With Adelaide being the first stop on the Australian leg of GLORIA the tour, it’s only fitting that the tour is launched in South Australia where Sam has been enjoying some of the state's best tourism experiences over the past few days.  Sam’s upcoming 13-track album, Gloria, will be their boldest statement yet and comes off the back of the huge success of the ARIA #1 single, ‘ Unholy ’ featuring Kim Petras. The smash hit is currently back at #1 on the ARIA singles chart this week, giving it five non-consecutive weeks at the top and has surpassed 1.3 billion streams globally with 36 million streams in Australia alone. “It feels like emotional, sexual and spiritual liberation” declares the most confident and creatively fulfilled version of Sam Smith the world has yet encountered.  “It feels like I’ve got my faith back, in my job.  So it was beautiful, with this album, to sing freely again, for me.  It feels like a coming of age”. Where Gloria is a pop album of sorts, it’s also progressive pop-art, from a pioneering, defiant, state-of-the-art pop star to be proud of.  “There is craftsmanship in what I do, and truth and real expression”, says Sam. “My diva album? I think so! I’ve finally let my Gloria out.” Since their No.1 debut album  In The Lonely Hour  (2014), Smith has amassed a constellation of glittering achievements: 36 million albums sold (including 1 million album sales in Australia across entire catalogue), 250 million singles, 49 billion multi-platform streams (1.19 billion total combined stream in Australia), four Grammys, three BRITs, six MOBOs, a Golden Globe, one Oscar, two No.1 albums, five No.1 singles, two No.1 singles as featured vocalist on club bangers from Naughty Boy (‘ La La La ’, 2013) and Calvin Harris (‘ Promises ’, alongside Jessie Reyez, 2018). Logic ’, ‘ Love Goes ’, ‘ To Die For ’ and ‘ Unholy ’ with Kim Petras. With the release of Gloria, the new album and GLORIA the tour, it’s going to be an unstoppable 2023 for Sam.  Don’t miss Sam Smith live this October and November.  Tickets via:  https://www.frontiertouring.com/samsmith and November.

11th November 2023 Spark Arena, Auckland, New Zealand.

Review by Sarah Kidd . Photography by Doug Peters .

It’s Saturday night, the weather is stunning, and Tāmaki Makaurau almost seems to shimmer as thousands of attendees make their way towards Spark Arena to witness the incomparable Sam Smith on the final show this year of their Gloria tour.

Laying the foundations of what would be a sumptuous night of honesty, humility and human expression, Australian singer songwriter Meg Mac had the prestigious honour of opening the night. And what an act to begin with.

Dressed in an oversized suit jacket, her two back-up singers (Hannah her sister and Danielle who is almost “like her sister”) coordinating their outfits along with her, and the dutiful Harry on keys, Meg Mac delivered a set that was strikingly powerful.

Opening with ‘Every Lie’, Mac immediately proved why she was worthy of being chosen as the support act; her sultry and effortless vocal style, ensuring that focus remained on her throughout her set.

The harmonies between the three women were superb, ‘Maybe It’s my First Time’ delivering a far more upbeat and bluesy feel, tambourines layered in throughout the melody. Speaking of how the next track ‘Letter’ was about a piece of correspondence that Mac should have written a long time ago, and maybe the day would come when they finally will, it was obvious that Mac wrote from the heart.

Mac’s cover of the Bill Withers track ‘Grandma’s Hands’ was wonderfully spiritual, and as she finished with ‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’ and phone lights lit up around the room, it was obvious to see that Mac had quickly captured more than just a few new admirers.

As the arena plunged into darkness for the second time in the evening, screams of delightful anticipation pierced the air, New Zealand fans never ones to shy away from vocalising their excitement and appreciation of what they are about to witness.

A figure in gold soon emerged and gracefully strode across the stage, approaching what appeared to be a large satin cloud shape laid across the floor. With a single movement of the arm, that cloud was magically drawn away to reveal a phenomenal gold Aphrodite in repose, the four-piece band and three back up singers entering and taking up position before Sam Smith strode out in a satin ensemble with a diamante encrusted Ed Marler corset suspended from their shoulders.

Opening with ‘Stay with Me’, Smith enraptured the audience, their vocals strong and pure, their immediate connection with the people in the room intoxicating as they smiled, waved and winked at the front rows before them. As old favourites, ‘I’m Not the Only One’ and ‘Like I Can’ serenaded the crowd, Smith took the time to candidly speak of how New Zealand has always been their favourite country to visit since first coming here at the tender age of twenty-one and that their appreciation of the aroha they have always felt was something they held dear.

Encouraging everyone to have fun, to dance and to possibly get naked should they so feel like it (tongue firmly planted in cheek), Smith spoke of how heartbreak and loss was something that everybody would experience, but that no matter how much it hurt, one could move forward from it and ‘Too Good at Goodbyes’ brought more than a few tears as voices raised in unison to sing the poignant lyrics.

While this opening quartet of songs already showed just why Smith is at the top of their game, nothing would have prepared anyone present for the sheer unadulterated freedom of expression that was soon to come.

Gloria is a show split into three acts entitled Love, Beauty and Sex, and that is exactly what was delivered; the evening divided into both an artfully and thoughtfully choreographed journey that Smith has embarked on both musically and personally.

The first act LOVE included tracks such as ‘Diamonds’, ‘How Do You Sleep?’ and the moving ‘Dancing with a Stranger’ the trials and tribulations of that glorious and at times devastating emotion that is the deep affection for another human soul captured within the lyricism.

Smith, an ever present and engaged performer of course taking moments to pause and address the audience, their humour and spirit punctuating the set with small anecdotes and tinges of humour as they lamented how gorgeous they looked but how hot they were or how this last show was number sixty-nine of the year and how “fitting” that seemed.

The second act of BEAUTY opened with a breathtaking cover of Des’ree’s ‘Kissing You’, Smith making it their own and displaying some true vocal prowess, their jaw dropping Christian Cowan dress that looked like molten silver poured over a bed of white taffeta heavenly.

Costume changes are something that feature heavily throughout the show, and embodied the themes of the songs perfectly, the ever-evolving landscape of both Smiths life and personality as they discover who they are and how they fit into this world proclaimed in the clothing itself.

The second act ushered in a shift in tone as dancers soon joined the stage and Smith moved from anthemic declarations of adoration such as ‘Lay Me Down’ into the uninhibited territory of wants and desires with ‘Gimme’, their troupe of aforementioned dancers soon burning up the stage as they grinded against each other and Smith themselves.

While the Gloria tour has indeed incurred much clutching of pearls and accusations of vulgarity from some, what they have failed to recognise is that everything that is both shown and sung about is exactly what it is to be a human. Love, lust, wants and desires; the physicality of the human form and how each of us chooses to use it when in the company of another is both unique and shared simultaneously.

Smith is merely encouraging one and all to express themselves however they see fit, through their words, their movements and their physical representation of themselves. This is not an ideology to be shunned, rather one that should be celebrated. And celebrate it the kiwis did.

By the third act of SEX, Smith’s fans were ecstatic, this tour has been talked about and seen through the world of social media by millions, but to experience it live was something else altogether.

Smith’s reverent entrance to title track ‘Gloria’ saw them draped in transparent cloth that made them appear to have stepped straight from heavens gate, before they were stripped down to fishnets and burlesque style sequinned crosses adorned on their chest as they delivered a cover of Madonna’s ‘Human Nature’ that left the audience gasping for breath, Smith at one point gloriously grabbing their own tummy and shaking it comically.

The finale of ‘Unholy’ unsurprisingly brought the arena to its knees, Smith’s dancers laying it all on the line as Smith themselves wielded a bedazzled pitchfork and top hat while singing about the infidelity of a man that has left his kids at home.

The Gloria tour is truly a declaration of human emotion and the freedom to be exactly who one is, whatever that may be. For are we not always evolving within the landscape of our own world?

If not, we should be.

After the Melbourne and Sydney stops of ‘GLORIA the tour’ promptly sold out after tickets went on sale this morning, Smith has added a new date each at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena and Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena for November 1 and November 4, respectively.

These join five previously arena shows in October and November in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland. Tickets for the first batch of shows are on sale now, while tickets for the new shows go on sale at 1pm today (January 18).

“Both countries hold such a special place in my heart, and we’re working hard on delivering an incredible show for you all,” they continued. “I can’t wait for you to see it and be with you all again soon.”

Prior to this month, Smith’s last time performing in Australia was in 2020 for an exclusive performance as part of that year’s Sydney Mardi Gras . Their last tour of the country took place back in November 2018.

‘Unholy’ was one of the most successful singles of 2022, topping the charts in 20 countries – including Australia and New Zealand. The song also saw Smith and Petras set a unique  Billboard record , with the pair becoming the first openly non-binary and transgender artists, respectively, to have hit number one on the Billboard  Hot 100.

“It has been magical in every way to make this piece of music and by giving this record to you I am giving you part of my heart and soul,” Smith said when announcing the album last year . “‘Gloria’ got me through some dark times and was a beacon for me in my life. I hope it can be that for you.”

Sam Smith, 2017

Sam Smith will return to Australia and New Zealand later this year for a five-date arena tour.

Just hours out from his sold-out performance at the Sydney Opera House, the English singer and concert promoter Frontier Touring announced a set of concerts this November in support of Smith’s sophomore album, The Thrill Of It All.

The Australasian leg of his  The Thrill Of It All World Tour will start Nov. 2 at Auckland’s Spark Arena, then roll into Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and wrap up Nov. 20 at Perth Arena. The general ticket onsale starts next Monday (Jan. 22), with pre-sales starting from this Wednesday (Jan. 17).

“So happy and excited to announce a tour in one of my favourite countries,” Smith tweeted Monday.

Australia x So happy and excited to announce a tour in one of my favourite countries! Tickets go on sale on Monday 22nd at 2pm local. See you soon S x pic.twitter.com/GuxD4ZWouU — Sam Smith (@samsmithworld) January 14, 2018

Smith’s tour will be his first in Australia and New Zealand since his eventful trek in April 2015, which was cut short when the singer was sidelined with a vocal cord hemorrhage which required surgery and rest.

The Brit fully recovered and last November released The Thrill Of It All, which debuted at the top of the charts in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand and at No. 2 on the ARIA Album Chart, and has already earned more than 2.1 million album sales worldwide, according to reps.

This concert was absolutely amazing! His voice was so angelic and he was so genuine and humble. Every time he smiled it melted my heart because you could tell how grateful he was and how much he loves his life and it was just so beautiful! Everyone was there to just have a good time and everyone was singing along and it was such an incredible environment. One of the best moments was when someone from the crowd threw a rainbow flag on the stage during his song “HIM” and he took it a waved it around while everyone cheered in support of gay rights, it was so amazing. He is so inspiring and honestly my favorite artist. This was hands down the best concert I’ve ever been to, and I never wanted it to end. One of the best nights of my life.

One of the best shows I’ve ever been to, so emotional and it still a happy show. When he played we could feel everything he was singing about, we felt his emotions. The whole concert was amazing, the opening show (Lewis Capaldi) was really good, love his voice and the songs he played. What I loved most about Sam Smith was the simplicity of his concert, there was no need for an elaborated scene, we’re there to see him and his singing, not a big show with a lot of dancing and decorations (not saying concerts who have that are bad, I actually really like them, what I mean is that he doesn’t need that to be great). Also, the decorations were so cool and amazing, and his speeches were simply beautiful and powerful LOVE IS LOVE!❤️

Everything about the show was amazing, ypu touch everyone in the auditorium. The songs you decided to sing were excellent and the feeling you put to every song you showed it in your eyes. After every song you smiled to the public and that made us more excited to be there and sometimes put tiers of excitement in our eyes. We could all related to your songs in different ways. You are an inspiration to me. I'm so happy I got the opportunity to see you after the show and get your autograph in my ticket and sweatshirt. That night it's going to be unforgettable for every person that was there that night and the night before. Hope I have the opportunity to see you again here in Mexico City.
