How to Use the Secret Safari Browser Hidden on Your Apple Watch

Did you know your Apple Watch is hiding a built-in web browser? Here’s how to find and use it.

When you press the Digital Crown on your Apple Watch, you won’t find the Safari app in the app bubble or list of watchOS apps. This might make you think there’s no way to browse the web on your Apple Watch. But that isn’t the case.

Using the guide below, you can open web pages on your Apple Watch in a secret Safari browser that is actually built into watchOS.

How to Browse the Web With Safari on an Apple Watch

Even though there is no visible browser on Apple Watch, if you receive a link in Messages or Mail, you can tap to open it and use a watchOS version of Safari to browse the web.

Here’s how to open any specific web page on your Apple Watch:

  • Use your iPhone or Apple Watch to send the desired URL to yourself or someone close via Messages or Mail.
  • Open the Messages or Mail app on your Apple Watch.
  • Inside the Messages or Mail app, go to the conversation or email you just sent.
  • Tap the URL . It’ll open in the secret Safari browser.

Tip: To send the URL to yourself, open the iPhone Messages app, tap the compose button, and in the recipient section, type the phone number or email associated with iMessage. Type or paste the desired URL and hit send .

You can also type the URL directly in a message conversation with the full QWERTY keyboard on the Apple Watch Series 7 . On other models, use dictation and say something like "apple.com."

Please note that, if you use the scribble feature to enter the website address, it often registers "o" of the word "com" as "0" (zero). So, use the watch keyboard, dictation, or your iPhone to send the URL.

Important Points About Browsing the Web on an Apple Watch

The browsing experience on Apple Watch isn’t as feature-rich as on an iPhone, and you must keep these points in mind to make the most of it:

  • Scroll: Use one finger or rotate the Digital Crown to scroll up or down on the web page. Similar to iPhone, on Apple Watch, tapping at the top of the screen usually takes you to the top of the current page, but doing the same with a web page open does nothing.
  • Open new pages: You can tap the interlinks on a web page to keep visiting new links.
  • Use the on-page search box: If a web page (like Wikipedia) has a search box, you can tap it and enter the search query using the Apple Watch keyboard, scribble, or dictation.
  • Enter a new address manually: You can’t tap the URL address bar to enter a new address, you need to use links on the page itself.
  • Navigate between web pages: To go back or forward, swipe right or left from the edge of the Apple Watch screen.
  • Zoom in on a web page: You can’t use two fingers to pinch and zoom into the web page. But you can double-tap to zoom in and out. Once the web page is zoomed in, drag it around with one finger.
  • Reload the page: Tap the address bar at the top and tap Reload Page . This screen also shows the option to go to the Previous Page .
  • Change view: Tap the address bar at the top and choose from Reader view or Web View . Not every website offers these options.
  • Multitask: You can click the Digital Crown to use other apps. The web page will stay open unless you close the Apple Watch Messages or Mail app.
  • Stop web browsing: To exit web browsing on Apple Watch, tap Close from the top left of the screen.
  • Images: The hidden web browser on your Apple Watch may not display some images or take a lot of time to load them. Plus, tapping an image may not open it in full view.
  • Fonts: Similarly, many custom fonts may not be rendered and displayed on the watchOS Safari. It will fall back to using standard fonts. As a result, a familiar website may look different on Apple Watch than on iPhone or Mac.

How to Clear the Browsing History on Apple Watch

The Apple Watch needs a companion iPhone to sync things like watch screenshots or voice memos you record. But your Apple Watch browsing history doesn’t sync and merge with the Safari history of your paired iPhone.

Here’s how to delete Apple Watch cookies, credentials, and other browsing data from the Apple Watch itself:

  • Open the Settings app on Apple Watch.
  • Tap General .
  • Scroll down and tap Website Data .
  • Tap Clear Website Data and confirm by tapping Clear Data .

Why Doesn’t the Apple Watch Have a Normal Web Browser?

Apple doesn’t show the Safari icon on the Apple Watch. The main reasons for this are the tiny screen and its battery.

Compared to even the smallest popular smartphone, the biggest Apple Watch Series 7 has a tiny screen. Due to this, it isn’t very comfortable to type a URL and view web pages on it. Plus, due to other watchOS limitations, filling forms, uploading files, and other online interactions aren’t possible from a watchOS browser.

The Apple Watch also has a small battery that struggles to last a full day under the heavy use of existing apps and features. If a regular web browser was added, rendering feature-rich websites would drain the battery more quickly. And if watchOS tries to cut down the rich, battery-draining contents of a web page, it will offer a poor experience to users.

Third-Party Apple Watch Browsers

Major developers don’t have much interest or incentive in creating a browser for the tiny watch screen. That being said, if you truly need a web browser on your Apple Watch, you can check out µBrowser for $0.99. If you don’t wish to pay, Parrity is a free Apple Watch web browser you can give a shot.

Will Apple Add a Full Safari Browser to Future Versions of watchOS?

It’s hard to say. Apple doesn’t even let you listen to music on the watch’s internal speakers. You must connect it to AirPods or other Bluetooth earphones to play music added to the Apple Watch. All this is to extend the battery life and get you through the day. So, the chances of adding a full web browser where people can access sites like YouTube seems highly improbable.

But if battery technology reaches a point where it packs a lot of juice in a tiny form factor, we might get Safari on Apple Watch.

Web Browsing on Apple Watch

Now you know the trick to visit a website on your Apple Watch. This isn’t useful for a lot of use cases, but suppose you’re leaving for a place where you can’t use your iPhone. In this situation, you can send the link to yourself on iMessage or email and then open it on your Apple Watch when needed.

I accidentally discovered the hidden Safari browser on my Apple Watch — here’s how to do it

Surfing the web comes in handy when you're in a pinch

Apple Watch hidden Safari browser.

One of the coolest things I read about lately is Motorola’s concept bendable smartphone introduced at MWC 2024 that can be worn on your wrist. I was really impressed about the possibilities of a wrist-worn smartphone, up until a notification popped up on my Apple Watch , which subsequently led me to accidentally discovering its hidden Safari browser.

I’ll be the first to admit that smartphones are better suited for surfing the web, but I like having my options open. Browsing websites on an Apple Watch may not be as practical, mainly due to its tinier display, but it can certainly come in handy when I’m in a pinch.

I’m not saying that web surfing on a wearable needs to be a core feature available on the best smartwatches . However, I can see how others may lean on the option if given the opportunity. Here’s how to access it.

How to access the hidden Safari browser on your Apple Watch

Apple Watch hidden Safari browser.

No, there’s not a Safari app for the Apple Watch. I wish it were that easy, but it’s actually buried in the WatchOS software. I’ve tried loading up different sites to see how they load and function on my Apple Watch’s display.

For the most part it functions in a reduced capacity than what we’re all used to on our phones. Believe me, you don’t want to shop or fill out long forms with this hidden Safari browser — and for the most part — should be used strictly to browse sites and nothing more. That’s because it has trouble running certain web scripts, resulting in some page elements not loading properly. Here are some important things you should know about using the hidden Safari browser on your Apple Watch.

  • Scrolling: You can do this either by using swipe gestures on the screen or using the digital crown.
  • Page views: Sometimes it’ll load in a reader view to make it easier to see, but there’s an option for web view for the full experience.
  • Navigation : The URL bar that loads at the top can’t be used to type in URLs. However, there are buttons to stop and reload the page — along with returning to the previous page.
  • Zooming: On some pages you’ll be able to zoom by double tapping anywhere on the display. Otherwise, text passages will automatically fill out the entire width of the screen.
  • Multitasking: If you exit the Safari browser, it should remain in memory and be accessible by double pressing the digital crown to get into the recent apps menu.

1. Send yourself the desired URL

How to access the hidden Safari browser on your Apple Watch.

On your Apple Watch, you will need to send the URL to yourself by opening the Messages app , tapping the compose button , choosing yourself as the contact, and then typing the URL by using the on-screen keyboard or Siri voice dictation. Once you have the URL, tap the giant send button .

2. Launch the hidden Safari browser

How to access the hidden Safari browser on your Apple Watch.

Once you’ve sent the URL to yourself, you’ll get a notification where you can instantly jump into the message. If not, simply open the Message app and tap on the preview window of the URL you sent. A new page should load on top of the Messages app. In certain instances, the browser will default to the Reader view, but you can change it to Web View by clicking the URL bar at the top.

3. Mail app can also launch Safari browser

How to access the hidden Safari browser on your Apple Watch.

Alternatively, you can also access the Safari browser through links in the Mail app . When you click on them, a new page will overlay the mail app with the appropriate link.

Smartwatches like the Apple Watch aren’t meant to replace our smartphones. They’re extensions that let us access some of the most commonly used functions on our phones, like the way they discreetly show notifications.

This hidden Safari browser can be useful when you’re in a dire situation. While I was able to basically get to checkout on Motorola’s website for one of its phones, I really don’t recommend using it for this purpose — but rather — the option to quickly browse a webpage.

How-To Geek

How to use your apple watch's hidden web browser (and why you shouldn't).

While you can use your Apple Watch to browse the web, should you do it?

Quick Links

Three ways to access the apple watch browser, why you should avoid browsing from your wrist, third-party watchos browser apps do exist, leave the browsing to your other devices.

The Apple Watch might not feature Safari in its list of apps, but the browser is indeed there, just waiting to render web pages. While browsing your favorite websites from your wrist may seem convenient, some hurdles still exist.

To access the Apple Watch browser, you'll need to tap a link. There are three surefire ways of getting a link using stock apps within watchOS. There may be more if you use third-party apps, which you can install using the Watch app on your iPhone or on the Watch directly .

Related: How to Install Apps Directly on Your Apple Watch

1. Use Siri

The easiest way of launching the browser is to ask Siri to do it. To do this, press and hold the Digital Crown button to trigger Siri, then say "search for howtogeek.com" or whichever website you'd like to launch.

You may also be able to use "Hey, Siri" or simply raise your wrist to speak if you have these options enabled in your Apple Watch settings.

From here, Siri will perform a web search and offer you a list of websites. Tap "Open Page" to open a website in a browser overlay.

Search engines like Google, DuckDuckGo, and Bing allow you to undertake more in-depth browsing sessions, but often, searching for what you need directly is the easiest way to get where you want to go.

2. Use Messages

While Siri is the most convenient method of launching the watchOS browser, you can also use Messages. All you need is a link to tap in a Messages conversation. If someone sends you a link, you can tap on it to launch the browser and take a look.

To access a web page of your choice using this method, you'll need to send yourself the link. This isn't so bad if you have an Apple Watch Series 7 or later with a full wrist keyboard . Third-party messaging apps may also support this feature.

Apple Watch Series 7 Smart Watch

The Apple Watch Series 7 features a full wrist keyboard which improves the Safari browsing experience.

3. Use Mail

Finally, you can also tap on links within email messages. Just like the Messages method, this requires the presence of a link in an incoming email.

You can type (or dictate) and send a link via email. Once received, you can then tap the link to open the web page.

We found launching the browser via the Apple Watch imprecise and a bit inconvenient. And there are a few reasons why.

The Browser Is Impractical

To start, we experienced issues with rendering on our Series 4 Apple Watch. As you can see in the screenshot below of the How-To Geek homepage, the images haven't appeared, and the alignment of some elements is off.

While performing web searches using Siri is the best method to use, it still requires patience and some thoughtful search cues. For example, telling Siri to "search for wikipedia.com" opens an App Store link rather than Wikipedia.

Since Siri includes information from Wikipedia, saying "search for iPhone Wikipedia" doesn't provide you with a link but a summary of the topic.

You must remember to say "search the web" for these queries, and even then you need to hope that Bing (which Siri uses) gets the right results.

The other methods have even less utility since you must use precise web addresses. If you're using an Apple Watch without a keyboard, you'll have to use Apple's "scribble" text input method, which frequently confuses the letter "o" with the numeral "0." This can cause many ".com" links to fail.

The Mail and Messages methods can be made a little more practical by sending messages to yourself, but it's still not the most pleasant way of browsing the web. Dictating a web address is fine, but if you're using your voice, you're better off using Siri.

Performing more precise queries requires using a search engine as a jumping-off point, such as Google, DuckDuckGo, or Bing.

Sometimes pages will open in Reader view by default, which makes for a more useful reading experience at the cost of web page functionality. If this happens, tap the address bar to change to "Web View" instead.

Using a Browser on Your Wrist Is Uncomfortable

Using a browser on your wrist isn't the most comfortable option. No watch was designed to be used for an extended length of time. You may experience physical discomfort from holding your wrist in an extended position. While short browsing sessions are doable, longer sessions may not be possible.

If you're serious about browsing the web on your Apple Watch, a third-party browser might be worth it to overcome some of the hurdles we discussed above.

Of the free Apple Watch browsers we tried,  Parrity  is the only option we would recommend. The browser renders a page separately, then sends a snapshot to your Apple Watch, so you don't have as many issues with rendering as you do using the above methods.

The app functions as you'd expect, allowing you to perform searches and enter web addresses just like in Safari.

The interface even makes a few accommodations, like providing shortcuts for common web address prefixes and suffixes like "www." and ".com" to make things a little easier.

It's still a bit tedious to use on an Apple Watch model before the Series 7 because of the lack of a physical keyboard.

The "scribble" input method doesn't work great for precise web addresses, and dictating URLs aloud isn't going to suit everyone's tastes.

There are other paid Apple Watch browsers to choose from, including µBrowser  and Squint Browser , but we wouldn't recommend spending your money on these tools.

Your other devices, such as your iPhone or iPad, are much better suited for browsing. Yet, there are still plenty of reasons to use an Apple Watch, whether you're into outdoor pursuits like hiking , looking for motivation on your fitness journey , or want potentially life-saving features like heart health notifications or fall detection .

How to use the hidden Apple Watch web browser to browse the web

Apple Watch supports viewing web content on your wrist, and in this tutorial, we’ll show you how to use the hidden watchOS browser to visit any website you like.

Browsing the web on Apple Watch

How it works

Apple Watch doesn’t have a visible Safari browser. Therefore, you won’t find it in your app list. However, Apple’s WebKit engine is integrated into watchOS, making it possible to use the internet on your wrist.

So, how do you access the web if there is no Safari browser?

How to visit websites on your Apple Watch

  • Open the Messages or Mail app on your iPhone and send yourself the link you want to access on your Apple Watch. This also works if someone has already sent you a text or email with a website URL.
  • Press the Digital Crown to see all your apps. From here, open the Messages or Mail app.
  • Tap the link , and it will open that web page.
  • When you’re done, hit Close to exit web browsing and return to the Mail or Messages app.

Open link on Apple Watch

Controls while browsing on Apple Watch

You can interact with the web view using these gestures:

  • Scroll: Move your finger on the screen or rotate the Digital Crown.
  • Zoom: Double-tap to zoom in, and double-tap again to zoom out.
  • Follow hyperlinks: Tap a web link to load the underlying webpage.
  • Enter text: Tap a text field to type, speak, or spell out some text.
  • Back or Forward: Swipe left/right from the edge of the screen.
  • Normal Web View or Reader View: Tap the URL bar at the top.
  • Reload page: Tap the URL bar at the top.

Controls while browsing on Apple Watch

Note: Apple made the right choice by defaulting to Safari Reader. In case you haven’t yet tried Reader Mode in Safari , it strips articles of annoying ads, navigation bars, custom stylesheets, and other distractions, leaving you with pure text and images.

Can I type in the URL bar?

Once a web page opens, you’ll see an address bar at the top which shows the site URL you’re currently on. Sadly, tapping that URL box doesn’t pop open the keyboard, and you can’t enter any other site name or address manually. However, you can tap any link on the current webpage, and it will work. For example, if iDownloadBlog is open on your Apple Watch, you can tap a link you see there (say for a post), and it will open.

How to open Google on Apple Watch

Just send yourself the google.com link and open it on your watch. A mobile-optimized Google search page will show up. You can type the search query in the search box with the QWERTY keyboard (on Series 7 & later), scribble or dictate your query, as well as select the desired item from the Google homepage.

Browsing the web with Google on Apple Watch

WebKit integration on Apple Watch: What’s the use?

Implementing support for WebKit is a monumental achievement. The Cupertino technology giant doesn’t feel like browsing the web on such a tiny screen would make sense—that’s why Apple Watch doesn’t ship with Safari. That said, it’s possible for your Apple Watch to render web content, albeit in a limited fashion. For example, you can check out a restaurant menu or read a quick news article without pulling an iPhone out of your pocket.

In other words, the lack of manual input significantly reduces the web browsing ability on your Apple smartwatch. However, if there are links that you must open on your wrist for any reason, then you can send yourself the link via messages or email and visit it later. Besides that, if someone sends you a link in iMessage or email, the WebKit integration allows you to have a quick look from your watch, and for a deeper experience, you can always visit that link later on your iPhone.

Browsing web on Apple Watch

Old Apple Watch?

Series 2 , Series 1 , and Series 0 models aren’t supported. Attempting to open an attached link on an unsupported model yields an error message saying, “This link isn’t viewable on Apple Watch, but you can open it on your iPhone.”

Web pages not loading on Apple Watch

Don’t expect the watch to render all websites properly. In our experience, webpages with complex layouts with embedded widgets and JavaScript code might get stuck, resulting in a blank page or refusing to load at all. Still, it’s nice knowing that limited web content support is there should you ever need it.

Third-party browsers for Apple Watch

Apple doesn’t offer Safari on Apple Watch, but you can use a third-party app to access the web. Here are two mini browsers you can try:

  • µBrowser : $0.99
  • Parrity : Free

How to browse the web on an Apple Watch

How to browse the web on an Apple Watch: While Apple does offer a hidden browser, a new mini web browser is bringing the web to your wrist.

Apple doesn’t include its Safari browser on the Apple Watch for obvious reasons. It’s doesn’t believe you can achieve a worthy World Wide Web experience on a 45mm display.

There is a hidden browser of sorts that’s a product of Apple’s own WebKit API, introduced in watchOS 5. That comes into play when you receive a URL link within the Messages and Mail apps. Tap those links and you will see a functional web page where you can tap links and browse through websites, using the Digital Crown to scroll through pages.

Click Link on Apple Watch

This also applies with links that appear within Siri search results. MacRumors also points out a little hack where you can send yourself a link to Google via iMessages, perform the web search there and browse whatever you want.

Download the µBrowser for Apple Watch

While there is no Safari, where there’s a will, there’s the intrepid developer community. The µBrowser is described as a Mini Browser on your Watch and arrived on the App Store last week to great acclaim, with a 4.8 rating out of 5 so far. It only costs $0.99/£0.99 too.

You can download the µBrowser app for Apple Watch here .

It enables you to type in web addresses directly on the display or enter search terms to enjoy a micro browsing experience. The companion iPhone app also enables you to set up bookmarks to your favourite sites to avoid having to type them in.

Apple Watch ubrowser

You will need watchOS 8 installed on your Apple Watch and iOS 15 on your iPhone in order to use this app. It should work nicely on all of phones compatible with the latest update, although the larger displays available in the newer generations will naturally be best.

There are some issues, naturally, with readability on home websites, while 9to5Mac reports that images can take a while to launch, if they launch at all. Users do have to confirm they want to browse to that page after it launches.

Developer, the app-tly named Arno Appenzeller writes : “I believe that µBrowser can be the perfect emergency browser when you are on the go and don’t have your phone with yourself. It is a start and I hope watchOS will improve so I can add new features to µBrowser. I’m pretty interested in deliver the best possible web experience on iOS.”

Safari on apple watch.

Safari is Apple's web browser that is built into many of its devices, including the Apple Watch. While the Apple Watch's small screen size and limited input options make it a challenging device for browsing the web, Safari on the Apple Watch can still be useful for quick lookups or accessing specific websites. Here's what you need to know about Safari on the Apple Watch:

Accessing Safari on Apple Watch To access Safari on your Apple Watch, simply press the Digital Crown on the side of the watch to go to the home screen. From there, you can tap on the Safari icon (which looks like a compass) to launch the app.

Browsing the Web on Apple Watch When you first launch Safari on your Apple Watch, you'll see a search bar at the top of the screen. You can use your voice or the scribble feature to enter a web address or search term, or you can select from a list of suggested websites below the search bar.

Once you've entered a website, Safari will load the page in a simplified format that is optimized for the small screen of the Apple Watch. You can use the Digital Crown to scroll up and down on the page, and you can tap on links to navigate to other pages.

Note that some websites may not be optimized for the Apple Watch, which can make them difficult to navigate or read on the small screen. Additionally, some features of websites (such as videos or interactive elements) may not work on the Apple Watch.

Using Handoff with Safari If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can use the Handoff feature to seamlessly transfer a webpage from your Apple Watch to your other device. To do this, simply swipe up on the Apple Watch screen to bring up the Control Center, and then tap on the Handoff icon (which looks like a Safari logo) to transfer the webpage to your other device.

Other Tips and Tricks for Safari on Apple Watch

  • You can use the Force Touch gesture (pressing firmly on the screen) in Safari to access additional options, such as refreshing the page or opening a new tab.
  • You can also use the Digital Crown to zoom in or out on a webpage, or to adjust the font size.
  • To exit Safari on your Apple Watch, simply press the Digital Crown again to return to the home screen.

In conclusion, while Safari on the Apple Watch may not be the most practical way to browse the web, it can still be a useful tool for quick lookups or accessing specific websites on the go. Just keep in mind the limitations of the small screen size and the simplified formatting of webpages.

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

safari sur apple watch

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

safari sur apple watch

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Customization

Putting the you in url..

Safari is more customizable than ever. Organize your tabs into Tab Groups so it’s easy to go from one interest to the next. Set a custom background image and fine-tune your browser window with your favorite features — like Reading List, Favorites, iCloud Tabs, and Siri Suggestions. And third-party extensions for iPhone, iPad, and Mac let you do even more with Safari, so you can browse the way you want across all your devices.

safari sur apple watch

Safari Profiles allow you to separate your history, extensions, Tab Groups, favorites, cookies, and more. Quickly switch between profiles for topics you create, like Personal and Work.

safari sur apple watch

Web apps let you save your favorite websites to the Dock on Mac and to the Home Screen on iPhone and iPad. A simplified toolbar and separate settings give you an app-like experience.

safari sur apple watch

Safari Extensions add functionality to your browser to help you explore the web the way you want. Find and add your favorite extensions in the dedicated Safari category on the App Store.

Save and organize your tabs in the way that works best for you. Name your Tab Groups, edit them, and switch among them across devices. You can also share Tab Groups — making planning your next family trip or group project easier and more collaborative.

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

safari sur apple watch

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

safari sur apple watch

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Designed for developers.

Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. WebKit in macOS Sonoma includes optimizations that enable even richer browsing experiences, and give developers more control over styling and layout — allowing for more engaging content.

Use Siri on Apple Watch

Useful siri commands.

You can use Siri to perform tasks and get answers right on your Apple Watch. For example, use Siri to translate what you say into another language, identify a song and provide an instant Shazam result, or, after you ask a general question, display the first few search results along with a brief excerpt from each page. Just tap Open Page to view the page on Apple Watch. Try using Siri to do things that usually take you a couple of steps.

Siri is not available in all regions and languages. See the Apple Support article watchOS Feature Availability .

Siri: Say something like:

“How do you say ‘How are you?’ in Chinese?”

“Start a 30-minute outdoor run”

“Tell Kathleen I’m almost finished”

“Open the Sleep app”

"Open Settings”

“What song is this?”

“What causes rainbows?”

“What’s my update?”

“What kinds of things can I ask you?”

The Siri screen showing the Mandarin Chinese translation for “How do you say how are you in Chinese.”

How to use Siri

To make a Siri request, do any of the following:

Raise your wrist and speak into your Apple Watch.

safari sur apple watch

Say “Hey Siri” or just “Siri,” followed by your request.

Note: The use of “Siri” only is not available in some languages and regions.

Press and hold the Digital Crown until you see the listening indicator, then speak your request.

Tip: After you activate Siri, you can lower your wrist. You’ll feel a tap when there’s a response.

To reply to a question from Siri or to continue the conversation, hold down the Digital Crown and speak.

Siri can speak responses to you, as it does on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. You can also hear Siri responses through a Bluetooth headset or speakers connected to your Apple Watch .

Note: To use Siri, Apple Watch must be connected to the internet. Cellular charges may apply.

Choose how Siri responds

Always On: Siri speaks responses, even when your Apple Watch is in silent mode.

Control With Silent Mode: Siri responses are silenced when your Apple Watch is set to silent mode.

Headphones Only: Siri only speaks responses when your Apple Watch is connected to Bluetooth headphones.

Note: The option to change Siri Voice is not available in all languages.

Display captions and transcriptions of your Siri requests

Type to siri and siri pause time.

If you have difficulty speaking, you can type Siri requests or ask Siri to wait longer for you to finish speaking.

Go to Accessibility > Siri, then turn on Type to Siri.

If you want Siri to wait longer for you to finish speaking, tap Longer or Longest under Siri Pause Time.

Delete Siri history

When you use Siri or dictation, your requests are stored for six months on Apple servers to help improve Siri responses to you. Your requests are associated with a random identifier, not with your Apple ID or email address. You can delete these interactions from the server at any time.

Tap Siri, tap Siri History, then tap Delete Siri History.

For more information, see the Apple Support article Ask Siri, Dictation & Privacy .

APPLE WATCH SAFARI

apple watch can browse on a website?

Apple Watch Series 2, watchOS 4.2

Apple Watch does not include a Safari web browser.

Some third-party web browser apps are available via the App Store. For example:

WatchWeb - The Web Browser for your Watch on the App Store

To search for apps with results automatically filtered to list only results that include an app for Apple Watch, use the App Store or Search tabs in the Watch app on your iPhone.

Siri on Apple Watch also offers some search-related functionality, as detailed here:

Apple Watch is not yet capable of Surfing the web, and chances are it won't happen. The closest you can get is with Siri who will give basic background information on Places, People and "Things" in general.

How to surf the web on Apple TV

Karen Haslam

For reasons best known to Apple, there is no web browser available on the Apple TV. Despite the fact that the Apple TV runs a version of iOS there is not a version of Safari designed for Apple TV and there is no substitute web browser available in the TV App Store.

But before you drown in disappointment, there are a few ways in which you can surf the web on your Apple TV. Read on to find out how.

We’ll look at three ways in which you can access your favourite websites on your TV screen, including popular TV Catchup channels, FaceBook, Google’s search engine and more. Read about how to watch OnDemand TV channels on Apple TV here .

Method 1: Surf the web on your Apple TV using AirPlay

This is the easiest way to surf the web on the Apple TV. It’s ideal if you want to share the surfing experience with friends and family who are in the room with you, or if what you are looking at on the web would benefit from a bigger screen.

Using Apple’s AirPlay you can stream the screen of your iPhone or your Mac to your TV screen.

Pros: You can see everything that you see on your iPhone or Mac on the TV screen.

Cons: You might as well be looking at your iPhone or Mac screen, and when it comes to scrolling and typing you will be. You won’t be able to use your iPhone for anything else while you are mirroring it’s screen on the TV.

How to view your iPhone screen on your TV

  • Swipe up from the bottom of your iPhone to view Control Centre.
  • Tap on Screen Mirroring
Choose your Apple TV.
  • You may be required to enter an AirPlay code for the Apple TV you are connecting too. This code will appear on the TV Screen attached to the Apple TV.
  • Navigate to Safari on your iPhone and surf the web.
  • If you rotate our iPhone into landscape you should be able to view the web using the full screen of your TV (some apps, like Facebook won’t rotate).

How to view the screen of your Mac on your TV

  • Click on the AirPlay icon from the menu bar at the top of the screen (a triangle pointing into a box)
  • Choose your Apple TV from the options
  • Your Mac display may alter so that it is optimised for the Apple TV (this made everything smaller on our MacBook screen) .
  • There are a few different ways you can set up AirPlay on your Mac and TV screen. You could mirror the Mac screen on the TV, in which case you will see everything on your Mac duplicated over on the TV.
  • However, if you want to surf on your TV screen, while leaving your Mac free to do something else, you can change the arrangement of your screens – this would be ideal if you wanted to stream video to your TV while typing into a Pages document on your Mac at the same time.
  • Open System Preferences > Display and click on Arrangement

safari sur apple watch

  • Now based on how you arrange the screens you can drag your Safari (or other browser) window over to the Apple TV screen. To figure our which display is which in the illustration under the Arrangement tab click on the screen and you will see a red outline on the one that represents the Apple TV. Drag in that direction and the browser will appear on your TV screen.
  • You can now use your mouse, or trackpad to scroll around the browser on your TV screen.
  • We find it preferable to use a separate keyboard and mouse because they feel less connected to your Mac and therefore you feel more like you are surfing the web on the TV. Even better if you have a wireless mouse and keyboard. One reason why this feels more natural is that you don’t need to look at your Mac at all while surfing.
  • Remember that you won’t be able to continue using your Mac while someone else surfs the web on the TV screen (or rather you can, but there will be a battle over the mouse and keyboard). It’s the perfect set up for showing video on the TV screen – perhaps something on All4 or another Catch Up TV channel – while using your Mac for something else.

Read more about using AirPlay to stream from your Mac to TV here .

Method 2 – Surf the web using AirBrowser on your iPhone

One issue with surfing the web on your TV screen via your iPhone and AirPlay is the fact that you have to scroll and swipe around on your iPhone so you might as well be doing your surfing on that device rather than the TV. As we said earlier, it’s ideal if you want other people in the room to see what you are looking at, but otherwise, we’re not sure what you really gain.

Here’s where AirBrowser comes in.

Pros: AirBrowser puts a web browser on your TV screen while reserving the iPhone for controls and a keypad. You get a full desktop view of the web pages.

Cons: Not all elements of web pages worked in AirBrowser. Some forms were difficult to fill in if they used multiple choice. It costs £5.

AirBrowser places controls for browsing the web on your iPhone – so you can swipe around the page, or type using the iPhone keyboard, but the actual web page appears on the TV screen.

  • Download AirBrowser from the App Store on your iPhone (it costs £4.99)
  • Open the AirBrowser app.
  • You will be asked to Connect Second Screen, the animation shows you how, except the animation shows how it worked in iOS 10, rather than iOS 11.
  • Swipe up on Control Panel and choose Screen Mirroring.
  • Choose your Apple TV.
  • Now you should see a browser on the TV screen and a url bar on the iPhone. Tap on the URL bar and enter the name of the site you wish to visit, or a search phrase.
  • On the TV screen you will either see the website you wished to visit or the results of your Google search.
  • To scroll down the page swipe upwards with two fingers.
  • To click on a link use one finger to track to the link and tap.
  • To go back to the previous page tap on the back arrow at the top of the iPhone interface.
  • To view all the tabs you have open tap on the central icon that shows 9 dots.
  • You can view the site as it would appear on desktop or mobile by swiping between the two options at the bottom of the page.

safari sur apple watch

We did encounter a few difficulties using AirBrowser. For example when it came to signing in to use services sometimes we weren’t able to because where a site used a multiple choice selection tool for, say, your date of birth or title, it wasn’t possible to select an option.

At other times we found that we couldn’t play video because it was in Flash. The browser seems to fool the site into thinking it’s a Mac, but of course your TV and your iPhone can’t download Flash so you can’t view the content.

safari sur apple watch

Another issue we had was when viewing iTV player. We were able to get it to play the content but we weren’t able to select full screen view in order for the video player to fill the TV screen. Instead we were able to increase page size by zooming in (pinch to zoom). We had more success with iTV player than any of the other TV services. On my5 we got a video playback errors.

Read more about watching OnDemand TV on your Apple TV here .

Method 3 – Using tvOSBrowser to surf the web on your Apple TV

This one is a little more complicated to set up, but essentially gives you a web browser on your Apple TV. You’ll need an Apple Developer account (which is free), Xcode and a USB-C cable or an adapter. If that doesn’t sound like you it probably won’t be worth you reading any further.

Pros: This is the closest you will get to an web browser app for the Apple TV.

Cons: It’s not easy to install and probably isn’t worth the effort.

Of course if you like tinkering with things like this, then go ahead. This would probably interest you too: How to jailbreak an Apple TV.

  • We’ll assume you have a developer account. If not you need to set one up here developer.apple.com/account.
  • Download Xcode from the Mac App Store.
  • Get a USB-A to USB-C cable.
  • Download the source code to tvOSBrowser using Xcode (you can get it from here https://github.com/steventroughtonsmith/tvOSBrowser)
  • This is where it all gets a little complicated. You have to remove some code in order to get the tvOSBrowser to work. We suggest you read this tutorial here .

How to view and clear your web browsing history in Safari on iPhone or iPad

Easily wipe your browsing history in Apple's Safari web browser in seconds.

iPhone 13 mini in hand

What you'll need

How to find your web-browsing history, how to clear your web browsing history.

Clearing your browsing history on iPhone and iPad in Safari has been a straightforward affair for years now.

Sometimes you want to clear your history to get rid of bloat and streamline your browsing experience. Other times, you're trying to hide a gift purchase from a loved one.

Apple makes it very easy to clear your browsing history on both the iPhone and iPad and we're here to show you how. Here's how you can make a fresh start in Safari and debloat your web browsing experience.

On the latest models, web browsing is smoother than ever before thanks to ProMotion in the iPhone 15 Pro and faster chipsets like the M2 found in the iPad Air 6 . If you're looking for a new Apple device, we highly recommend one of the following:

iPhone 15 Pro $999 at Apple

iPhone 15 Pro $999 at Apple

Grab the best iPhone available right now starting from $999. With a gorgeous titanium finish and the most powerful chip ever in an iPhone, you won't be disappointed with the 15 Pro.

iPad Air 6 13-inch |$799$754 at Amazon

iPad Air 6 13-inch | $799 $754 at Amazon

With an M2 chip and a 13-inch screen option, the new iPad Air 6 is one of the best iPads available right now. Normally $799, you can pick up the 13-inch model for nearly $50 off at the moment — don't miss out.

Viewing your web history in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 is very easy to do, here's how:

  • In Safari, tap the Bookmarks button in the toolbar that's below the address bar.
  • Tap the History icon in the upper right corner. Here, you can view your entire web history.

To search for bookmarks, tap the Bookmarks button in the toolbar at the bottom of the app, then select the Bookmark icon.

  • Use the History search bar to find previously viewed pages.

To find History, tap the History menu. Then use the search to find previously viewed information.

If the time calls to wipe most or all of your web browsing history in Safari, here's how to do it on both iPhone and iPad.

To note, the below steps will be the same if you attempt to wipe your web browsing history on an iPhone 15 Pro Max or an iPad Mini 6 , all Apple devices require the same steps.

  • In Safari, tap the Bookmarks button.
  • Select the History icon in the upper right corner.

Safari iOS 17 Clear web history

One more thing… A feature no one talks about

Privacy on the web matters more than ever in these modern times. Websites store the pages you click on, especially when you sign into a page that can contain personal information about you.

It's great to have a feature like this in Safari — but it would be good to have this automated in iOS 18 . If Apple's web browser could automatically clear history after 24 hours it would be very useful, as you wouldn't leave a trail behind.

Regardless, it's still a good feature, and one you should use every week.

Apple’s WWDC may include AI-generated emoji and an OpenAI partnership

Apple is preparing to play its generative ai cards..

By Wes Davis , a weekend editor who covers the latest in tech and entertainment. He has written news, reviews, and more as a tech journalist since 2020.

An illustration of the Apple logo.

Apple will finally tell its own AI story at WWDC 2024 , but it may not mean the sorts of showy features demoed by the likes of Google , Microsoft , or OpenAI . Instead, the event may see Apple rolling out basic AI features like transcribing voice memos or auto-generated emoji — and announcing a rumored partnership with OpenAI, according to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter for Bloomberg today.

Recent rumors have held that Apple will be allowing chatbots to integrate more deeply into its operating systems, and it seems that OpenAI is getting the first crack at that with ChatGPT. But Apple is still working on an agreement with Google to do the same with Gemini , according to Gurman. It’s also been rumored to be talking to Anthropic . (Those talks started before OpenAI’s ongoing Scarlett Johansson dust-up , but they underscore why Apple might want more than one iPhone chatbot deal.) Outside of whatever those potential partnerships will mean, Apple’s approach to AI will apparently focus on being practical.

  • Better Siri is coming: what Apple’s research says about its AI plans

One big, noticeable improvement Apple will reportedly announce could be a “smart recap” feature that Gurman mentions. This will apparently summarize missed texts, notifications, and other things like “web pages, news articles, documents, notes and other forms of media.” That might be particularly nice when it comes to dealing with iOS notifications, which can be overwhelming and difficult to tame . And if you squint, it vaguely echoes Microsoft’s recently-announced Recall feature that lets you look back at what you’ve been doing on your computer.

The Voice Memo app could also get a big boost in AI-generated transcripts, Gurman writes. Selfishly, that will be key for referring to interview recordings, but it could also be handy for, say, students recording their lessons for later reference. Apple devices have similar features already, like auto-generated voicemail transcripts and system-wide captions for videos, audio, and conversations.

The company also reportedly plans to announce AI-powered improvements to on-device Spotlight search, internet searches with Safari, as well as writing suggestions for emails and texts. And the company may also use AI to retouch photos and generate emoji on the fly, based on what you’re texting — a type of feature that seems to consistently lead to trouble for these companies. (See Meta’s gun-toting Waluigi AI stickers or Google’s inappropriately racially diverse nazi pictures .)

Apple could showcase a better, more natural-sounding voice for Siri, based on Apple’s own large language models, as well as better Siri functionality on the Apple Watch. Where it can, Apple’s devices will do all of this stuff locally, but for complicated tasks, they’ll offload processing to Apple’s own M2 Ultra-based servers, Gurman writes. In general, he says devices “released in the last year or so” will gain most of the new on-device AI features.

Apart from AI features, the company may announce an iOS 18 feature to let users change their app icons to different colors, according to Gurman. Something similar is possible now, using the iOS Shortcuts app, but I’d sure welcome a more straightforward method. That’s in addition to the other upcoming rumored iPhone home screen change will finally let users put app icons wherever they’d like instead of iOS forcing a top-to-bottom, left-to-right arrangement. What’s next? Custom launchers ?

Update May 26th, 2024, 11:38AM ET: Fleshed out some rumored features and added more context.

Apple Shortcuts and ChatGPT for Mac

Avatar for Zac Hall

OpenAI recently launched their official ChatGPT app for the Mac (before Windows). The macOS app brings most of the functionality from the iPhone version to the desktop — no web browser needed.

Option + Space

Hands-down, the best function of the Mac app is instant ChatGPT access from anywhere with a simple keyboard shortcut. Option + Space is the default, or you can assign your own. Before ChatGPT came to the Mac, I kept a Safari tab pinned to OpenAI’s website. Since I spend the majority of my work week on the Mac, my ChatGPT usage has skyrocketed beyond a few times a day to dozens of instances throughout the day.

Anyway, today I realized that the same Shortcuts supported by ChatGPT on iOS also work with ChatGPT on macOS! In my case, they synced over and just worked. You can also set them up from Shortcuts on the Mac. (Create a new shortcut, select ChatGPT from apps, and add which action you’d like to assign.)

ChatGPT offers two shortcuts: Ask ChatGPT , and Start voice conversation with ChatGPT .

Using the iPhone, I’ve used Ask ChatGPT as a lock screen launcher and occasionally assigned Start voice conversation with ChatGPT to the Action button on my iPhone 15 Pro Max. (I primarily use the Action button to launch Camera. It can get awkward when I forget I changed it, go to take a photo, and ChatGPT opens a voice conversation…)

ChatGPT voice

The system-wide keyboard shortcut fulfills my need for Ask ChatGPT . I’m sure more savvy Shortcuts users could cook up some useful versions of it. It’s the Start voice conversation with ChatGPT action that I think has potential on the Mac. See below:

The only tweak I needed for the Mac is to include it in the menu bar folder and assign Control + Space as the keyboard shortcut to run the action. You can also add an icon to the Dock for initiating a voice conversation. The shortcut even works when the ChatGPT Mac app is closed.

Assistant to the voice assistant

People have already been using ChatGPT voice on iOS to create a generative AI version of Siri. Having this same capability on the Mac enhances voice assistant features on the desktop too. I’ll have to spend more time with it before I determine whether or not actually using ChatGPT voice on the Mac is a good fit, but I think it has potential.

Of course, Siri itself will hopefully learn a thing or two with OpenAI’s help in iOS 18 and macOS 15. We’ll find out for sure on June 10 when Apple unveils its upcoming software improvements.

Oh, and lastly, there’s another way to use ChatGPT and Shortcuts. It turns out ChatGPT is pretty good at giving you step-by-step instructions for how to make a shortcut based on what you’re trying to do. Now imagine a world where Siri and the Shortcuts app itself uses generative AI to integrate that sort of feature directly and with more system access.

Note that OpenAI is still in the process of rolling out its Mac app to all users.

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, install & run itunes, aperture, or iphoto in macos sonoma with retroactive.

Install iTunes, Aperture, or iPhotos on a modern MacOS Sonoma Mac

Do you miss iTunes for Mac? Do you really miss Aperture for Mac? Do you have fond memories of iPhoto in MacOS? What if you could run any of these three now defunct apps in modern MacOS Sonoma? With the help of an app called Retroactive, you can do exactly that, installing iTunes, Aperture, and iPhoto, onto modern Macs running MacOS Sonoma (or Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur, and Catalina).

iTunes was the all-in-one app for managing your iDevices, music, TV/movies, and podcasts, but with the introduction of MacOS Catalina, Apple shattered iTunes into multiple pieces, bringing device management into Finder, Apple Music for Music, TV.app for movies and TV content, and Podcasts.app for podcasts content.

iPhoto was the consumer-level photo manager and editor for Mac that has become kind of a cult-classic, and was replaced by the unenthusiastically named (and arguably better equipped) Photos app for Mac.

And Aperture was a wildly popular pro-level photo editor for Mac that was replaced by… Photos? Or a subscription Adobe product like Lightroom? Maybe Pixelmator or Photomator? There hasn’t really been a true Aperture replacement for many Mac users who have fond recollections of Aperture.

Whichever of these apps that you wish to use in MacOS Sonoma, you can with Retroactive. And they’ll run not only in Sonoma, but also in macOS Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur, and Catalina with the help of Retroactive too, but we’re focusing on Sonoma since it’s the latest.

How to Install & Run Aperture, iTunes, iPhoto, on MacOS Sonoma

  • Get Retroactive from the developer here on github
  • Right-click on Retroactive and choose “Open” to bypass Gatekeeper (you may need to do this twice, depending on your system settings

Bypass Gatekeeper

  • Select the app you want to install from the list: iTunes, Aperture, iPhoto
  • Go through the installation process (note that for some apps like Aperture, you need to have a copy of Aperture available from another Mac to install onto the MacOS Sonoma Mac)

Installing iTunes on MacOS Sonoma with Retroactive

Soon you’ll have Aperture, iTunes, or iPhoto, installed, and all you need to do is open them like any other application to have them up and running on your modern Mac.

Each of these apps continues to work in modern MacOS, though you’ll likely find that iTunes will have issues with modern iPhone or iPad hardware running the latest iOS versions. This isn’t too surprising given that iTunes was killed off five years ago on the Mac, so don’t expect that to work perfectly. Aperture does work just as it always did however, making one wonder why Apple decided to do away with the popular photo editor.

Going beyond Aperture, iTunes, and iPhoto, Retroactive can even go further and expand into more apps with other older Mac operating system as well, enabling the usage of Xcode 11.7, Final Cut Pro 7, Logic Pro 9, and iWork suite 09 in MacOS Mojave, or even macOS High Sierra.

While Retroactive will get these old Mac apps working on your modern MacOS hardware, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to continue working in the future, and it’d be wise to not depend on third party tweaks like this in order to run outdated software. Retroactive actually has an entire document dedicated to transitioning away from these unsupported older apps and into new and modern Mac apps, and that may be worth checking out if you’re not sure where to go next.

Have you ever used Retroactive to install and run Aperture, iTunes, or iPhoto on a modern Mac? What do you think of these apps or this tool in general? Share your perspectives in the comments.

Michael, the github page has a link to a much longer explanation about how it works.

Tried tin install Retroactive but my computer wouldn’t let me. Said the developer “could not be identified.” Using the latest version of the MacOS so this article above is not valid for me.

As the article mentions, you have to right-click the app and choose “Open” to bypass Gatekeeper. If you don’t want to bypass Gatekeeper (reasonable) and you don’t trust unidentified developers (also reasonable), you won’t want to use any app that requires those compromises.

Most people, including myself and likely yourself included, don’t need iTunes, Aperture, iPhoto, old Xcode anyway. Aperture and iPhoto are superseded by Photos. iTunes functionality is now in Finder and Music.

Apps like Retroactive remind me of Hackintosh, which is super useful for a limited group of people, but widely not applicable.

I never thought I’d hear myself say it, but yes, I do miss iTunes. As a non-subscriber to Apple Music (or any streaming service) I just want to listen to my same old MP3s, and the current Music desktop app is not great at that. A hundred small interface quirks, but they add up. I’m gonna give this a spin.

Some discussion of how these things work would be helpful. What exactly are they doing?
