Shindzela Tented Safari Camp

Lodge style Eco-friendly, affordable and relaxing

Affordable tented camp in the heart of the Timbavati

In a bygone era, safari was all about the sights, sounds and smells of Africa. Get a hold of this authentic feeling when you sleep under canvas. Each of the canvas tents at Shindzela Tented Camp has a thatch grass roof, to keep you cool in the African heat and cosy in the winter. Tents are built on wooden decks and come with a private veranda. Six of the eight tents have a view at the waterhole across the camp. Tent number seven and eight are more remote and slightly further from the main area, overlooking the dry riverbed. Your room has everything you need: mosquito nets, comfortable beds with fresh linen, moisturizing South African-made amenities (like body lotion, body wash and insect repellent), and a private en-suite bathroom with hot shower and soft towels. All tents are equipped with eco friendly solar lighting. And talk about reconnecting with nature: the tents don’t have electrical outlets. But no worries: there is a charging station in the main area. As is a WiFi connection, although you might feel like switching off – not just your devices - for a while.

Activities at Shindzela Tented Camp

The Timbavati Game Reserve shares unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park - a conservation area over five million acres – which allows free movement of wildlife. The list of animals is mind blowing; the Big Five, white lion, hyena, jackal, giraffe, hippo, wild dog, zebra, kudu and impala, over 350 birds species – just to name a few. Discover all this beauty on the game drives in the morning and afternoon. It will be a private affair since Shindzela is the only safari operator in this concession area. Or get even closer to wildlife – the big, the small and the tiny - on a bush walk with an experienced ranger. And what is a classic safari camp without a back-to-basic sleep hideout for truly dedicated nature enthusiasts? Away from the main camp, soak up the magic of African nights, marvel at the stars, and listen to the wildlife that is wide-awake at night. You will be safe; as your guide is there at all times. However you organise your days, a home cooked meal is always waiting for you. Don’t expect a pretentious, bloated menu: the meals are simply packed with flavour, fresh vegetables, fruit and a lot of love from chefs Shadrack and Phindile. Enjoy an English breakfast, tasty cottages pies, quiches, traditional African BBQ or lamb potjie (lamb stew) and definitely try the Shindzela-style pizza. If you are seeking wholesome food in a genuine safari setting, don’t look any further.

Tripadvisor comments Shindzela Tented Camp

We stayed 4 nights (in tents 7 & 8) and thoroughly enjoyed our time with the excellent staff, great drives (twice a day) and hearty food. The tents are comfy with very good beds. The open camp makes for animals roaming through the camp at night. The small scale (8 tents) allows for a very personal approach. The rangers are professional, approachable and very knowledgeable. We really liked the fact that the jeeps (only 2 max) are going off road to approach the animals closely. This is the real deal ! Marja & Marc like to thank the entire team at Shindzela ! PS : excellent wifi! Marcinbrussels from Brussels, Belgium
We had a fantastic two nights at the Shindzela camp. The crew greeted us warmly and the accommodation was really cool. The tents offered luxurious beds and private bathroom attached to it. That's how I imagined glamping. Our guide Johan is extremely knowledgeable & has a great sense of humour. I still don't know how he did it, but he found us two bright green chameleons on green trees after the sun had long gone down. I guess that still impressed me the most. I've been on other safaris before but have to say this was definitely one of the best guided ones! Thank you very much! bogota05

Pascal is a travel angel! Highly recommend him.
We started planning for our safari trip contacting a bunch of different travel advisors but Pascal's service truly stood out to us as the best in the industry. He took care of planning everything from start to finish for our very last minute honeymoon trip (literally a month out and during the busiest safari season). He is extremely meticulous and very responsive to our 100 questions. He shared first hand experiences at each of the different lodges, personal pictures and gave us solid recommendations within our budget. He hopped on a call with us initially to explain all the differences to us first time safari goers, and continued to be very flexible and patient with us as we couldn't decide! We are very excited for our trip and cannot thank Pascal enough for being our first interaction on our upcoming trip.

Shindzela Tented Camp, Timbavati (Review)

Last year we set out to visit some smaller lodges in private game reserves and in our search of going rustic we spent a night in a generally under-valued lodge, Shindzela . The name itself actually means one of my favourite animals of all time, the Honeybadger! What an awesome little affordable camp, read here why you should definitely visit this camp on your next African Safari adventure. Get in touch with us if you’d like us to tailor the perfect wildlife safari for you 🙂

Shindzela accommodation

One of the most attractive things about Shindzela is that the camp is unfenced which means that you have the opportunity to see cool animals right in camp! Don’t worry, armed guides do escort you to and from your tent at night so there is no need to worry about anything. The camp is also very environmentally friendly using minimal solar electricity and gas as energy sources.

Shindzela Food

If you like hearty homecooked meals Shindzela will definitely not disappoint you. The meals at Shindzela are perhaps not as fancy as some of the five star lodges put of offering however they are more than substantial  and extremely tasty! Cooked by a local chef, it can truly be noticed that every bit of effort is put into feeding you with pride! All meals are communal which gives you a chance to get to know the other guests and we were even lucky enough on the night we spent there to be treated to a boma dinner while sitting around a fire and overlooking the very productive waterhole.

Game Viewing at Shindzela

Although we were only there for one night (one afternoon game drive and one morning game drive), we still managed to see three of the big five with only cats eluding us but this was more than made up for by being able to spending most of the morning drive at an African Wild Dog denning site! Unfortunately the pups were simply too young to make an appearance but while we spent some time at the den the pack returned from a hunt and it was extremely special to see the interaction between some of the den guarding members and returning hunting party. While we missed cats, we know from social media posts that Shindzela offers a good chance of finding cats – particularly lions. Plus the game viewing continued while in camp, when a nice herd of ellies came down to drink at the waterhole during breakfast! Here’s a (slightly shaky) video of the wild dog sighting:

The game drives that we went on were extremely informative and the guide we had (Jaco) was very helpful with identifying birds and giving a more personalised experience in the bush- rather than chase up and down the road which happens at a lot of game reserves where the guides only search for the big five and tend to overlook the other cool things in the bush. If you are lucky enough to stay at Shindzela you can also ask for Johan, the head guide, as he is awesome and extremely knowledgeable and he will ensure that you have a great experience on drives! Johan is a very good photographer so if you are keen on photography he will be of good assistance there too.

What we love about Shindzela

  • Good hearty meals and plenty of food (go hungry)!
  • The safari tents are very comfortable while keeping it rustic
  • Very knowledgeable guides
  • Owner run-on site. Call on the owner/manager and speak to them about anything!
  • Free wifi at the main area
  • Only 8 tents so even when full it is still intimate and relatively quiet
  • Good quality game drives and game viewing
  • More of a personal feel rather than you being a random “guest” or “room number”
  • The camp is completely UNFENCED so you are in the bush! (animals could move freely into and through camp)
  • The camp waterhole is quite productive so game viewing continues even when not on drive
  • Offer guided game walks in big five area
  • Very affordable compared to other game lodges in this area
  • There are not many lodges in the area so you are typically able to spend longer at sightings than when staying at lodges in higher traffic areas (south of timbavati or many places in Sabi Sands for example)

Considerations (things some people may not like)

  • Ensuite is open so during winter could be quite cold plus there is no bath
  • No air conditioning, so during the summer months you may be a little less comfortable (particularly in the day)
  • Drinks are not included in package (additional cost)
  • Unfenced camp – we personally love this but some people prefer the added security of a fence
  • The traversing area is smaller than many other lodges and fewer lodges around mean less help in finding sightings (and calling them over the radio) – this means you tend to get quality over quantity in terms of sightings. Personally this is a good thing for us, but if it’s your first safari and you desperately want to find the Big 5 in only a few days, it may not be the best option.

So should you stay at Shindzela?

Shindzela Tented Safari Camp Location Map

Situated in the Timbavati Game Reserve, Shindzela Tented Safari Camp offers an affordable Kruger safari holiday without compromising on important safari experiences such as the thrill of viewing African wildlife, marvelling at a beautiful sunset or relaxing around the camp fire with a drink.

The main focus is on game drives in open 4x4 vehicles (day and night drives) as well as walking safaris.

The open Land Cruisers can comfortably accommodate 10 guests per vehicle. The game drives (one drive early morning and one late afternoon and early evening which last for approximately 3 to 3.5 hours each, depending on animal movements) are conducted in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve on Shindzela’s traversing concession and often you will drive off-road into the bush in search of predators or unusual sightings.

The walking safaris (maximum of 8 guests) are led by a professional, experienced safari guide and a tracker.  Your Kruger walking safari generally begins at dawn and there is ample opportunity to stop along the trail to examine interesting features of the bush or to observe animals, before returning to the camp mid morning to enjoy a hearty brunch.

Shindzela has 8 safari canvas tents. Each tent is built on a wooden deck and has a thatch grass roof, designed to keep you cool in summer and cosy in winter. The tents all have a private en-suite bathroom and a private deck/porch where you can sit and relax. Six of the tents have a view of the waterhole and 2 tents are set further away, offering slightly more privacy with views of the dry river bed.

The main guest areas at the camp include a swimming pool, a dining area and a lounge area.

Welcome to Shindzela

Exterior view of safari tent, breakfast buffet, walking safari, double safari tent, swimming pool, morning coffee stop, en-suite reed bathroom, guest amenities, tent interior, bedside lamp, view from riverbed, breakfast and lunch settings.

Prices are on a per person sharing basis (pps).

Rates Include

All meals; tea/coffee; the Timbavati Conservation Levy; and daily shared safari activities (morning/afternoon game drives and/or walking activities) are included. PLEASE NOTE: Other drinks are NOT included. IN ADDITION: For self-drive visitors, there is a vehicle entrance fee of R280 per vehicle (subject to change), which is payable at the Timbavati Gate (cash or Visa/MasterCard credit cards only).

Children Policy

Children aged 10 years and older are welcome. Rates available on request. Children under the age of 16 may not participate in a walking safari.

Bush Walks / Walking Safaris

Children under the age of 16 years are not permitted on bush walks. Children 16 to 21 years of age to be accompanied by an adult.

Guests over 60 years old wishing to join a bush walk are required to have a letter or certificate from their doctor confirming they are in good health and are physically fit to do the walk. A bush walk can last a couple of hours and involve walking over uneven terrain that may contain dangerous wildlife in potentially high temperatures. Guests may need to move quickly and for a sustained period through rough bush terrain if instructed to do so by their guide.

Regardless of age or the provision of a doctors certificate, the final decision on whether a guest can join a bush walk remains with the guide and lodge manager.

Guests must also be able to speak and understand English fluently.

We are undisturbed by some of the modern conveniences such as television, preferring to immerse ourselves in the African wilderness. Shindzela also has a swimming pool in camp where guests can relax and overlook our small watering hole. The camp accommodates just 16 guests, and offers both walking safaris, and game drives twice daily.

Shindzela is a comfortable tented bush camp, set on the banks of a dry riverbed, facing a small watering hole. We offer an authentic African safari experience in an unfenced, private and natural wilderness environment. Our Safari Tents can either be made up in twin or double bed accommodation.

We just came back from our first ever safari trip. We went not knowing what to expect. After our first game drive, we got to know why Sabi Sands Lodges are the best when it comes to big five game viewing. We managed to view all of the big five on one day.

The accommodation was perfect and the staff were exceptionally friendly. We are hooked, we will certainly visit Sabi Sabi again, very soon.

A wonderful visit that was nothing short of perfect. Amazing game sightings, the best I've had (and it is always good), our Ranger and Tracker were great fun and very knowledgable, the staff were on the ball and the atmosphere and mood relaxed and attentive. My 6th visit, and great that Ulusaba is back to its best, thank you!

Highly recommended. Amazing in many ways. Great safari experience. Unsurpassed food. Kind staff. Two safaris a day for three days. One extra walking safari midday. Excellent game viewing. Night time star gazing by the fire. Trip to the village. Great amenities. Boma, Observation points. Nice little library. The staff will walk you to your cabin at night. Our first time here was 2006 but this is the place to come for the best safari lodge experience. This is the place to come back to.

We loved the fact that we were teamed up with the same driver/tracker/four other guests in the same car over the course of all the days - we had such fun together and really got involved in trying to spot the animals. And we were rewarded with multiple leopard sightings and the other big 5, as well as all the other beautiful animals - zebra, giraffes, kudu, impala etc - and many birds. The rooms - including outdoor shower, dining area, food, pool, gift shop, massage, the lovely candle light (and lack of electric lighting) and special sundowner by the river were all fabulous. We felt so relaxed and welcomed. The staff were professional and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. They went the extra mile to engage with my 9 year old daughter. This place suited us perfectly. It was top class without being pretentious. Worth every penny - and actually better value than some other lodges. Recommended without hesitation. We hope to return one day. Thank you to all - Dale, Suzie, Gift, Desmond, Tulani, Riddent, Joe and everyone else (sorry if names are miss-spelt).

After spending 2 nights at the Dulini River Lodge we spent 2 nights at the Dulini Lodge. Even though both Lodges are in the same Reserve and very close they offer a different athmosphere. The Dulini Lodge gives you a stronger "Africa feeling" in terms of decoration and setup in my view.

The bungalows are very spacious and well equipped. The welcome is kind and warm and the staff is amazing. They provided me with a special birthday dinner which made the stay even more memorable.

The game drives with the Ranger Fred and our tracker May where an experience. We saw a lot and as haveing been on Safari before we received so much more indepth information since we did not have to worry about seeing all the big 5 (which we saw anyway).

Will try to be back whenever possible

Everything wonderful, just come back from part of Titan Tour. We saw the big five and so much more. Couldn't fault it and would love to go back. You have to be there to believe how good it is, and how close you get to what is after all wild animals. I could have almost touched one of the lions we saw!!

This was a perfect place for a safari. We stayed in one of the two suites, and this was perfect. The game drives were so exiting. Of 8 game drives we saw leopards at 7 of them. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The food was nice. The skills of the tracker and ranger was fantastic. It was so nice to follow how they read the tracks in the sand and bushes. We saw the big 5 and a lot more. If would go back? YES

If you are planning a trip to S.A. And want to spend time in the bush, then Sabi Sands is a must. We have been travelling to to South Africa every year for the past 12 years and stayed at many game reserves including the Krugar many times. This year we saved up hard and achieved our dream, to stay in Sabi Sands. All that I can say it's Well Worth every penny, the reserve is just something else! It's the best and it's a must, forget the rest push the the boat out and and stay at in Sabi Sands.. We chose Elephant Plains due to our budget. It was wonderful food fantastic, staff brilliant, service first class. We saw the big five for the the first time in 12 years.... So if you are looking for a safari holiday then look no further this place is the best. Memories we will never forget.

This was a great experience overall. The resort was nice and homely. Our ranger Kelsey and tracker Bennett were very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions that we had. The game drives were exciting and the search for the leopard was one of the highlights of the trip. The rooms were spacious, and the food was almost unending. The only downside, and understandably so, was the inability to move from one room to another, after dark. While our sons were older and able to stay on their own, families with slightly younger children may have to stay in one chalet. Strongly recommend it!!

We had a great overall experience at Mala Mala. We saw abundant animals and several exciting interactions between them. Our guide was knowledgeable and nice (the others in our group had a guide who had had incredible intuition for finding animals and we benefited from it). The rooms are nice, beautiful and comfortable. The food was good/okay... We were there for three nights and it seemed like there were a lot of repeats between the meals. The staff were all friendly and the customer service was great!

Fabulous three days at Idube Game Reserve. Lovely people. amazing food. So many highlights. But one stood out. When we surprised a rhino and it charged our Land Cruiser, leave it to our guide, Brogan, to take care of business. With a sharp, "OY!", the rhino stopped it charge, turn around and trotted back to its mate. Note that the wifi was only available in the office when we went, but it's due for an upgrade any date. Pro-tip: No cell coverage, but the office has a cell tower booster. Turn off your wifi, and your phone will pick up the cell booster if you have a local phone or international plan

We absolutely loved this resort. The staff is so warm and welcoming, the rooms and public areas are beautifully and comfortably decorated, the food was delicious (I'm a San Francisco foodie pescetarian and absolutely loved the food/presentation), and the game drives were unforgettable. Don't miss the bush walk--we walked through a field of butterflies, saw all kinds of animal tracks, and enjoyed a different view of the landscape we'd been driving through all week. I would also highly recommend visiting the Thornybush Community Project gardens with Gavin, where some of the beautiful food served in Sabi Sand resorts is grown by local women as part of a community collective. We also visited a school, which had an incredible impact on us. I loved Simbambili--a little piece of my heart is still there

Hello friends,

I currently have reservations in November for 3 nights at Thabamati Luxury tented camp. I am taking this trip with my mom (I’m buying), and I’m trying to keep it fairly upscale, but my budget only extends so far. My original pick was Rockfig, it looked amazing. However, the price difference between Thabamati and Rockfig is significant, I think Rockfig is currently averaging R15,400 pppn, whereas Thabamati is only R9050. The luxury factor seems pretty comparable, only downside being beverages not included at Thabamati except for planned sundowners. Both have exclusively 5 star review on TA. I don’t know, I think maybe I’m reaching the final steps of my planning and am having doubts about whether I might miss out on something/leave a better experience on the table. Does anyone believe rockfig would be superior to the point I should fork over more (a lot more) money and stay there instead? Or is the experience likely to be just as good and I should stick to thabamati?

For reference, our Timbavati stay is the first leg of our trip, and will be followed by 2 days free drive pano route area, 3 days ulusaba safari lodge, 4 nights Cape Town, and 5 nights at two separate locations in okavango delta.

If you can add a night then Rock FIg comes down significantly with their pay 3/stay 4 nights special. Thabamati only uses one vehicle with all 8 guests. Rock Fig puts only 4 guests in a vehicle. That's a big difference, especially if you are interested in photography. I also would imagine that if all the guests are in the vehicle and people come and go each night then there may be more pressure on the ranger to show everyone the Big 5 and you may not get as much time devoted to seeing or searching for the other wildlife.

You may want to ask the lodges about their traversing areas. Not all lodges in the Timbavati can go into all blocks and it can make a difference.

Edited to say - I would take a day away from the Pano Route to increase to 4 nights at Rock Fig and take advantage of the special but I am someone who spends all of my time in the bush while in RSA.

shindzela tented safari camp timbavati

I have never minded 8 in a vehicle and have found all guests to be considerate at sightings giving each other the opportunity to take good photos. People are also willing to swap seats each drive, so everyone gets a turn in the "side" seats. Unless you are a serious photographer with camera mounts and tripods, etc. I don't see the need to spend so much more to guarantee a side seat.

And as far as having to pay for alcoholic beverages, you would have to a very serious drinker to come anywhere close to spending the price difference on alcohol.

Thabamati is situated overlooking a large dam so you will always have animal sightings from the lodge during the down time between drives. You will be lulled to sleep with the sounds of hippos!!! Definitely my choice.

I think my brain is maybe in the part of the trip planning where you start to panic about if you made the right decision, if you are missing out on something better/something else, etc. I can’t lie, I think rockfig seduced me with their elephants drinking from the pool scene haha, and then everyone raved about it and so I started having doubts. But I actually like the stylings of thabamati’s rooms better, and fewer guests overall.

I spent several months in SA in my 20’s and I don’t remember a lot of people to a vehicle being an issue either, and that was some times as many as 9, and in these trucks with horrible bench seating that weren’t even elevated (everyone sitting flat/at the same level). I don’t even think the seating was attached to the bed of the truck lol, you were just banking on the weight of the passengers to keep it held in place if things got fast and bumpy. So I’m probably scrutinizing something that is already such a far cry better than anything I did previously, and I still had the greatest experiences of my life in Africa even on the cheap/rustic side of things.

And I’m definitely not a huge drinker, and yes I’m a three day visit can’t imagine wanting enough alcohol to have it make a big difference. It was more so I didn’t want to feel like if we are feeling boozy or celebratory that it was going to be problematic or having to stop what we are doing and ring up a tab for a simple glass of champs, or if you are at a sundowner and want a second drink and have it be an issue because they only afford you to have one. I don’t mind paying, I would just hope it’s the type of thing where if we ask for it it’s not overly scrutinized or problematic. It’s a vacation.

You will have a wonderful time. Even the "cheap" lodges bend over backwards to meet your every whim!!

The assumption that paying more means you get more is often the actuality but not always. Our most expensive safari lodge stay ($7k OZ for 3 nights ) was in the Okavango Delta & was the worst experience of all of our safaris in terms of the quality of the guiding, game drives & viewing.
