaya, Nok’s restaurant in Philadelphia , and Nok never misses.

Lastly: It’s hot out there, and I’d like to give you an excuse to stand in front of the open refrigerator after a long afternoon in Picnictown. Here’s Lisa Donovan’s new recipe for buttermilk tres leches cake , which is best served extremely chilled, straight from the pan. I interpret this as spooning giant mouthfuls of cold, creamy cake into my mouth while bending into the fridge, but if you’d like to use plates and forks and a table, by all means.

Customs agent admits to stealing $18,700 during Florida airport screenings

The Customs and Border Protection officer pleaded guilty to stealing from 18 passengers while on duty at Naples Airport

A man who was working as a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent in Florida pleaded guilty this week to stealing about $18,700 in cash from arriving fliers during airport screenings.

According to a plea agreement, William Joseph Timothy, 43, stole from 18 passengers between mid-2023 and January of this year while on duty at Naples Airport. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Naples Airport, which calls itself “ The Best Little Airport in the Country ,” does not have commercial airline service but — alongside flight schools and sightseeing tours — hosts wealthier clientele taking private charters. With the Caribbean close by, many flights are international and necessitate border enforcement and customs screenings.

CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility investigated Timothy’s case and uncovered 17 total incidents, including one involving two passengers. In a criminal complaint filed in January, Senior Special Agent Sapphia Small outlined one theft caught on camera.

In May 2023, video surveillance footage showed, Timothy conducted a border and currency inspection for a passenger who had traveled to Naples on a private aircraft from the Bahamas. Footage showed the passenger handing over his cash to Timothy, who, while counting it, set aside about $2,200 worth of $100 bills and covered them up with customs declarations forms.

After the passenger departed, Timothy picked up the forms and the concealed cash and walked away, according to the complaint. The passenger realized afterward their cash was missing.

Timothy went on to steal at least $2,000 from passengers on three more occasions, according to court documents, and at least $1,000 from six others.

Timothy pleaded guilty Tuesday to converting property of another as an officer or employee of the United States. As part of the plea agreement, he also agreed to pay “full restitution” to victims and resign immediately from the CBP, the U.S. attorney’s office for Middle Florida said.

A sentencing date has not yet been set.

“Mr. Timothy is very remorseful, and has accepted responsibility for the actions alleged,” Douglas Molloy, Timothy’s defense attorney, wrote to The Washington Post in a statement. “It is not appropriate for me to comment further until his sentencing.”

CBP did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Naples Airport served more than 200,000 passengers in fiscal year 2023, according to the Naples Airport Authority. Southwest Florida International Airport, the region’s commercial hub, last year served more than 10 million .
