Hi Gang MAC OS 12.6 2021 Intel iMAC I just noticed when clicking and dragging my tabs and attempting to move them to a new safari window to try and organize them better, they just disappeared when I released them onto the tab bar of the new window. Is there a bug? Am I not remembered how to do it correctly? etc etc

This is probably the same bug, isn’t it? Safari 16 breaks tab to new window behavior https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/safari-16-breaks-tab-to-new-window-behavior.2359236/

Thanks! Looks like a similar but slightly different scenario for the same bug. so, moving tabs from window to window seems to be very broken. Ugh. such a basic/useful feature too.

Yes, I used to use this feature a lot, and now I’m desperately waiting for the fix. It’s really annoying.

I'm having this problem too, and Safari randomly crashes constantly. It just won't load anything as if I have no internet, but no other browser does this. Apple is going downhill fast. Tim Cook belongs in jail.

It will probably be fixed in Safari 16.1, so no need to upgrade OS just for that. Safari 16.1 beta https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ckground.2359484/?post=31655061#post-31655061

Not fixed with Ventura and Safari 16.1 - Apple is getting worse with these bugs. This is a big one.

To be honest I've been using the 16.1 betas on Monterey and the issue wasn't fixed at all. I really don't know if the issue is fixed on the stable, but my impression is that the issue with the tabs is not fixed at all. What worries me is that @eflx is saying that in Ventura the issue isn't fixed either. I was thinking that perhaps was an issue specific to Monterrey / Big Sur because safari had some changes to adapt to Ventura that caused the issue on the previous release… but it seems that it not the case. I don't know why Apple is not more careful with this. Have you reported this? I have a call with a senior advisor related to a Mail app issue and I probably will also mention this. The only way to get this issue fixed is to nag Apple about them.

Is there any chance you are working with tabs in a tab group? If so, it seems a likely contributor to the bug. All the windows stay synchronized when modifying tabs in a tab group. If I'm dragging from one window to another (and doing so within one or two tab groups), both windows have to go through two changes simultaneously, adding a tab and removing a tab. Concurrent changes often result in bugs due to the randomness of timing.

Have never bothered to make use of tab groups myself

Monterey Safari 16.1 user here. This is definitely not fixed, and is nearly the most annoying bug I've ever encountered on my Mac. You cannot move tabs between windows without losing them. I used to do this all the time between the window on my MacBook and the window on my external display. Now I have to cut the URL from one tab, close the tab, open a new tab on the other window, and paste in the URL. It's ridiculous and it's driving me nuts.

I've also noticed that Safari 16.1 doesn't load the favicons of some websites any more. I find that annoying, too, because the little icons are quite helpful to quickly find a tab. I've tried emptying all caches, but the issue persisted.

For those still having problems, a script to “clean Safari” https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/safari-issues.2354917/?post=31383169#post-31383169

If that works for you, you can set "Always Show Tab Bar" in the View menu. It does waste space if you only have a single tab open. You can also just hit command-t to make a single new tab in the target window before you drop the tab you want to move onto that window. Click to expand...

melodibit said: That's an interesting question. I use the Compact rather than the Separate view, so "Always Show Tab Bar" is irrelevant and actually grayed out. Unfortunately, for the moment, I find I'm unable to reproduce the problem (even in compact mode). It's working fine now for no clear reason. If the problem recurs, I'll try switching back to separate mode, and if that doesn't fix it, I'll try turning on "always show". Thanks for the idea. Click to expand...

macOS bugs causing sporadic browsing issues with Safari, Firefox, others

safari moving tabs bug

According to user reports on the Apple Support Communities, the Safari 14.1 update breaks functionality on popular websites like eBay. The issue appears to predominantly affect Safari 14.1 on macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave.

There are reports from developers about ongoing problems with the latest versions of Apple's browser, too. Google Chrome developer advocate Jake Archibald reports that localStorage in Safari 14.1 is broken, causing tabs with use the same localStorage for text boxes.

localStorage is broken in Safari 14.1. Tabs end up with seperate localStorage for reading, but the same localStorage for writing. This will likely result in data loss for users. (h/t @forresto ) https://t.co/5Ljxl4vvbH — Jake Archibald (@jaffathecake) May 4, 2021

Other reports indicate that Safari 14.1 for macOS Mojave and macOS Catalina also has problems with WebAuthN. According to Eclectic Light , Apple pulled the Safari 14.1 update for both of those macOS versions on May 1.

AppleInsider staff members have also run into website problems with macOS Big Sur and Safari 14.1. Problems across our staff don't stop at those browsers, since we've also noticed website functionality issues in Firefox and Google Chrome on sites like eBay and others.

As far as potential fixes, there doesn't appear to be anything surefire. Some users report that disabling JavaScript in Safari preferences seems to resolve some of the issues. The troubleshooting advice given by other users in the Apple Support Forums suggest that a clean reinstall of the operating system solves the problem, but AppleInsider can confirm that this is not a universal solution.

In the meantime, it appears that Apple is aware of the problems and is likely working on a fix, as evidenced by the removal of Safari 14.1 for macOS Mojave and macOS Catalina.

So interesting that this rears its head in macOS / am wondering if this is also the case for iPadOS Safari ?  The browser has a history of randomly blowing away entire tab collections, and Apple’s lame advice has been to use the tab history to deal with this aberration. HOPING for a FIX !

All the betas and this does not get reported?  I guess I don’t understand why they do betas

Since the updates my computer frequently crashes after waking up from a long sleep. There is also still something wrong with the USB SSD speeds over Thunderbolt.

I was having serious issues with Safari 14.1 on Mojave (macOS 10.14.6), but after re-installing using the direct download at: http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/36/06/071-02600-A_V0GH526IV1/1cn8scgv7ujlqsglord2zkdyy3ho2ebunz/Safari14.1MojaveAuto.pkg It's been error-free. There's also a direct download for Catalina here: http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/62/62/071-00728-A_5SWQUDK0WB/jyq47oimzangibo4lmyevte0ezlrg8w8s9/Safari14.1CatalinaAuto.pkg It seems that the built-in software update did not update all of Safari's support packages, in particular  libwebrtc.dylib at /System/Library/StagedFrameworks/Safari/ was out of date (should have a created date of 22/04/2021 for Mojave)

caddyman33 said: All the betas and this does not get reported?  I guess I don’t understand why they do betas  There may be something about opening up betas to such a wide audience that is actually resulting in less coverage. When I’ve done beta testing as part of a select group I definitely scrutinized the beta much more intensely. With vast numbers of people involved with the betas now, I think it’s becoming more of a Preview program rather than a true Beta program.

Safari Duplicate Tab Bug Plagues macOS Monterey and Ventura

Jeff Butts

A tremendously annoying Safari duplicate tab bug has been frustrating users since the release of macOS Monterey 12.6. Many users report that when dragging a Safari tab to create a new window, the tab remains the previous Safari window, grayed out. Apple support personnel have evidently offered several workarounds, but none fully resolve the issue.

Safari Tabs Duplicate Themselves, With One Grayed Out

Beginning with Safari version 16.0 (17614.1.29.9.10), tab behavior has been acting quite strangely. This is the version of Safari contained within macOS Monterey 12.6, and the bug persists even into macOS Ventura 13. Many users have reported the behavior on Apple Support Community as well as Reddit .

Upon dragging a tab out of a Safari window into a new one, the original tab remains in the parent window. The original tab is grayed out, but any changes in one instance affect both. So, if you refresh the page in one of the tabs and the contents change, the change is reflected in both instances.

Some have reported that closing the tab in the parent window also closes it within the new Safari window. Even more annoying, trying next to reopen the closed tab starts opening untitled tabs. The more you close these reopened tabs, the more Safari creates new untitled tabs.

Apple Offers Workarounds to Safari Duplicate Tab Bug That Don’t Resolve Issue

Thus far, Apple hasn’t offered a reliable solution to the problem. One Apple support professional suggested the following:

  • Close Safari and then open it back up again in safe mode (hold the Shift key while opening Safari).
  • Open a few tabs and drag one of them into a new window. The problem should go away now.
  • Close Safari and re-open as normal. Duplicating tabs should not happen anymore.

At best, this workaround has helped alleviate the problem for about a day. Many users reported the bug resurfaces the next day, if not within a few hours.

Another support representative went so far as to recommend doing a complete reinstall of macOS. One user affected by the bug tried this, and said it did nothing to alleviate the problem.

While some have reported the same issue under macOS Ventura 13 , it’s unclear just how widespread it is. I have not been able to duplicate the bug on my own Mac, but know of at least one Ventura user who experiences it regularly. Hopefully, Apple will find a solution within the near future.

3 thoughts on “ Safari Duplicate Tab Bug Plagues macOS Monterey and Ventura ”

Happened to me today, with Monterey Safari. Then, after trying it over and over a few times – whilst investigating the glitch – Safari stopped responding to external “open link” requests (but that’s happened prior to this last update, so may be unconnected).

I’m living whit this bug for quite some time. I suspect it may be related to using multiple monitors. In my current setup, I have a 27″ external Monitor hooked to my Macbook via Thunderbolt dock, and I use both displays. Can you confirm if you are using more than one monitor too?

I have a multiple display setup on my Mac Studio, using USB-C for my main monitor and HDMI for my secondary. I’m pretty sure Stacey, who also noticed it, has a single-display setup, though.

Disappearing Safari Tabs on iPhone or iPad? How to Find Them

Every so often, a seemingly small bug in Apple's operating systems survives the company's annual OS launches and continues to cause users huge frustration from one software update to the next.

apple macos bigsur safari improvedtabs 06222020

While there isn't an accepted solution to the problem of disappearing tabs, there are cases where it might seem that your tabs are gone, when in fact they are just hidden from view. Here are some ways that you may be able to get them back or stop them from disappearing in the first place.

Reveal Hidden Tabs

On iPadOS, for example, if you press and hold the Show Tab Overview button (four squares in a quadrant) in the top-right corner of the Safari window, this will reveal a dropdown menu that includes an option to Merge All Windows .

safari

Reveal the Shelf

Another action worth trying on iPadOS is pressing and holding the Safari icon in the Dock or on the Home Screen and selecting Show All Windows from the popup menu that appears.

shelf

Recently Closed Tabs

If you have an inkling that some of the tabs you're missing have been inadvertently closed, you can always use the Recently Closed Tabs option to re-open them. All you have to do is open up the tab view in Safari and long press on the "+" icon to get a look at all of the tabs that you've recently closed.

play Even if you're aware of the gesture, it's worth a reminder that this feature exists in case someone gets ahold of your phone and checks your browser. Even if you've closed out a tab, it's still going to be visible in Safari, unless you were using a private browser window or have cleared your browsing history.

Turn Off Auto-Close Tabs

If you still haven't been able to find some of your tabs, make sure that Safari isn't closing them after a certain duration on your behalf: Open Settings , tap through to Safari -> Close Tabs and ensure that Manually is selected.

safari tabs

Bookmark All Open Tabs

If the above suggestions haven't worked for you, there is a workaround: Consider bookmarking your open tabs after each browsing session. This might sound like more hassle than it's worth, but since iOS 13 Apple has included a one-tap option to just that.

safari tabs

A popup menu will appear at the on the screen from which you can select Add Bookmarks for X Tabs , the X being the number of tabs open.

Once you've tapped this option, you'll be asked to save the tabs in a new bookmarks folder (remember to give it a recognizable name). Alternately, you can choose a location from the existing folder list in which to save the tabs.

safari

To access your bookmarks in Safari at any time, simply tap the Bookmarks icon in the main browsing interface or the sidebar to reveal all of your saved favorites and folders. Press and hold on the folder of bookmarks and select Open in New Tabs , or alternatively, Open in Tab Group if you want them grouped.

Moving tabs in Safari bug

I'm on the latest version on Mac OS on M1 and since the latest upgrade I noticed one problem in Safari.

Having two Safari pages opened with different tabs each, if I move one or several tabs from one page to another (select one tab with the mouse and drag it to the other page) will keep the tab open in both pages (will not move) and only one is active at a time (the second one becomes a bit gray/dark and transparent). If I close the tab that one moved from any page, both tabs will be closed from both pages.

This was not happening in the past and it is not happening all the time.

If i restart Safari or the Mac, for a while will work as it should, but after few days the bug is happening again till the next restart. Today so many tabs were duplicated that in the end crashed Safari and lost all except the ones that I didn't move.

Long story short, if you want to group the tabs in separate pages, it is not going to happen because all tabs moved from one page to another will be present in all pages.

Anyone else experienced similar behaviour?

regards, 2p

If you’ve noticed recently that Chrome for Android is showing blank tabs, Google is both aware and rolling out a fix for the problem.

On a support page , Google says that it is aware of an issue “impacting Chrome Browser that may result in webpage content temporarily disappearing when switching between open tabs.” For those affected, this causes the web page to appear blank when they switch between tabs in Chrome on Android.

The issue was noted by many users, including one author at Android Police .

The fix, Google says, is server side and should be available to your device already. The fix first started rolling out to Chrome for Android earlier this week on May 21.

No app update is required, though you can sometimes “force” the update to be applied by force-closing Chrome through Android’s settings. On Pixel and Samsung Galaxy, you can do that by opening Chrome, opening the multitasking UI, tapping on the Chrome icon, and clicking “App Info.” On the page that opens, you can simply press “force stop.” That won’t work every time, but it occasionally does the trick.

Given the server-side tweak started rolling out a couple of days ago, it should be available fairly widely.
