What is Study Tour?

What is Study Tour?

So what exactly is a study tour? The answer to that question depends entirely on who you are and what you’re doing. Is it a group of people studying at a university, or is it just a student taking an extracurricular trip? There are many benefits to both types of trips, but I’ll touch on the main advantages here. Whether you’re looking for a field trip or studying abroad, a study tour is a great way to learn more about a new country.

If you are interested in an overseas study tour, you have come to the right place. With DIS Study Tours, you can explore cities across Europe, including London, Vienna, and the Netherlands. You can also visit Poland and the Faroe Islands. In addition, DIS also arranges trips to places such as Iceland and the Faroe Islands, which you can explore on a study tour. There are many advantages to studying abroad.

Group of people

A study tour is an educational trip designed to help a group of people learn more about another country’s education system. Typically, it will be accompanied by a university academic who teaches the course. A group may also have accompanying staff, which may be from the university itself or an external third-party organization. The accompanying staff may not be present when the study tour group arrives at its destination.

Before heading on a study tour, it is important to determine the purpose of the field trip. Study tours are great for exploring the world and learning about its different aspects. During the tour, students will gain valuable insight into the different cultures and ways of life. The goal of a study tour is to help students become aware of the world and its people, and the faculty member leading the tour will be an excellent resource for this purpose. Faculty members should also have a thorough knowledge of the area they will visit in order to assist students with their questions.

Experiential learning

One way to learn from experience is to take a study tour. Study tours provide students with a first-hand look at a particular country’s culture, history, and geography. In addition, students can engage in hands-on activities such as cooking, shopping, and hiking, as well as attend seminars, workshops, and other educational events. Study tours are also excellent opportunities to meet people from other countries and explore their local culture.

Site visits

In addition to classroom lessons, site visits are an important component of study tours. In addition to gaining insight into different work environments, these site visits allow students to learn about career transitions from company employees. The BU’s BEST program designs site visits for students in different career tracks. Here are some tips for students considering a site visit:

For educators, Study tour excursions offer the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the world. This knowledge can be used to enrich the cultural exchange within their classrooms and communities. Participants travel with other educators who have the same interest in global exploration and cultural exchange. The purpose of these tours is to help participants learn from others and foster long-term partnerships. To learn more about Study tour excursions, read on. Here are three examples of what to expect during a study tour.

Academic content

The academic content of a study tour is a crucial aspect of the educational process. Students travel to a European country and meet with academics, business experts, and government officials to gain a deeper understanding of the country’s policies. Students will complete as much on-site research as possible. The topics of previous study tours have ranged from EU enlargement to the Euro financial crisis. During the study tour, students will gather in Brussels for lectures, meet with members of the European Parliament, and engage in a mini-parliament exercise.

Learners of the World: The Benefits of Study Tours to Students

Note: This post contains affiliate links. Know that, we only share companies and services I know and trust to be valuable recommendations to our readers.

What is a study Tour?

A study tour is an experience where students study abroad as an alternative to traditional classroom-based learning. Students are required to meet course objectives and graded on specific learning outcomes based on the class syllabus. Traditional travel destinations include:

  • Europe region
  • Asia region
  • Latin America region
  • USA and Canda region
  • Austraila region
  • New Zeland region

The most common ages for travelers are 18-35 years old.

Here are the benefits of study tours to students:

Aids in learning.

As one famous adage goes and I quote, “There's no education quite like the lessons of travel.” It is a great and effective way to learn specific subjects beyond textbooks and lectures. Joining a study tour with an expert guide who's very knowledgeable about the place or topic is like having on-hand answers to questions that may not be fully accounted in some books. A study gives you a solid picture of how or what one really is when seen in person.

When we talk of a sculpture, let's say the famous Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, Denmark, seeing it on a picture, many of us may have said to ourselves, I wonder how it looks in person or what made it very interesting. Once you see the actual piece and how impressive and detailed the work is, then you now have instant answers to your questions. Most famous sites even have their own facilities that hold records of a site's/subject's history, founding and everything related to it.

Creates a new and fun experience

We may have heard from someone before that “we learn from experience.” While good teaching is still an important learning foundation for each of us (especially during our younger years – and I don't think that can be easily replaced) the world is also an effective classroom. Although classroom learning can be rewarding, long hours of lectures may sometimes be a daunting event; an option for a study tour anytime in the course of study can be an exciting and fun new experience that students may look forward to.

A study tour helps students appreciate their field of study more and it really helps them better realize the interaction between their chosen fields of study to the rest of the world. Study tours help students open themselves to many possibilities that are not just contained in one geographical location or culture.

Study tours expose students to other cultures

Study tours can be a great way to learn new things about different cultures and be aware of certain differences between them, as well as similarities. It makes students see certain issues in a new perspective and some study tours even allow students to immerse themselves in a different community even if it's just a short period of time. In return, they are exposed to cultures of different socio-economic statuses which help them build compassion and better understanding for these cultures. To a certain extent, we can say that study tours allow people to gain a new perspective on things simply because they've been there; they have experienced it and somehow built a connection to that culture or place.

Opportunity to find new interests and enhance existing ones

After traveling to many places, there will be different things you'll see that may not be available or done in your area or country. Being exposed first hand to things related to your study, as well as new things you'll see for the first time, there are a lot of opportunities for you to discover new interests or enhance existing passions. A lot of business ideas nowadays are based on things they saw in another place but couldn't find it in another – so they decide to build one.

Builds friendship and enhance social skills

Spending time with people outside of the classroom and exploring and finding new things together definitely allows students to have and share a common experience. Especially if you are traveling to a different country for your study tour, before leaving it is definitely advisable to somehow learn quite a few words as well as common practices in that country for a better social experience. Let's say, you are traveling to Denmark, it wouldn't hurt to learn a few helpful Danish words, don't you think? And once you're in that country, maximize the opportunity to socialize with locals; you might learn a thing or two that is way different from the country you came from.

Good study tours offer great possibilities to people of different ages and cultures. They are definitely an effective tool for experiential learning not only about your field of study but also its relation and effects to different places and culture . Study tours may be arranged to accommodate both small and large groups and depending on your needs. Check out your course syllabus if a study tour is included or reputable travel agencies to find out more about your options for great study trips.

So go ahead! Take advantage of a study tour opportunity, make new friends, increase your knowledge and understanding, and explore new terrains, people, and culture.

At Stetson, we’ve used SRAS to arrange all of our student study abroad trips for the past five or six years. During that time we’ve sent dozens of students on summer- and semester-long programs in Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Irkutsk. In every interaction I’ve had with them, SRAS has been prompt, reliable, knowledgable, courteous and quick to lend a hand when needed.
Just yesterday my student successfully defended her honors thesis on environmentalism around Lake Baikal, a project that would not have been possible without the fieldwork that she conducted on her SRAS study abroad program in Irkutsk. I hope to see more such projects in the future and will keep directing students to SRAS programs!

AUG Study Tour

  • Why Study Tour

study tour is

At AUG, we believe that education is one of the most important investments in life, especially overseas education. Thus, choosing the right education pathway and university is essential. The Study Tour Program can play an important role in helping one make the right choice.

The Study Tour Program encourages students to immerse themselves in an overseas study environment, exposing students to campus life and culture in hopes of broadening the student’s outlook towards world class institutions in Australia, UK, USA and Singapore among others. Apart from building academic capability, study tour also aims at building life skills such as team work, communication, problem solving skills and decision making that are only obtained through life experience. This program gives students the opportunity to live in a global community, exposed to different cultures, religions and ethnic backgrounds to truly broaden their horizons and become a global citizen.

Studying abroad and participating in Study tours can be a bit scary for students, and often it produces even more anxiety for the parents who stay at home. While it’s reasonable to discuss concerns about finances, safety and academics with your child before they go overseas, these questions shouldn’t prevent your child from taking advantage of all the remarkable opportunities and advantages that studying abroad has to offer.

Read more for AUG’s Top Five (5) Reasons why let your child join Study Tours.

5 REASON WHY LET YOUR CHILD JOIN STUDY TOURS

Global Citizenship

With the increasing globalization and internationalization happening everywhere, it is vital for your child to expand their worldview, to be taken out of their comfort zone and get an opportunity to appreciate others way of living. AUG’s Study Tour will connect your children with the rest of the world in a way that’s hard to achieve from home. Through this environment, they will build a deeper understanding of global issues and start to think globally. This process of connecting to foreign places and building empathy with people from other nationalities will make your children better global citizens, which is a crucial part of living in a global society.

Build International Competency

Having the experience to live in a foreign country for a couple of weeks, give the students a newfound sense of independence and discipline as an individual and sets an unshakeable sense of confidence and a new perspective on the world. This also translates to great leadership skills, which is likely part of why employers value study abroad in a resume. AUG makes a tailored-fit program for the students which suits their preferences. Employers value not just students’ grades, but also their wider curriculum, including participation in societies, voluntary work and study trips abroad. With the increased financial instability and availability of a foreign workforce, continuous CV building is an essential requirement for students to be able to fully participate in the global economy as young adults.

World Class Destination for Higher Education

AUG represents many world-renowned institutions in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. We can arrange your child’s study tour based on their preferences at the best student places like, London, Boston, Oxford and Melbourne. Our study tour ensures a smooth-sailing journey for the students and let them experience the best programs with prestigious and reputable universities worldwide. Such opportunity enables your child to make informed decisions in selecting the Institution for their education. Thus, letting them enjoy and be inspired on finishing their studies and achieve their life goals.

Local Culture Immersion

Sharing to our students about a country’s way of living is one thing, having them encounter it first-hand is a completely different and more exciting adventure. Living the culture not only makes it a lot easier for these students to understand but also makes it a lot more enjoyable and fun.  AUG gives the students an enabling environment for them to learn and experience the country’s norms and way of living. It is also amazing platform for them to practice their language skills, especially the communicative skills of understanding and speaking. Many find that interacting with different cultures has a lasting impact on a student’s educational journey and most specifically their own way of life.

Gain Lifelong Friends and Colleagues

Students on a school trip get a chance to meet new people, offering lots of avenues to practice their social skills. It furthermore allows them to make new friends: be that with locals or with other students on the trip, who, due to whatever reason, they never really got to know until now. AUG opens a long-lasting relationship and camaraderie between our students, teachers and institutions. Sharing certain experiences provides a strong bond and friendship between people and gives them Global connection and the opportunity to relive the memories with others again and again in the future.

3 Reasons Why Study Tours Are Key To Your Organisation’s Culture

Culture is key to any successful organisation. Over the recent years, research with astonishing figures surfaced on the internet that shows the correlation between culture and an organisation’s performance. To put it simply, culture is no longer a “nice-to-have”, it is an essential success factor.

Organisations have started to shift their views on workplace culture, placing more value on their employees’ wellbeing and mental health. From administering weekly team lunches, flexible workplace programs to wellness programs, there are multiple ways to encourage a more positive culture across the organisation. However, one of the most effective methods is to participate in a study tour with the rest of your team. A study tour is an opportunity for travel and study at the same time. It is a fun and interactive way of learning, gaining new skills while bonding with the rest of your organisation.

Here are three reasons why it’s key to an organisation’s success:

Forming Friendships Within The Organisation Will Improve Culture

When you are constantly in the workplace environment, it is tough to make friendships simply because the structure and stressful nature of work, makes it difficult to form meaningful relationships. Friendships form when there is a commonality between groups or individuals. Being able to leave workplace and experiencing something new for the first time will enable employees to really get to know their colleagues, and form long-lasting relationships.

Do not underestimate the value of friendships in the workplace! Knowing that you are going to work every morning to a group of people you actually enjoy working with is motivating, hence increasing employee productivity. Sharing experiences is the first step to mutual understanding, which will be useful in the future when work-related conflicts arise.

Encourage Collaboration Across Teams and Roles

By placing your team in a learning environment, rather than a traditionally “competitive” and stressful environment, like the workplace, they are in a position where they are able to freely help others. When you are just trying to learn something for the first time, there is no hierarchy. This means it will allow employees to connect more with their superiors and others around them.

Moreover, inviting teams outside your department will allow the teams to understand each other. Often, conflict and animosity arises when people do not communicate with each other. Silo’ed organisations often struggle with this, due to its structure. Study tours can break these barriers down to create a more collaborative environment, even across departments.

Happy Employees will Boost Productivity

Last but not least, research shows that employee happiness will increase productivity. An experiment conducted in 2015 shows that there is between a 12%-20% increase in workplace productivity compared to those that are unhappy with their workplace.

While conducting one study tour will not immediately change the way they feel about work, they will definitely be grateful for your gesture. Employees will recognise that a study tour is not a small investment and that the organisation is willing to invest in their current employees’ growth and education.

A Study Tour is a Small Investment for a Better Future

The benefits of study tours, as outlined above, compared to the cost of conducting one, is marginal. Invest in the employees you already have, increase the retention rate and save money on retraining new employees. This will not only improve efficiency, it will also increase organisational knowledge in the business.

Study tours should offer more 'learning' experience

study tour is

"Ink on paper can only convey so much, true understanding requires putting knowledge into action." The popularity of study tours continues increasing during the summer vacation. Many parents are arranging for their children to go on educational trips, in order to break the relative monotony of classroom education. By providing them immersive real-life experiences, parents are seeking to broaden their children's horizons, enhance their knowledge, and help them integrate learning with exploration and enjoyment.

According to the summer travel data forecast from several online travel platforms, this summer is expected to witness a huge surge in demand, surpassing that of the same period in 2019. Among the emerging trends, "study tours" are new for the tourism industry, contributing significantly to its gradual recovery and improvement.

In 2021 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism released the"14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Cultural Industries", which laid stress on the vigorous development of study tours. The plan is aimed at creating innovative study tour products that integrate cultural experiences, technological innovation, knowledge dissemination, entertainment, leisure and interactive parent-child activities.

According to available data, the number of participants in study tours reached 4.94 million in 2021, far exceeding the pre-pandemic figures. In 2022, the number crossed 6 million, an all-time high.

The concept of "combining learning with travel" has become a new consumer trend, with study tours becoming an emerging tourism model. Study tours promote the integration of "culture, tourism and education", a novel way to experience cultural tourism and engage in practical education by studying people's daily lives. Study tours also combine family education, school education and community education.

Compared to developed countries in Europe and the Americas, China's study tour market started relatively late, with a lower overall market penetration rate, indicating that there is still considerable untapped potential to expand the market.

According to the "China Study Tour Development Report 2022-23" published by the China Tourism Academy, since the joint release of the "Opinions on Promoting Study Tours for Primary and Secondary School Students" by the Ministry of Education and 11 other departments in 2016, people's understanding of study tours has increased. The study tour demographic now includes preschool children, primary, middle and high school students, as well as adults and senior citizens, representing a broader developmental space.

With the combined impetus of favorable policies and the demand for quality education, the study tour market has grown rapidly in recent years. This year, study tourism has experienced even more robust growth, with more than 5,000 "study camps" and related enterprises across the country. To better develop study tours and avoid superficial experiences, tourism destinations can focus on the following aspects:

To begin with, it is essential to clearly define the positioning of the study tour market and expand the supply chains of study tour products. To establish a distinct identity and highlight the core values of "research" and "learning", study tours should not only focus on providing immersive experiences but also prioritize educational aspects, integrating them through products and services. This approach will ensure study tours offer high-quality educational resources for students.

It is also crucial to continuously optimize the study tour product chains. This can be achieved by incorporating the latest educational concepts and technological advancements to create a complete industry chain encompassing base construction, itinerary design, qualified instructors, curriculum development, safety assurance and other essential elements. This comprehensive approach will drive high-quality development in the study tour sector.

Furthermore, there is a need to capitalize on the diverse resources of each region and cultivate study tours as a branded intellectual property. Local authorities should engage in comprehensive planning, and consider study tours to be a significant vehicle for cultural and educational enrichment.

They can delve deep into local intangible cultural heritage, the country's revolutionary culture, ethnic minority culture, and traditional Chinese culture, among other distinctive cultural traits, to promote unique study tours.

For instance, in June 2023, the Guizhou provincial cultural and tourism authorities announced six study tour routes centered on intangible cultural heritage. Leveraging Guizhou's abundant intangible cultural heritage resources and tourist attractions, the province developed high-quality specialized courses to attract more young students to go on study tours in Guizhou.

This initiative aims to facilitate the effective transformation of intangible cultural heritage resources into cultural and tourism intellectual property, ultimately developing the "Study in Guizhou" study tour brand and driving the high-quality development of the tourism industry in the province.

Finally, to enhance the quality of study tour products and promote innovation among students, it is important to prioritize content innovation in study tours. So, local authorities should tailor the development of prominent educational study tour activities with strong regional characteristics. They should introduce innovative elements, such as incorporating technology education, implementing interdisciplinary projects, and creating a series of exemplary study tour bases. Additionally, they can design influential and high-quality study tour itineraries.

Like Guizhou, other provinces and regions can also leverage local events such as Guizhou's "Chinese Rural Football Super League" or "Village Super", which has become a rage across the country, "Village Basketball" and the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope installed in Guizhou, to showcase their unique natural resources and cater to the demands of study tour travelers.

Reflections on our Study Tour to Pilau Bintan & Bandung by Liveris Scholars

Bhinneka tunggal ika – unity in diversity, our 2024 indonesian study tour.

Over the past few weeks, eleven Liveris Scholars had the incredible opportunity to participate in a short-term summer exchange at the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Over two weeks, we had the privilege of being culturally immersed in multiple Indonesian communities, visiting a variety of sustainable Indonesian businesses and most of all, forming unforgettable friendships with the people at ITB. Unlike a conventional summer course, our classroom learning was heavily supplemented with many hands-on experiences ranging from snorkelling to visiting Asia’s largest floating solar power plant. We are thankful for the New Colombo Plan (NCP) Mobility Grant, the Liveris Academy and ITB for making this experience possible.

Pilau Bintan (Bintan Island)

By Siddesh Karekal, Stavros Niarchos Foundation Scholar

We spent the first four days on Bintan Island in Indonesia, a 45-minute boat ride from Singapore. Although before going on the trip, I had never heard about Bintan, it was to be my favourite four days of the entire journey. We participated in multiple activities that included exploring the Doulos Phos ship , Bekarang (local community fishing), planting mangroves and learning a bit of Bahasa.

One of the highlights of our stay on Bintan was the homestay in Desa Pengudang, a regional community. This experience offered a vastly new experience for me - back home in Brisbane, my days constantly revolve around technology, and everything is very busy. Spending the night playing with locals on a coast with no reception, under the protection of the mosquito coils made the experience very special.

study tour is

Apart from the peaceful environment, the communities’ progressive views and actions taken to reduce global warming and protect the endangered Dugong population were eye-opening. Hearing how the community had adapted from eating Dugong as a delicacy to progressively accepting the government’s new teaching, and now protecting Dugong highlighted social change and how communal beliefs can be changed. Even when planting Mangroves, I noticed people had a strong emphasis on the circular economy, with reusable seedling pots being made from washed-up plastic bottles.

Finally, I was inspired and motivated by the strong sense of community and development in Pengudang, with Idel (a local fisherman and travel guide) volunteering to English to the younger generations to escape the poverty trap. These examples have shown me that social change can occur.

study tour is

Overall, although Bintan is very different from Australia culturally, the core values of empathy, friendliness and the concept of community are very similar between the two countries. I feel this allowed us to feel integrated into society, forge strong friendships with the local community and make memories that we will forever cherish.

Kota Bandung

by Daham Kannangara, Vice-Chancellor’s Scholar

Reflecting on my experience in Bandung, Indonesia, I am filled with gratitude and inspiration. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a warm welcome by the ITB staff and students, who generously offered us an abundance of food and drink. This hospitality set the tone for our entire stay.

School of Business and Management, Institut Teknologi Bandung (SBM ITB), West Java: On our first day, we attended a fascinating lecture by Dr. Bambang Rudito, who provided a comprehensive overview of the various ethnic groups in Indonesia. It was astonishing to learn about the sheer number of ethnic groups and the diverse law systems they employ to manage and avoid conflict. This insight was both eye-opening and educational.

Dr. Paul Lim followed with a thought-provoking lecture on the importance of ethics and morals in society. I found it intriguing how people's choices vary based on different situations and perspectives, highlighting the complexity of ethical decision-making.

Our campus tour, led by our buddies (the students from ITB), was both informative and enjoyable. We learned several key facts about ITB and captured some memorable photos. A highlight was a spontaneous game of basketball with local students, which added a fun and engaging element to our visit.

During our stay in Bandung, we embarked on several field trips that showcased local entrepreneurship and sustainability efforts.

PLTS Terapung Cirata Floating Solar PV Farm: One notable visit was to the Cirata floating solar power plant, where we learned about the innovative solutions implemented to overcome challenges and minimize the impact on the local community, biodiversity, and environment.

Kerajinan Eceng Gondok

by Charlotte Sargent, Liveris Academy Undergraduate Scholar

In learning about the intersection of sustainability, innovation and empowerment, and how these were applied within the cultural context, we visited the village Kampung Cicalengka, Mekarmukti, Kabupaten Bandung Barat, who use Eceng Gondok to weave. Known as Kerajinan Eceng Gondok, or ‘Water Hyacinth Craft’. The Water Hyacinth is an invasive species found in the dam that is home to the floating solar farm, in this project the weed is used to create baskets, bags, hats and more. Over 400 women have been taught how to weave, and thus gained a source of income. I enjoyed learning some basic weaving from the women there immensely, and gained a deeper appreciation for the time, skill and creativity required to make the beautiful wares. I was particularly interested at how the issue of the invasive weed was used to create multiple points of economic benefit: from the farmers who harvested and dried the plants to the women who weaved and sold the end products. Seeing how the community was able to turn a problem into an opportunity was remarkable.

MycoTech: Another memorable visit was to MycoTech Labs, where we observed the process of transforming agricultural waste into vegan leather. Chief Innovative Officer M. Arkha Bentangan L provided valuable insights into their sustainable practices, which were both enlightening and inspiring.

Dusun Bambu

by Shreyas Raman, Vice-Chancellor’s Scholar

Reflecting on my visit to Dusun Bambu, I am inspired by the park's commitment to sustainable tourism. The extensive use of bamboo in the flooring, walls, and ceilings showcased the practical application of eco-friendly practices, demonstrating how renewable resources can be effectively used in construction. This experience not only reinforced my academic understanding of sustainability but also provided a tangible example of how these principles are implemented in real-world settings. Additionally, the trip was enjoyable, allowing me to bond with fellow students in a beautiful and thoughtfully designed environment. Overall, the visit to Dusun Bambu was a perfect blend of education and enjoyment, making it a truly rewarding experience.

by Joshua Ryu, Liveris Academy Undergraduate Scholar

Amidst visiting local communities and engaging with cultural activities in Bandung and surrounding areas, we had a chance to relax at Dusun Bambu, a picturesque theme park by a beautiful pond. There, we were greeted with amazing local food, and enjoyed going on the rides and seeing some of the animals at the zoo there. Since the park was so big, we went through the park using a minibus – it was funny to squeeze everyone in the small seats! A highlight was going on small race cars, where the scholars and staff alike raced against each other and had fun! There were some iconic photos  taken at Dusun Bambu, like the one with the pond in the background, and the ones of people laughing as they came down a massive slide.

Batik Komar & Saung Angklung Udjo: We also visited Batik Komar, renowned for its traditional Indonesian batiks. The experience of learning and creating our own batiks was incredibly enjoyable, despite almost exhausting my budget on these beautiful pieces of art! The day culminated at Saung Angklung Udjo, where we immersed ourselves in Indonesian culture through vibrant dances and music. Playing the Angklung alongside many others was a highlight, creating a harmonious and peaceful sound that made me feel like a musician in an orchestra.
