For those of us who love the quiet beauty and serenity that a blanket of snow offers, this is a wonderful moment. Some of us will accept this as the time to retreat before a warm fire with a cup of hot cocoa in hand to gaze at the stunning snow covered trees and snowcapped mountains. Others will bundle up and head out to snowshoe, downhill ski, cross country ski, snowmobile, dogsled, ice skate, or simply walk along snow packed paths. So, where are the best snowy winter wonderlands to visit in the USA? And which of the winter months – December, January, February, or even March – are the best times to visit? Sugarbush, Vermont

One of the best places to visit in the USA for a snowy winter wonderland is the lovely  Sugarbush Resort  in Warren, Vermont. This beautiful setting in the green mountains, not far from Killington, is very special. It is family-friendly, offers a warm atmosphere, and has fantastic Northeast skiing. It is an ideal snowy winter trip, as it is located in the Mad River Valley, near farmlands and country stores. 

Some of the best things to do at Sugarbush include skiing and snowboarding, and enjoying the apres-ski scene in the Rumbles Bistro and Bar. In addition, consider snowmobiling, or taking a CAT cabin ride to the top of the mountain to watch the sunrise or set over Lincoln peak. 

If you aren’t a skier, you can enjoy snowshoeing or cross country skiing on the mountain. Alternatively, enjoy any of the non-snowy activities like the fitness center, heated outdoor pool (open even in the snow), the family adventure center, hot tubs, or the Mad Scientist Escape Room. Or just pop your feet up by the fire in your condo or favorite lounge, and watch the snow fall outside. 

There is also dog sledding nearby if you are up for a real adventure.

A favorite thing to do is dine at the Original Flatbread Pizza Company at the Lareau Family Farms, a few minutes from Sugarbush. It is well worth standing in line for a table as it is a cozy wood-fired pizza restaurant. It offers some of the freshest ingredients and the most delicious pizza outside of Italy. 

In fact, Vermonters take all their food seriously and often use locally sourced ingredients. You will want to be sure to enjoy a delicious Vermont breakfast with local maple syrup while visiting Sugarbush.  

For a spectacular snowy winter wonderland, be sure to add Sugarbush, Vermont to your winter bucket list!

Snowfall can begin as early as November and last until late March or even April. However, typically December through early March is when you will find the best snow. Expect around 10 inches of snowfall per month on average. Temperatures can range at this time of year from 35 degrees Fahrenheit to below zero, especially in January and February. 

Best Way To Reach Destination

The best way to get to Sugarbush is by car. It is about one hour from Burlington International Airport, 3.5 hours from Boston ‘s Logan International Airport, and about 2-3 hours from Montreal’s International Airport.

Lake Placid, New York

Lake Placid is a wonderful little alpine town in the Adirondack mountains of  New York State. With it receiving over 100 inches of snow each year, it is one of the best holiday spots in the United States to experience a true snowy winter wonderland. Lake Placid has also hosted not just one, but two winter Olympic games, which will make your winter getaway that much more memorable.

One of the best things to do in Lake Placid in the winter is to go ice skating on the Olympic speed skating oval which was actually used in both Olympics. Located right in town and walkable from everything, this outdoor rink is perfect for both experienced skaters and true beginners. With its large size, it offers plenty of room for spreading out. 

Lake Placid’s downtown is centered around the beautiful Mirror Lake, and in the winter, you can go tobogganing across the lake. The Lake Placid Toboggan Chute is a slide that’s about 30-feet high. It spits you out onto the frozen lake for a really fun and exhilarating ride for both kids and adults. 

Be sure to stroll around the downtown shops as well. Pick up some hot cocoa and freshly popped popcorn at the Adirondack Popcorn Co. to snack on while visiting all the beautiful boutiques.

If you’re looking for a great dining option, visit Salt of the Earth Bistro for elevated comfort food classics such as stews and burgers that are perfect for cold winter nights.

Temperatures in Lake Placid throughout the winter season average about 26-30° F, although they are usually colder in January and February. Snow often begins as early as October and will stick around until the end of April. However, the best months to visit Lake Placid for a snowy winter getaway will be December, January and February.

To get to Lake Placid, you can fly into either Albany International Airport in NY, or Burlington International Airport in VT, both of which are a 2-hour drive away. From the airport, you’ll need to rent a car and drive to Lake Placid. 

Samantha says, “An amazing hotel is the Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa . It is located downtown and walkable to all the shops and restaurants. For a cozy night, arrange a massage at the spa, followed by dinner at the inn.”

Mammoth Lakes, California

While  Mammoth Lakes  is a year-round vacation destination, it really comes into its own during the winter months. Located in the Eastern Sierra of California, Mammoth Lakes is a popular winter resort destination on the west coast for downhill skiing, snowboarding, and so much more.

Mammoth Mountain is a renowned California ski resort. It is the highest peak in California that’s serviced by a chair-lift, with varied terrain suited for all levels of skiers. You can even take ski lessons here if you are a beginner. And on a bright clear day, the views from the top of Mammoth Mountain are sensational.

If you enjoy ice skating, Mammoth Ice Rink is open from late November through February. You can also choose ice tubing, snow sledding, and snow play. Go cross-country skiing, or take a wonderful winter wonderland snowshoe hike through the evergreen forests around town.

Love snowmobiling? Mammoth Lakes offers groomed trails, but there are also thousands of acres of public lands around Mammoth Lakes that are open to snowmobiles in the winter. In addition, it’s a great place to explore off trail if you are an expert.

Outside of winter sports, Mammoth Lakes is a fabulous area to visit in the winter to enjoy the snowy landscapes of a California. It is far removed from the palm trees and beaches of its famous coast.

The Mammoth Lakes’ area is known for its many natural hot springs , perfect for cold winter days. If you enjoy landscape photography, visit Convict Lake for an especially stunning winter scene.

Between December and February, Mammoth Lakes sees average daytime temperatures in the low 40s and nighttime temperatures in the teens. While snowstorms can occur, you can also expect bright sunny days.

Snowfall in Mammoth Lakes generally starts in October, and usually lasts well beyond winter. It averages around 28″ per month in December, January and February with snowfall starting as early as October. It is also normal for there to be a light sprinkling of snow in May.

The easiest way to fly into Mammoth Lakes in the winter is to take a flight from either San Francisco or Los Angeles into the regional airport at Mammoth Lakes. You can also fly into Reno International Airport and drive down if US 395 is fully open (about 170 miles). Alternatively, you can drive up Highway 395 from points south like Los Angeles or Palm Springs.

North Conway, New Hampshire

New Hampshire in winter  is a snow-lover’s paradise, particularly the charming mountain town of North Conway. Located in the White Mountain region, North Conway is the perfect jumping off point for frosty fun ranging from skiing, to sledding, to snow tubing.

From here, you can catch a ride on the snow train through the Attitash mountains. A winter dream come true, this 90-minute train ride promises picturesque views of snowy-white trees and snow-capped mountains from the comfort of your window seat.

Alternatively, if taking the wheel is more your speed, you cannot miss the drive across the Kancamagus Highway, a picturesque byway running through the White Mountain National Forest. This is nothing like crowded freeways you may envision, but a quiet, even ethereal experience.

Surrounded by frosty pines, you’ll feel as though you’re caught inside a snow globe as you cross one of the most scenic routes in all of New England. Make sure to stop off along the way to explore the White Mountain National Forest in its prime for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, sledding, and hiking.

If you’re traveling with kids – or you’d simply relish the novelty of a child-friendly experience – head over to Ice Castles New Hampshire in North Woodstock. Open anywhere from late December to early January and running until late February to early March, this is easily one of the most popular attractions in the state. This magical venue features hundreds of thousands of icicle-based formations, an enchanted forest, and wintry horse-drawn sleigh rides.

From December to January, you can expect average highs hovering around 32°F in North Conway, with the average low temperature at a blustering 12°F. A mix of clouds and sun is pretty typical in the White Mountain Region, and you can generally expect at least partial cloudiness.

North Conway averages 77 inches of snowfall annually, including snow in both November and March. In December, the average snowfall is 14.6 inches, whereas 20.1 inches are average for January, the snowiest month of the year. February snowfall drops a bit, with an average of 17.6 inches.

To reach North Conway, you’ll ideally want to fly into Portland International Jetport. It’s then a drive of about one hour and 15 minutes to reach North Conway,. You’ll definitely want a car for the journey.

Elena says, “ North Conway Grand Hotel is a great accommodation option, located in the epicenter of the White Mountains.”

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming and Montana

Yellowstone National Park is not only the world’s first national park, it is also one of America’s most stunning places. And it gets a LOT of snow, making  visiting Yellowstone in winter  a completely different experience from a summer trip.

Most of the National Park is closed to regular vehicular traffic in winter, with just the North Entrance at Gardener open. The rest of the Park can only be visited by traveling over the snow.

If you want to drive your regular vehicle, you can enter at the North Entrance and see Mammoth Hot Springs, which are especially lovely surrounded by snow. You can also take a dip in the heated Boiling River and drive the Lamar Valley where you may get to see snow-covered bison. 

However, to see the rest of Yellowstone National Park, you will need to travel by snowmobile or snow coach. Daily snowmobile tours go to Old Faithful or the Canyon/ Yellowstone Falls area. Most tours leave from the West Entrance, but a couple of operators go from other entrances including the north, south and east gates.

A more comfortable alternative is to take a daily snow coach to the same areas. Again, most go from the West Entrance, but one operator has tours from the south entrance. 

It’s also possible to stay in those two areas, taking a snow coach there and back.

Seeing the incredible Yellowstone Falls mostly frozen is incredibly dramatic. And walking around the geysers and hot springs near Old Faithful all surrounded by the snow is a truly magical experience, making Yellowstone one of the best snowy winter vacation destinations in America. 

It can start snowing as early as September; however, winter really starts in November when most of the roads close to cars. The main winter season is in full flight from mid-December to mid-March, though it snows well into April and even May. 

The average winter temperatures/monthly snowfalls are:  

December : Average temperature 26°F. Average snowfall 18.55 inches  

January : Average temperature 27°F. Average snowfall 20.05 inches  

February : Average temperature 31°F.  Average snowfall 14.44 inches  

The nearest international airport with easy winter access is Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport. If you plan to enter via the north entrance, visit Mammoth Hot Spring, drive the Lamar Valley and possibly take a tour from there. It’s a 1.5-hour drive to Gardiner and the National Park’s North Entrance. 

The main access point for most tours is West Yellowstone. While there is a tiny regional airport there, it’s closed over winter. From Bozeman Airport, it’s a 2-hour and 15-minute drive to West Yellowstone.  

James says, “There are four options to stay inside Yellowstone National Park, but several others in the gateway towns. For the north entrance, the most comfortable option is the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel & Cabins . However, for the full winter experience, it’s hard to beat the Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Cabins, which you can only reach by snow coach or snowmobile.”

Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota

Winter visitors to the Twin Cities are always warned about Minnesota’s famous cold temperatures and severe wind chills. However, they are rarely handed a list of the amazing things to do in Minneapolis and Saint Paul in the winter. If they did, they would soon discover it is one of the best cities to visit in winter in the USA.

There is winter in the Twin Cities, to be sure. So, bring a good coat and boots. If you have any at hand, pack your cross-country skis, ice skates, or snowshoes and dig into the winter fun. If you don’t, you can easily find rental equipment in the city. Things for couples to do in Minneapolis

It’s not strictly a winter activity, but you may want to start at the beginning, at the Mill City Museum. Here you will learn about how and why Minneapolis was established on the upper reaches of the Mississippi River. In the ruins of one of the old mill buildings, exhibits highlight the early grain milling and shipping history of Minneapolis. Mill City Museum also offers worthwhile views of the river and the old Stone Arch Bridge, wonderful romantic things for couples to do in Minneapolis .

Minneapolis’ Lake of the Isles features a skating rink and warming house. All Minneapolis parks with rinks offer free loaner skates on a first-come, first-served basis. Theodore Wirth Park provides even more winter equipment rentals and groomed trails for cross-country skiing.

If you happen to be in town late January to early February, don’t miss the City of Lakes Loppet Winter Festival. Tens of thousands of people take to the lakes and parks for cross-country skiing and other events. Ski, walk, bring your dog, pull a sled of hot chocolate and kids, and see ice sculptures, music, and candlelit trails.

Sometimes the best medicine in winter is the sight of greenery and the scent of flowers. In Saint Paul, The Como Park Conservatory is a popular spot to revitalize the winter weary with a variety of indoor gardens, rare floral species, and free concerts.

There is usually snow on the ground from November through March, with an average of 4″ of snow each month. The average high temperatures are 27, 22, and 26 degrees (F) in December, January, and February, respectively. The lows? You don’t want to know.

To get to the Twin Cities, it’s easy to fly into Minneapolis/Saint Paul International Airport (MSP.) From the airport, there are fast light rail connections to both downtowns. There are also the usual ride services, of course.

Tom says, “In downtown Minneapolis, we like the AC Marriott . If you’re planning on staying in downtown Saint Paul, treat yourself to the iconic Saint Paul Hotel.”

Acadia National Park, Maine

Winter outdoor enthusiasts are often in search of the ultimate winter getaways where heavy blankets of snow cover cities and landscapes as far as the eye can see. This makes it easy to see why crowds of tourists flock to the east coast mountains of New England, particularly Maine’s stunning Mt. Desert Island and the famed Acadia National Park.

If you’re looking for one of the best national parks to visit in the USA for a snowy winter wonderland, look no further. With endless winter activities and nearly guaranteed snow sightings from November through March, Acadia National Park is a winter lover’s dream vacation!

Skiing in Acadia is particularly fun owing to the Park’s isolated location surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. The rarity of skiing with views of the ocean is a beautiful thing that guests get to appreciate during their winter visit to Acadia National Park. 

Whether you’re visiting on a  family trip from Canada  or a romantic couple’s getaway, Acadia National Park is an amazing winter destination to consider.

From December through February, visitors are likely to experience snowfall ranging between a few inches per day and upwards of 1-2 feet per major snowstorm. With a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures averaging in the 20s Fahrenheit, this makes for wonderful conditions for sledding, snowball fights, skiing down Cadillac Mountain, and many other fun activities. Just be sure to pack plenty of warm layers!

If you want to partake in the winter fun, consider flying into either the Boston International Airport or the Portland International Jetport. From there, you’ll need to rent a car and drive the remaining distance to Mt. Desert Island (ranges between 3-4.5 hours, respectively).

Leavenworth, Washington

Leavenworth, between Seattle and Spokane in the Cascade mountain range on the west coast of America, is one of the best snowy winter wonderlands in the United States (although it will make you feel like you’ve hopped on a plane to Germany)! The town is a Bavarian village that features alpine-looking buildings complete with wooden balconies and cute window shutters.

Over the holiday season, there’s a great Christmas market. You can also ski, sled, go for snowy hikes and refuel on bratwurst and sauerkraut and beer.

One of the best things to do in Leavenworth during a winter visit is to go to the Leavenworth Christmas market which runs throughout December. There’s carolling, a market with unique gifts and sleigh rides too!

If you’re visiting outside of Christmas, then skiing at Leavenworth is a must-do activity to enjoy the snow. Leavenworth Ski Hill is small with only a couple of runs and two rope tows to get you to the top. However, it’s a fun half-day activity and great for beginner skiers or with children. Plus, the ski area is quiet and you’ll have amazing views of the Cascade mountains surrounding you.

For keen skiers, there’s also Mission Ridge and Stevens Pass Mountain Resort all within easy driving distance of Leavenworth.

Over winter, the average temperatures in Leavenworth range between 18F – 33F. There will be reliable snow from December to April while some years you can expect snow as early as September and as late as May.

It snows between 10-16 days a month on average between December to February with most snow typically falling in January to around 17″ of snow.

The closest international airport is Seattle, just over 2 hours drive. Alternatively, you can take Amtrak 8 which goes from Seattle to Chicago with a stop at Leavenworth.

Breckenridge, Colorado

Exploring Breckenridge’s historic Main Street is a must. With quintessential Wild West facades and over 200 shops along the street, you’ll find local treasures and feel transported back in time. After shopping through the many boutiques, relax at a brewery or winery like Breckenridge Distillery.

Of course, the primary appeal of Breckenridge is the Breckenridge Ski Resort! The resort is usually open for skiing between mid-November and mid-May, but the best conditions are between December and April. Ski or snowboard along 187 trails in the resort’s complex, and get your heart racing on the tallest chairlift in North America.

Another snowy activity that is sure to delight the family is good old-fashioned dog sledding! Good Times Adventures is one of the recommended outfitters for a dog sled adventure through the mountains around Breckenridge. 

Temperatures usually stay between 20 and 30 degrees Fahrenheit in December, January, and February. Snow usually begins in October, and continues through the end of May, totalling an average of 366 inches every year. 

The closest airport to Breckenridge is Eagle/Vail Regional Airport, but this small airport does not have many flights. Most visitors will fly or take a bus to Denver , then drive about 80 miles (90 minutes) from the Denver International Airport to Breckenridge.

Park City, Utah

With an average of 300 to 400 inches of snow each winter, Park City Utah would be an amazing winter vacation for those looking for snow and outdoor winter sports in the United States. Park City is home to two world-class ski resorts, but even if you don’t ski, there are tons of fun  Park City winter activities  to explore. Best of all, Park City has relatively mild winter temperatures.

Besides skiing, snowmobiling and dog sledding are some of the most popular things to do in winter. There are dozens of snowmobile tours in the area, offering guided two-hour tours of the nearby mountains.

Dog sledding is also a fun activity, especially if you have younger kids who can’t go snowmobiling. Park City is also one of few places where you can ride on an Olympic bobsled track, as the city hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics. 

For more active winter endeavors, there is cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating. Even just a stroll down Main Street is like walking through a fairytale winter wonderland. The former mining town has retained much of its 19th-century charm with colorful wooden buildings filled with unique boutiques and fabulous restaurants. 

Winter activities typically start just before Christmas and the holiday season. While the ski season lasts into April, off-slope activities typically start winding down at the end of March as the snow softens. February is probably the best month to visit, but it’s also very busy around the President’s Day holiday weekend. Explore some of the best winter camping if it’s difficult to find accommodation.

It’s usually not much colder than 20F so you can really enjoy the snow without freezing. 

Park City is just 30 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport, so it’s very easy to get there in the winter. Access from the airport is on a major interstate, so they do a great job of clearing the road after a big snowstorm. In addition, there aren’t any scary mountain roads to drive.

Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage is far and away the best snowy winter wonderland in Northern USA. Alaska has countless winter adventures and stunning scenery. The good news, though, is that you can see and do everything you would ever imagine in a winter wonderland in and around Anchorage! 

Whether you’re looking for snowy landscapes, winter wildlife, the Northern Lights or snow adventures, Anchorage offers it all. In winter, there is clear star-filled night skies with a chance to photograph the Northern Lights ! 

But, that’s only if you are not exhausted from a day adventuring in the nearby Chugach Mountains. Some of my favorite activities are found in Chugach National Forest where you can hike, fat bike, or ski to Portage, Skookum, and Spencer Glaciers.

Chugach State Park and Chugach National Forest are at the fringes of Anchorage and give you access to untold winter wonders. You’ll find frozen waterfalls driving south on the Seward Highway and watch sea ice roll with the tide in the Turnagain Arm.

These destinations are full of countless snow filled trails and Anchorage itself has many parks with groomed ski trails too. Don’t forget to support local Alaskan businesses and visit Kincaid and Hillside for free groomed ski trails. In addition, you can rent any missing winter gear from Alaska Mountaineering & Hiking.  

The mountains start getting “termination dust” (the first snowfall on the mountains) as early as September and snow begins to arrive in Anchorage by November. 

In a light snow year, we have incredible wild ice skating on the lakes and sloughs nearby. Check out Rabbit Slough in the Palmer Hay Flats for world class wild ice skating.

Once the snow starts coming, it just stays and builds on itself. Most years you can have a few feet of snow in your backyard and it lasts until March or later. Some years, you can ski in Turnagain Pass in late May and backcountry ski in June.

Winter temperatures in Anchorage can range from the mid twenties & thirties to minus teens. It’s not usually negatives but the weather can vary greatly from week to week. We often have temperatures in the single digits and teens. It’s not uncommon to see a -10F late in the middle of the night while out hunting for the Aurora Borealis or with a nasty wind chill. 

Wearing layers is the key to enjoying winter in Alaska. When you’re skiing or hiking on the trails, you’re working up a sweat and happy for the chilly air!

Ted Stevens Airport is a 15 minute drive from just about anywhere in Anchorage and is a great airport.  You can be checking into Alyeska Resort for the best downhill skiing in the world in less than an hour.

Sun Valley, Idaho

One of the best winter vacations in the United States to play snow sports is  Sun Valley, Idaho . It is a small resort town in the beautiful Idaho mountains. 

The town is mostly known for its ski areas at the Sun Valley Resort – Bald Mountain and Dollar Mountain. Bald Mountain has more than 3,000 feet of fall line skiing and is one of the best ski experiences in the country. There are great beginner hills as well as challenging runs for more experienced skiers.

You can also go backcountry skiing with Sun Valley Heli Ski. The mountains have beautiful views of the Idaho mountains and the Sun Valley Lodge. 

In the winter months, it is also a great place to go snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Sun Valley has about 200 kilometers of groomed trails. In addition, there are beautiful mountain views in this area. 

Another fun thing to do is explore the town of Ketchum. There are lots of cute boutiques, restaurants, and souvenir shops.

The snow in Sun Valley starts falling around the end of October and lasts through the end of April. Through the deep winter months from December through March, the area gets about 5-8 inches of snow per week. During November and April, the area gets about 2-3 inches of snow per week.

The closest international airport is in Salt Lake City. There is a small airport in Ketchum and the nearby Boise airport is another option. Salt Lake City is about 5 hours from Sun Valley and Boise is about 2.5 hours away.

Boyne Falls, Michigan

Boyne Falls, Michigan is a classic snowy winter destination in America. From January to mid-March, the area is covered with several feet of beautiful snow.

Boyne Mountain is the perfect place to start to enjoy your winter adventure. With 60 runs over 415 acres, Boyne Mountain is a great spot to enjoy downhill skiing or snowboarding. The runs range from easy greens to challenging double black diamonds, with a few terrain parks thrown in. There is something for every kind of skier in your group.

Boyne Mountain also boasts snowshoeing (often attached to other fun events such as snowshoeing to dinner). In addition, it offers fat-tire bikes, and even a zip-line course across the mountain. There is also a small ice-skating rink that is free to mountain guests.

Once you tire of the snow sports at Boyne Mountain, head into the village to shop or to nearby Boyne City. Enjoy checking out the shops full of vacation treasures and then, indulge in a delicious meal at a local restaurant. End your shopping adventure with a decadent chocolate treat from the local Kilwin’s store. 

Don’t miss out on one of the best winter destinations in the USA. Between the beautiful winter scenery, the marvelous nearby shopping and dining, and the exciting snow sports available, it’s a winter getaway with snow that your family won’t soon forget.

With average temperatures in the low thirties from December to early March, snow is a guarantee! The area averages 140 inches each year. Although there might be a light snow or two in November, if enough snow for winter sports is what you desire, mid-January to mid-March is your best time to visit.

February and early March are particularly lovely as there are many bluebird ski days. On the other hand, December and January tend to be a bit less sunny. 

Boyne Falls is in Northern Michigan, so the closest airport is Traverse City, Michigan, about an hour and twenty-minute drive.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

While Jackson Hole attracts thousands of visitors each summer who come to see Grand Teton National Park, the wintertime is also a perfect time to visit this Wyoming gem.

Boasting 2,500 acres of terrain and an average of 526 inches of snow each winter, Jackson Hole Mountain resort is a skier’s dream. Spend your days on the slopes and mingle with locals and other travelers during apres-ski happy hour. 

For those who aren’t into skiing and snowboarding, there are lots of other winter activities in the Jackson Hole area as well as ways to stay cozy during the cold months.

If you’re looking for a winter adventure, strap on a pair of cross country skis or snowshoes and hit the trails. Taggart Lake is one of the  best hikes in Grand Tetons  during the summertime, and come winter, it makes an excellent snowshoe adventure. If you don’t have your own snowshoes, there are several outdoor shops in town that have rentals.

In addition to snowshoeing, there are dogsled tours, snowmobiling, tubing, and sleigh rides, all of which would be memorable winter activities.

Once you’ve had your fill of outdoor fun, there’s plenty to do indoors. Wander one of the town’s 25 art galleries, book a spa treatment, or splurge on an unforgettable meal. 

The temperatures hover around freezing during the winter months, so be sure to dress in lots of warm layers if you’re spending the day outside.

Durango, Colorado

Durango is a super cute Old West style town in the Colorado mountains, close to the Purgatory mountain ski trails. Despite the ominous name, this resort is one of the best off-the-beaten track ski destinations in America. And with over 100 trails, you won’t get bored.

Hesperus Ski Area, and Chapman Hill ski resorts are also fantastic and within a half hour drive from Durango. 

As Durango is an old mining town, the railroad is a big part of its heritage. You can experience a piece of that history with a scenic ride on the Historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

While you can’t travel all the way in winter to the mining town of Silverton, the train trip does take you through the spectacular Cascade Canyon and San Juan Forest. 

While Durango has plenty of clear and sunny winter days, the temperature does drop, averaging between 10 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Snowfall is also common with an annual average of around 71 inches. Snow removal is managed well within the town and does not limit your ability to get around.

The closest international airport to Durango is Albuquerque, New Mexico, just under a 4 hour drive. However, the Denver airport is a larger hub with more international flights. It is in Colorado, albeit a 6-7 hour drive to Durango.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Winter in Salt Lake City brings brisk temperatures and heavily coated snowy peaks that dazzle this Utah capital. It is home to multiple world-renowned ski resorts and plenty of outdoor sightseeing and city fun. Salt Lake City is a special home base to explore one of the best snowy winter wonderlands in the USA.

Park City, Snowbird, Brighton, Alta, Solitude, Snowbasin, and the list of famous ski resorts doesn’t end there. Hit all the slopes as most of them are within an hour’s drive from downtown. Non-skiers can also partake in winter activities such as outdoor ice skating, snowshoeing, or snow tubing. 

Aside from a chilly night hike to see the best view of Salt Lake City at Ensign Peak, you shouldn’t miss Fifth Water Hot Springs near Spanish Fork. There’s nothing like a 3.5 miles’ one-way hike slipping on ice and snow to be awarded cascading blue and emerald pools inviting you in for a heart-warming dip. 

Expect winters in Salt Lake City to bring cold temperatures and snowy conditions. The average highs for the winter months hover around 40F degrees and lows bottoming out at 25F degrees.

Average snowfall is 3 inches in each of December, January and February, more in the mountains. There is little to no snowfall in November or March.

Heavy blizzards do hit this southwestern capital multiple times every winter. Daily weather can rapidly change, so it is best to prepare for any forecast turns. 

Whether you’re  planning a southwest USA road trip  or flying, Salt Lake City’s roads are easy to navigate with its numbered grid system. The best airport is Salt Lake City International Airport, only a 10 minute drive from the heart of downtown.

Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada

Lake Tahoe is a charming lake on the west coast of the United States, straddling the border between the states of California and Nevada. This spot is equally lovely in the summers months as well as wintertime.

If you visit  Lake Tahoe in summer , you can enjoy the many beaches with its crystal clear blue waters. However, Lake Tahoe makes for an incredible cold weather vacation in the United States with many cool things to do like snowmobiling, sledding, skiing, and ice skating.

Emerald Bay is the best place to catch amazing views of the snowy surroundings. Next, make a stop near Taylor Creek Visitor Center. The whole area surrounding it is a wonderful place to build your snowman and have snowball fights. If you like to explore a bit on foot, don’t forget to hike over to Lower Eagle Falls.

The most fun thing to do at Lake Tahoe apart from snow play is riding the Heavenly Gondola. The Gondola ride takes you over a frozen Lake Tahoe. Below, you can see the pine forest covered in snow and brave skiers sliding down the hills. The views are amazing.

Everything is just magical at Lake Tahoe in the winter months. The average temperature from December to February has highs around 45 degree Fahrenheit and lows about 20 degree Fahrenheit. The sky is mostly cloudy and snowfall is expected about half the time. On average, 70 inches of snow is common from December to February. Usually, snow starts to fall in mid November and lasts till early April.

Reno-Tahoe Airport is the closest international airport to Lake Tahoe. It takes about an hour to drive to Lake Tahoe.

Whitefish, Montana

People generally associate northwest Montana with hiking through Glacier National Park in the summer or being an unforgiving frozen tundra. However, there is, in fact, a middle ground. Less than 30 miles from the Park entrance, the small but mighty town of Whitefish offers year-round recreation. It is particularly spectacular American winter destination.

Skiing and snowboarding at Whitefish Mountain Resort are popular activities, and there’s even a free shuttle that runs from downtown up the mountain.

If you’d prefer to explore around town, several hiking trails run just outside of and through Whitefish and can be explored with snowshoes, cross-country skis, or on a fat tire bike. 

When you want a break from spending time outdoors, Whitefish has a surprisingly vibrant downtown for such a small town. There are several local breweries and distilleries. Create your own tour and hop around to a few (Bonsai Brewing Project and Spotted Bear Spirits are standouts).

Whitefish’s restaurant and shopping scenes are also impressive. You can easily spend several hours strolling Main Street. You can pop in and out of shops and stop for a cocktail, coffee, or quick bite when the mood strikes. Best of all, downtown is framed by the mountains in the most picture-perfect setting!

If you’re planning to visit Whitefish in the winter, daily average temperatures hover in the 30s and often dip into the teens at night, with the occasional single digit. It snows regularly from October through May, with the snowiest months being December and January. Each of those months will get about seven inches on average. The mountains get substantially more at higher elevations.

You’ll want to fly into Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell, just 15 minutes from downtown, and you’ll definitely want to rent a car to explore.

These all highlight the area’s spectacular scenery. They allow you to really immerse yourself in the uniqueness of northwest Montana.”

Mount Rainier, Washington

Mount Rainier National Park, in Washington state, is one of the snowiest places in the United States come winter. In fact, on average, parts of the National Park can receive 53 feet of snowfall per year!

There’s plenty of ways to enjoy the snow on the tallest mountain in the Cascades. For example, take any of the myriad of snowshoeing trails that you can use to explore Rainier’s pine tree covered wonderland.

Try your hand at snowshoeing parts of the Skyline Trail , one of the most famous hikes in the National Park. You can get up close and personal with Mount Rainier and drink in the fantastic vistas of the surrounding mountain peaks.

Next to this trailhead, you’ll find the park’s only “snowplay” area, where kids (and kids at heart!) can zoom down the hill in a sled or inner tube. 

Alternatively, you can plan a backcountry retreat, like making the 4.4 mile cross-country skiing trek to the Copper Creek Hut. There you can cozy up to a wood-burning fireplace and enjoy the spectacular alpine views.

Given its soaring elevation, Rainier tends to get pretty chilly throughout the winter months, with cloudy skies and highs in the mid-20s and lows hovering just above 10 degrees. And with such frosty weather, snow stays in the park for quite a long time, usually blanketing its peaks and valleys from mid-October all the way through June.

To get to Mount Rainier, you’ll need to fly into Seattle Tacoma International Airport and drive southeast approximately two hours and 15 minutes.

Burlington, Vermont

Burlington, Vermont is a fabulous US winter escape for outdoor adventures in the snow. The progressive city is located in northwest Vermont with a beautiful lakefront on Lake Champlain. In the winter, the views across the lake to the snow-covered Adirondacks are stunning. Plus, there is nothing like watching a Burlington sunset over the lake as the sky turns riotous with color.

There are many winter outdoor activities to enjoy. The Intervale, a vast network of farm fields in the city, is groomed for  cross country skiing  in the winter. The ski trails are flat so it’s perfect for beginners.

More experienced Nordic skiers will enjoy the mixed ability terrain at nearby Catamount Outdoor Family Center or Sleepy Hollow Ski Center. Snowshoeing and winter fat biking are also popular at these centers.

Downhill skiers can hit the slopes at either Bolton Valley or Stowe ski resorts. Both offer gorgeous, snowy trails that everyone in the family can enjoy. Or you can ski at Cochran’s, the mom-and-pop ski hill that has been the training slope for past and present Olympians.

After a full day outside in the snow, stop by Lake Champlain Chocolate Factory for the best traditionally made hot chocolate you will ever taste. You can also wander along the pedestrian mall at Church Street for cute shops and delicious restaurants.

Bundle up as temperatures in Burlington in the winter hover just below freezing. The wind off the lake will make it feel even colder. Snow begins to fall in November and will even continue into early April. However, the vast majority of snowfall occurs in December, January, February and March. Expect around 8″ per month on average during these winter months. Of course, there will be much more in the alpine.

You can fly into Burlington International airport and be downtown in 5 minutes by cab.

Fairbanks, Alaska

It is impossible think about a snowy winter wonderlands in the United States without thinking about Alaska, in particular Fairbanks. 

Fairbanks has amazing things to do . It is a popular destination for the vast forests, wilderness, and abundant snowfall. But one of the highlights in Fairbanks and the reason why there are many visits at this time of the year is to chase the amazing Northern lights.

Fairbanks is one of the best places on the planet to see the aurora borealis. This is because of the low precipitation, the distance from the coast, and minimal manmade light from the low population density.  

While the temperature during winter frequently falls well below zero, and the days are short, it is during wintertime that you can also find many other ways to spend your days. From stopping into an ice museum to visiting the hot springs, skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling, or learning how to ice fish with the locals, they are all available for your US winter holidays.  

If you love the outdoors and adventure, you should also add snowmobiling to your bucket list. If you don’t have any experience, don’t worry because your guides will instruct you and provide all the instructions.

Winters are cold and dry with temperatures dipping well below freezing at night and daytime highs in the 20s. It’s not unusual to go from 25 degrees to minus 25 degrees in the same day. December, January and February are the coldest months, with November and December seeing the highest snowfall totals. 

The best way to get to Fairbanks is to fly to the Fairbanks International Airport.

Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

If you are looking for a winter escape with amazing snow sports in the Pacific Northwest, Mount Hood National Forest is one of the best places around! The area has plenty of winter activities and snowy mountain views. 

Mount Hood is a great place to experience winter. There is skiing and snow parks across the mountain. The three ski resorts include Mount Hood Skibowl, Timberline Lodge, and Mount Hood Meadows.

If you would rather snowshoe than ski, there are several great snowshoe trails in the area.  Snowshoeing to Tamanawas Falls  is one of the best winter trails that will lead you to a beautiful winter waterfall. 

Mount Hood usually starts to receive snow in late November or early December. According to the Timberline Lodge, the area averages 60 inches of snow depth in December, 74 inches in January, 117 inches in February, and 145 inches in March. The snow may even continue into April depending on the year.

In the winter, the temperature can be expected to range from the high 10s up to the low 30s (degrees Fahrenheit) with mostly cloudy days.

The Portland International Airport is the nearest airport with only a 1 to 2-hour drive to the mountain, depending on the area you are visiting. The snow may make this drive take slightly longer. In addition, you are required to carry snow chains or traction tires in the winter. 

Val says, “Easily the best place to stay on Mount Hood is the Timberline Lodge . It is a historic, near century-old, lodge with sweeping views of Mount Hood and the surrounding mountains. If you can’t stay at the lodge, there are several other hotels nearby in Government Camp.”

Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Steamboat Springs is a perfect winter escape in the United States for someone looking for a snowy wonderland. Located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado , this winter resort town gets an average of over 200 inches of snowfall per year. From November to April, there is snow on the ground attracting winter sports enthusiasts seeking the signature “Champagne Powder”.

With over 3,000 acres of ski terrain, Steamboat Springs is a mecca for skiers and snowboarders alike. The resort town also offers a variety of other winter activities such as dog sledding, ice skating, and snowmobiling.

If you are a beginner, the Howelsen Hill Ski Area is one of the most affordable places you could learn to ski, while the Steamboat Resort offers a wider variety of slopes for any experience level.

And for the sore muscles after all the fun outdoor activities, there are 2 hot springs in the area to help you relax and recover. It is also hard to go far without finding a hot tub whether you are staying at one of the hotels or vacation rentals.

In the winter in Steamboat Springs, you can expect temperatures of 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, dipping into the single digits at night. However, the town experiences over 300 sunny days per year so don’t forget your sunscreen!

To arrive in Steamboat Springs, the closest airport is located in Hayden, Colorado which is about 40 minutes away by car. If you need an international airport, Denver International Airport is about a 3 hours drive away.

Door County, located on the Door Peninsula, is the easternmost county in Wisconsin. It is usually known for its cherry blossoms, natural beauty and romantic environment. However, Door County is a fantastic snowy winter getaway too!

If you are looking for a laid-back or adventurous winter vacation , the peninsula makes for a great choice. Door County is for everyone, offering different experiences, but all of them include scenic views and snowy landscapes if you visit during wintertime. 

If your main purpose for visiting Door County is to enjoy the snow, cross country skiing is what you should try before anything else. The county has approximately 50 miles of trails in its state parks. Enjoy stunning views while cross country skiing through one of the trails.

After that, visit a tasting room to taste the local beer, cider and wine. There are a number of local breweries like Starboard Brewing Company. The local wineries and vineyards are worth visiting because you get to see the growth of local wines in the wine region of the USA. Shop through the region’s wonderful stores and from some of the most popular and cosy shopping centres like Liberty Square.

The average temperatures in Door County in winter vary from 36°F to 28°F. The sky is mostly cloudy and it experiences an average of 48 inches of snow/year. Some of it falls in November and April, but most of the snow arrives from December through March.

You can fly to Austin Straubel Airport in Green Bay and then drive for one hour to Sturgeon Bay to reach Door County.

Grand Forks, North Dakota

Grand Forks is a pretty town located in North Dakota. It is a fantastic place in the USA for a winter vacation with snow despite its freezing cold temperatures. The town offers an amazing winter season with lots of snow, frozen rivers, and a charmingly decorated town center.

Some of the most unique experiences that you can have in Grand Forks in winter are the natural phenomena, such as seeing the Northern Lights (the Aurora Borealis). In addition, you can also witness sun halos, an optical phenomenon from the many beautiful ice crystals that are in the air.

Grand Forks is also an outdoor enthusiasts’ paradise with snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or ice fishing. Alternatively, become a spectator to an ice hockey game and have a blast!

In February, Grand Forks usually experiences snowy cold temperatures. The average high temperature ranges from around 20°F to 29°F, and the average low temperature in February ranges from approximately 2°F to 13°F.

Grand Forks has its own small regional airport. The closest international airport is Minneapolis-Saint Paul. However, the drive is quite long (almost 5 hours). The better option is to catch a connecting flight to Grand Forks regional airport after arrival.

From Grand Forks airport, you can quickly reach the city center with a cab or a rental car.

Winter Vacation Destinations With Snow

1. duluth, minnesota.

A lot of people avoid Minnesota in winter because of the cold, but if you’re looking for an amazing place to travel with snow (and know how to dress for winter magic ), then this is the spot for you!

Duluth, Minnesota is located right along the shoreline of Lake Superior, and in the winter, has some of the most magical views. Walking the Lakewalk is one of my favorite activities because you can watch as the powerful waves crash in. Plus, you can visit Canal Park, which is home to some of the best restaurants, amazing waterfront hotels , and great shopping.

You can go skiing at Spirit Mountain right in town or head just a short distance up the lake’s shore to Lutsen Mountains, which is the most popular ski resort in the state.

Other great activities in winter in Duluth include snowshoeing, snow tubing, cross-country skiing, and ice skating. 

Around the holiday season, Duluth puts on one of the state’s best holiday light displays , known as Bentleyville. You can walk through the display and enjoy all of the twinkling lights. Or check out the holiday markets and Christmas City Express train rides.

2. Jackson, Wyoming

Although most popular in the summer months to visit Grand Teton National Park, Jackson, Wyoming is another great winter vacation destination .

It’s one of the most popular places in the western United States for skiing, thanks to its incredible slopes that are found right in town! There are three different resorts, with Jackson Hole Mountain Resort being named one of the best in the entire country.

Jackson is also a popular destination for snowmobilers, with hundreds of miles of trails open to this thrilling sport. There are many places to either rent snowmobiles or take part in a guided tour.

There also is really nothing like seeing the Grand Teton mountain range covered in snow. While the park road is closed to vehicles in the winter, you can still access it via cross-country skis, snowshoes, or by walking. It’s so stunning and worth the effort to get in there!

3. New York City, New York

One of the most classic destinations to vacation at during Christmas and New Year is New York City. It’s a magical location with so much to do, even in the winter months.

For starters, Times Square is the perfect place to celebrate the winter season. Try ice skating at Rockefeller Center, watching a show on Broadway, seeing the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, and wandering through local Christmas markets.

As the year comes to an end, you can spend time at the most buzzing place in the entire country, as you watch the ball drop to ring in the New Year. Aside from just watching the ball drop, you can also attend one or a few of the many New Year’s Eve parties that take place in NYC.

Along with all of these great activities, you can also check out the rest of the things that make New York special like shopping in Times Square, wandering through Central Park, and the many museums that line the streets.

4. Leavenworth, Washington

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to live inside a Hallmark Christmas movie, then a visit to Leavenworth, Washington is going to be right up your alley.

This small town is a Bavarian village-inspired area of Washington and is nestled right in the North Cascade mountain range. It’s great to visit any time of year, but during winter, it’s transformed into the most magical winter wonderland.

You’ll find Christmas lights strung everywhere, horse-drawn carriages marching down the street, holiday markets lining the road, and the most beautiful mountain views.

Aside from just the holiday celebrations, you can also check out the amazing winter activities in the surrounding areas. Stevens Pass is a nearby ski resort that has some of the most beautiful skiing that I’ve ever done. The runs are great and the views are even better!

Plus, Leavenworth is a gateway to some of the best hiking trails and road trips in Washington , and you can enjoy many of the trails even in the winter,

5. Bend, Oregon

Another of the best winter vacation destinations with snow is Bend, Oregon (one of the most awesome outdoor spots near Portland !). Bend is a bit more unique than some of the others on this list because there are certain parts that have snow and others that don’t!

Bend is home to some of Oregon’s best skiing at Mount Bachelor. In fact, I’ve heard from some people that they have some of the best riding on powder days in the entire Pacific Northwest , so it’s definitely a must-see for skiers and snowboarders.

There are also tons of opportunities for hiking around Bend, including too many waterfalls. Some of the waterfalls aren’t accessible in winter, but others are, and they’re even more beautiful when surrounded by snow. Sometimes, you can even catch the waterfalls when they’re slightly frozen.

And if at any time you want to escape the snow for a little bit, you can head just slightly north to Smith Rock State Park, and you’ll be put right in the middle of the desert. This beautiful park occasionally has a dusting of snow, which is beautiful. But most of the time, it’s dry!

6. Breckenridge, Colorado

This adorable mountain town is nestled right in the middle of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. It’s a haven for skiers and snowboarders in the winter and is actually one of the places where I found my love for skiing.

Of course, one of the top things to do is skiing, since the Breckenridge Ski Resort is labeled as one of the best in the state. And that’s saying a lot, with how popular the sport is in Colorado!

Breckenridge also has an adorable Main Street, where you’ll find dozens of local shops and restaurants to make a stop into. It’s the perfect place to grab some souvenirs to bring home.

Other fun activities in Breck, as it’s lovingly known by locals, include snowshoeing, dogsledding, hiking , and snowmobiling. There are so many great ways to take advantage of the snow here, and it’s a perfect destination for winter vacations!

7. Lake Tahoe, California

California is probably one of the last places that you think of when you’re planning a snowy winter vacation in the US. But, Lake Tahoe is a totally different story! It has some great skiing, views, nightlife, and luxurious activities for winter .

Lake Tahoe sees an average of around 200 inches of snow per year, which may seem shocking for California. But this just makes Lake Tahoe’s multiple ski resorts a pretty epic place to hit the slopes! Plus, you’ll find some pretty great post-skiing nightlife to check out at the end of the day.

Snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice skating, and cross-country skiing are all other great winter activities in Lake Tahoe.

The area is also known for its luxurious accommodations along the lakeshore, so if you want to really live it up on your vacation, book a stay at one of the many great resorts or hotels!

8. Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City is a haven for snow lovers and adventurous travelers looking to enjoy a snowy winter getaway.

Georgia in Winter: 10 Best Places to Travel for Snow & Sublime Scenery

Winter in Georgia has two major things going for it: Quiet cities and majestic snowy landscapes. If your timing is right, you can catch the ski season. Orthodox holiday traditions in January add to the atmosphere.

Tbilisi remains mild throughout the winter months while the regions vary from fairly frosty to firmly freezing, showcasing all manner of splendid winterscapes: Snow-capped mountains, frozen lakes, sugar-dusted villages, and more.

So while certainly not the best time to visit Georgia for, say, hiking or wild flowers or wine, winter (December-February) is a fine time to plan a city trip or mountain escape. If you’re thinking about travelling to Georgia in winter there are a couple of practical considerations to make when planning an itinerary , some of which I cover here.

In this guide, I’ll show you 10 wonderful places to visit in Georgia in winter and offer a few winter travel tips.

Why visit Georgia in winter?

Starting with the obvious: Temperatures are a lot cooler in winter across the country, and winter is fairly dry in many parts of the country. Compared to hot and cloying summer, winter is altogether a more pleasant time to be outdoors in Tbilisi and Kutaisi particularly.

Winter is the off-season for most of the country, thus you’ll find accommodation prices are lower and there is less pressure on transportation. Some of the country’s best hotels offer nice deals over winter. The exception is the ski resorts (especially Gudauri and Bakuriani) where prices go up.

Some high mountain passes are closed in winter, making it challenging or impossible to visit very remote villages such as Omalo in Tusheti . But the majority of roads remain open, including the roads to Kazbegi and Mestia .

In fact, it’s the Caucasus mountains that make Georgia in winter truly special. Landscapes of snow-capped peaks, little villages with smoke billowing from chimneys and Svaneti’s tower houses wrapped in a blanket of powder are unforgettable.

If you’re interested in skiing and snowboarding, winter is obviously the best time to visit the mountains. If not, there are plenty of other cold-weather activities on offer around the country, from sulfur baths to scenic train rides (read on for lots more ideas). Hearty Georgian cuisine is made for winter, and there’s nothing better than cuddling up at a cute wine bar on a chilly evening.

Finally, double holidays mean twice the fun! December 25 goes by without much fanfare in lieu of Orthodox Christmas, which falls 13 days later. December 31 is the biggest celebration of the holiday period , with a riot of fireworks in Tbilisi. Then you can witness beautiful Orthodox traditions over Christmas, Bedoba and Epiphany.

How cold does it get in Georgia?

Georgia has an extremely diverse climate. Generally speaking, the eastern part of the country is drier and crisper, while the west is more tropical and humid.

Tbilisi remains relatively mild throughout the winter months, averaging 2-8 degrees Celsius during the day from December to February, and dropping down to 0-2 degrees overnight. The mercury rarely dips below freezing. Since there is no ice or sleet – and there are often blue skies over Tbilisi – the city is very pleasant and crisp in winter.

In the mountain regions and plains of southern Georgia, by contrast, winters are very frosty indeed. Popular mountain areas such as Svaneti, Racha and Kazbegi all see heavy snow from December onwards and below freezing temperatures. It can get as cold as -13 degrees Celsius in Mestia and January.

When does it snow in Georgia?

Every year there are typically two or three snowy days in Tbilisi, usually at the very end of winter or the start of spring. Don’t count on seeing snow in the capital: It’s a roll of the dice and even when it does snow, it’s washed away by evening. Sometimes it even snows in Batumi – but you have to be really lucky to see snow on the Black Sea coast!

If you want guaranteed snow, you’ll have to head to a higher altitude. Mestia, Racha , Kazbegi and Upper Adjara near Batumi are all snowy from December onwards. This year (2023) the snow came early to Gudauri and Svaneti, while November in Kutaisi was unusually chilly and wet.

Ski season usually runs from early to mid December until April, with the official opening dates for each ski resort subject to weather conditions.

In summary: If seeing snow in Georgia is your main priority, your safest bet is to visit the mountain areas between January and March, when snowfall is heaviest.

Winter holidays & festivals in Georgia

Here is a quick list of the main calendar dates in Georgia for winter. Note that December 25 is not a holiday – Christmas falls a week later on January 7. Some small businesses close up from December 31 until the first weeks of January, but you will always find plenty of restaurants/cafes/shops open over the holiday period, especially in the winter resorts.

While each of these 10 destinations are all terrific places to visit in Georgia at any time of year, I think they’re especially beautiful in winter.

Tbilisi is not on this list, but it’s my top choice of winter destination in Georgia – see here for my dedicated guide to visiting Tbilisi in winter .

1. Kazbegi – scenic drives & mountain magic

Under four hours by road from Tbilisi, Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is the best place to get a peek at the Greater Caucasus without venturing too far from the city.

The scenic Georgian Military Highway remains open throughout winter, making it easy to reach Kazbegi and visit a slew of winter-wonderful sights along the way, including Gudauri, Pasanauri and Sno Village . The views along this road in winter are nothing short of dazzling – I challenge you to resist the urge to roll the window down at every turn.

Nearby Gudauri takes the lion’s share of winter tourism thanks to its ski slopes. Kazbegi is quieter and much more tranquil by contrast. Some restaurants and cafes close for the winter, but you can always find something open. Venture up to Gergeti Trinity Church (it’s recommended to go by Delica in winter unless you have proper hiking gear) and spend an afternoon on the deck at Rooms sipping glint wine.

2. Gudauri – skiing & chalets

An obvious addition to any list of places to visit in Georgia in winter, Gudauri is the country’s most popular winter resort and a tourist mecca. Skiing, snowboarding and heli-skiing on 64km of runs (serviced by 15 lifts and gondolas) are all available from mid-December onwards.

Gudauri is far from my favourite place, though: It can be crowded and overpriced during the season. But the scenery is admittedly awe-inspiring, I’ll give it that.

The Gudauri-Kobi Cable Car (pictured above) has some of the best scenery in the country, including epic views of Mount Kazbek.

If you’re skiing, go all out and stay at a fancy ski-in chalet . Otherwise, it’s much better to spend an hour in Gudauri on the way up to Kazbegi, where the winter vibe is more pleasant and accommodation far more reasonable.

Last year (2023/24), the ski season at Gudauri official started on December 20. Ski lifts were open from December 15 and operated until April 20.

3. Borjomi & Bakuriani – hot springs, skiing & winter hikes

Located in southern Georgia’s Samtskhe-Javakheti region, Borjomi is one of many places in Georgia with natural hot sulfur pools. A trip to the open-air thermal baths is the perfect way to warm up in winter.

Bakuriani is the second most popular ski resort in Georgia after Gudauri. With 29km of slopes spanning all difficulty levels and 20 ski lifts, this is a snow bunny’s paradise. Elevations range from 1,600-2,700 metres above sea level. Ski season normally starts in mid-December.

Bakuriani sits on the northern slopes of the Trialeti Range in the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus mountains. As you might imagine, the entire area is a winter paradise of ivory coloured trees and hoary hills.

Another must-do (and a big part of the reason so many people visit this area) is to ride the historic Kukushka Train, Georgia’s only scenic rail that runs from Borjomi up to the ski resort. The track delves into deep forest and is absolutely gorgeous in winter. Note: Unfortunately, the Kukushka train was put on pause in March 2020 and will not run for winter 2023/24.

The hills around Bakuriani offer some excellent opportunities for snowshoeing . This winter hiking expedition takes you to several points of interest on the Kukushka train line, including an abandoned sanatorium and a traditional Greek village. I will be trying it out for myself later this winter!

Where to stay in Bakuriani in winter

Run by the same crowd as Rooms Kazbegi, younger sister Rooms Kokhta has similar high-class winter lodge vibes and a gorgeous fit-out.

4. Svaneti – tower houses & majestic peaks

If you want a taste of a raw, rugged mountain winter in Georgia, it doesn’t get much better than Svaneti. Winter arrives early on Georgia’s highest peak and promises a good three months of snow-white landscapes that are almost too perfect to be real.

As a winter destination, Svaneti is quite diverse: Skiing and snowboarding are available at Hatsvali, Mestia town offers a range of cultural and historical attractions, and you can take a side trip to see the tower houses in UNESCO-Listed Ushguli (accessible throughout winter – go with a local driver who knows the roads). To top it off, Kubdari (Svanetian meat pie) might be the pinnacle of winter fare.

All this against a backdrop of the country’s most monumental mountains, with Shkhara and Mount Elbrus as snow-clad sentinels. Snow is visible on the highest peaks from as early as the end of September.

Family Hotel Kala in Mestia has cosy rooms, an open fire in the common lounge, home-cooked meals, and oodles of Svan hospitality.

5. Bakhmaro – cat skiing & alpine air

Located in western Georgia’s Guria region , Bakhmaro is a beloved alpine resort praised for its curative air. Some say this is the purest air in Georgia – that’s why a trip to Bakhmaro is often prescribed to people with respiratory issues.

Summer is the favourite time to visit for dramatic sunsets. In winter, the air is a touch frostier to say the least. The storybook A-frame cottages that dot the mountain labour under heavy snow – up to 5 metres deep in a good year – enclosed by pockets of fir and pine tree forest.

Since the road up to the peak is closed in winter, Bakhmaro is only accessible by cat ski. Swiss-run company Cat Skiing Bakhmaro runs a limited season every year.

6. Lagodekhi – tranquil LANDSCAPES

A hiker’s refuge in summer, in winter, Lagodekhi National Park takes on a completely different character. This little patch of warm, wet forest in arid Kakheti – located very close to the border with Azerbaijan – is all silvery rivers and vast swathes of snowy pasture in the cold months.

Seeking sanctuary from the harsh winter conditions in the mountains of Tusheti, herders bring their flocks down to pasture in Lagodekhi and Vashlovani in winter – hence why you’ll often see streams of sheep roaming the landscape at this time of year.

7. Javakheti – frozen lakes & snow-capped volcanoes

Nicknamed the ‘Georgian Arctic’ for its long and harsh winters, this is one winter destination that’s only for the bold. Bitterly cold and unforgiving, Javakheti demands proper gear, snow tires, and a lot of grit. But if you’re brave enough, it’s one of the most distinct landscapes in Georgia and truly a sight to behold in winter.

The Javakheti Plateau stretches across the southern part of the country along the borders with Armenia and Turkey , and encompasses a handful of small jewel-like lakes interspersed by vast prairies and deep canyons.

Houses huddle together in small villages as if to share warmth, some buried under turf roofs to squeeze every drop of heat out of the earth. Other colourful villages on the lake’s shore are almost Nordic.

Roosting birds make off for warmer pastures as lakes Paravani, Saghamo and Bughdasheni freeze over. Ice crystals take up in every tree, while the surrounding meadows transform into fields of deep snow and the sleeping volcanoes in the distance gather powder on their crowns.

Also in this region, Vardzia Cave City takes on a completely unique appearance in winter as snow collects in its craggy rock cloisters.

8. Forest Sabaduri – fairytale landscape of frosty trees

Just an hour by road from Tbilisi , Sabaduri Forest is the ultimate winter playground and the place to go for photos frolicking over snow-glazed paths amongst powder-puff trees.

Find a quiet spot on the side of the highway that winds its way through Tbilisi National Park and wander off into a snowy paradise.

While you’re there, pay a visit to the Zoological Center , an ethical animal rescue shelter that is home to more than 20 Caucasian brown bears, and check out the incredible mosaics on the Tianeti Highway.

Half an hour further up the road, Sioni Lake looks pretty as a picture when mirroring frozen foliage. Nearby Martkopi Monastery, nestled deep in the forest, rounds out the ideal winter day trip from Tbilisi .

For a real winter treat, book a day trip to Sabaduri and Gudauri ski resort or a guided day trip to Sabaduri, Sioni and the nearby Chronicles of Georgian monument .

Sabaduri is also a wonderful spot to see fiery foliage during the autumn months .

9. Upper Adjara – serious skiing & sweet villages

The highlands above Batumi wear their winter cloak so well. Sweet alpine villages such as Beshumi sport similar A-frame cottages to Bakhmaro and are gorgeous in winter.

Georgia’s third ski resort, Goderdzi, is located in this region and despite being smaller (there is just one gondola and 8.4km of slopes) is probably the most scenic. With fewer tourists, the atmosphere here is more intimate. The season typically runs from December to March.

The Powder Project also runs catski tours in Adjara. According to them, March is the best time to visit for fresh snow and sunny weather.

Goderdzi is four hours’ by road from Batumi. Conditions can be treacherous in winter so it’s best to travel with a local driver .

10. Kakheti – clear skies & frozen VINES

Most people suggest a trip to Kakheti in autumn during the Rtveli grape harvest . Having driven around Kakheti in February, I can tell you Georgia’s wine country is equally beautiful in winter – just in a different way.

The biggest advantage of visiting Kakheti in winter is clear skies. While haze obscures the view at other times of year (particularly in summer), in winter you can see all the way across the Alazani Valley to the Greater Caucasus.

While the vines look a little peculiar when totally bare and covered in frost, wine tastings are still available at many vineyards (just call ahead to check first). There are great deals at luxury hotels such as the Radisson Tsinandali (my personal favourite).

Dry, crisp weather is ideal for roaming the old walls in Sighnaghi or exploring the fortress in Telavi . If you’re lucky, you might even encounter snow in Sighnaghi – I don’t think there’s a more beautiful winter scene anywhere in Georgia.

The stone house at Lost Ridge Inn outside Sighnaghi is super snug in winter, while there’s no beating the home-cooked meals and house wine or craft beer brewed on site. See my full list of Kakheti accommodations here .

What to pack for a winter trip to Georgia

In cities including Tbilisi, you can get by in jeans and a warm coat. If you’re venturing to the mountains, you’ll need waterproof shoes, thermals and all the woolly accessories you can get your hands on.

If you find you haven’t packed enough warm gear, it’s fairly easy to buy jumpers, gloves etc. either new or second-hand in any city or big town.

One important thing to note is that tumble driers are an endangered species in Georgia – everything is dried outside in the sun (as it should be) or inside by the heater during winter. I recommend bringing base layers that will dry quickly after washing.

Travel tips for winter in Georgia

• If you plan on skiing or snowboarding and you don’t want to lug gear around with you, you can hire clothing and equipment at Gudauri or Bakuriani.
• Central gas heating is fairly common in Georgia, but some accommodations use radiators. If you feel the cold, check ahead – and remember to pack plenty of warm layers for the evenings.
• Plan your days (and transport connections carefully). The days are very short in winter and you don’t want to be on the road in a marshrutka van after dark.
• If you plan on hiring a car , make sure you have all the appropriate equipment, including winter tires and tire chains if necessary.

These U.S. Regions Will See the Best Snow Conditions for the 2023/2024 Ski Season, According to Experts

According to a recent report shared by the Old Farmer's Almanac, this will likely be an extremely snowy season for a large swath of the United States.

According to a recent report shared by the Old Farmer's Almanac, this will likely be an extremely snowy season for a large swath of the United States.

“Snowfall will be above normal across most snow-prone areas,” the Almanac reported, adding importantly that the Pacific Northwest may be left out in the, well, cold, when it comes to snow. That region, the Almanac said, will remain cold but relatively dry this season. But, the experts noted that people should “keep a shovel at the ready early especially in the Northeast and Midwest, where snow will arrive beginning in November with storms, showers, and flurries continuing through the start of spring.”

The Almanac also reported that not only will there be above-normal snow this season, but there will also be “colder-than-normal temperatures” in areas that typically receive snow as well. However, “Only snowy New England and the Atlantic Corridor will enjoy winter temperatures milder than typical for their regions,” which means it may be a great year to head to New England mountains like Stowe and Jay Peak, and New York mountains like White Face . Your best chance to see snow in New England, the Almanac said, will occur mid-to-late November, mid-December, and early to mid-January.  The intermountain region, which includes mountains in Utah, Colorado, in Idaho, is also looking to have a fantastic year. In fact, the Almanac stated, “It’s a whiteout! We’re looking at above-normal snowfall. The snowiest periods will be in mid-to-late November, early and late January, and mid-February. Expect a white Christmas!” 

Californians looking to shred at spots like Mammoth , Heavenly, and Palisades will be pumped too, as the forecast is calling for a “wetter than normal” winter with “above-normal mountain snow.” Expect the best conditions in early and late January, early to mid-February, and mid-March. Like Europe, the weather experts at the Almanac expect a strong El Niño to affect weather patterns, along with specific wind patterns, which could displace the polar vortex, opening “the door for cold blasts to hit southern Canada and the central and eastern United States during this upcoming winter.” So yes, have an extra pair of mittens handy. 

However, before we get your hopes too high, we should note that the National Weather Service is predicting an all-out average winter for much of North America. But we’ll take the glass-half-full approach to this one and say average is better than bad, so we can keep the stoke levels high.

Moscow in Winter: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

Travelers who enjoy bundling up for a snowy climate will appreciate all that Moscow has to offer, come winter. This ornamental Russian city shows its vibrant cultural heritage when temperatures plummet and the snow starts falling on Red Square. Unlike other cities, whose residents scurry away to hibernate in December, the people of Moscow embrace their sub-zero climate in style. They don their furs and ushanka hats (traditional hats with earflaps) to peruse Christmas markets, dine out at restaurants, and attend the opera.

In winter, Moscow's scenery looks awe-inspiring under a dusting of snow. There's something undeniably charming about seeing historic sites like the colorful, tented rooftops of Saint Basil's Cathedral capped with a layer of icy frost. The food here is warm and comforting, and the cultural winter events are not to be missed. Plus, it's cheaper to visit Moscow during the winter and it's far less crowded with tourists.

Moscow is not where you go to get a suntan over the holidays. In fact, the Moscow winter is enough to chill any hearty tourist to the bone—but that's all part of the fun. The average high for December, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is 27 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 2.7 degrees Celsius); for January, it's 23 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 5 degrees Celsius); and for February, it's 26 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 3.3 degrees Celsius). Take these average temperatures with a grain of salt, however, as it certainly isn't abnormal for the air to dip into the teens.

The Moscow cold is often accompanied by generous amounts of ice and snow deposited by frequent winter storms. The city goes unfazed by these storms—cars still drive around and people in boots trod through the snowpack. You'll see thick icicles growing on roof overhangs, so be sure not to linger underneath them while you're out touring the area's magnificent cathedrals.

Lastly, don't be surprised if your flights in or out get canceled or delayed. This can be one of the drawbacks to traveling in the winter, in general.

What to Pack

Stuffing your suitcase with bulky (and heavy) winter clothing can be frustrating and expensive, which tends to deter Moscow winter travel altogether. A trip to the city between early December and late February requires enough accessories to cover the extremities: wooly hats, cold-weather socks, knit scarves, and a good pair of gloves. Also pack a coat that falls below the hips, weatherproof boots, and ski pants, if you have them. Remember, fashion is second only to avoiding hypothermia in this polar city.

The Moscow winter calendar is brimming with cultural events for travelers to attend each winter. Many events take place during the Christmas holiday; then, the city caps off the winter with a farewell festival, come February.

• The annual Russian Winter Festival , which spans an entire month starting mid-December, takes place in several locations throughout the city. Head to Izmailovo Park or Revolution Square to see everything from over-the-top ice sculptures to traditional dance performances. Watch the professional ice skaters and visit food trucks that serve traditional fare.
• Moscow's New Year’s Eve celebration is one of the city's biggest events of the year. Tens of thousands of people spend it in Kremlin—Moscow's central complex—watching the Kremlin tower strike midnight, while fireworks crack in the background. Others attend the Christmas tree light show at Red Square.
• Christmas in Russia falls on January 7, and the week between New Year’s Eve and Christmas Day is a time for Russians to relax. Families focus on spending time together at home, preparing traditional foods like ukha (fish soup) and sauerkraut. Tourists can use this uncrowded time wisely by seeking out the city's culinary gems. Make sure to check the hours of operations on restaurants, shops, and other businesses before visiting them during this week. While much of the city's businesses might be closed, you might get special treatment at the places that stay open.
• Maslenitsa , Russia’s farewell-to-winter festival, occurs in late February or early March. This pagan celebration is marked by games, contests, and cultural traditions. It’s held in the Red Square area every year and draws crowds of Muscovites and visitors alike.

Winter Travel Tips

• In order to obtain a Russian travel visa, you'll need to be invited by a relative or friend who is a citizen or a hosting tour company.
• Traveling to Moscow in the winter helps you avoid the summer crowds; however, flight delays due to weather are common. Plan an extra day on either end of your trip in case you get held up.
• If you plan to visit a Russian banya, a Slavic steam bathhouse, take note that most people bathe in the buff. However, most bathhouses are separated by sex.
• Plan alternating indoor and outdoor activities so that you don't get too cold. A visit to the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Armory Museum, or the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts provides a nice respite from the frigid temperatures.

Winter in Russia: From Kaliningrad to Sakhalin (PHOTOS)

1. Kaliningrad

Russia’s most westerly and European city pampers residents with its relatively mild climate. Winters here are not too severe and extreme cold is very rare. However, the annual snowfall still turns the city into a winter wonderland.

The climate of Russia’s northern capital is capricious and unpredictable, plus there are strong winds and high humidity, making low temperatures even harder to endure. Residents still curse Peter the Great for not choosing a warmer locale for his capital...

That said, the sun does occasionally make an appearance, whereupon the white, crisp snow becomes a charming attraction. And a stroll along the frozen expanses of the Neva is always a treat.

3. Murmansk

Snowy cliffs, the cold but not frozen sea (hence a port was built here)... Here, in the largest city inside the Arctic Circle, get ready for the polar nights, which last more than a month — from early December to mid-January.

Many brave the harsh winter for a glimpse of the exquisite Northern Lights, when green-tinted skies shimmer over the frost-bitten landscape. 

Muscovites often complain about the cold and like to travel somewhere warm in winter. But winter here is very fickle. Sometimes the temperature plunges to -10 °C , then the next day climbs to a balmy zero (accompanied by shoe-drenching slush and wet rain). But there can also be prolonged frosts of -15–20 °C . Factoring in the high rather humidity (and Muscovites’ relative intolerance to the cold), these periods are hard to bear. Heavy snowfall can also occur, but the road sweepers usually deal with it quickly, so city life continues apace.

All the same, there is nothing more beautiful than an evening stroll through New Year-lit Moscow — a real winter fairy tale that's worth an extra layer of clothing.

Before the Sochi Olympics in 2014, everyone joked about it being the first subtropical Winter Games. In the city of Sochi itself, it can indeed be +10 °C in winter, and it’s a rare occasion when the temperature drops to zero or the palm trees get a dusting of snow, which quickly melts.

However, up in the nearby mountains, winter makes her presence felt, covering the peaks with snow throughout the fairly long ski season.

Due to the high humidity in the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan on the Volga, the temperature feels much lower than it actually is. So if the thermometer reads -15 °C , you’d be advised to wrap up as if it were 5–10 degrees lower. There’s no shortage of snow here either.

7. Volgograd

On the map, this city seems to be in southern Russia... But the temperature drops are impressive, with scorching summers and bone-chilling winters. Something that the German and other invaders found to their cost in the bloody and decisive Battle of Stalingrad during WWII.

Surprisingly, Russia’s oil-and-gas capital sees more sunny days a year than its actual capital. And the weather here is not so changeable. The coldest month is January, with an average temperature of around -17 °C (which, of course, doesn’t rule out a few -30 °C days and especially nights).

For a really wondrous Russian winter, go to Tobolsk, where the stone walls of the only kremlin in Siberia bear witness to the far harsher frosts of yesteryear.

9. Khanty-Mansiysk

Once upon a time, this region was roamed by woolly mammoths, the only reminder of which are snow-covered bronze sculptures. Here, in the very heart of Siberia, winter arrives in mid-autumn, lowering the mercury and covering the taiga forest with snow.

10. Lake Baikal

11. Yakutsk

Yakutia is the largest and coldest region in Russia. From December to February, the temperature drops to -50°C or lower, and the city is blanketed in thick fog. Yet life goes on! (Read more about how residents survive here )

12. Norilsk

For Russians, the very name of this city is associated with bitter cold. One of the northernmost cities in the world, here too you can experience polar nights and the Northern Lights. Winter lasts from September to May, with an average temperature is -27°C, although the mercury can drop to -40–50°C with gale-force winds. Read more about Norilsk here .

13. Vladivostok

Winter in Primorsky Krai in the Russian Far East is not so much cold as snowy; the precipitation here often breaks all records. Snow-covered streets and roads turn the city into one continuous traffic jam. The inclement weather also causes frequent power outages.

In the winter of 2020, the Russky Bridge, which connects Russky Island to the mainland, completely iced over and had to be manually cleared, during which time all traffic was halted.

14. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

The peaks of the famous Kamchatka volcanoes are snow-covered even in summer. But in winter the snowfall is so heavy that people have to dig out not only their cars, but their doorways.

This climate is paradise for freeriding skiers and snowboarders.

At the same time, you can do a spot of winter surfing on the ocean waves. Winter temperatures on Kamchatka are not particularly severe: -7°C on average in January.

15. Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk

The average winter snowfall on Sakhalin is less than in Kamchatka. And yet there’s still plenty of the white stuff. Moreover, it can fall abundantly even in May, as in the photo below.

Here (as in many northern cities), residents decorate buildings in bright colors or eye-catching graffiti: first, it cheers people up; and second, it’s easier to find your home in a blizzard!

The Hokuriku Region is served by four main airports:

• Niigata Airport (Niigata Prefecture)

There are shuttle buses from Komatsu Airport to Kanazawa Station, taking about 40 minutes, and buses from Niigata Airport to JR Niigata Station, taking approximately 33 minutes on regular buses and 25 minutes on direct buses.

With the Hokuriku Shinkansen, you can travel from Tokyo to Kanazawa in just 2 hours and 27 minutes. Osaka, Kyoto, and Nagoya are also popular entry points to the Hokuriku Region.

Delicacies and souvenirs from the Hokuriku Region

The Noto Peninsula in central Hokuriku boasts a variety of rich seafood, including the renowned Matsuba crab and the Toyama Bay shiro-ebi white shrimp.

Fukui offers the exquisite Habutae Mochi, a traditional confectionery inspired by the region's renowned silk garments. It makes for a perfect souvenir, beautifully  representing the region's cultural heritage.

Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum

The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, located in Katsuyama City, is Japan's largest dinosaur museum and a globally renowned destination for both families with young children and dinosaur fans.

Fukui has unearthed 80 percent of Japan's dinosaur fossils, displayed alongside lifelike models in a futuristic setting, offering visitors a magical time-travel experience. Visitors can also participate in fossil excavation experiences by reservation.

Awara Onsen

Awara Onsen, with a history dating back to the Meiji era (1868-1912,) is situated in the northern part of Fukui Prefecture. Boasting 74 different types of hot springs, each inn offers unique therapeutic benefits and styles. Visitors can also explore the local cuisine at Awara Onsen Yataimura Yukemuri Yokocho and experience a different hot spring atmosphere at the Awara Onsen Ashiyu foot bath facility.

Ishikawa Prefecture's largest city, Kanazawa, features notable attractions like the scenic Kenrokuen Garden and the traditional Higashi Chaya District, reflecting the historical prosperity of the city.

21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa is one of Japan’s most popular art museums, which exhibits works of renowned contemporary artists from around the world.

Its most popular permanent display is Leandro Ehrlich’s Swimming Pool, which offers Instagram-perfect photo ops. There is also a cafe, a museum store, and a children’s workshop on site.

Higashi Chaya District

NICE WEEKEND WEATHER

The first weekend of June is shaping up to be a beautiful one! Saturday afternoon will remain sunny with temperatures climbing into the upper 70s. Coastal areas will be slightly cooler, but overall, it will be an excellent day to be outdoors.

Sunday promises even warmer weather, with highs reaching the low 80s under plenty of sunshine. The entire weekend will feature low humidity, making it comfortable for any activities you have planned. Morning temperatures will start in the 50s, providing a refreshing start to each day. Whether it’s the beach or backyard, this weekend’s weather is ideal!

WORK WEEK PREVIEW

Monday will continue the trend of warm and sunny weather with temperatures near 80 degrees and a few more clouds. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will be equally pleasant, with highs in the mid-70s. Once again, it will be a few degrees cooler along the coast each of these days too, particularly Tuesday.

As we get later into the week, you’ll want to keep an eye on Thursday and especially Friday, as there is a better chance for rain and possibly some storms. Despite this, it’s going to be a week filled with mostly sunny weather and comfortable temperatures, perfect for easing into meteorological summer!

Germany has followed the US in approving strikes inside Russia using its weapons - as Moscow warns the moves could cause a war with NATO. Meanwhile, Ukraine reportedly launched a large missile and drone attack overnight.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has wrapped up a flurry of negotiations in Sweden and signed long-term security deals with Norway and Iceland.

Earlier, we reported that the Ukrainian president had struck an agreement while in Stockholm (see 13.26 post).

Now, Mr Zelenskyy has signed a 10-year deal with Norway, through which Oslo will focus on supporting Ukraine's maritime and air defence needs.

Norway would be "open" to the Norwegian defence industry localising production in Ukraine under the deal. Iceland has also committed to a 10-year pact.

The new agreements mean Mr Zelenskyy now has 15 written pacts with Western nations, including all five Nordic countries - which are all NATO countries.

He previously agreed security pacts with Denmark and Finland in February and April respectively.

Sweden's agreement means Stockholm will transfer two ASC 890 surveillance aircraft as well as its entire stock of armoured tracked personnel carriers.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said earlier: "You are literally fighting not only for your own freedom but also for our freedom and our security."

A Russian-American journalist will be detained until at least 5 August ahead of an investigation and trial.

Alsu Kurmasheva, an editor for the US government-funded Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty’s Tatar-Bashkir service, was taken into custody on 18 October.

She's been charged with failing to register as a foreign agent while collecting information about the Russian military.

Later, she was also charged with spreading "false information" about the Russian military.

Ms Kurmasheva told reporters she suffered from various health conditions which could not be properly treated in detention. 

She also said she had last heard her children's voices in October, and held up two children's drawings for reporters which she said had been sent to her and had lifted her spirits.

She was the second American journalist detained in Russia last year, after Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich.

He was arrested on espionage charges in March. A year later, President Joe Biden said  the US was "working every day"  to secure his release.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Russia is trying to disrupt Ukraine's peace summit in June by blackmailing world leaders.

Speaking in Stockholm after signing a security pact with Sweden, the Ukrainian president said: "The most important thing right now is the peace summit. It should become a truly global summit.

"At this moment, we already have about 100 states and international organisations that will participate in the summit, but Russia is blackmailing some leaders and trying to block the participation of some countries."

Earlier, China's foreign ministry spokesperson defended Beijing's refusal to attend the summit - held 15-16 June in Switzerland - which Russia is not invited to.

Mao Ning insisted its demands for an international peace conference that is recognised by both Russia and Ukraine are "fair" and "impartial" (see 10.53 post).

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later said China's decision shows Beijing understands that holding a peace summit without Russia would be futile.

Mr Zelenskyy also said it's "a question of time" before Ukraine uses Western weapons to strike targets inside Russia (see 13.26 post).

The Kremlin has dismissed France's refusal to invite Russian officials to events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in the Second World War.

Yesterday, the French presidency said Russia would not be invited next week over what Paris called "Moscow's war of aggression" against Ukraine.

Despite Vladimir Putin and officials accusing the West of trying to "erase" Russia's contributions to the war effort, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was planning for next year's Victory Day.

He said "next year, you know, is an extremely important year for us", as it marks 80 years since the Soviet Union defeated Nazi Germany.

"This is our main priority in terms of memorial actions."

Earlier this week, Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Western countries of presenting D-Day as "the main event that decided the outcome of World War Two".

She said: "Of course, nothing is said in the West about the fact that no landing in Normandy would have been possible without the successes of the Red Army. 

"They are trying not only not to remember, but to erase it."

Kremlin officials have today been issuing various statements - including dire threats of war with NATO - in response to Western powers' decisions to let Ukraine use weapons they have supplied to attack inside Russia.

But Jens Stoltenberg, the military alliance's secretary-general, has dismissed the threats and insisted NATO was simply helping Kyiv defend itself.

"This is nothing new. It has… been the case for a long time that every time NATO allies are providing support to Ukraine, President Putin is trying to threaten us to not do that," he said in Prague.

"And an escalation – well, Russia has escalated by invading another country."

Citing Russia's northern offensive against the Kharkiv region in Ukraine, Mr Stoltenberg added: "Ukraine has the right for self-defence, we have the right to help Ukraine uphold the right for self-defence, and that does not make NATO allies a party to the conflict.

"That was the case back in February 2022, that was the case last year, that remains the case."

Ten foreign ministers, including Lord Cameron, are demanding North Korea stop supplying weapons to Russia.

Earlier this month, Russia dismissed claims it was working with Pyongyang on military matters and said the relationship between the countries was not a threat to others.

But the ministers say Russia is using North Korean arms transfers "to strike Ukraine's critical infrastructure, prolonging the suffering of the Ukrainian people".

They also called for North Korea to end its nuclear weapons programme.

Yesterday, North Korea fired a barrage of ballistic missile to show it is willing to strike South Korea's "gangsters' regime" pre-emptively.

Meanwhile, some of the officials are in Prague for a two-day NATO summit, where they've discussed allowing Ukraine to use weapons they have supplied to strike inside of Russia.

Germany announced it will allow Kyiv to do so, to the anger of Russian officials (see 10.30am post).

Earlier, we reported that Ukraine and Russia had carried out their first prisoner swap since February (see 13.05 post).

Now, Ukraine's defence ministry has shared a video of freed prisoners singing Ukraine, originally by Taras Petrynenko, as they're brought back home.

Leading the sing-along is Kostyantyn Myrhorodskyi, who was in Russian captivity for more than two years.

Some of the men with him on the coach can be seen weeping as they are overcome with emotion by the moment. 

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has confirmed Joe Biden approved for US weapons to be used inside Russia. 

Speaking to reporters in the Czech Republic following a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, Mr Blinken said Ukraine asked for authorisation to allow its forces to defend itself against Russian attacks, particularly in the city of Kharkiv.

The meeting of NATO foreign ministers comes before a summit in Washington from 9 -11 July. 

Mr Blinken said during the summit, "concrete steps" will be taken to bring Ukraine closer to NATO and the US will "ensure there's a bridge for Ukraine to NATO membership".

He said the summit is happening at a "pivotal time" when Russia is intensifying its attacks against frontline regions in Ukraine.

After last night's missile strike on a block of flats, Russia's defence ministry says it has carried out 25 attacks in Kharkiv.

According to the Interfax news agency, the strikes were carried out between 25 May and 31 May with precision-guided weapons, and targeted Ukrainian military facilities.

The ministry adds Russian troops are advancing in several directions - and have captured two villages - Berestove and Ivanivka - in the Kharkiv region.

Northwest Montana mountain snowpack rebounds in May

High-elevation snowpack in the Swan Range has remained near or above historical averages for most of May thanks to a series of cold storms that dumped snow and rain across the region.

The snow-water equivalent measurement registered at 39.1 inches for Noisy Basin on May 26, according to data collected at a SNOTEL weather station located at 6,040 feet. The median for that date is 31.6 inches. The snow-water equivalent is the amount of water held in the snowpack.

Likewise, about 83 inches of settled snowpack remains at Noisy Basin, considerably more than the median of 65.5 inches for May 26. 

While a dry winter fueled by an El Nino weather pattern kept Northwest Montana's mountain snowpack below average through the beginning of May, late-season snow storms have maintained and even added to the snow depth in some areas.

The Noisy Basin snowpack actually peaked for the season on May 9 at 108 inches. The peak depth normally occurs in mid April before completely melting out by late June.

It’s a similar situation for Northwest Montana’s other mountain ranges.

A weather station on Flattop Mountain in Glacier National Park showed a snow depth of 72 inches on May 26, slightly below the median of 80.5 inches. Snow depth at Stryker Basin in the Whitefish Range was 50 inches, while Big Mountain's upper reaches still held 53 inches of snow.

Overall, the Flathead Basin snowpack was 85% of normal on May 26, and 79% in the Kootenai Basin.

In the valley, Kalispell has seen measurable precipitation on 15 days so far this month. Between May 22-25, about 1.13 inches of rain was measured at Glacier Park International Airport. Precipitation month-to-date for Kalispell is 1.89 inches, slightly higher than the average of 1.42.

The Flathead River at Columbia Falls crested at 8 feet during the recent rainy spell and was expected to rise to 10 feet by mid week. Flood stage is 13 feet.

Potent and potentially dangerous thunderstorms could affect the Flathead Valley on Tuesday. Heavy rainfall of half an inch in 30 minutes is possible. Urban areas could see ponding of water in poor drainage areas if they take a direct hit from a storm, according to the National Weather Service in Missoula.

Temperatures will run 5-10 degrees below normal, with overnight lows dipping into the 30s Wednesday night through Friday.

High pressure returns by the weekend with pleasant temperatures in the 70s.

Blinken will head to eastern Europe as concerns mount about Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to eastern Europe next week as concerns mount about Russia’s advances in Ukraine , potential Russian interference in neighboring Moldova and pro-Moscow legislation being promoted in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, the State Department said Friday.

Blinken will visit the Moldovan capital of Chişinau on Wednesday before attending a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Prague on Thursday and Friday. That meeting will be the military alliance’s last major diplomatic get-together before leaders meet at a summit to celebrate NATO’s 80th anniversary in Washington in July.

The trip comes just two weeks after Blinken made an unannounced trip to Ukraine to reassure Kyiv of Washington’s support in the face of intensified Russian attacks in its north. There are also signs Russia may be considering new actions in Moldova and is behind anti-Western moves in Georgia that the U.S. believes run counter to Moldovan and Georgian aspirations to integrate with Europe.

At his first stop in Chişinau, Blinken will meet Moldovan President Maia Sandu to reaffirm U.S. backing for Moldova’s progress on joining the European Union, the State Department said. The top U.S. diplomat for Europe, James O’Brien, said Blinken would announce a “robust” support package for Moldova, where there are 1,500 Russian troops stationed in the disputed territory of Transnistria .

“There’s not a direct military threat that we see at this time, but there’s ongoing Russian influence operations, and that is of concern,” O’Brien told reporters. He did not give details of the support package.

Moldova, like Ukraine, is a candidate member for EU membership and has repeatedly accused Russia of conducting a “hybrid war” against the country, meddling in local elections and running vast disinformation campaigns to try to topple the government and derail its path toward joining the 27-nation EU.

Russia has denied the accusations, but the Moldovan government is wary of Moscow’s intentions, particularly after Transnistrian authorities appealed to Moscow in February for “protection” due to what they said was increased pressure from Chişinau.

In Prague, Blinken will meet Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský and other officials to discuss support for Ukraine, including a Czech initiative to supply more munitions to Kyiv, before attending the NATO gathering.

With Ukraine as the top agenda item, NATO ministers also will be looking at developments in Georgia, which like Ukraine, aspires to join NATO and is embroiled in controversy over legislation that many believe is driven by Moscow and intended to thwart Georgia’s Western aspirations.

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili vetoed the “Russian law” targeting media that has sparked weeks of mass protests , but the ruling party has a parliamentary majority sufficient to override her veto and is widely expected to do so.

The legislation would require media and nongovernmental organizations to register as “pursuing the interests of a foreign power” if they receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad. Critics say it closely resembles legislation the Kremlin used to silence opponents and that it will obstruct Georgia’s bid to join the EU.

Late Thursday, Blinken announced that the U.S. would impose travel bans on Georgian officials “who are responsible for or complicit in undermining democracy in Georgia, as well as their family members. This includes individuals responsible for suppressing civil society and freedom of peaceful assembly in Georgia through a campaign of violence or intimidation.”

Blinken’s announcement did not identify anyone who has already been targeted, but it also said the U.S. would undertake a comprehensive review of U.S.-Georgia cooperation.

“It remains our hope that Georgia’s leaders will reconsider the draft law and take steps to move forward with their nation’s democratic and Euro-Atlantic aspirations,” he said. “As we review the relationship between our two countries, we will take into account Georgia’s actions in deciding our own.”
