En general, un buen viaje con buena información adicional interesante. La laguna fue hermoso y recomendaría este recorrido. Solo que la última parada en el lago pienso que fue innecesaria, por lo tanto 4.5

Salinas Lake Arequipa

The Salinas tour is highly recommended as it is a salt lagoon and a salt flat unique in Peru , a visit is an unforgettable experience when you come to Arequipa.

This tour is well known by tourists visiting Arequipa, unfortunately there is a big problem of misinformation. Many people confuse the Salinas lagoon with the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National / The difference is very simple, the Salinas lake is a tourist attraction in the national reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca , a very important fact to clarify is that the lagoon from Salinas located in the south side of Salinas and Aguada Blanca national park, and we take a dirt road to visit it, which is not the way going to Chivay (Colca Canyon) when we go to Colca canyon, we pass the north side on a paved road. Then when you do the Salinas tour, you will also visit the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, but on the south side, behind the Picchu Picchu Volcano, and we will not take the road that runs on the north side that is behind the Chachani- volcano.

Visiting the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve

A white car driving along a dirt road through the barren Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve.

The road from Arequipa to Colca Canyon travels through the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve (officially known as La Reserva Nacional Salinas y Aguada Blanca ) in Peru. It is one of the underrated, yet spectacular destinations in the region, providing vistas of volcanoes, lagoons, wetlands, and unique flora and fauna that thrive in the extremely high elevation environment.

Overview Attractions Things to Do How to Visit Getting There Start Planning

Located northeast of Arequipa and en route to Lake Titicaca , the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve was created in 1979 to conserve the natural resources and landscapes of this zone. It is a stunning example of the arid Puna environment. The reserve extends over an area of 367,000 hectares and hosts an array of enchanting sights such as lagoons, volcanoes, wetlands, dotted with pre-Inca ruins, and unique wildlife.

A map of Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve visitor sites, volcanoes, lakes and location.

Read more about the highlights, visitor sites, and volcanoes indicated on the map in the Attractions and Things to Do sections below.

Elevations around the reserve range between 9,200 ft and 19,850 ft (2,800 m and 6,050 m). Most attractions are situated around 14,100 ft (4,300 m). For reference, this is much higher than Arequipa (7,660 ft | 2,335 m) along with the elevation of Cusco (11,155 ft | 3,400 m) and Machu Picchu (7,970 ft | 2,430 m).

Those who intend to extend their visit to the reserve should make sure to be acclimated before attempting any strenuous activity. Read about how to avoid altitude sickness .

The reserve experiences consistently cold weather throughout the year. Average temperatures range between 36°F (2°C) and 46°F (8°C), with drastic drops in temperature at night.

From October to April, high winds called heladas come in from the Bolivian altiplano to the east, bringing rain, snow, and hail, and temperatures down to -20°C (4°F).

The rainy season is from January to March. The dry season from April to December is the best time to visit for ideal road and weather conditions.

Attractions

Tambo de Cañahuas, 46 mi (75 km) from Arequipa, is the main checkpoint for visitors to the reserve. Around 1,800 vicuñas inhabit the Pampas Cañahuas highlands. During an event called Chaccu , the wild vicuña herds are captured, clipped of their wool, and released. This event provides an alternative to hunters who would otherwise kill the vicuñas for their valuable wool. Approximately 40 lb (18 kg) of wool is collected during the Chaccu.

Four wild vicuñas walk through Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve with a volcano behind.

Toqra Interpretation Center

The Toqra Interpretation Center ( Centro de Interpretacion de Toqra in Spanish) is in Patahuasi. Photographs and scale models at the center show the diverse landscapes of the reserve and the various wild animals and plants that inhabit it. The center also documents the cultural activities of native communities and the history of ancient cultures who have resided here. Outside the center, there is a lookout point with incredible vistas.

Sumbay Cave Paintings

The cave paintings at Sumbay are between 6,000 and 8,000 years old. Discovered in 1968 on the backside of Misti Volcano, 55 mi (88 km) from Arequipa at 13,450 ft (4,100 m) above sea level. There are approximately 500 animal figures, including camelids, felines, and Ñandúes, as well as human figures holding weapons or appearing to dance. Archaeologists have also found pre-ceramic artifacts in the vicinity. The caves are part of the Sumbay rock forest and formed from the erosion of volcanic material. Members of the adjacent Sumbay community are in charge of guiding travelers to the caves.

Salinas Lake

Salinas Lake, or Laguna de Salinas in Spanish is home to a vast number of bird species. The lake sits at 14,110 ft (4,300 m) of elevation and spans over 6,000 hectares. The lake is one of the only places where you can see all three species of highland flamingos – Andean, Chilean, and James’s – as they forage for food in the shallow waters. During the dry season, the water evaporates and leaves behind deposits of sodium chloride that is mined by residents of nearby communities.

Abra de Patapampa

The mountain pass at Patapampa is the most breathtaking of the national reserve destinations. Located at 16,110 ft (4,910 m) above sea level, from here, the road begins its 3,940-feet (1,200-meter) descent into the Colca Valley. Mountain biking tours frequently start here and continue to Chivay. Andean saleswomen gather here to sell various crafts to travelers who stop to appreciate the views.

Salinas Huito

Salinas Huito is one of the checkpoints for entry to the Aguada Blanca National Reserve about 2.5 hours (37 mi, or 60 km) from Arequipa. Most of the town residents work as miners at Salinas Lake, extracting salt from family-owned parcels. In recent decades, workers have mined the lagoon for boron, which is then sold to the private company Inkalabor.

Chiguata District

On the road between Arequipa and Salinas Lake, Chiguata was once the principal route to access the Misti and Picchu Picchu Volcanoes. Today, the small town of cobblestoned streets preserves traditional stone and adobe houses with straw roofs. Surrounding it are gorgeous terraces and various attractions, including pre-Inca and Inca ruins, petroglyphs, waterfalls, and a small forest of queñua trees. Located 19 mi (30 km) southeast from Arequipa, the Chiguata District sits at an elevation of 9,680 ft (2,950 m) above sea level and experiences cold weather all year.

Standing like guards at the entrance to the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, the volcanoes Misti and Chachani flank the main road between Arequipa and Colca Canyon. The volcanic peaks are preludes to the wonders that await further into the reserve. Adventurous, altitude-ready travelers can climb either one of these and a few others in the vicinity. Venerated as apus (mountain spirits) by pre-Inca and Inca cultures as well as by some Peruvians today, the peaks are also sites of ancient burials.

Misti (19,098 ft | 5,821 m) is known for its seasonally snow-capped, perfectly symmetrical cone. Six Inca mummies were found in the crater and now stored at the Museo Santuarios Andinos in Arequipa.

Chachani (19,931 ft | 6,075 m) is the highest mountain near Arequipa.

Other climbable volcanoes near the reserve:

Ubinas (18,609 ft | 5,672 m) is the most active volcano in Peru, sending up small explosions and frequent ash plumes as recently as 2019. The volcano is on the southeastern border of the reserve.

Coropuna (21,079 ft | 6,425 m) is the largest and highest volcano in Peru, considered to be the site of a significant pre-Columbian temple. Archaeologists have found an Inca trail going up to 18,045 ft (5,500 m), where it disappears under glacial ice.

Solimana (19,990 ft | 6,093 m), also spelled Sulimana , is one of the highest peaks near Coropuna. The volcano can be visited en route to Cotahuasi Canyon .

Ampato (20,630 ft | 6,288 m) is the snow-capped peak where the famous Inca Ice Maiden was discovered in 1995.

Picchu Picchu (18,580 ft | 5,665 m) is an inactive volcano near Arequipa.

Things to Do

Bird watching.

The reserve brims with unique fauna, but bird watchers especially are in for a real treat while exploring the reserve. The wetlands, called bofedales in Spanish, are home to 44 species of aquatic birds, including 3 species of flamingo, whose population can swell up to 25,000 during the wet season. Other birds include Andean geese, crested ducks, and giant hummingbirds. The Bofedales Pampa Toqra, on the road between Arequipa and Colca, is a popular place to stop.

Read more about birding in Peru .

Spot Native Fauna and Flora

It looks and feels like a different world at 12,000 ft (3,660 m) above sea level. Sit back in the comfort of your car seat, but keep your eyes open for the rare plants and animals that inhabit this extreme environment.

At Laguna de Salinas, see flocks of parihuana or Andean flamingo . The white chests and vermillion wings of these birds are said to be the inspiration for the Peruvian flag colors. The rolling pampas of the Puna are also inhabited by the guanaco , the largest wild Andean camelid, and the taruca (Andean deer) which is recovering from near extinction.

At the highest areas of the reserve, observe the green yareta , a low dome-shaped shrub that only grows at high elevations.

Downhill Biking in Salinas and Aguada Blanca

Tour operators can organize mountain biking tours. Possible routes:

  • around Salinas Lagoon and descend to Arequipa
  • from Chachani downhill to Arequipa
  • start near Patapampa Pass and descent to Chivay and Colca Canyon

At high elevation, cold temperatures and the lack of oxygen can take their toll. Full-finger gloves and a windbreaker can ease discomfort. Your guide should carry oxygen in case of an emergency. Contact us to book an exciting bike excursion with a reputable adventure tour operator.

Climb Volcanic Peaks

Arequipa is located directly over one of the tectonic fractures that have created the Andes over millennia. In between the city and Colca Canyon, there is no shortage of mountains to climb. Misti and Chachani are favorites for their proximity to Arequipa. Coropuna is also popular as the highest of the 21 volcanoes in Peru. There are dozens more nearby worth exploring!

How to Visit

Many travelers on a tour transit through the reserve quickly while traveling between Arequipa and Colca Canyon. Departing from Arequipa, it takes three hours to reach the town of Chivay in Colca Valley and around four hours to get to other places further in the canyon. Generally, tours make a few stops in the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, which serves a dual purpose; it breaks up the drive time and is a short and sweet introduction to a few of the reserve’s attractions.

From Arequipa, the journey to Colca Canyon begins with a drive northeast towards the volcanoes Chachani and Misti. After about two hours, Pampa Cañahuas is a common tour stop to observe wild vicunas grazing in the open plains. Next, take a small break to enjoy a cup of traditional, altitude-relieving mate de coca tea. The final stop at the Patapampa overlook gives you time to snap photos of the landscape.

If you plan to spend more time exploring the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, then look into an outdoor excursion like summiting a volcano or biking.

Overnight accommodation is limited to camping within the national reserve. There are also a variety of comfortable Arequipa hotels and Colca Canyon hotels to base your stay and explore the reserve to your heart’s content by day.

Getting There

Arequipa to salinas and aguada blanca.

The majority of travelers briefly visit attractions within the reserve on a guided tour in transit to Colca Canyon. Independent travelers that set out to do a Colca Canyon trek or experience other canyon highlights can also book a bus tour that also stops at various points in Salinas and Aguada.

Many parts of the national reserve are so isolated that there is no cell reception. Therefore, you will need to hire private transport or rent a car if you want to explore Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve more in-depth and on your timeline. Please read our guide about car rentals in Peru before making your reservation.

Northern Access to Salinas and Aguada Blanca Reserve The typical route from Arequipa to Colca transits through the northern edge of the reserve. There is a checkpoint at Cañahuas.

Southern Access to Salinas and Aguada Blanca Reserve The southern road from Arequipa to Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve goes directly to the Laguna de Salinas and other attractions in the southern and eastern sections of the reserve. There is a checkpoint at Salinas Huito.

Laguna de Salinas

Arequipa & Canyon Country

This salt lake 4300m above sea level becomes a white salt flat during the dry months of May to December. Its size and the amount of water in it vary each year depending on the weather. During the rainy season (January to May), it's a good place to see all three flamingo species found in Peru, as well as myriad other Andean waterbirds. It's located east of Arequipa below Pichu Pichu and El Misti.

Buses to Ubinas (S15, 3½ hours) pass by the lake and can be caught on Av Sepulveda in Arequipa, or from the corner of Jesús and Industrial Cayro in Arequipa at 4am from the Ana Express office. A small ticket booth on Av Sepulveda sells tickets, and schedules vary so it is a good idea to inquire a day before you wish to go. You can hike around the lake, which can take about two days, then return on the packed daily afternoon buses at around 3pm (expect to stand) or try to catch a lift with workers from the nearby mine. One-day minibus tours from Arequipa cost about S150 per person; mountain-biking tours are also available.

SALINAS & AGUADA BLANCA RESERVE - SALT FLATS DAY TRIP FROM AREQUIPA

SALINAS & AGUADA BLANCA RESERVE - SALT FLATS DAY TRIP FROM AREQUIPA

If gorgeous Andean landscapes are enough to bring a tear to your eye, then Salinas & Aguada Blanca Reserve will see you weeping. We'll start this tour in the charming city of Arequipa , weaving on to the likes of the Andes mountain range, Mt. Misti & Mt. Chachani, before finally landing amongst the spectacular views of Salinas Salt Flats. Sign yourself up to this unique adventure opportunity that lies just out of Arequipa and takes a mere day.

Salinas y Aguada Blanca Arequipa

Welcome to the day of what might just be the best day you could possibly have while in the Arequipa region (yes, over the Colca Canyon!).

We head out of the city to visit the quaint village of Chiguata, its colonial remnants set against a magnificent backdrop of the snowy (in winter) peaks of Mt. Misti.

We continue on to Salinas & Aguada Blanca National Reserve, Arequipa’s best kept secret, where we plan to visit the undiscovered Salt Desert (yes, that’s right, we have salt flats as well). After a short break for snacks, we climb higher making our way over a high pass (~4000m) providing wonderful views of the Andes mountains and Alpine meadows with typical Andean wildlife.

We will have the opportunity to do a relatively short but demanding high-altitude hike to experience the great outdoors first hand. This afternoon It's time to fully immerse yourself in the Salinas Salt Flats with the whole place to yourself way away from the crowds.

Put sunglasses on and play around to get the perfect - fun - deep-perspective photograph. Weather-permitting, we may be able to soak the medicinal powers of a natural hot spring pool before making our way back to Arequipa.

Arrive back in downtown where this trip ends. We wish you all a fond salute and bon voyage. We hope we'll be seeing you again soon.

Salinas Lagoon: discover the beautiful salt flat that Arequipa hides

Salinas Lagoon: discover the beautiful salt flat that Arequipa hides

Arequipa is a department of many surprises and the Laguna de Salinas is a place that no traveler can miss. This wonderful salt lake is part of the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve and attracts many tourists. Ready to visit it? Quiet!

The Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve covers an area of approximately 366,936 hectares, was considered a National Reserve since 1979 and is located in the Arequipa region and part of Moquegua; at a height that ranges between 3,500 to 6,050 meters above sea level. The name that the reserve bears has its cause in the presence of the Laguna de las Salinas and the Aguada Blanca pampa that are included in its territory.

Within this National Reserve it is important to find at least 70 different types of birds, among which it is worth mentioning the presence of the parihuanas, both the common flamingo and the Andean parihuana or also the Parihuana de James. In this reserve you can also find the Andean condor, which is considered the largest flying bird in the world. It is important among the bird species that are in danger or at risk of extinction, in addition to the condor and the Andean flamingo mentioned: the suri, which is a species of Andean ostrich.

The reserve is also important because of the presence of the Mauka stone forest, which has become a natural habitat for the country's viscachas. Different species of mammals are also important within the National Reserve, 24 in total that inhabit this area and among which the alpaca, the vicuña, as well as endangered animals such as the guanaco and the taruca, stand out. There are other types of animals such as amphibians, reptiles and fish, which together with the above give an average of 185 different vertebrate animal species.

In addition to the aforementioned animals in danger, there are also among them the Peruvian logirostro bat, an endemic animal of the area and that is classified as critically endangered. The Andean cat is also another animal that is in a situation of danger to the same degree as the guanaco, the mantaco and the white-tailed muleteer. The site also houses five animal species in the vulnerable category and 10 in the near-threatened state.

It is located at 4300 m.a.s.l. on the south side of the National Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca, in the Peasant Community of Salinas Huito, in the district of San Juan de Tarucani, province of Arequipa, Peruvian territory.

Description

It is an endorheic lagoon of shallow waters (shallow) in which borate and other compounds are deposited that give it that whitish color.

It is the preferred place for bird watchers, since there are an infinity of endemic and migratory birds, especially the three varieties of South American flamingos (common, Andean and James).

It is visited by carriageway, between the Misti and the Pichu Pichu, (Chiguata Route), approximately 3 to 4 hours from the city of Arequipa.

The landscape is impressive, you can see flora (such as queñua and yareta), and high Andean fauna: vizcachas, tarucas, South American camelids such as vicuñas, llamas and alpacas; high Andean birds such as: guayatas or Andean goose, Andean ducks, among others.

In addition, you can see the Misti and Ubinas volcanoes, the latter in an eruptive state.

Discover more about the Salinas Lagoon

The Laguna de Salinas is located in the department of Arequipa and is within the National Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca. It has an area of 354 hectares where nature is present at all times, being a real show for visitors.

When it was discovered, the importance of the Laguna de Salinas rested on the vicuñas and their protection. However, the ecosystem of this space soon represented something more valuable, especially the salt lake for which it is so well known today. Finally, in 1979 this natural space was created through Supreme Decree Number 070-79-AA.

When you visit the Laguna de Salinas you will find a space ordered by a network of paths that, among their different reasons, allow the protection of the area. On these paths, you will have the opportunity to see all the attractions that surround the Salinas Lagoon, admire the natural landscapes and feel part of the ecosystem.

What to see in the Salinas Lagoon?

In the Laguna de Salinas there is much to discover. It is known that tourists who visit this place are amazed by the abundant nature. For example, whoever goes to the Laguna de Salinas will find the Huarancante and Chuccura snow-capped mountains, which are impressive due to their beauty. The view of these two mountains is spectacular and many take the opportunity to take photos.

The Laguna de Salinas is a great natural paradise, experts say so and its bofedales (wetlands) and lagoons prove it. Walking through this place, you will find the Chalaque and Turca rivers, whose waters are calm and fed by the previous ones.

When touring this tourist attraction, you can glimpse small hot springs. Without a doubt, in the Laguna de Salinas there are different natural attractions that captivate anyone.

The show continues thanks to its fauna. Different types of animals live in the Laguna de Salinas, the most popular being the flamingo. Here you can see many types of flamingos, among which are the common, the James and the Andean.

In addition, the Laguna de Salinas is a place of passage for more than 20,000 types of migratory birds such as the Tringa flavipes, the Calidris fuscicollis or the Phalaropus tricolor.

How to get to the Salinas Lagoon?

Getting to the lagoon is very simple. If you are in the capital, the first thing to do is look for a bus that goes to Arequipa. There are many safe, reliable companies at a very good price. The trip lasts approximately 15 hours, so you must take the necessary precautions.

Once in Arequipa the adventure begins. There are different ways to get to Laguna de Salinas, in redBus we show you the 3 fastest. The first is taking a taxi from the Plaza de Armas in Arequipa, you pay between S/40 and S/60 soles, approximately. Another option is hiring a car from a company, family member or acquaintance. And finally, and the one that most visitors choose, hire a tour that allows you to freely enjoy with family or friends.

The route from the city to the lagoon is approximately 3 hours, and on the way you will be able to appreciate beautiful landscapes and take excellent photographs of the flora and fauna of Arequipa.

Climate in the Salinas Lagoon

Due to the height at which it is located (approximately 4,300 meters above sea level), the Salinas Lagoon is a tourist attraction with a very cold climate. In fact, at night the temperature can drop to minus 20°C, making it impossible to visit during this time of day. The rain is also very present in the Laguna de Salinas, therefore, if you want to avoid it, it is advisable to go between the months of January and March.

What else can you see in Arequipa?

No one should be left wanting to get to know all of Arequipa. Therefore, if you are already in the department, here we show you other tourist options in addition to the Salinas Lagoon. Let the tour begin!

A great place to visit, essential on the trip to Arequipa, is the Colca Canyon. With a depth of 4,160 meters, it is one of the deepest canyons in the world. It is perfect to forget about obligations and clear your mind by connecting with nature.

Of course, every traveler must be careful because the Colca is located at a great height, so it is always recommended to take some medicine to avoid any inconvenience. An activity that cannot be missed is the sighting of the condor, the vizcacha or the puma.

In Arequipa there is also the Misti Volcano, known by all Peruvians. At 5,822 meters above sea level, it is very easily accessible, so any interested traveler can schedule a trekking route here, but keep in mind that the volcano is active. The 1998 expeditions found skeletons here, so it is believed that it was a place where human sacrifices were made.

For lovers of history and architecture, there is the Santa Catalina Monastery, one of the main tourist attractions in this department. It is a monastery built in pink and white ashlar, it has large patios, gardens and small squares.

It was inaugurated in 1970 with the aim of educating the daughters of the wealthiest families and, today, it is known that more than 300 women entered it during the 18th century.

  • The lagoon is part of the National Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca, which was established in 1979.
  • La Laguna de Salinas has been part of the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance since 2003.
  • La Laguna de Salinas is approximately 4,300 meters above sea level. Travelers who are not used to the altitude are recommended to rest one or two days in the city before leaving for Laguna de Salinas, this will help them acclimatize. It is also good to take pills for altitude sickness.
  • Salt is extracted from the Laguna de Salinas, which is then commercialized, this is done by the same inhabitants of the area.

Up close with flamingos, Torrevieja salt lakes train tours

Mandy

MAJESTY, COLOUR, WONDER. They're just some of the words used to describe the beautiful salt lakes of Torrevieja by those who have been lucky enough to visit them. They are a natural jewel in the city's crown.

Less than 3 hours flight time from home, the Spanish salt lakes and the wildlife that inhabit them are absolutely stunning. And locals know an even better secret: the Torrevieja salt lakes possess all the therapeutic qualities of a natural spa.

It is purported that just living within the vicinity can have positive benefits for your health and wellbeing. The vivid bubblegum pink colour of the water in the salt lake has been attributed to a rare type of micro-algae that thrives in exceptionally salty conditions.

The rare halophile algae produce a pink dye to help improve sunlight absorption under the surface of the water.

The vibrant hue of the pink lake is permanent and does not change when the water is poured into a container, and the algae is known for its high concentration of healthy antioxidants and cancer-beating carotenoids, the same naturally occurring pigment that gives salmon its strong and noticeable pink colour.

Torrevieja salt lake tours: discover the pink lake

Salinas de Torrevieja is home to 2,000 flamingos during migratory seasons, and the town hall ensures that this wild habitat remains protected during critical periods to ensure that the magnificent wading birds can enjoy their fleeting season in the sun in complete safety.

The pink salt lake has been commercially farmed for its salt for more than 200 years, and it's a renewable commodity as the Mediterranean Sea water is constantly replenished.

Salt and the city of Torrevieja have always enjoyed a close association, and salt production continues today. The lakes produce more than 600,000 metric tons of salt each year, with the product being shipped to countries throughout Europe.

And Torrevieja's historic salt lake tours detail the history of that connection, with the fascinating attraction running throughout the summer.

The tours set out to educate attendees, highlighting the many uses for salt in the modern world, from pharmaceutical use to generating renewable solar energy.

Torrevieja salt lake tours and flamingos

The tour guide points out the indigenous flora and fauna in the region and explains the reason for the bubblegum-pink water colour.

The lakes are home to an ancient saltwater brine shrimp that positively thrives in rich saline conditions, and also happens to give the lake its salmon-like colour.

Marvel at the flamingos in a naturally beautiful environment

The tour encompasses 3,700 hectares of exotic and unique Mediterranean nature, with a chance to scale one of the salt mountains, many of which reach the size of an office block seven storeys high.

Observe the many rare species of birds that inhabit the lakes, and take in the amazing natural panoramic views.

The flamingos are a popular sight, and successive wet winters over the last few years have been beneficial for these much-loved birds.

The additional freshwater contributed to a lowered level of salinity creating perfect conditions for a reproductive explosion in the brine shrimp that populate the waters.

Torrevieja salt lake tours and flamingos

This led to record numbers of migrating African Greater Flamingos over the spring and summertime in 2021, and the favourable conditions encouraged more than 1,500 breeding pairs of flamingos .

For the first time since 1983, the birds nested in the wetlands and established nurseries, resulting in the sighting of at least 600 baby flamingos.

Torrevieja salt lakes: take the tour at almost any time of year

The tour makes plenty of stops to allow for beautiful photo and selfie opportunities.

Tours use the familiar Spanish road trains that have proven so popular with tourists. These trains offer shade and a pleasant way to enjoy the environmental spectacle.

The Torrevieja salt lakes are a protected and delicate wetland environment that the town hall goes to considerable measures to protect. Therefore bathing in either of the salt lakes is not permitted.

Torrevieja salt lake tours and flamingos

This year, the scheduled tours take place from Tuesday 2nd April 2024, with tours running every day throughout the year.

Tickets cost €9.50 with a one Euro discount for children under 13 years old or people over the age of 65 years, and the tours take just over an hour to complete. A family ticket for two adults and two children (2 to 12 years) costs €29.90.

Trains depart from the Paseo de la Libertad in the centre of Torrevieja (see map below or click here ) at Waldo Calero square every day at 11:00, 12:15, 13:30, 16:30, 17:45, and 19:00 . For more information, visit the official Torrevieja tourism website .
