Safari cake ideas.

If you’re looking for a unique and exciting cake design, a safari-themed cake is an excellent choice. With endless possibilities for decoration and design, you can easily make a cake that is both elegant and fun. In this article, we will explore a wide range of safari cake ideas to help get you started on your next project.

How to make a simple and elegant safari cake

If you are in search of an easy-to-create safari cake design, a simple and elegant cake is an excellent choice. A natural-colored, buttercream-covered cake topped with fondant safari animals is the perfect choice for a subtle but stunning safari cake.

For a unique twist, consider using a marbled fondant technique to create an animal-print effect in the fondant covering. This technique can be used for any cake size and shape.

When it comes to choosing the safari animals to top your cake, consider using a mix of different animals to create a diverse and interesting display. You can use fondant or gum paste to create the animals, and there are many tutorials available online to help you create them.

Another option to add some extra flair to your safari cake is to incorporate edible flowers or foliage into the design. This can be done by using fresh or dried flowers, or by creating them out of fondant or gum paste. Just be sure to research which flowers are safe to use on cakes before adding them to your design.

Safari cake ideas for kids’ birthdays

When it comes to kids’ birthdays, a safari-themed cake is sure to be a hit. Imagine a chocolate cake with green buttercream grass, fondant jungle animals, and a fondant tree. Kids will love the playful design and bright colors.

If you’re feeling ambitious, try adding a waterfall and a pond using blue gel or fondant to complete the jungle scene. This will bring the cake to life and make it look like it came straight out of the wild.

Another fun idea for a safari cake is to create a tiered cake with each tier representing a different part of the jungle. The bottom tier can be decorated with fondant vines and leaves, while the middle tier can feature fondant animals like lions, tigers, and zebras. The top tier can be decorated with a fondant sun and clouds to represent the sky above the jungle.

If you want to make the cake even more interactive, consider adding edible binoculars made from chocolate and fondant. These can be placed on top of the cake or on the sides for a fun and playful touch that kids will love.

How to create a stunning animal print cake

Animal prints are a staple of safari design and make for an eye-catching cake design. You can go for a zebra pattern in black and white or a leopard print in brown and black.

You can create the print pattern using a variety of techniques, such as painting, airbrushing, or even piping buttercream. A fondant or gum paste animal topper can complete the look, making for a cake that is both stylish and wild.

When creating an animal print cake, it’s important to choose the right colors. For example, a zebra print cake can be made more interesting by using shades of gray instead of just black and white. Similarly, a leopard print cake can be made more vibrant by adding pops of orange or yellow.

If you want to take your animal print cake to the next level, consider adding some texture. You can use edible glitter or sanding sugar to create a shimmering effect, or use a textured rolling pin to imprint a pattern onto the fondant or buttercream.

Tips for decorating a safari-themed cake

Decorating a safari-themed cake is all about being creative and having fun. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Use natural colors like greens, browns, and shades of yellow to give your cake a wild feel.
  • Add flowers and foliage made from fondant or gum paste to give your cake a jungle-like appearance
  • Use edible glitter and sprinkles to add some sparkle and shine to your cake.
  • Craft toppers featuring your favorite safari animals or trees to add personality to your cake design.

Another great way to add some excitement to your safari-themed cake is to incorporate different textures. You can use textured fondant or create patterns on your cake using a decorating comb or spatula. You can also add some dimension to your cake by using cut-out fondant shapes to create a 3D effect. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different techniques and designs to make your safari-themed cake truly unique!

Creative jungle-inspired cake designs

There is no shortage of inspiration when it comes to jungle-inspired cake designs. From a half-covered cake with fondant vines and leaves to a fully decked-out cake complete with animatronic jungle animals, there are endless possibilities for creating a unique and charming cake.

You can go for a rustic jungle look or opt for a more polished animal print style. Don’t be afraid to mix and match techniques to make a design that is all your own.

When it comes to flavors, there are also many options to choose from. You can go for a classic chocolate or vanilla cake, or try something more exotic like a coconut or mango flavored cake. Consider incorporating tropical fruits like pineapple or passionfruit into the cake or frosting for an added burst of flavor.

Ideas for incorporating edible animals into your safari cake

If the idea of a cake adorned with lifelike jungle animals excites you, there are plenty of options for incorporating edible animals in your cake design. From fondant elephants, tigers, and monkeys to gum paste or marzipan lions and giraffes, the sky is the limit when it comes to creativity.

If you want an eye-catching centerpiece for your cake, consider making a towering giraffe in fondant or gum paste. The effect can be stunning and add some height to your cake.

Another fun idea is to create a scene on your cake with multiple edible animals. You could have a fondant lion lounging under a gum paste tree while a herd of marzipan elephants graze nearby. This can add a playful and whimsical touch to your cake.

If you want to add some texture to your cake, consider using chocolate shavings or crushed cookies to create a dirt or sand effect. This can be the perfect backdrop for your edible animals and really bring your safari theme to life.

DIY safari cake toppers made from fondant or gum paste

If you’re looking to make a safari-themed cake but don’t have access to pre-made toppers, you can easily make your own using fondant or gum paste. You can make fondant animals by molding the fondant into the desired shape and then painting on details like spots or stripes.

Gum paste is an excellent option if you need a topper that is sturdy enough to stand up. It can be molded, shaped, and sculpted into any shape you like. You can even mix gum paste with fondant to create a pliable, easy-to-work-with material.

When making fondant animals, it’s important to work quickly and keep the fondant covered to prevent it from drying out. You can also add texture to your animals by using tools like toothpicks or small brushes to create fur or scales. Additionally, you can use food coloring to create a variety of colors for your animals, making them more realistic and eye-catching.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try making other safari-themed toppers like trees, rocks, or even a safari jeep. These can be made using a combination of fondant and gum paste, and can add a fun and unique touch to your cake. Just remember to allow enough time for your toppers to dry and harden before placing them on your cake.

Top 10 safari cake design trends of the year

Each year, new safari cake design trends emerge. Some cutting-edge trends for 2021 include:

  • Geode cakes with natural or crystalline gems and stones.
  • Cake pops with animal print patterns or safari animals on top.
  • Fondant and gum paste cacti as decorative elements.
  • Colorful rainbow animal cakes.
  • Glitter-covered cake designs.
  • Animal prints with gold leaf accents.
  • 3D fondant animal shapes as cake toppers.
  • Natural-tone cakes with sugar flower embellishments.
  • Edible gold foil animal silhouettes.
  • Snakeskin fondant cake coverings.

Step-by-step instructions for making a 3D safari cake

A 3D safari cake can be a show-stopper at any event. Here are step-by-step instructions for making your own:

  • Bake your cake in the desired shape, using layered cake or a shaped cake pan
  • Cover the cake with buttercream or fondant to obtain the desired texture of the animal.
  • Mold fondant or gum paste into the desired animal shapes, such as a giraffe or an elephant.
  • Attach the fondant or gum paste sculptures to the cake with edible glue or toothpicks to create a 3D effect.
  • Add final decorations like fondant flowers or trees.

Vegan and gluten-free options for your safari-themed dessert table

Having a safari-themed dessert table doesn’t mean you have to forget about dietary restrictions. Nowadays, there are tons of vegan and gluten-free options that are both delicious and beautiful.

You can opt for vegan cakes made with almond milk or gluten-free cakes made with rice flour. Vegan fondant made with coconut cream and gluten-free gum paste made with potato starch is also available in many shops.

Perfect color combinations for a vibrant, eye-catching safari cake

Colors are an essential aspect of safari cake design. The right choice of color combinations will give your cake a vibrant, eye-catching appeal that will make it stand out.

Bright oranges, yellows, and greens are typical choices for a safari-themed cake. If you want a more subtle effect, try using natural-toned browns, greens, and off-white. Gold, silver, or copper metallic accents can also elevate the design and add a luxurious touch.

How to use edible gold leaf to add luxury to your safari cake design

If you want to add a touch of luxury to your safari cake, consider using edible gold leaf. Edible gold leaf can be applied to fondant, gum paste, or buttercream to create a radiant, shimmering effect on the cake design.

Gold leaf can be used to create borders, stripes, or even highlights on a cake’s surface. It pairs well with natural colors and animal prints to create a luxurious, high-end look.

Tips for transporting your safari cake without damaging the decorations

Transporting a decorated cake can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to a safari-themed cake. Here are a few tips to help ensure that your cake arrives at its destination looking as pristine as when you created it:

  • Use a sturdy cake box or container that is large enough to accommodate the cake and any toppers(like the animal figure) securely.
  • Place non-slip matting underneath the cake to prevent it from sliding around during transportation.
  • Keep your cake cool, and use cold gel packs if necessary to keep it from melting or becoming too soft.
  • Drive slowly and carefully, avoiding any sudden movements or sharp turns that could cause the cake to shift or topple over.
  • Once you arrive at your destination, carefully and slowly remove the cake from the container to prevent any damage to the decorations.

How to make a mini-safari dessert table with matching cupcakes and cookies

If you’re planning a safari-themed event, a mini dessert table is a lovely addition. You can use animal-shaped cookies and cupcakes with animal print liners to create a cohesive look.

A gingham tablecloth and greenery garlands paired with bamboo plates and cups will complete the safari theme. You can mix and match the designs of the cupcakes and cookies to create an even more exciting display. The dessert table can also include a show-stopping safari cake that brings everything together. A small decorated cake is an excellent choice for a mini-dessert table.

With these safari cake ideas, you can create a cake design that turns heads for all the right reasons. Whether you prefer a simple, elegant cake or an elaborate 3D creation, a safari-themed cake is sure to make a statement. Get creative with your design and enjoy the process of bringing your safari cake to life.

What is the difference between cinnamon raisin bread and cinnamon rolls?

safari themed cake and cupcakes

Surprise Inside Safari Cupcakes

I’m obsessed with surprises. There’s nothing like putting a smile on someone’s face because you gave them a surprise that they truly didn’t expect. I also love throwing in that element of surprise when I bake. On the outside, these may seem like ordinary safari cupcakes, but there is an animal print surprise on the inside! These Surprise Inside Safari Cupcakes are guaranteed to be a hit at a kids (or adult!) party! If you love safari animals, check out my Zebra Cake .

Something that really adds a nice touch to these cupcakes are these cupcake wrapper templates. You can print those out here . I’d print them on card stock and put them on at end after the cupcakes are baked.

Instructions:

  • Preheat a moderate oven (175°C/350°F)
  • Make your vanilla cake mix per the packaging instructions.
  • Place two spoonfuls of vanilla cake mix into a small bowl, and add 4 spoonfuls of cake mix into another small bowl.
  • Add black food colouring to that vanilla cake mix well.
  • Place half of your remaining vanilla cake mix to a snap seal bag. Also add your entire brown cake mix into a snap seal bag, and your entire black cake mix into a snap seal bag.
  • Line your cupcake tray with cupcake liners.
  • Cut a fine large tip from your snap seal bag with vanilla cake mix. Pipe about ⅓ of your cupcake liners with vanilla cake mix into 6 of your cupcake liners.
  • With the black cake mix, pipe another layer directly over the brown cake layer design.
  • Pipe your vanilla cake mix with a swirl starting in the center and moving outwards.
  • Repeat the process of creating the bullseye in each of the cupcakes with a black, brown, black bullseye pattern. Then add another vanilla cake layer. Make sure this doesn’t fill over ⅔ of the cake.
  • Add your remaining brown cake mix and add it into your white cake mix. Add orange food colouring and mix well.
  • Spoon a layer of orange cake mix to the bottom of the remaining 6 cupcake liners.
  • Bake in a moderate oven for about 12 minutes.
  • Use a pastry brush to paint orange spots on an unmelted white candy melt. Draw a black ring around the orange. Draw black tiger stripes on unmelted orange candy melts.
  • Wrap your printed animal print card cupcake wrappers, and wrap them around the bottom of the base of your cupcake. Tape where the 2 edges meet.

leopard print cupcakes for safari party themed new years eve

Safari Party Theme Leopard Print Cupcakes

A Safari party theme needs a fabulous treat! How about some delicious spotted leopard print cupcakes!? I served these for our “Into the WILD” New years Party and they were so fun! I know, you're looking at these thinking, “I don't have time to make fancy cupcakes”.

But guess what? YOU DO. These are deceptively easy. They take just a little extra time to put the batter in the tins but that's it. If I can do it, I promise, you can too.

Safari Party Cupcake Ingredients

  • Yellow or white cake mix made according to box
  • Cocoa powder – dutch processed recommended
  • 1/2 capsule activated charcoal or Black food coloring gel
  • Baking Cups or Muffin tins with cupcake liners
  • Plastic piping bags

Mixing Up Batter Colors

Piping chocolate batter onto leopard print cupcakes

After you mix your cake batter scoop 2 cups light cake mix in a separate bowl. Add 3 tsp cocoa powder, dutch processed cocoa is more red in color and will give you the results seen here. This color is the for the main spot. Adjust quantity of cocoa as desired being careful to not get too dark.

Next scoop 3/4 cup of cocoa tinted batter into a separate bowl and stir in 1/2 capsule of activated charcoal , or a toothpick dip of black food coloring gel and mix well. You want this color, the spot outline, to be almost black.

Safari Party Cupcake How To

Layers of cake batter for leopard print cupcakes

Now let's get down to the business of creating these fun little leopard print cupcakes! Fill the bottom of each liner with a few spoonfuls of yellow cake batter. You will be doing THREE layers and don't want to overfill so start off with small amounts.

Add Leopard Print Spots

Spotted cupcakes for a Safari party theme by Salt Lake Party Stylist

Fill one piping bag with the light chocolate batter and another with the black/brown batter. Snip the end off the light chocolate bag, twist the top to prevent leakage and squeeze dots onto the yellow cake batter layer. 3 larger dots are better than the 4 smaller ones from my first batch.

Then snip the black chocolate piping bag and draw a “C” shape outline on the sides of each light chocolate spot. Your spots are now complete.

Repeat Two More Times

Cupcakes in baking cups in oven

Now that your first layer is done and spotted, you're ready to try it again. And then again. After that 3rd layer has spots, you're ready to go in the oven.

You can use either baking Cups or cupcake liners in a tin but I wanted to show how fun and easy the baking cups are. They really make baked goods look SO much more professional.

Pro Tip : Do you see how full these baking cups are? They totally overflowed! Make sure to keep liners about 2/3 full to allow for rising of the cake. Luckily these were my test cupcakes and I learned my lesson real quick!

Pro Tip #2 : When making party food, it's a really good idea to have a small test batch! Just in case!

Display Safari Party Themed Cupcake

Cheetah cupcakes in baking cups for new years eve party

I think these are gorgeous without frosting and a simple New Years party pick.

The baking cups don't fade as the cupcake cooks and are ready to place on the party food table as soon as they come out of the oven! Grease spots no more!

Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

BUT if you have kiddos like mine that prefer their cupcakes with frosting you can use our easy chocolate buttercream recipe as well. After making frosting, add to another piping bag and snip a large hole for easier, more uniform frosting.

The frosting hides the leopard print cupcake and gives your guests a fun surprise!

Enjoy Your Safari Party Cupcakes

Now that these leopard print cupcakes are done I dare you to eat just one! I'm not a huge yellow cake fan but these were SO good with their chocolate spots. Wild cupcakes perfect for your Safari party theme!

  • 150 g flour
  • 240 g sugar
  • 4 Tbsp ground walnuts

Double the ingredients to make two 10-inch cakes.

  • 200 g ground walnuts

Covering the Cake:

  • 5 lbs green fondant ( 2.3 kg)
  • 1 lb white fondant + yellow, orange, brown, dark green and black gel food colouring for the fondant decorations; or you can buy fondant already coloured in those colours

Other Tools/Items:

  • 10 inch & 7 inch cake boards

Making the Cake

Use the ingredients listed above and follow the step-by-step instructions in this other post to make your 4 cakes.

Assembling the cake.

Spread some filling on your 10’’ cake board and place the first cake layer on top. Moisten it with sugar syrup and spread whipped chocolate ganache filling on top (~300 g of ganache per layer). Repeat the steps for the 2nd and 3rd cake layers. Lastly, place the 4th cake layer on top and moisten it with sugar syrup.

safari themed cake and cupcakes

Repeat the steps for the 7’’ cake. You should spread ~ 200g whipped ganache per cake layer.

safari themed cake and cupcakes

Crumb coat the cakes with a thin layer of the ganache you saved. Refrigerate them for 1-2 hours.

Covering the Cakes with Fondant

Knead and roll 2/3 of your green fondant to cover the 10’’ inch cake.

Before rolling out your fondant, sprinkle some powdered sugar or cornstarch on your work surface and knead it until it has a workable consistency and it doesn’t feel and look dry.

safari themed cake and cupcakes

Use a measuring tape or a piece of string to measure the top and sides of the cake. So if you measured 10’’ across the top and your cake is 4’’ tall that is 18’’ of cake in total so you need to roll out the fondant at least 20 inches in diameter but you should leave an inch or two extra.  Sprinkle some powdered sugar onto your work surface and roll out the green fondant in the approximate shape of your cake (i.e. circle for a round cake). As you are rolling it make sure you lift the fondant occasionally and rotate it 45 degrees to make sure it doesn’t stick to your work surface. If it sticks lift the fondant and sprinkle more powdered sugar or cornstarch.

Gently lift fondant over rolling pin and place it on the side of the cake. Start unrolling the fondant from the side of the cake and across the top to the other side.

safari themed cake and cupcakes

Smooth the fondant with a fondant smoother (or the palm of your hand) starting from the top.  Start to gently pull the fondant out and down around the sides of the cake using one hand and spread the excess fondant and smooth it out using a fondant smoother (or your other hand).

Keep turning the cake and repeating these steps until the sides are smooth and without any ruffles formed towards the bottom. It’s better if you use a fondant smoother since the pressure of your hands could leave marks and the warmth from your hands might make the fondant sticky.

Use your fondant smoother to get rid of any wrinkles and air bubbles as well.  If you see any air bubbles, insert a pin on an angle, release the air and smooth the area again.

Trim the edges at the bottom using an X-Acto knife , a pizza cutter or any other sharp knife you have.

safari themed cake and cupcakes

Repeat the same steps to cover the 7’’ cake and place it on the 7’’ cake board.

safari themed cake and cupcakes

Cut 4 boba straws or cake dowels to the height of the 10’’ cake and insert them into the cake.

safari themed cake and cupcakes

Spread another bit of frosting on top and place the 7’’ cake on top.

Making the Fondant Decorations

Sprinkle some powdered sugar or cornstarch on your work surface and roll out the brown fondant. Gently press the tree bark fondant impression mat onto the fondant to give it the wood effect.

safari themed cake and cupcakes

Cut a 3.5’’ x 4.5’’ square to make the wooden sign post. Then, cut a thin 1’’ x 6’’ strip to make the post. Lastly, cut two thin strips for the top and bottom edges of the sign.

safari themed cake and cupcakes

Assemble the sign post by using a bit of water to glue everything together.

safari themed cake and cupcakes

Use the tappit cutter to make the number 1 and attach it to your sign.

safari themed cake and cupcakes

Make the leaves for the palm trees using the leaf cutters and the dark green fondant. Then, for the tree trunk, roll a log out of brown fondant and make some indentations using the back of a knife blade or the blunt knife fondant tool.

Make the elephant, giraffe and lion as shown in the pictures below.

Attach all the fondant decorations to the cake using some water.

Use the Upper Case Tappit Cutters and Lower Case Funky Alphabet Tappit Cutters to make the letters of your kid’s name out of yellow fondant. Use the flower plunger cutter to make the small flowers out of white fondant.

Paint the bear paws on the cake using brown food colouring mixed with a few drops of vodka or water.

I made a 5’’ Smash Cake following the same recipes and steps above. You just need to reduce the ingredients – e.g. make each cake out of 4 eggs, use about 300 g of whipped ganache filling.

Sizing Chart

This customised cake design is frosted with swiss meringue buttercream, which is best consumed at room temperature when soft and creamy.

If refrigerated, thaw for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour or until cream is soft to the touch to ensure that it cuts well. Do note consume straight from the fridge as it will be crumbly and hard to cut.

The cake can be displayed in an air con room (at least 18°C) for up to 4 hours. It is not recommended to display or store cakes without air con, especially under the hot sun, or in warm and humid areas.

Make These WOW-Worthy Safari Minnie Cupcakes

These safari Minnie cupcakes are perfect for Disney fans whether you’re setting up a Jungle Cruise movie night, a safari party, or just because you want to have a bit of fun in the kitchen. And best of all – they’re pretty simple to make.

The cheetah spot ears will make you look like a professional baker (it will be our secret). You can use a cake box mix base, make my lazy girl’s chocolate cupcake recipe , or get a little help and buy pre-made cupcakes.

Adorable Safari Cupcake Idea

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I absolutely believe cupcakes are one of the best and most versatile desserts for any occasion. And Disney… Well, we are pretty much obsessed with making adorable Disney-themed treats around here.

When the Jungle Cruise movie came out, I made two versions of themed cupcakes – this Minnie Mouse cupcake and one a bit less girly for the fellas. I’ll put it below in case you want to whip up a batch.

Jungle Cruise Cupcake Idea

Earlier this year, I shared the ‘not so girly’ version of these Jungle Cruise cupcakes for a fun reminder of one of my daughter’s favorite rides at the park. She giggles, jumps, gasps, and screams with delight every time we ride it.

If you haven’t seen it, the movie was absolutely hilarious and has become one of our favorites to watch during family movie nights. These colorful cupcakes are perfect for a movie night because they only require a cake and frosting.

Fun Ways To Share These Jungle Minnie Mouse Cupcakes

  • Birthday Party Cupcakes – These would be super cute for a jungle or safari-themed birthday party. I found a ton of sets for the theme on Amazon: this is the one I bought for our party and I combined it with these fun leaf plates for the Jungle Cruise snack mix and a few other treats.
  • Jungle Cruise Movie Night – Cupcakes are the ultimate treat for snuggling up and watching movies at home (and they can be made ahead of time, so that’s awesome). I used the garland and a few balloons left over from the kit I mentioned above for an easy decoration.
  • Drop Off a Sweet Treat – I have these cupcake boxes on hand and combine them with stickers to drop off a treat for my daughter’s friends or when someone can’t make a party.
  • Bring Them as a Class Party or Booster – You would literally blow everyone’s minds if you make these for a bake sale or party! Just a tip: if you’re putting these into a traditional cupcake carrier, turn them perpendicular every other cake so they will fit without touching.

How to Store Cupcakes to Keep Them Fresh? What About Fondant and Frosting?

The key to keeping these cute Minnie cupcakes moist and delicious is to store them in an airtight container and keep them at room temperature. You don't have to store them in the fridge and can prepare them a day in advance of the party or event.

If you want to pre-bake the cupcakes, they can be stored in the freezer for a couple of months. Thaw them at room temperature. Additionally, you can make the frosting one week in advance or freeze and store for a couple of months. Bring to room temperature and beat with the mixer to fluff.

To make the cheetah spot Minnie or Mickey ears ahead of time, let them dry completely and use high quality edible ink markers. Wrap them in cling wrap and store them in an air tight container out of direct sunlight. Make sure they're not stacked on top of each other. You can make these up to a month ahead of the party.

Minnie mouse fondant ears.

  • Add cornstarch to a cutting board and knead the white fondant. It must become soft and workable.
  • Add a bit more cornstarch onto the cutting table if needed and roll out the fondant to 1/4 inch thick.

  • Use an ice cream scooper and scoop the frosting on top of the cooled cupcakes. Use a butter knife to spread out the frosting.
  • Roll the cupcake into the toasted coconut and set aside. Repeat with all cupcakes.
  • Add peanut butter to the rest of the frosting and put that mixture into a piping bag. Add a dollop of it onto the middle of each cupcake.
  • Put the bow in the middle and one ear to the left and right of the bow.

To turn this fun safari ear idea into a full-size cake, make the fondant circles larger and cut 4 of them. Place a skewer on a fondant disc, add water to secure, and layer the other disc on top. Let dry completely before decorating with cheetah spots.

A Jungle Safari Cake With A Surprise Inside

Copyright 2013 – Sweet Dreams Cake App/Michelle Davis – All Rights Reserved

“In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight ….. “

You have that song stuck in your head now, don’t you? Now you know how I felt the whole time I was working on my niece’s birthday cake. Every time I opened the door to my cake room it was like lifting the lid to a music box; the song would immediately fill my head. It was the perfect song for the cake though. My niece recently turned six and had a jungle themed birthday party at a local campground. She requested I make her a jungle cake with animal prints and jungle animals all over the cake. I took out my sketch pad and drew up my ideas.

I got her approval and went to work. After many hours of sculpting, baking and decorating (I’m not sure exactly how many since I don’t ever keep track) I finished and ended up with a cake that was almost exactly like my sketch. Most of the time it seems I end up having to change a lot of things in the process of going from sketch to finished product so it was kind of excited to keep so close to the plan.

Here is the final creation.

I loved this cake and had so much fun with it. Everything on the cake is edible. The animals are all sculpted from modeling chocolate and the tree is made from chocolate and rice krispy treats.

Here are some close up pictures of all the details.

My niece’s favorite jungle animal is the tiger so I made sure he sat on the top of the cake along with a tree and a bamboo number 6.

A cute little elephant seated on a leopard print tier.

The giraffe was my favorite. Notice how I made him eating some of the leaves from the upper tier.

The monkey was just hanging out, chillin on top of the zebra print.

A chocolate sign wishes my niece a “Happy Birthday.”

The king of the jungle sits in the very front of the cake behind the bamboo border of the cake base.

Some jungle foliage.

Lucky for you, I took pictures while I made everything so I have several tutorials to come on creating these jungle creatures.

Plus, there was a secret inside the cake. Take a look.

That’s right! Animal prints !

The top tier was tiger print, the middle leopard print and the bottom zebra print. This was my first attempt at getting creative with cake batter. It was so fun to hear the kids squeal in excitement once they saw the animal prints in the cake slices. I photographed how I made all these, as well, so you will also be getting tutorials on how to create your own animal print cakes .

It was such a special day. But as adorable as the cake turned out, it wasn’t anywhere near as adorable as my darling niece.

I hope it will be a day, and a cake, that she will never forget.

Check back soon because my next blog entry will start the series of jungle themed tutorials with instructions on how to bake animal print cakes.

Until next time, God Bless and Sweet Dreams.

BEAUTIFUL! You do great work! I bet she loved it!

Thank you Debbie!

Oh my gosh Michelle it’s one of the best kids cakes I’ve ever seen! You are so creative and talented 🙂

Thank you so much Tricia! You are so kind.

Your niece is one lucky girl to have an aunt like you! Beautiful job on the cake – the textures, colors and sculpting! Flawless! Would love a tutorial on this.

Thank you Beth. I will start with a post on how to bake the animal print interiors next week then I’ll post tutorials for making all the animals and the animal prints exteriors. Be on the lookout for them. 🙂

What do you line your cake pans with before putting your battery in them?

Hi Tamra, I usually spray them with a product like Baker’s Joy and then also line the bottom with some parchment paper. You can see pictures of how they are prepared in this link: http://www.sweetdreamscakeapp.com/2013/09/26/animal-print-inside-the-cake/ I hope that helps.

Are you able to freeze this cake? I’m thinking of doing this for my daughter’s bday but want to do it in advance and should I frost it first? Not sure I’m doing fondant.

I want to make an Africa theme cake for my Ethiopian daughter and love what you have done with this cake. What I don’t know how to do is to frost it with the zebra/cheetah/tiger/giraffe types of patterns. Yours look so perfect and I know you have great advice to give me. Will you reveal your secrets for the frosting-job you did?

Hi Margie, I have a tutorial on making the zebra and leopard prints that I made on the outside of my cakes. If you go to this link and scroll down about the middle of the page to the heading “Animal Prints” you will see explanation of the zebra stripes and pictures of the leopard spots. Hope this helps. Good luck! http://www.sweetdreamscakeapp.com/2013/10/03/how-to-create-a-safari-cake/

Thanks, Michelle, for your hasty response. I love your explanations about using a pasta roller for the black fondant for the zebra stripes and all the clear instructions about painting on the cheetah/leopard spots. What I am struggling with now is that nice, smooth base coat of frosting you have on all layers. Is that rolled fondant? Or do you have a recipe for a very smooth and shiny frosting? I am vegan which makes things a tad more challenging, although I do have a recipe for a decent vegan fondant. (I made all the tiles for a swimming pool cake with vegan fondant one year for my daughter’s birthday. Over 1000 tiles I cut out and dried!) So, I can go with fondant if I must. I just have never coated a cake with it.

Yes, Margie, all the cakes are covered in rolled fondant. Sorry, I didn’t explain that before. I bet your fondant will work great. There always has to be a first time for everything! If you want some video instruction of how to cover a cake in fondant, I have an app available for both iPhones/Ipads and Androids, called Sweet Dreams Cake App, that has video tutorials on it and I have one on how to cover a cake in fondant. Good luck to you!

Hi there Michelle!

Wow, what an awesome tutorial this is! So inspirational! You’ve sure got my creative inner-self longing to emerge in a flurry of fondant and butter cream! Haha! THANK YOU!!

My daughter is having a Jungle themed baby shower so this is awesome! I’m going to *attempt* to make this cake so wish me luck!

But before I do, I have some questions if you don’t mind. I realize you made this some time ago, but in general, (1) Do you ever provide a list of ALL the required items/ingredients for each of your cakes (everything from the coloring gel to the size of the pans)? I’d like to make a list but I have to go through every step of the tutorial to see what all is needed and it’s still a bit vague. For example, (2) how much fondant would one need to cover a 3-tier (Jungle) cake (with room for error)? (3) Do you recommend a specific pre-made brand or do you make it yourself? Also, (4) how much modeling chocolate (or gum paste) is needed to make each figure (animal) and (5) what kind do you use (home made, store bought)? Sorry for the inquisition but I’m a newbie and want to take on this challenge well prepared! 😉

Thank you again and I’ve definitely bookmarked your page!

Hi Yvette, Thank you for your kind words. I wish you lots of luck on making your daughter’s baby shower cake. I know it will be so special for her just knowing you made it.

To answer your questions, I don’t usually make an entire supply list. Since my tutorials are free I don’t spend the amount of time on them to figure out all supplies and amounts and all that. Cakes are a hobby for me and I only get to do them once in a while so I try to take pictures while I am doing them and then, after they are done, share my pictures and give explanations for what I did. The tutorials are more of explanations of cakes I made than actually me designing a cake just to make a tutorial for it. I’m not sure if that makes sense or not. 🙂 Usually, when I am making a cake, I sort of figure things out as I go so I don’t really know exactly how much fondant or modeling chocolate or things like that that I am going to use. I have large containers of them and pull out more as I need it. The best way to figure out how much fondant you need is to look up a fondant calculator online or use the calculator on Sweet Dreams Cake app if you have it for your phone/tablet. Use the amounts recommended for the cake sizes you are planning to use. For this cake I used 6″, 8″ and 10″ cakes and then the base board was 12″. As for fondant, I like to use Renshaw or Satin Ice. Both are available on Amazon if you can’t find them at a local cake decorating store. I used modeling chocolate for the animals but you could also use gum paste. The brand of gum paste that I always use is Satin Ice. For modeling chocolate, sometimes I make my own and sometimes I buy it. If I buy it, I get Fondarific Sculpting Chocolate. Otherwise I make it with candy melts and corn syrup. You can find Youtube videos on how to make it. I hope that helps you somewhat. I’m sorry I don’t have a detailed list for you. I use so many different things as I go and so many different tools that it is really hard for me to try to remember all of it after I am done and I am usually on a time crunch when I am working on the cakes. A lot of the time I even forget to keep up with my photographs. 🙂 Hope you enjoy making your cake and congrats on your daughter’s upcoming baby. God bless.

Thank you for the information and the quick response, Michelle! I totally understand about not providing lists of ingredients, that would really be way too time consuming for sure! But boy, you have no idea how much I appreciate the fact that you’re posting as much as you do! And your answer was great and very helpful because it gives me an idea of what to use and what to expect. Thank you for taking the time to respond and for such great inspiration! If I can pull this off, I’ll post pics, but it’s not until August, so bear with me! Have a wonderful week and keep up the beautiful work! 🙂

do you take the animals toppers for sale?

No, I’m sorry, I don’t. I’m just a hobby baker with limited time for doing my hobby. 🙂

This is awesome!

I really love the idea of these cake. My son’s has his 1st birthday coming up.can l order from you? I am in London

Thank you so much for the tutorial. I had a client who wanted this cake minus the top tier and tiger and your tutorial helped A LOT. The cake was a hit, wish I could show you pictures

Hi Sandelle, I am so happy to hear that your cake turned out so great! I’m sure your client was thrilled. Thanks for sharing and happy baking!

Amazing cake. Can I ask how you created The bamboo base.

Whether you're a cocktail fan or the dinner guest who prefers to eat their calories, boozy cupcakes are a fun conversation starter for any get together. From rum spiked pina colada-inspired batches to bourbon-infused old-fashioned ones, we rounded-up our favorite boozy cupcake recipes for you to try out the next time you’re hanging with friends for a long overdue happy hour. Because drinking your favorite cocktail is great but these cupcakes make your drink of choice that much sweeter.

Moscow Mule Cupcakes (pictured above)

You're going to want to tip your bartender — er, baker — double for this one. Though this recipe utilizes much of the same ingredients found in your typical vanilla cupcake — salt, sugar, butter, etc. — it’s the ground and crystallized ginger that gives it that warming, spicy jolt that a perfectly made Moscow Mule is known for. When combined with the studded buttercream frosting — which is made from a bold combo of vodka and lime juice and zest — these cupcakes truly are a work of art. Use copper-colored cupcake liners for a glitzy touch.

Hefeweizen Orange Cupcakes

If you love to break open a cold one on a summer day, try these German-beer spiked cupcakes instead. You’ll use Hefeweizen, or white beer, in both the batter and the frosting, along with finely grated orange zest and ground cloves to give your cupcakes a citrusy punch that pairs oh-so-nicely with the wheaty taste of the beer. Trust us — they’re just as good as the stuff that’s on tap!

Negroni Cupcakes

There’s no better way to wet your whistle than with these swirly and colorful Negroni-inspired cupcakes. Campari has a starring role in the frosting, while pink and black peppercorns and finely grated grapefruit zest take the lead in the batter, giving you a sweet treat that’s as spicy as it is fragrant and herbal. We topped ours with coarse orange sugar and small orange slices, but a curly orange peel works just as nicely.

Mint Julep Cupcakes

Though the Kentucky Derby has come and gone, you don’t need a horse race to imbibe these Mint Julep cupcakes. Here a little splash of bourbon goes a really long way — you’ll use it in your batter, plus you’ll brush the top of each cupcake after baking to give each one an extra buzz. Creme de Menthe and mint extract shine through the frosting, leaving you with a cool and refreshing treat that’ll help you forget just how hot it might be outside.

Pina Colada Cupcakes

Rolling waves and bright sunshine: both will instantly come to mind when you take a giant bite out of one of these tropical cupcakes. Dark rum gives both the cake and frosting a slightly spicy kick while pineapple juice and shredded coconut gives these cupcakes a yummy sweetness overall. Decorate with some cocktail umbrellas and one or two maraschino cherries to turn your snack time into an exotic adventure (even if you're sitting indoors.)
