1984 Still Holds Up as One of the Best Years for Movies

Clint eastwood's last great performance was 20 years ago, a new friday the 13th movie isn't happening for all the wrong reasons.

The Journey franchise began with Journey to the Centre of the Earth , and continued with its sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Both films were hugely successful, and with the introduction of Dwayne Johnson in the second film, they fast became box office successes, picked up legions of fans, and looked on track to follow the classic film franchise formula for continued success.

Shortly after the success of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , a following sequel was announced which promised to be even bigger and better: Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon . Unfortunately, this project was paused shortly after, and then the announcement came that the film was no more . Here’s everything we know about the sequel and why it didn't happen.

Script Difficulties and Actor Commitment Issues

One of the first problems that was encountered by the Journey franchise was the curse of a lack of script for developing the project further. Johnson revealed in 2018 that the lack of a solid script was a large reason for his not being involved in the project. There was initial speculation that writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes would be tied to the film. This could have been exciting, given their previous work in films such as The Conjuring and House of Wax , representing the possibility for the script to change to be more mature or have horror themes which were not fully explored before. This creative direction was eventually scrapped for reasons unclear. Naturally, difficulties such as these meant that actors were hesitant to be tied to the project since it didn’t seem to be fully coming into fruition. It would have been interesting, however, to see what direction the Hayes Brothers could have taken the film in.

Dwayne Johnson’s Popularity Surged

Dwayne Johnson first gained huge popularity under his stage name The Rock. He initially appeared as a wrestler for WWE, where he wrestled for eight years and became one of the most famous wrestlers to ever be on the show, developing a huge following and growing in popularity year after year. This led to a continued career in film, beginning in 2002 when he starred in The Scorpion King , which then led to further success, allowing him to leave WWE altogether and act in Hollywood full time.

When Johnson joined the franchise in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , his career was only just beginning to gain the momentum that it has today. The years following Journey 2 saw Johnson take on several huge projects, like Fast & Furious 6 , Hercules , San Andreas , and Moana , to name a few. It’s clear that his schedule was becoming more and more packed, and without a script for Journey 3 , the possibility of a sequel was put to the back of his to-do list. Despite director Peyton frequently stating in interviews that he did not have any plans for the franchise to end, the lack of Johnson’s presence would have likely thrown a wrench in the plans. Johnson eventually confirmed on Twitter that he would not be returning, which present the ultimate challenge for the film since he was an integral part to its success and general appeal. While responding to his fans, the actor stated that the reason behind the cancelation was the script and his busy work schedule.

There’s an Online Petition for the Project to be Resurrected

Understandably, fans were not happy with the decision for the film to be shelved, and Johnson’s announcement that he would not be returning in 2018 caused even further disappointment. The original director for the film was supposed to be Brad Peyton, and after having huge successes like San Andreas and Rampage , we can understand why fans were sad about missing out on this opportunity. In today’s world, fans have access to the internet and can be very vocal about their upset for these kinds of things. This has resulted in the setting up of a petition, which call for Dwayne Johnson and Brad Peyton to be attached to the film again, which you can find here .

Dwayne Johnson has finally confirmed that there will not be a follow-up to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , and that the intended plot would have been based on another Jules Verne inspired story. The Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle star directly responded to a fan of the franchise on social media, and he categorically stated that he was no longer involved with any plans for future installments. This would seem to indicate that the surprisingly successful Journey 2 will be the last entry and that the previously announced Journey 3 is now officially canned.

Journey to the Center of the Earth was a modern reinterpretation of the Verne classic novel that debuted in theaters in 2008. It starred Brendan Fraser ( The Mummy ) and was the directorial debut for visual effects maestro Eric Brevig ( The Maze Runner ). Despite some mixed reviews, the family adventure made a worldwide gross of $241m from a $60m budget. Due to scheduling conflicts, Fraser was unable to return for a sequel, and so Johnson took the lead role for Journey 2 . Released in 2012, the sequel maintained the Verne connection by being loosely based on his novel The Mysterious Island , and also referencing the books as part of the plot. A surprising box office hit, the film garnered a global gross of $335m from a budget of $79m. It confirmed Johnson's stature as a leading actor and grew his reputation as a 'franchise-saver'. Not unexpectedly,  there was soon talk of another sequel .

However six years later and with no definitive news on Journey 3 , one fan of the franchise asked Johnson on Twitter if we would ever see the film. Ever approachable and responsive to his fans, the ex-wrestler responded with the following reply;

The response isn't entirely unexpected. Due to the success of Journey 2 , Johnson was soon tapped to be in talks for a third film and his second as the lead. It was then announced in 2014 that there would in fact be two follow-ups, with Journey 3 and Journey 4 being filmed back-to-back . The director would be Brad Peyton, who shot Journey 2 , with The Rock returning for both stories. However, following that report the franchise never strayed from the development stages and no further news was released. Peyton and Johnson have since built up a good working partnership with such films as San Andreas , and the upcoming Rampage . But it certainly looks like Journey films are no longer on the table.

Of course it doesn't mean that a version of the film would not appear in the future with a different lead and direction, but that seems highly unlikely. Johnson's reference to From the Earth to the Moon certainly fits in with the final scene of Journey 2 , and maybe that just couldn't be satisfactorily worked into a new film. It would have been interesting to see what Verne reference a fourth film may have held. In the meantime, fans of The Rock have plenty of upcoming projects to look forward to, even if Journey 3 isn't one of them.

Given that he’s one of the busiest actors in Hollywood, it’s inevitable that some of Dwayne Johnson’s planned projects are set to fall by the wayside, and it seems that’s the case with the third instalment of the Journey franchise, with The Rock revealing on Twitter that Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon is no longer moving forward.

Johnson starred in 2012’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , a sequel to the Brendan Fraser-headlined Journey to the Center of the Earth , which pulled in $335 million leading to talk of two further sequels.

Despite this project being axed, Johnson – who can currently be seen in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle – still has a host of films on his upcoming slate including Rampage , Skyscraper , Fighting with My Family , Jungle Cruise and Black Adam , as well as a rumoured role as the DC antihero in Suicide Squad 2 .

In the world of entertainment, there is perhaps no more fabled tale of rise, fall, redemption and comeback than that of inmate turned ‘Iron Man,’ Mr. Robert Downey Jr.

The prodigal son of writer, director and actor Robert Downey Sr. , the younger Downey made his acting debut at age five, playing the ironic role of a sick puppy n his father’s film “Pound.”

Downey Jr. found early success as an adjunct member of the Brat Pack, starring in the nihilist classic “Less Than Zero.” He earned his first Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in the eponymous film.

Downey has famously, and publicly, battled substance abuse, spending much of the 90’s and early aughts in and out of treatment centers and correctional facilities before finally getting sober in 2003 and making the unlikely leap from getting high to becoming the highest paid actor in Hollywood.

Downey has three kids , son Indio 29, with ex-wife Deborah Falconer and son Exton , 11, and  daughter Avri , 8, with wife Susan Levin who he wed in 2005.

Downey Jr.’s latest role is in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” Premiering July 21, the biopic stars Cillian Murphy in the titular role of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the complex communist who invented the atomic bomb. Downey plays antagonist Lewis Strauss, the former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.

In celebration of summer cinema and the long strange trip of Robert Downey, we’re taking a look at the stradust that settles in the ‘Iron Man’s’ birth chart. Read on to learn more.

Cardinal fire starter

Robert Downey Jr. was born on April 4, 1965 in New York mothertruckin’ City making our man an impulsive Aries sun, Mercury and Venus with a luxury loving Taurus moon .

The birth time listed online is dicey so we’ll be operating without knowledge of his rising sign or house placements.

In the words of astrologer Elise Wells of Planet Poetica , the moon is the engine, the sun is the fuel and the vocation is the path we are working towards/on.

In the case of Downey we have at on our hands “a pleasure-lover vehicle burning individualist/warrior fuel, doing the job of sacred work in pagan theatre.” 

We can see Downey’s sun and moon working together in his approach to life and art, an ethos of “ Never let a good crisis go to waste,” apropos as Aries folk are oxygenated by challenge and Taurus is concerned with ROI.

Downey’s Taurus moon also serves to explain his fixed determination, evident in his recovery, long term relationships and dedication to playing a character like Tony Stark for the better part of a decade for one of the largest paydays in history.

Sarah Jessica Parker , who dated Downey from 1984-1991 recalled feeling “angry and embarrassed” throughout the course of their relationship.

TBH folks, those twin emotions are the hallmark of dating an Aries, (prove me wrong). Parker went on to partially redeem their romance calling it, “really adventurous, important,” bringing attention to the highest expressions of this fearless fire sign which never fails to keep it fresh and borderline dangerous.

A Taurus moon is a natural born pleasure seeker but gone unchecked or off the f—ing rails that pursuit can turn perverse; no good when you consider how committal a Taurus moon can be.

If they are committing to the k-hole, the gun in the glove box, the coke binge and/or the inexplicable Wonder Woman costume folks, they are doing so with gusto.

On the upswing, when a Taurus moon learns to rebrand pleasure and dig into the rich earth of a stabilizing relationship they all but bloom as Downey continues to prove.

Mercury in Aries = bad clown

Downey’s, Mercury , the planet of the mind and mouth, is in the fast paced, actions oriented sign of Aries. This placement explains his quick wit and rapid fire delivery.

True to form and to Mercury, “The New York Times, ” recently characterized Downey as a “rollicking and digressive talker.”

In the same article, Downey all but outs his Mercury sign, telling NYT, “I had other characters in other things where I put on a mask, and in putting on the mask, I am free to subject the screen to my unconscious dialogue, which I find hilarious, engaging and wrought with bad-clown energy.” 

Mercury in Aries is bad clown energy. It is not shy, it is not subtle, consider Downey’s words to a judge at a 1999 sentencing for drug charges ,”It’s like I have a shotgun in my mouth, and I’ve got my finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gun metal.”

Aries: A scorched-earth hero’s journey

Ruled by planet Mars, named for the god of war, Aries represents the warrior archetype and for his part, Downey’s hero’s journey has been marked by descent and regeneration.

Through his addictions he waged war on himself, physically and psychically and in his recovery cut a rough path to wholeness. In the process of building himself back, Downey resurrected his career, going from blacklisted to bankable in the span of a few years.

More importantly, and true to the action hero qualities of his Aries placements, Downey’s struggles have served as a hopeful lighthouse for others making their way through the same muck and mire.

Actor Wes Bentley credits Downey with saving his life , “I was in the deepest throes of my addiction and in the worst place and at death’s door, I guess, or at risk of it and I saw him be so bold and brave and open and it saved me.”

An oft unsung merit of the Aries archetype is service and Downey’s rescue yourself, rescue others, burn as a beacon of what can be energy is cardinal fire at its purest and most powerful.

Downey turned 58 this year and ushered in his second Saturn return . Downey celebrated his latest trip around the sun with an Instagram video montage that featured images of his family and a parting picture of himself on an inflatable pony alongside the following wish, “After all these blessings I must simply say I hope I NEVER grow up one day.”

The French philosopher Roger Garaudy posited that while most people believe a person is born young, ages and dies, acquiring youth is in fact a life long process of challenge and change.

The youth Garaudy speaks to and that Downey embodies, is a spirit that continues to open itself to change and possibility, that refuses to stagnate or surrender. In essence. we should strive towards youth as we age; to be more creative, curious and compassionate in the winter of our lives than in the spring.

Apropos of this, Aries is the first born, cardinal kid of the zodiac, a pure and perennial Pan type that refuses to slow down but can, in their highest expression and in the case of Downey, direct their fire purposefully and powerfully.
