Fishing The Dry Tortuga’s Aboard Sea Trek Fishing – Mid Summer Report

We’re deep into the dog days of summer here in Southwest Florida. That means flat calm seas hundreds of miles out into the gulf (minus the summer squalls). I recently had an opportunity to serve as a relief Captain aboard the Fort Myers Beach head boat, Sea Trek. They often head one hundred miles plus towards the south to fish the bountiful waters near Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas.

It was only a day after the June full moon, which usually spells for tough fishing conditions during the day. As we steamed south close to 120 miles, the crew was able to hook up on multiple large Bonita on the troll as we headed south. Besides a few thick patches of flying fish near the surface, the trolling bite was pretty slow.

We arrived at the fishing grounds around 7 pm and were excited to get our baits into the water. Unfortunately, the bite was very slow and we made several moves through the night, working a variety of live bottom and wrecks, but never really found a hot bite as the full moon rose above the horizon and made it’s way across the sky. The entire crew of 17 fished hard through the night, but alas, the bite was slow.

Tropical waves are waking up in the Atlantic

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The tropical wave train is revving up in the Main Development Region.

The MDR is the typical formation point for major hurricanes, especially during the peak of hurricane season.

Thunderstorm complexes form over West Africa and are pushed over the Atlantic, interacting with the tropical environment.

Depending on favorable conditions like warm sea surface temperatures, or unfavorable conditions like ample Saharan Dust and strong winds, the storms can either strengthen into tropical systems or remain tropical waves.

Storm formation in this region is rare in June. We typically see storms forming closer to home in the Gulf of Mexico, the western Caribbean, and off the east coast of the US.

The Saharan Air Layer activity typically ramps up in mid-June until mid-August, suppressing tropical formation due to the warm, dry, and high wind shear conditions it is associated with. This keeps activity in the MDR to a minimum.

A large plume of dust is moving across the Atlantic this week, but tropical waves are still succeeding in their trek westward despite the somewhat unfavorable conditions.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring one of these robust waves for a low chance of development at the end of the week as it moves westwards across the Caribbean.

Models hint at another wave originating from the coast of Africa attempting to organize as it traverses the MDR this week.

Development in the eastern and central MDR becomes more frequent in July but remains the less common area for tropical systems to form.

Most points of formation for July are near the Lesser Antilles, the Gulf of Mexico, and the US East Coast.

During the active hurricane seasons of 2020 and 2021, four storms formed in the MDR during June and July. This is compared to the quieter years of 2022 and 2023, which only saw one storm form in the MDR from June through July.

According to the Hurricane Research Division of NOAA, there is a strong association with tropical activity for the rest of the year when one looks only at the June to July Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes that form in the MDR, as opposed to all of the named storms that form in June and July which finds little correlation.

Data shows that seasons with storms that form in this region during June and July have been at least average and often above average, with data from 1944 to 1999.

NOAA uses early season storm formation in this area to issue their seasonal forecast update in August.

The forecasts for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season from NOAA call for an extremely active hurricane season, mainly due to the flip from El Nino to La Nina, which results in a lower wind shear environment over the Caribbean. The anomalously warm SSTs also contribute to the above-normal predictions.

The first storm of the season Alberto formed on June 19 in the Gulf of Mexico. The average for the first named storm is June 20. The second storm of the season forms by July 17 on average. The next name on the list is Beryl.
